So good! What a hidden gem. Had dinner last night and still can’t stop thinking about it. Flavours were amazing, it was so good we ordered more of everything! Prices more than reasonable and service was great. New favourite place.

Very nice place to have south indian food in Cardiff. The chef is a gentleman. He is very polite, warm and friendly. The service takes some time as they have less staff to cook and serve, but the taste of the food is definitely worth the little wait. Food was very tasty and homely.
R. P.
Went in with my best friend yesterday. Fabulous experience. Staff were helpful and were patient with us settling in - don’t particularly appreciate staff who rush you so it was brilliant here!! Food came quickly and was so so so delicious I’d love to come again. I had a Lamb Kurma with special Pilau rice! I also had a Mint Lemonade and it was tasty. The atmosphere was welcoming and relaxing and I would love to come back again with my friend and even bring some more friends! The pricing was perfect and there was plenty of selection on the menu. Though the place only accepted cash, there was a cash machine opposite. However, I would like to comment on how it was after we ordered that we saw a very small sign saying it was cash only. If this was advertised on the outside wall or door I would’ve been more prepared. But the waiter was very sweet and allowed me to quickly nip over to grab some cash :)

We're from Tamil Nadu, India. Had been to the restaurant few days back. Very good authentic South Indian especially Chettinadu taste. All items were delicious. The service was excellent.
A. R.

Lovely restaurant to have authentic south Indian food..Staff were warm and friendly & offered an excellent service.. Food was served hot and fresh.. You have plenty of food and dessert choices to choose from.. Would definitely visit again. Totally enjoyed the food and our time visiting the restaurant.

I love this place !!! Let me be honest from the outside the place doesnt look amazing nor is the inside but what keeps you coming back is the food. The cuisine is south indian and its probably the best ive tasted in cardiff. The place is owned by a lovely sweet charming man called Ponnuswamy hence the name. He works the place alone serving and taking orders and always is accommodating. The food is finger licking good. Definitely worth visiting guys. Make your way to this small but amazing place, you wont be disappointed.

