Reviews of The Fishermans Arms

Amazing little pub / restaurant hidden away between the marina and battery.
Good selection of beers and a quite phenomenal selections of whisky and spirits.
Lovely menu to choose from including menu for your dogs, curated by their resident k9 guru.
I gad the excellent king Prawns and roe on scallops, followed by the sea food gumbo, which was equally amazing.

Had my first meal at the pub with my partner. It was a lovely friendly pub with the staff pleasant and willing to help with anything you require. I had a lovely meal of chicken stack and sticky toffee pudding both of which was lovely to have. Sticky toffee pudding was to die for and you got plenty of it. Was a lovely evening. Drinks were lovely too and the price of the meal for two of us was really reasonable. The atmosphere was lovely and very Christmasy. The staff had to deal with a large group of loud men and they handled the situation very well. Would highly recommend.
J. H.
Lovely, dog friendly, pub tucked out of the way. The staff on my two visits have been excellent, very attentive without being annoying or pretentious.
The food is good and well presented, with a decent menu that is slightly biased towards local seafood. Also with dog options, from biscuits and treats through to full meals.
There is an extensive gin menu, with some very niche and unique flavours through to quality staples. Well worth a visit for that alone if you're interested in gin.
A great atmosphere and well run.

This was the first time my family and I had been to The Fishermans Arms, but it certainly won't be the last - we loved it.
The atmosphere and decor are warm, homely and inviting, the staff are welcoming, friendly and efficient, and the food is amazing. We had the Sunday roast, each of us choosing a different meat. All were cooked to perfection, the food was delicious and of a high quality, the portion size was perfect, and the price very reasonable. We all loved the gravy boat, 'cause some of us like very little gravy whilst others (me!) like our meals drowning in it.

A true hidden gem, I'd never heard of this until recently and now it's a firm favourite! The staff were lovely, food absolutely gorgeous and the decor is so cosy that I think jts a great place for dates, casual friend meetups, celebration meals...anything! Dog friendly too is always a bonus :)
B.
I’ve been waiting to come here for months but never had the chance or it’s been too busy to walk in. Definitely book in advance, the roast is popular and the food was good, I recommend the fish gumbo.
A. M.
went just for a drink and absolutely fell in love with the place! so adorable. it was completely booked for dinners on a wednesday night very impressive! we immediately booked a dinner after seeing everyone look so pleased with their meals (normal pub food, but has specials that vary)
a.
Food r serve a bit slow but taste good, portion is big.
Environment good.
Location not easy to find.
J. C.
My meal was fine, however a few issues with my wife's main course and dessert.
However, waiting staff were very apologetic and resolved the issue to our satisfaction.
Overall, massive portions for all 3 courses and good value for money.
We will go back and hopefully no problems next time.
T. H.
Good food, the Devon rock larger was one of the best largers I've ever had. Good steak and chips. My mate had fish and chips and no complaints. Off the beaten track but worth looking for.
I. S.
Brilliant! It absolutely is 'the country pub in the city'. Great selection of drinks, great menu, great ambience and very pleasant, attentive staff. Can't wait to go back!!!
C. D.
As soon as we walked in the door it was a special feeling. Very friendly and roast of the day had 4 meats for option. £12 a head felt a bit pricey but did enjoy the meal.
A definite return for further meals.
P. B.
Excellent food friendly staff and great service great value for money. Well done again Donna. Phil and Helen and Toby from Cheshire xx

