Reviews of The Punch Bowl
L. F.
Multiple rooms to this old Inn, good selection of beers and menu was really good to, only had a light lunch but this was tasty.
Air conditioning on which was nice and quick and speedy service from pleasant bar staff.
No complaints would recommend
N.
Great vegan lentil shepherd's pie with veg & gravy. We loved the old tudor style pub decor & ambiance. The only problem was trying to order via the app, which didn't work (a known problem apparently), otherwise we would have given 5 stars.
A.
Not the weatherspoons! By coincidence we ended up in a pub of the same name on the same day.
Very warm inside which was just what was needed. Great atmosphere and full of character, and stooped in history. Supposed relations to Guy Fawkes.
The food looked good, so I might be going back to try one of the famous pies!
L. K.
Lovely pub and the food was lovely and vegetables were so very fresh. Could do with extending the menu a little but thats easily done. The 2 young men at the bar were so friendly and were willing to accomodate our needs. SUCH A NICE COSY PLACE.
D. B.
Came in for a drink and some dinner after a long shift at the hospital and, oh man, was it worth it! The atmosphere and decorations (like all the flags) was so welcoming.
Sophie was really knowledgeable about the drink and food options (I'm so indecisive!) and as for Jay... He's just so incredibly charming! They're both credits to the pub and the food was delicious. Will definitely be coming back when I want to treat myself!
C.
Lovely quaint and historic pub. Very centrally located. Tables become free fairly quickly so worth waiting for seats to free up. Generally people are open to sharing the table. Service is very friendly and good prices. Highly recommended. The mulled wine was lovely
G. L.
Fun cricket facts and ghost stories here. Lots of ghosts we got spooked by a couple of them. Decent pints for weary travellers too. Took the edge off the previous nights shenanigans, helpful staff too and quite a good vibe if you keen to watch sports or just chill in a cute old pub.
M. T.
Food was beautiful. The staff are so friendly and accommodating nothing seemed to much for them. Was lovely to find such a beautiful looking pub I would 100% recommend 😀
N. F.
We didn't quite know what we wanted to eat after trudging the streets of York all day. My fiancé spotted the punch bowl. We walked in & managed to find a seat in the lovely bar area, despite being busy. we had a drink and decided to eat. My partner had ham egg n chips. I wanted the beer bartered haddock, however, disappointingly they had run out. The friendly barman, did offer me an alternative, fish cakes, which I decided to have. Both our meals were nice... accept my partners eggs were both cold.. maybe the ham had cooled them down? Overall it was Nice..
C.
The best Mulled wine! Must try! We had to go back to the pub to have more.
Great fresh foods too.
We tried pie and fish & chips. Great warm pub foods with friendly staffs.
H. S.
So far only visited once but intend to return. It is a lovely, historical, atmospheric pub divided into a series of cosy little rooms, but in a city where there are plenty of those, it was the bar staff that gave this pub the extra factor.
Sadly, pic doesn't show much of the atmosphere but we were they primarily to watch England beat Germany. 😉
B.
I really liked this pub. The lass behind the bar was friendly and the food was lovely. We'll definitely come back.
A. M.
The food was amazing. I had the sea bass and my husband had the buttermilk chicken burger with bacon. Both were excellent. The bartender who took our order was super friendly and great about helping with food allergy information. He also helped to recommend a local ale. We strongly recommend this place.
K. B.
Lovely little pub in York. Staff were very warm and welcoming. Food was superb and arrived quick. Great selection on the menu. Would definitely recommend coming for setting to eat here. When we next in York looking forward to trying something else from the menu!
M. L.
Called in on a visit to York. Food was great loved the place. Staff fantastic quick service polite and most importantly a must do stop on a visit here. The place has character
B. M.
Visited this pub last week with my elderly Dad to get out of the rain whilst enjoying a couple of days in York.
To be fair it's quite nice inside. We only had a drink each and my Dad had a toastie of some description. My coffee and his food were both a bit average, but I would go back and give it another chance from the fuller menu.
C. R.
Just came here for a few ciders during the day but it was a spacious and relaxing area to get away from the crowds. Had no problems whatsoever
K. H.
The food was truly and absolutely delicious! Every dish surprised me when I tried it. I had the tastiest salad I have ever had. The lentil pie, which may sound very simple, was delightfully exquisit. And of course, the Sunday Roast was absolutely classic.
