Reviews of The Purple Turtle

My favourite club in reading. Great if you want an exciting night out, or just a quiet night chilling outside on the heated seats. Staff are friendly and helpful and the management seem to have a nice and welcoming approach to the operation from what I've seen. Nice variety and quality of drinks, and nice variety of spaces and music with lots of character, and an overall great atmosphere.
M. C.
This Pub/Bar has been a favorite of mine for well over 12years, as soon as i could drink i was in here having the world of fun with friends. really good mixed music from many different genres and with a good drink selection. outdoor area is awesome in any weather and kept tidy. also Readings only late night venue.
R. M.
Best bar in Reading! Have been to the Purple Turtle many times over the years and just love the atmosphere there.
Have also been lucky enough to see a few bands there recently. It’s a fantastic venue and hope to see more there soon!

My favourite ❤ in Reading during the week. Extremely busy during the weekend. Prices are not too bad. Great staffs.
Be careful with some female bouncers over there. You get banned (Expecially females)for literally nothing if they don't like you.
I wish managers over there should actually investigate before standing for some decisions making by these bouncers.
Overall, great venue depending of your tast of music.

Had a really fantastic evening during the Eurovision event. Met some amazing people. Lovely place, Fantastic atmosphere. Love the outside balcony area. Truly had an amazing evening

What a place Turtle is. Go here almost every weekend and always have the best time. Friendliest staff you'll meet, especially my man Rich. Watch out for Reggie on a Fri/Sat night in the dungeon; he pumps out the belters and good vibes. Many good times had here and many more to come!

Really enjoyed this pub when I visited my friend in Reading back in 2017. People were friendly all around, from the staff to other customers. Also enjoyed the decor (the Shining wall art, which I attached as a photo, is a nice touch).
B. C.
Late night bar with a good outside area. drinks are reasonably priced with music inside. The outside has lots of heaters if a bit cold.
O. F. L.
Amazing venue, it had a great little stage setup to see live bands and once you go outside there is a huge decking on a few floors with table football and outside bars. There is also a dance club in the cellar with a Gothic theme which is different but it's really well done. I recommend it a lot, I just wish I lived closer.

I really like this place.
Open late.
Excellent outside area.
Upstairs plays rock and cheese etc at weekends.
Downstairs is drum and bass I guess - not my type of music so might be wrong about that.
Generally friendly staff.
Bouncers are the right level of letting people have fun, but strict when they need to be.
Good range of booze.
So - why have I dropped it one star, it sounds great....
Well - it may have been a simple error, but one of the members of bar staff last night added a tip on to my card payment without asking my permission.
Usually you get the option to add a tip or not on the card machines.
I don't know whether this was a genuine mistake or he simply thought I wouldn't notice.
I'd recommend the management remind their staff that this is fraud and potentially theft.
Great bar, but that happening last night just put a bit of a sour taste..
M. R.
Amazing pub, staff can't do enough for you. Good selection of beers. Whilst Reading Festival is on, this is the place to come when the music ends! Garden cosy.
E. C.
Amazing choice of spirits, and unusual alcohols. Gorgeous tasting cocktails, and cocktail shots. Adorable friendly staff. Live music. Awesome multi leveled beer garden, with out door bar, shisha, fußball table , decked areas, overlooking river. Cool decor with drumkits as lights. Huge outdoor tv. Wasnt too busy but had good warm vibe.
S. R.
Clean place, friendly staff. Gets really busy late night as its very popular in the area. Worth a visit

Security lady no. 87 is amazing she so friendly and caring while doing an amazing job of keeping people safe, deserves a pay rise if you ask me 😉
G. G.
Good drinks, nice atmosphere, and great rock music. By far the best place in Reading.
P. W.
Great venue to see local bands. Would be improved by better lighting on the performance area.
F.
Had many a good night here, great decor nd fit bar staff with nuclear Djs, what's not to love?
G. D.
Always a good atmosphere and some good draught beers. Good for late night drinks
J. B.
I love this place. It's one of the staples of Reading. Most good nights end up here
A. K.
LGBT+ friendly venue with a great atmosphere. The music is amazing and the drinks are great too, plus there's the outdoor space for those warmer evenings or when it gets too crowded indoors. Staff are mostly friendly, but a few of them could definitely do with less of a negative attitude towards visitors.
D. (.
A crazy style bar but plenty of space to relax and enjoy music and a drink
B. D.
Lovely outdoor seating and great lay out too. More than enough bars to get served and good service provided. Music on offer was top notch and reminded me of the Pink Toothbrush in Essex. Fantastic!
J. H.
I had a fantastic time at the venue. The music was great and I will definitely be returning again. 5 stars.
j. m.
The most Unique outside space on several levels open and covered.
With heated Dragon Benches.
Bar staff extremely accommodating,
I didn't want the first Guinness of the day out of line and they understood this and were terrific.
Highly appreciate staff , and a brilliant environment.
10/10

Gemma is one of the best bar staff I have come
across in a long time.
A. B.
Loved grabbing a drink here the night before I flew back home to the States. It was quiet since it was a Sunday night but it had a good atmosphere and I love the way the place is decorated.
P. G.
Banging venue, entertainment world class, bar and door staff super accommodating
L. M.
Hands down my favourite bar in Reading. I've been going there for 20 years and despite the amazing refurb a few ago, it still retains all the character of it's past. Staff are professional. All walks of life congregate without issues and the door staff are on the ball to quickly remedy any issues with people who fancy a fight. I have always loved the turtle and it has always been my number 1 recommendation for anyone who fancies a late drink or a late night.
i. j.
Really nice atmosphere at Wednesday evening , BBC introducing Amra Ray, @ l music and other acts . Friendly crowd and easy to talk to people. Staff bit on sulking side but that didn't spoil the night . Amazing decor and awesome space outside . Very funky and clean toilets . Definitely recommend to stop by and support the music acts .
