Stopped here on a whim. Very old, brilliant oldy worldy pub. Massive meals, excellent quality PUB food. Very busy, lots of locals, dog friendly. It's not find dining, it's just a great pub to have lunch or a drink in.

A wonderful little pub dating back from the 16th century! They have a lovely selection of on tap beverages, the Madri beer is really smooth, I'd highly recommend! The pub is dog friendly and offers complementary dog treats

Booked the Pickering Arms for a birthday gathering of 20 people to celebrate my daughters birthday. This was a last minute booking as I couldn’t accommodate everyone at home on such a hot day. (And wanted to enjoy the day myself ) The experience was faultless from start to finish. The staff could not do enough, I would like to personally thank Jackie and Liola who were particularly tentative to making the afternoon run smoothly. The guests all commented on the venue, location and the quality of the buffet. The food came on time even though I requested it be brought out a bit earlier at very short notice. We had our dedicated area for the duration (we opted for the garden canopy seating area which was perfect) We were made to feel very welcome and not rushed in any way. Nothing was too much trouble. The day was thoroughly enjoyed by all. (Especially the birthday girl) I will defiantly be booking again in the future. Thank you

Really cracking pub. Not noisy, great atmosphere and friendly staff who are both attentive and polite - if you're looking for somewhere for dinner this is a wonderful pub! Steak night on Thursdays too!! Special mention has to go to our waitress Maddy who was lovely and chatty - 5 star service ... thanks Maddy!!!

I must admit to being hugely disappointed when I walked in here and saw Wainwrights and Pedigree were there only draught beers. After having a pint of each I was left wondering what more I could have asked for. Both were in excellent condition and a credit to the landlord. I think the keep it simple, but do it well, idea probably extends to the food as well. The menu is not extensive. Once again, who needs it if the basic offerings are done well? This is a lovely, unpretentious pub in a picture postcard location. Gorgeous beer garden, interesting walks to be enjoyed thereabouts and the chance to experience one of the last two ferries across the Manchester Ship Canal.

Went here as a guest for a Father's Day meal. Several of the dishes off the menu. Chose a roast lamb shank with Hasselback Potatoes. Came later than other main meals, but with apologies, and a complimentary drink. Lamb shank fine, vegetables, small portion and tired. Potatoes tired and tasteless. Other mains, also tired, steak served without vegetables or the garlic butter. Sweet potatoe fries soggy and bland. For the price, the steak was poor without vegetables. Burgers dry and over cooked. Maybe they'd had a busy day, but I've had far better for far less. Staff attentive and quick to serve. Maybe a less busy day may provide a better experience. Friends who have been before praised it to be fair. Times are tough in the pub/catering trade so you need to be on your game, tonight it wasn't. Pity.

I was pleased to find this excellent pub open again after an extended recent closure. It is now under new management and has a brand new kitchen and food storage facilities - not that we learned any of this from the web site. It was annoying that the closure and upgrade was not mentioned at all on the web site and I think they should have publicised such an important investment. The food was still as good as we have become accustomed to and the service was excellent. The baked Camembert was cooked just right, oozing but intact, and served with beautiful bread that was crispy on the outside and chewy inside. Nice to see padron peppers served as a side and presented correctly dressed with rock salt. A mashed avocado with crab meat was just the right temperature and served with a lovely sourdough bread. The atmosphere is light and cosy but not twee. There is plenty of space around the decent sized tables and the music was not intrusive. We throughly enjoy this calm, relatively quiet environment and will continue to visit for lunch. There is a large car park and easy access to the outside or inside tables with just two small steps down into the pub. It’s good value food and we hope it builds on its previous good reputation under the new team. Well worth a visit.