K. T.
One of our must call into places, whenever we visit York. Good atmosphere and just a really great place to relax and have a drink.
They were very accommodating with us, during the Euros when we couldn't find anywhere to watch the match. Great atmosphere and covid safe.
P. W.
Was in York for a few days, & tried out this place. If your after good beer, & a proper pie, you can't go wrong here
F. N.
Lovely welcome,definitely LGBT+GROUP Welcome.
Food menu very inviting, one thing the men toilet at 6pm need to be revisiting for a freshen up.
Lovely staffs.
Thank you.
S. M.
Lovely pub in the heart of York that is our go to place when we visit. The pub has real character. The staff are always friendly and welcoming and there is a great menu. The food is consistently good with a wide selection of dishes.
I. T.
The pub is in the middle of everything, very conveniently located. Great food, went there twice for lunch during our trip to York. Lovely ambiance, pretty decor, and my teenage daughter enjoyed it.
G. T.
Nice old pub with all its wood paneling etc. We visited on a race day, so come the evening the place was packed with folk. Good atmosphere, perhaps a little rowdy in that situation but still good for a laugh. Although we didn’t eat, the food coming out of the kitchen looked good.
Bar staff seemed decent, with good knowledge and attitude.
S. H.
Fantastic place to visit...very historical...Nice coffee ☕️ 👌 😀
j. m.
Went in on a friend's advise . The food was lovely and hot. It was a good size .eat. I had the chicken and chorizo with brocoli and wedge potatoes...delicious.
Reasonably priced Good service very polite friendly staff
C. S.
Had a drink and food here when visiting york last week.great atmosphere.helpful staff member when deciding on which cider to have.food was sausages in yorkshire pudding with mash and onion gravy, bliss, what more could you ask for.my husband had chicken and chorizo which he enjoyed very much.
K. B.
A very nice pub, with wide selection of true ales and other craft goodies. The food was very nice. We had lamb chops for about £14 which was quite a bit for 3 chops with sides, but they were definitely worth it. And beef ale pie which was definitely worth the £10! Definitely can recommend the place with the feeling of historical importance (the punch bowl was used in political gatherings!) and some ghost stories fit perfectly with the overall atmosphere of York.
S. A.
Usually packed but not the day I went in had a very good pint of bitter ,great historical pub in the middle of york well worth a visit.
M. S.
Really nice pub with a cool atmosphere! The lamb hot pot pie was absolutely great and portions are very good (and at fair prices). In addition, the pies menu is wide! There is no table service and sometimes it is very full.. But surely it is worth the wait
S. L.
A beautiful quaint little find in York today! Popped in for some food! Great, speedy and efficient service! It still has all its original features! Very well kept! The food was lovely and definitely hit the spot
T. T.
Stopped for lunch and wasn't disappointed I had the garlic chicken cooked fresh and my son had a burger there was slight miscommunication, but it was sorted we didn't wait long and had great service and friendly staff definitely recommend and visit again.
N. Q.
Lovely pub, warm with great beers. Only tried the triple chips with cheddar and pulled beef and they were great.
b. r.
Good food and drinks, great staff ready to serve.
P. S.
Awesome Great food nice people great look
C. D.
Unfriendly staff. It said the place had ghosts but there was no sign of paranormal activity whatsoever. The food wasn't the best, the burger was quite dry. Not lived up to the expectation
M. T.
We originally went here thinking it was a spoons, then realised it wasn't but that didn't matter, the food was excellent and the staff friendly. Lovely pub with a lovely atmosphere. I would pick this over spoons any day. And the ghost walks start from here but we didn't go on one.
S. P.
We thought this was a Wetherspoons but actually it wasn’t lol. That being said drinks fine and food was ok.
We went for 3 x starters which were ok but all clearly deep fried.
I would go again but not sure about the chicken chunks
S. C.
Such a cool place with an interesting history. The atmosphere is fun and food is great
P. A. A.
One of my favourite places to visit in York! Such a homely and traditional-British-pub feel to it. Great selection of drinks too, and reasonably priced!
N. B.
Only went in for a drink. Had a great time, very quirky pub. Will be back for food, that menu looks fantastic!
B. W.
Very nice pub. No TVs so won't show any football matches, but it's a better atmosphere because of it. Food is reasonably priced, I have a mixed grill with peppercorn sauce for £15.25. There is also a great choice of drinks, especially gins!