K. T.
Good place to go drinking and watch football on the big screen in the garden
E. M.
Came in on a Thursday night for a few late drinks after dinner. Very impressed! Doorstaff were friendly and polite and the bar staff were the same. Ordering via the qtap app worked well and the tables were all perfectly to allow for social distancing both inside and out. Only downside is I wish it was open later! We were having such a good evening we didn’t want to leave at 1am! We’ll definitely be back.
M. L.
The place is like Narnia, much more to it than meets the eye. It looks fantastic, with three or four different areas each with a distinctive style. It's practically unique as far as I can tell. Any place whose wallpaper features The Cramps and Buzzcocks has to be good.
A. V.
Great rock music atmosphere and very friendly staff.👌
A. R.
This place is sick, the layout of the whole Bar is very different. Even without drinking you can just enjoy the aesthetics and be happy. Outside area is swell aswell looks like a beach. Pretty sure it's open till quite late compared to the other bars in the area which is sweet. Drinks menu was a bit sparse but not sure if that's due to covid but nonetheless fantastic place to be!
S. K.
Party Place.... Nice music... Reasonable in price... Free entry..... Late till early morning...
D. P.
Nice and quite big place ! A lot of people so you will wait a bit to order some drinks. The outside is really nice and cozy.
K. R.
Even a double decker bus hitting me and throwing me 20ft across the ground wouldn't deter me to visit this bar!
W. B.
Absolutely iconic for Reading. Never a bad night out.
P. T.
Bang on. Always plenty of different people in great atmosphere
A.
This is an absolutely bizarre bar over multiple levels including outdoor, with an eclectic crowd and mix of music. Great bar to people watch with a great selection of beer.
K. S.
The purple turtle is a Reading must. A right of passage to anyone that lives hear, with a healthy mix of rockers, business men, teens and drum and bass devotees some hownit just works?
Iv been going to the turtle since I was a teen, my most recent visit being to take some work colleagues after a Christmas meal and they totally enjoyed it. There have been a lot of changes over the years. The most recent being the Shisha area balcony and tiki type garden. An absolute must when visiting Reading.
B.
Great little place, much bigger on the inside than expected, very freindly staff and the atmosphere is great
A. J. H.
Awesome... Decore totally rocks.. Staff friendly...love the way it's set out into different areas.
C. G.
Had many a great night here!
I've had a couple of issues with the bartenders over the years, but nothing too crazy. I ordered a gin and tonic with a lime, they took that as lime cordial instead of an actual lime. I said no I meant an actual slice of lime, to which the response was 'too late mate, that's what you asked for'. I understand if it was a busy night and I was drunk, but it was 4pm in an empty club, most places would just replace it, but I ended up paying double.
V. B.
I preferred it before that refit but I'm old school. It felt nice sitting in a bar listening to rock music again. Good atmosphere.
A. C.
Skinny hat manager sorted my friends coat pocket out so she could get her ID. LEGEND
N. C.
One of the best go to bars in Reading
A. G. B.
Extremely well-run, perfect precautions during the covid pandemic. The people who run this place really know what they are doing and actually care and take things seriously. The professionalism was beyond what I expected and actually experienced in the UK in general during the pandemic. It was not crowded inside, simple check-in via mobile phone, we were shown to a table in the garden with ample distance from others, ordering was very efficient and safe via mobile. Staff wearing face shields, very polite and efficient. I had the best experience visiting the Purple Turtle. Much better experience than any of the pubs/restaurants I have visited in London/Oxford/Reading during this period. Also great music as always. :)
7.
Very nice customer service , lady behind bar was very helpful, security was visible everywhere so big plus for that.
Only one less start as this place needs upgrade with furniture's.
N. K.
By far the best place in whole Reading city. Live music very often and affordable prices. Decent cocktails with quick service and comfortable sofas to enjoy your drinks. Outside there is a huge place where you could smoke a shisha but mind this: only one round of coal. There is another bar opening just on weekends. When the weather is good is a lovely place to catch up with your mates. I totally recommend this one, specially if you like rock music.
T. K.
They have renovated the place and made it all nice. The appeal of this place was that it was a total dive and that's what made it so nice along with the only bar that was open late, where there was never any trouble and had decent music. It's a great revamp, just hasn't got the atmosphere of before.
Regardless it's still the best bar/club in Reading, definitely a must visit.
S. W.
Great for live music. A little trendy for the over 50s.
S. S.
Just went for a drink here, it's a very alternative rock type bar. Probably specified for the younger generation with their music choices which for me is the type of place I like going. Didnt know if the place was open or not as it was so dark inside, we chanced it by opening the door, got a pint and sat outside. Their garden is pretty cool, we really liked it. Would definitely go again!
B. M.
Lovely venue, quick and friendly service. One of my favourite places to go. Cocktails are great.
J.
it's like the TARDIS but they serve drinks and have tombstone tables
W. W.
First time here in over 10 years. Very busy but excellent staff. Clean bar, good atmosphere, casual drinking, good background beats.
Watched a one of burlesque show in the lower bar - very enjoyable.
S. C.
Best place in Reading. literally for every age, gender, group size, unless you're a bunch of 18 year old college kids trying to pull, then this is the best place for a night out in town. bit quiet in the middle of the week, still great drinks and music and atmosphere though, and the balcony and outside lounge are very nice. Has a downstairs with grime and heavy dance music too.
D. L.
Nice place for a beer and some music
M. S.
The best place in Reading. There's an inside and outside area. I loved how the whole place was designed, the colors and decorations on the walls. There are two floors with different music, we mostly stayed at the first with punk/rock/alternative songs. You can also smoke shisha here or play a table football. Affordable prices and great atmosphere. Sometimes it's too crowded and it gets messy towards the end of the night, but that happens everywhere. Anyway, I always had a good time!🤘
J. G.
Post-Coid visit in October 2020.
