What a smashing little pub! Had a fantastic lunch here with family.
The restaurant serves up tapas style dishes and an amazing roast. It’s served up on sharing platters so everyone can dig in and help themselves.
Great local produce and cooked beautifully.
P. S.
Beer was ok but it could have been better. The food however was fantastic. It's a small plates/meze/tapas menu, cooked over a wood fire (you can see into the kitchen) , nothing pretentious here just simple well cooked food, we had 5 dishes all were delicious, the dishes arrive when they are ready so done expect all dishes to arrive together.
This place is well worth a visit.

Just had an absolutely fantastic Sunday lunch at this lovely pub, very friendly & welcoming. 3 meat roast was lovely &the best pub roast potatoes ever. The Golden Arches apple pie was the best ever. A real must to visit. Oh, the Devon Dream beer was exactly that, a definite 5 stars from my friends & I 🥰 …

Brilliant evening out, despite the kitchen problems.....
The staff are friendly, helpful and a real treasure that I hope the owner realises he has..... they handled an unexpected situation brilliantly..... we enjoyed everything so much we booked again for the following night but unfortunately it was cancelled as they were unable to do meals that night.
The food is amazing, completely different from the usual pub fare you expect.... although that is available too.
We will definitely be back to visit again

Lovely Devon village pub that does a range of tapas , it wasn't quite what we were expecting but there were some delightful dishes and the food was presented well and tasted great. Service was a little slow but hey it's high season and they were busy. Staff were attentive and polite. We'd go again.

Visited here with family and friends, we ordered the full 36 small plates off the menu. Absolutely delicious, there were 6 of us and not a lot was left. Compliments to the chefs, especially to the young kitchen staff and waiting staff, you all worked really hard on such a hot evening. Recommend sitting outside.

Cute little pub in the heart of Ruby country, with a lovely selection of beers and ales. Food looks interesting, so will definitely return for Devon tapas!

Food was nice but did,not realise you had to share for two. And quite a few made up a meal.which made it quite expensive. Would I go back again probably not
J. S.
Great starters and mains, the dessert (tart) wasn't great but maybe just steer clear of this as everything else was incredible! The two young waiters were rushed off their feet all evening so felt a bit sorry for them...but they tried their hardest and did a great job in the circumstances.

Lovely pub. You can really tell the owners have gone to tons of effort and care about the little touches here and there. Great prices and quality locally sourced food and proper beer. Apparently the ladies loos were so attractive they warranted photographing 🤣
This is the sort of pub, and being run by a young couple, that we need to cherish and hold on to!

Outstanding food and warm service. Driving home from Cornwall,I dreamed of a pub lunch outside in the sun with great local food and maybe a nearby river. After a brief stop at another pub nearby that was forlornly empty, the black River Inn was next on the Google list. Incredibly tasty food with a wonderful view of over the fields. The smell of the wood fire cooking the food was mouth watering. Worth a drive for sure
J. R.
Charming and modern. Very tasty locally sourced food cooked well. Plenty of options for vegetarians and meat eaters. Attentive, warm and helpful staff.
If not a tourist would make it a regular.

The pub has a great atmosphere and I loved the decor. Large garden area with great views. We attended the beer festival with live music and had a great evening

Great little pub, either for a meal, quick pint or a delicious cocktail.

Lovely traditional pub with friendly customers; the beer (recommended by one of the men standing at the bar) was fab but sadly we never seemed to be able to make a food night here - it sounded wonderful too. Next time perhaps.

Super, real country pub. The food was first class as was the service, even though ,the lovely landlady told us , they were runming short staffed!!
We had a seafood tapas selection which my wife and I shared!
All in all, we would most definitely return!!
A. C.
Fantastic food, knowledgeable staff and really good service levels. This is a gem of a place serving a unique range of pub tapas produced on an open wood fired grill. Highly recommended.

We had a table for four in the restaurant on Saturday night. The service was great and the menu is really different with tapas and more traditional favourites. The food was superb and a reasonable cost for the quality. I would highly recommend this pub, but leave a table free for us because we'll definitely be back soon. Thanks, Gary, Julie, Joe and Kelsey.