Q.
Lovely little pub in the centre of York city not far from York minster, is a little pricey on drinks but charming place to visit. It has been around since the 1600s.
A. J.
Excellent atmosphere and lovely staff. Food was pretty good, a little disappointed in the freshness of the veg but the pie was great!
D. G.
Been in this pub a few times. Dog friendly at the front. Lovely old woody pub. Serves food. Good choice of beers.
K. T.
We had an ale and steak pie and a fish &chips pie was fantastic fish batter looked like it had been cooked on the microwave
m. m.
Nice place with friendly staff unfortunately my Mac,n,cheese bites were a bit on the overdone side
i.
People are kind and the food is great. Coming from an italian visitor, i really enjoyed having a peaceful lunch here.
K. K.
Fantastic pub in a perfect location of central York. Visited in December 2021 and super glad I did. Inside you can feel the history of this very old building, with the staff nice and chatty when during my visit. Has a number of indoor areas plus a few seats right out front, which in warmer weather would be lovely to enjoy watching the passers by.
B. p.
It's one of those nice old pubs in York, plenty of character with a link to Guy Fawkes which we found very interesting, we sat in what I would call the front bar to the left of the entrance and the information was up on the wall, so you can't help but see it.
The staff we're excellent very polite and helpful, we got there around half eleven and food was served from midday, the menus were out on the tables but you can download their app and order your food from your table if you prefer, but we ordered at the bar the old fashioned way. It was quite busy on the day we went but we felt comfortable with the situation, the food was really really good if a bit pricey, but I suppose you can put up with that short term because they have to try and recover their losses somehow.
Would I go back, yes! Without hesitation.
It's a nice place with great staff and very good food.
k.
Nice pub, great meal, had the haggis due to burns promotion
L. o. M.
Went for lunch. There was no specific lighter lunches available so i ordered a steak and ale pie with mash n veg. My partner had fish n chips. Both meals cooked well. Lovely pub. Be better with lighter lunch options
D. B.
Good pub with warm and friendly staff. Good food and cosy seating.
C. O.
Had Christmas Dinner at the Punchbowl, food was great and the table was laid very well. The staff worked really hard considering there was only 3 serving. Always grateful to the people who give up their Christmas day to work so you can have a good time.
K.
Visit here every time I visit York. Such a welcoming, warm place. Love the back room to enjoy a meal which is always of high standard in lovely, historic surroundings. Very accommodating for children during the day also. Always found staff to be very hospitable. See you again soon hopefully!
s. m.
Great pies, loved the lamb shank pie, friendly staff and a good atmosphere.
D. s.
My wife and I stopped here for a few beers and a pie. My wife opted for the chicken pie and I had the duck. We don't normally go for a pie but on this occasion we are glad we did. The staff are polite, the food is cracking and the beer goes down well.
V. F.
Absolutely amazing place hidden gem
E. H.

R. H.
Friendly pub with a good selection of cask ales well worth a visit
E. L.
Enjoyed the food and atmosphere. Lovely staff
M. S.
Seated as soon as we arrived, wonderful staff throughout our visit. Service was quick with drinks almost instantly served. Menu has choices for vegetarian and various palettes. Moderately priced but delicious food with lots of flavour.
Salmon and dill fishcakes, with new potato and salad was a delight, and portion size was perfect.
Combined with a relaxed atmosphere to enjoy it in. I would definitely recommend this.
L. “. F.
We only popped in for a drink, but the place was clean and tidy. Covid rules were adhered to. We ordered/paid for drinks via app, which was quick and painless. Drinks arrived very quickly. Overall it was a nice pub to drink in.
d. f.
Lovely pub good beer very friendly staff
S. P.
Food was excellent you have to go to the bar to order food and steak and ale pie 🥧 was excellent 👌
I.
Pricey with average beer but pleasant staff.
M. P.
Nice pub and beet but st nearly £6:00 a pint .phew
A. E.
Just called in for a quick drink while visiting York, very hospitable staff
J. T.
Comfortable bar and restaurant. Staff is nice! Food is also fine and I like the chicken pie most!
S. B.
Great pub, wonderful staff, lovely cask ale and food... However... After almost £50 on food and drink, refused a "doggy bag" for the chips! That has never happened to me before. What kind of "company policy" is that ?
