Reviews of The Garnet
N. K.
Lovely pub in the centre of Norwich. Some great beers on tap and various different seating areas throughout the lovely building.
M. C.
Terrific changes here. Kind of wine shop/pub. Pizza business by pub at the rear to order and eat sitting outside or upstairs. Excellent thin dough base and tasty fresh toppings. Good cheese and tomato base sauce. Slight feel of a Western cowboy bar but the last of the market pubs lives on with panache and style. Good selection of organic wines and beer. Top drawer.
S. B.
Love the atmosphere at this City Centre pub with the Norwich Market ambiance next door. Great ales. Excellent service.
A. C.
This a great city centre pub right next to the market...if you can get a table outside you can eat your food there while you have a drink too. It gets very busy on a Saturday lunchtime outside when the weather is nice, but that means its quieter inside if you just want to pop in for a drink.
E. B.
The staff were great and its a nice enough pub but went there last week and they had run out of almost everything on tap. Not sure if it was just really bad luck or if there are supply / ordering issues. Will probably go back in the future but wouldn't stay for more than 1 drink if the lack of choice remains.
A. S.
I never usually post about an experience at a pub, but l have to say is that this pub should be an imperative part of your trip to Norfolk, the beer is great, the atmosphere is spot on and the customer service is exceptional, especially the strawberry blonde bloke with the glasses. If you come to Norwich and don’t visit this pub, you’re doing it wrong.
M.
Great location and fantastic service. Went for the Ramen but the bar staff service and drinks at the Garnet. Always great to sit outside by the market. Great selection of ales beers and lagers and weds and Thurs some of the best Ramen I've ever tasted. Well worth a visit.
A. W.
Not sure what to say. An unusual building that seems to have several floors with not much on them. Nice bar downstairs and very city centre based. A couple tables outside but not a beer garden more just seats outside. Nice decor. Bit pricey but city centre. Pretty much in the market.
M. O.
Lovely pub, great seating area outside, nice staff 100% going back :)
D. H.
Service was good and staff cheerful, not a large selection of cask ales. Still a nice pub to go to though.
C. J.
Lovely boozer in the heart of Norwich and probably one of the city's best locations to watch the world go by. There's lots of seating outside but not a great deal inside so it can be tricky to find a seat when it's busy at the weekends and little wet or chilly. The staff are great and there's a good selection of beers on tap but no food servcie. However, if you're hungry you can order a pizza from Brick nextdoor who will deliver direct to your table in the pub
O. S.
Lovely pub overlooking Norwich's historic popular market. Always has a great floral display on the outside of the pub. Particularly like the gallery devoted to George Plunkett's fantastic monochromes of disappeared Norwich. It's a good celebration of his work. Interesting pub lounges on all different levels, good service and reasonable prices for a city centre pub.
H. S.
Great city centre pub to visit. Wonderful building with some great views from upstairs. Also outdoor seating if it is a nice day.
P. C.
Old quirky pub overlooking the busseling Market. Dog friendly and an different range of ales on tap.
Lots of seating in nooks and crannies as well as outside.
A.
Always a great atmosphere the staff are mostly all every welcoming bar 1 or 2 recent visits but over all is my local when I go to Norwich always stop in for a drink.
D. W.
Well kept beer, nice casual atmosphere with outdoor seating and music. Can bring food from surrounding outlets to tables if you buy drinks.
T. M.
Fantastic atmosphere and a good selection of beers; great staff and a wonderful evening.
A. S.
I like this pub but the service is unbearably slow. If there's a queue of more than 2 people then consider walking to a different pub.
J. W.
Nice spot, great location, pretty good prices and nice to be able to get takeaway pizzas from the place next door
B. J.
The Garnet is a go to place if you are in city centre. Popular place to sit out side and enjoy a drink.
h. s.
Nice pub in the city centre with friendly people & good atmosphere
J. M.
Great pub right in the centre of Norwich, and next to Norwich Market. The Sausage Rolls here are legendary. Beer and spirits also up to scratch.
C. C.
Another fantastic must see Norwich pub offering great service from bar staff. Can soak up the atmosphere of the city centre and market while enjoying a great selection of local ales and many beers. Visited on one or two other occasions when pop up kitchen nights have been on and enjoyed some brilliant food as well!
Y. E.
I've only been once but I enjoyed my overall experience and I would go back again.
It was quite nice to sit outside on the tables looking onto the market. They let you have food from the adjacent pizza place next door.
Our server was very friendly, patient and elaborate. He had good rapport with us and all of the other patrons.
The only thing not great were the toilets. One wasn't clean and there was no tissue in either of the ladies cubicles.
We asked the lady behind the bar for tissue and she didn't get it when we asked, instead we stood at the bar waiting for the her to finish what she was doing behind the bar. There was no queue, no people but us at the bar.
