Reviews of Sir John Barleycorn
J. H. (.
Sir John Barleycorn has recently been taken over by a new owner and is consequently under new management. We had lunch there yesterday, the food is really lovely, service was amazing and because it was Father’s Day dad got a special gift which was a really nice touch. it was good fresh wholesome food and we each enjoyed three courses. All in all it was a very pleasant lunch experience and we will, without a doubt be going back there soon

We enjoyed our stop off at the Sir John Barleycorn. We arrived off the highway coming back up towards London. The pub has a beautiful thatched roof but the service was great. We were told the pub has recently re-opened and they clearly have done a great job. The decor was really nice and comfortable for regular relaxed dining and the service was helpful, friendly and professional but also very comfortable. I had a great Sunday Roast of Gammon, my wife the tasty Seafood Linguine and my little boy a very nice pasta with sauce. We hope to stop back again whenever we head down to Poole area and wish the business all the best of luck!

Sir John Barleycorn - Cadnam
Saturday 26th March
Following a trip to Southampton and on out way back to Bournemouth we stopped off at the Sir John Barleycorn.
The pub looks magnificent having recently had a new thatch. The welcome was warm from the team and the food and service excellent. We will definitely visit again during the summer to enjoy the beer garden.
Many thanks again for an excellent visit.

A group of eight of us had Friday lunch at the Sir John Barleycorn and all eight of us was hugely satisfied. Tony and team were very welcoming and the food was amazing! If we'd stayed there longer, I think we would have gone there for all our meals. Their garden looks gorgeous too for the summer. Thank you!
P. D.
Food here has always been consistently good the service is great and the location is perfect for a quick getaway. Garden is loveley in season and Sunday Roasts are perfect. Manager can be a little bit of a control freak but his wife more than makes up for it in calmness and charm
S. A.
Found this place off the off chance walking our dogs, great coffee and amazing service. Will definitely have to go back to to try something to eat as food smelt good
B. F.
Wow, lovely meal this evening, it seems to be getting back to the old days.
Great food excellent service.
Looking forward to going back once they have had the refurbishment and trying the new menu
Brilliant
A. W.
Friendly polite staff and wonderful food.

Lamb shank and Salomon meals were fabulous. Great looking building.

Have been coming here every few weeks for the past few months when meeting up with different people. Food always really tasty, great portions and they handle gf (coeliac) perfectly with plenty to choose from. Always welcoming staff, convenient location for those traveling from different directions. Look forward to my next visit.
J. L.
We have always loved this place just off the M27 ideal as a stopover after a long drive giving you a nice rest with a lovely meal to continue on your journey. A great menu with a varied choice to suit all.
B.
Can't really ask for anything more in terms of service & food quality! I even asked if service was definitely included on the bill!
We booked a table for 13 and owing to a freak accident on the A338 Only 7 of us showed up (1 of which was 1.5hrs late). Menzie, Tony & the team couldn't of been more accommodating!
Food was some of the best I've tasted ever (I had the seafood linguine)! Staff were so very attentive.
Thank you SJB!
A. W.
Great food and service. We use this venue in our family because it is half way between our home locations. We are all so pleased to have discovered this excellent venue.
c. b.
Wow wow wow.
The locals are extremely lucky to have this on their doorstep. We stopped by on a round trip from Essex- Bournemouth. We stopped here on our way back and boy was I a good decision.
The menu is very reasonably priced. But the food does not falter in this. I had the pate for Starr and the pie for main. The pate wad topped with a orange marmalade style jelly. The pate took on a note or 2 of this flavour and was sublime!!
The pie was stunning. Decorated with a cow silhouette in the pastry. This is the meal to end that long day!! The meat inside was so flavoursome and just fell apart in your mouth.
If you live close to this place I am extremely jealous!!
I had the same meal in a central London pub last week and did not match what we we served ay SJB. And we were obviously charged a lot more for the meal in london.
The garden! Spacious and very well maintained.
There just isn't a bad word to say about this place.
WELL DONE GUYS!!!
J. B.
Excellent service and good food. Lovely beer garden and interior
l. f.
