Reviews of The Tamar Inn
R. G.
Food was yummy, but maybe more of a choice would be great. Children friendly, clean and pretty premises and nice staff. Maybe a wee bit more expensive than expected, but still value more money. Great location.
E. F.
Such a friendly pub, bar staff were really accommodating in getting my terminally ill brother the drink he wanted. He was able to sit outside and enjoy the atmosphere and people watching.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
D. D.
Had a great Sunday roast all cooked just how I like it so that the vegetables don't jump off your plate.
I. C.
Just stopped off for a sandwich. Not a bad pub, very airy and clean.we all had the chapatti and tuna. Reasonably priced fare.
t. R.
Great welcome from the friendly barman. Good beer. Excellent food. Views of the viaduct and Taymar from the outside seating. Pricing very reasonable.
B. J.
Lovely pub and great food. I felt such a pain asking them to get rid of the lettuce (didn't state on the menu) from my tacos as it sets off my ibs and they were so polite about sorting it for me and I'm glad I didn't need to miss out on the cheese nacho sauce. I only remembered to take a pic halfway through it was so good!
S. K.
A lovely place close to the river. Sadly we were too late for lunch (they stop serving at 3 p.m.)
It was busy but service was good.
Enjoyed some drinks and pot of tea. Would love to visit when we can have some food there!
P. G.
Good local food, esp the mussels and fish and chips.
C. F.
Fabulous little place...very accommodating as we arrived in the pouring rain just as they finished serving lunch..but took our order anyway...lovely log burner..waitress was lovely and bar staff aswell..would highly recommend
K. S.
Great pub. I visited with a walking group 20+ for lunch. We pre-booked our meal choices. Food was very good, especially the Fish and Chips. All meals served up virtually at the same time.
V. E.
Really delicious meal for Sunday lunch. Lovely staff, meal was tasty, good size and really good value for money. The service slowed a little as it got busier, but was understandable. The venue has the most stunning backdrop of the river and the train viaduct. A definite win win, and we shall be back.
T. B.
Great food especially the chocolate orange brownie with chantilly cream great friendly atmosphere accepts dogs on leads great prices worth booking in advance for a table
M.
Fish and chips is the best! ❤️ Service was great. Second time we've been here and would certainly come again!
E. S.
Lovely food, lovely staff, lovely location. Definitely coming back again! P.s. best halloumi fries ever!!!
J. S.
Perfect fish and chips in a gorgeous riverside pub with great beers and lovely staff! Can’t wait to go back 🍻
K. W.
Absolutely fantastic, food was amazing, staff were fabulous, we were a large group and nothing was too much trouble! thank you so much! Beautiful views too highly recommend a visit!
M. B.
Absolutely delicious vegan food! The "fish" and chips was so good and I tried the "lamb" roast was superb!
Listened to Joanna Cooke live there too, beautiful day!
W. H.
Went here for lunch today. The food was very filling, the bacon was fantastic and the atmosphere is both calm and friendly. Very much approve of this place for lunch as the food is fresh and reasonably priced. Will definitely come back when I get the chance, ideal for lunch between adults and mature children during the day.
F. D.
It was quite nice, we all enjoyed our fish and chips. Nice views of the railway bridge as well.
K. E.
Lovly pub at the bottom of where we was staying in minons. The food was great defo the walk down to.
J. M.
Really nice location, seems to have become a really popular spot in the last few years since it was renovated. Good food, decent Vegan options, walkable from Harrowbarrow in good weather.
M. R.
Pretty riverside Inn - fairly big inside. Good choice of beers , food looked great. Calstock really good too, great atmosphere there.
P. B.
What a beautiful pub!! Was staying in the area and visited this establishment a couple of times. The first was bank holiday weekend and it was a gorgeous day and the pub was extremely busy. Managed to sit outside in the sunshine and the view is terrific! The staff there were also fabulous!
Revisited midweek when the weather was not so good and it was very quiet. Sat inside and had a lovely meal. Again the staff were wonderful and the beer was very good too!!
Will definitely be visiting again if I am in the area.
t. w.
Absolutely pack on Boxing Day. Great vibe and delicious cheesy chips.
M. H.
Very pleasant setting. Outside seating by the quay. Lovely food. Highly recommended.
J. C.
Unique, welcoming and comfortable. Menu limited but very well cooked, real ale/cider and excellent service - ordered fish and chips, steak and chips and baked cod all of which was absolutely delicious, my husband also recommends the burger! Lee and the rest of the staff made us welcome immediately and this was a recurrent theme during our weeks holiday in Calstock
H. H.
Room comfy and clean but what really made the place 5 star was the food especially the evening meals. Admittedly it was a relief as we were in the middle of nowhere so if we wanted a drink with our meal it was the only option. I was particularly taken by the crystal glasses used for fruit juice at breakfast and tall glass used for my gin, the good cutlery and linen serviettes. I made sure to thank the chef
P. H.
Good food friendly staff who made our dog's welcome.
