Reviews of Sugardough
J. P.
I was shocked by the £4 price for the croissant, but as I sat on the blue table outside, eating that croissant and soaking in the beautiful vibe and scenery, people watching, I guess I'm paying for the experience too, and it was a lovely experience, the croissant, butter and jam are clearly high quality. As a rare treat it was worth it. Just a warning, this is an expensive café.
K.
Nice place, good service. Lots of choices for breakfast not just English Breakfast. You also can have a earlier lunch for your breakfast if you are super hungry! Small but comfortable place inside. Recommend
I. K.
This is such a lovely and cosy place in the Lanes. We went for some lemonade, hot chocolate and some wonderful cakes (Orange & Almond cake and the Salted Caramel Banoffee cake). The staff is very friendly and the place is clean. Will definitely come again for more scrumptious cakes!!
M. W.
Such a nice cosy place, great coffee and cakes and many interesting lunch options! Wonderful staff, great service, I would make this my go-to spot to have lunch.
I. N.
Great place for a pit stop whilst shopping. We had the humous, banoffee cake and drinks. Friendly staff and delicious food
R. D.
Delicious handmade bread, pastries, breakie. Coffee is strong & delicious. The cheese toastie, throw in some bacon, so morish. Pick & mix your favourite options for breakfast, avocado, poached eggs plus sourdough bread. Back again in July 2021 & 2022 and still my favourite breakfast place in Brighton.
T. C.
This is a great place. Do you know they do a hot chocolate drink with Bailey's in it. The food is just as awesome and the front of house team are brilliant. Go there, you won't regret it
I.
Good service, delicious cakes, super yummy drinks! The interior is very cozy and trendy too. Good that if you want to stop by and recharge yourself with some good food and drinks!
A. W.
Dropped in for tea and cake. Cake very good and quite a few choices of flavour. Casual dining in the heart of Brighton. Friendly service.
s. b.
Had a very lovely breakfast. There was no issue with the food, but like a lot of the UK, they seemed unprepared to deal with today's heat wave, which meant service was quite slow, and inside the cafe was actually hotter than outside.
H. G.
Absolutely delicious cakes, we started by sharing one but it simply wasn’t enough and had to get some more. Nice selection of hot teas and other food. Didn’t get 5 stars from me because I found the waitresses to be a bit ill-informed and slow, they did mess up our very simple order twice, although it was a very busy Sunday morning so didn’t consider it too bad.
S. T.
Best scrambled eggs I have had for a long time. The toasted french croissant was also delicious. The iced coffee was ideal for a hot day. Despite it being a bit pricey (coffee was 4 pounds, scrambled eggs 11 pounds), I would go again.
N. S.
Sumptuous cakes & great tea. What more could you want on an afternoon?
The cakes all sounded amazing. The two my partner & I had were delicious & huge slices!
The place itself is small but welcoming. The staff were excellent.
Well worth a visit.
L. G.
The tea was so nice here(large leaf English breakfast) I've taken a photo of the tea supplier to get some for home... we stopped for drinks, but then the cakes looked so inviting we all took something home.. they were delicious...
M. R.
Mmmm ... Went to Sugardough today for a tasty treat! I just love their lemon meringue pie: Yummy! And, I enjoyed a real hot chocolate to drink, too. Very good. 👍😋🤗
B.
Tea was good, service was good, location is great. Ordered the raspberry lemon cake and it was dry.
M. L.
Just called in for two takeaway drinks, which took far too long to be made.
The staff were really friendly.
Place busy.
Great looking place, decor, image etc...
Fantastic location
Not really too sure about having so much uncovered / unprotected food on display in such a small amount of space though. Some of the cakes looked old and dry.
A little disappointed as this place should be absolutely rocking - but it isn't... maybe we called at a bad time
B. B.
Quite a cosy, laid back place. Their lemon and ginger tea tastes more like a regular Earl Gray though... At first I was disappointed with the service. The staff didn’t seem particularly friendly, then I waited for my cheese cornbread for 20 mins just to learn they forgot about the order. In the end I got it on the house, which made up for my bad first impression.
I appreciate the eco-friendly touch of the place! If you bring your own cup for takeaway coffee/tea, you get a discount.

Lovely little cafe patisserie in the centre of the city amongst the picturesque little paved streets of Brighton! Friendly staff, great service, fresh products of very good quality. Had already twice our breakfast there. Very good Cappuccino and the choice of alternative non dairy milk for tea and coffee. Highly recommend the 'all breakfast Danish', almond croissant and mocha.
N. W.
Not cheap but very good quality, proper holiday treat. The single greatest croissant I've ever eaten, and I've eaten a lot, in fact, I'd call myself a croissant expert. And this was the best. Great breakfasts too, and they sell beer! Bonus.