We had a beautiful meal in the family and dog friendly pub. The staff were engaged and attentive. A lovely first time experience.
J. B.
Great Pub. Excellent Food. Friendly staff. Very welcoming Pub. Would highly recommend this pub to any who is in the area. 5*
D. Y.
Nicely decorated gastro pub, but only one chef when we visited so we couldn't get food
C. B.
Conveniently located, extremely friendly service with staff who were impressively quick.
Dinner was served 16mins after ordering which I would say is very appropriate despite being very busy.
Very well done, thank you.
S. S. (.
This is an absolutely fantastic pub. This is apparently the oldest pub in New Forest - built in the 12th century. Unfortunately only the Thatch roof remains but the interior has been completely changed as a result of modernisation.
The food was very good, portion sizes were generous and the prize was reasonable.
The service we received (we were a group of 8 people) from Alex was truly exceptional. He was friendly, helpful and informative. Thank you Alex, we will definitely be back to say hi to you. 👍🏾😊
L. H.
Lovely Sunday roast.
My family and I went for a Sunday roast last month and unfortunately didn't have the best experience due to the chef going home ill and leaving the pub understaffed. However, the next day we get a phone call from the pub apologising, putting their hands up and acknowledging the issue, and offering us a free meal for the family to show us what a proper Sir John Barleycorn experience is. Today we took them up on that offer and it was one of the best pub Sunday roasts we have had. Brilliant food and great service. They didn't have to be generous and do that, but they did, and for that we will definitely be going back and recommending.
I. P.
Polite, courteous and very friendly staff, good varied menu, Stake and Ale pie was excellent, as was the Linguine apparently.
Service was excellent.
Not cheap, but good value for good food and experience.
5 stars with no hesitation.
S. N.
Not bad. Service was not great and the food was ok, my friend enjoyed his. I'd probably find somewhere else to try next time I'm in that area. It seemed popular but unfortunately I wouldn't recommend.
J. C.
Quite possibly the best Sunday roast I've had at any pub or restaurant, been several times now and the quality is always consistent. Friendly staff and good beer too!
R. G.
Delicious Handmade Chips! Would definitely come again.
t.
If the food is as good as the Guinness, then i cant wait to try it.
Tony is is an excellent host from previous restaurants 👌
T. P.
Great meal and great venue!
Definitely recommend!
J. T.
Lovely place nice people. Just one thing tables were sticky although laid for a meal
L. M.
Great pub layout and decor. Great service from the young lady. Not so vegan friendly, didn't have many options and sad to see no vegan hot choc but I know it has changed owners. I was happy 😊 enough with my chips though as only wanted a snack.
G. C.
Staff very pleasant and efficient, food very good. Premises clean and nice decor.
A. W.
Excellent service, great food, good atmosphere. Little bit pricey!
C. Y.
Absolutely delicious steak and ale pie. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Great hosts
T. B.
Fabulous food. Burger was excellent and chips were amazing
B. P.
My wife and I used to visit this place regularly for lunch up to about 2 years ago the staff an food were excellent. After the lockdown we tried it again which was quite a bit of a let down, however, we did give it another try today at lunchtime and found a vast improvement from our last visit. There were 2 very polite and capable young ladies serving both drinks and food and doing an excellent job.The food we has improved considerably and prices on par for the area. The only downside was some bloke in a pair of shorts, presumably a manager of some sort bellowing across the pub to the 2 young ladies to move the patio heaters outside, the heaters appeared to be so heavy they could barely lift them. He should have shown more consideration and moved them himself.
C. B.
I hadn’t been to this pub for many years, but the new owners make you feel very welcome and the food is consistently very good. This is now my go to pub to visit.
a. m.
An enormous part of eating out is the atmosphere , service and of course, the food. We had a great lunch with the best of everything. The staff couldn't do enough to help us - they went the full monty! Would definitely come back for more!
K. O.
Very good upmarket pub food (chunky chips are highly recommended), really friendly staff (with a sense of humour) and in a convenient location just before you enter or leave the New Forest (ie has a phone signal)
A. H.
Helpful staff and good food. I would never have found this pub without my aunt who used to go there 20 years ago. She loved it then and loved it today.
