Reviews of Mama Fay's
Z.
Visited on a Saturday evening, but booked that day as walked past a few times and always people in. Nicely decorated vibrant place, friendly staff and excellent food. We sat in the rear of the restaurant, would of preferred the front but was full so understandable. We had the curried goat, with rice and peas and the jerk chicken with sweet potato fries. Both were really tasty and good size portions. Good range of drinks available at reasonable prices. We had cider and lager, but wine is also available. Would definitely visit again as there's lots more we want to try from the menu. Would recommend a visit.

Brilliant place for an evening meal. A group of 6 of us had a fab meal here. The food was delicious and it's so nice to try some different cuisines other than the usual options. I shared a platter with my husband, followed by a delicious pudding. Loved the drinks options too! The staff were lovely, friendly and helpful, and even the chef came out and had a little chat with us. A fantastic meal and for me a fabulous first Caribbean restaurant/food experience, yum!

with Jamaican cuisine finding its way into more and more cities I find myself drawn into trying different ones when I visit places. Mama Fays did not disappoint. small but with a nice atmosphere. friendly staff and the cook comes out to say hi, nice cocktails. I usually go for the currie mutton or jerk chicken but there was a mixed grill on the menu so I went for that. if I'm honest I would have preferred the jerk chicken or mutton curry as the mixed grill meat was tough but very flavourful. I'm not saying there was anything wrong its just my preference. that said I cant wait to get back there to try some more dishes. my partner had Leafy Salad with Avocado and Mango with chicken and it was really nice. worth a visit guys

Amazing food, great flavours, tender meat, great atmosphere, superb quick service, very helpfull staff. Chef Phil - found some time to meet the customer with a smile and passion. Well done team Mama Fay’s. Strongly recommend. ♥️♥️♥️

Authentic Caribbean favourites served with a smile - so glad I dropped in! I chose sweetcorn fritters, followed by curried goat, finished off with mango cheesecake. Everything was fresh and quite delicious. Good selection of drinks too. Highly recommended.

This is genuinely some of THE best food I have ever had. I had the curried chicken with rice and peas, a corn fritters and fried dumplings and all of it was fantastic. The chicken was SO tender and the curry was spiced perfectly. The venue is also very pretty, lovely energy.
All the staff are incredibly friendly, some of the nicest people I’ve ever met. Highly highly recommend

Amazing little restaurant in town, served a great variety of food and drinks with tasteful décor inside. Plenty of seating although perhaps could do with accommodating more than one large group of people. They take table bookings if you prefer that to walk ins, and I was able to get a large cocktail for £4.50 which was a great price. The workers were extremely friendly and attentive. With a variety of starters I was able to have a lighter meal whilst my friends were just as accommodated for a larger meal. Recommend for a unique meal.

We had been around town looking for somewhere to stop for dinner and this is the place we decided on. We were not disappointed. Incredibly tasty food done the right way. The produce used was high quality and choice of ingredients carefully selected. Waiting staff were friendly and serving time was just right. We had a lovely meal and would absolutely return when in the area. We couldn't understand why it wasn't busier.

Small and cosy place. Food was delicious and reasonably priced. Staff was super friendly and helpful too. Waiting time was also almost nothing even though it was a weekend and the restaurant seemed full. It was our friends birthday, we phoned up a couple of hours before the party to ask if we could bring our own cake. Not only we got a green light for that, they also set it all up for us and sang happy birthday to our friend. She loved it, thank you:)

Wow, was excited to try Mama Fay's and it more than lived up to reviews. The food is not fancy but packed with flavour. I had a 4 bean chilli and genuinely don't know what magic was done to make it taste so good - and that's even before the dumplings and lime slaw which were amazing. Finished off with a Jamaican coffee (spiced and made with condensed milk). So full I may never eat again, but very happy!
Very friendly service and great value too, only good things to say here, will be back.
C. 1.
Food was authentic Caribbean. Plantain was great ,rice and peas was great. The dumplings a little hard.
The wait time was long for the food but worth it.
Prices are quite expensive but I understand as West Indian ingredients are quite expensive.
If the lunch time prices was also for sitting in then it would be even better