Would visit again if in the area.
A. G.
Excellent pub. Visited several times & the food & drink was always spot on. Located in the heart of the village & close to the river, it is in a picturesque setting. Thoroughly recommended.
j. s.
Lovely old pub, good real ales and Cider available, we had the Tamar burger and ham, egg and chips, and both meals where excellent, very friendly staff, pub is dog friendly,
A. L.
Nice pub right in the Tamar River and worth a so if you're in Calstock. We kayaked up but unfortunately couldn't get lunch as we just missed serving time.
H. E.
Excellent Sunday roast 😋 very friendly. Good value, Also dog friendly .
J. E.
Lovely pub in an idyllic setting. Good selection of local beer & cider.
J. B.
Fantastic food, amazing staff and in a beautiful setting, will definitely visit again
D. F.
Great pub, good range of ales, fab Sunday lunch in a lovely spot and all for a decent price.
W.
Friendly staff, and a great pint. Food was brilliant and it was very busy. Hard pushed to find a parking space though so be warned
P. S.
Staff was very helpful and friendly. Just had drinks so can't comment on food, the main thing is the location. You have an excellent view of the viaduct.
P. C.
Great location by the river, good to see Doombar and Tribute on tap and good lunch menu. Service was super friendly, just had to sit there.
D. K.
Great pub ,very nice inside. Food and staff were lovely.
T.
Great pub, good beer, nice atmosphere and friendly staff and customers. Entertainment wise they have Poker and Backgammon nights if that's your thing. Really liked it here, can't wait to try the food.
s. b.
Excellent meal for our daughters birthday. Lovely staff who were very helpful.
S. J.
Beautiful location, travelled on train from plymouth for 4.40 return, cheaper then our local bus in to town! Located down on the waterside, fab to sit out on sunny day. Not alot on menu, though understand this in these extreme times and not knowing how many turn up in this quaint place. Food on offer excellent, had the beef in hpt roll with chips to die for and side salad. Friends had fish chips mushy peas which they enjoyed. Nice selection of larger and ale too.
L. G.
Lovely pub. Nice staff, great food, beautiful setting. Highly recommended.
B. K.
Great atmosphere, good vibes, just visit and enjoy!!
C. F.
Fabulous pub right on the tamar lovely food and staff
G. C.
Great menu, service, friendly staff and atmosphere. Food was good.
N.
Very tasty fish and chips, friendly barman and peaceful location for sitting outside. Will definitely be back!
L. C.
Nice pub on the river, outdoor seating etc but disappointed that there was lots of dog walkers and not one bowl of water for the dogs outside dispite asking if it was possible, apart from that seemed nice place
C. L.
Visited twice on our short break. Good food and friendly service.
H. D.
Such a little gem. We headed there via the Tamar Valley train during some poor weather whilst on holiday to fill some time for the kids and have some lunch and so pleased we did. Very welcoming, helpful and friendly staff, very good food, reasonable menu choice and fairly priced especially for the quality of the food! Dogs and kids welcomed. There is a park opposite so depending on where you sit you can enjoy a drink whilst keeping an eye. We ended up going back for an evening meal other time which was equally as good - we can highly recommend ☺️
J. E.
Old style inn limited menu service was good great views of the River Tamar
B. M.
Lovely walk with the dog from Cotehele to Calstock, with a pint at the Tamar Inn, then back again. Didn't eat but food looked great !
M. P.
Lovely place, friendly staff and delicious food.
L. F.
Great roast, and some live music for a Sunday afternoon
L. N.
A lovely and very popular spot next to the river. The service was friendly and very swift, and we both enjoyed our fish and chips. There were a few vegan options on the menu too which was great to see a mix to suit a range of people. Had a fair bit of outside seating (as of July 2021) too. The nearest car park is shared by a few spots though so it was a challenge to park even mid-week before school holidays so just worth keeping in mind!
p. s.
The Taymar in is right on the banks of the tidal River Taymar, serves good food, very Cornish
Cheers
J. C.
Fitted us in at the last minute. It was a lovely meal and the waitresses were helpful. Two of us had ham egg and chips, the chips are the best I've ever had, not sure how they create them as they're not the usual chip shape but a L shape. Hubby had a burger that didn't have multiple layers of lettuce, tomato etc that you get in most places these days.
Highly recommend but if you have breathing problems, don't sit near the wood burner. 👍👍👍👍👍
R. L.
Nice pub in a superb location to enjoy a Doom Bar.
