Reviews of The Lord Nelson
What a great name for a Pub! 🏴
This famous national hero deserves all the praise for what he did for our great nation.
What better way the to have a pint a raise a glass!
A traditional style pub with good staff, beer choices and food. Outside seating is with a nice view of Southampton Water.
We ended up in Hythe on a unintended visit. After a stroll along the pier we found the Nelson and had a lovely lunch which was good - the only downside was the constant smell of cigarette smoke blowing in from the outside.
Had a chicken roast dinner lunch....excellent value for money...on parr with one of the best roast dinners ever eaten. Chicken, roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese, carrots, cabbage, corn, Yorkshire pudding, stuffing and Gravy....excellent...good COVID coverage...has to be visited if in the area.
I loved this place. Three tiny bars at the front and a much larger room at the back. The small bars are really cosy. Enjoyed some real ale and appreciated the friendly staff.
Yes, we used to live in Hythe, and often come back. We came in for a drink, and there was a nice, friendly atmosphere. Prices were fair, and we'll be back soon.
Nice clean place, plenty of atmosphere and good food. Will visit again
Always a friendly welcome, location perfect. Food Good.
Great location, nice interior and good local beer (Ringwood) but lunch was tasteless and fish cakes tasted more like potatoes than fish.
Fantastic pint and at a reasonable price n nice n friendly staff
Rocking Pub on a Saturday night ,live music and good age mix of happy customers
A pub for locals i think. Noisy on Christmas eve. A good outside space. I'd go there again. I didn't enjoy the Blitzen bitter.
The roast dinners are to die for the best. Very friendly staff and they have my husbands favourite Doom Bar .
Good Atmosphere just love the pub we have been going for many years.
Nice spacious local bar in centre of town, they make people coming into town very welcome. Good if you wanting to watch live Sports events, the place to go in Hythe for great social evening Friday and Saturday, or Sunday afternoon Premiership Football.
Two superb takeaway lunches and desserts today were excellent and very good value for money. Many thanks, Ken & Ginny.
Lovely food especially Sunday roast 😋
Plenty of staff serving and great live music .
Nice very friendly pub by Hythe Pier. Enjoyed having a pub lunch in the garden overlooking Southampton Water.
Great pub, with good food. Friendly welcoming staff. Loved by locals and visitors to the area.
Very nice pub , music, tears, and beer
Friendly staff and excellent beer!👍
Good place for real ale most of the time, one visit they only had one
Lovely pub, friendly staff and not a bad experience in site... it's an enjoyable place to have quick drink with friends or family with an amazing outdoor seating area and dining needs.
Foods great and tastes amazing, would definitely recommend this pup to a visitor to hythe or a resident that is looking for a new place for a quick drink.
Local pub outside bit at the back very roomy and leads onto the promenade. friendly staff and good atmosphere
Food was very good. Big helpings. Fresh and hot. Highly recommended.
Didn't like the covid screens on the bar. Unable to see each others faces.
Shame the pub isn't nearer to our home in Salisbury.
Times have changed with covid-19 but the Nelly is trying hard to still give you good times and good drinks in a safe environment.
The toilets are a bit tight so common sense and respect for social distancing is crucial, we all need to do our bit to keep pubs open and viable as a businesses. Good luck and I will be back.
Ok nice pub, good atmosphere. Good beer and plenty of places to sit. Back garden with views over Southampton waters.
However if your looking for a quite drink then maybe best to avoid, weekends the music is up high, is very random and probably not to everyone's liking. The staff are dutiful and polite but would not look to displaced in an episode of Gavin and Stacy.
Good pub for drink and a laugh but would recommend other places for a first date.
We stop by the Nelson most Friday's after work for an hour or two, this pub is a nice place to unwind and watch the cruise ships go out. At around 5pm they could do with some extra help as the service is a little slow until the evening staff start. The bar staff are very good at their jobs and very friendly. The pub in general is tidy and well kept apart from The men's toilets are a little grim and sometimes swimming in pee.
Not a bad place
Cheers
Friendly and professional staff. Been over 46 years since my last visit. Changed a lot but very tastefully done. Excellent food at reasonable prices. Well worth a visit. Covid-19 guidance followed well.
Good old fashioned pub service was good the food was great and cheap in price.not to busy walked in without booking and was given a table straight away on a sunday as well
Lovely pub in a great location. Friendly staff and honest pub grub. Quirky little nooks to have a quiet drink or enjoy the views of Southampton water from the beer garden
Warm welcome friendly staff and lovely food.