Colourful gem of a place to eat where we stopped for lunch while on holiday. I had jerk chicken and my husband had jerk pork. Could have been a bit hotter spice wise but otherwise fresh and very flavorful. Followed with the sweet potato pie for dessert which was lovely - not too sweet. Portions were a sensible size. Service was warm and welcoming. Excellent adherence to hygiene practices for COVID. Wish there were more places like it to eat at in Aberystwyth.
S. E.
Whilst not a place to go to if you're in a hurry, the food had a really nice flavour (we had three different main courses in our party) and was beautifully presented. It just took a lot longer than I expected, but I'd not expressed that to the staff so they didn't know - we just sat back, chatted and relaxed which went well.
L. C.
Food is incredible, a ton of options in food which made it very accessible for those dining with intolerance or requirement. The Jerk chicken was perfect and so was the cocktail that they made. Its a place I have returned to a few time

Was visiting the city as a last minute stopover and came across this gem of a restaurant. Open slightly later than others and boy was it worth it.
The food was absolutely amazing. Tasty, well presented, visually appealing and more importantly the Chicken Breast with Avocado salad was impeccable. The home made ice cream was extremely tasty also.
The home made vegan brewed beer again extremely well made and popular.
Friendly staff and compliments to the chef of course 😊👌

Every time I come here, it is the best. Without a doubt, tastiest food in Aberystwyth and I'd highly recommend to everybody. Great food, great service, both as eat in and take away.
G. C.
Starter and Main course were 10 out of 10! Was a bit disappointed with the desserts as we thought the standard would be the same. The desserts looked great but tasted a bit bland.. Would still go again though, maybe next time will be better!
l. j.
This place is just superb. It has variety, and caters for our children that will not stray past burgers. Having said that, my son's chicken goujons were just heaven - it's nice to see the same love and care in every dish.
I would quite happily eat there again, also watch out for their stall at the Aberystwyth farmers market.
I only took a few photos as the food got demolished straight away! The ones I did photograph were the goat curry (shared the rice&peas with my husband's pumpkin rice), sweet potato pie and pecan and rum brownie.
N. H.
If you like the Carribean flavours then "BOOM" job done. Beers and cocktails indicative of the region along with a warm welcome. Interior is kind of workaday Carribean but clean and tidy. The food though is why you are there and it was worth the visit.
I tried the spicy prawns, good but quite salty, well cooked with not too much heat. The main course though was a triumph, Goat Curry. Can be tricky to tell if you have perfectly cooked goat or lamb in this case I truly didn't care, the flavours were amazing, accompanied by rice and peas (actually black beans but that is correct) and the most delicious dumplings.
Finished with a local rum&raisin ice cream that had more alcohol in it than the mojitos! Go if you get the chance.

