Reviews of The Ferry Tavern
J. J.
Really nice place to get a good beer and great food.
The atmosphere is really pleasant and makes the experience even more enjoyable.
The staff are helpful, friendly and quick with service.
There is more than enough seating even on a busy day.
I enjoyed my time here and would definitely recommend visiting this location.
I would recommend looking for the flood level signs on the bar as well.
E. F.
Always a friendly crowd and welcoming staff at the Ferry. Even more so today, as a fellow cyclist helped me out with my beer, when my phone payment embarrassingly refused to work 😳 Lovely session IPA too! Thanks again!
s. w.
Great place to stop after a long bike ride, beer is cold and they serve a nice meat & potato pie
Lovely outside bar as well
I. P.
Excellent pub, great location. Perfect to stop at when cycling. Great staff too.
C. F.
Great location, nice cheap ales kept perfectly
M. G.
Came across it recently on my way to Warrington during a bike ride and really liked this pub. Great outdoor area and rather cosy inside.
The toilets however need cleaning more often as it was a bit messy
T. W.
Top pub, they organise the brilliant Glastonferry, and have Wainwright on tap, what more could you want?
d. d.
Hidden gem. Very nice pub with a good outside space. Seems to get a lot of cyclists and walkers as it is just off a path that takes you along the Sankey canal. They have a good selection of alcohol and it is a very nice pint. Would definitely recommend if passing.
p. b.
Lovely location for a sunny, afternoon beverage. It was Easter Sunday and the pub was busy. Small inside but outdoor seating was available. Great circular walk along the canal to the marina and then round to the pub.
D. C.
Very busy day, place could do with a spruce up had a coffee, limited on hot drinks, queue was about 15 minutes for a drink. Sat outside by the river, parked on road 5 minutes away, nice day out but prefer it as a stop off when out biking as the majority of patrons there seemed too aswell.
Edited to Reply to Ferry Taverns response:-
"The hot drinks were limited due to stock so the selection for a pub would have been fine if available. The 15 minutes was approximate, I wasn't timing but was around that, because it was busy. It was an honest, impartial reply and review not a complaint if it seems that way. I've visited the Tavern before and no doubt will again as it's location is good for me and has nice selections of beer and ale. I've never had food there so can't comment, but what was being served looked delicious and the staff were friendly."
C. K.
Once again thank you to the team for our fantastic visit , the service, the staff and pub are second to none. If you are thinking about visiting the Ferry tavern please do, especially if your anxious or in need to recharge your batteries. Just grab a coffee or beer and a seat overlooking the estuary and look at the nature before your eyes?
No more words needed 😜
M. H.
Great place to go after a walk or while on a walk . Or a bike ride. Great views of the river Merseys and Moor nature reserve. Great selection of real ales at a good price. They sell pies throughout the day Great place for dog walkers. Very dog friendly. Great place to relax in the sun an have a pint or three.
M. S.
Absolutely amazing pub. The staff were very polite and the area is beautiful. First time we visited the tavern and we will definitely be back soon
R. G.
Went on Friday with my eldest Son Adam for a couple of pints lovely local pub friendly staff and a dog friendly pub which is nice.
Please put the meat pies back on and fish fridays miss that.
The Graham's 👍👌😁
M. M.
I nice quiet traditional pub, with low ceilings I might add.
Great views across the Mersey.
Good for cyclists, walking and dog walkers.
S. O.
A glorious place to enjoy an afternoon drink with family.
Employees were attentive, professional and welcoming.
I highly recommend a visit. Even better, love the pies and cakes
A. N.
It's has everything to be a great pub. Often the ale selection is underwhelming and not the best kept pint. It's very common for cask to be that little colder these days especially with some of the pales/citras etc.... I get the impression they're not too fussed about the cask, despite having ale festivals, as they're constantly advertising wine/prosecco nights. I would suggest they have a page on Untapped so people can see what cask is on or about to go on. It will attract more customers....
A. P.
Great little pub situated on the walking/cycling path beside the Mersey.
J. N.
Big sky pub with great selection of beers on tap. Only pies available to eat but still welcome after a long ride or walk. Glaston ferry concert this weekend!