She should have done what she was doing after she'd tended to us, her customers, who were waiting at the bar for tissue that should have already been in the toilets.
Once she'd finished what she was doing, she said 'Oh, I didn't realise you were waiting, do you want it now?'. I mean really?? was she really being serious!??
We both stood at the bar after we said there was no toilet tissue in the loos and asked if we could have some.
We had been there all night buying drinks.
With the prices they charge for drinks they need to pull their finger out on that.
It's important.
S. G.
Publicised as 'dog friendly' and food served. Dogs were allowed in but it is a very narrow, steep building and a liot of dogs might not like the stairs. No water bowls provided either. Food NOT available although it was encouraged to use the market stalls and foid could be eaten on the pub premises.
M. T.
Nice quirky pub. Good food. Been going strong since 1861
t. L.
Excellent pub in the heart of the city serving speciality craft beers, interesting gins and yummy burgers!
R. W.
Great place to stop in on the way round Norwich City of ale trail.
N. T.
There with a group for less than an hour, approached by beggars 4 times and they would not leave us alone. Pretty pricy and left waiting a while by seemingly inattentive staff. Avoid the outside area if you can... Nice drinks, cool building.
H. K.
Decent pub in a good location overlooking the market square. Unfortunately couldn't give it 5 stars as they didn't have all the drinks on the menu when I visited, however this was handled professionally and perfectly by the server.
O. K.
Nice pub with nice drinks. Pizzeria next door Brick will deliver lovely pizza to your table in the pub
F. S.
Nice spot next to the busy market, good selection of beers on tap and a great selection of independent bottled beers, gins, wine & other alcohols available for purchase
E. S.
Good range of drinks to choose from, we went on a Saturday and drank Orchard Pig ciders outside. They have a little shop inside now, opposite the bar, where they sell local beers/wines and gift items. Menu looked nice, not great for vegan options on the most recent Saturday we went but we've had some great vegan food there before (Sunday roast particularly!) I believe on occasion they let people eat pizzas from Brick next door outside.
C. R.
Great traditional pub at the heart of the fine city. The food is great if you want a traditional pub dinner with a twist and the choice of drinks excellent. There is a great seating place overlooking the market, a bar area and two upper rooms which each have their own charm. Something for everyone from a much overlooked pub.
M. R.
One of many deceptively good pubs hiding around Norwich. Lovely old building with three floors of indoor seating. Decent array of beer and cider with a decent bit of stock rotation.
It's nothing special, it's not a dedicated ale House or genuine local product market or any other 'unique selling point' designed to get itself on tourist trap lists. It's just a pub, but it's a nice one worth stopping by if you fancy a quiet drink in the city.
S. Y.
Friendly bar by The Market. Great selection of Local Ales .
They also kindly permit food purchased from the Market stalls to be consumed on their premises when purchasing drinks from their Bar.
D. L.
Awesome chicken and mushroom pie and mash😋 top food and very friendly attentive staff👍🏻 cannot find fault!
m. d.
Lovely little pub. Good selection of beers. The hop lager is superb. Great atmosphere. Returned today.14/9 / 17. Had a pint of hop lager. Beautiful. Unfortunately the place smelt like a public toilet. Awful. Need to sort it out. 18/2/18. Back again. Lovely pint and smell all gone:). Well done.
R. W.
We went here because we had a Spree voucher, but we are so glad we did! It's a real hidden gem of a pub. We had a really tasty lunch, reasonably priced. The menu caters well for vegetarian and gluten free options too. The view was fantastic from upstairs, overlooking Norwich Market. There was a wait for the food, but it was freshly prepared and we couldn't fault it. Friendly, helpful staff made it a lovely place to visit. We will definitely be returning!
R. S.
Decent boozer. Shame there isn't much room indoors.
P. M.
Excellent pub. Great tapas style food and good beers. Also excellent that consumption bid food from the market is allowed on weekdays subject to buying a drink.
Superior character filled pub with friendly and helpful staff. Well worth a visit.
a. m.
Excellent tapas, and good value if you go when there's a deal on. Very pleasant pub too, nice atmosphere, open quite late and seating outside if it's warm enough. Beer selection is reasonable, normally 3 or 4 local ales featuring the less ubiquitous locals, plus Lagunitas IPA and Camden Hells on keg. Some bottles in the fridge, the selection used to be more adventurous but I don't think they sold well enough sadly.
N. W.
Brilliant place, friendly staff
P. H. (. P.
Lovely, friendly city centre pub. My dog is always welcome. Indoor and outdoor seating. I've not used the restaurant but small varied selection of good beer
A. M.
Great beers and fantastic staff
R. C.
Strange little pub in a great location. The food is all in the same rough price range and is largely on the pricey side. There is limited space and the tables outside are at a surprisingly steep angle. Worth a visit if you are in the city centre.
