Reviews of The Anchor
D. B.
Warmly welcomed by staff. Lovely location next to the river. Nice decor, lots of "canal boat decor" very fitting. Good choice on menu. We settled for sharing baked camembert and having a dessert each. Was not very crowded but still had nice atmosphere and the food was very good. Prices were reasonable. Close to RHS Wisley.

Lovely looking pub by the river with barges and all sorts of flotilla pass by while enjoying a pint with some lovely pub food in the middle of the forrest.
Toilets inside with disable access.
Fantastic looking bar.
Enjoy a chill out walk along the river after your lunch and enjoy the wild life and flying insects that inhabit the river lined with barges.

I really love the Anchor. Such a fine example of a friendly, relaxed public house, and that view, it really is something to marvel. I often end up here just before the rush hour starts if the weather is nice . Weirdly I've never struggled to get a prime seat and have always been delighted by the service here. I highly recommend it to anyone looking at their watch and realising its pimms o'clock! Food looks great but that's something I am yet to try. I shall update that once I've returned but I'm sure it's just as good!
A. W.
Great pub in a beautiful location. Didn’t eat on this occasion but have done so in the past and the food was great. You can sit by the canal and watch boats go by 😎

Large British pub on my favorite lock.Open at 10.00 am with warm bacon buttered rolls and tea.Biscuits and water always available for dogs.Friendly helpful staff. Two large parking areas.Meeting place for dog walks, barges crews and locals far and wide.In door or outdoor sitting areas .Happy place.

We came here for a delightful weekend reunion with family from across Surrey and London.
The atmosphere was very welcoming and the staff for really kind and helpful - providing a goody bag for children to keep them occupied.
All the food was delicious, especially the Hake pictured. Will definitely be making a return!
P. P.
Great Place and fantastic food. This pub is right next to a lovely canal with outdoor seating as well. The Anchor is a spotless pub and well maintained in cleanliness. Plenty of parking spaces, but would be wise to book in advance here! It is wheelchair accessible but when you book make sure you advise your situation of your needs!
Fantastic Staff and very polite and very helpful. Reasonable prices and never felt rushed to exit like some places do. 5 Stars and would recommend the pub 👍👍👍

