Reviews of The Old Ship
R. J.
Lovely pub with friendly staff. Food portions are massive and are great value for money. I had the fish fingers wrap with a side of some of the most amazing chips I've had. My partner had the cajun chicken which was flavourful and cooked perfectly. However I just wished they grilled my wrap as it was rather plain and the side of salad it came with could've used some sort of light dressing for added flavour. Overall, this pub is highly recommended and we will surely visit again.

Went here Monday just gone and we thought we’d go somewhere different and a little change of scenery and we were very impressed with the quality of the food here and the portions are really decent as well. Everything was all up to standard. My misses pointed out to the waitress/bartender just as we asked for the bill to say how amazing the food was. We will come back again ☺️

Great food, fantastic portions for price, dog friendly, great decor. bar lady was a bit abrupt but happy to help with a food allergy.
R. P.
Great pub/restaurant with good parking and a garden. Beautiful old world interior with lots of nautical themed curios. Super friendly and helpful staff... highly recommended.

There's a sign in this pub above the steps leading down into one of the small bar seating areas. It's perhaps one of the few signs in the world that needs its own sign telling you, to read the sign. This occurred to me as a few feet from us, apparently the 4th person that evening banged their head on the, "Please mind your head" sign, so the flabbergasted lady behind the bar told me. Anyway, this is a quirky pub that from the outside seems like your standard, fairly inviting pub, but once inside, its nautical themed décor and old oak beams give it a nice oldy-worldy feel with a few sizable tables to sit at. Although from the seemingly slightly undersized bar area, you can see down a small flight of steps into a snug with leather armchairs and a real log fire, all helping to continue the traditional feel of this Tudor boozer. Beyond that is another small passage. This is where it gets weird because if you pass through here, you'll come to another smallish seating area, which is fine so far but then head towards the light of the next passage and you'll find yourself in a large open dining area that looks like something not too dissimilar to a Harvester. It's all part of the same pub, you may need to convince yourself, but this is where many come to dine giving you almost a drinks area and a restaurant area of the whole establishment. Not that it's the case but it just feels that way.
Anyway...drinks prices are reasonable, car park is the right size, toilets are clean. Not sure what the food is like as we only had drinks but by all accounts, it seems OK and I can't tell you much about the outside seating area as we went during a dark winter's evening.
So, if you like beer, food and ships and stuff, you’ll enjoy it here. Although, if you're more than 5 foot 9 inches, be sure not to regret ignoring the sign about knocking yourself out on a 500-year-old oak beam.

7 of us had a meal there this evening. Lovely food that was really priced and good portions, quick service and all came out hot and at the same time. Staff were really lovely and accommodating. Even with our birthday cake. Would definitely come back. Thank you.
J. S.
Food and decor was really nice, we really enjoyed ourselves but a little bit over priced. Location fantastic right next the the river so good end to a nice paddle boarding afternoon.
S. “. M.
Very friendly place to eat. Staff were very efficient and very friendly. Food was lovely. Service was fast. Felt at ease sitting there even after we had finished eating not like some places that hurry you out. Will definatly go back again
D. B.
Been coming here for 10years now.
Never had a bad visit.
All food has been excellent.
The chicken Royale sandwich is epic.
In those ten years, prices have almost doubled.
:(
Love it though.
B. B.
Went here for a meal with a visiting family member, from the outside it doesn't look anything special, maybe a little run down but once you go it's a different story.
The decor inside is very fitting of the name, sea maps used as wallpaper, blues for the paint just a very nice atmosphere.
Then you get to the food. The food was incredible, good portions and great quality food, my only complaint would be the food portions for a kid were huge but can you really call that a complaint??
Hoping to go back soon!!
T. R.
Basing this on a first visit only, it was great. We visited during the day, easy parking, staff were very polite, friendly and efficient, and the "pub grub" was tasty and fair value. There was nothing to mark it down on for us.
M. H.
Always 1st class food and service and perfect after a paddle on the river 😁
s. b.
Always a good pint, lovely service. Had a chicken royale sandwich, initially thought it was a bit pricey but Wasa really good sandwich with a decent size of portion of good chips. Well worth a visit.
