Reviews of The Greyfriar
J. W.
Good to see an Untappd verified venue and to be able to see the beer options in advance. Helpful staff, laid-back atmosphere and quite busy for early evening. Would recommend, well balanced selection of beer styles and some interesting options.
C. W.
A decent craft beer pub with a tidy selection of cask, draught and bottled and it's close to the station. The pub dog is lovely as well. They could do with having a pricing board up for the beer like a lot of craft beer places do. Prices for 1/3 1/2 2/3 and a pint. £8 for a pint of sub 5% pale ale was a surprise.
I. K.
This is a great pub.
I have only been in a few times but it has the feel of a local about it.
Great beer served by friendly staff.
It is also very close to Reading station
N. C.
Staff were very friendly, but the place itself seems quite dark and gloomy if I'm honest. Prices aren't great, but depends what you want. I paid £15 for TWO IPA's. Very over the top if I'm honest. It's an okay place, but ask prices before you get stung like I did. The way I look at it, for £7.50 per pint of that specific brand/drink, it'll probably be cheaper in London...
R. A.
Nice pub with a good selection of beers. Board and card games also on offer which is a nice touch. Don't know/didn't order food so can't comment on that.
R. P.
A quiet pub, but with a decent selection of beers. It's been quite empty every time I've been there so if you like the pub for its "buzz", then maybe not the place for you, but if you're in it for the beers, you'll likely be very happy with The Greyfriar
A. L.
Great pub, just down road from station. Great selection of real ale, gins and whiskies. Friendly, helpful staff.
T. P.
Not been in since the days of the rather seedy 'Railway Arms/Tavern ?' - can see the appeal nice bright layout - lots of choice on draught incl local brews double barrel/Ascot etc - friendly staff but was a v quiet night - most people staying in due to 'Eunice'?
Can see why my sons like it....
... was on the fringes of being a bit pricey e.g. £10 for 2 pints but I'm assured the nearby 3 Guineas is more expensive?
C. C.
Had a lovely time playing a few pub card games and drinking tequilas, a little expensive but overall has a nice atmosphere. Could do with a few more sofas to relax on but there is a couple in one corner. Will come again :)
M. B.
Great pub with a vibrant atmosphere. Is particularly good for interesting beers and has a great gin selection. Really well located near the station too. Would recommend.
J. G.
Beautifully appointed pub, lovely ales and decent seating. Very handy for station too.
G. D.
A decent range of craft beers in cask and keg. Handy location for the train station
D. L.
Great old fashioned pub.
No food but good beer and friendly staff.
Very welcoming.
R. C.
Solid pub that survived lockdown and is still a nice place to drink. It's about as central to Reading as you could want and on a reasonably busy road, so bear that in mind.
No complaints, but a little more seating would be appreciated, there's always a lack of chairs! :)
E. S.
Great traditional pub where you can get proper Ales and good atmosphere. Nothing else needed.
K. K.
Used to be a great Reading pub, very convenient for those using Reading train station, and it's also close to the town centre. However, the number and choice of cask beers they keep has now reduced quite considerably. It's still ok, but not as good as it used to be.
g.
A great range of beers, close to the station makes it an ideal watering hole when going to from the Rail Station.
d. h.
Amazing selection of beers and a very cute pub dog.
N. F.
A small, friendly pub with both indoor and outdoor seating, and most importantly a good beer selection (available on Untappd). Pleasantly quiet while still feeling lively, and a delightful absence of loud music and big TVs.
J. S.
The best pub by far within the radius of central Reading and the station. Almost European in feel, friendly and relaxed. An excellent mix of beers whether you fancy ale, craft beer, Trappist bottles or lager.
A. D.
Great selection of real ales , not far from the station , well worth a visit , nice and relaxing atmosphere
C. S.
Good pub in close to town centre and to the station. Great selection of real ales. Good meeting point. Staff really friendly and dogs are allowed.
A. P.
Always a fantastic selection of beer on cask and keg. Tori, Tanya & team are so welcoming too. Come out of the train station and turn right down the steps to discover this little gem.
J. W.
The Greyfriar sets the standard for pubs serving unique beer in Reading. They have rotating kegs that often complement or contrast their selection of local beers.
With a pleasant, polite and engaged atmosphere paired with the fantastic decor the Greyfriar is a pub you shouldn't miss.
S. B.
Great Pub, nice selection of beers, a fine independent pub
S.
Best pub for pre or post train drinking. Excellent range of ales.
T. E.
What a lovely place , popped in to "work from the pub" was treated so well staff happy to serve , lovely selection of ales lagers and Belgium not a big gun drinker but great range. Finished my trip with a coffee and was excellent would recommend for the business man on the move any time. Fax machine also avaible ++
B. D.
Superb pub, very busy, though not a big delay getting served. There was a large range of beers. We struggled to find space to stand, let one sit, and this was a Tuesday night (Reading playing may have contributed). Very good atmosphere, we had a good couple of hours there.
H. T.
Easily the best pub in Reading by a mile. Serves good beer well, that's what a pub should do, surely? Excellent, efficient, friendly staff who actually listen to customers. Nice, friendly atmosphere. Good for beer bores, lager boys and gin lovers alike. In the town centre close the station but just out of the way enough to be chilled. Excellent meeting spot with good Wifi too.
Go to this pub and drink their beer.
J. D.
Lovely real ale pub close to the station.
