Reviews of The French Horn
G. P.
Had a great Sunday lunch. Good to see the pub and restaurant doing so well after lockdown. Relaxed atmosphere and staff who were eager to help and had a natural smile! A nice touch was being asked how we would like our beef roast cooked. Very good value for money. We will be back again.
H. A.
What an amazing place, delicious food, excellent service. Had a wonderful evening out. Thank you xxx
A. S.
Had not been here since before the pandemic. We went for Sunday lunch and it was excellent. As with previous visits the food quality was excellent, with good sized portions. Selection and menu are very good and the seating comfortable. Will certainly be returning soon.
h. d.
I came to this place based on its excellent google reviews. The menu and food did not disappoint!
I was a little annoyed that i wasnt offered the specials by my server and after i had ordered a different server offered the table next to me - garlic king prawns tail on and 10oz rump - sounds amazing!
I had snails for the first time, tasted like chewy dirt but that was taste preference. They were cooked to perfection, my chicken kiev was the best ive ever tasted and the vegetables..... makes me want to move closer 😂
The staff were friendly, attentitve although they were so busy as it was a saturday evening.
Drinks and food reasonably priced. If i lived closer i would be here every week. 10/10 for food. 4/5 for service.
A. H.
Great pub , landlady very friendly , stopped here for a pint . Restaurant and menu looked very good
G. F. S.
Great quality food and 1st class service 👌
S. D.
We had a great lunch. Excellent value for money. Great attention from Dave despite our musical chairs. Thank you Dave, Jade and Steve for a memorable lunch. We’ll be back.
A. M. Z.
Amazing rare roast beef, and the smoothest of crème brûlée. Thank you for an excellent Sunday lunch. Everything about The French Horn is good. Will be going back again and again.

We have recently visited several time over the christmas and new year with my 2 dogs (gracie and Betty for the people we met) and my partner. The staff have been very nice, helpful in regards to the dogs and all round lovely!
The bar area is relaxed and chatty in retaliation to the restaurant which is very well tuck away so you have the meal your after.
Thank you for the hospitality
A. S.
Had lunch in The French Horn a few weeks ago after a windy dog walk at Sharpenhoe Clappers - the owners also now have The Crooked Billet which is my local, so we thought we'd check it out.
I had the sausage and onion sandwich with quite possibly the best skin on fries I've eaten in a long time!
The staff were really friendly and the bar had a nice atmosphere. It's quite a big pub with large dining areas and I imagine gets very busy in the summer.
All in all, well worth a visit if you're in the area.
S. A.
All round excellent service and food. Probably one of the best in Bedfordshire.
H. W.
Fabulous food, pleasant atmosphere and our servers, Eva and Daniel, were first class. Everyone on our table for four thoroughly enjoyed their meal. Definitely recommended.
S. J.
Great food, attentive helpful staff, I really enjoyed my birthday lunch. Thank you all
a. l.
Great food steak night on Tuesdays. Half price steak. Great service too.
M. H.
Had rump steak this evenings steak night ! Truly superb not had such a great steak in ages cooked to perfection
C. S.
Beautiful country pub, all low beams and atmosphere. Great menu and excellent food and staff. Highly recommend
D. C.
Comfortable pub with a small but well formed menu. All the food we ordered was great. I had the all-day breakfast burger, which you might think sounds awful, but was really well done. At risk if making it sound bad again, it had a similar taste to a McDonald's sausage and egg McMuffin. So nice!
C.
Lovely looking place, very friendly staff. Went for a Sunday lunch and to be honest, was disappointed to say the least. I last ate here about 2 years ago and loved it.but this time around the roasts had been sitting around all afternoon and the skin was like leather, beef its self was okay, but the rest was not up to standard unfortunately. Apparently its under new management as of recent.
S.
Good family pub resturant in the middle of Bedfordshire county a place called Steppingley so beautiful there 😊😊
R. M.
Just had an excellent meal. Five ladies that lunch on a Wednesday and we all said how good our meal was, and the staff were very friendly. Will certainly go there again and recommend it to friends.