I am so glad that we found this pub. My husband and I were looking for a place to have good pub food on our vacation and this place was amazing. We were greeted when we entered and they even managed to find us a seat even though they were booked. Our waitress was fantastic. She helped us pick out drinks giving great advice on local beverages. The seating was comfortable and quaint. The food was divinely delicious. There was no skimping and portion size here. There were so many options to choose from on the menu it was almost hard to make a decision. Not to mention the nightly specials. Even after all the food we ate we still managed to find room for one of their dessert. It was the perfect way to cap off an evening. If we come back to Plymouth again we're definitely going back to the Fishermans Arms.
L. P.
Quite possibly the best steak and ale pie I've ever had! Generously packed with tender meat in a rich rosemary gravy with pastry lid *and* base (a rarity these days!) The fish finger baguette was buttery and fresh and was a generous portion. The sausage and mash was exceptional, the gravy was fantastically rich and the accompanying veg were cooked to perfection. All this *and* friendly staff in a lovely coastal setting. A hidden gem in Plymouth!
P. H.
My wife and I was invited to a 70th birthday meal for 11 people in total, well the service was fantastic, the food was excellent quality too, we wouldn't hesitate to visit again when in Plymouth.
M.
Great evening over all, Food is excellent, well presented, good portions, even offer small plate for those who are not overly hungry. Only disappointment was the server did not let us know the kitchen had closed and deserts were no longer available.
L. R.
Very quaint staff friendly, not to busy but food slow to be served.tasty when it arrived and small portions were so big.!!!
D. G.

I thought California was the best place for a Caesar salad, but oh my god The Fisherman's Arms have taken this to a new level. Go there and try it. Lovely place, with lovely staff, Enjoy.
D. P.
This is such a gem of a pub. I've been visiting from Birmingham to see friends in the area for the last 6 years. I choose to celebrate my 60th Birthday with a meal and a few drinks in July. The food and service was first class. In the past I've had the Fisherman's famous Sunday Roast. Donna runs a friendly and welcoming place to eat, drink and relax. Five star quality.
O. S.
Fantastic service, staff are lovely. Food was gorgeous and we even got to order a meal for our puppy. Drinks were tasty and they had some lovely beers!

A big big thank you to the staff tonight who managed to find us a table, even though we hadn't book, and served with enthusiasm and helpfulness, a credit to the pub. The food was excellent, compliments to the chef, we had the seafood platter which was perfect, tasty and filling so make sure you leave some room for it. An excellent night out, great service and value. I would say that everyone should try The Fisherman's Arms but I will need a table there again soon, so don't 😉
D. F.
Nice friendly pub, fabulous selection of whiskies, and great selection of gins. Will definitely visit again... and have a Sunday roast as well.

Great pub with lovely food, beer and wine at a decent price. Really nice locally brewed ale for roughly £3.60 pint. Brilliant bar staff and waiters who gave us complementary drinks for a slight delay with our food. Would recommend but definitely book in advance
L. S.
This Pub is a gem in the heart of the barbican ♥️♥️♥️
On recommendation we waited a couple weeks to get a table for the highly anticipated Sunday roast and it didn't disappoint. Amazing food! Amazing service (Thankyou lesley) & the dog was even welcomed with a treat!! Highly recommended and we'll be back again.... (booking recommended)
Thankyou to the team @ Fisherman's arms for your hospitality and accommodation

A hidden gem , this was a real find on the way back to the car park after spending a delightful afternoon cruising on the Tamar. The staff were friendly the ambience lovely and the food gorgeous, daily special of "fire cracker yellow fin tuna " was amazing cooked to perfection ,well done everyone:)
s. t.
Nice atmosphere and the place is well set up but, the food seemed 'rushed', probably because it was so busy. Our meat platters had to be returned as some meats were undercooked.
A. T.
First time @ The Fisherman's Arms, highly recommended for great food and atmosphere
A. M.
A massive thanks to Donna and all the staff for making our daughters wedding so special on Saturday. The food was amazing and the staff so friendly and helpful it was out of this world

Love that it has good real ales and ciders in the bar. Great atmosphere and lovely friendly staff who couldn't be mere hospitable. Will definitely go again, couldn't fault anything about the place. Great to find somewhere that's still able to give the whole experience, Thank you.👍

Bleedy lovely. Fabulous Sunday lunch. Good service and nice ale. Shame they had run out of fruit crumble, but the cheesecake and lemon roulade were excellent substitutes. And the pub was busy with a lovely atmosphere.

