Reviews of Duke of Wellington
J. F.
I love this place! I may be an impressionable American but this is EXACTLY what I'd hope to find looking for an English pub. Met one of the owners, super friendly. Food's good enough, beer's delicious!
B. R.
Went for Sunday lunch. It’s a traditional British pub through and through with a good range of Wadworth beers. The staff were outstandingly friendly and pleasant and the food was generous and decent value for the location. Adults had roast belly pork that was good with well cooked veggies and my son had a very nicely battered fish with chips.
K. B.
This historical place located close to the Red Funnel terminal is a must for visitors and locals. Easy to find it is close to lots of historical landmarks nearby.
The food is very popular and a good selection of well known beers on tap.
Early booking is recommended for meals.
In the winter months a lovely log fire is a great feature to sit beside.
Highly recommended it.
J. D.
Only popped in while passing but a great little pub! The only thing that smelt better than the lovely fire was the food the next table had - unfortunately I didn't have time to eat... Next time. Definitely next time!
R. D.
Awesome portion size on this Sunday lunch. Choice is 4 meats. Plenty of vegetables which is nice to see. The back room was historic and had real old world charm. The beers on tap were great too.
P. P.
Excellent venue. Food was fabulous, great music and friendly welcoming staff. Highly recommend.
K. U.
Great Traditional Pub and a fantastic Roast Dinner, lots of other choices on the Menu too. Definitely recommend you visit if passing by.
K. B.
Rusty and Rob are the new owners of this historic pub. They gave me and my dog Rocky the best welcome.
Different beers and generous meal portions, very good value. They do meat and veg for your dog.
I would make the long journey again just to visit this pub.
S. D.
Booked a table for Sunday lunch with family, incredibly impressed with the quality and quantity of the roast!
Staff were friendly, and managed an unexpected influx of wedding guests as well as possible. Would definitely visit again for the roasts!
S. J. B.
Simple food but delicious. The best funny sarcastic staff in a good way and grate table service for food. It's 2 hours away from where I live but I would travel that far to go there again . The staff made from place . Great little pub . Thank you for such good fun and laughter. That's right
R. R.
This pub was recommended to us by some people living in the area. We had some pub food and local beer. Both were very good and reasonably priced. We had great conversations with other guests at the pub. If you are in this part of old town Southampton I would suggest stopping by and having a pint, you will enjoy it.
B. C.
Haven't been here for years until last week when I went to a birthday party. Really cosy old fashioned pub, friendly staff and the buffet was great. Would definitely go back.
A. T.
Absolutely fantastic pub landlord and locals 👍 I popped in because i got lost and ended up staying for over 3 hours . Highly recommended 👍 👍 👍 👍
O. S.
Beautiful historical pub with a good choice of beers and ales. Has few tables outside. Staff was very friendly and efficient.
S. V.
Great, plentiful food and wonderful service
M. S.
Awesome proper pub in old part of Southampton. Just randomly stumbled upon it.
The great beer selection was only outdone by the building's history. Apparently some travelers on the Mayflower may have stopped here for a drink pre-travel.
Bartender was very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. Was kind enough to give me a tour of the 800 year old venue.
Kegs are kept in the basement with no refrigeration. Too bad I missed food service, looked like a place I wanted to try.
Keep up the good work...like you have for 900 years.
N. W.
We have been to this pub before and it's still lovely and cosy like it was in the Summer, the only difference was a real log fire!! The real ale has plenty of choice and the food freshly cooked to order! We had Beer Battered Fish and chips with mushy peas! It was very good!! Prices are very good too!!
A. F.
Excellent food, roast beef and roast pork dinners....just a bit better attention to service needed, but will definitely visit regularly
A. M.
We absolutely loved it. Sunday roast was truly exceptional, all members of staff were really friendly and the atmosphere is something else. We had a lovely meal. The only thing that was a bit of a downer was the dessert - chocolate fondant. Nothing special, the apple crumble they ordered next to us looked way better!
r. s.