B. H.
Lovely old pub with good food and friendly staff
J. S.
Nice little pub sit in or outside not bad price for the drinks
T. O.
During a trip to York for my birthday, we headed into this lively pub for a couple of drinks. The pricing wasn't too bad, it was nice and lively and the decor is very smart. Great pub.
D. C. (.
Lovely place. Nice food and friendly staff plus is one of the best pubs in York
M. P.
The pub was very busy but the bar staff were cheerful despite being rushed off their feet. The beer was well kept and the atmosphere was friendly and welcoming.
C. S.
Lovely traditional and unspoilt pub which serves a lovely drink and food the pies are wonderful
W. W.
Great little pub, good bar staff 👍
C. B.
OK for quick drink. This place did not feel homely, or comforting.
K. P.
The ambiance in the pub is really nice, portions are big, good selection of beers, although some were out of stock.
M. M.
One of favourite York watering holes, unique venue with great beers and service. Not to be confused with the Wetherspoons pub of the same name, this is far better.
G. R.
Nice pub, gets busy quickly so go 15/29 minutes before noon and you will get a table.
c. o.
Quirky old fashioned pub, serves food and good selection of drinks.
P. S.
Great atmosphere, genuine English pub, good food and ales.
J. W.
Busy pub..food looked good...would consider it for food when next in York 👍
J. C.
Beautiful old fashioned rustic pub, great atmosphere and lovely food.
J. T.
Lovely Nicholsons pub with great gin and fabulous staff
D. L.
Lovely pies, lovely ale and lovely service. All in a great setting and with great atmosphere
D.
Larger than it first appears. Great atmosphere and a good selection of beers.
A. H.
• Ate in at midday midweek, the pub became very busy, very quickly
• Ordered a steak and ale pie and, toad in hole, 0% Peroni and 0% Cherry Cider. Although the pie is award winning, we preferred the toad in the hold
• Tourists on a mini break in York with a young baby
• Tight space for the pram. Was not offered a highchair for the baby, we fed her in the pram. The table behind us did not have space to use the chairs that backed onto our table and pram
• Options to order from your table (via the app) or directly at the bar
l. m.
I am a coeliac and have difficulty finding places to eat where I feel confidant with the gluten free food on the menu. Keira the team leader was brilliant she answered my questions about the food and made me feel a very valued customer. Most places I go the staff aren't very helpful with my dietary needs. And the bonus was the gluten free lager.
J. R. W.
Nice homely pub and good food, good service and old atmosphere.
M. P.
I went with a friend there to have a catch up. Wr only had a coffee and then a glass of wine but when we were leaving the girl behind the bar wished us goodbye and see you later which was very nice. A cosy place for having a good catch up. ☺
L. H.
A lovely atmosphere, friendly staff and fantastic food. We would definitely visit again.
O. E.
Great service and very quick at making food, very tasty and cosy place.
R. W.

C. F.
Quaint comfortable place.Tasty meal.A favourite of mine👍😁❤
W. C.
Nice old pub with a good selection of beers
C. G.
The other half had been saying for a while that she wanted to go back to the Punch Bowl after a visit a few years ago. We went on Saturday and Sunday. I can honestly say the place is cosy, quaint and very nice overall. The food was very good on both occasions with large portions. Really can't fault the place
G. B.
Went for Christmas Day Dinner. They are very well organised and stayed in touch from booking to arrival. The food was great and plenty of it with no rush to eat even allowing us time between courses to chill. Some great touches a Christmas card with our names including our dog who came with us, a small gift bag with Christmas novelties as well as crackers. The staff were all very friendly and accommodating.
I. P.
Great food, beer and service.
L. T.
400 year old pub. Super cosy, lots of rooms/ nooks and crannys to relax in. Had pie for lunch (large selection of pies)... delicious and appear to be made on site too.

S. B.
Tasty food, nice atmosphere and beautiful place.
D. M.
This was my third visit to the punch bowl and always tend to be drawn here when I visit York. The food never disappoints and the staff are always friendly. As always I'm sure I'll visit it again and would recommend to anyone thinking about visiting!
D. C.
The VERY BEST pub pies I've tasted. Our must-call eating place when in York. Can get busy and occasionally a short wait for food - but hey . . . they serve great ales too
M. M. S. O. F. S.
Gorgeous little pub full of so much character
G. C.
Loved this place. Great example of an English pub. Great history info inside. Would recommend
R. H.
Superb! staff were amazing ! Whisky knowledge excellent sexton is the bomb, Definitely going back next time we're in York!