Decided to go for dinner at Mama Fay's after having read various reviews. No dissapointments there: in a colourful place it's caribean spiced food. As a starter I had the marinaded chicken (tip: add a littlr bit of bread for the rest of the juice to eat). Nice. The main was slightly carribean hot spiced sliced goat with Rice, hot spiced the way I like it. Not top big, but very tastefull. Friendly service although the plates of the starter were all the time on the table until dessert).
Z. C. (.
It was our first time eating at Mama Fay's this evening. We ordered The curried goat it was full of flavour and meat very tender. We also ordered rice and peas and chips as sides and both were very nice. Compliments to the Chef and staff at Mama Fay's. I'm sure we will be back to try other dishes with you
A. M.
Visited Mama Fay's for the first time this evening for takeaway food.
1st of all I want to say the paintings of Koffee, Vbyz Kartel etc.. on the wall are amazing. They are available to purchase also.
Now for the meal itself and as a person of Jamaican heritage. The food was spot on, I had a Jerk Sharing Platter with Curry Goat. I don't have a single bad thing to say, when visit this part of the world again.
B. W.
This was a little gem of a place. Staff were friendly attentive but not pushy. We had plenty of time to look at the menu and the food was wonderful. It was very nice when the chef came out to check that you were happy with your food. I would recommend visiting Aberystwyth to five this restaurant a try.....well worth it.
E. J.
only disappointment was not meeting Mama Fay ....does she exist?
had jerk buffalo wings and spiced hummus for starters...the jerk was mild and had a fruity overtone.
washed down with mojito and a bottle of cabernet sauvignon....both v good.
mains of curried goat was good but more rice required please.
Attentive staff top which rounded off a great night out
M. M. (.
Amazing food friendly, helpful staff.
Everyone should try this place. They will cater for people who cannot eat hit food. Cannot praise it enough.
P. J.
We visited Mama Fay's on our first night away in Aberystwyth over the Platinum Jubilee holiday.
The shop is bright, colourful and full of life with great music being played. We were greeted by two lovely waitresses who showed us to our table. The entire process was table service, so we could be completely laidback.
The service was speedy and the food was absolutely amazing. I would recommend the Halloumi Sticks, Jerk Sharer Platter & Sweet Potato Tart.
All of this, plus drinks came to about £26.50 each. For a three course meal and a drink, I'd say that is great value for money! If we ever find ourselves in Aber again, we will be popping in to Mama Fay's!
a. g.
An excellent find by my partner. Great service, friendly staff and excellent food. The goat curry is incredible.
K. J.
Great food. Flavours were amazing. Service a little slow but restaurant was busy.
O. H.
The food here is absolutely amazing! I had the Curried Goat with some of the sides and loved it very much! Why 3 stars though? Well the service is very slow. we ordered our drinks and they sat on the bar on a tray for 10 minutes before being brought to our table. Then a further 30 minutes until our food arrived... Then when trying to wave the staff for the bill, no one would take notice so we had to go to the bar and pay. More attentive staff would've made this a 5 star.
B.
Great food and friendly staff in a well ventilated restaurant, looking forward to a return visit already
P. T.
Very nice never had Jamaican food before I had the sea Bass & it was lovely & reasonably priced as well .🇯🇲
G. L.
I love this little restaurant food is gorgeous a must try if you in Aber, I've been 3 times in the last 2 months. Fair prices and good service.
K. G.
Delicious food, great staff. Really friendly and passionate about food. All the food cooked from scratch (takes a little while because it is not fast food!)
A. C.
Brilliant place. Great food, great value for money. Friendly waitress and ace reggae playing in the background. Highly recommended.
s. s.
Excellent, authentic Caribbean food. Great selection on the menu meant that even my fussy kids were happy.
B. B. (.
Very good food, great atmosphere, fantastic service.
S. L.
Great staff, lovely atmosphere and the best curried goat. Can't wait to visit again.
B. N.
Excellent curry, and the service is relaxed but attentive. Prices are good too and everything is served in excellent proportions.
C. L.
Great service, good food at a reasonable price. For me was lacking a bit more punch with the jerk spice but I understand that they are catering for the majority. Would recommend.
S. V.
Nice atmosphere, good food.
D. H.
Stopped in on a high recommendation from a friend.
Was not disappointed at all. The jerk chicken burger was fantastic. The chips were crispy and slightly seasoned. And the mac and cheese was great. And the cocktail I had was perfect blend of flavour and alcohol.
The staff were friendly. Talkative and helpful.
Do your tastebuds a favour and stop at Mama Fays
D. B.
Amazing Jamacian food, really good selection and specials.
Great cocktails.
R. P.
My first experience of Carribbean food and I'll definitely be back 😋😁
E. E.
A great surprise. Good taste n quality n good portion. 👍
C. W.
Been here a few times now and it is the best spot in Aberystwyth in my opinion. The veggie options are great and it's always warm and friendly with good music. All the food is incredibly tasty with good portion sizes.
I even came here once on a Sunday afternoon in the winter quite late with friends after a heavy night out in serious need of sustenance and they were open and served us fantastic food. Life savers!
S. L.
Mama Fay's serves excellent, flavorsome food at very decent prices. Would recommend getting a platter to share so you can try a bit of everything; jerk was delicious, curried goat was delicious, corn fritters were delicious... you get where I'm going with this There are a couple of tables for outdoor dining too on the quiet street, making for an overall great experience. Will definitely return.
T. J.
I have a delivery from Mama Fay's every now and again. It is always a treat. The food looks and tastes like it's made with care. Everything is homemade, including the delicious chips. I love the festival. I have some with my meal but keep a couple warm in the oven to have with a spoonful of warm nutella or honey for dessert. I know they're supposed to be a savoury side, but eaten with something sweet, they remind me a little of churros.
P. H.
I've eaten a lot of curried goat over the last 30-40 years. Some home-made and some in a restaurant or takeaway. The curried goat at Mama Fays is in my top 3 of all time. It's so tasty and the spices are just the right amount to give a little heat but not so much to block out the flavours. Matched up with rice and peas and its a superb dish.
I also had the buffalo wings starter and they were also top notch.
Some say you should always have fish n chips at the seaside. This is very true but, if you're in Aber, spare a little room for a trip to Mama Fays. You won't be disappointed.
S. H.
Great place and great food try the goat curry it's a must

