Reviews of The Red Lion
P. H.
Went for a trip to home town today, a history reminder of Southampton. This beautiful old public house has so much history. The staff were so happy and helpful, polite and funny. The food was good quality and reasonably priced. A clean friendly place to go. Bar billiard's table upstairs and a lovely parrot called Molly. If your in Southampton and want history and atmosphere visit this old pub.
B.
A very old pub. Quick quiet pit stop mid afternoon so it was quiet. Efficient service and had some regulars in who seemed very at home creating a friendly atmosphere. Lots of phone calls whilst we were there for booking evening meals so sounds popular but food wasn't served at the time of our visit. Toilets for the ladies were upstairs and the rickety old uneven steps definitely give you the taste of how old this place is or how careful you need to be with the amount you drink!
D. B.
Fun, history filled pub on High Street. Typical pub fare. Friendly staff and good beer/ale selection. Pub dates back to the 11th century, and had historical significance as the trial of the conspirators to kill King Henry V took place here just before Henry marched of to Angincourt.
W. H.
This is our favourite proper old fashioned pub with great food! The mixed roast dinner pork and beef is excellent, red hot and full of flavour, 10 out of 10 for food and service...
m. s.
Quick evening stop for tea. Friendly staff and clients. Dog friendly too. Good food portions
R.
Popped in here for the first time on a pub crawl and absolutely adored the decor and style of the indoors. However, it is very much a local pub for local people and you’re not made very welcome if you’re a new face. Besides that they had a great selection of beers on tap and was reasonably priced.
I. P.
Probably one of the most historic pubs in Hampshire. A must visit for anyone visiting Southampton, it feels like stepping back in time when you enter the main part of the pub. An interesting bunch of regulars frequent or should I say haunt the pub too!
T. T.
Dont normally write reviews, but this definitely deserved one! My partner had liver and bacon and I had cottage pie! Absolutely beautiful and massive portions! Such good value for money!! Lovely cosy atmosphere!! Will defo be back!!
J. C.
This pub is so quaint.
It’s got so much history so if you like that this is the place to go! Great staff and a lovely environment!

Absolutely wonderful place to go & eat, we got there at 845 & they were more than happy to cook for us the food was excellent very large portions aswell would highly recommend if you want something a little different & it's steeped with history, banging & the parrot is back!!!
s. m.
A great trip back in time, this pub is a nice surprise. Hidden among the normality of the high street. Didn't eat on our visit, lady behind bar was friendly and welcoming. Definitely worth a stop for a pint or two and a game of bar billiards.
B. L.
Lovely pub filled with lots of old world charm, found by accident & went inside for a drink before seeing a band at the 1865 venue, would not hesitate to make a return visit.
G. S.
Interesting historical building with a good selection of real ales. It's a bit dark inside and no WiFi or mobile signal means you have to talk to people, not that that is a bad thing
N. L.
Local guide was as accurate as you can get! It's a great pub, serves great beers! It's very historic, but some what ruined by locals expecting to be served out of order!
S. C.
Friendly welcoming staff. Interesting regulars. Whats not to love! The food is great as well. Poper pub food! Qell.done guys!
R. W.
My wife and 40 ladies from her club Forever Friends had a Xmas lunch in the Red Lion. The food and service was exemplary. Nothing was too much trouble. Everyone enjoyed the lovely food. Thank you to everyone at The Red Lion.
I. F.
Oldest pub in Southampton, great staff, a haunted atmosphere and good priced home made food. You will not be disappointed, a must visit in Southampton.
Update 12th March 2018, the mixed grill is amazing.
j. w.
This place does the best mixed grill ever!
Great quality and cooked to perfection. Biggest appetites will be satisfied.

