Reviews of Rose & Crown PH
W. B.
Beer excellent and food home made, freshly cooked and the best home made Scotch egg I have ever eaten. Fish pie looks good too.
J. T. C.
Serious jazz sessions on Sundays escorted by nice food options like the sausage and cheese mash + Paulaner on tap!
D. D.
Nice Pub, friendly staff, good food - my favourite when in Oxford 👍
S. L.
Perfect spot in Oxford to sample some local ales and a decent array of gin! Friendly staff. Cute out front terrace and out back garden and a quirky little indoor space with nooks and crannies. Food is smelled delicious lots of garlic.
D. M.
I dived in to this lovely old pub in the Jericho area of Oxford after viewing the excellent Pissarro exhibition at The Ashmolean museum earlier.
Haven't managed to go to either for nearly three years.
(I live in London.)
The Rose and Crown still has the original old wooden bar area plus other nooks and crannies, and a meandering garden at the back.
There is a good range of real ales on, including Old Hooky of which I consumed two pints served in jug style glasses, along with some crisps and nuts.
There is a nice traditional food menu.
This is a pub to have conversations with friends.
It is has a wonderful laid back atmosphere.
One can think and ponder and philosophise here, and read a book too.
Give it a try.
K. T.
Lovely beer garden real sun trap. Good choice of beers we just had sandwiches but very nice. Staff were friendly. I would certainly recommend
I. V. E.
Top notch real ales, friendly staff, old school atmosphere, all in all a gem of a pub in north oxford for when having drinks with some friends.
S. B.
What a lovely small pub. Great beers and a good selection of whisky.
They have an outdoor area and have live Jazz at certain times.
The outdoor area has sparkly lights so I can imagine it has a lovely atmosphere in the evenings.
B. M.
Cracking old style proper pub. Great atmosphere and the drinks are always quality
T. K.
Great pub, good beers on tap and jazz music on Sundays.
D. T.
Solo traveller was made very welcome in this small but perfectly formed pub. Good Hook Norton beer in choice.of jug or straight good pub fare menu and a lovely atmosphere and attentive staff.
J. K.
Great Sunday roast and Jazz night. Can't wait until the next one.
j. f.
Fantastic hospitality. Top roast dinner...Best I've had from a pub. Lovely, buzzy atmosphere. Will go back as soon as I can.
S. H.
Love it here and also go when we visit Oxford. Quaint and full of nooks and crannies. Good selection of beers etc. Also good non alcohol selection
T. A.
Enjoyable jazz nights, good local real ales on tap
D. C.
Went here for dinner this evening with my family, and the service was amazing, the two waitresses we're very friendly and welcoming. The food was traditional pub food, with a decent size menu. It was served in good time, with very reasonable portion sizes and tasted great.
Tucked down a quiet alley, along with a few other nice shops, its a lovely place to go for something to eat or drink without being in the centre of the city.
Will be back next time I'm in Oxford.
A. C.
Olde world charm, covered beer garden and a wonderful room since 1856. Have visited on several occasions in recent years. The first was a friends birthday party several years ago. I arrived presumptiously with a cake which had sat on my lap in a taxi. None of the bar staff batted an eye lid. I just stated I would return in an hour. Towards the end of the evening the landlord invited us into the room at the rear of the beer garden. We were undisturbed, gazing at fellow drinkers on a warm summer night. All pubs should be like this.

Great place.
Wonderfull service.
Very tasty.
Recomended 💛🖤
g. t.
Lovely pub good service great food .We went to the ivy previous evening and we preferred the food here. We'll worth a visit
D. G.
Quaint and friendly pub. Good selection of beers available.
C. C.
Just left this delightful pub. Fish pie gorgeous, hubby had pie and chips and said was excellent. Cider and Trinity beer tasted great. Lovely, welcoming staff and quirky owner. Highly recommend this little gem.
N. H.
Great pub grub and a decent pint of ale
M. H.
We found this quirky little place down a narrow side-street off the Banbury Road. During daytime the closed road has tables for outside eating. Inside is quite small but there is a covered rear courtyard with "tables with heated legs!". The seasonal menu included pies called "Deer Santa, Cristingle and Christmas Cracker". I had Debbie's Fish Pie with peas - very tasty. They also did a very warming Whisky-Mac!