Lovely little cosy pub with beautiful Tudor features. The fish & chips were fantastic, light crispy fresh fish and lots of well cooked chips and peas. Recommend it as well as the beer!
R. C.
Old and classic English pub found by chance walking through the old part of Southampton.
Room perfectly furnished in authentic old English style.
Good selection of beers all served with a pump method.
Definitely a great place to have a pint and eat something.
S. L.
Staying at the Leonardo hotel and rather than drink in hotel bar with absolutely no atmosphere came across the Wellington. So glad we did , lovely traditional pub with a wide selection of beers. I'm a Guinness drinker which they do not sell but they do sell a Stout.. which was lovely and can vouch for it. Lovely atmosphere and staff very friendly and made to feel really welcome. Spent 3 nights in there and eat twice . Just recovering from stage 4 throat cancer and have to be careful with food and my taste at moment is about 50% what it should be ,but the Lasagna was just what the doctor ordered. Loved the time we spent there and highly recommend it.
p. m.
A proper pub with friendly staff and wholesome pub grub. A good selection of beers and when we were there live music which was well supported but not crowded.
S. S.
Stopped here as part of a big group the night before setting sail on the NCL Bliss cruise ship and we are were treated very well! I am pretty sure we met the entire staff from owner to chef and all the wait staff so it was fun. We had the upstairs booked for eating arranged in two shifts which went very well. I had my first experience of real fish and chips here which I enjoyed, very large portion of fish that filled me up. The night we were there they also had a jazz band playing that night (Friday night). I will definitely be stopping here again next time I find myself in Southampton.
K. S.
Nice little traditional English pub. We stopped for a drink here as part of a wedding party and it was a great little place to have a drink in. The fire was on so it made it feel very cosy and staff were friendly.
R. L.
Lovely old 12 century pub owned by Wadworth brewery. Selling a good selection of Wadworth ales. Menu looked good, but didn't get to try.
T. B.
Absolute beauty of a pub I'm actually gutted I didn't get any pictures. Lovely decor with a very polite barman.
J. M.
Excellent beer, great food and the two guys behind the bar had a brilliant sense of humour, would definitely return
A. P.
Great food..great staff, great beer
Thank you .Duke of Welly..
T. P.
Great pub at Southampton's old town. The historic building and its decor are lovely, the food and drinks were great, while the staff was extremely kind. On Sunday, there is often a roast menu with great choices.
I. S.
Great service good food and selection of fine beers
T. B.
Lovely building.. very friendly staff, good drinks
T. P.
Fantastic food (especially Sunday roasts), great music and probably one of the best pubs in Southampton! Definitely recommend! Only slight criticism is the slow WiFi! ;-)
N. D.
Very friendly & helpful bar staff, lovely atmosphere.
C. D.
Really enjoyed our drink here last night. Very welcoming
X. S.
If it comes to places worth visiting in Southampton, this one definitely belongs to one of them.
Charming atmosphere, outstanding works of art hung on the wall, reminders of Titanic which started its tragic journey in this town and precise and very kind service.
Cordially recommended to all those who wander BUT are not lost
A. P.
Top service, top food, very friendly staff . A totally enjoyable evening . Thank you 😊
S. Z.
We liked The Duke of Wellington: warm atmosphere, cosy, excellent staff. We eated a traditional fish and chips, drinking a good beer, of course! :)
R. F.
A hidden jem in Southampton's Old Town! Great ale selection, wingback chairs, roaring fire and reasonably priced. It is everything you would imagine from a quintessential English pub. Well worth a visit!
s. s.
Booked here for a Sunday roast must admit all 3 of us agreed this was the best we've had out, lovely very old pub with a very good selection of Ales, highly recommended.
j. j.
Great little pub. Like stepping g back in time. Fabulous live music & atmosphere.
T.
Cozy and authentic place. We didn't spend too much time there, but it was a nice experience to have a beer in such an old place full of history. They sell local beers. The barman was very friendly and happy to help me to decide which beer was the best.
L. G.
Staff are great, food and drink are great too and a hell of a lot of history. The pub is older than America!