S. M.
Have visited on a number of occasions for lunch when travelling from Dorset into London. Yesterday had the home made pie, chips and fresh vegetables. Excellent food and very tasty. Prices reasonable and fantastic hospitality. Will certainly visit again.
S. B.
This is the place to eat the service is superb and the food is delicious very enjoyable
M. R.
We enjoyed our meals and the staff were very helpful and friendly. Would visit again if in the area.
E. B.
What a joy this was! Super food, cooked well and so attractive. Service was really good, friendly and welcoming staff where nothing was too much trouble. Beer was good too! Wouldn't hesitate to go again and soon!
D. W.
Just decided we needed some food and turned in. Friendly staff and quick ordering, it was 12.35 on a Wednesday. Good menus and plenty to choose from. We both had pie of the day which was very nice with Mash and Vegetables. We had Tiramisu and Cheese Cake for desert.£50.00 which was in our view a little expensive but given the location my be ok. All round an enjoyable place to stop and eat inside or out.
P. S.
A real treat. Although we had to be seated outside things couldn't have been better... A special treat for 92 y/old Mum and grandma.
A large open sided marquee covered the tables.. The waiting staff were very helpful and offered blankets and hot water bottles if required... A fairly extensive menu considering the restrictions due to Covid... And all perfectly cooked and served...
This was our second visit to eat and just as good as the first. And definitely won't be the last..
Thank you so much for allowing us to cut our own birthday cake for our dessert too.
A. L.
very delicious food and great service ...hope refit goes well guys xx
G. P.
Nice local pub for me. Just a stones throw from my house 😀
I. O.
Hosted my 40th birthday celebration here. Food was exceptional and service was very friendly and efficient. We were really looked after. Highly recommend.
D. F.
A nice spot, with excellent ale, provided with charming and attentive service.
D. S.
Great food and menu with a friendly atmosphere.
C. J.
Called in for lunch and was very pleased with the Menu selection. Food was well presented and tasty. Service was competent although a little slow with ordering and clearing away tables. Staff friendly and helpful.
C. D.
We decided to try the SJB after not going for a while. The decor and pub are really good, nice atmosphere. The staff were lovely, but service was slow, there seemed to be a lot of staff but maybe trainees? Our meal was OK but not 'gastro-pub' standard. Our starter of salt and pepper squid was more of a crumble of tiny bits of squid and lots of little bits of batter at £8.50 it was not good. We did politely mention it when paying the bill and the waitress apologised, but it really should have been taken off or some other gesture? The mains were over-priced for what they were but tasty. Not quite there yet guys I'm afraid.
A. F.
Very good menu and atmosphere with great service .
E. G.
Been twice recently, good food both times, only 2 real ales
J. H.
Really nice, reasonably priced menu and a good garden for outdoor dining. Will be back.
N. D.
Only discovered this place because I broke down. The staff were very helpful and accommodating. They provided me with a charger for my phone, checked on me while waiting for recovery and brought me drinks. They have a great menu and lovely outdoor garden. If I'm ever back in the area I will make a point of going back.
J. S.
Service very slow, menu looks good but several of the choices we wanted were unavailable. Sirloin steak could have soled a pair of boots. I can't remember what I had so it can't have been very exciting or too awful.
T. S.
Nice friendly pub, good service. Good food, although the duck was slightly overcooked for my taste. Lovely location. Thoroughly enjoyed our visit and will come again. Thank you all!
P. M.
Good food and drinks with a friendly welcome.
R. F.
If your popping in for a drink after work, or going out for meal. This is the pub for you. The staff are all friendly and very helpful. The food is top notch as is the choice of beers
A. P.
Stopped off for lunch on our way to Poole, a very pretty bistro pub with a good menu, the halloumi fries were delicious, we shared them as a starter but wish we had had one each!
S. J.
Me and my wife pop out for a Drive in the beetle sunday just gone. And find this charming pub. What a lovey roast. With drink come to 40 pound. Nice to sit in the garden. Do recommend this pub to any one. 😀😀😀
M. H.
Excellent pub on the edge of the New Forest
Parking could be better
A. C.
Stopped for lunch on the way from Dorset. Excellent food, good vegetarian and pescatarian options and the kids loved it too. Would definitely come again.
a. c.