J. R.
Very interesting old pub. Good prices and tasty beer.
P. G.
My favourite Warrington pub. Great setting by the river with plenty of outside seating. Cracking selection of beers and whiskys. Fridays and Saturdays serving freshly cooked tasty Fish and Chips, not too expensive, but you do get what you have paid for. (Temporarily-kitchen is closed, however they occasionally do have invited food businesses operating in the beer garden-checkbtheir website). Ideally placed on the cycle/ walking route from Warrington to Widnes (Pennine Trail).
J. A.
I went in to ask if I cld use there car park to park my campervan up and sleep at nights for the next couple of weeks ,I spoke to a lovely pleasant girl behind the bar and she said it should be ok so I'm there the next couple of weeks and also a nice wee pub to get my tea a couple of nights a week thank you .
l. w.
Fantastic range of drinks, average priced, the staff are superb and very friendly, but the main attraction is the scenery, amazing!!
M. H.
Lovely location and nice beer 🍺 great call in off your bike ride and a proper historic pub
J. A.
Lovely beer, great setting and dog friendly (as long as you avoid the carpet)
F. O. O.
Fantastic little pub by the river Mersey. Loved the and atmosphere and rustic nature of the establishment! Sights, sounds and alcohol galore on this hot sunny Sunday afternoon. Here are a few pictures: enjoy!😎
D. B.
Nice little pub, good prices. Nice & chilled when the sun is out
T. M.
This mainly serves as a pub where visitors to the local marina take their drinks outside. If it rained there would not be enough room inside to seat everyone as the inside seating area has only a few tables. They servce nice pies, but that's it foodwise. OK if it is a pleasant afternoon and you aim to go walking or sat at a picnic bench outside.
R. W.
This is a cracking little pub that serves some nice real ales and some pretty decent food too. It's on the Trans Pennine cycle route so if your passing and in need of a drink there's no better place. It's not on a main road so there's no traffic only cycles. If the weather is nice you can sit outside at a bench table or on the grass overlooking the Mersey.
I. S.
Half way stop off at the tavern, bit of light refreshment and then pushed on
C. P.
Great pub, real ales on tap and a wonderful location.
A. B.
In a very nice and quiet location with areas for seating outside , popular with cyclists . They have a large range of drinks including Fernandes Rhubarb and Custard which was delicious. At the time I was there it was quite busy so it was hard to find a picnic bench outside. A very nice place to visit with family and friends , lovely staff and a clean place. Would Recommend!
c. f.
Great little boozer on a sunny day to sit outside by the canal. Only shame was they had no alcohol free beer when I visited for my better half.
M. M.
fantastic place after a long walk. Great reward. Nice staff, good pies and cosy atmosphere
R. P.
Very atmospheric pub, very olde world, superb quiz on a Wednesday night.
M. B.
Beautiful little pub. Excellent place to stop whilst out cycling. Pretty good prices too. Dog friendly was also a nice touch. The view opposite the pub was also very nice
K. B.
Beautiful, peaceful location. Friendly staff and one local said the food was great but I didn't eat there
J. D.
Visited The Ferry Tavern on our way to Warrington, from Widnes, as part of the Trans Pennine Trail. Friendly, welcoming staff and an excellent choice of Real Ales! Was looking forward to lunch but sadly a very limited choice available (Friday night & weekends seem to be the best times for food). Information available in the Tavern, suggests they are an important part of the community e.g. Art Classes available. From the plaques on the front of the bar, flooding is also an issue they have to deal with quite often.
K. H.
Lot of nice history inside. The guest ales are very nice. This place sometimes has live entertainment in the summertime.
S. C.
Great place for a pint. Good selection of different beers
No umbrellas though
L. K.
Great beer garden looking over the water. Good selection of drinks
B. B.
This pub is not to be missed one of the area's little gems
M. S.
Good to see that the Ferry Tavern has survived the pandemic and is still as busy as ever. Not the place to get too inebriated as you have to cross a railway line to visit! A cosy venue with well kept Real Ales but only limited food on offer.
