Reviews of The Saracen's Head

Just returned from a fantastic Sunday lunch here. We ordered the roast beef and the roast pork.
I deliberately chose this pub as on their website they sated that they serve the beef pink and rare - and I was not disappointed!
The beef was sensational and the veg and trimmings were perfectly cooked.
It came with cauliflower cheese, a green cabbage and and a red cabbage, with potatoes, carrots and a giant Yorkshire pudding.
Had to ask for a second jug of gravy as portions were small but it arrived swiftly. Without a doubt one of the best roast beef dinners I've ever had!
The crackling that came with the pork was incredibly small, and more of a sliver, but still very tasty. Probably better for the waistline this way but would have been nice if this was a bit bigger.
All in all big congrats to the chef and also the serving staff who were very pleasant.
In short, the Saracen's Head is an absolute cracker of a gastropub, cannot wait to return and sample more!

In Little Brington. A unassuming little pub, that is very popular for its restaurant class food. Lovely beer garden for when the English weather permits. I have included the road in, and the abandoned church on the corner of Roman Road. Locals were very friendly.

Even from the exterior Christmas decorations this bar/restaurant looked very inviting. Very friendly and the food was excellent. No small portions here! Certainly worth a return visit in the near future.

Great place to go to after we found out the pub in the neighbouring village was sadly shut.
Staff were all friendly and food was awesome. Had the mezze sharer with some olives which was perfect for an afternoon snack!
The beer I found had a funny taste to it, but possibly just the beer really! Bar man was kind enough to replace with a pale ale as I hadn’t drunk too much of the ale.
Overall, great place to visit and will be visiting again soon!

Cosy village Pub, Great food and drink. And friendly service. Will visit again.

Our 2nd visit here. A much better alternative on the way down to London than services! Only 20 minutes out the way from the M1. 1st time was a Sunday and the Sunday roast was brilliant, the 2nd was a Friday early lunch time and the main menu was just as high quality. Food tastes fresh, the ales on offer were good and well kept. The service on both occasions was friendly. We'll definitely make this a regular pit stop whenever we travel down the MQ.

First visit here with our neighbours who had recommended it. Beautiful countryside setting, large carpark, large outdoor seating. We all thoroughly enjoyed a three course lunch. 3 x prawns starter - lovely, juicy prawns, delicious tomato and chorizo sauce. 1 x creamy garlic mushrooms on brioche. Delicious. I had medium rare ribeye, the best quality steak and best cooked steak I have had in a very long time. Crispy gourmet chips with grated cheese and truffle oil. Lovely sweet vine tomatoes, rocket and mushrooms. Other mains were mushroom pappardelle, salmon and fish and chips. Home made bearnaise sauce was creamy and tarragon filled. Desserts were homemade frangipane, strawberry brulee and ice cream. Very good value for money and would have no hesitation recommending. The service was generally very efficient, one waitress didn't seem up to speed with the difference between beer and lager, nor pie of the day but overall this was minor and didn't spoil a delicious meal. A really pleasant surprise and well worth the drive there. Thank you!
J. H.
Lovely food yesterday for mother's day Sunday lunch but not enough vegetables delivered for the 5 of us! They give the same amount whether you are a table for 2, 4 or 5. We asked for extra and got fobbed off. Then asked again, received them but got charged for them!! Was not impressed with this. Shame as put a sour feeling to the whole experience.
A. S.
The Sunday roast is exceptional and the only meal you will need to eat all day. The dining room is warm and welcoming, the bar is also welcoming and will accommodate your dog. The staff is kind, welcoming and only enhance your experience.

We went with some friends and we all had fabulous food, the menu sounded so delicious it was difficult to choose!
The tables were all spaced out very well and the chairs were really comfy, the waitress was very attentive but not intrusive.
A really lovely dining experience can HIGHLY recommend.

A very pleasent and welcoming place to visit, with excellent food, nice wine, and great service. Thoroughly recommend.

excellent service Very friendly staff 👍 wonderful food

This pub is set in a lovely village and is unusual for several reasons. One reason is that It has a red phone box inside but probably the main reason is that you can get married here in a purpose built extension! I photographed a wedding here earlier in the year and it provides a relaxed alternative for your wedding ceremony.
W. E.
Very good food, all the staff are very attentive and a nice atmosphere. Just a great village pub

8 of us went for dinner and every starter, main or dessert was enjoyed. The grilled Cornish sardine on toast with olive tapenade and sun blushed tomatoes was delicious. The hake with gnocchi and asparagus was excellent. Portions were generous.
Not only was the food superb, the staff were very friendly, service quick, and the building/decor very pleasant.
Definitely recommended and will be back soon.