Wanted to try Mama Fays after reading good reviews. It was our first meal out in Aberystwyth so bit nervous about covid restrictions etc. We booked an early sitting a day ahead so it wouldnt be too crowded. On arrival hand sanitiser available and all staff wearing masks. Shown to front window table which was great as plenty of space around. We chose starters of prawns and corn fritters, followed by carribean platter with sides so we could sample lots of different tastes, recommend the mac and cheese too. All food came freshly cooked, hot and tasty, washed down with mojito and beer. Staff were very friendly and helpfull and throughout the meal we felt safe as no crowds, even take away customers queued outside. We ate so much had to take our dessert home, yummy brownie and mango cheescake delicious! Altogether a lovely experience and would definately return if visiting again.
M. E.
A cafe-esque little place that promised a bit more than it delivered. I had the curried chicken and it was a bit lacking in flavour and the chicken was a bit overcooked. Nice environment and friendly service.
C. C.
Really lovely meal here the staff were great and very well informed about the menu happy to answer questions. The food itself was top notch from the lovely corn fritters, great rice and peas and the awesome goat curry (you need to try it) would definitely recommend this place
A. S.
The food is great, good prices and service, however, I would strongly suggest that if you are ordering vegan food, to put emphasis on that when ordering as we were brought a dairy mac and cheese when we ordered the vegan one. They quickly fixed the mistake, but make sure to check with your waiter when they serve you!
J. G.
The food was incredible and the staff were wonderful, a proper homely feeling and we will be back very soon. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a fantastic quality meal!
A. P.
Food was fairly authentic, lacked spice, but the taste would cater for most of the local area. Unfortunately it took well over an hour for our food to come out and it wasn't that busy. We did see a lot of take away orders going out in this time, so maybe the customers that are dining in need some more priority. Service was very slow, one waitress was trying to serve everyone : another waiter slow, just wiping down tables. We asked for extra sauce at the start of the meal, and it came when we were nearly finished.
Recommend the Jerk Chicken and Jerk Wings. May need to ask for them extra spicy if you want them closer to how they should be.
A.
Great little find, don't be deceived by the outside, as the food is great! Thoroughly recommended, we particularly enjoyed the Jerk sharing platter with corn fritters and rice and peas! Sadly too full for dessert, although they sounded just as delicious.
R. R.
Me and my partner came in this evening and were extremely impressed. The food was beautiful , curried goat with rice and peas and fried dumplings on the side because we are little piggies 😂 even the salad garnish was so tasty . Service was lovely and the staff were friendly . Definitely coming again next time we are up. I'm sure your mum is very proud 👍

Delicious dinner last night at Mama Fay’s. Warm, friendly service and freshly made, delicious food.
Excellent jerk chicken, special tamarind & mango chicken and a great goat curry - very tender meat.
Lovely place and highly recommended.