P. B.
It's a Wetherspoons. You should know what to expect...a good selection of drinks cheaper than most pubs and decent food with no airs and graces. Good vibe in this one.
M. S.
Great food and beer, everytime I go.
D. R.
Lovely old pub, friendly staff 🙂
M. P.
Nice pub, but it's not a Witherspoons pub which I'd searched G maps for! pint cider £4.85 (Jan 2022).
R. G.
Beautiful pub, great food and lovely atmosphere, very welcoming and all the staff are friendly and lovely 👏👏Yorks such a beautiful place ❤ 😊
k. C.
Very pleasant and friendly staff, would absolutely recommend a visit to the Punchbowl. Lovely olde worlde pub.
H. D. K.
Ok pub. Food was alright. Great selection of pies thought!!
T. K.
Enjoyed the pulled lamb topped with potatoes pie. Husband had the steak & ale which we both really enjoyed.
R. S.
What a great pub this is! Festive turkey pies were a real treat, deserts awesome as well. Inside pub area really nice with the big beams, nice atmosphere. One of the great things about this pub is that there is no giant television baring away - just gentle music in the background....what a joy!
Staff very friendly and helpful.
J. F.
Very busy pub, looked like good grub but had run out of fish so couldn't have my chippy tea on a Friday night.
D. B.
Great pub and choice of excellent beers and drinks. Food looked good.
B. D.
Nice food will go again
S. L.
Excellent service and excellent food. Visited twice before in the last fortnight and today for a third. It's just that good!
We'll definitely be returning next year on our holiday.

B. G.
Nice cosy pub with friendly staff.
D. D.
A very good and friendly pub with a great choice of Ales and wines. Would recommend a visit.
J. H.
Very expensive drinks compared to other pubs within walking distance.
Won't return to this pub considering there are 364 pubs to choose from in York.☹
S. B.
Great food good atmosphere,very busy.
A. H.
Popped in after our visit to Evie eye and house of trembling Madness. Nice and quite for a Monday afternoon. Large area for eating if you want a meal. Nice clean warm pub. Again staff were helpful and friendly. Big plus.
S. J.
Good selection of beer /food for sale in this old wood panelled pub.
L. B.
Place was OK quiz on in the other room the night we went.
M. m.
Friendly and helpful, great place to have a drink or a meal
K. S.
Very nice public house with good service and a nice meat sharing platter, would certainly come back again
M. L.
Great food and the staff are so friendly and helpful
A. F.
Excellent food if you're after a 'traditional' English meal. A selection of amazing pies with an array of fillings, including a few veggie and vegan options.
There's also a choice of standard pub meals and a few bits and bobs on special. Good choice of beer and a nice setting, would be ideal if you're looking for somewhere to take a visitor for lunch.
M. M.
Having shopped until we dropped, we fell on this delightful ale house. Being hungry, we ordered food, which was typical pub food, but was from kitchen to table in good time.
The pub interior had old French polished walls and lots of character. It wasn't rammed like other popular haunts, which made our visit very pleasant. The staff were also very friendly & helpful too.
I would definitely recommend a visit
V. F.
Pro's Helpful staff, really nice food, good value, really quirky traditional pub.
Cons, no socially distance between tables! Only wipes the top of tables, not the sides or the chairs.
Don't sanitise between cleaning/serving.
S. B.
Nice pub in the middle of York, various small rooms to sit at. Decent price and few cask ales on offer when I visited, doombar, black sheep, etc. Friendly staff and helpful
w.
Expensive but as expected. Seems like more and more bars keep upping there prices nowadays. Very large with plenty of seating. Can't comment on the food but probably wouldn't go for a meal here due to how busy it gets at peak times. No beer garden from what I could see but a smoking area out front. This is on a busy street and I wouldn't enjoy that. Nice bar and nice staff just not for me.
G. I.
Best fish & chips I ever ate! Atmosphere inside was very cosy, it was a good experience.
B. F.
Standard pub, with many rooms to explore. Plenty of seating.
l. W.
Great food nice atmosphere
S. H.
2nd time visiting and another great experience #spoonsalltheway
R. S. (.
Nice choice of drink, good atmosphere. Polite staff.
D.
Came down to York for a few days holiday. This was one of the many pubs we went to around York and was very nice. Good selection of beers at good prices, very friendly staff who suggested places for us to visit before we went home. The atmosphere of the pub was very nice. Would definitely go back.
