Reviews of The Cochin Indian Restaurant
N.
We had such a lovely meal tonight 09/08/21. The waiter, we didn't catch his name, but he was so lovely and polite and really helpful and attentive. Perfect service, great food, very reasonably priced, we would go again! Don't be put off by the poor decor and outer appearance and go inside for some great food!!

Well where do I start with my review of The Cochin Restaurant? Firstly having never dined there before we were not sure what to expect. We had only read reviews on TripAdvisor and Google which had been very complemently about the food and service so we wanted to give it a try. We had a table booked for 2 at 8.30, and we were met at the door and shown to our table by the window by a very pleasant waiter. He prompty brought over our menus, and we began to peruse through. The menu had a extensive selection of fish dishes which pleased me as I love fish, so I felt spoilt for choice as my expectations grew. The waiter was very attentive and informal and very knowledgeable about the dishes on their menu, and was happy to answer any questions we had. I finally settled on the fishermans soup for starter. Sadly this was a big let down! Very watery, no depth of flavour and next to no fish in an actual fish soup!!! My friend ordered the minty chilli prawns, the sauce which coated the prawns was tasty and zingy and the prawns cooked nicely however sadly the portion size and presentation was disappointing. Both starters seemed to arrive very quickly after ordering, which was a surprise. It seemed to me they had just been warmed through and thrown onto a plate.
For my main course I ordered the mixed seafood curry which consisted of King fish, squid, prawns and mussels cooked in authentic Kerala special spice mixed sauce. The fish was cooked perfectly and the earthy Kerala special spice mixed sauce was the perfect accompaniment to the fish. Sadly the squid was over cooked and rubbery which was the only negative aspect to the dish. My friend odered the kuttanadan duck roast which consisted of slices of duck cooked in thick roast gravy sauce. The sauce had a lovely velvety rich flavour to it however the duck itself was a big let down as sadly it was tough and chewy. All in all some postives but also some negatives. If this was a school report it would probably read, 'tries hard but can do better'!!!

After struggling to find good indian food for ages, I finally found The Cochin on deliveroo! Best lamb curry! ❤️ Will deffo try more things

Expected a spicy fish curry instead we got a sweet one. The taste was a big let down.

Recently ordered crab curry served with lemon rice. Taste heavenly! So happy we don't have to be always in London to get a high quality of food!

Delicious South Indian cuisine in Bedford. My favourite so far. Each dish tastes differently & delicious. Will coming back again. Highly recommended!

Don't be put off by the unassuming exterior as inside is a culinary gem with delicious flavours of Kerala.
My starter was Chicken Ulatarthiyathu - lovely juicy cubes of chicken cooked in turmeric water, then stir fried with pepper powder, curry leaves and coconut slivers. The chicken was lovely and tender, there was a good amount of heat and there was the lovely taste of coconut highlighting the dish.
For my main I had the Lamb & Spinach Curry. The lamb was lovely and tender - and plenty of it - in a thick complex masala sauce with a lovely hint of cashews.
The Okra masala was the best I've ever tasted and the okra still had a crunch to it. The tamarind rice was lovely and a nice change and the paratha was absolutely delicious.
The wines were a very reasonable price - our Chilean Merlot was only £14.95 - and we were served water without having to ask.
The service was excellent, the cooking was fantastic and with the recent events in Kerala you should go and show support for such a different part of India - and I managed to park right outside.
I cant wait to return and try more of the excellent food.
A. A.
Excellent food, great atmosphere and very well attended to!
Hemant in particular was just outstanding - we'll certainly be returning!

A firm favourite of mine in Bedford. The Cochin offers something a little different, and it really feels as though you are on holiday as you go into the restaurant. The food is truly delicious with great vegan and veggie options - and the service is always exceptional.