I. S.
The Duke of Wellington is one of the most historic pubs in Southampton. It was originally built upon Norman vaults and cellars in 1220 and was first leased out to a Benedict Ace, one of the city's earliest mayors.
In 1494 the building was converted into a public house after being bought by brewer Rowland Johnson who named it Bere House
O. S.
Good honest food with decent portions, good beer and friendly staff. Well worth a visit.
M. P.
Looking for somewhere in town for a Sunday roast and stumbled across this well reviewed pub. Tucked away on Bugle Street, it is a beautiful old fashioned English pub. The roast beef was just how your grandma would make it which was stunning. Attentive and friendly staff. We will be returning. £12.95 for a roast is superb value too.
J. S.
Small friendly pub. Great fish and chips!! Must go if you find yourself in Southhampton!
P. R.
Olde worlde beautiful pub with 4 excellent Wadworth beers. Very enjoyable experience. Highly Recommended
I. W.
Best Sunday roast in town.
A. D. R.
Traditional old style environment that is rarely found around. Classic options for food. Large selection of beers. Toilets are available on the ground floor. WiFi is also available. A function room is found in the upper floor, with a capacity of about 30 persons.
S. M.
Good local beers. Good food. Food arrived 10 minutes after order. Not real busy when we were there.
S. T.
Huge portions of food and nicely prepared. Friendly bar staff too. Lovely pint of Wadworths Swordfish. Will be back soon.
J. P.
Great pub! Nice clean beer lines and good selection of beers lagers and ale. Food is good and very large portions. Friendly staff and good atmosphere.
b.
Lovely proper pup. Not many left around these days. Highly recommended.
D. B.
Wonderful pub. Julian was a terrific ambassador and historian. Sat at the bar as tables were full/committed. Wouldn't have changed a thing.
A. M.
Fantastic pub food with large servings. Girls working behind the bar were really friendly and attentive. Short walk from the Holiday Inn and other area hotels. I shall definitely return for a meal next time in Southampton
O. R.
Very cosy, nice music and the best BBQ ribs and sticky toffee pudding! I would definitely recommend it!
r. w.
Excellent pub friendly staff good cooked food and drink
J. N.
We stop and had an snack load a ham and mustard sandwich, which came with salad and real chips. Tha beer was Henry IPA excellent. Recommend if in the area drop in and try the menu.
J. S.
Lovely pub, friendly staff, very good service.
The roast dinner was absolutely amazing,
big compliments to the chef! Pudding was lovely too. Will definitely be back.
D. C.
No better example of a quaint old fashioned English pub in town. Lovely lasagna, plenty of ales, crackling log fire and comfy armchairs. Like stepping back in time.
s. b.
Good burger, good service and good beer.
R. E.
Lovely old pub in Bugle street. We were getting married at Westgate Hall which you can see from the pub. We had a few drinks before the ceremony and everyone in the picture is part of our party. We got some amazing pictures here too.
T. P. P.
Stunning medieval setting, solid pub grub, decent ales!
K. B.
Lovely Sunday lunch here. Good value.
S. H.
Lovely staff great atmosphere fantastic food

We went just before Halloween and the place had gone full tilt spooky. Amazing to see such a great effort made and the staff were very friendly. 2 spooky 4 me.
V. L.
Fun local pub with nice folks and great food
M. P.
Great pub, didn't eat in there but saw the food others ordered and looked lovely. Great pub for atmosphere and staff brilliant
G. C.
Stopped by this amazing little pub for a nightcap after a night out. The girl behind the bar was really friendly and welcoming even though we turned up 20 minutes before closing. The building itself is packed with history and there are a few seats outside for a bit of Al fresco drinking on a nice evening, really worth a visit if you're in Southampton
D.
Brilliant pub with great pints and good atmosphere
c. b.
Drinks on the slightly pricy side but a nice pub for food.
S. G.
Great atmosphere, fantastic range of beers.
D. S.
Love this pub. Great atmosphere, lovely Xmas decorations and a real fire on the go.