G. H.
Food was ok, didnt live up to the hype Id say. Premium largers being poured in worn widget glasses making them appear flat, hit and miss on a decent pint. Offending glasses should be replaced with new but they just go back in the dishwasher for the next customer.
W. M.
Loads of places to sit outside as well as in. Lovely food. Fantastic service and fabulous bar staff. What more do you need?
L. G.
Excellent food, delicious & home made!
Great service and a lovely atmosphere.
Highly recommended
L. C.
We came here on Christmas Eve and it was absolutely lovely. We booked around a week before coming, the staff are very welcoming and friendly, the food is absolutely delicious and very generous portion sizes (would recommend the fish finger sandwich, it will not disappoint). A nice menu selection and drink selection, we moved to the area here around 5 years ago and only popped in a few times but this will definitely be our new local! Highly recommended and thoroughly looking forward to this place reopening again to enjoy a bite to eat and alcoholic beverage. The place is also nicely decorated and great atmosphere.
B. G.
A beautiful old pub with lots of original features, the building and grounds and lovely. Staff are friendly and very good at their job. The choice of food is small but very well done, I've never had a bad meal here and whenever I'm in the area a visit to the old ship is always a treat. Highly recommend the fish and chips, the burgers and the amazing doorstop sandwiches!
K. F.
Traditional pub food, good quality, reasonably priced and generous portions. Would definitely go back.
r. r.
Been here many times , lovely old pub on the Hamble river. Great food and friendly staff
D. L.
Great Father's Day afternoon. When I rang to book, they told me they had 2 sittings: 12 or 3pm. We went for 3pm. The pub was not crowded but enough people so it didn't feel deserted. The food was top quality: roasts, steak, lasagne. The service was efficient and friendly without being over-bearing. The nautical theme and dark wood make for an atmospheric ambience. Definitely recommend!
A. R.
Friendly staff, nice ales (meantime) on tap and a very tasty fish-finger wrap! Plenty of seating space inside.
J. F.
Lovely old world pub low ceilings original brickwork. Fantastic food and very good service.
S. B.
Really nice, well cooked, meal. Lovely old building. No noisy music but lovely staff who don’t keep bothering you. We will return.
A. H.
Lovely environment, I am 6ft 4 and had some issues getting round. It is not a place designed for anyone that is taller!
The cake I had was delicious!
R. C.
Good parking availability and pub surrounded by beautiful cared for hanging baskets. Covid measures still active to a limited amount. Plentiful seating on various levels with an order at the bar service. The menu was good and varied. We both settled on the full sized lasagna which was both very well presented with salad and garlic bread, the dish was delicious and home made but we could in retrospect got away with the smaller portion, however no regrets as it was so good. The service was quick and the staff friendly and helpful.
L. H.
Lovely hearty food, good portions for the money & always friendly staff & good wait times. Pleasant atmosphere the open fire is wonderful.
K. R.
Great place to go for a meal. Food was amazing
The staff were amazing.
I love the old building
And the history.
worth the money.
Its definitely worth going.
I would rate this place a 10 star if I could.
The staff were so helpful polite and friendly they make you feel comfortable.
P. S.
Great place with lots of little rooms you can hide in. Good beer. Nice friendly atmosphere.
G.
Great little pub with an excellent choice of draught beers (I recommend the HSB bitter). Interesting choice of speciality gins. Food menu is extensive, supported by many daily specials. Friendly and efficient customer service. Large carpark. Sheltered patio with picturesque hanging baskets. Large beer garden.
Complimentary WiFi.
O. K.
Great food! Best roast I've had out in a long time.
S. W.
Very friendly service, food is great too. They didn't mind our streaming England opener against Croatia either!
L. G.
Lovely old pub, nice polite helpful staff, and serves really tasty food
I. A. (.
The Old Ship Inn is definitely my favorite place to go for dinner! The food is absolutely delicious and the staff and kind and helpful. I absolutely love it there 😍.
O. K.
Amazing food. Nicest roast I've ever had in a pub.
J.
Pleasantly surprised. Good menu, nice food and friendly service
C. V.
Average pub food, average quality, average staff,be careful if you don't specify size of portion you get large !!.at large price.
J. D.
Great food, quick service and happily accommodated our paddle boards.
S. S.
Such a welcoming place. Lovely setting great food and good value All staff very helpful. Catered well for a family occasion especially as guest were running late.
