Visited for a family meal for a 60th Birthday celebration. Food was lovely and the staff were friendly. Good atmosphere. I felt drink prices at the bar were VERY expensive but I guess this is unavoidable nowadays as it's how most businesses make their profit. Therefore, I've not taken a star off for that.

Lovely restaurant with great food. Went for my birthday meal. It has a great traditional Inn restaurant feel. The building is historic too. It still has the bullet holes in the wooden beamed exterior from the 17th century English civil war and the seige of Colchester. We sat by the window and the sun streamed in as we ate.

This place is full of character a 17th century half timbered french style building proudly displaying the original musket shots from the era. But more importantly the food doesn’t let the surroundings down. Offering European food with a modern English twist. Pan Fried Scallops with Pea Purée and Black Pudding Bon Bons. .A generous portion of scallops cooked to perfection sweet and tasty, but I have to say the idea of the black pudding bon bons was genius little balls of rich flavours balanced the pea purée and scallops beautifully. Pan Fried Sea Trout Fillet, Curried Mussel Velouté with New Potatoes and Samphire. Great looking fish, trout was full of smooth flavour and the curried mussels were awesome the sauce was to die for and with the sharp salty taste of the samphire was a great match. Apple and Cinnamon Crumble Tart with Vanilla Ice Cream. What can I say does what it says on the tin, loved the crispy pastry shell and the crumble was sweet and well, crumbly, to be honest and this is my fault I was expecting it to be warm like a crumble rather than cold, but it is a crumble tart so i guess a tart is cold. But a great way to end the meal. . Well that and the cracking espresso martini that replaced your standard filter coffee. . Whilst the food was great I have to also comment on the excellent staff for making us feel so welcome in the current times, it’s hard to be a great host with so many rules but they pulled it off brilliantly. We will certainly be back.

Lovely place to eat in this historic building. The food is always very good and delicious. Staff are friendly. My only negative is the parking as they only have a small carpark for the size of the building and there is almost no other parking near by.

A 3 course meal for just over £30 including drink I felt was excellent value for money given that I had what was without doubt the best roast dinner I have ever bought. Great staff altogether. Respectfull waitres and managers ready to pass on usefull information.The owner is a knoledgeable hardworking chef who used to teach cookery at the institute. He takes good care of the restaurant elaborating diffrent menus thoughout the year and cooking with fresh seasonal ingredients. The food here is real fresh and is served in a superb, rustic ambient.

Beautiful setting in this ancient building. Very friendly knowledgeable, polite staff ; only 2 waiting on tables so I'm unsure if that was the reason it was quite delayed in serving each course on the 15th February. (The was a large family eating there too , so that didn't help I'm sure but at least it says they can cater for larger groups.). Our meals were absolutely delicious! Great choice for vegetarians ; unusual options from the run of the mill choices I normally am offered. My husband had seafood starter & pork for main which he said was very very good. I think he would have liked a little more ! But really ,after a short while we were full up so don't be fooled & let it go down is my advice ! Fantastic selection of gins. Overall competitively priced meal. I only dropped a star because we had no parking spaces & it was heavily raining that day and I had had my hair done ! Flimsy reason perhaps but with the parking issue & a 25 minute wait from Starter to main meal I have been a bit mean & knocked off a star for this occasion. But I genuinely look forward to coming again & highly recommend The Old Siege House to everyone.

Booked this venue for dinner for my Mums 60th. We had a party of 21 adults and 8 children. In the build up to the night Darren and Nadine were great, really helpful over email and really easy to deal with when booking something for so many people. On the night, the venue was perfect, had our own area upstairs which was great for the kids. The food was brilliant, amazing value for money. The staff were all great too. This venue is perfect for anyone looking to book a large group, especially with children. Everything about our evening was great.

Had a lovely family celebratory meal here. It is a bit more on the pricey side if choosing from the standard menu, but the food is excellent and the staff are friendly and helpful. There were some other offers for Thursday nights which looked good value as they included a pint and a main meal for £10. Only issue we had was parking. Our group of 10 arrived in 3 vehicles on a Thursday night. We were only able to park 1 vehicle in the car park as it was full, but we managed to find some parking about 5mins walk away. The Oreo cheesecake was enormous, so I was glad I shared it with my youngest. We will definitely be visiting again.

Very dissapointed with lunch last Sunday , ordered the roast beef, and when it came no Yorkshire pudding so I had to ask for it, the waitress seemed surprised as if I shouldn't have asked but it was stated on the menu Then I had to ask for a sharp knife as couldn't cut the beef. After several attempts to cut the meat with a sharper knife it was still difficult so I gave up. Also the menu stated vegetables which actually was 2 parsnips and half a dozen green beans !!!!!

Visited for a family meal out - great food served in a pleasant environment with attentive waiting staff. The building itself has a lot of history having played it's part in the siege of Colchester during the English Civil War from which it still bears the scars in the form of musket ball holes in the timbers outside.

Cosy bar for pre dinner drinks with a large selection of drinks and cocktail to choose from. Was asked if we would like some peanuts with the drinks, typically free at a bar - here appeared as a 2.50 charge on my bill. A varied and interesting menu, for our mains we ordered steak and chips. Reason for a four, rather than a five star rating, is that it was served just like that....steak with a pile of chips with non of the accompaniments that are typically served with steak and chips such as vine tomatoes, watercress, grilled mushroom etc. End result was that the plates looked very stark when placed in front of us. Despite its appearance - was still a very good steak and chips - but really would have benefited from some small extra sides to make the meal a littlel less monotonous and look much more appealing. Maybe sides were available as an extra - but being priced at £20, it probably should have included something without looking to then charge extra.