G. C.
Lovely historical pub. Very cosy inside. Staff friendly and attentive. Can order through their app which is helpful
K. S.
Was fabulous pub, lovely atmosphere great food, will go back again xx
f.
Nice pub, good prompt service, centrally located withing the main shambles for a pit stop for food and drink
J. H.
Quick service, friendly staff and lovely food.
S. F.
Good pint unfortunately got collared with a drunk. Scouser
J. b.
Pleasant atmosphere, and warm. Stopped for a drink. Children happy with theirs, but beer too cold and I was disappointed that the drinks menu listed seedlip, only to be told it was menu printed for the whole chain and they didn't stick it here. Very disappointing.
J. P.
I entered at 5.30 on a Thursday, quite busy but ordered via the app and was very quickly served,..staff were friendly attentive and caring...
S. S.
THIS REVIEW IS HEAVILY related to the food - not the rest of the atmosphere or staff or drinks:
so - here's the deal: I could have gone anywhere for my Sunday roast, and I planned to go somewhere else - but this place was recommended by a local shop.
It was nice inside, packed withe people. Friendly staff. Interesting interior....BUT
The food wasn't great or particularly big portions - it was...ok. I wondered, frankly, if it had all be microwaved. The beef wasn't very nice and only one pudding.
eh.
Wasn't terribly expensive - but if you are only having one roast...this isn't where I would go again.
C.
Food plentiful and tasty. Felt welcomed by staff. Would recommend
S. B.
Quiet night, not very busy. Good pint of Doom Bar.
N. b. F. a. d.
Had a nice lunch here with my daughter and wife. Polite service and great food. They were really busy and it was explained upon ordering there would be a 30 min wait, which I think is honest and fair. Also told what items were not available. I accepted wait, but food came in 20 minutes so a nice surprise. Excellent surroundings, this is what you come to places like York for. Will visit again as we come to visit my daughter at university every few weeks. Thanks.
V. P.
Came to york for a day out to celebrate my partners birthday.
Chose punch bowl as it was situated smack in the centre.
Loved the interior and exterior, Absolutely beautiful.
Staff were fine, very helpful.
The only disappointment was the food, which obviously is a big factor.
The food arrived quickly, i ordered the steak rare....it arrived black...very over done.
The triple cooked chips tasted no different to oven chips that had been reheated.
Partner had hunters chicken that was very soggy.
There was no staff around to discuss this with so left eager to get on with our day.
Was very disappointed as it was looking so good.
I hope it was just an off say, but probably wont be back.
H. H.
Great food and a lovely waiter
T. R.
Just bobbed in for a pint.
Service a tad slow at the bar.
Good cider on tap.
Food looked nice.

I've been to The Punch Bowl in the past but not for a long time. Today; I went with a friend for a Sunday lunch. I had the belly pork and my friend had the lamb shank. Both of us thought the food was very good. My pork was succulent and properly-cooked (often belly pork can be very fatty and chewy if not cooked correctly. Thankfully, the cooking of the pork I had was excellent).
There was also a good amount of veg and potatoes to accompany the meals so we both thought it was quite good value for money. I've been to other places that don't offer anywhere near the same quality for the price.
I should also note that the service we received was excellent. The person who served us made us feel welcome and had a good sense of humour. Can't fault the service really as our food came quite quickly, too.
I can definitely recommend eating at The Punch Bowl.
M. K.
Good location, average prices, average food, if you're in the area then fine but not a destination pub
A. Y.
Food was delicious and really good value. Pub itself very small and traditional and a little quirky here n there. Staff looked after us well.
A. L.
Great pub and quality beers
A. D. (.
Probably the best Sunday roast I've ever eaten, outside of my own home cooking of course 😉
Very reasonable sized portions and food was cooked proper and tasty. Good portion for the kids too which is rare in most places.
Toby Cavery, you've got nothing on these guys!
S. D.
I make sure to visit this pub whenever I'm in York. Really cosy, friendly staff, good service and good food. Would certainly recommend a visit.
B. D.
Lovely place to visit as always, the prices were extremely expensive, I guess cashing in on the tourists which is a real shame it made us move to another venue for a meal
G. H.
The food we had was very nice. Service was a little slow though. The barman seemed a little preoccupied but we enjoyed our lunch
S. L.
We saw from street menu that they had a very varied pie menu and decided to give it a try.