E. D.
Decent pub in the city centre, good choice of drinks including Kozel, which is a Czech beer rarely seen on tap in UK. One way system in affect through the pub and masks to be worn whilst being served.
E. C.
One of my favourite spots great beer and wonderful building
F. R.
Great city centre pub, in a charming old building with several levels and old features. Right next to the market. Good beers. Awesome sausage rolls and other full meals. Highly recommended as a break from shopping.
B. J.
Never been in here in 25 years of going to Norwich, a firm favourite now and the Japanese pop up restaurant was amazing.
H. R.
Perfectly positioned in the middle of town, this pub is in a prime spot. The place to be for any major event in the city, from 5th November fireworks to the Norfolk and Norwich Festival, there is always a great atmosphere in the pub and a brilliant view from the benches outside. A historic building, a cracking sunday lunch and we can even take the pooch - what more could you ask for?!
S. C.
Informative (wine savvy) and friendly staff, characterful interior, heritage building and a cool, mixed crowd right next to Norwich's award winning market. Four stars as I over indulged....😉
O. F.
Great location. Large range of drinks, food and byo pizza from Brick.
D. D.
When I were a lad, always thought it was shifty. But been there a couple of times in the last year and appreciated their dedication to good beer and their odd layout (properly ancient building with narrow stairs and uneven floors etc)
Adds a bit of character to the city centre, and handily placed for a quick pint on a visit to town
M. S.
The building is very old and if you go upstairs you can get a really lovely view of over the market and looking at Gaol Hill and City Hall. It does get very busy and crowded and can take a while to get served when it does as the bar is quite small. The drinks are expensive but it is slap bang in the middle of the city so there is your reason. The upkeep of such an old building must also be quite high.
Originally called The Sir Garnet Wolseley, the pub was closed for many years before being refurbished and taken over by new owners. It sits behind St Peter Mancroft Cathedral.
It has about 5 picnic benches outside which can be used by smokers. There is an incline so they are not totally level but you won't roll off! There is a small stone baked pizza place joined to the buildings which is a separate business but is good.
The British tapas they offer is nice but also quite expensive. The ale selection is usually an Adnams and some other light ales, which is a change from when it was first open as there was more variety. There is nothing really exciting anymore. The indoor seating can be a bit tricky to find as there are a few floors and they tend to hire out the top room. The toilets are rather odourous, they do apologise for the old plumbing, there isn't really much they can do about it without overhauling the entire lot. But given it's historical value I would pay a visit if you are just passing through.
M. T.
DOG FRIENDLY!!
Great pub with a good selection of beers and food. Staff are always lovely and there is plenty of space for sitting inside and out. One of my favourite pubs in the city.
R. K.
A gem in the heart of Norwich, great beer, wine XXX. With friendly staff and a nice shop next door selling local products.
S. M.
My favourite pub in Norwich. Relaxing for a lunchtime pint. Good music.
H.
Chap behind the bar was brilliant, explained everything and was really lovely. Good beer, good place to sit. Would recommend.
M. L.
Good beers friendly service... Clean and tidy and still has atmosphere even in today's climate..
S. B.
Quirky little pub tucked away behind the market. Tourists will love the traditional "little English pub" vibe, split over multiple floors. Locals love it for the friendly atmosphere.
P. K.
Only stopped here for afternoon drinks but there is a range of alcoholic and non alcoholic available from attentive staff serving at tables
D. D.
Great local brews and knowledgeable staff. True public house that allows outside food. Go here and they will serve you a beer you will always remember.
m. m.
Well it is little pub of little rooms which is nice, unless you in between 2 noisy groups
S. S.
Cool pub in the very middle of Norwich overlooking the City Hall and Norwich Market.
I. V.
Not the best beer selection for someone who prefers Belgian beers but lovely pub, nice staff and great music. A funky by chilled place. I like it there 😊👍
C. P.
Average pub, average beers. Location nice. Venue nice. Maybe get someone older than 14 behind the bar, or at least teach them how to pour a pint and how to clean a table
K. R.
Good, old-fashioned pub but with real ales/lagers/ciders. Has a food menu but during the week you can buy food off of the market and eat in the pub so long as you buy a drink
L. S.
Great looking pub, shame they don't make lattes.
P. C.
3 handpumps. 2 beers. Nice cool temperature. Both too hoppy. Both taste the same. No traditional bitter. Lovely spot. Friendly staff.
D. C.
Overlooking Norwich market. Very old building. Quirky little place. Nice for a couple of quiet pints or a glass of wine. Good rest-stop if you're bored of shopping
D. P.
Great pub just off the market. Lots of inside and outside seating and the building itself has a lot of character and history. Good and cost on the inside for winter, open and airy for summer.