L. G.
We've just returned home after having a lovely meal at The Tamar to celebrate my mother-in-laws 85th birthday. The staff were just perfect, efficient, attentive and very friendly - so lovely to see. The food was delicious, the service was second to none. What an absolute pleasure to visit. Although my mother-in-law is a local, we are not so this made our long trip from Birmingham worth while and we will definitely be visiting you again everytime we are visiting. Thank you. Xxx
C. P.
Really friendly pub. Right next to the river. Fantastic food and plenty of choice. Staff can't do enough for you. Dog friendly. We are localls and so we get to go all the time. It would be cheaper to join the social club but we really like it here.
M. F.
Not a huge menu to choose from as I only fancied something light. Chose the cheesy chips and side salad. The best cheesy chips I've ever had. Perfect lunch in a delightful location served by very attentive servers.
L. M.
Fab food, great setting, lovely staff.
L. B.
Lovely friendly place food good to. It also allows dogs
S. W.
I notice you still have your full evening menu on your website. I booked on the strength of that menu and when we got there the menu was much reduced. Whilst I understand that staff shortages are the reason for the change, maybe you should not leave the old menu up on your site when it's not the menu you offer ! Service was good. Stay safe
R. A.
Top Pub, great food and great selection of drink with really friendly staff. No problem accommodation 10 lads on the Tamar Train Line Pub Tour or a young family.
I. W.
Excellent food, great value, lovely local ales, stunning location, friendly staff - what more could you want from a meal out ?. Thoroughly recommend and will definitely be eating there again, shame we are only staying in Calstock for a week as it limits the amount of times we can go !
S. R.
This has to be one of the best located pubs in Cornwall, perfectly placed by the river Tamar this pub has everything going for it... Great selection of beers fantastic food and always a friendly and helpful staff. Recently refurbished it looks great and kept many of it's old world charms. Highly recommend
B. A.
Nearly went there but during my stay in the area there was a large funeral party one day and a huge birthday party the next evening. A popular pub with good food reviews and will try it on our next visit
I. M.
Calstock is fabulous and everything in it (maybe) the Tamar Inn is in Calstock and the staff, beer and building are pretty cool.
A. H.
Swallows overhead, river and ducks in front. Perfect place for a relaxing pint.
P. H.
Friendly staff, friendly locals, good food, good beer, and a lovely village. The viaduct is particularly great, make sure you turn up whilst it's there.
J. D.
Friendly service on a pleasant boat trip from Plymouth. Touch pricey but a worthwhile stop.
J. G.
After a lovely walk we called in for a swift half but decided to try the food, turns out it was a great decision, my Wife considers her fish and salad the best she has had in years my vegan burger and chips was simply superb 😀
H. S.
Lovely location, right by the river, nice little village pub
Sat outside, service was a bit slow and they mixed up our order so we didn't all eat together which was disappointing. Basic pub food, don't expect anything special.
G. F.
Have alot of regular music bands, great venue for live music. Views down the waterway to the viaduct are amazing.
Warm summer evenings on the green & great atmosphere.
J. L.
Small menu and quiet expensive. Situated in good position by Tamar River.
B. F.
Great food - fish was amazing - all cooked well and good portions. Nice selection of draught too. Only slight let down was cheap quality condiments but not enough of a detractor to warrant the dropping of a star
p. r.
First discovered this pub 20 odd years ago. In fact had my first pint of Doombar here, when it was only available in Cornwall. All the necessary Covid precautions taken efficiently, good menu choice, pleasant attentive staff, dining in or out, just across the road from the river. Another enjoyable visit.
B. C.
Been thinking about bringing the boat upriver with family and using the pub for lunch. Stopped here today (in the car) as an opportunity to see what it’s like. AMAZING is the answer. The food we had today was superb. The Tamar burger with cheese and bacon accompanied with chips and a small garnish salad with a sublime tomato relish. Everything was this meal was on point. One of the nicest lunches in a while. The service was perfect and the price was more than fair especially considering the quality of the food. All of this and a beautiful location!
Please don’t change a thing, at least until we come back on the boat for a family day out!!
THANK YOU!!!!
J. C.
Barman was really friendly and couldn't do enough for us (sorry, forgot your name, but you know who you are) he helped us move our outside table because it was raining. He was laughing and joking with us.
Highly recommended. Amstel was spot on.
T. K.
Great pub, with great food and a cracking pint of Korev. Nice views of the Tamar and the viaduct too
M. A.
This is an amazing spot for sitting outside by the River Tamar with an awesome view and a super chilled pint of lager.
C.
A great pub on the river Tamar in an idyllic setting. Delicious selection of food and drinks. You won't be disappointed.
S. F. H.

Lovely setting, an old favourite of mine and my walking friend,..courteous staff and very friendly,.. food was fabulous, reasonably priced for the area,.. and not a touristy rip off for us local folk!!..X
M. A.
It's a small place in a beautiful location, right on the river (on the other side of the astonishing bridge in the picture). The food is good, reasonably priced and comes in generous portions.