We went as a family for Sunday lunch and wow, the beef was was the best I've ever had and I dine out a lot, the sticky toffee pudding with ice cream was to die for, if I hadn't been with my mum I'd have liked the plate, excellent service, very friendly staff, I'm going back very soon

Had a fantastic lunch out with friends after a lovely walk at Risley Moss , safety measures all in place , sat in garden as weather gorgeous , food was stunning and enjoyed by all , I had the rag pudding(beef and onion in a suet casing) with chips and peas what a delight a melt in the mouth meal , one friend had steak and ale pie( a small portion with mash ) dont know how big the large portion is but small one was massive other friend had beef bourginion with half and half , again a generous portion , baby already had food so had a icecream with fresh fruit which he really enjoyed , will definitely be back to try out other meals , also is Dog Friendly too ,an added bonus , dog bowls and own barrel filled with water , staff very friendly and helpful too

Lovely historical pub in the beautiful historical area of Thelwall. I would say, that price of the food is high, and there is a lack of promotions and daily offers. Other pubs in Warrington are way ahead.

Tonight was the first time that we have visited the Pickering Arms. The menu choice was reasonably wide, with some popular choices through to more adventurous dishes, the presentation and the standard of chefing was excellent, drinks choice was good, with some nice cask ales on draught. The staff were delightful; polite, courteous and genuinely helpful. Special thanks to Sarah and Katie and the bar manager (sorry I didn't ask your name). We will return.

Nice oldy worldly pub with some original features. Staff were nice and friendly. Food was average pub food. I had a chilly steak baguette and fries. The steak was lovely and tender. It was very chilly in the pub though. To the point of being cold. Maybe it's where we sat. I would go again. Thellwall is a lovely little village.

We had our wedding celebration at The gorgeous Pickering Arms with a marquee at the back and i can honestly say the landlords and staff went out of their way to help make it the best day of our lives. The marquee was set out with immaculate attention to detail and the food was excellent, as were the drinks! Due to Covid regulations table service was in place and every effort was made to ensure both staff and our party were covid safe. Luckily the weather was gorgeous and we were able to open up the walls of the marquee and have music according to the guidelines. We'll be coming back for meals in the future, thank you once again!

I cannot believe I've lived so close to here and not visited before , filled with history and staffed with friendly welcoming people is only rivaled by the excellent drinks selection and very diverse dining options , bring an empty stomach as they give generous portions and trust me you won't stop until the plate is scraped clean , I will be returning whenever I'm back in the country.

A treat to eat here after running English Half Marathon. Staff friendly and approachable and attentive. Despite restaurant being fully booked offered food in bar which was very comfortable and food very prompt. Sunday lunch was gorgeous. Rich gravy, tender meat, every variety of veg roasted or boiled. A group of us went for sunday lunch, all the meat eaters loved it, but I would say avoid if you are a vegetarian. I was told there was no veggie option and would have to have just veg as the chef said no to the cheese and caramelized onion that is one of the few veggie choices throughout the week. I was given a plate of veg but no gravy as they only had meat gravy so my meal was dry and told if I wanted mash I had to pay extra. I was still charged the same as everyone else which works out expensive for a plate of vegetables, so I won't be going again.

Sick to the back teeth of them cancelling bookings. I can understand it with large tables but it’s happened a couple of times now when it’s been just two of us. The booking system they use is useless... it asks for a time then checks it and says good to to go and then the restaurant cancels it saying it’s not available. Other pubs that we use have a much better booking system that tell you the availability straight away which saves you booking a time slot that isn’t available !! When they haven’t cancelled the booking the food is always great and they have a decent selection of drinks and so because of this I’ve given it 3 stars instead of 2.

The Pickering Arms has a very good selection of gluten free dishes but the online menu doesn't say which ones they are. I phoned and was told the lady I spoke to would email it to me but it never happened. When I got there she told me that if I had clicked on download menu it would have been there, but my friend had printed the download menu and it still didn't say. So the food was very good but they need to get their act together with the online menu.

Went with my partner for his birthday was placed in a little corner so warm no windows to open. I ordered Roast beef dinner the beef was lovely everything else had been microwaved roast potatoes were rubbery gravy stuck to the side of the plate. Other half had Sea Bass which he couldn't fault and king prawn and chorizo risotto hardly and chorizo and no king prawn and the risotto was very dry. The Apple crumble was lovely as home made but again was put in the microwave.
