Reviews of Dolphin Hotel
K. H.
Isn't it amazing when you walk into a pub, and the land lady and her staff know exactly what you drink, give a warm welcome and cheery smile. The other punters in the pub are friendly and welcoming, have a tale to tell and you feel safe the tables, the bar and the toilets are spotless. 5 star pub.
R. S.
Very busy pub on a Friday night, quick service though and some ales on offer which you could try a sample first. I had Atlantic which was well kept and sat outside watching the world go by. A band was setting up so clearly supports local events and entertainment. Plenty of choice where to drink but it is an attractive little pub.
E. V. C.
I didn't realise I would have to take out a second mortgage to buy a pint of diet coke out of the drinks dispenser. Other than that, once the ladies singing team moved on, we could have a good reunion, as there was 51 years worth of catching up to do! Over all a good evening was enjoyed. Thanks.
D. C.
Very nice cask ales in here. Can get very busy at times with people on pub crawls, so they come and go. It's been noted that lager seems to be the favourite drink in here rather than real beer for the mostly young people who visit here.
K. L.
Love this old place, been in the same family for several generations. Lovely charm about the place and the vibrant mix of people of all ages that go in here. A gem that should be on everyones bucket list when in Plymouth. Reasonably priced drink for the barbican location. A must for us on every visit to the city!
J. W.
A Plymouth institution and still as traditional as ever, post-Covid. Great cask ales, often served straight from the cask, especially the Bass and the Tribute. Great cider too. Bring your own food, fish & chips from round the corner etc. Always friendly, always welcoming (to all, not just the regulars) as genuine locals should be.
p.
Brilliant pub in a lovely location with friendly helpful staff serving top quality drinks at reasonable prices, a must visit when in Plymouth 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
D.
On My First Visit to The Dolphin Hotel On the Barbican I found it to be a Very Warm Welcoming Pub Indeed with a Great Atmospheric Presence, 🍷🍾 Great Open Fire 🔥 Welcoming Staff who were Overwhelmingly Busy keeping up with the influx of Customers 🎉🥂🍾 or just having a General Catch up.
To Top it all You could go to the Local chippy and Bring it Inside THE PUB TO EAT 😯 BRILLIANT IDEA 🤩 Fabulous few hours Chilling with Friends👌❤
i. C.
One of the best pints of Bass in Plymouth. Its a local public house frequented by the characters of the Barbican.
K. H.
Best pub ever x everyone is friendly bar staff brilliant x
M. E.
Great pub, couple of do's and don'ts
Do go here if you want a relaxed, informal pub with plenty of chatter, no music and great beer.
Don't go here if you want to be surrounded by pretentious wannabes and girls pouting for their next insta profile pic.
D. T.
Nostalgic pub with authentic old interior open coal fire and excellent service. No food served but they happily allowed food to be brought in from the chip shop and cafe next door.
D. G.
This is the 3rd time been in the Dolphin. And I would say its a brilliant pub. Staff friendly and the customers what go in there are friendly and you do get served a nice pint.i would give this pub 10 out of 10.and the open fires keep the place nice and warm. It is an old traditional pub. Recomend any time..
A. J.
Great beer and very welcoming, pleasant bar staff. Great location for a traditional pub
T. P.
Excellent beers in a superb untouched pub. Paintings by Beryl Cook adorn the walls.
T. T. C.

J. I.
Great traditional pub good consistent real ale and very friendly.. J
W. D.
Best pint of Bass bar none!
N. W.
Hasn't changed a bit since I was last in 35 years ago. Couldn't fault how the ales were kept, all in excellent condition. Very, very busy.
P. A.
Proper olde fashion boozer, £8.59 Guinness and Heineken not too bad for harbour.
C. w.
A real pub with a proper pub vibe. Always enjoy coming here. 🍻🍻
C. H.
Great pub with fab atmosphere, always a good laugh.
J. K.
To my mind best pub on the Barbican along with the Fisherman's. A pub pub, drinkers pub no food but you can bring your own. Good selection lagers and real ales, the Cornish Tribute was perfect. Good friendly service. Highly recommend!
S. “. S. C.
Good old traditional no nonsense pub. On Friday night the small number of staff had an exceptionally high number of customers to serve. It was amazing how they coped so efficiently so no-one was kept waiting and remained cheerful. Good job.
G. P.
I love this place. You will find people from all the walks of life here; just such a great atmosphere. Great for ale drinkers, CAMRA discount and poured straight from the barrel. Excellent. News years day the bar put a cheese and crackers spread on for everyone, and it was packed. Super popular, especially with folk musicians who play tunes in the bar quite often. Open fires, super dog friendly, bring your fish and chips in from the chippy next door and you’re made. Cash only, and bring a lot, their whisky and port selection is rather good as well. Love it.