Visited on a sunny Saturday afternoon on bank holiday weekend. Really busy. But managed to find a table outside.
It’s drinks outside only.
Bizarre que as if waiting in supermarket to order drinks from bar. It keeps the bar clutter free of customers. But other customers didn’t adhere to que. And staff were quite happy to serve them in priority to people who had been queing.
Made a dinner reservation in person. As website stated fully booked.
Arrived to half empty restaurant at 19:30.
Google review stated restaurant closed at 21:00. Staff denied that stating normal pub closing time. But kitchen closes at 20:00.
Overall nice meal. Friendly service. And speedy food. Downside was very limited menu.
I would visit again. As beautiful location beside canal.
G. C.
First stop on our boating holiday. Very busy pub with excellent food and service. Plenty of mooring and water top up for the boat.
L. R.
Really nice pub by the canal. Good food and a decent selection of ales etc. Also has a great beer garden with plenty of shady places
N. C.
Did a morning trail walk ending at The Anchor. It was a lovely day to sit outside by the canal and we ordered some food and drinks to just chill and relax after the morning exercise. Double cheese burger was yummy with juicy patties, the battered cauliflower wings with fresh lime & sriracha mayo was absolutely delicious! Definitely one of my favorite pubs around Surrey ;-)
O. C.
Nice place, decent pub food with a lovely canal view. A little crowded but table service went well. I recommend you to order via app.
J. D.
Great midweek lunch with friends. Our online booking got lost in the ether but the reception team found us a great table. Very friendly and efficient service. Good food, nicely presented and contrary to other reviews reasonably priced, compared to the competition. Relaxing atmosphere by the canal. Great for dogs with good walk along the canal.
F. L.
A wonderful pub by the side of the canal, ideal location. Food was excellent, plated up well too, and for a reasonable price! The service was great, the guy who served us was really funny which added to the atmosphere :) my boyfriend and I cycled up the canal to the pub and were able to lock up our bikes just out front and enjoy a Sunday lunch 👏🏻
d. c.
Really lovely pub good food. service was great and the location is so nice right by the river so can watch the boats and paddle boarding go by or stop to eat was very busy which is a good sign in my eyes definitely going back with my other half and friends
D. H.
Really enjoyed our first visit to The Anchor, Pyrford. Food was excellent as was the service. Location great, atmosphere 👌
s. c.
Great location on the river. Staff very polite and food good. It would be better if it were table service at the outside tables, instead of ordering at the bar, although that wont put us off going here as regularly as we can as we really loved it. Good mix of clientele, prices sensible. Large car park opposite the pub.
S. T.
Superb location! Tranquil hideaway pub along the River Wey, boasting a delicious menu, gorgeous views and space for all kinds. Quintessential British pub experience!
S. P.
Ohmygoodness the triple cooked chips are unreal! Still dreaming about them.
In fact everything about this pub/restaurant was wonderful. Short drive outside of London. Loads of parking. Spectacular views and the most beautiful and peaceful walk.
Note you need to book as The Anchor is rightly very popular. We choose to sit inside. The staff are genuine and lovely. Oh it's dog friendly too.
Good selection of dishes, very generous portions and tasty. I would be interested to know when the pizza truck is in use/ opens but the fish finger cob and chips I had was delicious.
This one is going on my favourites list. Cannot wait to go for a Sunday lunch!
G. S.
Spent a couple of hours in the pubs garden/terrace area today for lunch with my mother. The food was lovely, the staff were so attentive and quick to ask if we were okay and if we needed anything!
The manger today also went above and beyond helping a customer who only had cash in a cashless pub! Will most definitely be back, absolutely brilliant afternoon.
D. D. C.
Great atmosphere ..relaxing and very well located ..near a river ..but very expensive for the portions...
D. T.
Nice location, food is reasonable, but unfortunately the service is absolutely shocking. Ordered food and drinks via the app, 30 minutes later the drinks had yet to arrive. Upon mentioning it to the manager he told me how busy it was, pretty certain a beer and a glass of wine doesn't take 30 minutes 🤷♂️ the food and drink did arrive shortly after that but the food had clearly been sitting waiting for someone to deliver it as it was cold. Staff were pretty miserable too, no smiles, tone of voice like they were soooo bored. I would still recommend visiting but only for drinks and order at the bar.
I. W.
This star rating is for the front of house staff especially our waitress Mia and the manager however the delay in receipt of our food over an hour spoilt the experience overall. However we were kept fully informed throughout in a friendly manner hence the good rating. The food was of a very high standard when it arrived. Not sure if this was a one off as don't frequent this pub that often.
A.
Amazing food. Gorgeous waitress. Idyllic location!
J. Y.
Lovely location by the water. Good beer and menu. Food service was quick (but we just had their cobs and chips and ordered at the bar, not using app). Staff were excellent and helpful.
G. M.
First time attending since lockdown eased and it was worth the wait! The staff were very friendly and attentive, and they made sure to tell us all of the Covid safety precautions they had in place. The food was lovely and fresh. We had the whitebait, beetroot and potato fritter and the southern fried chicken burger.
The pub is situated right by a lovely canal so I definitely recommend a walk down by it after eating at the pub.
S. A.
Beautiful location. Good parking and amenities. Food was amazing and good range of old mout ciders, which is my personal preference of cider, I don't drink much else. Not too costly (under £50 for two of us to go and eat). Will definitely be visiting again.
M. W.
I would mark this higher as it's a lovely location and food was good. But, when ordering, we asked about gluten in the bread. The person taking the order didn't know and said that we would need to see the allergen menu. He wasn't prepared to get one for us, so we would have had to leave the 15 minute long queue. Pretty shocking behaviour. We engaged up ordering something other than the item we wanted. Definitely could do better.
S. S.
Limited menu for mains and dessert . But fast service even whilst fairly busy
J. M.
Beer was good, food very popular. Tight corner over canal bridge to get in and out of there ,metal posts too.
Staff were great but running around to serve everyone. Was it too busy?
Don't go if you hate dogs.
J. C.
A beautiful view and a fantastic place to come and sit and have a drink next to the canal. Unfortunately though there were no Sunday roasts left (early Sunday evening seating), there was a huge amount unavailable from the menu and while friendly, the service was slow and definitely lacking: bare minimum with trays and plates not being cleared until we asked, even though it wasn't that busy.
R. B.
Food was good, and views were excellent by the canal. It was super busy when we visited on the Sunday afternoon, and seemed like they were understaffed as we had to queue for fifteen minutes just to order at the bar and there were a lot of uncleared tables outside. Would recommend visiting when they are less busy.
A. A.
Really good Sunday roast. Generous portion, the vegetables were perfectly cooked and presented. Lovely outside area to sit right by the lock and river. To top it off the service was friendly and efficient! Recommended 👍🏻
S. M.
I’ve been here twice in the last 2 months. The location is stunning. The food is lovely. Unfortunately the service was quite chaotic on both occasions we visited. The staff mean well and are polite but there is a strong lack of organisation at the moment.
E. C.
Beautiful location by the water in the blazing sun, peaceful, with good company for lunch and a pint. Had a lovely time. Polite staff and it's kept clean. Has it's own very large car park.
K. R.
Lovely location and interior. Sadly I found the waitress over attentive and slightly irritating as she interrupted our conversation often. She was trying very hard to be good though. The food was okay but my salted caramel ice cream was a bit tasteless. I was told this was because it was vegan. Poor vegans! Probably won't go back.
J. Y.
Lovely location. Food and beers were very good, as was the quick service (Thursday lunchtime. We all had cobs so little cooking involved). Nice staff.
G. S.
We went to the anchor for some coffee and cake after a walk. We paid for 2 pieces of cake pot of tea and coffee and cake as we didn't want a large meal. The cakes tea and coffee were fab and couldn't be faulted. We did have to ask for our 2nd cake to be brought over as it hadn't been which wasn't a problem. The QR code was useful. Lovely view of the river. I think I will come back for a dinner or lunch to try. Thank you
A. S.
Love the location and ambience. Found on Michelin guide and had high hopes. Food was average with calamari not very fresh. Service was a bit subpar and perhaps they need more staff. We mentioned there was a tiny stone in our starter and no follow-up whatsoever. Main dishes were completely forgotten until we had to chase after approx half an hour.
B. S.
A really nice setting with seating but the canal. Enjoyed the food that we had; but there were LOTS of items on the menu that were not avaliable and would have been our preference. Service could have been better.
R. W.
Despite being a busy Sunday morning and short of staff (isn't everybody just now?) we had a tasty nut roast with all the trimmings served quickly and with a smile. Lost a 5th star as we weren't able to round off our meal with a coffee or tea (see above regarding shortage of staff on this occasion) regained it for the sign on a door near the toilets.
M. M.
We had a wonderful meal here with friends. The restaurant part was cosy and very inviting.
Service was brilliant - definitely more in the league of a restaurant than a pub. Our waitress had a great understanding of the menu and made suggestions based on questions we asked. Very, very well trained!
The food matched the service too - very well cooked and presented and all tasted amazing.
This will definitely be our new place to eat and relax with friends, can’t wait for the summer and to sit outside here!
The only very minor thing we would have liked to see would have been for the lovely stove to have been lit, given it was a cold wet night. But I can imagine it gets very hot!
Thanks for a great evening - see you again soon!
T. B.
Lovely spot for a drink and fish finger sandwich. Plenty of seating inside and out. Staff helpful.
K. F.
Beautiful pub by the river with plenty of parking. Reasonably priced with friendly staff. Can get busy at the weekends but a must visit if you’re near.
L. N.
Lovely location and well staffed with a great menu - speed of food does appear to be hit and miss though. Our main courses arrived within 20 mins, but our desserts (just ice cream and a cake) took nearly an hour unfortunately.
V. K.
Lovely pub with parking and nice Location.
Dog friendly 🦮❤️
P. T.
Seriously good fish and chips! Cost only £3 than my local chippie for the same so why not go there. Excellent value for money.
J. L.
Visted the Anchor on BH evening after the staff had probably had a long day. Have to say it was the best meal we have had for a long time. Staff were lovely. Food was delicious. Couldn't fault anything.
R. P.
What a nice setting for a restaurant by a river near a lock and being able to sit outside was a bonus, The food was delicious and the staff were friendly and helpful. Would recommend this restaurant and will hopefully go again.
M. M.
Busy but nice family friendly atmosphere and the service is polite and keeps up with demand. You are very close to a lock and you don't usually have to wait to long to see a barg or three go by.There is also ample parking.
P. S.
Great location and friendly staff. Ordered a double cheese burger and it came out quicker than McDonald's. Shame that such a nice
Pub and food was so so.
Pal & Harry.
J. G.
A lovely caring team. Thank you especially to Gina and Leah who reacted promply when an elderly friend in our group suddenly felt very unwell in the heat.
The food and ambience was great too.
S. a. S.
The food was excellent and our waitress Jemima was lovely - very smiley and helpful. A really enjoyable lunch, we will certainly be back again.
H. B.
Makes for such a lovely day out of London. The vege roast is good and the sticky toffee pudding is incredible 🤤 1.5 pints, small roast and pudding £24 before tip 👌 Service friendly and efficient. This was our second visit but will be back 😃
C. B.
The pub is in a stunning location, the waitress was kind but the food was not good. Quite disappointed. I will go back for a drink not for food I am afraid
N. C.
Really enjoyed our meal at The Anchor today. Thanks to the staff and the friendly chap (possibly the manager) really good service. Food fresh, hot and delicious. Lovely sunny spot by the canal lock, will be back.
L. D.