Took my family this evening and it was getting really busy ,6pm onwards. The poor waitress was really busy but provided great service .Food was fantastic .I personally had the curried goat and requested it quite hot and really it was fantastic with my pumpkin rice.Drinks are great ,with great selection.
I recommend Mama Fay's big time!
Please go if you get chance .

Personally I don’t rate this restaurant. My family are native to the Caribbean islands and I have long loved the food and culture however I personally find them over priced and poor quality from what I expect from native Caribbean restaurants I have been to city restaurants which are ALOT faster in service and better in food taste especially when the prices are quite high for some of the dishes. I found that with the festivals they were very pale and not dried long enough (again preference) and being £3 for 4 is extortionate in comparison to other places. I will say that the quality is ok but things like the festivals are the small things that for me, make or break a dish hence a fair 3* review. I personally won’t visit again, but please remember this is my opinion only, it’s not to say you may not like it however I wasn’t a great fan at this time.
i.
Supper for two 6pm. Welcoming happy staff. For a dedicated Caribbean restaurant , music was disappointing....tinny and irritating at first but like trains soon hardly noticed, probably because starters were so good. Sizzling prawns in their shells - messy but so worth it. Corn fritters warming and tasty. Mains - jerk chicken great on an amazing bed of salad . Goat curry I very reluctantly have to describe as a bland disappointment. Goat tender and tough and didn't really have any taste. Sauce was brown and peppery. Didn't recognise any particular spice. Maybe that was intended - never had Caribbean curry. Rice was gorgeous perfectly tender and boiling hot but cooked without salt and there was none on the tables. Good sized portions of everything and lovely presentation. Mango sorbet delicious . So two drinks, 2 starters 2 mains 2 desserts £60.00 with tip. Definitely go if you're in or near Aberystwyth.
J. C.
A great find in Aberystwyth. The food was fresh and very tasty. The staff were very welcoming and managed to accommodate a party of 10 without any prior notice. The waitress we had did a brilliant job! We'll definitely be returning when we are next in the area.
A. S.
What a little gem!!! Me and my family first visited for lunch and was totally blown away. Returned days later for dinner, Amazing!!! (So good we visted a further 3 times) Incredible food, incredible flavours and lovely staff. Great value honest food!
AWESOME!!!
K. D.
Absolutely stunning food! Restaurant was full
As expected but I got takeaway and they let me sit in their outside seats. Food was beautiful, well
Spiced and priced! Service was fab! Would definitely go back!
D. D.
We had a lovely evening. The food was excellent. Staff were friendly. It was our friends 30th wedding anniversary, they helpt make it so special. Definitely recommend this restaurant. Thank you.
F. S.
Delicious food, well presented and excellent service
G. J.
This is a hidden gem! The staff make you feel welcome and are extremely friendly and helpful! The food is great. Would definately visit again when I am next in town 🙂
J. L.
Have found my new favourite place to eat. Had the best roast dinner...something with a bit of flavour and a bit of spice.
S. M.
My favourite Caribbean by far. Don't live in Aberystwyth, but always eat here when I do visit. My birthday today and chose this as my birthday meal. Do I need to say anymore 😄
L. L.
Food superb. Prawn starters very tasty. . Goat curry so tender and really tasty. JERK CHICKEN DELICIOUS. I finished off with mango cheesecake. This sweet was perfect. The reason that I have not given 5 stars is that they were short staffed so service was slower than ideal although very pleasant.
A. W.
Tonight was our first experience of this outstanding restaurant .
We had a fantastic time, the food was incredibly mouth watering wne the atmosphere was wonderful.
Credits to the chef and the front of house staff we sure will be visiting again.
I. F.
A fabulous meal at Mama Fay's. Lovely starters wings and fritters. Goat curry after that. Tender and mouth watering. Service may be a bit slow for some but we were in no rush and happy to enjoy the atmosphere while we waited.
D.
We came to stay in Aberystwyth for the weekend and Mama Fay's was so good that we had it both nights. I recommend the corn fritters (vg), the Callaloo burrito (vg), and the dumplings with jerk sauce/scotch bonnet sauce (My wife insits the crispy bolt chicken with lime slaw, and rice and peas is best).
I. J.
Me and the wife went for Sunday dinner today 12/12/21 it was amazing best one I've had in Aberystwyth. Definitely recommend this place
D. D. M.
Ate here a few weeks ago on a recommendation. To be honest it was okay. Not the best place ever to be discovered but also not the worst. We ate on a Saturday evening and the place was almost empty. One couple complained about the food not being genuine to which the chef took offence to! Our food was fine but not great. The interior is very basic to say the least.
D. C.
Had a great experience here, highly recommend! Food is great
B. B.
Fabulous Caribbean food in Aberystwyth; small restaurant serving really special food in an unexpected place. Perhaps a little understaffed on a busy Saturday evening but the food made up for it. Particular highlights are the corn fritters and sweet potato fries.
K. G.
Try the place if your have not already its Absolutely brilliant, all the food is fantastic staff ate always lovely. Curry's are amazing and the jerk chicken falls off the bone with easy (someone knows how to cook)
;)

