Reviews of The Castle Inn
M. S.
Fantastic lunch at the Castle Inn. We kicked off with the pork burnt ends, very nice start! For mains, I had the whole seabass which was truly one of the best seabass I have ever had. Two others had the burgers which was also delicious. My daughter had the ribs which were falling off the bone, very good all round again!!!!

This pub Is so beautiful. It sits right in the countryside next to the bowls club and the church. I decided to stop at the pub as I was travelling through the village and wasn't disappointed. The staff were so friendly and I got a really warm welcome. I can't comment on the food as didn't have any food, but I had a flat white and sat out in the garden. It was a hot day and the scenery is so lovely. There was a pizza oven and bar in the garden and a play area for children. So, it's a kid friendly pub. Not sure about animals though. It's got quite a lot of tables outside and very well spaced out with umbrella's. It's a historic pub and inside is very well preserved and decorated so it has a cosy and welcoming feel when you go in. The toilets are well looked after and clean and the handwash smelt amazing. I will definitely be coming back to this pub as it was charming and it made me feel very welcome.
M. R.
Great historic building. Good food. It's mainly a place to eat these days and has options for private room hire. Friendly atmosphere and staff seem well trained and professional. Give it a go.
M. J.
Superb pub... large outdoor area out the back with pizza oven, and snuggly log fire inside during the colder months.
Great food and relaxed atmosphere in an olde worlde pub.
S. C.
Great food... Friendly service. Nice little slightly out of the way pub with a good quality menu and really friendly staff
C. C.
Came to taste the new menu and as always it was superb! Still the best pub food in Berkshire! Great staff, atmosphere and food!
R. G.
My Daughter and I visited the Castle Inn for a joint birthday celebration. The staff are very friendly and the food was delicious (the ribs were the best I've had) and the childrens menu is great.
When finished our meal, we were told that they had something special for us, the gentleman serving us then bought out a lovely chocolate brownie dessert with Happy Birthday written on the plate! This was a lovely touch and really made our visit so special. We will absolutely be back again!
S. B.
Superb. Beautiful warm environment, great service, and the gnocchi was borderline perfection. Will definitely be back
G. G.
A quiet very old village pub next to a bowling green. Good selection of beers, and other beverages. Nice pub food. Attentive staff..
S. P.
Really lovely old pub with some great history behind it. Food was great. Service was great. Everyone so friendly . Would love to go back
S. W.
Lovely local pub with an open fire, good pub food and welcoming staff
E. P.
Returned to The Castle Inn after many many years and found the atmosphere very nice indeed. The staff were very helpful and attentive. The food was plentiful and reasonable value for money. The Sunday roast was good and the stroganoff was okay as well. Would I return: yes I would to select from the varied menu.
C. S.
Really lovely, historic country pub. Highly recommend it. Friendly, attentive staff and great food. Thanks for a great evening!
N. M.
Fabulous Sunday lunch, how they get the roast potatoes so crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside?
Never had a bad meal at the Castle.
K. R.
I love this pub been going to it for years recently renovated and looks better than ever great food loads of variety and a plethora of drinks from local ales to stand alone classics. Must try if your ever in the area.
G. R.
Lovely part of Hurst opposite St Nicholas Church. Nice selection on beers and wines on offer.
M. S.
Good service, good food and nice choice of ale. At the time I was there it was quite quiet and lacked atmosphere, I am sure this would be better in busier times. Overall enjoyed it very much and will be back.
B. K.
Absolutely delicious food, every dish was fresh and well cooked.
The nicest we have had since we have been able to eat out again after lockdown.
The staff were very friendly and attentive.
J.
Brilliant food, and the owner and chef couldnt have been more welcoming.
The burger is reason to visit alone. Great little gem. Now makes their own sausages on site and are probably the best you'll find in a pub in the UK.
O. H.
Beautiful, historic building pub with delicious food and great service. Also has a very community feel as there was a local bonfire and carol singing when we were there.
C. D.
This place is worth a visit. It felt relaxed and safe during uncertain times. The food was lovely (we had pizza, which was luscious!) the service is friendly and accommodating, give it a try this pub makes the effort and it shows. Thank you x
S. S.
Stunning old pub with friendly efficient staff. Menu is dominated by pizza but there are other options. A little more expensive than the average pub. Chocolate pudding was very good
N. Y.
The selection of ales has improved significantly. The driveway to the car park still needs resurfacing to make it safe to walk and dance on.
S. D.
Just stopped for a quick drink. Outside seating in the beer garden was a bit too child friendly with a large football goal but luckily there were no children around. Seating overlooking the bowling green had the sounds and smells of the kitchen - pity any poor bowlers trying to concentrate...
K. C.
Stopped here during our bike ride for a drink. Ended up having a Pizza from the cool pizza oven they have in the garden and that ended up being the best pizza we have ever had! Loved our visit and can’t wait to go back. Good job !!
M. M.
Love this little country pub. Just found it driving past and popped in for a quick pint. Will come back and maybe try the food as well. ❤️
O. J.
Came here on a weeknight. Menu is smaller at the moment due to Covid (I assume) but everything we had was amazing - especially the burger! The pub itself is lovely and cosy inside, and service was great.
L. G.
Beautiful old pub, great food.
G. W.
