Reviews of St Aldates Tavern
F. M.
I don’t normally leave a review but I absolutely have to. This pub is beautiful, they have an incredible selection of craft beers and the bar tender is knowledgable and perfect at recommendations. I wish I lived closer! Thank you so much!
D. K.
Cute and cozy bar with really nice atmosphere. Place to chill out with a drink or two. Special respect to the sense of humor!
J. G. L.
Very nice tavern. Really good selection of beer and the people know what they are talking about when it comes to beer
H. d.
Visited this pub on our last night of staying in Oxford. Great selection of beers and lagers which I'm a little ignorant to as am a cider drinker, but tried the bar tenders recommendations which were great.
Lovely atmosphere and lovely staff
A. S.
I would have given a much better rating, but when I got home I looked at my receipts and realised I had tipped twice.
The bill included a 15% tip, but when presented with the card reader it asked if I would like to tip. So I did, not realising that the bill already had already included a tip.
I think that this is sharp practice, so unless I receive an apology, I won't be going back, which is a shame as I visit Oxford every fortnight and the ambience, staff, food and beer were very good.
W. W.
Small but great. Often has the sports on and you can reserve a table upstairs for big matches. Friendly staff and in the Summer great with the doors thrown wide.
J. W.
Lovely venue for Folk Weekend Oxford. Very intimate and relaxed.
P. H.
Lovely pub, not to busy and reasonably priced
A. C.
Popped in for the England ladies football final. Found a seat at the bar and never had to leave as the helpful bar staff( in particularly a young blonde lady) kept the drinks flowing without having to ask!
J. A.
Very friendly staff and a lovely meal. Fish and chips, vegan burger and beef burger were all amazing
r. M.
Nice looking pub. Pricey Sunday lunch.
I didn't enjoy the food. Disappointing.
A. F.
Visited on a Monday quiz night & was v good. Mixed customer age range but quiz was popular with students. Staff friendly and personable. It is a cashless bar, which isn't a problem but might be something to note. Food menu is limited but enjoyed what I had.
O. W.
Really nice place for a drink with your mates. Some of the food seems a little pricey and while it’s not terrible I’m not sure I’d have paid that much had I seen what it would look like before. However the atmosphere is good, the staff are friendly, and everything gets served pretty quickly.
c. s.
Really good old fashioned pub. Great selection of real ales and lagers. Have two TVs in the bar so a great place to watch sky sports. The menu looked really good though I didn't partake, the fish and chips looked and smelled really good. Staff are very friendly. Be going back to watch more football, beer and maybe the fish and chips.
M. F.
If you're spending your day in Oxford this is a great alternative to have some lunch. Delicious dishes and very kind staff.
S. F.
Great place for a quick stop in Oxford for beer and food. Three bean chilli very nice.
H. S.
We used the app to order and it was great, really fast service although there are no visible table numbers so we had to ask. Food was delicious, we had chips and nachos - I'd very happily visit again.
I. P.
Good food and beer. Good and friendly staff. Good pub for when you are in Oxford!
R. (.
Nice pub atmosphere large table in rear for a big group.
M. M.
Very pleasant atmosphere of relaxation. Music is not disturbing. So just usual pub. A bit expensive but if is ok for the centre of Oxford. Our burgers were £11,50 and £12
C. O.
Me and my friends had a great time. Lovely atmosphere, amazing food.
M. S.
Friendly staff. Easy to understand menu. Excellent ale. Nice fish and chip.
Z. H.
I visited this pub for some casual drinks with the family. Nice atmosphere, good drink selection and, when we visited it wasn't too busy. Decent pub overall.
S. W.
Great traditional pub, with a solid selection of beers. Regular pub food prepared well. If that's what you're after go for it.
T. F.
Blue room is a good place to meet your friends for a private party. Also appropriated for business happy hour. Fair price and excellent customer service with great sense of humor. Giving your guests a great and enjoyable time. :)
C. W.
Clean, food nice had chips & small nachos (which was a lot of nachos). Not happy they don't take cash, have seen quite a few people come in & see the we are cashless sign & leave). Service good & friendly. Busied up when the football came on.