G. T.
Nice little pub on the banks of the river mersey excellent views across the river.
D. A.
One of the best pubs in the country, no doubt about that. Great ale selection, whiskey and gin bars always well stocked. Bike and dog friendly. Great views.
S. W.
Beautiful spot for an afternoon pint. We used this pub as a checkpoint in a bike ride.
A. J.
Lovely spot for an alfresco drink beside the River Mersey and St Helen's canal.
B. P.
A small error in my bill quickly put right by Andrew the manager. The pub is cosy , welcoming , full of friendly people. Cosy fires to sit by on a cold day.Give it a go.
G. S.
Lovely place by the river for a quiet drink.
C. H.
Lovely pub, friendly staff and great walks!
P. B.
Great little old pub by the river serving a wide selection of beers.
M. C.
Great little pub to have a pint.
A. K.
Awesome friendly staff, good choice of beers
i. m.
Lovely pub. Great choice of Ales and fantastic location
A. N.
Cracking little pub on the Trans-pennine trail, sandwiched between the river and the canal in Warrington. Some great beers on tap, friendly locals and staff, and cosy surroundings. Food is good, decent value for money, and the portions are generous. There is a good sized beer garden as well. Will definitely visit again.
B. H.
Nice pub, nice food. Full of kids and dogs because they're all welcome too. Always enjoy a visit to the tavern with the kids.
R. S.
Fabulously situated dog-friendly pub halfway along our walk from Spike Island to Warrington.
Coffee was absolutely gorgeous, hot tasty and thick which is much more than can be said of the pies! What could have been a beautiful pie had been microwaved to within an inch of its life so it was as soggy as can be! Total waste of money!
Staff were lovely and when I mentioned the soggy pie, it appeared that they thought this was the normal way to cook/ warm up pastry!! Big YUK!
D. W.
Enjoyed a pleasant Friday afternoon at the beer festival. Good selection of 20 beers available, pleasant staff and nice to sit in a comfy pub with a real fire in December. Would definitely recommend.
J. B.
This is an interesting place to visit if you like to go walking. You can walk along the canal and the river Mersey
S. J.
Fab spot riden from the Maltings Pub in 30 mins on Mt bike on trans penine way
G. T.
Friendly atmosphere, lovely hosts, helpful staff, great choice of cask beers, great fish and chips, nice warm fire in the winter.
J. J.
Quirky pub, at side of the canal. Plenty of outdoor seating and indoor space.
K. C.
Great pub with a lovely beer garden for sunny evenings
P. U.
Lovely pub 8 guest ales on last time i went in oct 2nd 21. Log fires,
L. E.
Great little pub and excellent food and beer.
N. W.
Unique format, location and setup. Nowhere quite like it. The obstacle course of approach in my favorite - park your car, cross a live railway line and a canal then walk alongside the river to the pub. Lovely staff. Been coming here for years and never lets me down. Oh, outside drinking between the canal and river is a delight.
s. m.
This is a lovely pub, very warm welcome, staff was excellent.
p. b.
Great place to sit after a walk GOOD CHOICE,OF WINES SPIRITS AND BEERS

Quaint pub that I hadn't been for a long time. Staff working well with a reasonable system to keep customers safe. We were offered outside table due to 2 dogs. Very polite, welcoming and friendly staff.
B. I.
Nice friendly atmosphere old worldly with river views
P. J. S.

I would strongly recommend anyone to pay them a visit
B. R.
Good grief! I can’t believe some of the reviews for this place. I always look for lowest ratings first, just to check out the sour grapes. They grow here in abundance, apparently, I’ve never eaten here, but have cycled from Ashton-under-Lyne for a drink occasionally. It’s worth it! Good range of real ales, friendly staff, fabulous location. I feel sorry for pubs like this though because in the winter I bet that trade can be dire. They have to pack everything into summer and special times of year. Anyway, this pub is in an epic location for cycling (within easy reach of Liverpool and Manchester and on the Trans Pennine Trail), walking, whatever. But the star turn off the Ferry must be the Mersey Bore. Research it. Get the right day and apparently you can be sat in the beer garden and hear it rush past. Apparently there are about 200 rivers with bores in the whole world and 60 of them are in the UK. This is a pinch point in the river, so it is particularly impressive. I’ve seen it from near here and it really left me feeling that I was witnessing a wonder of nature. Better still with a pint in your hand 😁

Made the trip from South Manchester today arrived around 1.40pm, young lad that greeted us was lovely.