Like this pub, really traditional. Has a few different rooms plus some lovely outside space overlooking the river. Very good COVID measures in place.
A straightforward british pub. Beer selection is ok, hand pumped ales are available and well kept. Varied staff are friendly and service generally good. 4 bars, each with its own character, menu covers pub grub and delivers a favourable version of it. Overall worth a visit, weekdays if you prefer it pleasingly calm or weekends if you like a more energetic atmosphere!
TBH, I'd say closer to 3.5.
I'm going to focus on the negatives first.
1. Lack of choice on the menu - this place should consider itself lucky that there's no real competition in the budget market in Hythe, particularly in the evenings (even though I was on an afternoon visit). There is a lot for kids to choose from, but for adults, the choice was very limited and basic. The presentation wasn't great either.
2. The furniture wasn't in great condition, a lot of wear and tear, particularly on the floor.
3. Disability access is generally ok and they have good access to the toilet, but I wasn't impressed that they sat us on top of a step, especially as they saw my Grandmother couldn't walk very far and uses a scooter to get around.
4. The mens toilets are very similar to the layout you would expect to find in the USA. If you're using a cubicle rather than a urinal, there are big gaps above and under the main part of the door, leaving you with a lack of privacy.
THAT SAID
The food and the service was quick and great. The meals are definitely NOT like a Wetherspoon and are prepared using real quality ingredients, rather than the microwave rubbish Wetherspoon opt to use. Prices are fair and the managers are extremely caring and friendly. It's a very relaxed atmosphere, but being outside of the city (albeit still not that far), it works and suits this establishment well. Ideally located, and if you're an adult who fancies acting a bit younger and wants a child's meal, they will make a larger portion size!
If you work on points 1,2 and 4 in particular of my negative critiques, then I see no reason why this place won't do even better in the future. Keep up the good work!
Lovely place to have a beer and chill. Outside under cover with heaters.
Sensible prices and friendly staff
Long passed its heyday, the glory days have gone maybe for the better (old days it was easier to piss on the high st than try & get to the toilets). Love the front bars on a Friday Saturday & Sunday genuine bunch of locals. Steer clear of the modern back bar full of nons!!
One of the original houses of the Georgian town turned into a pub. When you walk through the door there are thr original very tiny rooms with a bar in each. What used to be the cellar and storage is now a larger room also with bar for functions and kitchens. In the old part of the pub take away the televisions on the wall and you are transported back to the 18th century.
A large selection of keg beers and real ales and the food is good too. Well worth a visit.
Great landlady and bar team.
Busy late at night and has Ringwood beer on draft
Really great pub, just moved to the local area, first visit of many. Very welcoming and felt very safe with the Covid restrictions in place.
Went in for lunch on the day of visiting the local town, Hythe. It was not busy. However after ordering food, were left waiting for a long time, more than 30mins. While waiting, saw a notice of recruitment of a cook. That explained the long wait. The present assistant had to deal with the orders. When lunch was served, it was hot and fresh.
If Carlsberg did pubs... it would probably be the best pub in Hythe. Loads of room, shows sports and a nice beer garden. what more could you ask for.
Good food have to come back again came in the middle of the day
Bit of a basic pub hence the three stars but the real ale was in perfect condition. Perhaps I should give more stars because pubs are about beer and these guys know how to look after it.
Great character pub - pleasant staff - many cosy areas to drink like the 'snug' ( or poop deck) - but quite ' wiffy' loos - especially the gents - adjacent to the ' ladies' 😏😏
Even though there was a wake in the rear of the pub, we were still able to have lunch which was lovely. A very clean, cosy pub with a great atmosphere.
Lovey friendly pub we called into for a drink after a family meal nearby. Lady who served us was very welcoming & friendly.
Nice Guinness
Called in with no expectations. The fish and chips was one of the best I've ever had. They also had an excellent Ringwood 49er on draft.
Sky Sports & BT Sport. Good food menu and reasonably priced. Excellent views of the cruise ships going in and out of Southampton from the beer garden.
Lovely freindly staff in a lovely location enjoyed a ham salad sandwich even though I arrived just after food was being served thank you for being so accommodating 😁
Beers are abit flat.
Has no pretensions of being a gastropub so was not expecting much but this turned out to be a very tasty chicken pie, served with brilliant fresh vegetables. Friendly staff and great value too.
Fantastic location with views out to the Solent. Staff very cheerful & great hospitality. Food was very good and good value. Will definitely visit when visiting this area again.