M. K.
Excellent food, friendly staff, clean, great music playing, good vibes
D. P.
Excellent Sunday lunch, the beef cheek was amazingly tender, gravy and Yorkshire puddings really tasty. All round pretty damn good. Selection of beers and wines on offer. For a Yorkshireman the drinks prices seem a bit high, but that said it is a city centre location in the south of England. Would visit again and probably will.
C. P.
Me and my partner came here while visiting Oxford. We liked the simple menu, you can tell it means the food that is served has all their attention. Really top notch homemade bit of grub. The tropical IPA on tap was to die for! Staff were helpful and really made us feel like weren't just tourists.
E. B.
Easy place to go for a drink. Tends to be quite busy, especially on a match day
C. N.
Lively place with good beer. Nice staff.
T. S.
Great food. Fast service. Friendly staff.
M. R.
Stopped in here on our way home for a pint of ale. Found it very relaxing so we had dinner here also. Enjoyed it so much I treated us to a second drink.
The staff were lovely.
N. W.
Really nice pub, can get very busy at times but well worth the effort
C. J.
Think that this is a hidden gem for sport in Oxford. Always been great service & good food.
M.
Staff very accommodating and nice. Great selection of drinks. One of the best pubs in Oxford!
P. K.
No complaints, but also no reason to go back: fine, but rather lacking in character, in a city full of characterful pubs
K. F.
Nice Old fashioned Pub in centre of Oxford
K. E.
Nice pub with great selection
J. C.
Lovely staff, great service. Highly recommend
E. G.
Great bar for a pre gig pint
N. W.
Excellent selection of well-kept ales. Very tasty pork pies.
Last Friday of each month, they have a lively jazz band in.
Atmosphere wise, it's what I'd call a "through trade" pub. Other punters are usually chatty.
Staff are attentive and cope very well with what can be a crowded bar.
Probably my favourite in town.
M. H.
Cosy pub. The staff were all very friendly! Very accommodating, we had a lovely time.
P. W.
This is a great little pub in the heart of Oxford. It does a wide variety of beers which are continually updated so there's always something new to try however regularly you visit. As someone who works nearby, this is it's great attraction for me. It shows sports as well with a projector and big screen upstairs for the big games. Whenever I've eaten here the food had been great and in the modern English style
T.
Nice place with good drinks, very tasty food and good value for central Oxford.
I. H.
This is a standard pub, nothing exciting. Staff are courteous and helpful. Decent selection of beers and ales though they are on the expensive side. Pub style wines on offer. There is no outdoor space but they do have an extra room upstairs. Really unimpressed by the food, not somewhere to come if you are looking for a good meal.
C. H.
St Aldates Tavern is like a modern version of a proper pub. Decent location, good drinks and a good Atmosphere.
N. O.
Pretty good! People huddled round the bar, like the bar staff might be genuinely engaging and friendly- they were. There was good banter and friendly atmosphere. Ordered drinks and a sharer plate, food was £9.50 for 2 which is a good deal and portion was huge so we couldnt ask for more. It felt cosy, safe and spacious.
T. W.
Smashing pub, nice pint (try the M XL) and a decent meal. Nice one!
J. K.
Fairly good prices but food was average
D.
Recommended to me on Twitter. A nice city centre pub with an excellent range of well-kept beers.
The food menu looked like it included a lot of choice for all, including vegetarians, vegans and allergy sufferers. Was fairly busy as people came out of work on a Friday.
K. B.
The staff are super polite and the food is actually filling and yum, which is unfortunately not so common at pubs around here.
The location and setting is quite nice, and I would highly recommend upstairs seating for afternoon drinks and weekend debauchery!
r. d.
Great place staff very attentive and food great
H. H.
Great pub & atmosphere - well worth a visit when you're in Oxford
H. C.
We had our wedding reception in the blue room and it was perfect. Nick, Hattie, Olly and the other kitchen/bar staff were amazing. They did custom food which was great and provided excellent service. They were all very welcoming, friendly and bent over backwards to make it a special day. Way above and beyond our expectations. Thank you! 😁
V. V.
Good food, reasonable prices, great view :)
R. B.
Good beer and quite friendly staff. Not too busy for a central Oxford pub on a weekday lunchtime. Food could have been better. Sausages in the sausage and fried onion ciabatta were almost cold and the onions were not really fried. Chips were good though.