Its one of the famous South Indian Restaurant in Cardiff. Here you can find a wide variety of delicious SOUTH INDIAN SPICY FOODS.. Enjoy the variety of Dosa's MasalaDosa Oothappam, Parotta Biriyanis etc at a reasonable price.. Enjoy The Indian Spicy Foods...
R. S.
Really good authentic Indian food. Not very far from the centre of the city, the staff is friendly as well. I loved it bad surely pay another visit.
The Only thing I’d say is that the ambience can improve a bit.
D. B.
Meet Mr. Ponnuswamy who is both head chef and owner with more than 20 years of experience in South Indian cuisine. Excellent host and very good hearted. Try the spicy chicken curry made with black pepper which has to be one of UK's best and keeping in tone with authentic South Indian food taste. If you'd like bland food then try somewhere else. The idlis are soft just as you'd make at home and definitely not microwave like most restaurants do. The biryani is typical south Indian biryani.. with a kick. I'm just blown with the chicken curry. Would love to visit again. Thank you so much.
Also parking is a pain so you'd need to circle around for a spot.
Also made an insta post since it's so good.
J.
Usual go-to restaurant when we are having cravings for south indian food.
+ Amazing food
+ Amazing staff and able to speak indian language (bonus)
+ If craving for Idli or dosa then this restaurant got you covered :)
- Initially got my order wrong but enjoyed accidental "thali" food :)
S. L.
This place provides absolutely tasty and good food, especially for the people who love having Indian food. The person who serves there is very friendly and understanding, and the prices are understandable when compared to the service they give. The food is freshly made, and the restaurant follows all good mannerisms as well. This is my personal favourite restaurant in Cardiff. Love it!
O. B.
We accidentally stumbled across this restaurant, but are so glad that we did. The food is delicious, cheap, and authentic - what more could you want?
Well worth a visit, probably one of the best places on City Road.
N. M.
Amazing South Indian food!! Took my taste buds and heart back home to India❤ My husband and I enjoyed our Sunday brunch with our favourite Mysore Masala Dosa, Poori Potato Masala and Idli Vada and a background music for a complete experience. The filter coffee is amazing and is a must have. If you crave for South Indian food, this is the place to visit. The owner is a dedicated and simple man from India. It is a simple place but delivers in terms of taste and authenticity.
S. P.
The food was authentic and delicious. The portions were alright. Service was good, if a little slow but the food was freshly made and piping hot.
Sambar might disappoint but kothu parotha is a must try, so is the chettinad.
H. S.
Service was slow and the place was busy. The food quality and quantity was amazing. Loved the Dhaka 65 and Masala Dosa and definitely trying the Biryani next time.
N. J.
Authentic and excellent South Indian cuisine - quite different from many UK’s typical “Indian restaurants”. The dishes cooked to order and sometimes brought to your table by the chef makes this almost like an indoor street-food experience. Informal, yet truly excellent food. They do not sell alcoholic drinks but are very happy for you to bring their own with a cheap corkage fee of £1. Try it!
V. G.
Decent food. Can be go to place for south indian food in Cardiff. Quality is decent. Chutneys are great. Idli, vada and dosa taste well too. Sambhar was a bit cold and felt like heating was off in restaurants. Waiter is polite and friendly. It is not a premium restaurant but definitely an option for when you have craving for south indian food.
M. D.
Superb authentic South Indian food. Very reasonable. Good service. Best idlis
s. a.
Best indian food in Cardiff!! Cooked to perfection, very spicy! Super good 🙏🙏👌👌
S. B.
Great place to have South Indian food. Owner is friendly. Only drawback is this place struggles to serve when crowded. This is mainly due to food being prepared on demand, which is understandable. South Indian meals was really good
C. L.
This is not a restaurant you come to for the ambiance, I urge you to overlook the tired decor and come here for the food which is fresh, aromatic, plentiful, authentic and delicious. A real gem of authentic south Indian food. Miss it at your peril!
C. H.
I came in expecting your average Indian restaurant and this is far from that.
The food is exceptional and the closest I’ve found to the authentic southern Indian cuisine including masala dosai which has taken me a while to find. Many thanks to they guys and I’ll be back for more 100%
A. C.
Food was delicious but you can't expect a lot from side dishes
F. B.
I have been here quite a few times now both for takeaway and eat in. I guess it’s a hard one to rate out of five haha. On one hand the food is impeccable. Extremely authentic, very reasonably priced, very generously portioned. I’ve not had anything that doesn’t taste great (but very spicy be warned, even the “milder” dishes probably aren’t for someone who dislikes spice). It is certainly one of the very best in Cardiff IMO.
On the other hand the service is extremely hit and miss. At this point we have just accepted that the wait for food to arrive will be around an hour to eat in and possibly multiple hours for takeaway (they only do collection and you can expect to wait at the desk for quite a while). They’re also so busy that it usually takes quite a few attempts to get them to even pick up the phone for takeaway. The decor in the restaurant is a very casual cafe vibe, I wouldn’t take anyone here for a fancy date but Its good for a group of friends :)
In short, me and my friends are constantly coming back because the food is so good but I would reccomended being prepared for slow and sometimes confusing service before you get to said amazing food haha xx
K. M.
Nice South Indian food.
Very pleasant service with authentic South Indian touch.
If you want to try real Indian food, visit here.
s.
One of the best South 🇮🇳 food in whole United Kingdom