Great little gastro pub, friendly staff
s. r.
Great modern pub, hsb a bonus.
S. C.
Wonderful live music, fantastic atmosphere, incredible food and lovely staff. Our favourite place in the world
H.
Lovely friendly service and great food
P. P.
Lovely place had Sunday roast pork the food was good but dropped a star because there was more fat than pork with the slices, the veg and Yorkshire where ok
J. A.
Great food, great staff, exemplary service. Lovely vegetarian roast.
T. L.
The 2nd time, great food and value will see you again
Thank you 😊
J. P.
Great food, slow service
B. P.
I had a whole sea bream. It was gorgeous. A good selection of wine. Excellent service. Can't fault it.
S. S.
Excellent food, nice choices on menu, good service, friendly staff
S. W.
Very good. Quite a while since we have been there and think under new management. Cozy place, quite an extensive menu, food good - party of four and all had something different so not just good for some dishes. Reasonable portions and good service. Will return.
J. H.
Very good food although service was slow. Well it was Friday night before bank holiday weekend.
C. R.
What a superb place! Three- course lunch was just over £15 and you couldn't fault it. There is a more extensive menu but this was perfect for a lunch with old friends. John Barleycorn may have been a mythical figure, but the reality of this excellent pub is not to be missed. And before you ask, I have no connection to this business!
m. s.
What a beautiful place tucked out the way. Extremely friendly staff great food, didn't have to wait long for food....deserts to die for...Definitely worth a visit 😀😊🙂
T. B.
Lovely old pub situated mid way so ideal for a re-visit for a reunion with an old friend. The prawn dish from the main menu was absolutely delicious
, and the sea bass on crushed potatoes from today's specials was excellent. Now I'm going to have a moan, but not deduct stars as so many restaurants are guilty: why put balsamic vinegar onto the salad ingredients without checking when it's such an individual choice? DON'T DO IT please!!!!!!!!!!
A. M.
Great service and very good food reasonably priced will definitely go again
c. s.
Staff are lovely and the pub is beautifully designed, great outdoor space and atmosphere, lovely location with great food, highly recommend.
C. M.
Nice pub, good beer and banter.
L. G.
Lovely food, limited menu but told they are expanding it. It was a busy night but the staff coped well
I. W.
This isba well presented pub restaurant on the edge of the New Forest, 15 minutes from Eastleigh (Southampton) airport. We found great food, great staff and great value. Well worth visiting. The meals were perfectly cooked. Portions were of a good size. The staff were happy, friendly and helpful. Looking forward to visiting again.
A.
Had a delicious lunch, we had booked for 10 people, but ended up with 13, no problem, they just moved everything around. Lovely waitress, very helpful and chatty. We will definitely be back.
L. H.
Great food and lovely atmosphere!
J. P.
Delicious food and excellent service.
C. S.
Enjoyed a late lunch at this pub today. Fantastic service and food quality. Good value. Thoroughly recommended!
C. R.
Great food and brilliant environment. Customer service excellent too.
S. L.
Love eating here. Great all round pub. Excellent food in the restaurant too.
E. G.
Fabulous food, great service and very friendly staff! Would definitely recommend this charming pub.
H. R.
Often stop off here between our trips between Portsmouth and Poole. Did so today and enjoyed a Roast Beef dinner and Seafood and Spinach Rissotto followed my a portion of Sticky Toffee Pudding and pouring cream.
Staff always friendly and approachable. Reasonably priced and pub very tastefully decorated.
Really enjoy eating here.
V. G.
Good, well prepared and tasty food. We had a good lunchtime experience and would return.
J. C.
Wonderful helpful staff, heated up my baby's homemade food for us with out question after our car broke down up the road. Jess was particularly fantastic, kind and extremely considerate. Will definitely be going back. (But without breaking down this time hopefully)
J. B.
Very friendly staff, good food. Generally quite fast service too! Would recommend
P.