Just enjoyed lunch at the Anchor, there was seven of us two children. Excellent food very attentive waitress. Well done.
A. G.
Lovely place, we found a table outside for eight of us after waiting a bit, then we went up to the bar to order drinks and food where told that they didn't take cash, so we left 😔 We had found this pub on the there website but no mention of card only!!!!
B. C.
A great location next to the canal with lots of seating inside and out. Also good choice of food well presented.
B. C.
Really good pub. Really good location. Really good choices of drinks. And best of all, really good sunny day. :D
L. M.
A beautiful location on a canal lock been many times incredible peaceful setting loved by all who go there. Lots of good walks nearby
T. H.
Had lunch here yesterday, lovely food, good prices and a super location right by Pyrford Lock, really lovely sitting outside in the sunshine watching the boats coming through. Friendly staff, definitely worth a visit
E. S.
Great little pub with indoor and outdoor seating. For busy times or large parties, definitely book a table. Outdoor has no table service, and with one bar, it can be quite a wait to order during the summer. It has great atmosphere though, as it is right next to the loch and canal. Staff are friendly and you can tell they (for the most part), enjoy working there. Table service can be slow indoors.
B. S.
Lovely Pub in beautiful location. Staff all friendly & the service was excellent.
We had fish & chips & it was beautiful & big portions, even the smaller one.
Will definately back
J. M.
A lovely pub restaurant right on the waterside next Pyrford Lock. After a walk in the snow we were shown to a cozy table next to the central fireplace you can see in the pictures. Staff were friendly and efficient, while the dining room was packed with fellow walkers, people with dogs and family groups. The quality of the food was a wonderful surprise and the portion sizes were very generous (I had the prawn cocktail, their signature pie and a winter fruit crumble, which were all on the large side). Would like to come back and visit again in the summer.
R. P.
Good food, sensible prices, beautiful location by the river but service a bit patchy (no steak knives provided without asking).
Y. T.
It's been a while since I visited, but its improved a lot from what I remember. The restaurant was fully booked and just managed to get a table to experience a really great meal, lovely atmosphere and see the roaring fire. Staff were great. Kitchen only opens at 1200 so if you come earlier you can have a table with drinks. Order at the bar. It was also nice to be able to leave the tab open for follow up drinks 😉 there are 2 car parks, one to the side and 1 by the lock. Loved the sign stating that you almost missed the turning for England's finest 😂
L. B.
Lovely meal but spoilt as I didn't realise it was dog friendly so wheezed throughout the meal. Must remember to read the small print. .
S. M.
Tried this place on a recommendation, turned out to be a lovely place .. seating next to the river is unbeatable any day, combined with delicious food and fantastic weather it made my day..
O. S.
I had a flat white coffee which was delicious. Really nice indoor and out door aitting area. I will stop one day definitely for trying foods.
t. t.
What a place!, perfect spot for a walk, run, kayak, boat trip, dog walking, had a great time, plenty of room outside for a get together, they have their own beers which where tasty, unfortunately it was full booked for food so that was disappointing, so I'd suggest booking.. staff where great, there was a lady with blonde hair, maybe the manager ? She was so nice and attentive, so thanks to her! I would definitely recommend a stop if your passing through 👌🏽
W. R.
Great location. Friendly, helpful staff. Shame about the below average food. BLT was drowned in mayonaise, sweet potato fries were a small portion for the price and nothing special.
K.
Lovely walk in the local area followed up with pint of Guinness and chips right on the bank of the river Wey. Perfect.
A. F. d. P.
We started off with a very rich , melted Camembert and toast. Absolutely sublime… Then, as a main course, we had the Sunday roast, followed by a delectable sticky toffee pudding and vanilla ice cream. Plenty parking, dog and kids friendly, makes the spacious outdoor area a definite winner. When you sit outside, you have a lovely view of the Wey River Canal and everything and everyone in and around it. Chris, our waiter, was super professional and efficient, and ran around to serve us well… I will definitely recommend this glorious establishment for any occasion.
D. H.
A nice, large, and rxtremely popular pub in a lovely location alongside the Wey Navigation Canal at Pyreford, adjacent to Pyreford Lock. It serves a good selection of lunch and evening meals at reasonable prices, has two large car parks and a large outdoor seating area in addition to comfortable indoor areas.
K. B.
Very nice food and dessert and great first time at The Anchor for my wife and I...
P. B.
First trip back after the refurb. All looking great, particularly the conservatory area where the big fire has gone making it less cramped. Food was superb, as was the service we received from Holly, who did an excellent job particularly considering she is new to hospitality. Looking forward to our next visit.
L. L.
Great place. Bookings needed for eating as they have shortage of chefs. You can still have drinks in the sunny terrace watching narrow boat passing and using the lock.
R. K.
Had a drink by the canal, lovely place, dog friendly and well run.
P. M.
Located at Pyford Lock on the river Wey, it is a welcome sight after a walk along the Wey toepath, enjoying the local countryside. The pub itself is very clean (including the toilets). The staff are welcoming, the standard of cuisine excellent, and at a fair price. The meal was ample and delivered quickly. I would highly recommend and will definitely return.
J. S.
Great location, plenty of seating and fantastic selection of beers. Can be very busy so best visited off peak.
S. S.
A lovely country pub (from a Londoner's perspective) situated on the bank of the Way River canal. Owned by the brewers of Badger, it naturally has good ale and now a lager on offer.
We enjoyed serval pints along with the Steak pie and Ham, eggs and chips. Nothing fancy, but good solid food, served quickly and efficiently.
K. D.
Lovely waterside pub. Only had a drink so can't comment on food but lovely setting with lots of outdoor seating.
G. P.
Shame they were only taking food orders for those that had booked in advance via the app. Lovely location with a great outside areas, with plenty of seating, however I sat outside could only buy drinks.
G. J.
Lovely pub in a beautiful setting. Would recommend booking a table if dining especially at the weekends. Good food and friendly staff.
B. B.
Beautiful location - stunning actually. We had great service and the food was pretty decent
S. R.
Lovely pub , great location , its a shame they don't do food unless you have booked a table , lovely sitting outside watching the boats go through the lock and the ducks swimming by
M.
Ok...staff lovely. Venue in a lovely setting. Shame we were too late for roast and the meal and some of the drinks I ordered were not available.
C. D.
Such a great location for a pub. Enjoyed our delicious meal whilst watching the narrowboat's pass through the lock. I had the chicken Caesar burger which was really tasty. My only grumble is that it should perhaps be served with a steak knife to cut through the thick chicken breast. Other than that it was perfect!
A. B.
Pleasant location beside Pyford lock on the Wey navigation. Service very quick and food very good. Car parks for the pub, quite a narrow road leading to the pub with a narrow bridge.
M. M.
Shared a jolly good lunch today, helpful pleasant staff, and delightful location
Will certainly return. Prices ok for good food.
L. S. S.
It's been a four or five years since I've been here. And the last experience wasn't that great. But today I was pleasently surprised. The standard of the food has improved. The service too. I tried the steak pie which was tasty. The whitebait was good too. But H & W burger overcooked and tough though.
P. W.
A great pub, surprisingly excellent menu and food, lots of seating indoors and out. Pretty location by the canal.
C. B.
Very popular place. River running next to it gives it a relaxing atmosphere. Ducks can be fed which is lovely for small children. Can get very busy. Tasty food.
P. R.
Absolutely beautiful place right on the river. Very busy just after midday. Probably wise to book if eating
L. A.
If The Anchor Pub was in the centre of Woking it would be a perfectly good pub. What made it special for me was the quiet (ish) canalside location beside a working lock.
K. S.
Great food staff very good and helpful were with friends and it's a great venue to use as a meet up place
D. H.
Always a busy Lunch, so always book a table in advance. Great food and a range of drinks.
S. S.
Lovely staff, good food and a lovely setting. Also a large free car park. Perfect
J. R.
Delightful setting with helpful staff and tasty, well-presented food. The piece de resistance is the Chocolate and Orange Torte 🥧🍊
R. M.
Beautiful place for lunch or dinner. Even though they were busy, they accommodated us and found us a table. Service was quick, and the food was great. Minimal but varied menu. The view of the river is beautiful and makes for a lovely walk before or after your food (or drinks)
R. A. B.
Beautiful pub at the side of a canal lock. Nice outdoor seating, dog friendly and nice food!
J. T.
This pub is on the Wey Navigation system. The food is excellent and the beer great. The view of the passing narrow boats and the lock is interesting. This is really worth a visit. The service also was prompt and cheerful.
I. W.
Beautiful location and pub. Food menu is limited but very good.
P. B.
I live close by so I'm here fairly often. The location is second to none right by the canal with a big car park. The food isn't going to win any prizes but it's perfectly good and value for money. Service is pretty quick too. They also have a decent range of beers. Well worth a visit.
R. P.
Lovely setting, good food and drink very pleasant staff.
n. p.
Lovely place for Summer day out and good Pub Lunch.. please make sure Kitchen closes at 1800 hours
P. M.
Perfect place for a Sunday roast, overlooking the slow flow of boats navigating the lock. Good quality, tasty food, nicely presented. Table service was good, and they fitted us in even though they were busy. Nice range of non-alcoholic drinks (Seedlip, three beers etc.), and ideally situated at the end of a nice 6k circular walk.
A. H.
Fully expect this place to shut down again soon. Aside from a good location, the service is awful, and the food average and overpriced.
Get the staff trained!!
B. W.
Nice outdoor terrace by the river but very disappointed with the portion size of the average tasting triple cooked chips at £4 - barely 15 chips!
T. D.
It was nice, the only issue was that we were not able to have a roast outside and the staff seemed slightly confused as to what you could and couldn't have outside.
Would go back but just wish the full menu was available everywhere.
M. B.
Good food and nice atmosphere and out waiter was very nice and efficient
G. A.
Good location by the canal with lots of space with great seating. Beers and wines are good and staff are friendly.
G. P.
Now this is a good pub. Great food, beer, and service.
J. B.
Lovely pub by the canal. Romantic when enjoying wine outside at night
E. C.
Such a lovely traditional pub. Excellent views of the river, bridge and lock.
S. C.
Nice pub, great location. Really relaxing. Great for a quiet night out.
D. M.
Good food, and a great location to watch barges in the canal. Interesting to see how the locks are operated. But book early as Sunday lunches are very popular.
J.
Really nice food, fish was amazing.
Pudding was great but I'd of preferred a slightly sharper lemon tart, 10/10 on the brownies from him
M. R.
Lovely place to chill after work,
Staff were a dream!
Awesome job guys
p.
Very nice terrace but very safe beers, menu etc
L. C.
Very nice afternoon with my family enjoying some lunch. Will definitely visit again in the summer when the weather is warmer and we can take our daughter outside.
A. B.
Food could have been better beef tough vegetables cold good Yorkshire pudding and roast potatoes .
A. M.
Lovely location, good food.
s. b.
I can highly recommend The Anchor at Pyrford Lock it is a lovely pub in an amazing setting. The food is delicious, the staff are very pleasant and efficient. The ambience is great. They are really trying hard to give people a great experience when they visit. I shall definitely be going back soon.
E. R.
Very nice atmosphere, friendly staff and a wide variety of drinks. Eaten here once before (a while ago) and the food is also delicious. A wonderful place to stop if you're walking along the River.
A. M.
Super service from Chris, proper British customer service. Beautiful day in the sun by the Canal. Would definitely recommend.
P. B.
Exceptional place for outdoor drinking. Food is ok, Sunday dinners are good. Kids meals are good value. My son had the burger on he children's menu and it was exactly the same as the adult burger.
J. S.
Sadly, no chef available so no food. Unable to say what their ears are.like. Check ahead if you want to eat.