J. H.
It's a traditional pub in so many ways. However its creaky furniture and cramped spaces don't have the same old-English character of others - perhaps less popular - in Oxford. Good pub grub though, with a pint of sausages a favourite.
W. C.
Lovely pub, really nice staff, amazing food and nice beers. The outside area is heated very well, and the inside is as well decorated as the outside. Will most definitely be returning!
P. D.
We attended a birthday party for the local CAMRA magazine editor on July 31st. The way the staff served us and made sure all were safe was exemplary. The food supplied was also superb, and there was plenty to go around. Many thanks for the afternoon, I hope that one day we are able to return.

Fab food and great service in quaint pub. We've visited before and returned. Back beer garden is so peaceful. Hidden gem.
d. b.
Becoming scarce to find, a proper old style English Inn. Nice back outdoor area.
R. v. A.
What a lovely gem! So happy we stumbled upon it on our visit in Oxford. Beautifully located in picturesque little street in the North of Oxford. Andrew the landlord is probably the best example of what a pub landlord should be like, welcoming, friendly, great sense of humour and makes sure all your needs and wishes are fulfilled. We absolutely loved it!!
B. D.
My first time at this venue and really enjoyed the atmosphere. Thank you.
r. s.
Very quick and professional service. 3 real ales and all in very good condition. For someone from Barnsley the prices were a real shock but I gather this is normal for Oxford. The same applies for food. Great tasting but a shock. You would not believe the price discrepancies between North and South.
N. L.
Fantastic food, lovely staff. Well worth a visit try the pies if you get a chance.
N. W.
Great service, good beer, small and multi-roomed, it's a bit difficult to get a seat at times.
s. k.
Ploughman's and Bristol Stout - excellent combination.
B. A.
Lovely old pub, good beer with good pork pies on the bar
D. P.
I love this quirky little place. My first visit and hopefully not my last. Milk stout was delicious. Very friendly staff.
A. P.
My favourite pub in Oxford. Great Food, awesome selection of beers, and incredibly nice people.
To add - it's a bit of an Oxford Ice Hockey museum! I'd highly recommend popping your head in if you ever get the chance.
j. A.
One of my favourite pubs. Helpful, friendly staff, excellent food, and some nice ales on tap. The interior is a snug, cosy and warm place to be, but the garden is the true gem of this pub. With the retractable roof, it's good in any weather and I've spent many a happy hour there. Couldn't recommend this place highly enough.
M. S.
Great food and service with the added bonus of a jazz night- what's not to love about this little gem!
P. T.
One of the few pubs that's been 5 stars for the 30 years I've lived here. Hadn't been in for a few years but amazing as always last night. Is there a better pub in Oxford?
C. R.
A pint of sausages, brilliant idea!
M. K.
Old style pub with great natural air flow. Knowledgeable and friendly bar tender. We got to speak to the owner and he was a great guy. Also, they have takeaway cartons for the draft beer. They looked like milk cartons. Such a great time. We'll be back.
C. C.
Classic pub. Quite a nice atmosphere.
J. W.
Quite expensive, but also probably the best pub in Oxford. Fantastic drinks, great staff, eccentric locals, good food. The real winner is the garden - plenty of yellow benches all set out like cubicles with grape vines overhanging. The roof can be opened in the summer and they have outside heaters for the winter. Lovely.
R. H.
Fabulous local pub run for thirty years by a lovely couple. Great selection of beers, always a local option on draught and always something nice in the fridges.
The atmosphere here is perfect community boozer: a proper mix of people and all welcome in the small set if three rooms and a big outside patio space.
Food is great; honest pub fayre but done with generosity and a home cooking approach: so you get big plates of tasty food from decent ingredients.
The Scotch eggs and pork pies are always available right off the bar and are brilliant.
One of my top three Oxford pubs.
J. F.
I like this pub, for me it's a quiet friendly pub out of the way from the city centre. Very good beers on sale, not rare or extra special but the cellerman knows how to keep a beer in to condition. Nice food, jazz music some weekends, lots of space to sit outside. Go and have a look
S. J.
Quite probably the best public house in Oxford.