H. S.
Traditional British pub, lovely old building, decent beer and classic pub food. The food was fast, hot, tasty and large portions so absolutely no complaints. This isn’t a fancy gastro pub it’s good honest food in a nice environment and I definitely recommend it.
R. C.
Warm and friendly welcome. Well seated tables with were very clean. Comprehensive menu. We had the lasagna (large) with salad and garlic bread. Could have got away with the small version. Service was swift and parking was not an issue.
P. S. (.
Great meal. It may have been the company but the place did nothing to detract.
M.
Nice friendly service in a old cosy pub feeling venue. Today was a flying visit unfortunately. Next time will be a hot chocolate by the fire. Cheers guys.
I. M.
I have visited this pub for more than 50 years and always enjoyed the maritime theme. It has been extended over the years and has managed to preserve and maintain this theme. Good beer selection and reasonable food.
T. W.
A great old fashioned pub with a traditional appeal that doesn’t have a copy & paste feel akin to most other places in recent times.
S. P.
Had an excellent meal. Drinks a bit expensive. Plenty of room inside.
I. W.
What a wonderful place. Great beer, friendly and helpful staff. Best onion rings ever. Will be back again for sure.
A. W.
An OK pub, very dark in side due to the age of the wood. Could do with furniture upgrade and carpets.
T. E.
Visited The Old Ship this evening with my partner and what a wonderful experience, the staff was outstanding, kind, polite, helpful, cheerful and nothing was to much trouble.
The food was delicious and could not ask for better, its definitely worth the money.
It was very clean, social distancing and face masks were allways in place and hand sanatizer was placed around in places thought out.
We will 100% be returning in the future thank you for such a great evening.
A. l.
Great place with good beer and food, just back from the water.
E. K.
We ordered cheese burger and it was massive. Really good meat and beautyfully grilled.
A. S.
Excellent food, excellent service and nice atmosphere
A.
Lovely pub and friendly staff. We went for a quick beer after a walk along the shore so didnt order food.
Surprisingly limited choice of beers the price for a lemonade and lime was a bit steep
£3.25 for a pint of lemonade
£1.15 for a shot of lime.
This is only a few pence cheaper than a pint of beer.
P. J.
Great food, nice atmosphere, would prefer table service
J. H.
Always friendly staff. The food is good home cooked fare. The sandwiches are particularly good, Cajun chicken was my favourite. Discontinued now... Trying to find a new favourite.
Although the beer selection is small, it is still a good selection.
G.
Lovely pub. Really friendly staff. Didn't book just turned up and they found us a table. Good selection of drinks, menu looked good (only had a bowl of chip still very nice).Dog friendly and all in all had a nice time. Deffently go back again.
R. S.
A great feel pub, unfortunately had already eaten but looking at the lunch food coming out looked absolutely awesome.
Just stopped of for "a pint" (😉), the London Pride was excellent just had to have another.
R. W.
Lovely place for a meal. Large portions! And very good food.
D. D.
Friendly service from the moment we walked through the door.
Food portions are very generous, well priced ans tasty. I will definitely go again.
J. F.
Very quaint place and fantastic food and service.
S. G.
The food was lovely and fresh and well presented, we had the small portion scampi which was ample for my friend and I ,would thoroughly recommend it. Old fashioned looking pub, clean brass shining everywhere.
N. H.
Beautiful old pub with lovely real wood fire. They serve food and the premises are kept clean. Low beams in some areas.
M. P.
Friendly helpful lovely food small appetite was plenty at lunch time. 😀
Q. W.
V busy, which was nice to see, we got a table near the fire which was lovely
S. 8.
A lovely little pub down by the River Hamble. Loses a star because in my opinion, the food is overpriced for what it is.
L.
We stopped in here after a walk and wow such a lovely pub, the staff were fantastic. The service was quick and the food looked amazing Next time we go for a walk along the shore we will definitely stop here again and this time have food as we were jealous of the other customers eating.
D. M.
We love The Old Ship! The food is always amazing and the staff are super friendly and professional. We’ve stopped going to other places as we know it can’t be beaten on quality pub food. Thanks again, we had another beautiful roast this evening.