Fantastic Sunday roast! Home made yorkys, loads of veg cooked perfectly, i had beef, my partner had turkey. One of the best sunday dinners ive ever had!
m. k.
Great place to have a drink .Staff very welcoming, great choices of alcohol frim all over the world. Definitely will be back highly recommended.
k.
The Owner and the rest of the team was very welcoming, Nothing was a problem in catering for an alteration in a dish to accommodate what can only be described as us being fussy customers. The food was not only accommodating it was a scrumptious as well, and extremely good value for money. The other customers in the pub were also pleasant and very friendly. After being recommended by a friend about how good the food was, I am delighted to finally have eaten here :)
M. K.
I went here with family for a Sunday roast, 3 different meats, which were absolutely perfectly cooked and presented. Came with all the usual veggies and even cauliflower cheese and loads of it in a separate dish.
It was nice and busy and the staff managed everyone perfectly too! A mix of bar and restaurant tables and no noticeable waiting times......... A really nice place!
Special mention of Clare........ I felt really looked after by her as she knows my family and nothing was to much to ask, considering how busy they were!
One of the best roasts I've had in a pub!
D. K.
Immaculate pub. Fantastic food. Friendly staff. Definitely at the top of my revisit list especially for special occasions.
s.
Gorgeous food, real gem of a place
P. C.
Cosy bar / restaurant.
Myself and my partner tried this place from a recommendation and we both enjoyed the food and service.
My only issue is the choices of sauces for the steaks as there is one, but once I requested one the chef happily whipped one up for us.
Both happy with the decision to dine here!
D. P.
Lovely gem of a pub, tucked away but well worth looking for.
Friendly and very helpful staff, lovely food, the fish and chips was lovely and fresh and the boys shared the meat platter which was huge!
And it's dog friendly, and even has a doggie menu! Bobby loved the sausage with veg.
4 tasty real ales, well kept.
It was well attended so booking was essential.
L. W.
Food was great, service was great, drinks were great, guinness was terrible.
I came here with 3 others, all left drunk and very full, I personally got the pie which was top class with quality meat.
G. D.
Beautifully decorated pub with great food. Minted lamb Patti is one of The best pub grump I've ever had. They even have dog treats on the menu. Our dog loved the peanut butter ice cream. Also games available.
J. C.
Went to the Fishermans Arms yesterday evening - Delicious Food!
A table of 6, quickly directed to our table, service was quick to attend to request drinks.
Drinks, starters, mains and deserts - All was quick to be served to the table.
Service was polite, friendly and helpful.
Second time being at the restaurant. Would recommend a visit.
J. K.
First time in Plymouth since 2002! Sussed out three/four pubs that looked to be worth a visit this certainly was - in Barbican area, smallish but really nice ambience, two or three real ales one their own, good choice lagers and ciders. Good and varied food menu. Friendly staff. Definitely worth a visit!
R. R.
Fantastic Sunday lunch. Lovely traditional pub with traditional Sunday lunch. Yorkshire puddings are amazing! Will definitely go again when next in the area
R. B.
Great pub in a great location with good selection of beers. Was not able to try the food (booked out and we hadn't booked) so settled for a few pints, some posh beer nuts (separated selections to enable allergic types to mix and match) with a few hands of giant Uno and a few games of snakes and ladders (classic!). Other board games available. Comfy chairs, good tables, good decor. Would go back again (for food, or just beer again).
H. V.
Wow what can I say fab staff and the food is amazing! Order for our anniversary and had it delivered as we are in lockdown!! The food was top quality and will definitely be coming to visit once we are allowed back out 🙂
S. L.
Incredible Sunday roast- little hidden gem!
J. B.
Recently visited for Sunday roast. Prior to lockown my wife and I and friends visited on several occasions as the Sunday roast was the best in town. Also had several evening meals there, in my opinion best fish and chips on the Barbican. So was really looking foward to revisiting after the refurbishment, but, unfortunately, was very disappointed with the standard of the roast. Both my wife and I had lamb as the meat choice, my meat was 50% fat, which should never had been served up, so I complained and was brought a side dish with some more meat. Which again I had to cut away the fat. Potatoes didn't taste as if they were freshly roasted, they tasted as if they had been sitting around for a while and then reheated. My wifes swede (turnip to some) was lumpy. It was definately not to the standard we were expecting, very disappointed. However, we will visit again hoping that this was just an off day. New decor is good, well done.
