Reviews of The Angel & Greyhound
S. A.
Good standard pub grub, great staff, and a nice atmosphere.
Plenty of outdoor seating to front and rear garden too.
We were able to get a last minute booking on a Sunday for Sunday lunch too which was great 👍
Well worth a visit...
L.
They claim they have the best Sunday roast... and I cannot agree more with it! On top of the amazing food, the beer selection is huge, and the staff is super nice. The beer garden can’t be more cozy and pretty. Definitely a place to go any time :)
A. S.
This place is fantastic. The team could not be more kind and helpful. The garden outside is super cosy. You can’t not visit if you’re in Oxford, especially for Sunday Roast!
C. B.
First time here. Busy roadside pub but lovely surprise of a peaceful floral beer garden at the rear. Plus good food and selection of ales.
C. W.
Really friendly and helpful. Plenty of room inside and out. Lovely wines and great food. A great experience, I really recommend it
T. W.
Beautiful lunch here today. 8 of us eating, all different dishes and all excellent. The service was so cheerful and friendly. A friend bought her little dog and she was welcomed both inside and out - they even provided her with her own doggy bowl and fresh water. Pleasant seating at the front but a super little garden/patio area at the rear. Totally worth another visit.
A. B.
Great food, pricier side! Went there for Xmas with some friends and was extremely satisfied.
G. W.
Nipped in for a bite to eat after being recommended, we weren't disappointed, the food was really nice, the beer was delicious and the staff were courteous and helpful. The pub has a nice feel and a very pleasant little garden at the rear.
R. V.
Lovely pub with delightful garden at the rear. Excellent snacks menu, beware the sandwiches are HUGE. Really nice and friendly service and excellent beer, well worth a visit.
K. D.
Love this interesting pub. Prices are higher than other pubs but the history is fascinating. They say that siouxie sioux used to play here before she was known and it had a big punk following when it was the Oranges and Lemons (why did anyone change that name in St clements?!?). Take a good look at the indoor punk photo-it is mesmerising!
K. W.
10 out of 10 review for customer service and staff but sadly lacking for the food and would echo the previous reviews from the same time period (roast potatoes rock hard, lacked flavor, flat Yorkshires, beef was tough/overcooked) I believe that they are about to change suppliers and revamp things so looking forward to returning in the future and having a roast more like the reviews from 2021
M. F.
Great Youngs pub run very well. Extensive menu and Kid friendly with it.
A. W.
Very good place. I had Angel burger and Special's beer. Everthing was fantastic and great atmophere.
S. T. T.
We visited after a long walk along the river. It was a loo break for us, but we had a drink. Rude to have used the facilities and not purchased something. We sat in front of a lovely hot open fire and drank our beers and discussed the name of the pub. Good selection of cask ales. I drank XT4 brewed in Thame.
R. P.
I would have give 5 starts but I think stuff needs to learn to Acknowledge more at clients and make them feel more wellcome. Customer service and hospitality should always be a priority. Other then that We enjoyed been able to have a date bringing our puppy. Appetizers where tasty!!!
K.
We chose this pub for our weekend away in Oxford Sunday roast lunch after reading glowing reviews as we had no idea about pubs in the area. Please don't be fooled, whilst relatively cheap for a beef roast (£16), I'm disappointed to report that the meat, potatoes & yorkshire were tasteless. And never have we experienced such watery bland gravy. We also purchased mulled wine - a mistake as it was unpleasant.
The upside is that the pub is nicely decorated for Xmas and the staff were very kind & helpful.
D. S.
Nice food and friendly staff. Also a nice pleasant garden.
J. P.
What an amazing Sunday roast. I had the pork and my wife, the beef. Both were excellent and good value for money. It was Sunday lunch and we hadn’t booked but we had a choice of tables inside the pub. The tables in the garden had all been reserved but it didn’t spoil the experience.
G. S.
Beautiful, spacious and good place to eat. Giant plates of food with standard prices. The fish and chips were very good, and also the chicken pie and celeriac risotto. Very slow and basic attention, taking into account the restaurant was almost empty. Clean bathrooms.