J. C.
A friendly and comfortable pub in a handy location. Good selection of drinks including some locally brewed. Decent food.
They have a TV and show various sports on it regularly, but rugby seems to trump other sports, so probably a great spot for rugby fans (I wouldn't know 😶).
They also have an events space upstairs which often holds interesting events!
M. W.
Gotta be in the city centre's top ten pubs. Great place for watching sport, especially the upstairs room with its additional bar
R. V.
Probably deserved five stars but I only popped in for a quick pint so can't comment on the cuisine. Quite a good pub, worth a visit. The quality of the beer was excellent.
S. G.
Lovely atmosphere in a historic building. The food was unremarkable pub fare, but well done, and there is a good drink menu. A good place to watch football, and usually quite busy.
C. H.
Great Sunday Lunches. Small friendly pub. Ideal for a pit stop. Toilets could do with a revamp.
M. V.
Brilliantly run pub with awesome food and brilliant beer selection. I have tried 4 plates of theirs and all were remarkable. I would have preferred them to be less hot-spiced but I managed to enjoy the taste. Keep it up
S. F.
Dinner for 23...
pre-ordered and served promptly on Friday evening in the Blue Room, while we also enjoyed the range of beers on tap from the bar below. The food was excellent, and the whole arrangement couldn't have worked out better: well done, and many thanks!
C. K.
Splendid! I hired the Blue Room for my 60th Birthday Party and it was perfect. Lovely venue for a party of up to 50 or 60 people. Amazing food was very fresh and tasty. The bar girl was lovely in our little bar and they cleared up afterwards and wrapped my cake for me. Would highly recommend this for your perfect party
J. P.
Very hospitable establishment. Can recommend their vegan bites. Staff very friendly despite it being a busy day.
B. L.
We went here on a Monday when they had their burger and a drink for £10 offer. Very nice food, especially the skin-on fries. Good selection of real ales as well, I really liked the Trinity
C. A.
Small cosy pub in the centre of Oxford with an interesting range of drinks - Conveniently located near a group of bus stops.
S. C.
Lovely pub bread on sandwiches a bit old otherwise great pub nice staff ...freeze your bread and reheat?
C. O.
In centre of Oxford. Old fashioned pub but the food was exceptional. 3 of us had different things and they were all amazing!
T. B.
Great standard British pub here. Loved the fish and chips. The ales were different from any I'd had before. Lacking a few of the finer details but that's part of its charm.
R. C.
Great place to spend an hour or two
R. H.
Quietly become a really rather nice pub. Comfortable downstairs, great function room upstairs. Food is superb and the beer range varied and good. Friendly staff too.
I. L.
This was a nice cosy quiet pub. They show football matches but in a nice atmosphere. Great music and friendly staff. I’d definitely recommend this pub if you’re looking for a drink and a chat.
J. A.
Best nachos ever! They were not the typical chip, but very different, crunchy, tasty... Maybe handmade?? I don't know, but it was worth it. Other than that, nice staff and clean and good environment.
A. A. J.
Good service, reasonable pub prices...Our evening was spoilt by a very aggressive , confrontational security chap. A real shame because all of the bar staff were chatty and friendly, and calm and approachable, even though it was a busy Saturday. Still worth a visit though.
L. S. M.
Cosy pub. Quite typical town pub layout - thin and long, but doesn't feel cramped. Not much to say about prices - all pubs feel about the same in Oxford - but what marks this one out to me is how accommodating they are for events. You can reserve a space and start a tab really easily. Chips are really great too.
M. J.
Brilliant tavern 🍺 friendly and welcoming will go back again when we are back in Oxford
T. J.
This place is just an ok pub but popular because of its location right in the centre of things. Serves a usual range of drinks and does show live sports so it makes it a noisy place. It's an ok place to go if you need a drink or to get out of the cold.
A. W.
I've lived in the Oxford area for nearly 15 years and have never even noticed this little pub, right in the middle of town near the iconic Carfax Tower. If you're looking for a traditional "British Pub" feel, but in the heart of bustling Oxford, then this is your place.