Beautiful place, right by the water - with a huge outdoor terrace. Have not tried the food - so cannot say anything about that, but you'd be hard placed to find a nicer spot when the sun is shining, to take a beer or two.
D. W. (.
An excellent location combined with great tasting, beautifully cooked food and lovely Badger beers combines to make this a place I have to recommend a visit to. Equally good for a quick drink in the afternoon or a dinner sat out as the sun sets by the side of the navigation. I'm looking forward to coming mid winter to sit by the log burner and look out at whatever the elements can throw at us!
M. V. G.
Nice cozy place for lunch with friends. Delicious food and atmosphere.
C. T.
Beautiful pub. Great food. In ANOB. Great for a day out
d. s.
Really nice place for great food and drink and with a great atmosphere ,staff are friendly and welcoming and very nice outside on a sunny day next to the river wey..
A gorgeous place 😍
B. J.
Lovely pub in a stunning serene location. Had a table by the water in the evening sunshine. Staff were very accomodating but food wasn't the best. However I'd definitely go back and give it it another chance. Great in summer to sit out by the lock or looked to have a fantastic fore place in the conservatory for the winter months.
M. B.
Great position by the river. The food is good and the service is ok.
N. M.
Lovely location. Friendly young staff. Well worth a visit.
L. R.
Great food, went early evening so no waiting time. Staff friendly and helpful. Great location
A. G.
Pretty river side pub with a nice ambience, food and service. Hospitality was very good. Social distancing maintained. Me and my friends we all like the food and drinks. This pub is near/on the national trust property. So you can enjoy a nice walk around the pub.
T. B.
Lovely setting. Good ale, poor staff overworked for the amount of covers.
E. W.
Lovely venue and welcome after a long new year's day walk. One slight shame was no preparedness to offer food to the casual visitor (bookings only). Covid restricted staffing clearly did not help
K. S.
Great customer service and atmosphere. Thoroughly enjoyed our date night and pud!
P. G.
A lovely situated pub restaurant. Great food selection and excellent service. Prices reasonable.
m. g.
Love the place Have not tried food yet just the drinks.
M. B.
Steak pie, burger and steak and fries
All 10/10.... worth a visit.....
C. H.
Stunning location by the lock but they don't take cash for some weired reason.
A. Z.
Beautiful place located in a picturesque spot. Staff is very friendly, food was great.
B. F.
Had a really lovely evening out at The Anchor. It’s a beautiful pub in a beautiful setting. The food was delicious, with great vegan options, and the service outstanding. Thank you so much to our waiter Christopher who provided the best service I’ve had anywhere in years - he’s a great credit to the establishment. We will definitely return and I would highly recommend.
T. V. T.
Tea and cake on a Sunday evening with the wonderfully friendly and welcoming Emily behind the bar. 💕

