Reviews of Ranfields Brasserie

Ate here for lunch today. The food was extremely good and the waiter was friendly and welcoming. The fish and Ox cheek were delicious! A great lunch.

Absolutely fantastic meal. The beef fillet melted in the mouth and was delicious. The Eton Mess was divine and expertly presented. Wonderful service and special message to celebrate our anniversary. Will be back soon.

Enjoyed a lovely Christmas meal here. The food was delicious with great attention to flavours and textures. Courses were not too big including the little Christmas puddings..not too sweet.
Service was excellent and timed so that there were pauses to appreciate the food.
Very nice friendly atmosphere.
Highly recommended.

They showed us what Christmas spirit is! We are in the UK on a short visit, we gathered in a house by their restaurant to only realise our oven doesn't work, meaning the family Christmas Dinner is soon to be ruined. We know how busy the festive season is for hospitality businesses. Yet, they could accommodate a large family on very short notice, with the finest food possible. Very friendly staff and perfect food quality; one of the finest Christmas dinners I had in my life. Together with the home owners, they definitely showed us the Christmas spirit throughout. Thanks to them, our long-awaited large family Christmas gathering was unforgettable! 100% recommended, and we'll definitely come back for a visit.

Very enjoyable evening, tasty food and very lovely staff. The Veggie set menu is amazing value. Loved the pea tofu starter and the whiskey ice-cream on the waffle on the dessert.

Had a very lovely meal here. The menu has a wide range of choice with a vegetarian menu too. Food was tasty, staff friendly, decor good.
Revisited last night and the food was even better! The vegetarian menu is the best I've seen anywhere and probably too much choice if you're like me and can't make a decision! But we've said we'd go back for lunch to have the other options! They do a very reasonable fixed price menu available evenings and lunch which is worth checking out. The decor and ambiance is good and for a Thursday night most of the tables were full! We used a travel zoo voucher when we went but to be honest the fixed price menu looked just as good. Parking either right outside on the street or there's a village car park behind the houses opposite which is free.

Found this place thanks to our Gourmet society card. Had a great evening celebrating our anniversary here. The atmosphere and surroundings are lovely with wall to wall artwork. Attentive staff serve the very well presented, extremely tasty food. We will be back for more.

Been here a few times food always top notch and friendly staff, you only get this kind of atmosphere from a small town venue , recommended!

Had a brilliant meal here on a Saturday night. Really tasty starters. We had lamb and veal for main. The Lamb was fantastic and the veal was nice but a little over cooked and tough. Really enjoyed the bread and butter pudding desert. One of the best I’ve had. Staff were really attentive and friendly.

Birthday lunchtime treat. A lot of money for very little. Would have got equally good food at a a gastro pub for considerably less money. Would not return: overrated.

Fantastic lunch with Ranfield’s set menu. Beautiful location for a catch-up with friends. Delicious food and great service. We’ll be back.

Lived ip to its reputation. Will definitely be back

My wife decided to take me our for a suprise dinner and had not been for a few years. Food quality good and portion side great but rather expensive compared with comparable restaurants in north essex. Service slow to start - 30mins before ordering but better afterwards apart from a long pause between mains and the sides appearing - Also did not explain that sides were large enough for a couple so over ordered. Drinks menu also very limited - no mocktails for no drinkers etc...
Sorry - will not be going back again.

What a little discovery, menu, cooking, setting, atmosphere and to so importantly, the staff, professional, friendly happy to help, happy in their work and its so telling. Whoever is running and training them needs a huge compliment, so many restaurants miss this mark, even if the rest are great.
Made for a great birthday meal, thank you all, we will definitely be back.

5 stars ⭐️
Excellent food, excellent Service !
We have been coming here for years and have told many people that it is the best restaurant in Essex. Finally it’s getting through. Thank you Sarah for your hospitality, a friend coming to this for what would of been his late wife pat’s 75th birthday. As usual you made home and his family feel extra special and I thank you dearly for that. You are all so lovely and the food is by far the best in Essex.

Good food although one of our party did find a hair in her food. Once we got the waitresses attention (it took a few minutes) she quickly organised a fresh dish to be brought out.
Our waitress knew the menu and wine list inside out and was very helpful.
Would have been five stars without the hair.
We paid around £70 per head for three courses, lovely breads and a good number of drinks, we didn't overly splash out on wine though.
I would have no issue recommending and will be back.

We came for Sunday lunch and it was fabulous!! The quality of the food was superb, the chef is a culinary genius and the staff were attentive, thoughtful and made the experience a delight.
The venue is quirky and warm and inviting but the food is the real wonder!
Would head back in a heartbeat. Superb afternoon!

Absolutely stunning food.
We booked a meal for 7 of us including 3 fussy Little eaters and left clean plates all round.
The staff couldn't do anymore if they tried!

We live locally and have been many times over the last decade and we've never been disappointed by Ranfields or it's predecessor Baumanns. Everywhere else we've gone regularly has had an off day occasionally, but not here. Yes, perhaps a few percent more pricey than a gastro pub, but worth it every time to eat in a restaurant with great service, creative menus and decent portions too. Highly recommended.
K. P.
Never fails to impress.
A. C.
Exceptional food really delicious, chips best I have ever tasted, and so obliging I changed the fish from cod to plaice cannot speak highly enough.
Can’t wait to go back.
A. B.
Just exceptional. We keep trying other restaurants in Essex, but honestly nothing compares to Ranfield's.
If you want to treat yourself to a lovely meal out you really can't go wrong.