Myself and 3 friends went on tuesday and we all agreed it was amazing. Pork bites were superb, Goat curry amazing, dumplings mmmmm. Cannot reccomend it enough. Definitely 5 stars

J. P.
Wow such great food, was a little dubious from first impressions but it's definitely worth a try....will be going again that's for sure 😊

Great food, great value

Wow! Such a special place. Every mouthful of food and drink was totally delicious. And felt so at home. A really lovely vibe and place to have a beautiful and relaxed meal. If I come back to Aberystwyth, I’ll come back here.
P. L.
The food is excelent, salad dressing the best I've had.Sadly front of house terrible, several mistakes on the bill charged £12 for 2 shandies. Over charged for the festival's a corn dumpling. Don't bother asking what's in the dressing I was told Caesar salad it isn't.
J. B.
Very tasty burger and excellent hand cut chips. Espresso satisfactory, but not overly with bite. Will definitely eat here again.....and so should you!
E. A.
Jerk chicken was tasty and cooked beautifully, fell off the bone! Yum!
P. B.
Delicious Carribean food. We loved the 'Taste of Jamaica platter'. The jerk chicken was delicious as were the fried dumplings. Ackee & Saltfish was delicious too. Highly recommended
M.
The food was gorgeous, the waitress was fantastic! Will definitely be back next time we're in Aberystwyth! Thank you for a wonderful meal!
S. J.
This place is incredible. It's often really quiet and I don't know why. The food is really tasty. Everything is reasonably priced and the service is good. It's well worth trying if you haven't already. Give it a go.
A. S.
Great food loads of it and a great range of beers.
Enjoyed it so much we booked again for the following night
B. D.
Nice food but the curries etc. come in fairly small servings. I have had real problems in the past with delivery through deliveroo but appreciate that this isn't always the restaurants fault
F. Y.
My favourite takeaway in Aberystwyth, just tried the tamarind mango chicken from the valentine's menu, absolutely delicious! Thank you Mama Fay's
H. M.
Every African and their decendant and friends must visit this place. Wether you like cocktails or Mocktails they have their own flavours. The meals are full of real meat... Flesh on the bone! It is also presented in a unique way. I like the small tot-sized buckets in which the dip is served.
The dancehall and reggae music completes the background.
A. L.
Very good food,so unexpectedly in Wales. The venue is small and has some nice Caribbean music on. Good value for money.
Probably make reservations during the weekend
L. M.
Gorgeous food - a great find while looking around Aberystwyth. The food is full of flavour, beautifully cooked and service was fantastic. Thank you Mama Fay's.