This restaurant was recommended by my girlfriends' brother as being a genuine source of Indian cuisine. I had to book the table in advance but we were the only customers when we arrived. Service was quick, the portions were generous, filling and delicious. I wanted to try a dessert but I was already way too full. Excellent value for money and refused a tip!
Definitely going again when I'm next in Bedford.
C. 2.
Very authentic food and so well priced. Great service also! You will not be disappointed
P. S.
Great food, that was how we imagine Indian home cooking tastes like. We will for sure visit again.
E. S.
Seriously great food and experience; we were looking for something authentic and different to your typical curry house that caters to British taste. This was amazing and exceeded our expectations. The dosa and chef's specials in particular were delicious.
M. B.
Great food and very good service, staff is very attentive and kind. Excellente experience every time I come. Cheap price.

Had meal in there today with family. Can't believe I haven't been there before. Authentic and delicious southern Indian food. Blows the rest of them out of the water around that area. Definately substance over style here, compared to the rest. Amazing tasty dishes and great portion sizes. Will definately be back!

Hey Google, show me the best Indian (Kerala) Restaurant in the United Kingdom!
What not to say in their review.... such a wonderful experience that we had yesterday. Great food, fantastic service and very reasonable prices. This Indian/ Kerala restaurant is a hidden gem in Bedford and Milton Keynes. Take my word ( being a Keralite and Pan Indian)..... you will not be disappointed if this restaurant continues to maintain it's consistency of service, quality and costs. Parking can be found in the nearby streets. A hidden gem....in my humble opinion, this is the best Kerala (Indian) Restaurant in the whole of the UK that I have dined in so far. If you want to ask me suggestions, Go for it!!!
D. E.
We've enjoyed takeaways from this restaurant many times: this was the first time sitting in. The service was friendly and the meal delicious: it tasted better straight from the kitchen, rather than after the delay inherent in takeaways. This would have been a 5-star review: the only blemish was the almost one hour delay between ordering and being served.
J. I.
Excellent food, very good prices and vegan options available

Cochin Fish Curry, Lamb & Spinach Curry, Palak Paneer, Coconut Rice, Lemon Rice
Wow, delivered bang on time, to the minute, hot, fresh and absolutely delicious as usual. I had never really liked fish curry but Cochin has changed my opinion (I tried a bit of my wife’s meal, shhh). The lamb was melt in the mouth with a little bit of resistance and perfectly cooked. Extremely tasty and very well balanced delicate with enough spice that leaves you wanting just another spoonful please.
If you like Saag Paneer, which I do, then you will adore Palak Paneer, it is simply on another level.
If you visit this restaurant you will be met with a level of service that matches the high quality delicious food and they will advise on which rice or sides will make the perfect match. I cannot recommend highly enough, but then again, it all comes down to individual preference. You will not get your usual “Ruby” in here.