M. S.
If it's real ale and a friendly traditional Barbican pub this is the place to be.
The Bass from the barrel is always the best around.
Friendly efficient team behind the bar,Dolphin never disappoints.
C. C.
Fantastic local and characterful pub. Full to the brim of local ales and high quality lagers. Spirits are well thought of and considered. Highly recommend to anyone visiting Plymouth, great way to immerse yourself into the locality, history and friendly community.
s. s.
Great Bass n the new paint now looking seasoned.
G. H.
Best pub in Plymouth. Great real ale. Proper old fashion charm.
A. W.
In Plymouth for 2 nights and was looking for harbour side pub with some character. I followed some interesting looking locals into the Dolphin and they turned out to be part of the local folk ensemble. Good choice of ales, friendy land lady & lively fun music to warm the cockles of your heart.
I might just go back for a civilised 1 or 2 tonight!
C. B.
Lovely pub. Lovely atmosphere. The only true unspoilt pub left on the Barbican. First drank there in the 60s.
H. G.
Friendly staff, wide range of drinks
Good community feel
S. S.
Great pub, great pint of Bass, very friendly

Great Ales, great atmosphere, if you're looking for posh you won't like it so stay away! It's definitely our kinda pub and best of all, you can get some fish and chips, or other food and bring it in the pub to eat it - what's not to like.
S. D.
Proper old fashioned pub, great atmosphere and vintage charm.
Nice staff, friendly clientele.
Cheers!
T. W.
My favourite pub in the UK, warm friendly atmosphere and a fantastic range of real ales.
A real drinkers paradise with lots of great characters from all walks of life and very friendly so always someone to chat with.
I just love this pub🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴
A. B.
Historic classic pub which serves the first ever global beer straight from the barrel (Bass). Has to be 5* as it is quintessential pub. Visited during Covid: landlord meticulously disinfects every emptied table and they space everyone out. A must visit for Plymouth.
B. E.
Been coming here for nearly 30 years now. And it's barely changed. Although I've moved away I always pop in for a drink. One of the last, unsullied, unmodernised, genuine British pubs you can experience. Lively atmosphere with a wide range of customers. Long may it last.
I. B.
Extremely Nice place with good real ales worth a visit nice atmosphere
R. M.
Basic, but characterful pub. Excellent range of well kept real ales - no food but great pork scratching.
S. L.
One of the best loved pubs in Plymouth for decades, it has charm and character and has a good range of real ales as well as the usual beers and spirits you'd find at a bar, staff are really friendly and the place has a certain buzz about it that you won't find anywhere else.
P. T.
Excellent bar staff, very attentive, lovely atmosphere, beer very well kept.
I. W.
Brilliant. So friendly and welcoming even in these tricky times. Safe and well managed. Great beer selection and gins. Proper pub and a joy to be part of it for even a few nights.
A. M.
It's an old english pub, they serve beer, cider, ales and draught. No pub grub, but there are bar snacks. Customer service is as to be expected during covid-19, a traditional pub that now offers table service, its not the ritz, but you get the image.
Fun fact: It's also the setting of a few Beryl Cook's paintings.
C. S.
Traditional Barbican pub, full of character
J.
Brilliant traditional pub. However, it can get very busy.
L. M.
Lovely olde world pub with a roaring fire. Good beers, lovely wine, even let you eat your own food in their pub. Bar staff were very friendly and welcoming, and exceptionally efficient.
c. t.
Nice cosy pub.
G.
Great pub greatly staff and always a trip down memory lane when I visit there well recommended.
A. L.
Very authentic old pub in Plymouth.
M. E.
Love this institution of Plymouth. Mixed clientele but always buzzing, plus friendly locals and bar staff. Spit and sawdust kinda place but can't miss it. It has a place in my heart. Beer beautiful.
D. C.
Went in for a drink with friends and there was a an Irish Band on. The atmosphere was great and the band were excellent. Even though the Pub was packed the service was very good. A great place to visit.
Y. Y.
Very traditional and authentic English pub in the heart of Barbican. They have a nice selection of real ales too.
R. u.
Lovely lady great pub
M. S. S.
Lovely local pub full of many regulars, and being from America I wondered if I would fit in. Rest assured this pub is the place to come to meet new English friends. Wonderful place to spend an evening. No strangers here.
J. A.
Ate my chips in here with a pint of proper job! Proper.