s. b.
What can I say lamb shank was to die for .
Barmaid was so cheerful and was very on the ball with orders and drinks .
Lovely place to visit .
I. T.
Great little hideaway, nice range of drinks. Very much a country pub feel, though stones throw from the sea.
M.
Very nice restaurant experience. Food was nicely done and not too expensive. The owner took care to accommodate people by moving tables around if necessary and knows her stuff when running a pub/restaurant. Cosy atmosphere and lighting. The Pub was in an unexpected location, but is worth a visit.
P. P.
We visited 2nd July and received a warm friendly welcome. The food was hot and flavoursome, and generally up to the standard of previous visits - tasty steak and ale pie (microwave carrot a disappointment). We had previously enjoyed excellent fresh fish, also lambs liver. We recommend all of these dishes along with the superb apple pie and a nice touch with the top-up coffee. Good value, will go again soon!
R. J.
Lovely pub, great food, great service. We booked ahead which was definitely a good thing as the pub is quite small. The menu was good and not over expensive there was even a menu for dogs. Loved everything about this pub and salute Claire and her team for the rum selection 😄
C.
Amazing, had a great night! Mr Jones is so cool. Thanks to all the wonder People there! See you soon
N. S.
Great menu and friendly service in a small family-owned pub in a 350-year old building. On Thanksgiving Day they offered an American style meal which we enjoyed very much. We will definitely return, hopefully soon and often.
C. B.
Fantastic food and service with a smile at this hidden little gem of a pub. Friendly and cosy ambience. Also serve a good selection of real ale. Dogs welcome, in fact they have a dog menu! Would probably advise booking a table in advance as it is a popular place.
L. S.
Brilliant pub and opening again from 2nd. In the meantime the Sunday takeaway roast has been a treat. The Christmas decorations and olde world feel will make anyone’s Christmas.
A. C.
Fantastic, great food and ale, staff are superb
J. T.
1st time here and what a lovely little pub Sat at the back where it was quiet people very friendly and love all the quote signs xx
B. P.
Great food. Dog friendly. Even do doggie meals. A-la Bark menu! Love it.
S. D.
Warm welcome, dog friendly lovely food highly recommended a must if you visit Plymouth.
Z. S.
Amazing! The food was so good and the people were lovely
J. R.
Fantastic place to visit so quaint, beautifully decorated, lovely food, staff great, lovely atmosphere a must place to visit.
E. H.
Took the family here for a meal and have been back many times since. The owners and staff are all warm, friendly and will go out of their way to make your visit as enjoyable as possible. The food is always cooked to a high standard and the range of available wines, beers and ciders is impressive. Whether popping in for a quick pint or a full blown meal The Fisherman's Arms for me has become a true home from home.
r. h.
Was nice but go down hill.
L. L.
What a lovely place for lunch. Food was really lovely too. Decor was excellent. Would highly recommend
M. S.
Brilliant food, reasonably priced, staff are great and cosy little place. One of the best steak and ale pies I have ever had, all fresh home cooked food. See you soon
A. M.
Probably the best pub on the barbican. Proper little hidden gem. Great food, Great service!! If you're new to the pub, you have to have a chilli vodka shot. It's tradition!!!
K. S.
Absolute hidden gem... fantastic, plentiful, reasonably priced food. Excellent selection of beers, wine and spirits. Combine this with friendly and efficient staff and the overall result is very good indeed. Highly recommended.
C. W.
A charming little pub with an open fire and centuries of history. Off the beaten track, welcoming dogs and humans alike. Delicious food and attentive but related service.
D. P.
Mothers day treat (not me the wife) Meal a fair wait but it was busy, so the landlord did not charge us for the prosecco. We did not ask for this but to me it showed commitment of the management to look after the customer. O'h, and the meal was excellent. Well done guys, see you Sunday.