A. C.
We often pop in for a quick drink and we have eaten in here on many occasions and the food is great and the staff always friendly
T. C.
Opened at 6pm this evening. Service was abit slow to start with, but young staff soon got up to speed. Although we didn't eat, the food coming out of the kitchen looked really nice. Pleasant atmosphere. Highly recommend.
J. B.
A lovely old pub. It was nice to see a pub adhering to social distancing. Hand sanitizer at the door that people where actually using. Tables kept apart and a 1 way system. Everyone was doing what was be asked. Food was good, service was excellent. Until we got to dessert.....when we all confused the hell out of our poor waitress....Sorry 😁
Will definitely go back and try some more dishes on the menu
C. B.
Good selection of food and big portions, plus it's reasonably priced too.
A. “. D.
Excellent service and food
Went for a small portion scampi and chips. A very good size not small for me. Served with peas and salad. Great tasting coffees with side biscuit.
Service was very friendly and super efficient. Place was spotlessly clean
Excellent
S. D.
Food a little bit pricey but you get what you pay for - really tasty, well presented and plenty of it. Staff friendly and helpful, only downside, sticky tables!
A. J.
Our favourite go to place at lunch (pre covid!). Have always really enjoyed the food, felt welcome and safe with excellent value and friendly staff. The cajun chicken baguette/wrap is the die for, best flame grilled cajun chicken I have ever had! As soon as the pubs can open again we will be back!
N. B. K.
Amazing food and service, enjoyed it. The fish was very fresh, well seasoned and one of the best fish and chips we've tasted. The chicken stir fry was very nice too.
A must visit pub for it's food, service and old ship ambience.
K. A.
Lovely food and super staff...close enough to the water for a dip too...
K. J.
Lovely little 16th century pub. 😍
R. M.
Great traditional pub with lots of cosy areas in the old parts and more open and modern in the newer part. We keep coming back for the 'real' food and hearty portions. There's a brilliant choice and it often surprises. The Crispy Beef Oriental Salad is gorgeous (it's hot by the way - not spicy hot). Also must mention the staff who are always happy and helpful.
N. A.
Been going here for years. Every year we have our Christmas do there as well. The food is always good and homemade. Service is always friendly. So much nicer compared to anything you'd get in a chain pub.
S. W.
We come here every year for our works Christmas do and the staff are always friendly and efficient and never fail to produce a really great meal. The roast turkey meal was a large portion of meat, roast potatoes, pigs in blankets and loads of veg and gravy. A good selection of beers too including a very drinkable 0% lager for those of us who were driving. Happy Christmas!
D. C.
Great food and service, thank you
C. S.
Great pub, been a couple of times, haven't tried the food yet but saw portions coming out and looks great size and quality, Guinness was very nice and matez said the ale was great. Friendly staff and good social distancing was observed.
M. L.
Lunch was an distinctly average affair. Vegetarians should be aware that potatoes are cooked in Goose fat. I had the macaroni cheese which was a bit bland but not unpleasant. The salad had far mow onion than any sane person could want. I have had better for less. The service was fine.
i. n.
Lovely pub, well dated to give the impression of stepping back in time. Food looks tasty and the selection of drinks while not extensive is adequate. Was not super busy when I went but was lively. Would go again.
T. F. J.
Have been going here for family meals for years and it's been consistently great. The portions are huge and the food is of the best homemade pub grub quality. The service is fantastic too - quick, friendly and all reasonably priced
M. W.
Had a break in Swanwick for a few days went to The Old Ship a few times whilst there. Food very good, served in good time, courteous staff, and even tried the takeaway service, which was excellent. Small portions a bonus for small appetites.
B. A.
Couldn't fault the staff or the food. Very friendly welcoming team and the food great. Steak and Guinness pie is a must. So stuffed due to portion size we couldn't manage pudding! Also dog friendly which was a huge bonus for us.
S. y.
The food is amazing and the staff are so lovely and welcoming
J. W.
Staff were amazing, friendly and truly professional. Lovely food and atmosphere given the circumstances!
A. C.
Nice snack with a pint in the sunshine ☀️
M. F.
Had a very tasty meal
P. P.
Fantastic meal at The Old Ship yesterday afternoon. Were welcomed politely and promptly by the team. Great food and clearly took sanitising and general cleanliness very seriously. Massive thumbs up and well done 👍🏻👏🏻
M. J.
I really enjoy visiting this pub. The food is always freshly prepared and the staff are so eager to please.