G. R.
An old school pub, service seemed a little a stressed and rushed. Food was ok, I had the fillet which had a bit of fat running through and lacked any crust from searing, there are much better steaks available locally. Rest of menu very limited but looked nice.
J. E. C. (.
We went once as we are new to the area. A lot more expensive than ANY OTHER green king I have been to before. Nice atmosphere. Loved all the girls that worked here. Always called you sir which is really nice. I do remember they forgot about our food order and when I went to the bar (after an hour) and said not to bother with it and asked for a refund the manager or owner came out and said you could have shouted?
At the time I just couldn't believe it. I shouldn't have to shout for my food in a restaurant... unbelievable.
Not sure I would go again due to this. Shame really.
J. L.
We had a wonderful family meal for 10 adults plus 3 little ones. Food was delicious, staff were very friendly, attentive and accommodating. Would definitely recommend.
D. D.
Food was excellent and service OK. What have they done to the restuarant that used to be full of character and charm but which is now modern brightly lit and soulless and does not fit in with the character of the pub
A. M.
Came here yesterday afternoon as we drove past on an off chance and decided to see if we could get a Sunday roast. Firstly this is a lovely pub, really ambient and cosy and warm! The staff were super polite and considering we had not booked they were very accommodating and we had a table in less than the time it took us to finish a drink by the bar. We each had the roast and it was really lovely, just good quality delicious food and I would absolutely come back here again. Was a really lovely experience and I would absolutely recommend it to anyone!
G. D.
Excellent restaurant, good menu choices and very good food at a reasonable price. Environment and service very good too. Nice combination of English food with a French flourish.
M. S. (.
First time visiting tonight. Apart from a bit of a delay from ordering to receiving food (which they were very apologetic for and were clearly rushed off their feet due to the great weather) the overall experience was really good. We went on Burger night and the burgers were absolutely great. The portion sizes were good and the food cooked to perfection.
The staff although rushed off their feet were very attentive without being intrusive.
Both my wife and myself really enjoyed the experience. The pub was very clean and is dog friendly which is nice. We will definitely be back. Thank you.
M. R.
Very pleased good food recommended by granddaughters who had been befor thay are very fussy eaters but finished it all of great thanks.
K. B.
What a fantastic Valentine's meal we had last night, the best we've had anywhere in a long while. Thanks to Jean-claude and his team. The hospitality is second to none. It is so warm when you arrive, in every sense of the word and the menu is vast and varied. The quality of food is excellent. Can't fault the place.
Thanks once again, we will be back and usually are for lunch with our dog (Mollie).
friendly place
S. P.
For some reason we were put in the bar, away from the main restaurant, we felt we were in a hallway, with the staff coming & going pass us. Drinks were slow to appear. Starter came & there was quite a long wait for the main meal to arrive. The food was average, with a smallish selection of unexciting meals available. We will not be returning.
P.
Friday evening meal here with friends. No complaints at all. Lovely food, good service, friendly waitresses. Will go again.
K. S.
Great meal, very nice.
L. U.
Found this place by chance. Stopped for a drink. Very friendly staff. Nice little beer garden. Wouldn't mind eating there next time. Looks good
T. S.
Had Sunday lunch here today. The staff were really polite and were very efficient. Lunch was lovely, the food was really really good. We will definitely return.
S. W.
Amazing food, excellent staff! Thank you yet again for a great experience
J. N.
A great place, very good food and friendly staff. The French Horn is consistently good with a cosy feel, especially in winter when the log fire is on. A perfect place for date nights.
D. M.
Excellent food and value for money. Gammon steak was fantastic. Cannot wait to go back.
K. C.
Stumbled on this lovely pub. New menu every day, fantastic service and the food we had was very tasty, well presented and good portion sizes. Children's menu too, with high chair and baby changing facilities. Dogs also welcome, and there was a water bowl waiting out front with fresh water!
L. L.
Really nicely decorated pub, very cosy and has plenty of charm. Potential for 5. However, our meal was scattered with downgrades, wine served in a dirty, lipstick marked glass, struggled to get service for both a desert menu and our bill and last of all some hours after my fish and chips I had a stomach ache. Food did taste nice however so overall a 3.
l. m.