S. R.
I am from Malaysia and we have some of the most authentic and tasty curries. We were blown away by the curry here at Ponnuswamy. I am extremely particular about my curries and by far one of the best chicken curry I have had even comparing India and Malaysia. The owner is extremely nice and friendly man and made me a special dish without nuts due to my allergies.
P. M.
They have tried creating South Indian delicacies in Cardiff. Close to authentic taste but the ambience could be a down for some. Cheap prices. Efficient staff. Especially Anna.
A. V.
This place is incredible! I haven’t had Tamil food anywhere near this good since I lived in Chennai. Everything is fresh and delicious and perfectly authentic.
S. B.
We had a really exceptional Indian meal. Everything was delicious. Such rich and varied flavours!
R. S.
I highly recommend this place. Food is quite cheap yet very tasty. I'd visit this place again definitely if I'm in Cardiff.
S. D.
Very good coffee very beautiful taste
P. J.
Best south Indian food.
R. K.
Best place for South Indian style biryani in Cardiff
R. C.
It is a bit rush at the evening of a weekday and other occasions. It took them 25-30 minutes but it is worth going there because the food taste amazing and served freshly. Prices are very responsible. Tables are sometimes clean. They served everything hot. It is up to satisfaction. Friendly staff. They served normal water. I will recommend this place to people who want to try out or enjoy south Indian foods.
K. P.
We had a great time and it was a very satisfying meal, thank you for having us. Finally, We loved the chicken 🐓 biryani dinner.
S. G.
Very tasty dosas. These guys are South Indian cuisine specialists so don't expect North Indian food here. And also the dude that runs the front of house pretty much runs the whole show and so give him a bit of leeway as he can get run off his feet sometimes. Great family feel to this place and it is very reasonably priced. You will be amazed at his multi tasking! Definitely be back!
B. B. R.
It feels like tamilnadu local restaurant in Cardiff , food tastes good but not excellent although to find Indian food especially with South style I think its worth to eat there .
M. C.
I've been eating at this restaurant since I first came to Cardiff in 2015, and I have never been disappointed. The food has a home-like quality, which reminds me of my step-indian grandmother's cooking. It is also South Indian food, so the menu features a lot of delicious goodies which other Indian restaurants don't have.
On top of all that, the service is great, so what else could you ask for in a restaurant?
Just, as a heads up, this place is CASH ONLY, so don't get caught out. However, there is a cash machine outside in case you do.
C. P.
The most authentic south indian food I've had in UK. The only south indian in Cardiff. It's truly spicy, but BRITISH spicy but indian spicy. The shop is quaint and wholesome. The chef I met is from Chennai and a very nice man. The portions are generous too. I really loved their prawn chettinadu and aubergine curry. Their parotta and papodoms are BIG too!! Absolutely delicious will be back soon
E. E.
Truly the best South Indian food in all of Cardiff. Excellent service and kind staff. Highly recommend the Masala Dosa and Biriyani!
D. k.
Truly authentic South Indian Tamil restaurant.
Awesome...Chef would take you back to karaikudi memories . One extra reason I would come back to Cardiff...
Foodies travelling to Cardiff don’t miss this restaurant .
Reasonably priced . Portion size is good.Down to earth gentleman.
A. M.
Wow, beautiful food. The guy is from Chennai and knows his stuff. Very authentic and super friendly to us. Having recently returned from India the dosa's here were super close to those I had in India. Tested a fair few places In UK, mostly disappointing copies of Indian food. You can't fault this place. I will be back.
I. S.
Extremely tasty food - has the deliciousness of home-cooked food made with love and care. The spices are in perfect balance and the lamb is so tender. I'm a regular and have been frequenting for 5 years, never a disappointment, always perfect flavourful food! I've brought all my friends here and they've all loved it too. It's suited well to all palates. I highly recommend their mutton rolls, chicken 65, lamb kothu and masala dosa!
n. p.
If you are a south Indian cuisine lover than it's the best place to go. It was so good to have a authentic (spicy and tasty) food away from home. The service was quick, prices reasonable and staff was friendly. The chef himself came out and asked if we were happy with the good. Would definitely recommend this place.
S. C.
Delicious southern Indian cuisine - warm spicing, earthy curry leaf, tamarind and coconut abound. Corking licence. Lovely helpful service. Plenty of vegan and veggie choices. Fish dishes are outstanding. Very reasonably priced for the quality of the food. Wholeheartedly recommend.
S. T.
The food there is really nice! I love their dosa and chicken briyani. They also do student discounts on weekdays which is nice. It does get extremely busy on some evenings and weekends though. When we went, we pretty much cleaned the table ourselves so we could have a seat. We have been there a few times and they always seem to be understaffed. The chef is actually the one coming out and waiting the tables. The food is always really slow, even when it's quiet but maybe because they are cooking each dish from scratch. But the main reason why this review is missing 2 stars is because of the price. The portions are definitely on the smaller side and the price is way too high. £3 for one single parotta (small to medium size) and £2.50 for a small bowl of boiled rice (comes in those small metal bowls). I wouldn't recommend going to this place if you are really really hunger because it will be a long wait and your bill will be like £30 per person before you know it. But if you are in the mood for a light bite and some tasty food, definitely give it a try.
T. Y.