I'd recommend a visit - so would my ever-hungry teenage sons who always leave satisfied with their tummies full.
M. S.
Nicely kept place. Husband loved his meal- wasn't to my taste but that's not their fault. Handy location.
M. R.
Friendly helpful staff, great atmosphere and very dog friendly.
We had the Sunday roast, awesome!! Every item was cooked beautifully and plenty of it.
Highley recommended.
A. D.
Lovely food and lovely staff
S. M.
Lovely old pub very atmospheric, but drinks are very expensive, food was nice though
A. H.
Has never disappointed. Home cooked food and an historical place with oak beams, some low doorways, great collection of ship/yacht memorabilia. Great value and a good menu selection.
A. L.
Fantastic staff, really friendly. Lovely pub by the river Hamble.
J. g.
Amazing food and lovely staff. Really cosy old pub feeling from the moment you walk in. (Also loving that its dog friendly in parts of the pub, so we can still have a nice lunch with the dog by the fire)
A. G. U.
Absolutely lovely staff, attentive and efficient. Had to sit outside but the interior is very unique - there is some good history with this place.
R. S.
Staff were friendly, food was excellent. Will definitely be going again, soon.
W.
Friendly staff. Nice food. Good portions. Well priced. Nice range of drinks too. Bigger than you might think inside.
D. W.
Great food and drink, but not cheap. Nice old pub inside, just a little bit boring outside as the areas are either near the road or tucked away on the far side of the car park . Can't fault the service though.
V. S.
Very organised for covid. Ordered roast and it was superb. A gin and tonic to wash it down. When bill arrived I was amazed to be charged 3.60 for a fever tree tonic. When queried , was told it was correct....joke!!
R. B.
Atmospheric old pub. Very well-kept Fullers Ales. Staff friendly and helpful. My veggie burger and chips were well backed-up with side salad. Friends got generous portions of chilli and rice, very tasty! Looking forward to my next visit!
s. k.
Really nice pub, helpful friendly staff and good food with generous portions
Probably worth booking in advance at the moment as all tables were reserved
A. &. M.
Always friendly and helpful staff, nice pub and good food
s.
Went for dinner this evening with family.
Really love the quirkiness to this pub and it's tardis feeling.
The main was lovely and cooked well. 3 of us had the Lamb shank roast dinner which was lovely. Could not fault that at all :)
My son had sausages which were cooked nicely. Another family member had the Gammon and said it was nice.
Only downside was the pudding, my son and I shared the brownie. It was ok. The ice cream with it tasted cheap and grainy and the brownie was bland. Brighten and sweeten it up with a caramel or chocolate sauce and some decent ice cream. We are right on the door of the New forest, get some decent stuff in! Go taste the Brownie at The Brigidier Gerard and THATS a brownie!
I. W.
Lovely, as usual. Friendly staff and good quality food. The sandwiches are excellent value. The chicken royale was particularly huge!!
Well worth a visit.
T. F.
Nice pub with cosy wood fire. Nice area to sit and chill with friends in pub area. Also restaurant area too if you want to sit there. The food is reasonably priced and portions generous.
B. B.
We eat here regularly. Wonderful sunday roast. Had a southern fried chicken burger tonight, homemade !!!! really delicious !!! Salmon and veg lovely. Gammon is served with fresh pineapple grilled and lovely free range egg. Excellent !!!!
S. E.
Great ambience, perfect for a cosy drink with friends after a long dog walk
K.
Lovely place for families, couples, groups, and individuals. Lovely meals with a very large variety to choose from. Well priced and very friendly staff. Lovely outside area and plenty of parking. Brilliant would recommend to anyone.
J. M.
I love this place! Been going here since i moved to the area aged 18. I am now a 32yr old feller!
Staff always friendly. Foods delicious (i recommend shoulder of lamb 🤗).
And the owner is a modest motocross rider who casually patrols the place making sure everyone (firstly customers then staff) and everything is running smoothly. Much like, well... the captain of a well oiled ship
A true gem of swanwick and a complete contrast to the place opposite (the navigator) who rip you off left right and centre (a "sky diver" for an extra 4 more roast potatoes with my £18 meal!!?) spose thats cheap to the yachty rabble in there but i work hard for my dough ray me and can see when im being taken
Keep up the great work!