Very happy with the safety measures put in place in response to government guidelines. The staff are also very friendly, with good service. The app ordering experience is fairly solid but could be improved - it's a little clunky compared to other apps.
Where there is room for improvement is value-for-money; you're definitely playing london prices here for what is certainly a student type of environment. Additionally, some members of security were over-zealous in their responsibilities. Other than that we had a pretty good time here.
S. O. R.
Two levels of Night club with music on both levels. Bars stocked with any kind of drink lots of bottled drinks. Great place to come to chill out inside or outside in heated garden. Busy the weekends. Great for groups. University students. Or alone. Great atmosphere. Right in centre of town off Gun Street.
D. J.
Awesome gigs and cool audience and staff. Very nice outdoor place at the backyard. Place you'll never get bored of. P.s. loo design with icon rock stars needs special attention, my word!!
K. B.
Amazing venue great music great atmosphere, was way too warm in the main bar mind but ok when you wrestled past guests to get outside.
Can't see where to reply via mobile, we went in August 2019 when I originally left my review but I saw a spelling error whilst on here, so thats why it looks recent as it amended it to 'a day ago' when I updated it annoyingly. So it was hot purely because there was so many people in there at the time, its probably nicer now with social distancing etc :)
D. S.
Good venue. Not for the over 30s.
Q. B.
Nice bar come night club in Reading. We were given the outside bar area fully for a private function. Unlike normal "room hires" this was a great area, with a mix of seating and cover (from the summer rain) that endured no one felt out of place or on top of each other. In what was a large group of very different people.
B. D.
Went on a Friday out of uni term time. Still as great as 20 years ago during university. Really busy, but fairly fast bar service and amazing music from 90s and 00s. Mixed crowd. Older and young, though probably male heavy.
M. D.
Good mix of rock music and also DnB downstairs. Large multi level smoking area with patio heaters. Decent selection of beers and other drinks offered. 10/10 would go again 🤙
W. P.
Staff are welcoming and kind here. Optional seating area indoors and outdoors which is great. So quick and easy to order using the code that is provided on each table. Would come here again🙂
G. S.
Good music for little jumping on dance floor, lot of place to be lost.
Need to watch yours drink, glass collector take my full glass of beer 5 min after purchase.
Some map on walls will be helpful, was hard to find toilets😅
h.
This place will go out and get you Subway like a bizarre delivery service BUT they'll call it a footlong on the menu and come back with a 6 inch. But that's just the subway stuff idk if you care, nice place otherwise
C. Q.
To the causal observer the Purple Turtle could be mistaken for a place somewhat similar to the Old Pink Dog Bar on the lower south side of Han Dold City as featured in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
This however can only be passed off as a bad rumour; for one, because there is no evil-looking bird perched behind the bar screeching out the names and addresses of local contract killers. And two because there is also no old dead landlord's
hand and forearm serving drinks and throwing out people who cannot pay.
Instead this is a great rock themed bar with long-haired staff dressed and tattooed as you would expect. The drink choices are plentiful and the atmosphere is friendly. Though one or two of the punters may come across as being weird; but probably are mostly harmless.
Five o'clock on a Saturday is not too full by all accounts, but certainly busy on the run up to the evening rush. By reputation and understanding, the place can get very packed. It's also not surprising, as I expect all the old clientele from the closed Rising Sun pub come here.
There is certainly a good opportunity to see live bands here on occasions.
They have a nice two-level outdoor seating area with some covered bits, a large TV screen and also plenty of room to get away from the football being shown on it.
Like so many places now, they take debit cards. Though I did not ask whether they take American Express.
J. W.
We always have a fantastic night at turtle, Alice has been the highlight every time, she's always amazingly warm, friendly and kind to us and always makes us feel welcome and glad we chose Purple Turtle of all the places to go for the night! Every time she comes to our table she's always the absolute best
D. R.
Awesome night. As it is one of the only places in reading open till 3am you get a real mix of people here. The place has a large outdoor area with 1/2 of it being under cover. Bars in every section of the place and your never far from a toilet. Free entry but if this is your last stop of the night beware of the queue to get in. I suggest using a toilet before you head there as we were waiting 30mins to get in. Well worth it though, cracking night. Plenty of doorman so no trouble
L. M.
Since the revamp its a much nicer place. Very student oriented and most defiantly night life although if you want somewhere quiet to go during the day it would be a good choice especially in the summer with its lovely decked garden terrace, split over a couple of levels.
J. E.
The staff are very nice and you can get along with the bounces as well.
Drinks are a bit more pricey but the music's great on Friday and Saturday because reks is the DJ
M. S.
Good drink, great venue, wonderful staff. However, the tipping system on the card machine is a bit cheeky being that it asks for a tip on each transaction. Having spoken to individuals I know that have visited since the implementation of this, they have said there is a feeling of "obligation to tip".
G. C.
Was good, their selection of Ales and Ciders isn't as good as it used to be. Staff are great and the door staff work hard.
Edit: bumped up, due to honest feedback from staff and I'd been too harsh score wise. Is a shame that an ale is no longer an option though.
A. L.
Best place in town to get some party.
M. F.
Just an all-around fun bar. Great live music, events (like movie nights), interesting mix of people and always busy. Bar staff are less than friendly but that doesn't take away from the eclectic buzz.
J. M.
There's beautiful open space terrace which I like the most. Also, there are three levels in the house, each playing different type of music to satisfy the different taste of the visitors. The purple turtle employees are polite and friendly, starting with the security guards, ending with the bartenders, they all welcome you and wish you come back soon.
D. A.
Always a fun place to go to. Free Entry and ok prices.
Several different bars and the outdoor bar is good place to rest when the music inside is to much. Good place to go after work with friends. Some staff are s*it and arrogant. You learn quickly what bartender to avoid.