It serves traditional British ales as well as more "trendy" bottled beers (e.g. Sol) as well as a good range of ciders.
Give it a go - and don't forget to use Google Maps to find it as it's easy to walk past! :-)
F. M.
Good range of local craft ales and not just a standard pub menu. Screens most big sport events. Beer a little pricey for my liking.
R. B.
Really liked this place, nice atmosphere, not too busy. Good beers.
Sadly I was informed that it's a Pokestop... Furthermore Pokemon was explained to me in more detail than I care to know... They'll drop a lure here apparently.
N. P.
Traditional pub. Once a month they have a meet the brewer night where you can go and sample some beers and talk to the brewers who make them. Interesting, cosy feeling. Dog friendly 5 dogs and 5 adults.
W. T.
Good food and good staff!
M. S. (.
Good service
Interesting pub
A. M.
Stunning local venue in the middle of Oxford. Got the upstairs room, turned it into a photo studio for an hour, had an amazing burger for lunch. great staff, great prices.
J. F.
We hired the blue room for an event it was was perfect. The staff were amazing and we had so much flexibility to decorate and make the room our own. I would 100% recommend reserving this space for an event.
M. T.
Don't eat there.
It's a reasonable meet up pub, friendly, large... but...
The food is overpriced and not up to scratch by any stretch of the imagination.
Had a Tomato, basil and Mozzarella salad...
For £8.75, I got one chopped tomato, half a Mozzarella ball and about 10 basil leaves.
To all intents and purposes, that's 50 pence worth of ingredients.
Bottom line, ok place to meet for a drink and that's it.
I've been to this pub a lot over the years - the hype over it's new gastro image has certainly worn off. I preferred it as a bog standard boozer. If you want overpriced average food, hell, go for it. Otherwise, Oxford has *tons* of choice - so avoid for food.
G. B.
The best of the best pubs. A spectacular location, a nice crowd (more graduate students, junior faculty and office staff than undergraduates). Nice drinks and atmosphere. I haven't tried the food.
G. S.
Great pub, downtown and in the thick of it, but still chill
R. P.
We just had Beer 🍺🍻 and 🍊🍍 Juice .Nice place to relax and enjoy .
N. W. (.
Newly renovated chic bistro pub, great atmosphere, amazing food, we had our engagement party in their blue room, still have not stopped receiving great compliments about the food and the place. Love that many people don't know about it yet.
D. N.
City pub. Nice plain room with scrubbed tables. Quiet mid afternoon. Good range of beers and ciders on offer. TV screens for sport.
A. M.
Great pub and nice food
M. E.
Good pub in St Aldate's. The beer is usually kept well and there is usually a good selection. A bit pricey but that is the centre of Oxford for you. Menu looks good too
G. C.
Warm and friendly pub situated opposite Christchurch College. A popular pub for locals, however is rather spacious with upstairs seating. Recently refurbished!
T. S.
Nice place for drinks. The vibe is good
J. M.
Only had the 2 pints here but they were very well maintained.
J. S.
Great little pub, nice selection of beers and wine, food was good, staff very good, covid safe.
J.
probably the best pub in England I have been to! the staff is amazingly friendly, the atmosphere in the pub is really nice and the choice of beers and drinks is excellent! only to recommend!
m. s.
One of the best remaining genuine pubs in Oxford, now Greene King and Nicholsons are gradually taking over the rest. Good range of beers and decent pub grub in historic interior
S. T.
Nice pub, nice atmosphere, great selection of drinks, especially real ales. An enjoyable place to spend a few hours with friends.
W. D.
Very nice experience with friendly staff and a good selection of ales
Would recommend
M. C.
One of the best selections of real ales in Oxford, always worth a visit. Rugby nights, live bands, and board games. EDIT: Under new management, the opening times have been reduced.
p. e.
Had a great time watching the rugby whilst enjoying Sunday roast. Great atmosphere and friendly staff. Definitely worth a visit.