C. H.
Had the Sunday roast.oh my what a meal 😋absolutely loved it it.and the service was brilliant.
M. F.
The best pub / restaurant food around good prices as well
A. i. E.
Had a lovely drink here, sat in the outside garden, little noisy as by the road but didnt ruin it for us! Lovely staff and felt very safe with track and trace when arrived.
C. E.
Lovely food and staff
u. s.
Over price for the quality of the food, home made not sure?? . Staff lovely and can not fault .
S. S.
Lovely old English pub with a distinctive historical feel. Winter months has an open fire in the 'lower' lounge. Reasonable selection of ale and a good quality house Merlot on our visit.
A. M.
Charming old pub with centuries of tradition for serving refreshments to mariners, locals and passing travellers. Excellent food with generous servings. Friendly staff. We will be visiting again soon.
A. J.
Amazing Sunday roast yesterday, excellent service, definitely recommend and definitely be back ! Thank you
A. L.

T. M.
Great Sunday lunch. Vegetarian option look good as well.
L. B.
Pub's good. Beer good. Opening hours restricted to evenings only during the week...
R. M.
The place to go for decent food and friendly atmosphere
S. R.
Welcome staff and good food
D. B.
Good pub grub with good portions. Longish wait today but busy. Fullers ales only. Bar operative knowingly served out of turn. Poor.

Beautiful old pub friendly staff great atmosphere I ordered a mixed grill the cost I thought was a bit high at £18.50 when it turned up it was well worth the money the food was fantastic I will definitely be eating here again 11 out of 10 from me!!
J. O.
Very quaint pub by the marina. Served lovely food with a tasty goat cheese special. The staff are friendly and it has plenty of outside drinking space
P. R.
Mothers' Day meal. Food excellent. Staff rushed off their feet. Very noisy, because of high ceiling and hard surfaces. On the whole, very enjoyable.
B. P.
Lovely atmosphere. Good menu choice, though sadly no fish available the day we visited. Excellent value for money.
D. L.
Very good value for money as the portion sizes where massive. The fpod was really good.
T. D.
Good pub good food
P. B.
Standard Fullers pub and none the worse for that. Friendly staff and decent food
K. H.
Great food, also great that you can choose a smaller portion on meals too. Staff have always been helpful and friendly.
S. A.
Great little pub, excellent friendly staff team.
S. O.
Lovely pub.. Don't understand why two of the staff serve the same party and ignore people waiting to be served... Then the guy to walk off with about 3 patrons waiting to be served. 🤷♂️😕
M. S.
Great food and atmosphere here
C. C.
Really lovely building. Lovely staff. Food good. Very limited vegan menu.
S. M.
Excellent pub, so much better menu and range of beers than the opposition.
Nice staff to and a nice atmosphere to.
M. D.
Great food, good prices, lovely old fashioned pub
M. C.
This pub has real charm and character with the food having a real home cooked feel about it. I would highly recommend this as a lovely place to eat and drink.
v. w.
Nice friendly pub
G. R.
We use ghis pup often, the food is good honest pub grub at a fair price. I've never had a bad meal there.
G.
You will get a good plateful of food, really good value. Been going here for years never disappointed, nice staff nice pub.
K. B.
Huge range of products. Staff very polite but not able to be very helpful as nobody seemed to know where products were when asked.
J. R.
Had best meal lovely Christmas meal with friends good atmosphere. Lovely staff. An enjoyable lunch
S. G.
Beautiful home cooked food lovely little pub
R. C.
I thought the bar staff service was brilliant, however the price of macaroni cheese l thought was expensive at £13.
S. C.
Traditional old fashioned pub with surprisingly roomy dining area to the rear of the property. Traditional theme continues with the food although hearty portions.
T. T.
Nice food lovely staff quaint building
Def going back
N. C.
Fantastic! Great food, surprisingly quiet pub with a large restaurant area. Would highly recommend.
D. K.
Fantastic home cooked food in a historical pub preserved amazingly. Probably the best pub grub in southampton. Couldn't recommend it enough.
T. P.
Could be great, missed opportunity. Garden is poor, beer selection is limited, food is basic. A bit of effort and this could be the best pub in the area.