A warm welcome from the genial, slightly eccentric landlord.
I didn't try all the ales on offer but the ones I did (Adnams and Hook Norton) were served at a perfect temperature and could not have tasted better.
The heated, covered courtyard - where we made some great new friends - makes this as close as you can get to the perfect drinking venue.
B. C.
I have visited the area two times in the last few years (from the U.S.), and this is my go-to pub for meals whenever I am near St. Hugh's and do not have a dinner arrangement. The proprietors are kind and responsive. I have visited only during cold seasons, but the atmosphere in this pub has always been warm and relaxed. The pub food is quite good as well.
D. B.
Brilliant old fashioned pub, with some outstanding food 😊
B. B.
Great beer superb food home made and cooked. Never disappointed with this pub over the years.
A. M.
Fantastic pub, friendly and welcoming with great food. They’ve taken excellent steps to make you feel very safe in the current climate. I would definitely recommend the pub to anyone visiting Oxford.
L. S. M.
Nice pub with classic comfortable feel and usually always busy. One thing that stood out to me was the menu item called 'pint of sausages'. I asked the lady at the bar whether it really was a pint of sausages and she said 'yeah, it's a pint, with sausages in it'. So when I ordered it and it arrived I probably shouldn't have been surprised to get a pint glass full of sausages. Good stuff.
M. H.
Very pretty pub with bags of character, situated on quiet commercial side street with artisan shops. Also has a beer garden with retractable roof so you can sit outside in the rain. Good beer selection.
E. B.
The inside smelled faintly like standing water (musty, damp), so we sat outdoors which was alright. They have heat lamps so it is comfortable when the weather is cold. However there is not a great selection of beers, so I would not come here if you are keen to have a wide selection or looking for a craft beer.
R. L.
Never too busy, can always grab a table outside, rain or shine. Friendly atmosphere. Classic pub food. Good selection of beers, would recommend the stouts!
A. O.
Cider, Bangers and Mash, fish and chips, ambiance was just perfect!
m. h.
This is a quaint little pub in a beautifully illuminated North Oxford Road. The beer garden is a hive of friendliness. Offering occasional live Jazz.
Great ales, local made sausy rolls, scotch eggs. The staff positive and polite. They have a pullcord behind the bar to open the door to the garden, should you be balancing drinks.
A. G.
The best pub in England so far. The owner is an amazing welcoming gentleman. Staff is amazing! The venue looks beautiful. Garden is a gem. Drink menu is awsome because there are some stuff I can't find enywhere else in UK.
I highly recommend visiting this pub!
P. S.
Pleasant. The beer was good and they have a good selection of wine with an eye for detail. The young man running the bar could be more welcoming and amenable to visitors... Hence the three stars... Perhaps it was a bad day?
D. C.
A traditional TINY Oxford pub. The front room has only three tables (plus a piano) and the back room (where the bar is) has two long tables and benches. There are stools and benches in the corridor. The lovely back courtyard has more seating though but some complex rules on signs everywhere that limit where and when you can stand, drink, eat and smoke. I suppose this is all part of the quirky nature of the place but seems unnecessary to me.
Fine real ales, well kept, with one guest ale option. Good selection of interesting bottled beers. The tiny bar seems well stocked with spirits and mixers too.
Food is genuinely excellent pub grub (strangely lacking in the north oxford area where everything seems to have gone a bit artisan Hipster for my liking). Fish and Chips £13 actually turned out to be breaded plaice but was delicious and served with crusty bread, excellent chips, tartare sauce and mushy peas. Toasties are also great, little touches like a pinch of fresh parsley make all the difference.
Camra members get a small discount on real ales but having heard about the place in Camra’s book I was disappointed to find this doesn’t apply on Fridays or Saturdays. What a shame. If it wasn’t for this and the inability to pay for a pint on contactless (£5 minimum for cards) I’d give the place five stars.
D. R.
Lovely friendly little pub, good beer and atmosphere.
M. A.
Great jazz on a Sunday evening in the courtyard. Just a shame the landlord allows smoking out there (even encouraged by the placing of ashtrays at each table), even when the roof goes over. Good atmosphere otherwise.
