Beautiful outside eating area with wooden picnic type tables and chairs but no umbrellas stands were there we sat in a shaded spot but betime we had finished the meal we were in 32°full sunshine. I had hunter's chicken with chips and side salad just could have done with a bit more sauce in a jug. My husband had fish and chips served with mushy peas which he said was a bit dry the fish was huge and very tasty. Other than that can still recommend it

Lovely setting and helpful staff, we didn't have to wait to long to be served and the setting was lovely. We had the river in the background and the sun was out, without to much overcrowding. The drinks were cold and the company Fantastic, we only dropped in on passing with the off chance of some cool refreshing drinks. To be honest I would have had something to eat too as I seen a mixed grill going by that looked lush. We had dinner before we went out though. Not a bad place to drop in for a quick beer or food in a great setting. Well done to the sump 👍

I was a bit disappointed when they had run out of my first two choices from the menu, but my third choice was ok. Not a great pie, but hot and tasty and the chips were good. It was very basic, but also very reasonable. I was delighted with the bill!

Stunning location overlooking the river. All the staff are welcoming and polite and know how to pour a great pint! The food is perfect and is extremely good value for money. There really isn't many pubs that can boast location, staff, food and drinks to a great standard but the Sump sure makes it look easy.

We booked a table inside on the reopening night 4th July 2020.We arrived and had our temperature taken and were then taken to our table. We felt incredibly safe and well cared for. Everyone was happily keeping safe social distance just happy to be getting back to the new normal. We had a delicious meal and drinks. Nice place to sit outside for a drink in the summer but that's just where it ends. Food is basic microwaved grub but it's cheap and cheerful if you like that kinda food. Staff can be a bit rude at times and can leave you waiting to be served while they fill in paperwork at the bar with no apology for keeping you waiting. Manners don't cost anything.

It's a while since I've been to the Sump & although the lovely riverside location remains nice to look out on (well when the weather's good!), the food has certainly declined! Having gone with my family to celebrate my nephew's birthday, we were all very disappointed with the food, I don't think any of us finished our meal & certainly none of us stayed for dessert. The Sunp used to have a great reputation for its home cooked food but whoever's cooking now doesn't appear to even know how to cook a decent steak, not only were medium rare steaks over cooked but the rare too!! I don't like to give negative feedback but the food ruined our evening. Staff training needed all round. The only reason I've gone as high as 3 stars is due to the location.

Whilst appreciative of being open for passing trade, the food was a bit hit and miss. Fish was inedible (refunded) but the buttermilk chicken was good as was the prawn cocktail. There was something very hard in the potato skins (friend thought it had broken her tooth at first!) and no tea or coffee because apparently the machine was broken. Not sure why its so hard to use a kettle nowadays! Gave a 3 as the staff were lovely but you do need to sort out your fish supplier and invest in a kettle!

I first visited The Sump in early October 2017, when we had a family reunion with my uncle and cousin who we hadn't seen since 1995!! We wanted to meet somewhere halfway, so I got on the internet and found this place, which turned out to be an hidden gem and a real find! The staff were extremely welcoming and very helpful. The food was good value and was delicious too as was the beer! The pub itself is nicely decorated, clean and well cared for. It also has plenty of seating outside and a purpose built bar, where you can watch the River Trent roll by and enjoy those lazy summer days in peaceful surroundings. The whole family enjoyed it so much that we went back in November and will be doing so again in the near future too.

My wife and I (both in our mid-sixties) visited here for an afternoon late lunch/early dinner. We'd previously been a couple of times for an afternoon drink. On previous occasions, we enjoyed our visit and bar staff were very friendly and helpful with the drinks competitively priced. However, this time our experience was different. Hoping for a quiet relaxing afternoon meal we were subjected to loud rock/pop music which the staff did turn down slightly when asked. However, it was still impossible to hold a quiet conversation. Staff, though not unhelpfiul, were not as pleasant or engaging as on the previous occasions giving the impression they were somewhat brusque. To summarise our impressions of the pub: Positive points: Excellent value food and drink Food quality acceptable - typical chain pub fare Truly superb location by the river with plenty of outdoor riverside seating and pleasant conservatory area inside with views to the river Tables clean and tidy Negative points: Music too loud inside for a quiet afternoon meal or drink Choice of music inappropriate for relaxing dining Staff attitudes are variable. Those on shift this last time gave the impression of just "doing a job to earn a living". We'll certainly visit again in the warmer weather for an afternoon drink sitting outside by the river but won't hurry back for a meal indoors. A final note: there were not many other customers there at the time we visited - we were quite surprised given its location, value prices and easy parking. Perhaps, like us, others have some reservations.

Chicken goujons were lovely, as was the juicy cajan chicken served with sweet potato fries. Although I didn't ask for them, they were very nice. While it was nice to have a proper chicken and gammon pie, it wasn't baked but rather microwaved and therefore heavy and soft. The pastry lid would have been better. I did ask for the whole meal to come together, which it didn't, however this may have been because of the wait for one of the mains. Great location tho, great bar staff, very helpful, would definitely go back.

One big gripe I have is if you order a drink for example a short and ask for it in a long glass with a mixer they charge you twice for the mixer. WHY? The mixer is probably about 2p in cost to them. Nice pub to meet and eat, what lets it down is the attitude of one female bartender.30/06/2017, there was just i and another customer at the bar the other customer was being served by a male bartender, the female bartender saw me waiting to be served, but instead took one empty glass to be washed chatted to her colleague, then looked surprised and said she didn't realise i hadn't been served yet. REALLY!1? Some people are not cut out to be employed within customer service.

A place for the sunshine's arrival. If the sun is out there is few better places to be for a drink/food in Burton. The gentle passing river, sunny seating areas, good honest pub grub set themselves up as a sound and satisfying summer watering hole. Bar staff are friendly and welcoming to families which is paramount in this generation. All of that is now lost in chains such as Wetherspoons and Goodridge. A pub who can find the balance between an environment for the 'locals'- drinking 'Black Sheep' in good conversation, and house a family of four happily- have a tool that keeps the old school pub mentality alive. This place has it. Don't walk into the gloomy Wetherspoons- Sump It.