Myself and my family have been coming to this restaurant for near on 20-years. We're happy to see that John boy has extended the menu but still kept the flavour of old. Absolutely love the slightly eclectic setting. Food is always top-notch and the portion sizes ample. I look forward to attending the restaurant for another 20-years.

Perfect evening for a celebration meal. The food was tasteful in presentation and flavour. Wonderful all round experience
J. M.
It's an amazing place really lovely setting. The staff were attentive but not too much. Food fantastic lovely to have tablecloths pure white wonderful. If I lived a lot nearer I would visit once a month. It's a long way from Yorkshire! !!!
M. W.
Good Sunday lunch super table linen and cutlery, very pleasent staff

10/10. A++++, I don't really need to say anything else. 3rd time here. Blown away every time. Food is exquisite. Service superb. I'm afraid I didn't get any photos. Too busy diving into Thai prawn starter (I'm afraid my descriptive powers are sadly lacking at how good this was) with whitebait and squid. Then a divine baked salmon. Cooked perfectly. Crisp skin. Moist inside. Perfect. And finally a blackberry parfait accompanied by some delightful additions. Honeycomb, a sorbet so delicate as to be fey. And a double espresso to seal the deal. Recommended. Put this on your bucket list.
A. F.
Excellent food in an excellent setting with lots of nice touches.
L. T.
Lovely decor, situated in an historic village. Nicely laid tables and a wide choice of food. We had the set three courses menu £17.95 at lunchtime. All dishes nicely presented and tasty. Would go again.
B. H.
Lovely birthday lunch the food was excellent and the young lad that waited on us was brilliant would definitely recommend a visit
N. J.
Loved the eclectic paintings and book shelves shabby chic done very well. Front of house staff were excellent and had everything timed to perfection. Then there was the food! Wow I don't have enough superlatives to discrib! Highly recommended one of the best meals I have had full stop!
v. c.
Beautiful quirky 'art gallery' interior, interesting toilet decoration. Staff knowledgeable, informative and attentive, menus extensive and food tastes exquisite and is beautifully presented. An upmarket restaurant giving an overall wonderful dining experience.
R. L.
Absolutely delicious food. Good gluten free menu. Ranfields did their best to accommodate us despite me having to change the time of the booking at the last minute. Decor/environment is a little dated. Would highly recommend for superb food.
I.
Fabulous, creative meal, beautifully presented by great staff. I cant recommend Ranfields highly enough if you are within travelling distance.
G. W.
Good food, lovely staff. Starters and mains were all great, nicely cooked. Cheeseboard was poor, with a pretentious touch of ordering early to allow the cheese to come to room temperature, which left it dry and sweaty.
d. l.
Pleasantly surprised how good it was.First class service.Very good food.
What more do you want.

Just had the Christmas menu and all four courses were excellent. And the extra touches, mini salmon "icecream" cones on arrival and a little cube of fudge with coffee and mince pies was an unexpected extra treat. The staff were welcoming and the waiting times between courses was just right, despite it being quite busy with a few Christmas parties taking place. We would definately recommend it for a special occasion, although the menu du jour looked really nice too!
S. H.
Had a meal here a couple of Saturdays ago for our Wedding Anniversary, you could not fault anything from start to finish, the food was amazing and the staff were very friendly and professional, we will definitely be going back again...

M. E.
A nice little place - lacks some atmosphere in the restaurant though. Food is good, no doubt about it, but then that's what you are paying for.
M.
Fantastic food with real prowess. Menu had a lot of choice and service was excellent and friendly.
R. W.
Very nice food And certainly better value with the taste card. Nice atmosphere but both occasions I have been the service is very slow
T. C.
One of the best restaurants in the region. Great service, great food. Well priced. London quality at 2/3rds the cost.
J. S.
Baumanns used to be highly theatrical with well executed food. Not anymore. All three dishes were tired, wishy-washy and Meh-able. The ox cheek was completely unseasoned.
Sorry guys but you need to up your game.....
H.
Expensive but very good delicious food.
A. R.
Absolutely delicious food, fantastic, friendly service from experienced and well trained staff, wonderful atmosphere
S. S.

I wish I'd known before I ordered the bacon, scollps lollipop, it was spicy and I had to swop my starter with a friend as I can't take spicy food as it affects my asthma.
T. y.
Amazing food, the consistency is always there. Would highly recommend it to any traveler and locals.
A. D.
Ranfields is nice and dependable, the fish is always fresh and well prepared.
C. S.
It's hard to believe that nearly 30 Years have elapsed since the demise of the great Peter Langan. Yet his spirit still lives on here, and I am not just talking about the many paintings. Post Langan it was successfully nurtured by Mark Baumann, which then 3 Years ago gave way to Ranfields. No major changes have occurred - and neither were they necessary. If it ain't broke, then don't fix it, as Peter Langan himself would probably have observed
T. B.
Stylish, well cooked food at reasonable prices with great service and fantstic atmosphere. Recommended.