J. G.
Great food, atmosphere and service. Perfect pub for a rainy Sunday afternoon after watching the Oxford half!
Amazing roasts with decent amount of crispy roast potatoes.
A. k.
A very cold beer 🍺 on a Wednesday after work. It's a clean place and welcoming.
P. K.
They've got rid of the bar billiards table -- the one thing that used to make this place unique!
J. S.
A fabulous pub with a great atmosphere and an amazing quiz 👌🏻
E. M.
Really nice pub food :) highly recommend the bangers and mash - such a good pub classic when it's done well and this was delicious
P. M.
Lovely pub and fantastic staff. Had a drink there last night during a power cut and they could not have been more accommodating; thank you.
S. A.
Food was delicious, one of the best burgers I have had! Nice environment and really good service
D. R.
Fine for a drink but nothing special, feels very much like a chain pub and lacks character. Also expensive compared to other locals
o. o.
It has a homely feel to it. If you would go there in winter, please book ahead so you won't sit out in the cold. I believe the outdoor would be awesome during summer.
T. P.
Friendly pub with good food and a wide range of beers. Also pretty big and has two outdoor options. Quite a good place to hang out if you're with a group or around St Clements.
Oh, and they are generous to people who just need their loos, which is good of them and a sign of their friendliness.
L. W.
This is my husband’s and my absolute favorite pub in Oxford, and we’ve tried quite a few around the city. The food is delicious and such high quality every time. The environment and interior are so warm and inviting. The staff are delightful. I can’t recommend it enough!
L. B.
We went for Eve of Christmas Eve dinner, and it was perfect! A casual but cozy interior and surprisingly amazing food! It was a little on the pricier side, but the serving sizes were huge! We loved the fish and chips, pulled-pork fries (omg), panko cauliflower, and sticky toffee pudding (honestly, who doesn't like sticky toffee pudding?). Highly recommend!
H. H.
Very friendly staff. Good local cask ale.
A. S.
Really nice beer garden, and the haloumi fries are great
N. M.
Enjoyed watching rugby here. Nice pub with a good selection of beers on tap
M. D.
Pleasant staff. Food was good as usual. Had the fish and chips. Fish is always excellent. Chips are chips. I prefer thinner cuts but that's me. 3 of my friends had the chicken burgers and were delighted. Had a bite and totally agreed. Nice early dinner in the pleasant beer garden on a perfect day.
A. N.
Delicious food, excellent customer service
M. K.
Lovely bar. Good selection of larger and craft beers. The burgers are fab and The fries are amazing. Dog friendly.
L. W.
Really nice pub and friendly people. Good food.
a. t.
Great friendly pub. Bartenders very attentive and has a fantastic atmosphere. Outdoor area is also a plus too!
S. B.
Nice pub, good outdoor space, great chips. Go here to work in the evening sometimes, it's nice and quiet with good WiFi. Gets busoer later on the evening.
M. N.
Just had an early Christmas gathering with mates at the Angel & Greyhound. I love this pub, the atmosphere was great, perfect for good conversation. There's a good selection of beers, the Christmas menu was top draw and the service was friendly and welcoming. Thank you!
A. G.
Lovely pub. Lovely food and lovely bar staff
L. R.
Very nice clean bar, staff friendly and polite, food very good, the fish and chips were delicious and the pork t-bone was equally tasty
v. w.
Loved it, comfy and great food. There’s an air of calm inside.
The chicken burger scored a 9/10 for me, not greasy and with bacon, seasoned really well. The pomegranate was the icing on the cake. I would have given it all a 10/10 if it came with chunky vs skinny chips... 😁
F. A.
The food was great and beautiful pub inside, the only downside is the food could have come out faster. Definitely recommend this pub restaurant
D. K.
The drinks and the service was great, especially the girls at the bar who were super friendly and professional. However, whoever held the pub-quiz could have been a bit more aware of how they spoke to people. It might have been a bad night but some of the phrases came across slightly rude and unfortunately it has put me off from going there again.
A. A. (.
Had a pint, a chat with a mate and I enjoyed it. Watched the world go by but still surprised to see many people wearing masks outside, what the f is that all about?!