Made to feel very welcome from the minute you arrive. I had the Skate Wings with burnt butter and it was delicious. The staff were attentive and very friendly.
Sat in the room with the huge comfy sofas after dinner with a drink. Have been meaning to try The French Horn and i'm very glad i did.
J. F.
Lovely place to have lunch or dinner, food is well prepared and always tasty. Very friendly staff who can't do enough for you. Nice shabby chic decor with comfortable seating at tables or sofas by the fire. Good selection of wines. Often see dogs in the pub and we have taken ours there plenty of times in the summer. Cute outdoor garden. No space for children to run around inside doing you're bringing them with you then they'll need to be able to sit at tables quietly, in the summer there is the village green around the back they could play on if supervised.
j. s.
Lovely Sunday lunch in a nice friendly atmosphere. Food was excellent and beef cooked to perfection will definitely be going again very soon
R. G.
Used to be much nicer. Needs a good hoover & dust. I love dogs but 1 pooped & peed where we were eating. Not nice. Furniture very tired ( not shabby chic ). Food & service were good. People drinking at the bar so you couldn’t get to it. Take away the stools? Won’t hurry back.
D. j.
We loved the French Horn after going there for a birthday meal. The food was fab and the menu was varied with the food being beautifully presented. It's not the cheapest restaurant around but you are paying for the quality of the food and the surroundings, I would definatley recommend it.
E. S.
I Had been very disappointed in the past with the way this pub operates with bookings etc but the food is amazing there. At some
Point I went there without a booking and although there were many tables available I was told I couldn’t stay cause I did not have a reservation.
Tips;
- Always call them and book a table! ALWAYS!
- On Sundays order the pork shoulder roast without any sides etc cause it’s more than enough
- The burgers during weekdays are amazing
- The place is nice an clean but sometimes the management feels a bit weird and although they say hello , if feels like they really want to say get out of here
- Staff members are lovely (so far) although on Sunday’s they have lots of reservations so they want you to
1) sit
2) eat
3) pay
4) run away as fast as possible
But again the food is lovely ....
When people go out to eat they don’t have to compromise in mediocre experiences... they go out to have fun and get the full package.
Customer service , environment, good food.
That’s the reason I gave 3stars
But the food is lovely ...
J. G.
On my resent stay in the UK I popped into this delightful pub for a quick refreshment but the menu was to tempting and we ended up having lunch. I chose pea and ham soup which was more ham than soup it was the best soup I have had in a very long while, my sister-in-law had a huge open BLT that she said was very nice . Pop in and have a meal you won't be disappointed.
W. R.
Very nice country pub with log burner and wooden ceiling beams. Excellent choice of food on the lunch menu from small bits to large meals. Will be going back for more!
S. P.
Great place, great food, new French owner/ Menu.
M. W.
Lovely pub, only popped in for a drink but really friendly staff and food area looked busy, so I'm assuming very good food. Cosy fire and leather chairs and sofas to sit on. Would happily come back and try the food next time.
C. W.
Had fish and chips for Sunday lunch. Great fish and truly fantastic chips! Service a bit slow because it was very busy. Coffee slopped in the saucer at the end, which was a shame, but overall a great experience. Will be visiting again.
J. W.
Absolutely delicious food. The pea and mint soup was packed with flavour and the whole plaice was beautifully tender and tasty. We'll definitely be going back. Recommend without hesitation.
S. P.
In afraid to say I feel this restaurant was a little overpriced. I very much enjoyed my starter however I didn't enjoy my main so much. I ordered a steak, loved the chips, loved the sauce however the steak itself was way too fatty and a bit of a let down. I could only eat half of it which was a real shame. The service however was very friendly and I would definitely try here again, but just order something else.
L. A.
Dog friendly bar and we had a very pleasant lunch. Polite staff and nice atmosphere.
A. S.
Nice staff. Went for Sunday Lunch. Busy place with loads of children at the time we were there, but all well behaved. The food was good. Unlimited yorkshire pudding.