Best Roast dinner in town. If you've got a big appetite then this is where you want to be.
Good selection of drinks and great service 😊🍻

Haven't been to this pub, for 20 years , but it's just how I remember it, great , friendly boozer, definitely will call again after moving home recently, loved the parrot.🦜
C. H.
Nice place love the decorations all over the walls the knights armor is my favourite parts
j. j.
Full of old world charm. 2nd oldest pub in England we were told , built in 1174. Mentioned in one of Shakespeare's works. A must see in Southampton. One of many old Tudor pubs in The Old Quarter.
T.
Good food, friendly staff. Plenty of beer to choose from. I also admire the bird who lives here. Historic pub with lots of charm.
m. r.
Amazing little pub restaurant, food is superb and what a lovely history 👍
N. T.
Amazing old pub. Well worth a visit to learn a little history over a cheeky pint.
J. A.
Oldest pub in Southampton, friendly staff, good beer , locals made me welcome, recommended
M. Z.
Amazing place! Such a charm, very pleasant staff, order quickly received, delicious burger. Definitely worth visiting! Wonderful!
H. V.
Original tudor pub in the heart of Southampton's old town, inside the town walls, below bar gate. Interesting Norwegian blue parrot who appears to be "pining for the fields". The interior of the pub could use a bit of tender loving care to take it up to five stars.
A. C.
Love the place. Really old building. Standard pub. Good stuff ...
S. Z.
Ancient historical pub in Southampton. Good price food in generous quantity! Large selection of beers. I've chosen a brown one (unfortunately not cold enough). Worth a visit!
K. H.
Atmosphere is Aaaamazing! Old and authentic, drinks are good and service too.
T. W.
Good local pub with good priced beer.