Classic cosy country pub. Warm and welcoming if a little dimly lit. Friendly and attentive bar staff serving a fairly good selection of beers on tap. Well selected and fairly-priced wine menu. Food menu a couple of pounds more than expected for the rural location, however can’t comment on the quality of the dishes.
K. W.
Fantastic venue, the food is great plus Helen and Matt are wonderful hosts. We've been holding our breakfast meetings here every Thursday morning at 6:30 am for the past year and it has been a lovely welcoming experience. We also had our Christmas party at The Castle Inn and the food was excellent then too.
K. M.
Great and constantly updating range of real ales which normally include some local ones.
Updated Dec 2013: Back again for a family meal. The Castle never disappoints. Great food, fantastic beer and attentive staff. This place still deserves the 5 stars originally awarded.
Update May 2018: Bank Holiday Beer and Gin festival. Great beer, some fantastic find, and a barbecue. What's not to like?
H. J.
Visited lunch time today. I would advise booking, as it gets busy. Lovely traditional pub. The menu offered was not the same as the web site. (No duck/squid on light bites). Food chosen lovely but a fair wait considering we got there nearly first and ordered no main courses. Poor man appeared to be taking orders, serving & doing the bar too. Web site needs updating too. Still, well worth it.
R. A.
Called in for a pint. Lovely pub, great Guinness and staff helpful and polite.
s. e.
Lovely place and very nice meal
S. G.
Lovely place for Sunday lunch with friendly staff and good food. Slightly lower rating because I ordered my meal without cheese and then it still came with cheese. Had to wait for replacement which was frustrating as everyone else had finished eating but the food was tasty nonetheless. Service was a little slow but worth the wait.
M. M.
Had a lovely Sunday lunch here. Staff were lovely and they had a nice range of Ales. Some taxidermy on the walls. Didn't bother us but for some it might
M. T.
Some unusual dishes in a varied and well structured menu, well cooked and presented. I highly recommend the venison meatballs.
Good choice of drinks and friendly and relaxed service from smart and chatty staff.
Attractive and unspoilt building and interior with traditional furnishings but the 'gents' deserves a deep clean.
D. P.
Stopped by here on the 3rd July, purely by chance, I was in Winnersh and the pub I originally planned to visit was closed. When I arrived here it was fairly quiet and I didn't have to search for a parking space.
When I walked in there were a few people at the bar, all dressed formally, so you can imagine my thoughts as I strolled in in just shorts and a t-shirt. However the other people there were very friendly, stopped for a chat and made me feel really welcome, the bartender was very pleasant with a welcoming smile.
The selection of drinks, although smaller than some pubs, was still more than enough choice for me, with a few ales, lagers and even cider on tap. As well as a wine list on the bar itself. (I'm sure there are more available, these are all that I spotted on my occasional trips inside)
I ended up sat outside as it was a nice evening, and the location is amazing, although it's right on the road it's a very quiet road and right opposite is an amazing little church, with stained glass windows and gargoyles on the bell tower.
Overall I'm very happy with the way I was treated by the staff and the other patrons at this pub and would highly recommend this place to anyone wanting a quiet drink in a nice pub.
G. H.
This is what I'd call a 'proper' pub, traditional in decor, a few different rooms to sit in, with outside tables and rear garden. Staff very friendly and polite. There were a couple of decent cask ales available, eg Hophead - although I wasn't able to sample one.
We were there for Sunday Lunch, it seems a pretty popular place so maybe worth reserving a table in advance as not a huge number of tables inside. As it was fairly busy it took nearly an hour for the food to be served, they did apologise for the wait, but not great as we had children with us. They have a supply of old chess boards and domino sets so that occupied them a bit.
The food and portions were pretty good. We had a couple of mixed roasts - pork very nice and beef cooked well but not the best cut. Veg and potatoes all very good, seemed freshly cooked. As I'm a Yorkshireman a good Yorkshire pudding is a must, these were definitely large, but crispy throughout. Also ordered the Sea Trout, again, this was cooked well and tasted delicious. We ordered a mix of desserts, all very tasty and we'll presented.
All in all, we had a good experience here and we'd go again. We had plenty of chance to chat with friends whilst waiting, there was no rush to get rid of us despite being busy.

Dropped in for a pint one evening and bumped into some very good friends who recommended dining there so went the following week and had a delicious dinner and very good service. Had lunch there last Saturday and it was superb value. Great home-made food at good prices with excellent service again.
A. B.
Good food and really friendly.
S. C.
A group of us went to the Castle for Christmas lunch. The sous vide pheasant I had was excellent. In addition, there were plenty of vegetables supplied, and the Christmas pudding & custard dessert was very good.
J. C.
Wow. Such a lovely pub, with a great selection of drinks and delicious food. Staff very helpful and friendly, well worth a visit. I highly recommend the burger or ribs... such a treat.
S. D.
The 5 stars is relative to each pub I know on the area. The Castle Inn has a great grown up village atmosphere, good beers, more r nice food and friendly service.

Sunday roast was epic. Best we have had for a long time. Big Yorkie puds. Super crunchy crackling. Excellent seasoning. Just yum
S. M.
Snuck in here for a pint and to read a book on a quiet Saturday afternoon as the lunch crowd left. There's a few nice spots by the fire to settle in for the afternoon. The staff were friendly and the ales were good. Didn't eat, but the food looked great.
R. S.