Check out the art works in the lady bathroom. Super cool!
A. R.
Good sized venue with multiple bars.
Cellar bar has a nice dungeon theme, including cell like seating areas.
Large outside area on multiple levels with good heating in the winter.
Often has music and is open late, but doesn't serve food so eat before you head there.
d. p.
I came here to see a band, the staff were very hard working and helpful. The band itself was brilliany, and there was a wonderful atmosphere at the pub. The outside area was great, plenty of different seating and places to relax. They have a few games in the outside area and also do sheshas. There is plenty of selection of drink and more than one place to see music as there is a basement aswell. Overall a lovely evening.
M. O.
A great venue good vibe
A. R.
Purple Turtle is a great bar. Good range of Whisky and friendly staff. Nice place to chill with friends. They get a lot of stick for the playlist but I've found that it's usually a nice change from the normal club music. Outside is great as long as it's not rained recently! Be aware that under 18's aren't allowed in at any time of day.
M. B.
This place is so cute. Don't let the first impression as you walk in the door be your lasting impression. The room downstairs, the toilets and the whole outdoor area out the back is great. The decor downstairs is gothic and victorian inspired from the wall paper to the shape of the toilet doors. The decor in the toilets are so quirky with tributes to old musicians and loads of different shaped mirrors. There are plenty of toilets and nice and clean too. The outdoors area has plenty of seating, a bar, heat lamps, gaming tables and a waterpipe. The staff are authentic and friendly and they often have some live artists playing. If you're in Reading, stop by the Purple Turtle!
K. L.
Awesome spot for good value drinks and fantastic live music! The only thing bear in mind is that most people will be absolutely wasted! Best not to wear your most expensive stuff and you'll have a smashing time! Great staff and security!
R. B.
I really enjoyed visiting this club as part of my brothers stag. It was very busy and crowded but the music being played was great! The club is on multiple levels with large elevated outside areas with a huge screen for entertainment. I would definitely go again.
A.
I visit here on a fairly reqular basis. It's a good late night venue that is busy with a mix of crowd types. The entrance level bar tends to focus on bands and alt music. Whilst downstairs tends to be more urban or drum and bass depending on the night. The jewel of the venue is the outside area which has a shish bar and a couple of normal bars in a large 2 floor outside area. The drinking terrace/garden is partially covered and has heaters. Drinks here are basic and expect to be served in plastic glasses.
T. K.
An overall good bar even with it's infamous reputation. Only prefer the outside space and ground floor bar myself as that's the level without the house, grime and EDM music but anyone who likes that would also enjoy that in the basement level.
Staff generally good and prices reasonable plus it's the only place still open after everywhere else closes so a compulsory stop on any given night out.
J. M.
The Crown jewel of reading. Good for a day drink with massive outside areas for shisha and Smoking. Down stairs for later night goers open late and each separate section has It's own bar. Can get seriously busy on peak club nights but only proves the communal love for this venue
R. T.
Oldest in group 60 years old Door staff very good and polite and felt very safe Really good place for late night drink
o. t. t.
Amazing place felt safe and welcomeing
D. M. F.
The horrendous hangover is almost always worth the night out in the turtle, great multi area venue with a mix of rock, metal classics and heavy dance, dnb downstairs. Seen quite a few decent live bands here too.
C. R.
Brilliant bar, good staff who are efficient and yeah they aren't over the top, they are there to get you a drink. Not pretentious. Have loads of live music, loads of different areas and good beer on tap. Not a chain bar.
P. M.
Great band and staff 👍
j. A.
A true Reading legend, the Turtle should be experienced by everyone at least once. It's always fun, and there are plenty of lovely people there (and a couple of scary ones to make it interesting). Some tasty beers, best experienced around 10pm on a Saturday night when the place is nice and lively.
D. W.
Reasonable selection of ale, craft beer & lagers. Busy when sport is on.
V.
On a Sunday evening me and my friend stumbled across this place, it was late around 12pm but we'd only just got out and wanted to continue with our precious time together. We were confused as to why they had 3 security men outside as peering in it looked like a quiet evening. As we sat down we realised that there was a downstairs area where the party really was at! They were playing some good tunes and it was really packed with a nice vibe. The outside smoking area was amazing! Best one I've ever been to, was cosy with a shelter and so much to do outside. Such a surprising night
I. M.
The Reading institution. Just go and enjoy yourself...
V. S.
Best place to watch the football word cup this summer in Reading :) this pub/bar features a 2 floor garden with outside bar, heaters, plenty of seats, street food on the weekend; a main floor with a stage featuring local bands and pop/rock music, table football; and an underground dance floor with dance music. I really like the relaxed athmospehere, the amazingly decorated toilets and the options for different type of entertainment for one outing. My favorite in Reading.
P.
A great place for live music. Big space outside with a bar, you can do a bubbly pipe thing if you want. Good bar staff serving a good selection of ales/lagers/ciders.
S. R.
pretty solid to be honest, good selectioncof drinks, lovely staff and the location is great for me.
J. R.
Interesting venue on a Thursday night usually busy. Mostly a younger crowd in there though. Make sure no matter how old or young you are take your ID otherwise you won't get in.
a. g.
New design, toilets and basement excellent. The last 2 Sunday nights brilliant music and atmosphere nice to see a mixture of people enjoying the Sunday event.
Will the Thursday night be returning as this was also a brilliant midweek event with a great atmosphere and variety of music .
Lovely place to chill, socialize and enjoy a variety of urban music .
H. p.
Really enjoyed my time at Purple Turtle. Drinks are a good price and there is a good vibe. Perhaps more music outside would have been nice but apart from that it was great
A. s.
Good music on various levels. Really nice rear terrace to sit and actually talk to your friends. Gets busy around 01:00 on wards as do most pub/clubs.