The staff are realaxed and efficient and do welcome dogs (all shapes and sizes, clean or muddy :-)
They are really impossible to fault.
R. W.
Great service and made really welcome.
S. D.
We stopped in here while we were out walking our dogs and had sandwiches and chips. We should of got one portion because two was to much. Sandwiches were nice too. The staff are very friendly and dogs warmly welcomed.
J. F.
We had a fantastic meal on Christmas day. Friendly, fantastic service. The amount of effort that went into the experience was great. Value for money outstanding. Can highly recommend.
J. A.
Lovely location & large garden area along the river but could do with some new benches, lots are broken ( not sure if they belong to pub or public benches). Park for little ones, everything close by. Good social distancing system. Well worth a visit.
s. s.
Good service and food. Reasonable prices to.
s. h.
Nice food and a pint outside sat in the sun. Friendly staff.
G. F.
Went for dinner, steak was really nicely done, just as asked. Barman friendly, entertaining of local.parking
R. B.
Doom bar on draught. Good food mainly deep fried fish, scamp & chips with everything but well crisper. Good for a holiday meal with a view of the railway viaduct.
C. S.
Dog friendly pub with plenty of seating. The pub is situated on the river front overlooking the bridge. We only had drinks here but had a varied selection of ales, lagers and wines.
R. W.
Nice friendly pub food served after six. Locally sourced food was delicious. Watched the rowing club practice on the river out side. Free carpark very close to the pub also nice view of the railway viaduct.
S. L.
The Tamar Inn is in a beautiful location, close to the river with fantastic views, esp the viaduct. With a children's playground close by and plenty of parking it's ideal for families. The pub has a friendly atmosphere and is always busy, with good selection of ales to choose from. Foodwise it's nothing special, usual pub fare but it is consistentlygood quality over several visits. Unfortunately the service is pretty poor and the menu is a bit pricey. Booking is advisable.
O.
Great atmosphere with calm but attentive staff. The food was also lovely and had good vegetarian or vegan options. All meat locally sourced and you can taste the difference. Nice restaurant area, bar area and outsoors area. Really kind to tourists :)
A. H.
An absolute pleasure. Staff was super attentive, polite and on it.
We visiting the area and out of our week here this was the best food we've had. I would definitely recommend the place.
m. c.
Gorgeous views sitting right by the river and the wonderful viaduct, and not forgetting the duck's and the geese. Lovely friendly pub.
C.
A beautiful location with great views of the viaduct.
P. C.
An absolutely fabulous ham, egg and cheese bacon chips. A plate full and I mean full of beautiful proper ham, crunchy chips covered in cheese and bacon bits and 2 perfectly cooked eggs. Dog was allowed and staff were friendly and helpful. Would recommend a trip here - lush xxxxxx
M. T.
Very friendly pub selling great local real ales, facing the river with nice outside seating and pleasant views. Well worth a visit
S. H.
Lovely pub in Calstock right by the river Tamar with the impressive viaduct imposing in view. Great food, beer and friendly attentive staff.

A beautifully situated older style pub on the banks of the Tamar river. Plenty of nearby parking and a outside seating area.Fine array of beers. Food is avaiable but we didn't partake. Delightful place to relax.

The only place serving food when we visited during lockdown. Food and service was great. Coupled with a good views and comfortable seating it was a lovely place to have dinner.
J. T.
Spent new years eve at the Tamar Inn & all our party had a fantastic time! It was very busy & had to wait a while to get our drinks at the bar but that was to be expected with the volume of people.
The band was amazing & had allmost everyone up danceing! All the staff were happy & friendly.
All in all a brilliant place & will be back.
J. B.
Lovely. Great food and service. Highly recommended x
R. T.
Well worth visiting. Catered helpfully & efficiently this evening, for our gang of 14 doing Tamar Rail Ale Trail. Scenic & peaceful location. Nice ales and food. Happily recommend this pub for both food & drink.
M. D. G.
What an absolutely delightful place to stop on the circular walk from Cotehele for lunch. Plenty of bar room and table space (both inside and out) with an awesome view of the viaduct. Friendly efficient but non-invasive service and I heartedly recommend the nachos :)
D. G.
Visited yesterday lunchtime, found it very well orgainised, with a track and trace system in place. Staff was friendly and very helpful. We enjoyed a wonderful lunch in a great location and will visit again soon.

Spent approx 4hrs here after arriving by train from Plymouth (£6 rtn) We came for Lunch but did not realise food stops at 2pm. Luckily we had asked about the lunch menu about 1330 and were told then. We both had the steak ciabatta with chips which was lovely and some of the best tasting chips we've had in a long time. The steak in the ciabatta was a bit too red but we enjoyed anyway.
W. D.
Beautiful setting, lovely pub with nice range of drinks and great value quality food