A. T.
Very friendly place, roast dinner are lovely, will definitely go back
T. G.
Friend of mine came to visit me in Southampton. So I decided we should go to the city's oldest pub. Had such great service the moment we walked in. Greeted by friendly landlady and shown to our table. The ales on offer were excellent but the real show stopper was the food. My friend had the mixed grill and the quality of meat was absolutely outstanding. I've eaten in Michelin star restaurants and the meat wasn't as nice as what I had yesterday. Excellent value for money, an amazing setting and a great experience.. Will recommend this pub to anyone wanting a trip out or a friendly pint
P. M.
Tremendous authentic British pub. Great drinks and great atmosphere!
V. L.
Good old fashion pub where locals hang out with low priced drinks and great food.
S. M.
Nice little pub with good food and atmosphere.
R. B.
Beautiful old tudor pub, amazing decor, loved suits of armour
C. L.
Quirky old pub, great history to the building, make sure you see the parrot!
N. W.
Great beer selection, and a lovely historical indoor setting!
L. T.
The red lion. What can i say! If you want to drink inside a Tudor pub with timber joists to match then this is the spot. Huge projector if football is you thing. If not, the table service is second to none! I must personally commend Katie. What a waitress. Homely and welcoming with an honesty you would never find at Stein Garden. I highly recommend this drinking hole!!!
s. b.
Cool little pub with decent food, has a jukebox and the footie too
R. B.
Great food in a lovely historic old Tudor building!
J. M.
Best pie in town !
Good value meals and interesting history.
P. G.
Just very different it's very atmospheric, worth a visit, good beer and friendly service
T. L.
Lovely staff great Ranger beers and drinks reasonably priced
P. B.
Always worth a look around as they often update the exhibits.
P. L.
Brilliant pub with great chef and very friendly bar staff. This pub is deceptively old and unspoiled with high old oak beams and bags of character. Great beer 🍺
P. I.
Yes very reasonable food and service was good
B. L.
As a Portsmouth fan was good to see how the wrong ins water and feed
R. E.
What a lovely old fashioned pub and great food
m. c.
Fantastic old historical pub. Haven't been in there for years until just the other day. Good pint kept well.
M. f.
Already really enjoying the wonderful friendly service from Katie, really welcoming and warm then I ordered food. Delicious and such a great size. I am full. I recommend highly.
K. K.
Great beer lovely food with generous portions. Good host. Had a great afternoon with some old friends.
O. K.
Charming pub on the High Street. Has an old school boozer vibe. The perfect place to sit and speculate what those ancient walls have seen.
A. D.
This historic pub is not only great value but has a great atmosphere where all kinds of people can catch up over a meal or drink. The menu is very comprehensive and has amazing portion sizes you won't leave hungry for sure. There is the usual bar selection, sports on big screens when football is on and a dukebox. Cards have a minimum 5 pound spend and it is welcoming to anyone with disabilities as well. Highly recommended.
N. W.
Great pub with 3 or 4 well kept real ales and good pub food sold in huge portions. Just to add a bit more, this is a very historic pub with private owners (so a real free house), if you're visiting Southampton you really should pop in here to have a little look around.
**POST LOCKDOWN UPDATE 4th December 2021**
Glad to report no change here, still great beer & food.
A. P.
Great spooky old English pub! Feels haunted and the bar staff are friendly and there's even a talking parrot. Food is great, and they always have a local beer or two on tap. Left a bag there by accident and it was sat behind the bar waiting for me untouched when I came looking for it. Lovely people! :-)
D. B.
Friendly staff good beer
M. R.
Good food, nice ambiance.!!
R. R.
I worked in this pub a few years back just on a Saturday, nice manager and food was great 👍 well worth going if you want a good steak !!
A. H.
Staff very friendly. Food is fantastic and at a very good price. Great atmosphere and service.
k. k.
Love this place! Great selection of beers, wonderful ambiance. The best pub in Sadamptun.
M. N.
Definitely a place you cannot miss if you are visiting Southampton. I have lived in Southampton for few years and never been there before, excellent service, good variety of beers and Ales, and the food is just amazing. I went with another two people and we all end up very satisfied. Generous portions and the cook know how to do an excellent job.
R. C.
Great pub. The historical features add to the charm and ant pub with a parrot is a winner as far as I'm concerned. The food is delicious and great value. Portion sizes are very generous. I come here regularly and have never been disappointed with the food
N. H.
The pub was the truele oldest pub and friendly staff the beer was good.
S.
There is so much history here, it's an amazing old pub, I hope it never changes.
C. M.
I had Lasagne which was lovely, my partner had fish and chips which was equally good. Great portions, friendly service and the surrounding just brilliant, a bit of a feeling of taking you back in time. Thumbs up from me for sure
N. S.
The Red Lion has always been one of my favourite pubs, really great historic pub adorned with shields, flags and suits of armour and not forgetting a friendly grey parrot. The food is exceptionally good and reasonably priced. The steaks are cooked to perfection and your plate is laden with chips, salad, onion rings etc. There is a fairly good selection of lager, ales, ciders and spirits. The piped music has been awesome on some of my visits especially in the evening and the pub can be packed to the rafters. During the day the pub can be quiet with a relaxed atmosphere. The Red Lion does look a bit tired in places so if you are looking for a smart clean Gastro Pub don't bother but if you are looking for a pub with character and good food you must visit. A word of warning though - the steps upstairs are steep so mind how you go after a few glasses of your favourite tipple - enjoy.
M. P.
Nice old pub
Friendly staff
S. B.
Yet again banging roast. Large portions. Bit of a wait to get served as on a match day but well worth it. I had the mixed and brother had the lamb, both plates empty and if I'd had a bit of bread they wouldn't have needed to wash the plates. Lol.
M. P.
We all enjoyed our meal tonight 7 adults and I child, tables 102/3. Impressed with serviceand staff. I got home and found I had left my purse, went back and they had found it. Thank you so much. X we have been using the Red Lion for family meals. Thank you again. X. X
K. F.
We decided to try this pub due to it's good reports and described as a quiet pub We thought that it would not have music, we were wrong but it was not too obtrusive. However there was a noisy child shouting off and wandering about who appeared to be related to the bar staff. We thought the food was good value on the 2 for £10 menu even though my gammon was slightly over-cooked. The main menu looked good and we think we will give this pub another chance soon.
w. t.
Local, friendly bar with an amazing history
m. t.
My favourite pub in the city friendly staff and customers and fascinating history if I could give 10 stars I would