S. A.

M. R.
V ery welcoming old pub. Good range of beers. Great food
D. G. F.
Great food and service even if we got there a lil late
A. P.
Food is fantastic, the ambient is great and they have a couple if alternatives for vegetarians and for vegans
S. B.
Came for lunch and drink. It's a nice traditional British pub, can't fault that. The beer isn't necessarily local and is largely Wadsworth beer which is good, not particularly better than any other breweries in Hampshire (or Wiltshire in Wadsworth's case). Price wise it isn't really worth it. £4.30 for a pint of cask ale when you can get a pint of quality locally brewed IPA on draft literally down the road for cheaper.
The food is nice pub grub. It's reasonably priced and decent sized portions. If you're looking for quality British pub food, I'd recommend here. However the service wasn't the greatest. Considering all we ordered was two sandwiches on a Saturday afternoon, it took over half an hour. It wasn't until I asked at the bar where our food was and was told that there was a backlog of orders. It would have been nice to have been told this beforehand.
Maybe come here for a beer and some food. If you're looking for somewhere to go for a decent beer however, there are much better places to go very nearby.
B. M.
Nice historical pub. A great place to visit. Friendly staff and good range of real ale.
H. C.
Booked a Sunday roast here and certainly wasn't disappointed!
The meal food was very tasty, freshly cooked vegetables (5 different veg in total), succulent chicken breast, stuffing, Yorkshire pudding a,tasty thick gravy and roast potatoes.
Absolutely will be going again with my family/friends.
D. M.
Lovely place great old fashioned atmosphere and food was great
N. H.
Nice atmosphere, and good pub food for the price. Staff could be a bit more attentive however.
K. H.
The food was great, tasty and in massive portions. Good value I'd say. Lovely building too.
The barman however was gruff and a little unwelcoming. A smile goes a long way. I also didn't like how he held the glasses right at the top when he poured the drinks but I'm a barman myself and am fussy about things like that. My beer was served in a dirty glass though and that isn't okay. They also had run out of a dish we had ordered he didn't appear to know to tell us until after we had paid.
Overall I'd say it was a decent experience and I might come back again, hopefully the barman is having a better day then.
L. S.
Not much going on in terms of atmosphere but it was OK. It just had a moody feel about it.
M. R.
Excellent, it was sooo nice to find a pub that is old school. Govial landlord, excellent beer, good looking food.
When was the last time you were greeted by the landlord suited & booted?
Was so nice to relive the old days, in an old style pub!
M. S.
Fantastic old style pub with great atmosphere and staff
D.
Good selection of beers ales and spirts, friendly helpful staff, Good traditonal pub food menu in a historic pub with a real fire place to add to the charm
A. L.
Ok, this isn't fine dining or fine prices, just a very friendly pub. We were here for the weekend to celebrate our anniversar. This pub became our local with the help of barman Lewis. He is a star and we wish him well as he will be a credit to any employer in hospitality. The Lakes
J. M.
Good service, good portions and good tasting food. A bit more expensive than I was expecting foe a pub, but other than that, good!
A. D.
A real gem of a pub! Small, cosy, traditional, No Thrills, no loud music and no gimmicks. Just how an English pub should be. The perfect venue fro a quiet chat and a quality pint at a reasonable price (try the Horison ale - an amazing beer). And friendly bar staff as well doing everything they can possible do to remain COVID19 compliant whilst not taking away the joy of the pub experience. Long may The Duke remain.
L. H.
Best fish and chips in Southampton. A traditional pub with great staff, food and drinks.
N. W.
Often pop in here before a match at St Mary's for lunch, good food and ale (the ale is a bit pricey though, £4 a pint for 6X, always well kept). Lovely pub with good service.
*UPDATE* *12/05/2019* Ale and food still good but there's a new barman who seems to serve every pint short, not too bad if the beer is cheap but at well over £4 a pint here not very good, see if he stays.