C. P.
Competitively priced drinks at St. Clements (bus stop on the opposite side and car park at the rear with the same name).
Ideal for a quick pint, park your vehicle and walk about Oxford city.
Cowley street parallel next cross. Roundabout further on with 5 exits.
Open air seating in the front with beer garden at the rear. Inside the pub, the ambience is great. Locals and regulars galore
Better with company but equally okay for s loner with time and money to spend.
J. A.
A very dry, overpriced and tasteless salad with little to no dressing. It was meant to be roasted vegetables but my sister and I agreed it was more like cubes of boiled vegetables. The garlic bread side though, was brill. Nice selection of beers and really friendly staff but I was disappointed by the food.
H.
Pretty pricey, but isn't most of Oxford?! Lovely place with friendly staff and nice outdoor seating. They even provide blankets for a chillier evening and the heat lamps out the front make it possible to sit out even when it's not that warm. The interior is cosy and has a lovely fire in the winter.
M. A.
Food was really good! The service was good but the guiness was really bad. The bartenders did a one pour and didn't leave it to set and the pint tasted really bad - potentially slightly off. Overall though a good experience, dont have the guiness.
N. K.
Best pub for food in oxford! So good! Drinks very well mixed and good quality too. A bit expensive but worth the treat.
D. J.
Great food and easy to order online.
G. S.
Monday quiz night is popular. If you don't want to play then stay away as it is too quiet to talk without upsetting the players.
Otherwise a great pub.
N. P.
The Angel and Greyhound (originally The Oranges and Lemons) is that rarity, a pub for all people.
No matter what you look for in a pub, you'll find it here. Great beer, an interesting gin menu, friendly staff, and a wide range of customers, from students to old age pensioners.
I highly recommend this pub. In fact I chose it as the "watering hole" to kick off my Retirement Day celebrations. One of their attractions is the range of board games available to put a great spin on your visit
Try it. You won't be disappointed.
t.
Very upmarket pub. Plush leather armchairs, high ceiling, large open plate glass windows, hanging lights, lots of talk about politics going down, and a good selection of ales. Top drawer.
Q. P.
Nice standard pub food cooked well friendly staff. Too wet to use pretty garden
B. E.
Very good beer, Young. Good menu inc. vegetarian. Indoor space pleasant and homely. Outside. Quiet today, good tables, patio with heating. Pleasant service. Not a long wait.
T. W.
Nice local with a fireplace and a decent selection of beers.
A.
Good pub, great mushroom burgers. Not overly expensive by Oxford standards but certainly not at cheap end of the scale.
Outdoor area is great, being partly covered so good for all weather conditions.
p. h.
My boyfriend and I visited this pub twice with his guide dog this past weekend. Friendly staff with knowledge of their ales. Warm and comfortable with a lovely wood fire as a bonus.
E. R.
Food was delicious. Service friendly yet professional. Nice choice of beers/IPAs. Quite impressed.
t. m.
Pleasant pub at the bottom end of St Clements. Mostly a mixture of students and locals. Good food is served and a wide variety of snacks are availiable, although prehaps trying to be gastro, the prices are not too bad either. Do try the local Toad gin, it's a speciality. Staff are generally friendly and polite, and a pleasant atmosphere prevail's. Also dog friendly which is a bonus.
D. D.
Really nice pub on a warm evening.
Only passing through, but made to feel very very welcome.
A truly nice pub to stumble upon before heading out for eats. Put a pin on that map!!!
T. H.
Quiet yet atmospheric, where I could talk and share drinks with friends whilst there being a nice hum around the place. There's a lovely open fire which brings the whole place a lovely smokey smell, which is great during the winter months.
J. W.
Just had a wonderful lunch in the sun. Interesting beer selection, good food and friendly staff.
A. H. (.
A elegant not too busy pub, deserving on the name. And I'm told the Monday quiz night is fantastic fun. Staff are always friendly and chatty
P. H.
Fantastic beers amazing service and great food, in a real pub wonderful 👍
M. W.
Lovely beer garden, friendly staff and bonus for option of jelly beans as snacks
A. B.
Very clean nice bar staff and maneger but a very expensive pint £5.70 for a larger and lime
N. P.
One of Oxfords best pubs. Winter or summer it is a great place to relax with a beer. I do miss the bar billiards, but the atmosphere is always great
L. P.
Cosy fire and prompt service with a decent range of drinks. We've only eaten here twice but both times the food was disappointing: overcooked burger and chips so crispy you could barely eat them.