Inside the pub is very old and quaint with the main bar area and then a couple of snugs. Despite it being a cold wet Wednesday night the pub was quite busy with both locals and tourists eating and drinking in there, it created a friendly buzz. We found a table in the back bar and we ordered a pulled lamb pie and a ribeye in red wine sauce pie. The food didn't take long to come and it was piping hot and well-presented, the lamb pie was very nice but the ribeye pie was out of this world.
Despite how busy the pub had been all evening the two young members of staff, Jess and Ryan were very attentive and provided excellent service throughout the evening.
We will definately be returning to the punch bowl for the fabulous food and excellent service.
S. M.
Traditional pub, friendly staff. Good for a drink, didn't try the food.
A. B.
Service was not the best for a city like York with abrupt service and did not feel appreciated, the breakfast menu was over priced for the quality, but it was a nice atmosphere in the pub with a lovely heritage. Traditional wooden beams with a nice snug but distinct lack of open fire meant it felt slightly cold. Not sure I would revisit this pub again, and probably wouldn't recommend it either.
J.
Nice friendly pub. Good beer. Never eaten there so can't recommend but always busy with people eating and the food looks nice. Very popular pub and get very busy.
J. N.
Lovely pub with a great sense of atmosphere and character. A must visit pub on a York trip!
N. I.
Went in search of Wetherspoons and found this place instead. Very cosy pub where it can get quite crowded when it's busy, but if you get a seat its definitely a good spot. Service at bar was quick enough and drink variety was good. Prices were a bit steep and definitely more than the Spoon's prices I was looking for, but overall a nice pub.
S. M.
Really liked the pub despite hardly having any ales on, on Friday evening. It's a really old pub which is supposedly haunted if you're into that thing. We had a few drinks in there, couple of IPA's etc, there was a list of about 9 of which the first 3 I asked for weren't available, nevertheless the ones I had were nice!! Old interior with flickery lighting to add to the atmosphere. There's a ghost walk from outside at 7.30pm.
N. J.
Really nice traditional pub! Great prices and the food looks great we didn't eat here but the food was reasonably priced.
Only reason is only 3 stars is the mens toilets were flooded and stank. Again if I was to visit again and these had been fixed the review will be changed
C. R.
Really lovely old pub in the middle of York. Staff have always been friendly when ordering or just having a general chat. Food looks really nice but haven't had a chance to try any yet. It's worth a pop in the try the drinks and see the quirky old style of building.
A. P.
We had a very nice lunch at The Punch Bowl, lovely staff, so yes would certainly recommend 👍
M. C.
Over priced compared to other pubs in the area
J.
Lovely pub with history, nice beer, friendly staff and great food
S. W. (. W. T.
Love this pub. Great location, although this does bump the price up slightly, nice staff and good quality Guinness. As with most of the pubs in York centre, it has its resident ghosts as well
A. D.
We've had a meal there yesterday. It wasn't busy, the service was good, friendly and really quick. We had two beef and stilton pies and they were tasty. Chips and gravy were lovely.
J. S.
Good food nice selection of drinks also staff pleasant and welcoming
M. D.
Fantastic food, swift service and great atmosphere, would definately recommend.
K. G.
Fantastic!
The staff we're loving and the food was good.

D. H.
A very atmospheric, quaint and cosy pub in the centre of York. With cheap drinks and friendly staff.
b. b.
Great food in a lovely pub, staff were very friendly
J. F.
Another amazing place food looked so good & good selection of drinks & good prices
G. P.
Nice atmosphere & lovely meal. Only let down was the plumbing in the ladies.
T. E.
Nice old pub right in the middle of York. Conveniently located on Stonegate, not far from Betty's teashop. Decent selection of ales. Some nice cosy rooms at the rear. Very good food as always in a Nicholson's pub. Apparently haunted by several ghosts. Well worth a visit.
D. T.
Good staff , good food , Xmas decorations up ! Great experience! Keep up the good work!
J.
Old pub with quite a bit of room inside.
Standard pub food and a selection of beers.
S. M.
Very busy and slow service but it was Christmas time. We've been in several times before and had a lovely time! Staff made sure we were ok and they serve a good selection of beers, ales and spirits.