A. P.
Always some interesting real ales on offer here
O. C.
Love this pub, great selection and friendly staff
R. B.
One of the best real ale pubs in Reading. There are usually 5 or 6 real ales available and often one will be a stout or porter. Seating ranges from comfy sofas to slightly less comfy bar stools. Limited food - mainly a beer pub. Watch out for the steps by the door as you enter or leave - especially as you leave after a couple of pints!
G. H.
A comfy, cozy pub right in the middle of town but with the feel of quiet local.
Only moments away from the train station and the main high street, the small pub packs a lot of atmosphere. The lots of cozy seating it's a great place to catch up with friends, with it never getting too loud or hetic to chat.
A wide variety of drinks available at very reasonable prices, it's a great place to stop off in!
T. W.
A very nice and relaxing pub with a good atmosphere. Sells a selection of real ales. Definitely worth a visit.
K. W.
Good pub in central Reading close to the station. Constantly changing selection of well-kept ales to suit traditional and craft beer tastes. Fairly young clientele. Good atmosphere.
R. D.
Great little place to enjoy a beer, lots of interesting options from local brewers too. Will definitely be back!
R. B.
This is a real hidden gem of reading. Super close to the station, fantastic selection of real ales and other drinks with warm, friendly and attentive staff. Highly recommended!
M. R.
Have been here several times. The place has an excellent, varied and regularly updated selection of ales, including local breweries.
They also have an extensive selection of gins with suggested pairings of tonics and garnishes.
Also available are some board games, Sttlers of Cavan, chess, draughts, Avalon and a few others.
Nice place for a quiet evening drink- it's never been absolutely packed but equally there have always been enough people there to give it some atmosphere. Give it a try!
A. C.
Traditional yet modern pub serving a great selection of real ale. Good "sarnie & a pint" lunchtime deal and good service from friendly staff. They always play good music whenever I'm there too, which brings it up to 5 stars
L. H.
Fantastic pub!! Always feel welcome in here. Huge selection available, 22 pumps (no duplicates) more gins than I can count and loads of whiskies!! Well worth a visit!
E. H.
Amazing selection of different gins and beers, great if you want to try something new. Staff are friendly, and decoration, music, and general atmosphere is relaxed and enjoyable. Since it's a bit out of the way of the rest of town, it's never usually too busy, so you can find a chair and get served quickly.
E. T.
I always liked the Greyfriar. After renovation the new owners have turned it into a Traditional Ale and Gin pub. They usually have at least a few hogs back brewery real ales on as well as a cider or two and more mainstream drinks as well.
It is often packed and has a great atmosphere and if you can grab them comfy leather seats or a place at the bar. They also offer a small food selection. My only gripe is the price is a bit higher than other places around but they seem to be aim for a more "up market" feel to the place and quality of the and selection of beers and drinks more than make up for it.
N. W.
This is a lovely pub not far from Reading Station! It has a great range of real ale, does food and the staff are quick and friendly! We went Saturday night and it was busy but the staff coped!
I. L.
A great revitalised pub close to Reading statieith a goid range if ales and other beers. Our go to place if we do not have long between train connections and way better for price and beer quality than the bar in the old station building
R. D.
Good range of beer every close to Readingvtrain station and a small selection of sandwiches and bar snacks. Bar has a range a games darts etc. Seems like a nice place for a drink
N. A.
One not to miss if you enjoy trying different and new beers. Plus an extensive gin list to delight the other trendies.
Relaxing place with a lived in local feel with some big tables for groups.
B.
Probably my first choice for a good pub close to the station, this should definitely be a commuter's first choice if you have time to kill waiting for trains.
By comparison with other pubs close to the station that I've spent a lot of time in, the Grey Friars is FAR cheaper than the Oakford (lunch with a beer here costs £6.95, compared to almost £20 at the Oakford) while being just as close to the transport links, and still has a great selection of drinks.
M. K.
Good beer before catching train home
D. W.
One of the best pubs in Reading. Fabulous range of real ales and craft beers on tap. Very friendly welcome. Go give it a try!
A. M.
Amazing food for incredible value, my colleagues had cheesy Sandwiches and my vegan breakfast was demolished in no time! I could barely believe the price! Thanks also to the lovely staff! :) Highly recommend!
S.
Nice pub, with a relaxed atmosphere just down from Reading train station. I like that it serves real ales. You will also see a selection of fans awaiting transfer to matches generally the older wiser crowd.
M.
Great friendly staff and welcoming atmosphere, good beer selection both on tab and in the fridge that are reasonably priced. small outdoor area near the main road, reasonably spacious inside but can become a little stifling in warm weather.
M. S.
Always a positive experience. Very close to Reading main station. Always has a great selection of ales. One of my favourite pubs in Reading.
D. “. K.

N. T.
Excellent venue, very close to the station. Great selection of ales and gin with good lunchtime food. Pub quiz is excellent and very much needed on a Monday.
M.
Great for avoiding mainstream big standard beers. No carlsberg, Carling, fosters or stella. Dart board, good beers, clean lavvies, solid gin and spirits selection. Winner 🤙
S. B.
Nice corner pub without the range of mainstream bitters, lagers or ciders. Good, challenging pub quiz every other Monday. Very limited food offering.
D. S.
Revamped pub after a few years changing hands. Serves a good selection of ales n stout. Big selection of Gin to choose from their Gin Menu.
M. S.
Brilliant ever changing variety of beers, friendly staff and punters. Only down side is the sound - too many flat hard surfaces can make it unpleasantly noisy. Ah but the beer...
S. B.
Great pub to hang out with a small group of friends. Quite cozy, and you won't have to yell to be part of the conversation. Great selection of gins
L. S.