A. M.
Nice little proper English pub. Food isn't anything fancy but they do English pub food to a decent standard with a good portion.. winner of a combination and happy to recommend. Nice choice of ales and on receiving an Ale that had soured the bartender with zero quibles immediately offered to replace and suggested several alternatives. Recommend for a meal or a quiet nice pint.
M. W.
Proper old fashioned pub in the heart of old town Southampton. Wadworth ales, generous portions home cooked meals. Would recommend the fish and chips. Smart professional and friendly staff.
F. S.
Loved visiting. Great atmosphere. Cosy pub.
A. 6.
Rustic pub with long fire but doesn't have guinness on tap
D. W.
Great place to eat. Not a vast selection but very nicely cooked and presented. We had a superb steak & kidney pie with fresh veg and seafood cooked in breadcrumbs with fries and salad. Lovely old Tudor pub with log fire, friendly staff customers.
N. B.
What a great pub ! Good beer and food and friendly staff
M. B.
Service is spicy but warms during the stay - everything is ordered through the bar! Food was EXCELLENT. The Sunday Roast was wonderful and enough for a small army! Fish and Chips on point and there was plenty of space for a party of 12! Our hilight of Southampton!
N. S.
Very popular historic pub thar offers a fairly good selection of wines, spirits, beer and ales. The food is extremely good and not a bad price. The toilets are clean and the pub favours jazz music. Best pub in Southampton to visit in the winter due to an open fire and in the summer seating outside to admire the gorgeous display of hanging baskets and the old town district.
C. F.
Best roast in ages
J. A.
We went there as in theory they serve one of the best Sunday's roast, and it really disappointed us. If that is the best you can cook in Southampton, dudes, you got a problem.
Anyways, beers are off the hook and the place is nice.
K. T.
Took a friend for lunch Lauren was really friendly she took our drinks order.
We ordered 2 jacket potatoes which took about 30 minutes to arrive. The chairs could do with a clean Covid 19 track and trace is in place.
I don't think we will be rushing back anytime soon.
R. P.
One of Southampton's hidden, historical gems. I was introduced to this pub, back in 1995, when my friends held their wedding reception there. Nothing fancy, just the bride and groom, parents and myself and a sister.
I've since visited over 50+ times and yesterday was just another example of this wonderful little pub, pulling out its magic. Very friendly and welcoming staff and even the regulars make you feel welcome. Superb food and beer and for the price, good value. Highly recommended.
K. A.
Nice cosy & welcoming atmosphere for non locals. Had large roast on Sunday. 9 different vegetables as well as stuffing & Yorkshire's. Just great.
A few ales on draught for my Dad to enjoy & some decent wines.
So glad we found this haunt. So close to Westquay but away from hustle & bustle. Will be back.
J. M.
We had our wedding reception at The Duke of Wellington in Bugle Street. (14/07/2012)
The pub itself is beautiful, very historic and full of character and Vic and Lynn have created a very welcoming atmosphere.
The food was exceptional, very fresh and of a high quality. I had comments via text and email from people all weekend telling me how much they had enjoyed their meal. One person told me that the food was better than they had at their wedding which was at a very upmarket hotel!!
The service is outstanding - I cannot praise this place highly enough and would thoroughly recommend it to anyone, be it for a Sunday lunch or a full celebration. The landlords pay attention to every detail and go out of their way to make the experience special. The prices are very reasonable and we will definitely be visiting The Duke of Wellington again. Lynn and Vic, thank you both so much and we wish you every success - you certainly deserve it!
C. M.
Lived in Southampton for a long time and this was my first vsit here, Sunday Roast was great. Plenty of meat, 5 vegetables as well as lovely roast potatoes plus yorkie. Staff friendly and service good.
M. K.
Great food, nice beer, brilliant service. Top in Southampton.
P. D. C.
Great classic style pub. The staff is nice, the atmosphere and the place itself is wonderful, in this historical building. Good choice of beer, and food at honest prices. One of the best place for a Sunday roast in Southampton.
p. d.