D. H.
I think, if you have only pub you're able to visit, in Plymouth, The Dolphin is most probably the one. Excellent staff, causal, talk to anyone atmosphere. Bring in your fish and chips and get a pint of decent ale.
A. H.
This is a perfect pub. No food! Perfection! What you see is what you get. Probably not a good place to take grannie and the children but if you want a pint in a historic and "lively" place you have found the place you are looking for.
N. B.
A wonderful trip back in time! A pub for the colourful occupants of the marvelous Barbican. Food is not served but customers are encouraged to bring in food from other outlets.A Large selection of real ales are served straight from the barrel and in perfect condition.Do visit.
t. 1.
Beautiful selection of cask ales. Great atmosphere. They allow you to take your own food into the pub. Plenty of fish and chip shops so fish, chips and a pint!!!!
E. C.
Legendary pub on Plymouth's waterfront, The Dolphin is a lovely historic old pub with a number of well kept ales, lagers and wines. This was the favourite pub of local artist Beryl Cook who featured this pub in several of her popular pictures. This lovely, friendly pub comes with the highest recommendation as the best pub in Plymouth.
D. Q.
One of my favourite pubs in Plymouth. Locals are friendly, beer is good and well priced. You can bring your own food in here. Fish & chips with a pint. Perfect!
G. Y.
It is the iconic pub of Plymouth. Millionaires, fishermen, eccentrics, musicians and numerous other people come to drink the excellent beer. Bring your fish and chips and if you are lucky catch one of the music sessions, warm yourself by the fire and soak in the atmosphere.
A. C.
Legendary pub and one of the key places for understanding what the Barbican's all about. Eight quality beers on when I last visited
J. K.
It several years since I've been in the Dolphin. If your looking for a good Old Fashion Pub; where you can chat without having to SHUT... it's that kind of place. No loud music in the background, just people enjoying a drink or two. Haven said, it's furniture is stuck in the early 90s & could do with an update/upcycled.
G. R.
Amazing local pub - lots of choice of real ales - staff are excellent - great place to have a good night out.
D. M.
Good old fashioned pub. Music on St the time. Enjoyed my visit.
M. M.
I'm giving it 5 stars,as I've known this pub for over 45 years, from when I was a sailor so for me alot of nostalgia, and it still doesn't look much different now, after all these years, made renown by Beryl Cooke the artist, as this was her then local, good beer selection, full of local Plymouthians. "Proper job" me lovelies.☺
m. a.
Nice enough traditional pub, well located, good choice of beer. The bar staff were not very welcoming, definitely the worst reception we had in Plymouth. Shame.
J. W.
Really enjoyed visiting this bar. Really lovely bar staff, friendly and very helpful. Good choice of beers all with a traditional British Lough atmosphere.
B. M.
Went there recently and was pleased to see it hasn't really changed since I worked there in the late eighties. Try the bass...
V. M.
Great pub, fabulous staff, 😀 quick and friendly service, atmosphere was good pub! We will return 😀
A. H.
A proper pub , where people talk and enjoy them self's , and when the rugby is on the TV is on and atmosphere is brilliant . Pluss fantastic landlady.!!!!
P. S.
Best pint of Bass in the world.
P. A. M.
Tolpuddle martyrs chose this place to have their first drink upon returning home. Beryl cook used to frequent it too and did a lot of her artwork whilst sat at the bar. Some of her original artwork still hangs on the walls. The folks are friendly and the staff are lovely.
P. M.
Well organised, fantastic staff, super service especially Darren and a brilliant atmosphere. All in all a great night out.
W. S.
A real locals place. Good beers. Mainly standing, but a couple of dozen bench type seats. Very friendly staff. Real traditional harbour side pub.
B. P.
Spit and sawdust pub on Plymouth's Barbican.
Don't expect big screens and pub grub, this is a serious drinking hole, but it's a welcoming place with some real characters and old world feel.
Stone floors and open log fires.
A. S.
Excellent pub with good beers and plenty of character
R. W.
One of the best pubs in Plymouth. Old School boozer. Nothing fancy buts bags if atmosphere and a good range of beers.

Decent beer, good service! Remember to go to the cash point before you visit though, cash only (not a deterrent for me, but I did have to run down the road to get cash)
P. S.
They made you feel welcome
B. W.
The best on the Barbican, nothing flash about this great pub, the bonus is NO pool table, dart board or music, just great conversation, a roaring open fire (winter) amazing beer with the best pint of bass in Devon and Cornwall, if you are in the Plymouth area DO NOT miss a chance to visit this awesome place situated in the heart of one of the most historical cities in England, plus it's only a stone's throw away from the famous Mayflower Steps.