Great Indian restaurant I've ever visited in the UK. I usually order weekend's special set, which includes a varieties of curry with rice and desserts and they tastes wonderful. Highly recommended for everyone.
o. m.
I have had mostly south Indian food from here and the veg options are very good. Almost at par with what we get back in India. The fish masala is also very good and so the parotta.
Didn't like the biriyani though.
J. N.
Excellent and authentic South Indian food for all with friendly staff, reasonable prices.
D. B.
Second time and I just can't think why haven't come back sooner. Exceptional authentic Southerm Indian food, BYO, lovely people, friendly atmosphere all tables full. 2 people 3 courses £27 love it. Third time, still love it, this place just keeps on giving and the service is just gorgeous.
L. R.
We are so glad to find this little goldmine. Friendly restaurant, great food and Dosai to die for. Don't be put off by the basic looks, the menu is amazing. We'll be back.
K.
Tasty authentic South Indian food! The gentleman who served us was super nice and polite, would definitely return.
E. M.
You won't find any better Indian food at this price point in Cardiff. Really delicious and plenty of vegetarian options. Stay away from their curries and opt for a dosa.
R. a.
I love that place. It has the best prawns fry and boiled rice but I was really surprised when they got us the best kulfi (pistachio and Malai) in Cardiff. It is a must visit place if you want to have an authentic South Indian food, nothing beats it.
M. T.
The best Indian restaurant I've been to. The menu is interesting and very reasonably priced and the staff are really friendly. Bring your own as well. Will definitely be visiting again.
R. R.
What a find in Wales for Indian cuisine. We stopped by on our way to South wales after searching in google for some Indian restaurants and zeroed on this on and didn't regret our decision after our Lunch.
Stays true to its name, servers south Indian(more of Tamil style) food and tastes authentic.
Set meals and south indian tiffins were very tasty.
Reasonably priced restaurant and parking can be difficult as it is located on busy main road.
T. W.
Incredible place! Such authentic food and lovely staff. We have all eaten Indian food for so long in so many places (including India!) and this was just so perfect!
I. P.
A nice south Indian restaurant, if you are fond of south Indian food, this is the best place in Cardiff. The staff are usually very good. In recent times I see a lot of local English people turning up to this restaurant than Indians or Asians.
j. S.
Authentic South Indian food as it is served in South India. Loved Masala dosa with coconut chutney.
S. R. W.
Nice food, reasonable cost..
F. X.
Real delicacies although the ambience was lacking due yo the small nature. However if what you looking for is quality goods you're going to the right place. Lovely traditional southern Indian dishes. Decent variety as well. Recommended mango lassi and parota and lamb curry. For a starter try chilly chicken if you want to spice it up.
G. A.
Good restaurant to have south Indian cuisines
D. S.
Took the whole family here. Delicious, homecooked South Indian food. You can't get food like this anywhere else in Wales. Family run, daughter front of house, father in the kitchen. Lovely food.
V. K.
Authentic south indian flavour, food was great and the owner (who also took our order) was courteous.
K. K.
I've been to this restaurant for the first time. The menu is really good which I felt it was more like Madurai restaurant. I've been to many other south indianIndian resta in UK, but this one is really good. The restaurant owner was really kind and helpful. I strongly suggest to all South Indian dish lovers. Kothu parotta is awesome.
G. R.
Best chutney sambar dosa idly vada- The closest I have had so far being in the UK. Amazing host, super friendly. First time in Cardiff and stumbled upon this fantastic restaurant. I am from Chennai and this is on par with Indian taste. Dont miss it if you are in Cardiff. This is the on the way to Roath Park.
d. d.
Owner has an attitude problem. Food is good.
D. D.
Food was OK. As there are not many options available for South Indian food, so I would say its good but in terms of taste, one cannot expect anything great in UK when matching taste of food cooked in India.
S. R.
Authentic food. The senior waiter,(now I realize he is the owner, how often do you see that level of passion) is a Superman, always smiling, helpful and looking after a restaurant full of clients almost by himself.
M. C.
Taste is purely South Indian as it resembles the name. The service needs to be improved as there are not many probably one one or two to serve even on busy days. Taste is fabulous needs improvement in service.
W. R.
best curry in cardiff! great price for lovely flavours and BYOD! definitely get the kulfi ice for dessert
H. R. (.
Best food and wonderful chef. If you want best food then it's better to visit this restaurant. It's exactly 100% pakka south indian food. Mr.Chef is very friendly and he made best chicken biryani (Hot and spice). It looks like family run business and cosy restaurant.
N. R.
Excellent South Indian food! Dosa and biryani were exactly as how we would get in India. Idlis were very soft. One of the places we would visit again the next time we are in Cardiff.
s. s.
The real flavor of Indian food is the best thing about this restaurant. The ambience here is not that good and the service is also poor
Totally recommended for good food but not recommended if just want to have good time
B. M.
Kothu Porotta and cauliflower or Paneer Manchurian is a standard order - can't go wrong if you want something different to your standard curry house fare.
I. H.

S. k. R.

It's was ok. I ordered chicken 65 which was more like dry chicken nuggets... plain dosa with sambar and 3 chutneys were fine. Overall it's a ok restaurant. Not very special South Indian u get here

Good south Indian food... Polite staff. I am myself from South India and food tasted delicious. Some of the other negative reviews particularly about people's appearance is unfair and rude