N. G.
Love this place! My favourite pub in Oxford, mainly because it is the first place I ever had banana beer in! Great staff and tye food is good too!
E. W.
Beautiful Oxford pub by Magdalen Bridge. Cosy open fire in Autumn and Winter. Quiet in the afternoons. Lovely garden/patio in the summer months and heated in winter. Great bar snacks and excellent menu. Bar billiards. Youngs ales and Addlestone Cider. recommend a visit anytime.
c. b.
Lovely often forgotten about pub when choosing somewhere to meet up. Extensive if shaded back garden and pleasant interior. Good staff
M. R.
Great place! The bartender gave me samples of the beer since I wasn't sure what to get. She was really nice about it and explained the types of beer.
j. a.
Easy to get a table. Downloaded app to order food and drinks. Drinks service was quick, food was slow
M. W. M.
Lovely quiet pub with g Rd great garden and the beer was great too
T. S.
Nice, cosy pub. Fairly limited selection of beer available but they're usually good. Blankets and board games (although not particularly great ones) make a nice addition.
M. F.
Wanted to show my Italian friends a proper Sunday roast. Did not dissapoint! Great food and lovely atmoshpere. Dog friendly too.
M. A.
We spent a lovely few hours in ThAngel and Greyhound, immediately being given a warm and genuine welcome by Oliver - who recommended the Hanlons beer from Devon (good choice) and have our dog Stanley a bowl of water.
The menu had some really interesting dishes, not seen before, and all three courses were delicious - checkout in particular the beetroot, mushroom and lentil burger, the slow braised beef ragu and the cherry and almond chocolate brownie served with chocolate ice cream.
By the time we had our dessert, Chrissie (also from Wolverhampton, like Oliver, and also lovely and welcoming) had taken over from him.
Being able to sit in front of the fire and eat, drink and relax was a treat.
And there was some good humour too - on a blackboard was chalked up: Typical English weather 3c - for updates, go outside! ☃️☔️💧
So, if you’re going to Oxford for a day out, or afternoon out, like we are, The Angel and Greyhound is a couple hundred metres /yards before Magdalen bridge and the Colleges and city centre the other side of it.
N. W.
Attentive bar staff. Busy quiz night,. Outside seating,
S. M.
Great atmosphere, local pub, with fireplace decent food, 2 for £10 fish and chips on Friday and reasonable priced menu, good beer, but a little pricey in my opinion, although it's no pricier per pint than most places in Oxford.
E. T.
Lovely well kept pub with attractive outdoor spaces . But they didn't have original coke or Pepsi on draught so had to have diet coke which I didn't like .
D. R.
Really friendly staff and excellent set up for eating, drinking & pub quiz!
M. S.
Lovely pub with a warm and friendly atmosphere. Table service was spot on, one of the best pubs in Oxford
A. T.

T. M.
Good atmosphere, friendly staff.
I'd suggest going on a Thursday night for the pub quiz, but be sure to book a table.
D. S.
Staff nice, pub nice, food a bit pricey .The burger I had was not a £13 burger I think it should be about £9.
n. d.

Youngs pub with a guest beer. Very friendly staff. There are seating areas to the front and back, and a main room with log fire. The food is very pub, but does what it says on the tin.

G. N.
A nice selection of ales and some good food all for a reasonable price.
Definitely a good place for a chat with some colleagues on a Friday evening.
A. S.
As evident you cant rate this a one star place. Simple and humble, yet some great staff and equally great food. Usually correlates with how the moral at the place is at the time.
W. W.
Great selection of drinks, cosy comfy and stylish interior. The beer garden is especially pretty.
C. M.
Always a lovely evening at the A and G. Friendly staff, a good selection of ales (winter warmer a particular favourite), and a large outdoor area, for those brave enough to face the cold at this time of year!