One of the oldest drinking holes in Southampton, been a watering establishment here for over 600 years.. it has still the old beams and fire places, most else has now been covered up with a strange combination of early 20th century replication furniture mixed with a maritime theme. A reasonable selection of largest and beers, a more in-depth selection of wines, all quite expensive. The menu is good as are the serving size, which again, goes with the expected costs, all and all very pleasant, good lunch time clientele, but not a budget sensitive establishment.
A. V.
The Duke of Wellington is one of my favourite English pubs in Southampton. Just like the Tudor style outside of the building, the inside has a authentic feel to it, and the fireplace is often lit. There is a good selection of beers and cider to choose from. Excellent to have a drink with some mates. If you want to have a nice Sunday lunch, the place does excellent classic English pub food, for a reasonable price.
Always a delight to visit, I do recommend.
A.
Highly recommended! The food was delicious and at extremely reasonable priced. Portion sizes were very large too. The landlady was friendly & helpful too. Seemed like a 'locals' place, but we were welcomed in anyway
L. G.
Great food and beer! Amazing service and the gentleman who took my table reservation had a top notch customer service skills! Because of the delay of my train I arrived 30min late but was greeted with a smile and my table still waiting! Great experience and will visit again!
L. H.
An absolutely delightful little boozer. I'd never been to Southampton before, found this place on the first night and went back 3 times over 2 days. The landlord is a perfect host, great beer, great food, and an unbeatable atmosphere. And the hook and hoop game will literally have you hooked for hours! A must visit if you find yourself in Southampton.
L. A. H.
My first time visiting this lovely pub. I organised a social evening here for a local language school and my international students got to have a traditionally british experience in a building steeped in history and atmosphere. We tried the local ales and all ate fish and chips which we thoroughly enjoyed!
R. S.
One of my favourite pubs in Southampton now sorely missed as I no longer live there.
The staff were always wonderfully attentive and service was always quick at the bar, It is the perfect place for a cold winters day when they have their log fire roaring.
A. G.
Old old pub. Cosy. Nice semi-private room at the back for a meal with friends and family. They have a small selection of games like Jenga. Beer selection is quaint and good quality. Food is same-y. Their dessert was well appreciated by my friends. Clean toilets. Street parking limited.
I. W.
Nice and quiet drink with friends. Good service . Nice coffee
D. L.
This is a historic pub in the heart of old Southampton. It is mainly a drinking pub although they also serve food. It is small with a back room for dining. We were with a group of about a dozen people for lunch on a rainy Saturday when the Saints had a home game so it was very crowded.
M. H.
Lovley pub with nice staff, found this pub by chance they had just stopped serving food but kept the kitchen open for us. Please stop here if your in Southampton.
R. D.
Excellent food and beer. Atmosphere was wonderful.
M. K.
Lovely choice of bears on tap. Swordfish %5.0 vol on draft. Worth stepping inside on the right for a look at the specials food menu. It was a lovely charactor building with old history, to rest from a walk round the old town, a short walk to the ferry crossing to Hythe. The sun shines to the front seating pavement area in the afternoon. Our dog was welcomed which is a bit of a rareity of Southampton pubs unfortunately.
N. S.
Very nice pub lovely staff and food was great. Even got a bench outside in the sun
B. G.
Having just missed my ferry to the Isle of Wight I had an hour and half to spare and more by luck than judgment I found myself in this lovely traditional pub with what certainly looks like a friendly crowd. It was jazz night and there was around nine gentleman playing traditional jazz standards and frankly, it was a glorious find. This is likely to happen to me again and this will be my go to place to stop in rather than sit listening to the car radio for 90 minutes.
P. B.
Fantastic place, oldy worldly, historical pub. Lovely food, Home cooked ham is gorgeous.
C. B.
Not bad but can't give a accurate review as I only had a pint, that was nice. The food menu looks good, lots of variety. The pub is very old inside, well worth a visit, treat yourself :-)
L. H.
Sunday roast was best we have had in a pub. Friendly staff and environment was very safe. Excellent all round!
L. L.
Best roast in saints.... bar none
D. L.
Well run bar. Good value for money food, lovely ambience. Made to feel very welcome in this well established local gastropub that still has an authentic feel running through it. Will definitely be back.