Only stopped for drinks service great
Didnt eat as found menu a little pricey and not many options
Pub please rethink menu 😁
G. M.
Sharer plates were lovely but 90p per slice of sausage definitely gave us a giggle
M. H.
Food very good but male member there needs to be a bit more welcoming otherwise the staff is very nice
N. L.
A lovely old English pub in a beautiful countryside setting, the food is great which means booking a table is a must! Also there's easy access for wheelchair users at the right hand side of the building.
M. B.
Very friendly, excellent food. Terrific service. Great value.
R. P.
Good food with a 'specials' board and wide selection of drinks. Fast service in very comfortable country pub. Alternatively you can eat outside in large garden with plenty of tables and large umbrellas. Have used many times and will continue to do so when in the area.
W. G.
Good food although service a bit slow but we will go back
A. H.
Lovely food, service and nice surroundings. 👌
a. r.
Hidden off the beaten track. This gem, just off the M27/A31 junction is a great find.
Nice big car park. Full I might add. Shows the great food it serves at lunch time.
Whole lunch menu at set prices are extremely reasonable. The staff friendly and attentive. Big thumbs up from us.
R. S.
Visited here earlier today (Friday 28-09) and I am appalled at the service by the two female servers. Repeatedly tried to get their attention but they were too busy chatting to each other to serve me. Only giving three stars as we were eventually served by the male waiter who was brilliant - thanks again blonde waiter!
k. t.
Excellent food. Great waitresses very friendly. Excellent front of house. 😃😃👍
R. P.
Nice, little, country village pub. Not exactly cheap but in today's market, just about bearable. Minimum card spend of £5.00, but change given. There appears to be enough seating and no doubt on a busy night, this could be tested? Free car park, but not exactly designed for disabled people if busy? I believe that the WiFi is also free. Reasonable choices of ales, including a nice HSB.
T. W.
Very welcoming staff.. Beautiful setting but is hard to find as the trees out on the main road cover the sign to turn left so you miss the turning. Food really lovely and good value.. Would highly recommend and will be visiting again soon xx
P. K.
Great service, good food and an updated garden with a new firepit make this ideal as we exit lockdown into some form of normality.
J. J.
We always go here for our family get together so, table one, is set away from the restaurant and is great for that purpose. Usually great, unfortunately the last time we visited, they were slightly stingy with the vegetables for the roast, which was disappointing considering the price.
s. m.
We attended for Sunday lunch. The soup was very good with croutons and a large slice of bread. However, the main course was poor. I had the chicken roast. The Yorkshire pudding was far too big, there was no stuffing, sausage or bread sauce and no leafy vegetable. The vegetables were under cooked and the potatoes were almost inedible. My husband had the liver which was of poor quality with sinews. The bill came to nearly £50 with one drink each, so we were disappointed.
T. T.
Lovely food every time i have been here. Good reliable staff and very friendly too. Ideal place to meet family for a catch up.
K. P.
Looks very nice, good food, but service was very slow despite having a lot of staff they where just behind the bar talking. Main took ages to come and we wanted a pudding but just left because of the time it took.
S. B.
Quiet on the night I visited, but nice little pub, didn't eat but everyone friendly & helpful
M. M.
Beautiful and atmospheric pub. Highly recommend for a nice relaxing drink and amazing nosh.
C. F.
Nice friendly pub, good food, nice staff, very nice inside. Well worth a visit.
C. E.
Lovely staff & food.
S. J.
Lovely pub, and lovely enjoyable food.
Would recommend this pub to anyone.. ❤
S. W.
Stopped here on way back from holiday, and had a lovely lunch. I had the ploughmans lunch and wife had steak sandwich. Both were excellent as was the service from the staff. Would recommend to everyone.
S. S.
One main course meal was cold when served, though fairly quickly replaced. After the mains were finished, nobody came to ask whether we wanted a dessert, so we left without having one.
A. G. W.
What a great night we had, great food and drinks but the best was the staff. Thanks a lot for everything Danielle, you superstar!
S.
A nice intimate pub, tucked just off j1 of the m27/a31.
Good selection of lagers, can't speak for much else as I was only here for about and hour. Quite nice for an evening out I'd expect
S. S.
Great food .Excellent service .Lovely staff looking after us !!