One of the BEST Indian restaurants in Bedford!
Food is always tasty, served hot and the staff are really friendly and knowledgeable, always ready to help you make your choices.
Reasonably priced too and we always manage to get seated, although best to book at Weekends.
I would 100% recommend The Cochin!
D. N.
My family recommended the food and I thoroughly enjoyed the food and it was quite reasonable cost. The restaurant is quite basic but clean and tidy. I recommend you try this food - I’m sure you won’t be disappointed
P. P.
Not a big fan of Indian food but gave this a try as I wanted to see what the fuss is about this restaurant. The service was really good, the food is as nice as people say, the menu was a little confusing, the portion size is poor (this is true to all Indian restaurants) and the lack of meat in dishes with crazy amounts of sauce (also true to all Indian restaurants) is my only gripe. At least now I know for sure that Indian cuisine is not for me. Mind, this doesn't mean that the Cochin is bad. If you like Indian food the Cochin is there for you.
A. C.
Lovely atmosphere, very friendly and helpful service. Food was excellent - warning to the wise as large portions, but fairly authentically Indian with good spicing. Only potential downside is the slightly long wait for food, but in my opinion the quality makes up for it.
S.
Great south Indian food. To my surprise the food war really nice, will definitely try again.
R. D.
As a South Indian who's recently moved to the area, I was pleased to find The Cochin offering authentic dishes. We opted for a takeaway (obviously due to Covid) of Masala Dosa, the fish curry and the aubergine curry. The masala dosa was pretty good however I know it's really meant to be eaten fresh so I'm looking forward to doing that when we can! The fish and aubergine curry however were mind blowing! So much more creamy than when my mum makes it (don't tell her!) and absolutely delicious. The portions were also generous and the price was fair. We'll definitely be coming back again. Note: I'd have prefered the Chilli Paneer a bit dryer so I'd have to mark you down to 4.99 stars instead.
L. D.
Very happy with this restaurant, we booked it for a Vegan colleagues birthday and were not disappointed with the service, ambiance and quality of food and drinks.
everything we ate we discussed and passed around... that's the sign of good food in a good restaurant.
I urge anyone who fancies trying a new twist on your bog standard Indian food to go here... you will not not regret it.
A. C.
We go once in a while to enjoy Kerala food. Staff are friendly, Food is tasty and service is Good. A definite visit for anyone who wants to taste an Indian curry different to you general curry houses(Bengali/North Indian). This is Genuine South Indian food.
R. K.
Absolutely wonderful! I called to order a vegan meal and they were extremely helpful. The food was absolutely delicious and very light compared to the Indian meals I've had in the past. Will definitely order again. Good job The Cochin.
R. F.
Dined here for Sunday lunch, delightful lunch, enjoyed a Masala Dhosa and feast platter which had seven different cherries on it. This dish is great value as comes with a starter and and desert.
The flavours I felt were authentic and all enjoyable. Two beers and the bill was £27.00
M. H.
Nice place for some south Indian tea or Dinner. Good service and nice place to accommodate around 45 people. Good place for a small gathering. Parking is not that convenient and on the road, you may spend a bit of time finding one. Just in the heart of Bedford town centre.
S. Y.
I went here on a large group outing. This is the second time we've done the same thing and both times have been a good experience.
The staff are very attentive and drinks come out fairly quickly. The food is pretty good. Not all to my taste, but others enjoyed what we had.
The guys at the cochin restaurant layed on a kind of taster menu for us, with poppadom, approx 4 starters, 4 mains and an extra between the starter and main (strange potato wrap). All very nice. We did have a pudding as well, but it was eeeerrrrrmmm. Hmmmmm, different. If you have pudding at an Indian, you'll know what I mean. It wasnt bad, just odd.
All in all a very pleasant evening.
Thanks
P. B.
Always a great evening out. Fabulous food, service is a bit basic but... Well worth a visit... Superb!
I. A.
Awesome place for authentic, delicious food with very good ambiance and service. Worth trying it😍
E. M.
Wonderful Kerala cuisine. Lots of dishes you won't find anywhere else. Helpful staff will guide you through the very reasonably priced menu. I'll definitely be back.
T. M.
When you arrive, you are warmly welcomed into the restaurant. If needed, the staff will help decide the best meal for you, or to try something new to you. The food is amazing, fresh and very tasty. Well worth a visit if you haven't been.
A. A.
I was a little out of my comfort zone as I've never tried and was sceptical about South Indian food. However, the food was beautiful and the customer service was superb.
Thank you. We will definitely be back.
N. P.
I've never had Southern Indian food before, the whole meal was fantastic and you wasn't rushed. I have had a few take aways since, always good. Totally advise.
A. C.
Authentic Kerala (South Indian) food.
Have been going here for the past 4 years and the food is so good. The non-veg thali's I usually have are really good for sampling a lot of dishes.