Great location on a sunny day by the canal. Service good, staff great.
A. B.
Decent food, lovely looking pub. Did come out smelling like a bonfire though as they have a massive woodburner in the middle of the restaurant!
M.
Superb pub, food and staff. Had a lovely meal there. We had 3 dogs with us who thoroughly enjoyed the dog ice-cream they sold!
L.
We loved the food and the atmosphere. Excellent fish&chips and beer!
A. E.
Lovely tables by the river. Good service. Decent food.
F. M.
Lovely food and location . Beautiful views and the inside of the pub is warm and rustic . Service whilst polite was a bit lack lustre.
E. R.
Delicious food and really nice by the river outside. Only downside was being bitten by the midges but that isn't the pub's fault :)
I had the burger and my dog had a doggy ice cream.
P. P.
Cracking pint of beer and excellent BLT cob with chips for lunch - recommended
J. D.
Lovely pub with great food. Right by the lock and canal. Friendly staff.
M. S.
Nice place , not serving food if not pre-booked.
T. E.
Sat inside, great choice of food and drink. My pie was gorgeous and so filling. Thatchers Zero was delicious and I had 2 and still drove ! Constant traffic along the Wey and through the lock was entertaining. Will definitely return.
N. L.
Great location and tasty food. You must order online and pay prior to seating. Extensive menu, including exotic combinations, such as the vegetarian Bhaji burger. Full of flavors, nightmare to squeegee to eat (tried cutting). Portions are not as big as the price, but tasty. If you don't reserve a table online, you will end up on the outside seating by the canal (can be damp cold, bring warm fleeces) but lovely views while waiting for the food. 2 huge car parks. Inside tables artistically placed here and there. The conservatory area was popular, personally it looked too crowded for comfort. Very friendly staff, a plus here. The ordering system was confusing, thou they give you a step by step card, on how to order. A car park next to the pub and another big one by the main entrance, however used for walkers to the canal/forest trail path. Open weekends at the moment. Please check.
M. O.
Great food, good selection of beers and 5* service
G. G.
Kind and attentive service, quality chips and nice arancini. Would be a great spot in summer but equally good for a cosy refuge in winter. Thanks guys
A. G.
Excellent service and food, caring and accomodating, great steaks, burgers and deserts. Perfect place to finish your visit after RHS Wisley.
S. B.
English breakfast, bright sunny morning, sat beside a pretty canal, feeding toast to the ducks. Bliss. (Breakfast 9am - 11am)
N. G.
Really fantastic place to eat or have a drink. Fantastic canal walk for the dogs and the pub will set your pup's up with a bowl of water on arrival
Fantastic vegan burger options and lovely views
Highly recommend!
S. M.
Great food .dog friendly pub.
Great location on the river
F. M.
Great place,
Food was amazing and the views are lovely
V. P.
Arrived yesterday for an alfresco lunch with family. Enjoyed quality freshly cooked food with exceptional service especially by Apoorva, our table waitress. Would recommend this pub . Will definitely return.
R. P.
Lovely atmosphere and fantastic Roast.
Advise to book if you want inside table with a Roast dinner as gets very busy.
N. F.
Excellent food, gets extremely busy over the weekend. Go for pie!
M. C.
Really lovely place to relax and chill with just the sound of an occasional barge chugging past
I. W.
Stopped for a new year's Day drink, plenty of out side seating, pleasant out look , big car park, a few more draft bitters would be nice, larger drinkers well taken care of.
C. P.
I wasn't able to book a table ,but we still went for our favourite walk along the canal .
When we arrived at the Anchor we did notice some tables empty and asked it there were any chance we could stay for a drink .
We were directed to the young lady dealing with the bookings .
What a delight member of staff she was and thanks to her we were soon seated and enjoying every moment .
Nothing was too much trouble and we were made to feel really welcome .
We have never been disappointed on all the occasions we have visited the Anchor and that evening was just as special .Thanks to you all ,see you again soon
D.
The Anchor is a lovely pub set right on the canal of Byford, it has a beautiful family friendly atmosphere, outstanding views of the canal, outdoor seating, ( DOGS WELCOME ) friendly service, great selection of beers & wines, the 5 star rating I’ve given is for service and the location and views (NOT THE FOOD ) which is such a great shame!!!!!
B. M.
Lovely pub in a superb location and food was yummy, but not enough people working behind the bar and big queues everytime you go up to order.
J. Y.
Very nice place... Scenery is beautiful and calm environment but unfortunately the food was not too great, was quite basic but will deffo return for drinks.
S. S.
Service was amazing! We had a little waiting time as we didn’t book but we were in within 20 minutes of waiting on a busy Friday afternoon! Nadine took us to our table and was so inviting I haven’t felt this welcome at a pub in a long time! Food was incredible, we had the vegetable daahl & steak & tangle pie! Will be coming back very soon! AMAZING FOOOD!! One of our new faves!
L. D.
Let us have table and drinks for an.hoir despite having not booked in advance. Very good covid rules being followed. Staff were lovely and even filled up some water bottles happily for our students (Duke of Edinburgh expedition). A beautiful location to have a drink!
E.
Nice pub on the Wet Navigation. Lots of outdoor seating. Especially good for a hot summer's day. Now serving ice cream.
T. M.
Good food, service and well organised place as ever. Would recommend. Nothing much changed apart from layout inside. Still a top spot
P. P.
Best roast potatoes I've had in ages! Lovely location and staff. Highly recommend.
M. “. U.
Lovely location and outside space. We had booked for Sunday lunch which was very nice. We went for a walk along the canal and when returned, though we didn't have another booking, the manager found us an outside table to have a drink at as the Restaurant already our contact details.
C. T.
Lovely food and the people serving were faultless. It was a very happy evening and the team there could not have done more to make us feel comfortable, which in the midst of a pandemic is no easy task.
When booking the table, the email confirming the booking was the best I've seen calling out their covid policy, top marks for being so clear and organised.
L. W.
The location is the best, adjacent to the lock and canal with two decent car parks but this is part of its downfall. In the summer this pub has a long queue for drinks and food and in the winter it's almost empty. Food has always been a little hit and miss and lacks the real quality to be called a gastropub but has improved gradually over the last 2 years. Good selection of beers but a little pricey.
M. L.
Exceptionally helpful staff, lovely roast dinner, a beer and desert. Lovely to be able to get out and eat out in a covid 19 secure venue with good distance between tables and very attentive staff. A perfect end to a walk and lovely Sunday lunch. Brilliant.
J. S.
Had lunch here today. It was very hot, yet the staff coped really well. It was very busy but our food came really quickly and my tofu and roast veg salad was delicious. Everyone else enjoyed their food too. It's a fantastic setting on the canal. Would highly recommend it.
A. G.
Fantastic food and such a lovely setting
T. P.
Lovely place to have a drink by the river.
C. B.
Lovely location. Reasonable prices but limited nenu. Good parking.
A. S.
It is open today (Tuesday), even though Google says it’s not! Also it was open yesterday (Monday) cause I phoned and asked, again even though Google said it was closed. Very happy that it is open after a 3 hour hike along the canal/river.
J. S.
Warm and cosy pub with food. Dog friendly!
B. C.
Good food and great service.
G. D.
Absolutely stunning service, my friend who has been a waitress was also very impressed. Beautiful location and interior, and great food too. Lovely place to have a family meal or smart-ish lunch/dinner.
M. S.
Beautiful setting, lovely country pub, just minutes from the busy A3. Staff are friendly and atmosphere is lovely. Would've given 5 stars but the food was a little slow, however it was a busy Sunday.
Have been here many times for food and drink. Will return many times in the future.
L. R.
Been here twice for food, beautiful pub with a great atmosphere, lots of people with dogs sitting outside.
The pub is along the river bank and it’s popular In the sunshine as it has lots of outdoor seating.
The food is fantastic, I had a cheese burger one time which was delicious and Sunday roast which was equally delicious! They serve a great non- alcoholic rose on ice too. The outdoor menu is different to the indoor menu.
All the staff are friendly, the toilets are really clean. And they even have little extras like dog ice cream and biscuits and duck food available for purchase. It’s very family friendly lots of family’s with young children or older grandparents.
The conservatory area was lovely to eat in as it’s warm very light and had a nice view of the river.
C. P.
Lovely place in a beautiful setting right on the river Way, with very nice decor. Good but few beers, full fat coke not on tap 'bottles only' but has the low sugar cokes on tap. Didnt eat on this occasion but will the next time we go as the menu looks really nice.
R. S.
Lovely place but not enough staff today to cope with a very busy restaurant. Late with our table and limited food availability at 3pm. Service was fab and as attentive as they could be under pressure. All in all a good job. Thanks guys.