R. T.
Atypical Oxford Tavern with a good selection of real ales and atmosphere in downstairs and separate upstairs bar and meeting area. I had the duck salad which was very nice and the staff were pleasant and friendly
J. S.
Good beer and spirit selection, good food, really nice atmosphere and very friendly staff, would recommend to anyone.
M. B.
Nice looking pub on a busy road. Interior is mainly a big open space, another room upstairs. Decent beer choices.
G. G.
Love that there is usually a selection of xt beer available... One of the best local brewers and it's nice to see more than one on.
It can get quite crowded in here however.
S. M.

S. N.
Location location location. And great service. Can well recommend.
J. E.
Great hosts of Java Oxford MeetUp.
Private room upstairs, great selection of drinks (although no full sugar coke) and a smashing burger.
T. P.
Refreshingly atmospheric pub - good for city gatherings or sitting and chilling. Quite a range of beers and spirits.
I. B.
Generally seems to be a good pub.... However, it's a shame when my friend had been given a "bad" pint of ale (I smelt how vinegary it was!), that his request for a replacement of something else was denied.
C. W.
This unassuming pub does a good line in gastropub fare (see their rotating selection of pies) and has a big, bookable upstairs room. Nice ale selection.
A. G.
Good traditional pub, nice food and the only place in Oxford we could find to eat on a Saturday. Not full of tourists. Really well priced.
S. L.
A friendly pub in the centre of Oxford, with a range of facilities, including a function room and satellite TV screens.
D. M.
Good pub setting serving good beer! Visited during the Folk Weekend so saw some great music in the room upstairs.
G. W.
Not a bad selection of drinks, with a decent selection of interesting ok priced dishes on the menu. The shaksuka was not too subtly spiced (too much heat, not enough flavour).
K. S.
One of the best pubs in Oxford. Great food, varied drinks selection, live sports and great staff. Usually my first choice when I go to the pub.
P. “. P.
Good beers, nice staff 👌
M. P.
Good beers, and at a good price for the city centre. Decent food, and friendly, helpful staff. Definitely one of the better pubs in the centre of town.
C. H.
Good beer and atmosphere
P. C.
It's a pretty decent pub but nothing really different from others. Would recommend anyway. The selection of ales is really good.
C. L.
Cute little pub in Oxford, in a great location near Christchurch college. Great music, good prices and friendly bar staff!!

E. M.
Great food (well the one dish I usually choose and never dissapoint), nice selection of beers and friendly staff!
D. R.
Pleasant city centre pub. Beer was ok.
M. C.
Rugby had been on tv so crowded with people worse for wear. Disappointed with my beer. Has been better on previous occasions.
J. K.
The cost was too high to justify the mediocre food. Burger was nice as were the chips albeit the latters funny colour and texture.
C. S.
I visited St Aldates for a light lunch during the week and I have to say, it completely hit the right spot. I was a charming pub with a cracking atmosphere - a place I will definitely be returning too!
K. M.
Good value. Good food. Good location very near Christ Church. Not a very attentive service staff. Buy very cutely dog friendly for locals.
D.
Great food and beer. Friendly service and generally a very nice pub.
J. C.
Initially good service, nice pizza, service got slower despite there being less customers. A shame as they started well and we enjoyed the food.
R. B.
Nice beers on tap including XT brewery often, good atmosphere for sport and excellent pork pies!
J. C.
I was with my family for our lunch. Good beer, fish and hand cutted chips, mashed green peas and rugby at TV with lots of friendly people around.
W. A.
Nice popular establishment going by crowd numbers while there.Fair selection of ales, all staff friendly and polite.Didn't try any food while there so can't comment but also seemed popular.
B. J.
Great pub, with excellent beers. Didn't try any, but the food looked good too.
G. J.
It's a good place, the fish and chips is really good, there are many beers and some of them are cheap
B. T.
Great beer. Wonderful atmosphere. Sadly the roast has gone down hill and somewhat disappointing.
E. A.
Booked the Blue Room for my 30th - and despite some no-ones-fault teething troubles, it was a fantastic night with excellent staff. Thank you!

Good food, disappointed with the quality of the beer on this visit.

Fast service, pleasant staff, good beers, but no outside areas to sit (minus one star).