The Biryani style is more on the sweeter side (which the authentic) and I would highly recommend that as well!!!
A. w.
Fantastic food!
Very different, nice warm atmosphere, friendly staff and overall a lovely eating place!
And all freshly made food and make their own chutneys which is awsome! Love the authenticity!
S. K.
Amazing authentic food, great staff, wonderful service. Try it, you won’t be disappointed. Easily the best Indian Restaurant in the area. Keep up the good work
D. G.
Visited this restaurant after reading reviews from Google Reviews. Wanted to go for vegetarian options but they had limited vegetarian options. Not a great range of dosas either. Portion size of Sambhar with the dosa was too small. Had to ask the staff to provide big bowl but they hesitated. Menu had no (V) written next to the dishes. Dosa taste was excellent. Starter chilli paneer was bit of a sweet. Ambience was nice but hot it the restaurant.
P. “. P. R.
Food was delicious, the best Indian in Bedford by far! Spices are perfectly used and each dish tastes different not is a variation of heat but flavours unlike othr resturants.
Service was great too, a wonderful young lady served us and looked after us by explaining each dish and keeping us entertained like a host rather than just a waitress.
Inside was cosy and could probavly do with a makeover as the magic of the food is not complemented by the decor... however dont be fooled by all the glistens elsewhere, you go to eat so my choice would be Cochin everytime, if you are fussed about how the place looks then you will miss out on great food.
D. C.
Been to this place three times now and staff are always friendly welcoming and helpful about the menu. The fish dishes ive had are awesome and had the aubergine curry you would not miss eating meat if you try this dish so much flavorful stuff to try great for vegetarian food fish and also meat dish will be going back soon and taking people there from outside bedford to experience this place if your a visitor in bedford go and experience this place
A. L.
Great tasting food and the menu offers a different choice of meals compared to other Indian restaurants in the area. Service was a bit muddled, but everyone has their off days. Would go back again.
T. A.
Authentic kerala food and friendly staff.
D. C.
Even though one of our party had been to Kerala numerous times, we still didn't really know what we wanted to get. The waiters were very helpful in selecting a smattering of different dishes. Obviously one of the more popular places in town, because it was packed.
Order the dosa and have your mind blown.
S. P.
As always... Excellent food from the South Indian province of Kerala, rice based breads naturally gluten free offering a refreshing change from the normal Northern dishes. Special favourites include fish curry, prawn curry and a spicy lamb dish which we call "lamb unpronounceable" (ularthiatu).
s. a.
The food is delicious. The atmosphere in the restaurant is relaxing. From the waiter to the manager the staff is very professional and well mannered. We will definitely come back. Thank you for this lovely experience.
S.
Good restaurant for South Indian taste. I feel cardamom is a bit excessive. Overall nice experience.
A. K.
Amazing vegetarian food.....🤩
A. X.
This is what is called as authentic Indian food...flavor, delicate taste and the aroma of dishes brining back the memories of back home. Extremely happy with the home style cooked food here at The Cochin which you won't find in any of the so called Indian restaurants in Bedford!!
I. S.
Wonderful - this is Indian food unlike all the other restaurants. Famed for their Dosa, and the other breads are a treat. All the usual favourites are available though. Highly recommended
G. K.
Authentic South Indian food. Lamb dosa, vada, parathas, appam and chicken curry were all delicious.
P. F.
Was introduced to this place by a friend, the food is out of this world, my first introduction to keralan food from southern India. Will definitely be back. Staff are as pleasant as the food!
R. k.
Lovely authentic South Indian food. Very relaxed and laid-back dining experience. Very reasonable prices. Simple decor.
G. W.
We've been to Kerala in India many times and have looked far and wide to find a restaurant that cooks authentic food such as we have experienced over there. Bifin one of the waiters is very polite and very friendly and helps to make the visit to The Cochin more enjoyable.
Try the Masala Dosa, its a shame the chef doesnt do Uttapam.
K. M.
Something different to your average Indian. Fresh, artfully spiced Keralan beach food and meals. Specialises in fish and seafood. Try a new take on calamari to start, then delightful kingfish curry with rice cakes (appam). Drink with chai or nimbu pani if you prefer no alcohol. Staff are lovely, and Cochin is run as a staff cooperative - who knew? One of my favourite places to eat.
R.
Called in 1st time with two visiting friends.
Fabulous food with a difference, wonderful and unusual flavours, staff great, we were looked after by D J and Tina, who were enthusiastic in helping us choose from the menu.
Give this place a try, you won't be disappointed. Regards from Ray

Best curry in Bedford. Not your usual curry fare, much more fish dishes and fragrant food. Laid back atmosphere.

At last a restaurant that sells proper south indian food. It was delicious and there was plenty of it at a reasonable price too. Sad about the service, the waiter was very stiff and not very helpful, maybe a communication problem but I am still going there tonight.
J. J.