Told to pick a table unless we wanted to sit inside no issue we chose outside as had 1 year old in pram.
When waitress came we asked for food and were told kitchen closed feel this should have been advised when we arrived, waited 30mins for soft drinks even thought it wasn't busy and then found that they had no facilities for baby changing.
We had been looking forward to visiting for a while and were disappointed at lack of updated information on the website, unfortunately didn't get to see any wild life besides ducks.
d. d.
Really nice and friendly staff / pub
S. S.
Fabulous proper pub.. Cosy atmosphere.. Great ales and friendly staff... Definitely worth a visit
P. J.
Nice pub, great for a canal walk, large beer garden. It could do with a few adult soft drinks because not everyone wants to drink fruit juice or coke and let's face it most people are going to drive there
R. S.
I did not go In the pub just walked past it. But looked cosy and a good place to have an affair as out of the way.had a drink today the beer was perfect
A. E.
I was out exercising today when I walked past the Ferry and to my surprise they were serving takeaway food with hot and cold drinks.
The set up they had for the new "normal" was very good with clear signs directing you through a well thought out one way system. The queues were kept very short and moving fast by the speedy service from their friendly staff. There were regular announcements reminding the public to not hang around and to follow government guidelines.
I would definitely recommend you stop by if you are out and about on your daily exercise. Do check days and times first as I think they are only offering this service of a weekend.
B. S.
Steeped in history. Fantastic location between moored boats on the canal and sailboats on the Mersey. Food limited. Open hours limited. Great for outdoor garden.
P. B.
Lovely pub.... Well organised regarding social distancing, there is plenty of space and there is an outside bar with waiting on.
The only down side was the lack of food.... There was a food menu but it had pies crisps and a limited variety of sandwiches available.
But it wouldn't stop me coming back 😊
C. A.
Great pub with good selection of drinks including cask ale if that's what you prefer. An enjoyable walk contributed by a traditional pub, overall a nice afternoon. Thank you 😊
k. w.
Great pub now open all day apart from Mondays with the best view and cycle paths next door
G. R.
Love this place next to the canal.great atmosphere, stayed all night.staff were extremely friendly, and the alcohol went down a treat.1st time here but will return again soon
G. R.
Disappointed it was SO quiet. Only pies being served and toilets needed a good clean
Y. L.
Very busy, welcoming, lovely to visit and sit outside on a lovely sunny day
C. H.
Cosy little family run pub that serves the half time refreshments for ours and many other peoples walks and bikerides. Great to sit out on the riverbank on a summers day slurping cider or to snuggle by the log burner in the depths of winter with a pint of one of the many guest ales always on offer. There's no TV and the decor might not be to everyone's taste but the atmosphere and general vibe to the place is something to behold. Wetherspoons it aint, and that really is a good thing.
R. J.
One of my fsvourite pubs right on the bank of the river for great views
A. O.
Always a great selection of ales and great service. Highly recommend.
P. H.
Great pies and a good friendly atmosphere. Perfect stop on a walk along the canal /river.

P. O.
Brilliant beers will kept.

I went there last Saturday for the Beer Festival., as usual it was excellent., still ranking as my favourite local pub.

Lovely place, great food. Staff are very friendly and they have a great range of ales and gin! Definitely the best place to sit and have a drink in the beer garden, wish I lived close enough to go every week!
B. R.
Was there Friday night with friends. Great to be back. The staff welcoming and as efficient as ever and the pub was immaculate and felt so safe. Well done to everyone. Much appreciated and deserves our full support!

I cycled here last Sunday, what a little gem. Great beer garden with lovely views, the best fish and chips I've ever had and the ale was beautiful. I'm already planing my next visit!