First time visit for us. Ideal pub for halfway get together with delicious food,. (Seafood tagliatelle for me), friendly staff. And where do they get their Picpoul wine? The nicest one we've had. We will be back.
B. G.
Amazing food. Great service. They squeezed us in family of five, even in this crazy time. The kids menu was great with good sized portions. Staff are really friendly and I would highly recommend this to anyone. Awesome way to end our holiday

Amazing place, fireplace outside is such a good idea for chilly days of spring
S. P.
Had an amazing Sunday roast here - the lamb was pink, as it should be and all the veg tasted of their individual flavours. Really need to return and try their standard menu, and some of their amazing sounding desserts.
J. F.
Came here for a weekday lunch for our wedding anniversary - only our 2nd time to the Saracen's Head. The food was absolutely superb - all 3 courses, as was the friendly customer service and there was even a decent guest ale on too. Certainly one of the best pub meals you'll get for miles around!
M. S.
Great Sunday lunch. Good service, a pleasant experience.
Would return.
E. R.
Good food and first class service!
We wiii be coming again soon!!

We had the most amazing pie, the pasty was absolutely amazing. The meal as a whole was absolutely fantastic. A great first visit. We will be back.

Not visited this restaurant for several years and it was interesting to the changes.
Lunchtime was not busy yet relaxing, the service in the restaurant was friendly and attentive with prompt service. The lunchtime menu was brief yet adequate give a range of choices from fish to steak and both well cooked. The English mustard was indeed hot and a pleasant surprise!
I would recommend considering filling the holes to the car park drive.
H. J.
Stunning pub with lots of parking. The staff are friendly and the service is quick. Will definitely be returning
B. W.
Always good food and beer and a nice place to visit.

We had a lovely time today going to The Saracen's Head following lockdown. Everything was very well organised, clean and really nice, attractive garden furniture carefully spaced out. The staff were friendly, helpful and efficient and the food was very good, I had a Buckby Steak sandwich. I wish everyone well - you made a great start.
z. n.
Really good, service was brilliant food was lovely, however started with the camanbert started and that pretty much did me in and could finish my steak 😭😅
J. H.
Outstanding meals. Lovely atmosphere and friendly service.
J. U.
Food drink and service were all very good but the atmosphere just wasn't there, a lot of effort has been put in with Christmas decorations etc and their safety measures are second to none but Covid 19 has put a dampner on the whole experience. This is in no way any fault of the pub, in times gone by the atmosphere has been great, looking forward to the return of more normal times.
P. P.
Cosy village pub. Fresh food with generous portions.
P. M.
Excellent Fish and Chips!, its amazingly hard to find a pub that does good fish and chips! but this place was excellent, beautifully cooked crisp batter, thick (fresh) flaky cod, great chips and lovely mushy peas, we sat in the bar area which had a great atmosphere and were served by very friendly staff, we shall be returning very shortly to check out the rest of the menu. I would definitely recommend this pub to others for a great atmosphere and great food and drink.
C. B.
Lovely old English style gastro pub with very varied menu and great service. Good sized car park and plenty of outside seating for good weather days. Specials as well as regular food items. Bit disappointed with my mussels, several were closed so should never have been dished up. Pity as would definitely have scored a 5 with a bit more attention to detail.
V. B.
My family and I had such a lovely meal Saturday. All of us had excellent food. The first meal out for a long time.
M. C.
Recommended by a friend, bar area friendly to dogs and food. Pastry on pie of the day, light fine and crisp. No additional salt used. Excellent. Deserts equally good and delicately thought out.
v. l.
This place is great .Took my good lady out for a meal here early Saturday evening. We chose from the Valentines menu ,the normal menu and the specials board. We dined in the cozy library. Really great tasty food, impeccable service, great atmosphere. Love it , love it , love it !!! Thanks Emma and staff.
W. G.
Friendly atmosphere seabass was slightly over cooked

R. C.
Best Sunday lunch we have eaten out in a long time. Definitely recommend this restaurant

I've eaten here 3 times this year and every meal has been absolutely first class. The tapas during the week is exceptional too. Wonderful food, very helpful and pleasant staff, great beer all in a very pretty country location. Highly.. highly recommended!
L. E.
Great food and service. Really looked after the 15 of us.
j. R.
Just been and had the festive menu. Incredible is the only word I can use, service was excellent, atmosphere was wonderful and the food was so so so good! How lucky I live in the next village.......keep up the excellent work it was a great evening. Thank you and thanks to the chef.
J. C.
Went there for a Birthday celebration.
Lovely range on the menu, however my steak was slightly over and lacked flavour.
The burgers promised much however lacked flavour as well
Nice array of drinks and very friendly staff.
G. P.
I was here as part of the Heavy Metal Truants charity cycle ride and they were great to us. It was a hard ride in the rain to get there and they greeted us with good food and good beer. Great atmosphere, great decor and lovely old building in the countryside. Recommend. Maybe not to cycle to in the rain!
M. L.
Lovely venue to be conducting a wedding. They looked after us Registrars very well so I'll be returning for dinner at some point 😁
M. b.
Fantastic food, good service and thoughtfully set up to meet social distancing guidelines. Tables outside are plentiful and spaced well. Would recommend and we will return!
C. T.
Very good as usual food and service excellent
J. M.
Stunning gastro pub in a scenic location, with good food. Its the perfect Sunday drive destination.
K. T.
Me and my husband came here for Valentine's day dinner. We ended up choosing from the pub menu. I had the vegetarian starter (mushroom and brioche) and the veggie tagine for main course. They both were very tasty! Great choice for vegetarians, not your usual veggie lasagne option. My husband had the pigeon for starter and the steak for main. They were both perfectly cooked. The girls working there were lovely too. They had great beer on too. We will definitely be back!
D. Y.
Lovely pint, Great food, 3 covered outdoor spaces for 6, with sides open these even had fires when I visited, Several well spaced outdoor tables.