D. B.
This is a unique cocktail bar with live music, people are friendly and cheerful. Staff are friendly, decor is spacious and warm. Has a good lineup throughout the week.
J. N.
This is an awesome bar. Great range of beer and nice staff. Frequently had good quality live music and the beer garden is absolutely marvelous.
C. M.
Classic Reading bar, which still hosts cutting edge underground music from time to time but has sadly become a victim of its own success over the years - due to a severe lack of any credible late night competition in Reading. This means extreme overcrowding most weekends and sometimes-aggressive vibes since it now attracts a more mainstream laddish crowd, in contrast to the haven of subculture it used to be (possibly rose-tinted spectacles). Just goes to show there's now a massive gap in the market for a genuinely-alternative late night venue in Reading. On the bright side, the Turtle will hopefully be vastly improved by the planned basement extension, which should help with the often-extreme overcrowding downstairs.
O. S.
This is the place to be in Reading after dark. Good place to go after other pubs close in town. They also have great undiscovered bands playing mostly on weekdays.
R.
It's the Purple Turtle, it's one of the mainstays of Reading. It was here when I lived in Reading 15 years ago and it's still here now but this time doing 4.95 Long Island iced teas. Nice bar with plenty of character. I hope it's here for another 30 years.
D. S.
Absolutely fantastic place with great staff. All but one that is. One of the managers, called Gary, let the place down massively. A band was supposed to be playing, after some issues they gave up. My girlfriend and I decided to put some tunes on. Even though no one else minded, because Gary did not like the songs, he switched them off. Completely unprofessional and complete moron. Ruined our experience and let down what looks like an amazing place. While "Gary" works there, we will not return.
p. r.
Now they've done the turtle up it's an amazing place. (Btw I loved it back in the day though where it was just a rock bar you could go to after all other pubs had shut) but now they've renovated the back you could take your family there! Very impressed.
G. J.
I had a great night, the music was really good, if you are in to that metal, quick service at the bar all night long, massive selection of people that go in there. Was a decent bar, very different to what it use to be.
A. L.
It's a Reading institution. Crowd is an interesting mix of people and usually at least half-decent music playing in one of the 2 rooms. Nice outside beer garden too. Oh, and table football!
A. K.
One of the places to go if you are in Reading(or Oxford). Loud music cheap alcohol and people parting! Can be quite crowded during Friday and Saturday. Two different rooms to suit your music taste
K. C.
Really nice bar with a massive beer garden. We were there on a Friday and it was so busy you could nearly get a drink at the bar! It was nice and chilled out though even with the crowd so if in reading on a nice evening it's worth a visit
M. A.
It's a magical place where you can dance the night away to Foo Fighters, Slipknot, Linkin Park and other alternative music and make friends with randomers through shared love of this music. One of my favourite places on the planet.
E. B.
Lovely vibe. Good reasonably priced drinks. Super friendly staff. Amazing live bands when they're playing. Amazing DJ when not!
G. G.
Nice place for bear and rock music. Easy in the evening, loud and busy late at night. Comedy club and live music are running weekly with great little surprises.
A. M.
Great vibe and drinks. Got a little busy towards midnight, bar staff reverted to the untrained head down shouting " who's next" so we left. No one has time for that type of amateurish bar staff. Shame, tainted a good visit.
T. T.
Massive club with 3 areas, underground dungeon for dnb with it's own bar. Middle outdoor area with another bar and DJ and upper floor club area. Overall I think more than 3 bars and 3 themed rooms to go to
J. S.
Only good place for dancing and drinking late Reading has, so has to be the best. Take ID or you won't be able to get in, no matter how old you are.
M. S.
Great rock club in Reading. Been here more than any other club. Smoking terrace is awesome in both summer and winter (heated benches).
C. T.
Good outdoor space. Staff really accommodating... managed find us a table with no pre booking
R. M.
One of my favourite bars, everything to like about The Purple Turtle. Highly recommended.
M. B.
The only non pretentious, nonjudgemental bar in town. Million pound refit including dungeon bar. A must for any metal, drum n base, electro swing or rege fans. Full of happy young people. Photo ID required on the door.
M. E.
Really enjoyed the atmosphere, served quickly considering how busy it was
J. R.
It has shisha, three different floors including an out side area with heat lamps. The bar staff are always friendly, it also has also has some amazing cocktails. In addition, it's always free entry.
H. 0.
Always a fun place to go in town. There's always something going on whether it's karaoke on a Monday comedy night on a Tuesday and bands on a Wednesday. Never a dull moment.
O. S.
Great place which has not changed through the years. It has a great atmosphere, no attitude, no problems and you can wear what you like. The only minus is the attitude of just one of the bouncers but hopefully he will go soon.
R. D.
Good way to end a night of pub drinking. Ambiance is always hit and miss depending on crowd and music. Two floors mean that you might find your style of music playing somewhere. Large smoking garden, but drinks could be cheaper... That said, a one-for-the-road often spiraled into drinking and dancing well into 3 am!
J. E.
This is one of the most fun bars in all of Reading. Whenever I visit England I always stop in for a wild night. Affordable drinks and good music.
T. B.
Moved to Reading 2 years ago and this is the place to go with friends! Lovely Staff and great venue!
J. S.
Great place, for rock and metal music the DJ was amazing RIP Rex you will be missed.
D. L.
Friendly, fun atmosphere and with a wide range of beers and spirits. Plenty of seating and toilets are clean. Recent refurbishment didn't change the atmosphere.
A. C.
Atmospheric and bohemian town centre institution. Great outdoors space all year round. Much Live music . Cant stay up past midnight these days which is when its at its bustliest
L. C.
Nice atmosphere. Empty but made to sit right at the back. Toilets very clean

I often come to The Purple Turtle for nights out. I like the vibe and think it’s a friendly relaxed place to go.