M. F.
This was my local 20 years ago. My wife and I turned up without booking for Friday fish and chips. It was very busy (6:30pm) but we managed to get a table. Very nice staff, food and beer. Highly recommended old style pub run by energetic young team.
B. S.
Friendly people and great welcoming atmosphere
G. C.
Fantastic location, nice beer, only 3 stars because I was driving and couldn't stay
L. G.
Great, very nice and friendly people

Nice pub, but the service was a bit hit n miss, took 30 mins to get our drinks, people coming after us were getting there orders before us, but staff did apologise.
J. E.
They don't do food.other than snacks
A. A.
Fantastic pub, friendly staff, great real ale plus great selection of malt whiskies from around the world. Recently started stocking more gins too so whatever your tipple they will cater for you. Amazing fish n chips served Friday tea time and Saturday/Sunday lunch and tea times - well worth the effort to get down there.
Large beer garden overlooking the river for fine weather and roaring fires to welcome you in the winter.
Love this place xxx
j. d.
Excellent location and fantastic views, only had a snack here but enjoyed it.
P. M.
Quality pub, friendly and nice old feel to the pub
G. G.
Lovely pub. Beautiful building. Fantastic location, with an amazing view. Six well chosen, still kept real ales, all from regional breweries. We enjoyed our fish and chips too.
M. J.
Great pub, right next to Mersey. A good friend nish point for a long walk down the river. Great selection of real ale and malt whisky. Wednesday is currently (Apr 2019) is quiz night. Worth knowing if you just want a quiet drink.
A. S.
Nice pub on the trans pennine trail. Great views and a large outdoor seating section. Pop up bar and very covid secure. A great place to stop for refreshments. Bike and dog friendly. Takes card.
R. G.
Nice pub staff nice and helpful. Beautiful setting next to the river Mersey . Pity not serving food at the moment. Would have given it 5 stars if the food had been on.
G. “. E.
Great place to go for a drink, especially whilst out walking or on bikes, lots of outdoor seating, food served was sandwiches & pies, would recommend a visit here.
N. L.
Good range of real ales and nice log fire.
R. W.
Out walking the Sankey canal and found this place.Very busy ,tried to order food at 14.02 and told meals finished at 14.00...Ok it was signposted. So we ordered a bar snack......pie and a pint, the pie was fantastic and decent beer too. We did like the look of the place so will return.
J. A. W.
Sat outside lovely setting quiet on weekdays
g. t.
Great selection of ale and nice slice of pork pie. Good quiz too. Cracking location to boot 👍
g. q.
Friendly staff ,nice cosy atmosphere . Well worth a pint or two
G. F.
Sat in the beer garden, good social distancing observed and first visit back to a pub since 13 March. Good hygiene regimen observed by serving staff. So felt very reassured.
R.
Great place to meet friends.
M. M.
Set low down beneath the banks of the River Mersey and hemmed in by a rail line and canal. This historic inn is alone in its country location, yet the vast power station lies nearby. A great place to get away from the town or city, plenty of outside seating to enjoy the peaceful surroundings. That said, it is often very busy with folk. Roomy interior for both drinking and dining. Recommended.
D. C.
Great place. Great location. Good choice of beers
M. H.
Lovely pub and a perfect place to stop off and have a pint when on a bike ride. A couple of years ago I was passing by on a hot day and had done 40 miles of cycling with another 20 still to go and had run out of water so I went in and asked the barmaid if I could get some tap water. She said yes and asked if I'd like ice in my water bottle. I was so appreciative. Thank you!
A. T.
Great beer and pork pie. Perfectly placed on the Sankey Valley cycle route
J. B.
Warm, cosy and friendly, well kept beers.
Great atmosphere, very relaxing!
m. A. h.

D. W.
Great country pub. Good selection of both beers and food. Positioned looking over the Mersey
D. M.
Great pub, great real ales. Staff absolutely great 👍
N. K.
Was invited buy friends who live in the area for a festival during the summer, had a great time! Nostalgia at its best. 2 Stages with 90's music and more up to date music later on. Service was supper quick, brilliant since there was lots of people present. Hope to make 2018's festival too!