J. G.
Lovely little cafe with great staff. Could fault it. Lovely for breakfast.
R. W.
A very friendly welcome. Breakfast was delicious and coffee great. Highly recommended 😁
T. B.
We only stopped by Sugardough to have a coffee as we noticed that they were open until late. We didn't expect them to also have a menu, so we decided to have our evening meal here. It was the best decision we could have made as the food was excellent, and far better than one could reasonably expect from a bakery that usually sells coffee and baked goods. It's not the typical, predictable fare you would typically be presented with. Just check out the menu and you'll see what I mean. The whole experience was unexpected and a very pleasant surprise.
We will definitely be returning and highly recommend them to anyone looking for excellent food and very friendly people. Oh, and they allow dogs too.
S. S.
Our preferred breakfast spot in Brighton. The Turkish cilbir eggs is the best breakfast I have ever had.
E. m.
Kind friendly staff and a lovely little location. Great hot drink selection, served efficiently. Good covid measures too! Temp taken on arrival.
D. M.
Love it, food was spot on, and service amazing.
Happy place to be.
Well done
A. B.
Food was really delicious, but sadly service was (friendly but) disappointing. I had a table outside and had to ask four times for some water (not a lot to ask at breakfast) and towards the end nobody came outside so I had to go inside repeatedly for service. Could've just been short staffed so would try it again as the food was fab.
A. R.
Small but perfectly formed. This little quaint place offers lovely food and drink. Great place to stop in for a bite to eat. You can even get a glass of wine or processco. The cheesecake was sublime. Really worth checking this place out. 👌
P. I. T. T.
Great place to shop off for a coffee and a snack. Their kitchen wasn't open when we went which was a shame, but the coffee made up for it. Amazing.
r. j. r.
Friendly staff. Loose tea. Nice outside
seating. Great position.
D. C.
HAVE.THE.TURKISH.EGGS. I've eaten all over the world, from greasy spoons to michelin starred restaurants, and they are one of the best things I've ever eaten! Also the breakfast Danish is amazing too
H. B.
Always fresh and tasty food and coffee. I recommend their Turkish eggs... and all of their cakes
A. S.
Very nice cakes excellent service coffee good
S. M.
A welcome break after walking around the town. Set in the Lanes, lots of nice treats and drinks.
S. P.
Nice laid-back place. Coffee was excellent, as was the cake. You can feel and taste some passion in the baked goods! Prices were a bit higher than in other places, but that is to be expected from an independent bakery.
I especially loved the mismatched interior and the cutlery presented on the table.
k. g.
Myself and my wife had a delightful experience here and had some wonderful coffee and cake! The cake was so fresh and the coffee was beautifully crafted.we were served by two lovely young men called Frank and Guy, they were so polite and accomodating. We'll definitely be visiting here again!
L. B.
Love this place. Ordered for the second time their ham hock croque madam and it never disappoints. Girlfriend ordered pancakes and they were great too! Having to leave without buying any pastries is a difficult thing to do. Would highly recommend everything about this place. Food, staff, coffee etc.
C. M.
Good breakfast menu with items such as Turkish eggs
j. B.
Wow, what a find. It's my first visit to Brighton and wasnt sure where to go for lunch. They welcomed me and my poodle in the food was delicious very highly recommended and wonderful location. I cant wait to come back and treat my friends. Definitely 5 stars.
S. C.
Great location for people watching, friendly staff. Lovely coffee, cakes etc so much nicer than a chain coffee shop for elevenses!
J. B.
Delicious lemon meringue pie and orange and almond cake, with 2 peach Bellini's
H. M.
Such nice people! We arrived at 6:20 pm and they still served coffee (outside) even though they close at 6:30. The cakes are very tempting but we have dinner soon - come back during the week. Sugardough has some special memories
N.
Come here last week for an afternoon treat and my gosh the cakes really really good only down fall is all the butter cream is a-bit too buttery when eating and can be a bit too heavy. But I love the ideas how they change daily plus the staff are very friendly that’s one thing I notice about brighton everyone is so chilled and very open.
D. A.
Great place, though horribly understaffed. The overworked staff are amazingly cheerful and helpful and the food and cakes are fantastic.
Why anyone would queue to get into a horrible chain like 'Gails' when this place is nearby defeats me.
Not cheap but good value.
Note to management - more staff would improve the experience for everyone.
k. q.
5 star food and service. Frank and Izzy were both very friendly, helpful, and as I arrived a customer gave Frank a big hug to say thank you. The food was delicious and well presented. Slightly smaller than expected, as feeling rather peckish, but incredibly nice. I had the Turkish eggs and the turmeric flat white - both of which I had not tried before. It was midday and I was on my own and sat outside, watching an excellent singer/guitarist called Will Hanco from Yorkshire, who I hope does very well for himself. Great food, atmosphere, heart of the Lanes.