C. B.
Great Pub, food was excellent and staff very friendly and chatty 10/10
M. K.
5 stars for the character. Traditional old pub with atmosphere. Nice decoration is sometimes plagued by not matching pieces and broken chairs but these belong to this kind of pubs. Exactly where I feel good. No fancy modern place with "posh" like style but a full flavour pub
A. &. S. M.
Amazing atmosphere and so much history to absorb all whilst sipping a wonderful pint of Star! Nice staff too.
D. O.
Excellent, ancient, pub. Locals great, food brilliant pub grub. My friend had the steak and ale pudding. Enormous. I pigged out on double pork chop, and I mean pigged out! Heartily recommended. Enjoy.
J. W.
Nice pint, well kept beer and really interesting interior. So much better than Mcpubspoon.
D. R.
Gorgeous pub, steeped in history. Wonderful atmosphere and the food was AMAZING! Huge portions and fantastic quality. We will definitely be returning!
L. F.
An Excellent pub. Steeped in history and I have seen the ghost. Face appeared on the wall behind my friend as I sat there and watched. More funny than scary. Good choice of beers. Let the parrot go though, they don't deserve to be caged up for your enjoyment.
A. B.
4 of us went for a meal. All ordered different things and we all agreed our dishes were excellent. Really good value for money with large portions. The staff were really friendly too. Will return.
a. s.

Lovely old building full of character. Tish was very friendly. Great meal. Would highly recommend.
K. P.
Great food, well priced, Nice atmosphere!
We are on SW and the lovely landlady tailored the menu for our needs.
Also, the kids behaved impeccably because we told them about the ghosts!
J. C.
Had to have "fish and chips" because we're in England. We visited Red Lion and had an amazing lunch. The fish, cod, was a piece about 3 times larger than we expected. The breading was light, non- greasy, and stayed crunchy the whole way. The fish did not smell fishy, but was moist and delicious. It came with fries, cole slaw, and peas. All we're perfect.
J. K.
Wonderful place
B. P.
The Red Lion is not “Tudor style”. It is a genuine medieval building [with later additions at the rear] where Henry V held a trial of some treacherous nobles before hanging them from the Bargate and then popping over the Channel to sort out the French at Agincourt. The lounge bar is still the full height of the building with a minstrels’ gallery but a flat [apartment] has been built over the public bar. A place with more history than most museums where you can sit in front of a roaring fire with a pint and a pie. That’s how culture should always be.
M. H.
Good friendly atmosphere good ale
A. S.
Very old local pub who makes first time visitors feel very welcome. Nice selection of beers and tasty pub fare. Soak in the atmosphere while making new friends.

R. S.
Great food, great range of drinks and really nice staff. Awesome pub. ❤
I. O.
Good old pub with an authentic 500 years style. The food is excellent and comes in huge portions. 4 stars only because of cleaniness and extreme noise in the evenings.
a. b.

R. B.
Small but friendly enough, brings all the random people of Southampton together (local bar)
M. M.

A. H.
Great pub, that has kept it's old features and even has a parrot. Friendly service and good selection of drinks.
S. M.
Amazing atmosphere in a real Tudor building. Good choices of beers.
r. H.
The Sunday Lunch is great value for money, large portions of Beef and Pork with plenty of Vegetables, the Best Yorkshire Pudding by a country mile.
One complaint-:
My seat in the restaurant enabled me to see into the kitchen as the access door was left open, the person preparing vegetabls for serving us in the restaurant, was using his fingers.
( no serving utencils or hygenic gloves) to place each portion of vegetsbles into the serving dishes, on completing each serving he would return to the Bar !
Sittng at the Bar, between serving vegetables in the kitchen, and , not using either serving utencils or gloves, is not very hygenic
S. S.
Brilliant place with alot of history. Lovely staff.amazing food.best place and friendliest people we came across in Southampton. Very helpful and cheery.Thankyou guys.
J. M.
This is a beautiful building with a lot of character. Unfortunately my experience was a bad one. While ordering food, I was initially overcharged by the young male member of staff who I corrected on the price. I was then offered cashback and I asked for £20, which was added to the bill, unfortunately I only realised I did not receive this minutes later. When I took this up with the member of staff, he refused to accept this had happened and walked away from me saying, the manager had gone, nothing could be done.
I spoke with the manager and other member of staff who were at least respectful. I would like to think it was an honest mistake but I would urge other customers to be more watchful.