B. S.

We were very well looked by Natasha
J. J.
We love The Saracen's Head; it is a warm and friendly pub serving great food in a quiet village location and we regularly recommend it to our holiday cottage guests.
The continued success in the Northamptonshire Food and Drink Awards is fully deserved and a testament to the efforts put in by Duncan, Sarah, their family and staff to create a family friendly environment whilst still serving excellent food and drink.
Thank you for some lovely some lovely meals over the last 12 months and we will be back again very soon!
M. R.
Best pub food in the County. You'll have to travel a fair few miles to find better. Dog friendly. A real and proper country pub. Good staff and some fine ales.

Food was to a high standard, table service by lia was the best table service experience in Northampton. Classy place, was very impressed, will definitely be going again.
H. F.
Maybe it was an off day? But the best of kitchens don't have them. Consistency is the mantra of the Michelin laureates.
I like the atmosphere of this pub'. Dogs are welcomed in the bar, where you can also eat. Toby, the resident chocolate labrador, plies his trade where possible. Today, there was also a Cockapoo, a Great Dane and my Chesapeake. The music is just that, not the dreaded Musak and as I had booked I was seated precisely where I had wished.
The staff were welcoming and attentive, but this tailed off a little after I had eaten.
I don't eat out very often, but when I do, my expectations are high. Today, I was really in the mood to push the boat out and justify the taxi.
I had previously enjoyed a sirloin steak salad on a Sunday, but it wasn't on the menu this time.
I chose the crab as a starter. I asked that the chef omitted the Grano Padano cheese. It's the poor relation of Reggiano and raw cheese with crab isn't a great combination. Gratineed over spider crab is a different story. The plate arrived and it was good on the eye. Sweet baby tomatoes, pea shoots and spoonfuls of crab with a swipe around the edge of the plate. However, presentation is no substitute for taste. The spoonfuls of crab, were just white meat and woefully underseasoned. Good crab is sweet and needs a foil to lift it. A spice and a sour. The big hitting taste of brown crab meat would have helped too. Oh, and that swipe, was utterly tasteless. I tried it several times with my finger.
I chose roast leg of lamb, as the main. It was well cooked, pink and tender. But ...... as the plate was not hot, nor was what was placed on it. Yes, the well made gravy helped, but the roast potatoes were burnt. I had also asked for some salad - the rocket was hastily plonked on a too small tapas bowl, and slicked with dressing. The rocket was, what's the word, for masculine disfunction - flacid.
This pub has a varied and interesting wine list. I chose a glass of French white wine, 'Heron', for the crab, as I didn't want anything too floral. It matched well.
When you see a wine, on a list, that you know you really like, not a Grand Cru, but a wine you really want to drink, you go for it. Carignan Vieilles Vignes is a joy - if it has been well cellared. This one was cloudy, chewy, verging on brown on the edges and displayed all the signs of being kept too warm. I didn't drink very much of it. My wine thermometer at home confirmed my instincts - 17 degrees C. I suppose I should have known better. This is not a wine to be drunk young, unless there is an issue. 2014? Not much return on £22! I don't know who supplies the wine, at this pub, but I think I could recommend better. One for the pot, I'm afraid.
I don't have a sweet tooth, but, occasionally, despite my mild lactose intolerance, I do indulge in some cheese. I asked for fruit, rather than biscuits and was brought some grapes which Toby and Chicco enjoyed with me. Oh, but the cheese. Straight out of the 'fridge, no developed taste and rubbery in consequence. The Shropshire Blue survived the best, but, again, the dogs did well.
Lastly, the espresso and digestive. Coffee was good. With a proper machine it is hard to get it wrong these days. However, to go with? Lots of the sweet liqueurs which don't do it for me, single malt whiskies, which I know don't agree with me and just two pretty ordinary cognacs. I lived in Cognac for 9 months, I do know what I am talking about. I opted for Remy VSOP, but it was - well ordinary.
£65 - sorry I won't be back.