S. L.
Cycle past this place frequently & tonight was with 2 thirsty cycling cohorts, but we'd all left without our wallets. The helpful young ladies behind the bar helped me phone home to do an over the phone card transaction, which bought us a much deserved refreshing beverage!
Thank God my wife was at home to read out my card details 👍
Just wanted to Thank the barmaids for being so Friendly, understanding & helpful towards a group of men in desperate need of a couple of ciders & a beer!
A. B.
Excellent place.Very quiet
N. C.
Great spot on an evenings ride.
R. N. (. B.
Nice pub. Friendly staff. Lots of real ale. Beautiful surroundings. Large beer garden, they have festivals and live music in the summer there. I would recommend this place
D. P.
I often stop here for a drink whilst out cycling. It's right in the trans penine trail so I always see a lot of other cyclists.
Service is fairly quick and prices are reasonable. The beer garden is really big and looks out into the water so it's nice to relax here.
It also hosts the locally famous Glaston Ferry which is amazing!!! 😁
G. N.
Excellent pub, very welcoming staff, lovely environment and wide selection of real ales, ciders and spirits. I would definitely recommend this place.
J. G.
My first visit for their Sunday night quiz. A very likeable quiz master and you should get there earlier for food .. if you like fish and chips (not much more choice). Friendly locals and bar staff .
S. M. R. (.
This pub is lovely; beer, service & regulars. I've been told by my good friend H..... that the pub & its "family" have never failed to make him feel welcome. If one wants more room, there's tons of countryside to walk in on the way home, but please beware of the river & especially the canal! ;-]
P. E.
Great place to stop off when you are cycling or walking on the trans pennine route. Friendly staff, good quality food and drink. On a warm day you can sit and watch the tide run up the Mersey, and if you are lucky, spot a seal or 2
W. P.
Lovely cosey pub. Dog friendly and very welcoming.
s. b.
Fantastic pub with plenty of history. Beautiful views over the Mersey river on a lovely day, in a quiet location on the trans penine trail. Excellent choice of drinks.
B.
Great little pub
A.
Been coming to the Ferry Tavern for over 10 years. It's an authentic beer pub which also happens to do very good fish and chips. The beers on offer change regularly and I am yet to have a bad pint.
Glastonferry is also worth visiting as they put on live music, food and a guest beer list.
The pub is also right on the Mersey river footpath so is ideal for stopping at or starting at when walking. They also have a carpark over the other side of the train tracks (never seen a train use the tracks as it was for the coal going to the power station). All round top small pub.
M. C.
Amazing pub, fantastic atmosphere and location, friendly staff. Well worth a visit if you enjoy real beer and more than reasonable prices. Great selection of Whisky and Gin's too.
D. M.
The ferry is a fantastic pub. Best views in the North West and a good choice of beers.
D. H.
Nice little place with lovely pie and piccalilli!
P. S.
Great place to stop off on bike, while cycling down the pennine trail. They have four guest ales on, which always seen to be good quality. Always check opening hours, before setting off.
G. F.
Best pub 4 miles. Good beer. Massive choice. Lovely staff. Cheap prices. Good location. Good food. Geoff the taxi. 😅😅
M. H.
This place is one of the best pubs I've visited in my life. I would move house to have this as my local. Visit it, you won't regret it. Five stars x 2
L. F.
Such a lovely oldy worldy pub. Very friendly, multiple beers & spirits to try
M. L.
Had a lovely bike ride there on the Trans Penine trial from Morrisons. Beautiful views of the Mersey and Moore nature reserve, a superb pint of Farmer Jim's cider (with ginger taste) and a cafetiere of good coffee.
a. c.
Always loved it here, fantastic views and atmosphere, a real ale pub popular with families visiting the canal and river. Always well crowded on weekends and holidays, people come from miles around for dog walks and bike rides and to chill with a pint in the sunshine/wind/rain/snow <delete as applicable>

On Trans Pennine Trail next to River Mersey. Car Park is at opposite side of rail track 150 metres from pub. Excellent real ales, good beer garden but food is limited by both serving times and choice. Pub has flooded a few times when river is high. There are marks on the bar showing some of the highest water levels.