Recently though as it’s getting more popular the queues for drinks are getting ridiculous! They need better or more staff unfortunately and often this will put me off the idea of going there. Often on Saturday nights you won’t be able to get in! When I first went to purple turtle is was a place for after your night out for relax and have some drinks however purple turtle has now moved it’s last entry to earlier so this isn’t possible. I think they are trying to make themselves the place to go instead of the place to go after the night out which I get cause you don’t make as much money on drinks however I think they are really missing out as uni students often won’t go there because of this.
Although this review sounds like a lot of moaning I love purple turtle however it is and wont stop going there for a while.
W. L.
Honestly my favourite bar in the world. The main room is used for live music and performances and there is a r and b dungeon downstairs. But the main part of the purple turtle that i love is the outside terrace. Its absouloutly massive!. Heat lamps, sofas, hookahs and lots of space. Drinks here are cheap and proper. They also provide a great variety of shots and attract about every type of person here. The purple turtle is a must go for reading!
R. L. (.
Great bar, I am from Canada and this place makes me feel at home every time. Awesome music throughout the place, dance floor in the basement and a great patio. Must party place in Reading
c. b.
Brilliant time. ...and fantastic Jam tribute band💕
I'd love to come here more often but my boyfriend prefers to stay in in his pj's and slippers!!!!😬...he's getting old!!😩
F. W.
Oh lord, The Purple Turtle. It's confusing, you will get lost, you will not be able to tell if it's two, three or four stories. Good luck on your toilet adventure when you have had one too many mediocre gin & tonics.
That said, the Turtle is not without its charm. There are live bands in the main room, the backyard is open and spacious, and it's not any more or less expensive than other bars in that area. You'll always find some spot at a bar or a table and there's an ATM inside if required.
Manage your expectations, and most importantly - go here when you're already at least a little intoxicated. You'll enjoy it a lot more that way.
S. B.
BBC introducing is a great night out, great selection of music, and all for free. Choose your drinks wisely and it's a bargain night out.
D. T.
This place used to be a guilty pleasure. Now with the renovations, especially to the outside area, this is a very decent spot for late night drinks. Shisha bar outside is a great addition.
S. H.
Staff are friendly and helpful, cant do enough for you. Atmosphere is great and an amazing unexpected beer garden. Thanks guys
B.
Live place good djs, mcs n atmosphere however drinks were swiped twice by the sneaky glass collector thus making us buy more when he was clearly caught by 3 people. Apart from that it's the place to be for dnb.
S. S.
Love this venue. Great acoustics, friendly staff, reasonably priced drinks and love the way they keep it ventilated so you don't die of the heat!
T. H.
Lovely bar with an unique feel and decor. Heard a great band from Basingstoke, Grafted. Would definitely go back to hear them again!
C. D.
The original in Reading. Great for a drink or three. Friendly staff and great jukebox! Also has live music. Just wish we still had one in London!
G. (.
I remember it being great in the beginning, not sure I remember leaving.
Usually a good sign.
J. H.
Great place for young people. Only problem is all the young folk are drugged up. Everyone's having a great time though. Well worth a visit if you're 18-40!
B. R.
The most approachable night club in Reading town, and approachable here means not the location, it's the staff, the value for money and the crowd there.. love the ambience of this place, the live performances... It's a fun place to be
V. M.
Good place to go, staff is friendly atmosphere is great, whenever I am in Reading this is the one place I have to go atleast once, great thing its open all around the week and music is ok in the room downstairs (dnb, house, garage).
F. C.
Turtle is the place where the awesome happens. I can't even count the amount of great experiences I've had there with friends. Good terrace, 2 different indoor spaces...Oh! And they have shishas as well!
T. M.
The staff were friendly and it was nice to see Turtle the way it used to be low key before the pandemic
T. V.
The best club in Reading.
It has live music every week and it works as a pub.
Different rooms with different music genders are available.
I recommend to go out in Reading!
R. M.
I think the best thing about the Purple Turtle is the variety. They have different music on different levels, multiple bars meaning you dont have to wait as long for drinks and a shisha bar (not the most authentic one ever but its fun). If you get there too late the queues to get in are massive so go early!
T. B.
I like Purple Turtle's mostly for its happy casual atmosphere and its large and well thought out outside area. I do have a few griefs. Door supervisors vary from being very professional and helpful to aggressive and overbearing. It causes more problems to charge through a crowd and knock everyone's drinks over to get rid of a guy having a row! They allow a later entry for those who work in local bars but they are rude and draconian about seeing payslips. When will some bouncers learn that they are the first impression to customers of a business and need to be friendly!
Outside area with its shisha lounge, upstairs, downstairs, dungeon dance floor etc etc make the place because unfortunately they switched beer suppliers and are left with a pretty shoddy range. Ciders and ales on handpull are good still. Some new nervous staff who aren't really improving with time. Pints of beer are poured using the 'swill it around to create foam' trick which screams of poor training. A staff member who I think supervises the bar tenders thought my £50 note (I know, I needed to spend it somewhere...) was fake and ripped it nearly in two trying to do something with the metal strip he must have read somewhere. Other staff and customers got involved and was clear no one knew what they were doing. Bit awkward and held up a very busy bar. Lady on the shisha lounge looks extremely bored and unhappy left alone. Purple Turtle should rotate staff around to keep her from nodding off.
I'll still keep going back for the atmosphere!
D. L.
The Purple Turtle is a staple of Reading life. I was a regular there 20 years ago, and though it's gone through quite the facelift since I was last there, the memories came flooding back. Great place to hang out with friends.
W. M.
Great drinks and cocktails, heated seats outside.... Brilliant idea. Great evening covid safe too 👍
J. B.
Very friendly staff. Mika and Lauren were very polite and helpful with my friend who was very sick. Provided plasters and water and escorted us out in a very friendly manner. Thank you guys :)
N. X.
You will probably end up here after everything else closes. Great atmosphere, mix of young and 'old' crowd. Queues at the bar are the only bad thing.