P. M.
Good inner city pub . Not enough left!
K. B.
Friendly staff, cozy environment but chilly on cold days/nights.
G. W.
A proper market boozer serving light food and real ales, with a smattering of good quality gins and whiskies. Sadly its long history lets it down a bit as it's generally cold through winter and often smells of sewers.
D.
Great little pub with decent beers.
S. T.
Fantastic pub in the middle of the city with great views over the market grateful winter and summer drinking good selection of ales beers spirits had a decent food menu you would definitely recommend it if your on a pub crawl for fancy a drink in Norwich
d. s.
Only ever been here when visiting Norwich City. Handily placed near the market. Good range of beers. Good service. Pub is spread over three levels.
I. H.
The sir garnet is the go to "shopping pub". When in the centre of town it's always worth popping into for a quick pint. The food changes now and again and varies dependingly, I've had some great food here and some so so. The George Plunkett room has great views over the market at night.
O. P.
In complete contrast to the first review, I absolutely loved my brunch club experience today at the Sir Garnet.
I was greeted on my arrival by one of the cool, friendly bar staff, I choose a house Virgin Mary which was only£2.50, followed by a Rum Cask 'Pirate' cider, which was great (well worth trying).
There were 3 vegetarian options on the menu, which I thought was impressive considering the chef is known as the 'Baron of Beef'!!
For my brunch I had Kedgeree, which was lovely, and served by the chef himself, who came and sat with us briefly to make sure everything was ok with our food (which it was). The kedgeree came on an enamel camping plate, which was quirky.
I couldn't remember how long it took for the staff to collect our plates, because I was sitting in the sun reading one of the Sunday papers, drinking!
So if you want to be served by some really cool bar staff, in an Independently owned pub in the city centre then the Sir Garnet is one to try.
If you're looking for pub with a menu of 85 dishes and a bar which serves 12 cheap lagers, 15 reasonably priced Chardonnay's, with kitchen staff who have just left school and are hidden far away from the customers, then the Sir Garnet isn't the right pub for you...but then again that's why we have Wetherspoons!
B. M.
Great atmosphere in the heart of Norwich. Lovely welcoming staff, I'll be back in the near future.
D. T.
A pleasant drink here on Thursday evening. Friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Ideal for that relaxing drink when Thursday night late shopping. Very civilized drink and good prices.
C. L.
A great place for a drink, with a cosy atmosphere.
Pizza can be ordered from Brick Pizza next door, which is nice if you're hungry.
d. g.
Good beer great prices and a friendly service. Plenty of seats outside for the sun and there was some 60's music playing which was really enjoyable.
O. W.
A great pub on the market square. Great for some refreshment after having a walk around. There is certainly a contemporary vibe to the historic pub. Highly recommended.
D. M.
Relaxing environment just after the working day for a quick pint. Solid beer, with 3 draft options and great classic pub food, scotch egg.
E. V. O.
Really nice and in the best place. Having a beer there it's perfect evening time. Excellent sausage rolls.
M. G.
Great location, good real ale selection and friendly staff, plus you can eat food from Brick's pizza next door without any problems
J. W.
Often go to the Garnet when visiting Norwich. Great pub with good ale and food.
c. b.
Good amount of tables outside and quick table service. Wide selection of craft beers and ales too
H. F.
Really lovely squid but lemon mayonnaise seemed to be just mayonnaise with a slice of lemon. Drink's were ok but limited choice due to the gas going on the pumps. Seemed a bit chaotic but that was due to it being busy.
E. A.
Great town centre pub, some interesting and we'll kept ales, good food and a great place to watch the bustle of the market from.
C. C.
Lovely pub overlooking the market. Friendly staff.
L.
the service, food and drink is amazing!
really lovely atmosphere in the evening :)
S. W.
Great central pub for a lunchtime pint in the sun - The interior is a bit cold and without atmosphere despite being a quirky pub with an odd layout - Still a decent place to go!
M. S.
Hidden Gem right in the city centre. Guest kitchens with good food.
A. T.
Just rating as a drinks venue. Helpful bar staff and a good old interior. Beers decent and none of the mainstream guff.
E. W.
Friendly bar staff, nice drink options and their pricès are great too. Lovely place.

A little crowded so we sat outside with a bottle of wine. Who would have believed we could sit outside in November. House wine was nice.

Amazing view from the top floor, delicious brews and absolutely awesome ploughmans!

I like the small front bar, three real ales on (too cold, but that's usual these days). They should change the name to 'The Alf Garnet'
D. H.
Beer is good and there’s a fab top room. Avoid the bar food, it’s not good.