A. w.
A really superb meal last week. I went with my parents. The food delicious, full of interesting flavours a good choice on the menu and beautifully cooked and presented and the service was very good.
N. I.
Lovely lunch in a proper country pub. Friendly service, relaxed atmosphere and delicious food. Great for all ages and the perfect place to meet up with friends and family. Hoping to go back soon!
a. a.
Great staff, incredible food beautiful location
we had a wonderful afternoon
Best to book before you go
N. S.
Very friendly and welcoming pub with excellent food, French bistro style, and good beer. Dog-friendly with nice terrace at the back if the weather is kind.
J. B.
Excellent food with a nice variety on the menu, good atmosphere, very friendly staff. A little small for tall people, and some of the tables a tight squeeze. But overall a great experience.
E. R.
The French Horn used to be the place to go for really good food. It then went down hill badly. I'm very happy to say the new owners have turned things around and once again it's a great place to eat once again.
M. M.
Only been in here for drinks, very nice small country pub. Only niggle (and I guess it can't be helped really) is there isn't a huge amount of seating if you're just having drinks so it can be hard to find space sometimes.
K. B.
Excellent food and service as usual though a bit chilly in there today
J. B.
Good varied Sunday Lunch menu, well cooked and presented. Friendly and attentive service. Excellent value too. Not found anywhere better locally so five stars.
G. T.
If you're looking for a harvester type pub, this is not it. If you want great food and good service and don't mind paying a little extra, then you won't be disappointed. We will definitely revisit The French Horn.
V. H.
Haven't been for quite awhile, bit apprehensive as first visit to a pub .But a pleasure to dine there all safety measures in place and adhered to .Friendly welcoming staff nothing was too much trouble ,oh and the food Excellent mostly french .
T. C.

Stopped by on the way back from Woburn Safari Park. Nice food and friendly service.
T.
Can't remeber much so it must of been ok
M. J.
Great atmosphere welcoming and lovely food
A. S.
We expected a new menu, the beer selection was limited, food was great, atmosphere cold when we arrived and then too hot while dining, will be a great restaurant once they iron out the imperfections, I'm sure they will get 5 stars next time we visit
J. T.
especially welcoming manager makes you feel at home. delicious traditional french dishes and sides.friendly aim to please staff.
C. N.
Very clean, bright and spacious, lovely food, pleasant staff x
R. M.
French Horn was indeed one of the best pubs around central Bedfordshire but unfortunately, for a reason I don t know, they closed their doors and moved away, giving space to other restaurant. The food was fantastic and the atmosphere was fantastic...
S. B.
Love this place. Whether for a quick pint after work, a romantic meal à deux or a family occasion, JC, Richard and the team will look after you with the most delicious food. Definitely worth a try
S. P.
It is a really nice pub experience.
The bar service was excellent. Even for a quiet time there was an attention to is as customers that is essential for a good pub experience.
b. X.
It's was absolutely amazing, the best service I have ever had at any restraunt. The food was Fantastic and the servers and bartenders were so friendly I reccoment it to EVERYONE!!!
J. B.

C. M.
We went here for a birthday lunch. The food was very tasty and also good to see it was family friendly. Will definitely be visiting again with our little son.
L. B.
First time here tonight and I have to say, it's the nicest meal we've had out in ages, staff were fantastic, well done, and will definitely be back👍👏🏻
r.
A very pleasant pub in an idyllic Bedfordshire village. The interior is very quaint and oldy-worldy. Foody pub but not many in when we visited. Lovely outside drinking area for the summer. The only draw back is that it's Greene King, one of my least favourite pub chains. Greene King IPA and Taylor's landlord (doesn't travel well) are the only cask offerings.
R. G.
Lovely food and outdoor area. Close to Steppingley Park so kids can play in the park. Spent a lovely Bank Holiday here with meal and drinks with friends. Staff all V friendly.

P. C.
Great food, great service, lovely warm fire in the bar. A French menu includes snails. French speakers serve the tables
c. d.
Stoped in on the way home. Not far off the motorway, much better than a service station. British classics and some French favourite on the menu. We will be back.
M. S.