J. R.
Stodgy overly sweet cakes, not much idea of how to balance flavours. Difficult to find something you want to eat here. Better than a chain, with some nice things, but really, their idea of a cake is a heavy as a brick with a ton of sugar thrown in.
S. M.
Visited as The Breakfast Club was rammed (25 minute wait for table - unfortunately hangry so couldn't wait). Went for the Turkish Eggs (poached eggs, yogurt, garlic & chilli oil) with tomato brioche toastie & a Cappuccino. Delicious, but had to add salt otherwise would have been bland. The brioche was amazing. Good coffee (well balanced flavour, no bitterness). When paying the bill I picked up a wholegrain sourdough loaf. In total paid £15 but the sourdough (of which I still have a slice or two) was memorable. Cute decor, friendly staff - will definitely be back.
S. L.
Very pleasant tea room, but did offer some lunches and breakfasts as well. Well managed with good observance of social distancing etc.
S. K.
One of my favourite cafes; consistently delicious coffee, pastries and brioche. Lovely setting, lovely people, my dog and me always get a warm welcome! The best cafe in the lanes.
A. N.
Excellent breakfast and coffee. We had the Turkish eggs which were delicious.
D. T.
An excellent breakfast-in particular, the confetti Bircher.
The staff were wonderful. Everyone was so friendly with my one year old, who loved being the centre of attention! An absolute must for anyone exploring the lanes.
A. I.
So nice here, I would highly recommend the turmeric coffee to drink, it’s the nicest one I’ve ever had and I’ve heard the food is wonderful too. Lovely staff and atmosphere, I come here several times a week to relax and enjoy a hot drink.
Also, pretty much everything here is totally handmade and made fresh which is something I love.
S.
I used to come a lot for their cheese toastie all the way from London, I’ve just moved to Brighton and of course came back to have the same , however unfortunately it was far from what it used to be, barely any cheese in there, weird onions inside, literally more then the cheese, salad on the side was tiny. Very sad , not sure if the Managment change but sorry to say I won’t be going back, given it’s also £7.50 for a cheese sourdough toastie, I notice the quality of toasties in Brighton have gotten so much better. Shame , was a lovely and still is a lovely cafe, very friendly but massive disappointment on the food.
C. W.
Stopped in for breakfast. Helpful staff and awesome food. Great quality and very generous portion sizes. A little on the expensive side, but hey, it's Brighton so no surprise there.
R. C.
A unique independent business, well worth supporting. All food is handmade by sugardough chefs using quality local ingredients, ok it may not always look factory identical but that's the point, their stuff is unique! Really tasty, great atmosphere, the bread is how bread should be, definitely getting mine from here from now on!
T. S.
Wow. Sometimes stopping somewhere randomly really does pay off. We were only looking for a sandwich but we're lured in by the mackerel 3 ways and the glazed pork belly. Yum yum. Really impressed.
H. J.
Lovely little bakery/cafe. Stopped by for cake and tea and was not disappointed. The staff served us quickly and were very friendly. I would definitely recommend stopping by!
A. C.
My favorite cafe in Brighton, great coffee and food made with love and real fresh ingredients. Warm welcome and lovely atmosphere. Love sitting outside and listen to the street musicians.
M. N.
Friendly staff some interesting cakes. I got a cold brew which was the worst ever. So do yourself a favor and get a normal cup of coffee here as others did and looked great.
b. c.
Got a cake delivered for my birthday, absolutely fabulous to look at and the most delicious cake I’ve eaten in ages, lovely attention to detail, thank you sugar dough

L. F.
What a delightful cafe. Beautiful food and lots of organic stuff going on. Nice staff and clean loos. I'll be dreaming about lemon meringue for nights to come.
T. B.
Really great place albeit small. Staff could be a little more attentive by clearing the tables; however, great choices and wonderful coffee.
K. W.
Wow, delicious breakfast and coffee
I. b.

M. R. C.
Nice coffee shop in the heart of the lanes. The local is small but cosy, and has tables outside. Good coffee and cakes! The views to the lanes are perfect.
R. F.
Lovely coffee, we didn't have any food. But it look really nice
N.

A. P.
Coffee was good. Breakfast was average.
M. c.
It was very pleasant and there was a lot of selection. I went for the soup and found that it was especially good with sourdough bread.
M. L.
Stopped in for tea and pastries - food was outstanding and service excellent. The fig jam was a highlight, very dark, almost like treacle.
M. W.
Excellent find wonderful coffee and cakes we enjoyed so much we just had to buy the sourdough bread & the fruit bread to die for -
Your loss if you give it a miss!!
