First night fancied something simple a basket meal £6.50 good quality nice beer and our black dog felt very at home. Went back a second night ate off the main menu again lovely meal

Cracking pit stop here the other night while out riding the back roads of Hampshire Great staff and service along with some really tasty food. We tried the £6.50 food in a basket deals and were not disappointed, pint and a meal in comfortable surroundings for a tenner a head! A weekend ride is now in the planning to partake in one of their Sunday Roasts 😉 Although for the 3 course roast you will have to fork out £20.00, never paid that much for a pub roast before in my life so expectations are high....

Took my mum and mum in law for dinner today, had a lovely meal. Very tasty and well presented. My mum in law was taken ill and the staff were super attentive offering as much help as needed. Would definitely recommend here, we will be coming back

A great little pub. The staff were full of enthusiasm and I was greeted with a huge smile. The food was really tasty and served promptly. The price provided good value. The atmosphere was friendly - clearly a favourite with locals and passing travellers alike. There's plenty of parking to the side of the pub; with disabled parking near the front door. The pub offers food in the bar or in a restaurant area at the back. Overall a good pub.

Good atmosphere - cosy welcoming place. Food good. Staff friendly. The only downside was that the food took a bit longer to arrive than was comfortable - 45 -50 minutes. They were clearly short staffed. Booked for 12 noon, food arrived by c. 12.50pm and by this time the pub was quite busy. Visited on 8/12/2021.

The food was good, and the staff friendly and helpful. Had to wait a bit because they're a bit short staffed, but the waitress brought some crusty bread when the wait for the main course dragged out. The bar seating area looks just as well appointed as the much larger restaurant, which is down some steps and is not dog friendly.

Lovely Sunday roast dinner. 2 courses for £14.95 or 3 courses for £17.95. The portion was generous, loads of beef on my plate. Veg was cooked well, everything tasted great. Soft drinks were way to expensive in my opinion. £3.10 for a large coke or Diet Coke! Pub was clean and had a nice atmosphere. Staff were friendly, will definitely visit again for a Sunday roast.

I came for an evening meal with a colleague whilst on a business trip - the food was really lovely, simple but varied menu and cooked really well. The staff were really welcoming, friendly and efficient. A good mix of couple, families and others, all seemed really happy and well looked after. Nice location, but road noise can spoil the pleasure of al fresco dining. Menu looks like it offers plenty of choices, portions look like great value for your money. Very tiny seating area for non eating clients, but they do try to accommodate you. The table layout could do with redesigning, there is absolutely NO room for a intimate dining experience. Not cheap, but acceptable. Not the greatest choices for beers, ciders and lagers. Free parking, free WiFi, friendly staff.

Lovely olde worlde pub, says it's in Waltham Chase but TripAdvisor says Shensfield so be careful, we almost drove past due to lack of reviews by looking for Black Dog in Waltham. Glad we didn't! Huge outside covered terrace or garden, enclosed smoker's section where you can also eat under cover but with opening one side plus heaters. Good food, looking forward to visiting for Sunday lunch when pub fully open after COVID restrictions lifted. Warning: this pub is VERY popular so do book ahead!

Came for my partners birthday celebrations with family, so glad Ray and Elaine invited us cos I have to say I ate the Moules Mariniere and my tastebuds exploded! The flavours of the sauce were outstanding and the quality of the mussels were amazing. The best I’ve had. All the other meals were also top quality. My partners rump steak was cooked to perfection and tender and so tasty, even the chips were fluffy and crunchy. The service was also wonderful the ladies were attentive and very friendly. Already looking forward to our next meal.

Quietly disappointed with the food, had seen so many reviews and looked amazing Sunday roast was very disappointing cold potatoes not very much on the plate for the money in comparison to other local pubs. But the pub itself is stunning and cosy, so maybe worth going back for another meal, may pie and mash as they have won so many certificates for this?

Fantastic! This was the final destination at the end of our classic car club drive today. Great food, great drink and great staff. The place very busy. We had 2 big tables reserved. Battled the m27 closure to get to the black dog today and it was well worth it! The atmosphere was delightful, we were welcomed instantly and although we hadn't booked we were seated straight away. Our waitress was a lovely young girl who was attentive from start to finish.. unfortunately I didn't get her name but her tip was well deserved. We chose the 2 course option and both courses were amazing.. the slow cooked beef especially was heavenly... Can't recommend the black dog enough.. great place.. great food and lovely staff!!

I took some business colleagues to the pub for our annual get together and as usual our evening was most enjoyable. The beer was up to it's normal high standard and the service was faultless. Our food was delivered to the lovely beer garden. The Beef Stroganoff has a reputation amongst diners here and it didn't disappoint.The beef was tender and the sauce delicious. My guest enjoyed a generous portion of mussels which he described as plump,thick and creamy. We were all impressed by the whole dining experience and will be certain to return

Eaten here a few times. Food is always fantastic. Yesterday's Sunday roast was the same. Service was good taking order and the food came quickly. Unfortunately it took an age to clear plates and the requested bill had still not arrived 20 mins after being requested. Appreciate as it was busy mistakes happen and the girl probably just forgot. Slightly marred an otherwise excellent meal. Sure this was just a blip and I' d still go back.

The best Sunday dinners!! We go here frequently for a Sunday, the food is lovely and the pub is dog friendly in the bar and gardens. There is a large outside area which has lawn with lots of seating. There is also a covered area with seating too outside. There is some wooden kids play equipment but it could do with updating if I'm honest as it is looking a bit tired. In the summer they have a bouncy castle in the garden for the kids.

The roast is very good value for money but my Yorkshire pudding was burnt. There were two big tables in so it was very noisy but that's more by chance, we have been before and it's been much more relaxing. It's child friendly. The dessert was supposed to be crumble but there was a tiny bit of what seemed like crumble but not what I expected. I wouldn't pay for that separately at £5 if I had to but as part of the 2 for £12 I didn't think it was worth complaining. The staff are very friendly and accommodating. The toilets could do with a face lift.

Absolutley great value for money! We live a short distance from The Black Dog and have eaten here on a fair few occasionans, a mid-week lunch, a couple of Burgers and Roast's. If you order the burger from the main menu than the flavour of the burger is always changing which we love! We have never been disapointed, the service is always really friendly. And the beer festivals are great fun in the summer and well organised. I love the fact there is a bouncy castle there for the children on Sundays and the garden is huge with plenty of sunshine. Unfortunatly there are some incredibly high priced pub's in the area, it is so refreshing to see The Black Dog keeping it simple, cosy and affordable pub grub.

Had a 60th BBQ party planned at the Black Dog yesterday. Unfortunately due to weather, it had to be abandoned into indoors. Peter the landlord was amazing. He let us use the restaurant & move his customers who booked into the bar. He helped us set up. The food was amazing. We had a fantastic time with memories to treasure forever. It was very special. The restaurant service was good but the food was not quite up to that we had enjoyed before. Prawn cocktails were not value for the price charged, chips were very poor quality and onion rings over cooked. The wine was excellent. It must be difficult to keep up standards constantly.