T. W.
First impression walking in was not good. However, we went downstairs and the music was brilliant and we found a little seating area just for us
S. D.
Such a cool, vibrant bar in town. The best one really
A. N.
Had a great night here with co-workers. Place is actually pretty large with several different areas in the club. They also have an outdoor Shisha bar.
p. g.
I have spent more hours in this place than are good for me, my hearing or my liver - but it's still brilliant! Loud, lively and friendly - basically, a laid back riot.
M. S.
Awesome bar!! The main floor plays classic rock music while the basement plays garage type music. Great selection of drinks too 🍻
R. W.
This place Is a good place to go late at night ...looks much better since the refurb.3 Different levels , music isn't very good though . Quick service and staff seem nice enough . Door staff are rude and unfriendly though , I would only go here again if there's nowhere else open .
N. W.
Perhaps not the legend the original was, this is still a great place. Decent beer and atmosphere made for a great late evening beer on a fleeting visit to my former home town.
L. V.
As mature adults having a night out in turtle im so disapointed in treatment by door staff .the male person with me who after few drinks looks bit stiff serious .not bothering anyone .we were getting ready to leave after our drink .doorman comes up says youve got to leave youve had too much too drink . ..right in personal space ...weres the respect for decent people .. their was lot people under the influence ... as people in our fifties treating us like no bodys . I love the turtle when we have a night out . .. no people skills makes you feel so small in front of people . ...disgusted ..never in all our years been treated like this in turtle ..disapointed
F. D.
Classic turtle; such a eclectic mix of people and sums up Reading. Colour, religion, race, disability or social circle, everyone is congregated and have a good time. Check it out. Weekends are busy!
T. C.
Really cool place since the refurb a while back.
More of a late night destination for me, and drink quality limited, but iconic place in Reading and I hope it remains so....
C. C.
Great place to meet up with friends to have a drink. Great night life with a shisha garner outside and outdoor heating and bar and outdoor games to play
S. J.
It is so big, it got great music, and it's free! Open till late and you usually always get in :)
I love it there! But it's always crowded.
P. M.
Rock club with Popular/Alternative twist. Been a favourite since late teenage years and will always come back for a dance drink mosh scream! 🤘
M. C.
Lots of character. Worth checking forthcoming bands and events, such as burlesque. Sadly, they have taken real ale and Belgian beer off the pumps.
T. G.
Very fun place, lots of different rooms with a dedicated atmosphere each. The drinks are good, not too expensive and there's smoking pipes tables!
G. F.
Long queue to get in but went quickly, friendly staff, reasonably priced drinks. Music for everyone. Several rooms to choose from.
S. F.
Lively venue, with a great mix of music. Live and rock upstairs, dance music downstairs. No real ales, but would recommend.
d. b.
We only popped in as we were around the corner, however it was a great bar with a decent live band (not backing tracks). Just wished it was nearer home.
N. G.
Good atmosphere.... Nice beers.... What is that clock display? You should go just to see that upstairs in the smoking area.
M. S.
More of a student bar, but still a nice place to have a drink and a sheesha/hookah upstairs (if you are into that?!)...
L. W.
Despite The Purple Turtle being incredibly busy it's still my favourite place to go in Reading. Snakebites, rock music upstairs, dirty drum and bass and MC nights downstairs; what's not to like?
L. S.
Great vibes, great drinks, culturally important spot.
B. A.
Brilliant venue...
Too bad my gf decided to get off with multiple guys in the club...
Ahhh well, at least this place had a good atmosphere...
R. S.
Great bar, with 3 separate areas making it great for whatever you're In to. Can easily spend a whole evening here.
B. L.
3 stars as I've been here a lot, although never sober! Definitely a good place for the end of the night as open until 4am...
C. M.
Great vibe, loud music and the outside seating has heating. Different areas will have different music playing.
T. O.
Lovely bar / club, lots of rooms and levels inside and out, different music options, I love this place for the end of s might out in Reading
J. B.
I went to the Purple Turtle to see live music. Only draft beer is lager. Staff friendly & live music evenings are regularly held.
P.
Had a good experience. Juice based cocktails are good, LIIT could be improved though. Great ambience
s. a.
Nice club
Shisha people are bumbaclarts..... Rip off
M. T.
Been around for years, I've only known of it for 10 years as not originally from Reading. Great place if you can get in at the middle of the night.
J. C.
Great music, great layout, you can chill out outside on the decking or dance away on the 2 different dance floors.
E. S.
This place is really cool it has an arcade machine table soccer and the bar looks really cool and upstairs you can smoke shisha. Definitely recommend this place.
n. p.
Yes, no venue goes without some areas for improvement, but the 'Turtle' with its questionable sonics, ageing aesthetics and powerfully articulate bouncers is an institution, be it just Reading or (yes I said it) the United Kingdom,
M. P.
Recently refurbished. Two small dance areas. Plenty of outside areas that are covered and with multiple bars. A very relaxed atmosphere.
R. E.
Amazing as normal!!! Best place to drink snakebite is highly recommended
H. C.
I like the D n B cellar. Not so keen in the upstairs rock stuff though. Not as danceable. Great beer garden.
J. G.
Still does the job but a little overrated and nowhere near as good as it used to be.
J. B.
This was once a cool much talked about little bar..... now, much bigger with outside bar and seating, downstairs bar too, this place is a must on a Friday/Saturday night. ID required!
T. C.
Was my go to place since its conception. Big up yo Danny and the gang. Great place and will always be a huge part of my life.
J. S.
Awesome selection of tunes, decently priced drinks, and a huge outside area in comparison to other clubs in the area. Definitely recommend.
C. G.
You can't go wrong in this place. It's got it all. Live music, DJs, food, booze, massive tv screens and inside and outside drinking. Always open until 3am.