I. P.
Lovely old pub with bags of character, decent beer and food. Recommended.
J. M.
We looked online for a pub restaurant near the Red Jet to Isle of Wight and this one popped up. So glad we went there as food and service was excellent!!
Beware portions are huge but food is of a quality not seen in a lot of pubs now. Staff are very nice and friendly. Highly recommend it!
T. C.
The only pub in town that's authentic, friendly, has good beer, and does good sized portions of food. 😎 Plus it has history and entertainment. Kind of like Cheers for the locals. 👌
L. A.
We really enjoyed our dinners and jazz jams and drinks here ! Everyone so friendly and welcoming for our 6 night stay nearby ! Thanks Vic and Jessica for the great memories with our nights spent with your wonderful restaurant!
T. C.
Excellent historic pub in the Old Town area of Southampton. Dating back almost 1000 years.
Staff are excellent, good selection of real ales and the home cooked food is good.
Try the Fish & Chips.
M. W.
A quiet, old-fashioned pub (in a good way) where we enjoyed good beer and tasty food.
M. O.
Lovely place it's one of those hidden gems, great drink and food serving real ales and traditional food I recommend the ham and eggs and the pub has got really fascinating history behind the place going back to 1220. Well worth the visit.
N. H.
5 different beers on nice choices the staff was friendly and helpful.
M. O.
The pub is very inviting, nice atmosphere and great place to relax after a visit from a beautiful Tudor house. The food was very good and customer service was great. The serving time is enough time to down a few pints.
M. C.
Lovely old traditional pub oozing with history and artefacts, food is good, great selection of beers and wines.
Would have given it five stars but quite a long wait for the food, but was worth it when it arrived.
G. S.
Lovely food, served in a very cosy, oldie-worldly and relaxing environment. It is an unpretentious and classic pub, with a lot of charm. Plus a couple of log fires when it's cold.
J. N.
Atmospheric friendly pub. Nice meals too. Proper home pub food always fresh not microwave really recommend can get busy on weekends with tourist.
A. G.
A good city centre pub but just off the main track, so not too busy or loud music blaring.
Tudor style building with open beams inside & out.
Seating out on the pavement & in a sunny spot, even late into the evening.
C. J.
A genuinely warm and inviting pub with very pleasant grub and enchanting decor.
Most valued moment of the night was my realisation they served Stowford Press. A real treat for myself!
S. P.
If you like the olde' world open fire and comfy chair pub coupled with great beers and atmosphere then this is the place for you.
Full of character and charm. A true delight in the side streets of the city.
J. N.
The place has plenty of interesting décor, artworks, and pictures that you will surely amaze. The rope that hangs above the bar is a great originality for the name of the pub. Very satisfying picturesque that you will enjoy.
B. M.

Very nice old fashioned haunted pub. Been around years but now with a south African couple that love the place and are entertaining and serve brilliant food especially Sunday dinners. Xx
M. P.
Good but missing the old landlord who gave it that extra special touch and warmth. Current landlords are stand offish and the atmosphere as dropped. Food still good.
t.
Simply superb, if you are after homemade cooked food and local ale! Want honest british food? You can't go wrong here! Cheers Vic & wife (never got to know your wife)! - a bloke by the fire on the 14th November '17! Cheers

It's a pre Tudor building dating back to about 1220
Lovely quaint old pub with very friendly bar staff
Lovely original oak beans and a nice open fireplace
It has a small restaurant area at the back which is also very pleasant
There is a good selection of real ales which are mostly from Wadsworth Brewery
I highly recommend this place for the historical value and the cost bar areas
Hence I awarded it a 5 star rating
C. R.
Small, old, personal pub, where they care about their beer and their customers. Nice food as well. This is how pubs used to be and I miss that, this is a very welcome find.

A comfortable place for an afternoon pint or a coffee. In the most historic part of Southampton. Southampton is a medieval walled town and resting your feet here, on a seat in Bugle Street in the summer is a pleasure to be savoured.