J. M.
Service was good , friendly staff ,food good ,
A. C.
The Anchor was okay, sadly the staff had not been briefed on either the menu or beers etc available.
Though the puddings made up for it, well presented and tasty. Thought that they had come from another kitchen!
K. P.
Called at The Anchor as just passing after a good afternoon at the RHS Wisley.
Good beer and food but despite not busy service was a little slow. Interesting location by the river, lock and bridge!!
Y. P.
It was a very pleasant lunch on the banks of the river.
M. C.
Very nice food, great prices with nice atmosphere and lovely staff
M. O.
Beautiful location and fair selection of beers. Did not have food so cannot comment
A. W.
Amazing location, lovely spacious pub, pleasant greeting, sub par food and slightly joyless waitress.
Vegan food fail.
I had the hummus baguette. The hummus was dry and tasteless, no tomato in the baguette making it even dryer.
Pretty mean portion of thick cut chips too. Nearly ordered second but knew they'd be same miserly portion.
This has always been a halfway lunch stop on our way to the south coast.
I think this meal killed the tradition.
Shame really.
j. A.
Great location
Nice food
Would recommend it
C. G.
I love this gastro more than most, the setting by the canal is just perfect and the food is really nice been visiting this place for years and never disappointed.
Service has got a little slow nowadays but not put me off
O. M.
Lovely pub with good food in a great location. Loads of tables outside but very busy on any nice day. The 2 car parks also fill-up so finding a space requires perseverance. Service staff were nice today despite how busy it was. Loses a star on the long bar queues on busy days.
D. O.
Great place to come for a drink and let the world go by, has a good choice of real ale
m. b.
Beautiful location. Staff pleasant was offered indoor or outdoor. Outdoor you collect your own cutlery etc and go to the bar to order. Food was wonderful. Choices in size on some meals. Price very reasonable. Dogs welcome in the outside area. Good sized car park. Well worth a visit in my book. Would recommend booking if going evening or weekends
L. F.
Had to leave a review as had such great service, especially from Lily-Anne, but just got home and realised tip wasn’t included in the bill - so we’ll be back to tip double next time! Great food & service as always
S. M.
I love the view and the experience! A hidden jem
J. S.
The food was good and we had a good view where we sat. We had a young man from Carlisle serve us. He was friendly, helpful - excellent.
D. D.
Perfect place to relax on a sunny day or warm evening.
M. 2.
Went there with my boyfriends. Lovely ducks but Swan aggressive so watch out. His name is Dave.
L. B.
Beautiful location by Pyrford Lock and nicely tucked away from the A3 but not too far for easy access.
The menu has standard pub food but good sized portions and pleasant enough.
Easy to park in two convenient car parks.
Overall, worth a visit any time of year but do book first to ensure a table.
K.
We visited with friends on a very busy Easter weekend and the kitchen was backed up with over an hour waiting time after ordering. (The kitchen needs to keep the waiters informed as to lengthy service times so they can warn the customers when ordering). The food when it did arrive was edible but uninspiring pub chain food and small portions for the price. Two of us ordered whitebait. These should still be silvery with a light golden batter when served but they were over fried, dark brown and skeletal in appearance. I would have been interested to see the fish before they were cooked. On a plus side the waiter was charming and efficient and drink service was good. We would certainly recommend it for a drink sitting outside in a lovely location on a sunny day. They should do a Ramsey and drastically cut the current menu, offering fewer courses that they can do really well as it is a shame if standards drop when the kitchen is under pressure. We will give them another chance on a quieter day.
J. C.
Food good , service good at a very reasonable cost. Makes a great day out as the setting is lively and offers a nice walk along canal. Theres loads of seating outside so you can eat outdoors in Summer.
T. H.
Nice place and good views of the canal. Service was very slow today, looked like there were only 2 servers and they were pretty busy. Food was tasty and perfect temperature. Would go back here again.
J. E.
Pub warm & friendly. Food good but no Chicken on the menu except burgers. Most people enjoys a roast on a Sunday, but not everybody likes beef, so a choice would have been nice. Staff very helpful.
J. G.
Beautiful place for a lunch and a walk. Pub had decent food and selection. Good for our baby too, hug chairs available. Nice staff. Would worry with toddlers - if you don't have constant hawk eyes on your kids it could be dangerous with the river and lock.
m. a.
The Anchor is beautiful. Away from any big roads, right by the lock and the canal, surrounded by the Wisley and Pyrford golf courses. It's a wonderful place to enjoy a pint, G&T or jug of Pimm's.
What lets it down a little is the food. It's not bad, but the game has moved on.
You get your pub classics, fish and chips, burger, steak etc... But they're all a bit flat and just ok.
But if you just want an afternoon break on a sunny day, then this is the perfect place
G. D.
First time here. A very warm welcome, and lovely 'jumbled' furniture, which added to a nice comfortable feel. If I was a dog lover this would have made a great place to visit! Sadly I'm terrified of dogs, so spent the evening with my husband on dog watch in case any of them went walkies!
Our starter was prawn and avocado cocktail, which we both thoroughly enjoyed. It had little bits in like tiny pieces of peppers, and it was delicious!
Had salmon steak with a 'hash brown' style of potato, which came with a shredded cabbage/leek mix. Sadly, I was disappointed overall with the meal. The salmon was a bit overcooked, and the potato had bits in which I think was capers, which I hate so had to pick them all out! The menu didn't tell you this, otherwise I wouldn't have ordered it. The meal was very dry, and I would have ordered a sauce if I had known. I had a glass of house red, which went down a treat. My husband had a delicious burger, but would have preferred big chips and not skinny fries that it came with. Our server, James, was very friendly and chatty, and when I informed him of my fear of dogs, advised they have a conservatory for adult humans only! Shame it was closed that evening, but we will go again and ask for the conservatory next time!
p. s.
Food was amazing, tried the the falfel burger, great vegan options.....tasty and two filling patties. Serve with amazing garlic mayo for your dipping pleasure! Beers and Ales to suit any palate! Loved my visit....all the way from Scotland. 😊
R. T.
Food on the pricy side but location is excellent
S. W.
Staff very friendly and the food was excellent.
İ. Ü.
Perfect food, perfect hospitality and stunning surroundings...
M. B.
A traditional pub set on the canal with large garden and extensive menu. The food was very good, and all the meals served to our group looked good. Overall experience impacted as they were trying to serve too many people/tables that the staff simply couldn't keep up with. 2hrs to receive one course was too long and we left shortly after.
E. F.
Location is great, however food quality just isn't good enough, for tastes quite bland. Best to come for a drink on a nice day. However, when we came here today with a dog, they had no dog bowl for water. That was a real disappointment. Lots of people visit here with dogs so they should do better.
L. E.
Second time I've been here, the first time was for dinner one Friday evening, the food was excellent as was the service.
Today I was there for Sunday lunch. The service was very good, despite it being incredibly busy. The food was great with decent sized portions.
It's a beautiful location so well worth stopping by. It's always seems very busy so be patient with them.
J. M.
Second time I've eaten at this pub, food has been pretty poor for the price both times, however, it's on a great location, staff are well trained and friendly, service is fast. It's a great place to meet for a few drinks in a lovely setting, if you're eating be prepared for a forgettable meal served by lovely staff.
L. S.
I had a wonderful evening with my wife here on Valentine's Day, we arrived 5pm so it wasn't very crowded. Staff was very welcoming and helpful, the food came relatively fast. Food and dessert was great, as well as the atmosphere. Totally recommend.
T. S.
Although this pub is part of the Hall and Woodhouse chain and therefore, as a chain pub, I should hate it, somehow they have managed to make it special. Partly it has a brilliant location but the river but the staff were engaging, the food was tasty and the bill was fair. We all enjoyed our meal and left feeling satisfied.
D. H.
Very friendly but like so many places now it's more of a restaurant than a pub. Vodka and diet plus a pint of Tanglefoot £12.50, where will it end ? Oh and a packet of crisps which were probably £2 to be fair !
M. V.
A great location with great staff. Outside right next to the canal on a quiet country road.
I always find you find the best restaurants the way they cook the steaks... Asked for rare and it actually came as rare and the taste if the steaks were magnificent.
The dessert choice is not massive (no cheese board) but good quality.
Plenty of parking available right next to the pub but also a massive car park across the road.
H. K.