J. M.
Delicious meal
The chocolate mousse is to die for! The best I've ever tasted
E. P.
Drinks were nice didn't eat there but the food looked lovely also. Lovely atmosphere and family friendly. But most of all the staff were lovely and helpful
N. C.
Good food. Only trouble on Sunday, long wait of 50mins for a cold roast. No one seemed genuinely too concerned of the wait! Did get a new hot dinner, so not so bad.
S. C.
A good pub with pretty good food. The whitebait was undercooked but we enjoyed a very good shepherd's pie. Friendly service too. We'd go back.
P. Y.
Wonderful homely freshly cooked food, tentative service at a reasonable price.
S. H.
Lovely food with an open fire place. Only negative was that the smoke from the fire place was coming straight into the room rather than up the chimney. It also has free WiFi and a nice beer garden.
J. S.
Really nice meal, beef pie and risotto, and good service. Nice surroundings.
J. C.
Really nice plant based mushroom
Kiev. Really nice flavours and great sweet potato fries. :)
J. D.
Was good food except the Eton mess, 4 shards of meringue and a sundae dish full of cream cheese was not an Eton mess
J. A.
Good food and the beer (proper beer) is well kept.
F. N.
FRANK NEWCASTLE (Author) – I visited the Sir John Barleycorn with a friend. The place looked great – thatched roof and all. The pub had been modernised and it looked clean and nice inside. The food was excellent and the service good. The setting is great – the beautiful New Forest.
P. W.
A nice place but clearly more of a restaurant than pub. Went just for drinks around 10 on a Wednesday night and the place was empty and they were about to cash up! Will probably revisit for food sometime...
C. L.
Delicious food, generous portions, lovely outside area
D. B.
The bar was not the most inviting but in contrast the restaurant was cosy and with a pleasant ambience. Food was excellent and reasonable price and staff pleasant and helpful.
No pressure to vacate the table which was particularly good
L. V.
Never had a bad meal here. Always excellent and service is great too.
F. V.
Really nice food and friendly staff. Lovely garden
M. H.
Friendly staff and a lovely pub. A good amount of seating. Parking could be an issue on busier days, however I'm unfamiliar with the area and there may be more close by?
S. R.
Pleasant suroundings. Staff helpful and good quality food.
J. R.
Great tasting fresh food and great service couldn't ask for more
J. G.
Great food and atmosphere
Would highly recommend a visit
M. M.
Didn't stop for food, just a drink. Menu was very extensive but nothing that took my fancy and a bit expensive for food. Cider was nice and nice looking inside with free parking.
M. B.
Excellent food, you must stop there.
A. P.
I've never been in the place I was caught in the big freeze of march 2018 and we have to be parked almost opposite the establishment so unfortunately I cannot comment. however the outside looks very nice very inviting.
C. H.
First time visiting, very friendly staff and food was amazing
J. D.

Family lunch on a Saturday. Busy but food & service was good. (Would have had 5 stars if they would repair the potholes in the car park.)
M. M.
Lovely, "olde worlde" English pub, (low beams, open fires etc.) conveniently located just off Jct 1 of the M27, and within easy reach of Lyndhurst and the northern & westerly reaches of the New Forest.
P. T.
Dropped in for a quick Sunday lunch, really good service, quick with the food and it was really nice. Would definately recommend this pub.
T. V.
Great food and good friendly service. Lunch time menu was very good value.
J. B.

Stylized spit and sawdust place but done very well. Good food and generous portions. Would happily use again when in the area.

I've never been in the place I was caught in the big freeze of march 2018 and we have to be parked almost opposite the establishment so unfortunately I cannot comment. however the outside looks very nice very inviting.

FRANK NEWCASTLE (Author) – I visited the Sir John Barleycorn with a friend. The place looked great – thatched roof and all. The pub had been modernised and it looked clean and nice inside. The food was excellent and the service good. The setting is great – the beautiful New Forest.

One main course meal was cold when served, though fairly quickly replaced. After the mains were finished, nobody came to ask whether we wanted a dessert, so we left without having one.