L. M.
Great pub, great food, great staff. Fitted us in for a meal even though we hadn't booked. Will definitely be returning. Highly recommend this wonderful place.
P. E.
A very pleasant old pub focusing on food of a good standard at reasonable prices. Service was casual but warm and efficient. There is good reason why bookings have to be made well in advance!
B. J.
Good place to eat. Very busy so service was a bit slow and food not as good as it normally is. I got the impression from the staff that the chef was under a lot of pressure. I'm sure this was a one of as this pub is great for food and beer.
K. R.
Great food, great selection of drinks and very friendly staff
F. P.
Lovely cozy pub, tucked away from the main Barbican drag. All the staff from the barman to the waitresses were outstanding. The food is delicious and generous. No wonder is is busy!
A. T.
Overall I was disappointed with the restaurant. The good points are - very friendly and efficient staff, sparkling glasses and cutlery, nicely decorated restaurant and comfortable, we were given a taster of the wine that we had chosen. Now the bad points - very limited food and wine menu and VERY expensive, the green leaf stems in the prawn cocktail should have been cut off as the length made the food difficult to eat without making a mess, the wine glasses are far too large and heavy, small food portions. Food was enjoyed but the price we paid was far too expensive.
G. J.
A friendly busy location off the beaten track but very popular amongst locals, diners and others in the know.
Various changes over a number of years have resulted in this small local pub, just off lambay hill, close to the Barbican and the Citidel Barracks becoming well known for a range of value for money beverages and meals.
No longer a pretentious dining venue!
s.
Had the best Sunday carvery I have ever eaten , tasted superb and service was great
A. O.
Love this pub. One of best in Plymouth. Great ale, plenty of choice of other drinks. Open fire. Amazing food. And simply beautiful to be in a pub that feels like a pub. Not a bistro. Not a bar.
E. B.
Absolutely amazing food and portions, friendly staff and just such a relaxing atmosphere. Will be coming back many times in the future
D. J. B.
Good cosy pub with nice atmosphere, good drinks selection and decent food
S. S.
Went before the change of ownership and the food was superb. Couldn't get a table this time, so not sure how it is now. Lovely cosy pub though, and friendly staff, good beers.
S.
Great pub overlooking the Hoe and Plymouth Sound. Food here is excellent and good value for money.
There is no free parking close by so you have to factor that into your meal price.
Well worth a visit.
B. C.
Found this backstreet pub in the Barbican It is excellent with a good selection of real ales and food Very friendly staff welcoming to the solo traveller A genuine local
t. h.
A great little pub tucked out of the way. Food and service outstanding. Very friendly. Will be going back soon.
S. W.
Best pub in Plymouth. Food & staff are great
K. T.
Can't fault the food, the service or the Staff, we had a fantastic meal.
I think we may have to work our way through their menu in the new year, and all the different Gins xx
J. B.

One of my favourite places for great quality food. Always have amazing service with friendly staff. Food is always to a high standard and cooked fresh.

I had the cod in beer batter, mushy peas and chips, the fish was the freshest I have ever tasted which was caught locally - move over Rick Stein!
My daughter had the cheeseburger and fries, the burger was a double burger freshly made with salad in a brioche roll again delicious!
The staff were incredibly friendly, lovely and cosy rooms with an open fire.
Also dog friendly with a dogs own menu!
Tricky to find The Fisherman's Arms, so asked in the Tourist Information Centre. (The Fisherman's Arms is a short walk from the Tourist Centre at the Barbican)
We will definitely be returning on our next visit to Plymouth.
Thank you, again for the meal!

I went to the Fisherman's Arms today with my family. I had roast pork, my husband roast chicken and our children enjoyed a scampi and chips meal. All delicious. Non-pretentious, real pub. Great value, great atmosphere and I think all the tables were full (always a good sign). My husband said his beer was great (Tribute) and I enjoyed a rather nice glass of Sauvignon Blanc. We then popped down to the Barbican for a wander - it was a lovely Sunday roast day. Think we might do the Aquarium next Sunday, we will be back next Sunday!