My partner and I went for my 50th. I've been before and i choose this place for a birthday meal. The Staff make you feel welcome. They were very attentive. It's clean and homely. There are beautiful views of a river and it's well lit outside at night. There is a car park yards away. There is a good variety of food and drink. There is seating outside but it was too cold for that! I just love the real log fire. It just adds to the warm cosy atmosphere. Would I go again? Sure would .
N. B.
It always ALMOST there but often a disappointment. The Maitre D' clearly enjoyed being a big fish in a small pond and was making all customers who hadn't booked aware that she was the key to them having any chance of getting a table in her terribly busy and amazing restaurant.
All in all, its not bad...but wouldn't rush here. If their location wasn't so picturesque I probably wouldn't make the effort.
m. w.
Disappointing visit. Unable to provide any food despite being very quite. It was an impromptu visit, but still. If you can have a seat for drinks, why not a light snack!
Doesn't encourage us to return any time soon.
W. A.
I honestly don't normally give poor reviews, but the hostess at the front door was so incredibly rude to our table upon arrival. We got there and not only did she make a mistake with our booking name, she was patronising and then didn't even apologise after realising it was at no fault of ours. The locals swimming in the lake were pulling each others pants down in front of the restaurant and being outright obnoxious running in and out of the toilets to get changed together. Really not a good look for a family place. Only reason I'm giving three stars is because our waitors were great and on the ball.
S. P.
The Anchor is one of my favourite Sunday-afternoon-in-the-sun pubs. Lovely to sit in the garden next to the river and watch the canal boats going through the lock.
The food is good and a decent price too.
The only downside is that it can get very busy, especially on a lovely warm summer's day so do make sure to reserve a table.
g. p.
The food has improved of late, some reasonable beers and wines, service is paced just right and friendly, the location can't be improved, situated right on the canal. It's very dog friendly, some tables are for dog families, but you need to book a dog friendly table. Gets ferociously busy if the sun even dares to make an appearance
S. N.
an awesome place. Served immediately by friendly staff at the bar - enjoyed our drinks out side by the river. WEnt indoors for the meal, asked to be reseated in another place as where we were sitting was rather draughty - that was no trouble at all to them...we were reseated very quickly in a lovely dining area in the conservatory. The waitress for our table was very attentive, food arrived quickly, nice and hot, beautifully cooked and delightfully fresh. We were looked after very well indeed. Large meals, well worth the price. WE plan to come back again next month
I. M.
Lovely atmosphere. Nice quiet river flowing with lovely breeze. Food is also not so expensive compare to high end restaurants. Can go out with kids and family to dine out.
Over all very satisfied with experience and services. Definitely must go place if around.
p. n.
Beautiful setting, great service and on finding I had a tough steak it was replaced without a quibble and taken off the bill,my companions all enjoyed their food very much
D. W.
Great location on the edge of a water way and lock with boats moving up and down past the pub. Lovely food and nice friendly staff.. will visit again when the sun shines.
J. C.
Four of us enjoyed a leisurely lunch at the Anchor today. We sat in the conservatory to start with and later sat outside by the river for drinks, watching the swans with their young and many other birds both in the water and in the trees on the opposite river bank. The food was great, service excellent and the staff were friendly and helpful. Covid restrictions such as masks, check in, social distancing and a one way system are in operation and customers are asked to pre-book. The Anchor is in a lovely setting, is close to RHS Wisley and well worth a visit.
S. K.
We went for Sunday Lunch. Our table was booked for 3pm, unfortunately they had sold out of their roast dinners, except for 2 roast pork meals left, which they kept back for us. My girlfriend and I had the steak, with triple cooked chips, it was cooked really well. The place is busy so book first.
M. C.
Lovely venue food and service good
C. G.
A lovely pub next to the water, there was plenty of tables both inside and out, the service was quick and efficient. I never ate there so I can't rate the food but it looked quite nice. Great to stop off and grab refreshments after your walk .
P. S.
I have always meant to review The Anchor but kept forgetting, now I will give them a fully deserved 5. The reason is that this place has improved enormously with Christian as Manager. The menu is smaller, the quality much higher, check out their Chicken Caesar char grilled fillet burger, really good and the customer service is second to none, how do they manage to serve people within 5 mins of ordering that's incredible. Go try The Anchor out, I cannot see anyone being disappointed. Good luck to them in 2020.
M. E.
Beautiful location.
Really busy on the sunny day visited and sadly a long queue to buy drinks. Decided not to have food as had waited 20 minutes for drink. Probably staff shortgage otherwise everything excellent. Staff very pleasant. Highly Recommended.
A. C.
Went with 7 of us and a dog on a Saturday night for dinner. A nice pub by the canal, you can sit out side which has a nice view. Everyone seemed pleased with their meal and the price was right too. Very dog friendly, dogs all around including our own. There are water bowls and dog treats to give your dog. There are two car parks so can fit a lot of people in the pub. Would happily go again.
D. G.
Great location beside canal. Nice interior with interesting detail like the ecclesiastical carving on the bar. Had a great meal, grilled salmon. Rating would have been 5 but found serving staff a bit offhand, had to ask twice to get a glass of water
W. L.
Great food and lovely views
M. N.
lovely staff bite to eat a walk and a coffee on return...warm and cosy ....
J. K.
On a lovely warm summer evening our first post-lockdown meal away from home was a delight. Al fresco service was attentive and excellent. The dinner was delicious. Well done in current circumstances, The Anchor! The location at Pyrford Lock is brilliant.
R. V.
Lovely looking pub in great location by river wey. Lots of green around very tranquil. Imagine it gets very busy but lots of car parking space. We just stopped for a coffee after a walk so did not eat or stay long. First impression very favourable and staff welcoming and efficient.
R. N.
A great location and place to dine. It has started to serve mass produced food and can be variable in quality.
y. t.
Lovely pub by the river Wey. Great food good location, very peaceful
M. D.
Great location, just alongside the river and very nice pub. We probably were not lucky the day we went as most food on the menu was not available anymore at the time we arrived (6pm), the food was nice but quite expensive for what you have on your plate (not a lot!) and they forgot to bring one item to our table. Also, they didn't have ketchup anymore for us, but the table next to us had some a little bit later. Maybe avoid Sundays when it is sunny?
P. T.
Decor and surroundings need some tlc but still a great location in the summer
M. L.
Wonderful location. Food choice disappointingly limited. Quick service, food looked great but flavours also disappointing. Too much greasy batter on fish and and although the Buddha Bowl looked amazing there were too many overpowering flavours which masked the more delicate ones.
J. B.
I think this pub deserves 5 stars. It's in a lovely location next to the canal and lock. There're plenty of swans, geese and ducks around this quiet spot sandwiched between golf courses. What makes this place satisfying is it's well staffed, has a good menu and decent draught beers and local ales. The food is upmarket decent pub-grub and there is also a car park opposite. Overall cleanliness and service were very good on a busy Saturday afternoon. Suitable for families. Recommended.
M. B.
Lovely rustic ambience in a convivial setting on the river Wey. Spacious ceiling indoors with wooden beams, plenty of light, cosy bar area. Large outdoor terrace on the river is pleasantly comfortable. The food is excellent and a variety of drinks on offer.
M. K.
Beautiful location, service a bit short staffed.
P. L.
Enjoyed a nice relaxed lunch by the river watching the boats and ducks yesterday. Friendly service and nice food. Would definitely return if in the area.
G. J.
It's okay, poor service and low quality of food can be masked by its great location. I suppose being the only pub in that area (that stretch of canal), means it can afford to be slightly complacent. And of course on a sunny, warm summer's day it's absolutely packed. I'd say that was more down to the location, rather than its service and quality of food.
L. H.
Great ambiance, good pub food, staff lovely and helpful. Messed up the coffees, but otherwise a good experience.
J. S.
Stopped for a drink whilst driving, found this pub to be very nice.
I normally judge a venue by the state of the cleanliness of the tables service and of course the washrooms. I have been to many "upmarket" establishments only to be let down by the lack of hygiene and poor state of tables not cleaned, washrooms in a poor state etc.
I found the Anchor ticked all the boxes!
Friendly staff , clean throughout, good food, good service, plenty of parking, and of course the location, set on the banks of the river Wey right by a lock.
I will certainly return to the venue!