S. K.
Great pub. Nice atmosphere, excellent landlord, good beer & food, plus killing live jazz on Sunday evenings. Well worth stopping in.
g. b.
Visited yesterday, apparently the landlord and landlady are away on holiday so a friend is covering. Ordered 2 pies one with chips and one with mash. When delivered the chicken pie and the mash were unfortunately not hot so had to send back. when the replacement came back it was nice and hot. I'd almost finished mine by this time and the chips which previously had been some of the best i'd ever had (triple cooked apparently) were bog standard. If this had been our first visit I doubt we'd go back. Perhaps I might not have food next time :(
Previous comments: Good pub, on the small side inside but large covered and heated outside area. Friendly staff good ales and great food. What more could anyone ask for 😁
A. H.
Andrew the proprietor is a gem of a guy, make friends with him and he'll make this pub the best local you've ever had. No matter what the weather or time of year the back pub garden is simply the best in Oxford, great atmosphere plus the backroom can be booked for a group and sometimes even a barmy lock-in! Probably my favourite pub in the world.
V. W.
A real landmark in this delightful corner of Oxford. The friendly landlord has been there since I was a young man and doesn't look any older - a landmark in himself! Fullers beer, well-kept ales. Nice beer garden.
S. B.
Cosy, small traditional pub on Banbury road. They serve exceptional fish and chips. Food options are not too great except a few dishes on their menu but ambience and feel is very nice.
D. S.
Nice but pint is £6.30
A. J.
A bit overpriced and the table was dirty in the garden.
Not so impressed. The food isn't special or that good either.
S. Q.
This is a very old pub with lots of devoted local patrons! The food is very good, affordable and plentiful! The beers and ales are excellent! Very cozy atmosphere with very friendly staff!
B. A.
Excellent food and drink, great service and very friendly staff.
J. T.
A classic English pub. It’s not fancy, it’s not pretty, but it has charm and good beer and friendly staff and patrons. What more do you really need! Not the nicest, but possibly the best pub in Oxford.
l. b.
Proper old school pub. Good ale and nice pub grub. Occasional live jazz in the garden is a really nice touch. They do charge for card transactions so try to bring cash.
J. K. M.
Cozy, friendly pub with traditional British ales (i.e. real ale), good food (including Sunday roast), and WiFi. Indoor and outdoor seating. Mix of students, faculty, and locals of all ages and backgrounds. Family owned and run. I highly recommend it.
E. S.
It's a good pub. Original. The service is good and the food, in general, is reasonable. The pies, hamburgers and the pints are really nice, but I ordered a chiken and didn't like it at all.
R. M.
One of the best pubs in Oxford. It's a little out of the way but it's on a really beautiful street. Good outside area and friendly bar staff. Especially good for may day morris watching.
G. H.
Great little place with a courtyard at the back with removable cover. Landlord/Lady have been running it for years and their hardworking attitude is evident everywhere. Look out for music, they have some fantastic local musicians play there.
G. C.
Good well kept ale in a lovely traditional pub setting. Can get busy so get in early if you want a table. Large outside seating area at the back.
G. S.
A traditional pub with great atmosphere and friendly, helpful staff. Perfect for a pint of your favourite tipple and a few chums to enjoy an evening.
J. S.
Great place for open air jazz. Food was good, solid pub grub. It gets very busy so there can be few places to sit. Best to get a seat before ordering food.
B. H.
Great pub full of local beer and local beer drinking eccentrics. Nice outdoor space and historic interior. The place is littered with twee imperialistic quotes and anti-EU stickers which can be a bit off-putting.
B. J.
Lovely atmosphere from the get-go.
Had a cozy milk stout and perused their literature selection, having learned for the first time the name of Tommy Cooper.
Lauren was especially kind and helpful ;)
W. W.
Utterly shambolic decor wise. Hasn't been painted for decades. Adequate food . Excellent beer. Brilliant staff. Nice clientele. I love it.

Aan de noordkant van Oxford ligt deze gezellige oude pub. Voornamelijk veel studenten. Het oogt allemaal rommelig en gedateerd maar dat geeft ook wel weer een apart sfeertje. Ruime keus op de tap. Vriendelijke bediening!