D. D.
Lots of little nooks to hide in for smaller groups. Open spaces and beer garden for larger groups. Variety of music. Not afraid to rock out.
H. B.
Friendly staff and nice drinks..
Loved the place and will visit again
v. p.
Nice place to go for a night out. Don't get disappointed with the crowd at 10 pm... Party starts from 1 am ☺️
T. T. E.
Choice of 2 rooms, Bar staff really kind, nice outdoor smoking area. Perfect for after date or with a group.
R. H.
The perfect ending to the night, we always end up to the Purple Turtle. Open until late, a great evening every time.
J. M.
Great place to have some quality time.
L. M.
Great bar friendly staff good atmosphere drinks are really expensive though paid £5.50 for my pint which was the only bad thing really but in general a good place to go if your looking for a good atmosphere
s. n.
Had a fantastic night here after the Madness gig at Rivermead, drinks reasonable, DJs great :)
R. S.
Love it!! Quirky, unique, staff were super friendly and helpful and very corona safe x
S. J.
Ah I love Purple Turtle. Great mix of chilling with the heated benches and music to sing and dance to inside. I always come here when i visit reading.
P. D.
This place takes me on a nostalgia trip back to my student days. Love the ambience, haven’t been when it’s heaving with students, but imagine it’s great fun
N. M.
Great place for a drink late afternoon very friendly staff good range of drinks. Great outside space also
a. s.
Fair prices, nice mix of space across a few floors and outside area. Music so so, but vibe is pretty decent in its place.
B. M.
If you like yer wobs an bobs like then hit up PT on a Friday like. Right ole rave on like, obvs not as wavey as Brisol but best you gon get down this way
B. P.
A great bar where you'll find an eclectic mix of people. Open pretty darn late with no cover, best place in town.
P. S.
Everybody visiting Reading have to visit the Purple Turtle, used to be a dive then got a refurb and made amazing. Now it's becoming a dive again due to the clientele. Still a must see.
D. B.
Always an amazing night out; great atmosphere, diverse crowd of people, no pretense, just fun times.
T. T. R.
Brilliant atmosphere but real busy and not a lot of space to dance
w. t.
Lot of fun. Has a great outdoor area.
D. S.
Reading institution, one of the few places that's managed to pull off a major refurbishment and come out the better for it. Very mixed crowd every night of the week.
T. f. T.
I have been in the bar business for many years, and this is the coolest bar I've ever been to. The outdoor area and the basement are amazing.
J. L.
Awsome, diverse, small dance floors which play same music each week I've heard but liked the vibe and set up
C. O.
Always a great night out. Good atmosphere, friendly staff, always feel very safe.
A. N.
Great place with lots to do! There's 2 dance areas, an outside smoking/chat area with shesha area, and 3 bars!!
A. H. (.
Great student bar, but only before the club section opens. Also avoid the toilets at all costs
N. A.
Wasn't disappointed with the deck. Very youthful patrons.
M. W.
Great place for a night out, only complaint is that it can get very crammed as it gets busy. There is always a large outside, weather permitting.
L. M.
Really great place on a Friday night! The DJ was great, played really great songs and the sound is brilliant!
T. C.
This place has come on leaps and bounds sice the refit I honestly can't believe the difference to the outdoor space. Definitely a favourite of mine in Reading.
A. K.
Bit more upmarket these days. Decent value drinks, unique clientele, varied music. I love this place...
L. B.
Had a fantastic time. So many nooks and crannies with different genres of music throughout the place. Definitely will be coming back :-D
T. K.
I've been going to the turtle for years and really enjoyed the atmosphere before the renovation. Happy to say since the work it has not lost any of its character.
M. B.
Great bands and friendly staff
r. w.
Reading royalty one of the pioneering places in Reading representing all genres of music and always been one of the coolest nights out
R. O.
Best bar in Reading central . Great music. Great staff all round top notch .
D. P.
Not my cup of tea as a place, grungy but bonkers atmosphere. You have to go just to check it out as in my view it is pretty unique.
G. S.
Much improved, since I was last in there a few years back, love the decor. A fun and unique place to have a shant.
L. D.
Bit pricey and crowded, but always a great atmosphere and nice place to socialise now the outside gardens have been improved.
h. w.
Great atmosphere. Good live music venue. Good drinks.
Thank you
J. A.
My go-to place for a night in Reading. Two floors of music and a huge outdoor space which is great for the summer months.
A. B.
I heard the legends growing up around wycombe of the purple turtle in reading and went for the first time a while back and it was an excellent night out
M.
It's a great place to go if you like popular rock music that immediately transitions into Eminem
T. W.
Really cool place. Drinks fairly priced. Slightly rude bar staff.
C. C.
The clubhouse, need I say more?
Okay yeah it's a cool place. Great atmosphere and not too expensive
O. H.

A decent club in reading with a good range of music, only problem was the amount to people working in the bar in comparison to how many people are trying to buy drinks
K. M.
Despite time passing by, people changing its still has it charm. People are talking to each other. It's always a good night out
M. M.

T. K.
Alternative feel and music. Gets busy toward the latter half of the night but outside area is much bigger than the inside.
g. b.
A Bar that pays great homage to pop culture references dating back to the 1970s and onwards, the floor might have you seeing purple turtles if you decide to have one too many of their Devils brew
T. D.
What a place, its fantastic! The beer garden upstairs is something else, loved it
J. A.
Nice gaff.. if you're going to get the girl you're with a drink be prepared for creepers with no game back dooring it😂

S. P.
The place to be if you are going for a night out, plays rock music on one floor and dance music on the other. It also has a killer outside area.
D. B.
Quiet night on a Wednesday (so far) but great atmosphere - as always!
D. R.
It's still the turtle after all these years, but bigger and better with a proper live music space :-)