Lovely 3 meat Sunday lunch! Also had tapas which my son enjoyed so we are all going back on Friday so we can all have some. Great food, welcoming team and dog friendly... also generous chef!
Edited version to include our return on Friday night... so glad we booked again!
The tapas was delicious, we ordered loads because we were on holiday and what the heck?! Each dish was wonderful and we didn't leave anything on our plates. My son really wanted to try the mussels for the first time and wasn't disappointed, a new firm favourite now. Thanks to the team at B-R-I who made us so welcome... especially our son who got the thumbs up from the kitchen as he settled in again (always great to see the food prep).
Also loved the eco and sustainability message including the locally sourced produce. 5 stars doesn't do this one justice, would recommend booking to avoid missing out.

Located in a quaint Devon village, the Black River Inn is a lovely country pub/restaurant serving a small but exquisite selection of dishes. The staff are very friendly and welcoming and as locals, it rates as one of our favourites. Highly recommended.

We enjoyed the lovely british tapas so much and returning to sample some more
R. H.
Super small plates to share - cooked over a wood fire - nice garden too
J. P.
Traditional local pub, great food, ales and wines. Warm and cosy with lovely village atmosphere. Very helpful friendly staff. Carpark and beer garden. You'll need to book for a meal at weekends. Highly recommended.
A. I.
Lovely pub, great beer garden and great staff but on my visit the menu seemed to be aimed towards fish lovers with the only steak available ruined by something melting on top which made it greasy, a salad swimming in something watery (I did ask but got no reply) and a few chips. Sorry but for £21 it wasn't good enough. We would have complained but our friend paid the bill without us knowing as a treat. Can only say I won't be eating there again
J. P.
Lovely meal last night. Tapas choices excellent and plenty of food. Pretty garden with lots of tables and sun shade. Staff attentive and helpful. Will be back for more. We'll done!
A. W.
'Old style' pub with excellent food, drinks & service. Garden is a delight.

Nice pub very nice meal, interesting walk back to campsite. Suggest a cab!! Can't fault waitresses they were helpful, friendly and not all over you like a cheap suit. Never felt under pressure to either order quickly or that we had to leave in a certain time
L. C.
Walked here from a local campsite to find a beautiful pub with great atmosphere.
The food was fantastic and the service from the 2 girls was excellent.
Highly recommend if your in the area!
Excellent beer garden if you just wanna stop for a drink!

Decent food but slightly short on supplies. Only 1 whisky, small menu etc. Possibly tight times from covid.

Lovely pub, staff were friendly & thoughtful. Service was great. Food was delicious, and the Gin selection was substantial. They're also dog friendly which is excellent when there is such an eager customer as our doggo.

Expensive. Substandard poor quality and cheap tasting food. Had pork ribs tasted the same as I used to get from pappers takeaway torquay.
J. M.
Excellent, I have dined twice now at the black river Inn in a week. We went back second time as it was by far the best place to eat in the area.
C. M.
Superb meal, really enjoyed it. A very convivial atmosphere and friendly, welcoming staff.
S. T.
Really nice pub and nice food
S. S.
Really nice little pub with a snug style bar on one side and a nice eating area on the other. Also a function room in the back. Good range of local cask beers and ciders at a good price. Food more expensive but well worth the money. I enjoyed a poached trout and a venison wellington followed by a cheeseboard in which you have a selection of various cheeses from around the south of the UK
M. B.

We were spending the week nearby and opted to have our Saturday night meal here. I understand the place has recently been spruced up and the decor certainly feels fresh without losing he original character.
It’s an interesting place in that it is *the* village pub but it also wants to offer some finer food alongside the usual pub fare. I was certainly surprised to see Oysters for a starter on the specials menu along with Côte de boeuf for mains (designed to be shared between two). I opted for both as I love these dishes and it would be a test of the produce quality and of the cooking.
The oysters were nice enough but the real test was the beef and it passed with flying colours; tender, cooked to perfection (I asked for medium as a compromise with my wife and to my delight it arrived ever so slightly rarer). The meat was tender and tasted wonderful.
There were some nice desert options, the staff were friendly, the atmosphere had a nice buzz both from the dining room and the pub. The whole place had an informal but well turned out feel about it.
We had an enjoyable evening and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend others giving it a try.