V. H.
My first visit to this lovely historic pub. The three small rooms with their oak beams, low ceilings and wood panelled walls look hardly changed since the 17th century. I had lunch in the snug. Cosy and friendly atmosphere and despite it being very busy the service was quick. Good choice of cask ales and artisan gins. They serve traditional pub meals, Sunday roasts, pies are a speciality with some vegetarian options. I tried the venison, rabbit and sloe gin pudding with mash and seasonal veg, really glad I did, delicious flavour, tender meat and generous helpings. I was fascinated by the stories of the three resident ghosts! An enjoyable lunch and I would certainly come again when I return to York.
P. L.
Food is fine and quite well priced, but don't expect fine dining. Staff are good considering how busy it can be. Try and get a table in the snug, cosiest place to be.
G. S.
Service good, food ordinary pub food nothing special
S. B.
Our favourite place to go for drinks and/or food. Lovely atmosphere and lovely friendly staff.
E. K.
Apparently it was founded by the Nicholson company? Mr. Nicholson was good at cricket. They had fairy lights when we went. There's a good amount of space within. I didn't see a punch bowl during my visit. They have hells lager. They have some nifty leather chairs with padded leather backs. They have a menu entirely of pies, most of which sound fine, some of which sound scrumptious.
C. H.
A fabulous cosy oldie worldie pub with great service! A great atmosphere when visiting York. We came last year for the snooker and managed to squeeze through the door. You really feel the 17th century vibe in this amazing city.
Not to be missed! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Not our first time at The Punch Bowl, lovely old pub in the shambles , York .
Lunch time I had parsnip and apple soup , delicious. ..hubby had the fish finger sandwich and chips, he loved that .The following night I had steak and salad , hubby had the fish combo , really enjoyed it , will be back again.
C. D.
We loved this historic pub. Great food, friendly staff. Lots of comfy places to sit and plenty of room. Highly recommended.

Fantastic duck leg pie
J. M.
Great proper pub, try the fish pie ...
a. h.
The pub is really quirky and fun, however one of our meals was well below standard. The staff were friendly and tried to fix the issue but in the end we just gave up
D. C.
Pub was good to be in for the decor. Slow service at bar. Food OK but I thought we had been given child's portions by mistake. Four adults one reasonable sized meal out of four.
M. W.
Great pub. Warm, friendly atmosphere. Great selection of drinks and food. Can recommend the sherbert gin a d the chicken and mushroom pie.
J. C.
Lovely traditional cosy pub with little private corners to enjoy good food a quite drink.
Situated in the centre of York with an abundance of shopping choices within the city walls.
A. T.
Very nice place to people watch
S. P.
Fantastic - very accommodating especially around our 1 year old baby - another table had two very tired and grumpy little girls; crayons were produced by the staff along with a huge sheet of paper and before they knew it they were engaged with Derek in producing masterpieces to order... ;0)
The food was fantastic and Derek served it with a finesse and overall style that bordered on performance art!
B. B. A.
Nice and friendly pub very accommodating the only unfortunate thing was the ladies toilets where somebody had not flushed and also filled up the toilet with toilet paper
L. C.
Cosy pub. We were lucky enough to grab a table on our shopping trip. Food was v tasty and burgers were some of the best we'd had. Great for a cheeky pint.
m. k.
Good old fashioned historical pub. Ties in with the Guy Fawked plot.and has good food and ales.
R. T.
Lovely 'Olde Worlde' traditional pub.
Only had a quick pint in here recently, but, credit where credit is due...a truly lovely pub.
Next time I'm in York I intend to stop my wife from having a Costa Coffee snack and have a sit down pint in the Punch Bowl with a lovely meat pie.
Can't wait.
S. B.
Sitting between York Minster and the Shambles Market this pub is always busy, serving good quality food and a selection fine beers. Always a good atmosphere, with welcoming helpful staff.

Very pleasant staff, lovely food. Four stars because the ladies toilets need attention, one out of use, one with broken seat, the last one was okay though.
M. W.

Great place full of history but let down by the staff. Service was slow which they did apologise for, and we ordered food. Limited menu. Food that came wasn't great either. Sad times.
S. P.
Great staff. Great food. Love the historic pub.
S. B.
Proper old fashioned pub. Hate pub chains they are so boring!
Y. R.
First time in this pub I think. Olde worldy sort of vibe, no sports or entertainment, several rooms to sit in. Not sure if you can get food as only dived in for one as part of a crawl.
R. W.