Popped in for a coffee and cake before the lunch time rush the staff and service friendly and good standard. We did not have lunch today but wanted to see how things were.
Last year our experience wasn't so good at lunch time, cold food and long wait for it. There has been a change in the management of the Anchor as of last September so it will be interesting to see how things go this summer when it gets busy. We were told during very busy periods the menu may be restricted to prevent a recurrence of long waits and cold food.
We will be back to find out as this pub has great memories for us over the 40 or so years of patronage. Single married and with our family.

Beautiful spot, great food, very friendly and helpful staff

Great Sunday dinner . Very large

Great position though precarious road bridge and winding road for very slow careful cars only. Walk or boat there if possible. Food looks lovely. This is a large rural canalside hostelry.

It's lovely to sit by the canal side, watching the barges passing by, with good food, a drink and friendly staff on hand. Dog friendly, our pets have plenty of fresh water too.
Always a favourite venue that never fails to please.

Ate there yesterday afternoon. Lovely staff but the food mediocre. Lovely setting and staff but food lacked... I be back for a drink but thats it.

Good setup for tables outside. Once we hot used to the ordering app all was great. Had a very nice lunch and drinks will go again soon.

You'll be noticing a general trend in the reviews, which I have to agree with.
Stunning location alongside canal boats and lock. Apart from quite a wait to come over to our table for the first time, the service was generally good and friendly.
Alas the food was where The Anchor really falls down - you know the difference between a slow-cooked tender country roast and something dry and chewy? Well the latter is served here.
Keep your culinary expectations low and enjoy the dog walking paradise location!

Food was fine but the way you have to queue for drinks puts you off going for more rounds. Lovely location but change how business operates. It feels like a MacDonalds queuing. Need more staff on, tables weren't cleared outside at all , staff don't collect plates or glasses as they drop off.

Great location, gets very busy especially on lovely days and weekends, if the table is not booked in advance it's outside seating with a long queue for the bar, if seated at the table indoors, the service is ok. The food is pretty standard pub food.

I had been here before so had an expectation. While the decor ,staff etc were still great , the food we ordered came to our table in under 5 minutes. Literally long enough to warm the entire plate in the microwave. I had the steak pie which was burnt on top and the entire meal was very dry . Real shame . The new South African waitress was lovely

This pub gets 3 stars just because of its location. It couldnt be more beautiful sitting outside watching the barges. However the pub itself always seems really disorganised and manic to me. The food is good, but the till system doesn't work at all and there are always massive queues. The dessert range seems to be better for dogs than it does for people!

The last time I visited this pub/restaurant was about 15 years ago.....tonight three friends and I decided we would book a table for an evening meal.
I have to say it was a lovely experience, the staff were lovely, very friendly, polite and knowledgeable about the menu as well as very professional.
The food was lovely and we came away feeling that we had had a really enjoyable evening.
Well done The Anchor.....would definitely recommend...

20p per chip
We had a nice lunch, but it sure was pricy. I'd expect that given the location, but charging extra to have 10 chips with a sandwich was particularly special. Also watch out for the trip hazard on the way out of the toilets.

Great surroundings great lunch, Lily, our waitress was a delight, such fun and really helpful.

Lovely big canal side pub

Great location, food is good but not preferred for vegetarians

Nice pub by the canal
Went for coffee on a quiet Sunday morning while cycling along the canal towpath
Good coffee and muffins!

Came today Good Friday. Did no one tell them it was a bank holiday and the weather forecast was good. We were told there was an hour's wait for food but there was nothing left on the menu we wanted. This has happened before here on sunny days. Please order more food our day was spoilt as we had to then find another pub (they hadn't run out of anything!)

Iconic pub in the 60s and 70s where some of England's finest music icons hung out. Sadly now a bistro pub catering for families. It is in a beautiful spot on the canal. The food is mass-marketed pub fare...OK but nothing special.

The food was delicious and at a great price. The staff were friendly and attentive, if I lived closer I'd surely be going more often.
Worth stopping in for food!

Located next to the canal it is a great place to stop when strolling, there are also 2 car parks if you wish to drive.
This is one of my frequent haunts and have yet to have a bad meal. The fish and chips and burgers are highly recommended along with a large variety of beers.
Other interesting points.
1.) There is a burger van in the outdoor area if you don't want queue at the bar for food.
2.) There bowls of water for dogs.
3.)The venue is wheelchair friendly.
4.) Great views on sunny days.

Have eaten here several times. It's large but cosy and we enjoyed the view. The Lockdown menu is understandably limited, and food was good. Service is a tad slow.

Lovely setting right next to the river. Serves a good beer selection as well as other drinks. Food is pretty good. Has parking spaces as well. Book for food as it does tend to get busy
B. M.
This pub has a high standard and an deal location by the river, parking is ample and free.
Food quality and presentation are excellent,my only criticism is service is a little hit and mis staff wandering around ,seems they have different levels of staff doing various tasks.
Overhaul a good experiance will return.

Great location on the river. They allow dogs in which was good for us as we have two ! Food was average which was a bit disappointing. Service was good . If you like to sit but the river with a drink, ideal on a sunny afternoon 🌞

Beautiful setting at Pyrford Lock. Mum thoroughly enjoyed her lamb medallions (no mean feat., nothing pleases her jaded pallet these days!) The hummus and warm flatbread nibble was lush and my Malaysian aubergine curry not bad. Staff friendly and helpful.

Great location, good food

Steak + Ale pie was very tasty, nut roast was dry and tasteless, fish & chips was good, vegetables a bit mediocre, service was quite slow (although it was a very busy Sunday lunchtime). Friendly staff and really nice location and open yet traditional family pub atmosphere.

We took our daughter, her husband and 2yr old son. Food fantastic. Special menu for toddlers. Lovely by the river. Staff very nice. Will definitely go again

Lovely atmosphere, friendly staff and good meal. Service a little slow but nice waiting staff. Very accommodating for members of our party with severe allergies..

Lovely pub, great food and fantastic location

Such a lovely and cosy pub, great for a stop off after a walk, summer evenings by the water, or for cosy winter evenings. The food here is always great, good vegetarian and vegan options too! The chocolate and coconut torte was a winner! Have been here many times before and will no doubt be coming again. 5 stars!

Having read the other the reviews I think we experienced just about all of them. The setting for the pub is great and the beer garden will be very pleasant on a summer's day. The food was variable. Some of our group had very reasonable food, although others had quite poor offerings.
Service. This is where the pub lets itself down. The Basil Fawlty school of customer service appears to have been used to train the staff. We were made to feel like we were wrong when the vegetarian in the group asked for the main course they ordered not the meat dish they most certainly had not! Then asking for a glass of water or tomato sauce for the chips proved too difficult and these thing had to be chased, repeatedly.
When leaving (or trying to leave) in true Basil Fawlty style we were told we were using the wrong door! We had being trying to use the door that we had come in through, the one that opens directly in to the car park, but instead we were told that the door could no longer be used and we would have to walk to the other end of the pub and exit the far side of the building and walk around the outside of the poorly lit exterior of the pub.
Overall, we went with low expectations, the food was adequate (mainly), and the service is comical. A great setting and if you are not in a hurry could be quite an entertaining meal especially if you go knowing that you will not have anything approaching reasonable customer service.

Not bad, my feeling being, like so many pubs and restaurants, they're struggling to recover after Covid. Will (we all must) continue to support pubs and restaurants.

Pleasant location by Basingstoke Canal. Decent Badger beer and a good light lunch - though what they call cobbs are actually just sandwiches.

Now I’m completely confused. I turned up on spec having paddled a kayak down fro Newark Lock, only to find a sign saying “bookings only”, which staff confirmed as they turned me away - they were “booked up” despite having perhaps a third of tables taken. And then I read a message on their website that “outdoor tables cannot be booked - first come first served”.
Well - which is it?

A lovely riverside park not far from the beautiful village of Wisley. The food is great, with large portions of very tasty food. Staff are extremely welcoming and polite. Book ahead for a weekend, it's such a popular place!

Big modernised pub on canal, by a lock. Large indoor and outdoor seating areas. Service was brisk and pleasant. My food was good. Range of beers, including a few on handpump. about £20 a head for a meal and drink. Just fine.
