Reviews of Bells

The best fish and chips we have had on our UK trip. The upstairs dining was clean and neat, with a great view of the street out the window. Fish was crispy and tasty. I would definitely eat here again!
M. L.
We called in whilst waiting for our appointment at the passport office and I'm so glad we did !
The restaurant is on two floors ( there's also a takeaway) the style is modern industrial, it is super clean , staff are really nice and the cherry on top is the fish & chips as they were absolutely delicious and my wife actually said "these could be the best I've ever had" and I tend to agree as the fish was cooked to perfection in a golden crisp batter, chips were also very good and accompanied with bread & butter and tea ( quality tea bag used and you can tell )
So overall a great lunch and no hesitation in recommending. 10/10

Went for a lovely day out to Durham from Doncaster. Had lunch at Bells Fish and Chip restaurant Market Place. Absolutely beautiful great food great price very friendly staff in particular Clare. Would certainly recommend trying if you are in Durham. Keep up the good work.
W. P.
Very good fish&chips in Durham. Best accompanied with local beer. Excellent service. They have few locations in the city including take-aways spots. Recommend!
M. K.
Here is the best fish and chips restaurant in the centre of Durham. Many of the residents who live nearby seem regularly visit here. So when the during the university term and weekdays usually many people visit here. I saw that there has a takeout service.
I got my fish and chips very quickly, and it was well fried. One of the best fish was Cod. I ordered just a small size of Cod, but it was still huge!
If you have your meal here, it would be very full and satisfying.
Maybe I will visit here more regularly

I was staying away in Durham for work and really fancied fish and chips after a long day on site. I did a quick search and Bells with a 4.5 / 5 rating was close by.
After a short walk I was pleasantly surprised to see that it was a sit down restaurant (there is a take away next door). The service was spot on, quick and attentive. I had battered sausage and chips, with some buttered bread to make a chip butty.
Highly recommended.
D. B.
My first time visiting Bells and I absolutely loved it! The fish and chips were so delicious and the service was great. The staff were so friendly and the fish was so fresh.
S. G. &. M.
Great service. Top notch fish n chips. Gluten free batter is perfect.
Very friendly service.
K. K.
Had the best fish meal ever 😋
Not a big eater of chips, so I opted for the salad was (for me , is perfect 👌)
Hubby and daughter had the usual fish and chips ( and ofcourse their ever fave, curry sauce ).
K. L.
The best fish & chips, amazing staff and you don’t wait long for food.
J. P.
I have been working away for a few weeks and trying to sample some local eats with high reviews on Google. After a few evenings of slightly more eastern dishes I wanted something a bit more comforting. I found Bells and was extremely pleased to have done as soon as I entered. The staff were all smiling on a brisk Wednesday evening and very polite, friendly and welcoming. The food was great as was service.
M. G.
Called by on a warm sunny August evening after a good walk around the city. Short wait for the fish to fry but worth it. Chips were good quality, crisp and golden and the fish delicious. Just under a tenner for a decent size portion. Would call by again.
J. R.
Nice fish and chip restaurant, lovely big portions, and nice hot pot of tea.
Staff were friendly, but I would suggest not offering to present people with their bill before it's requested.
It may give the impression that you want customers to vacate their table before their ready.
M. T.
Bells is a really welcoming and friendly fish and chips shop. Gluten free fish and chips is available, cooked in a separate frier from the "normal" food. They take pride in their customer service. Highly recommend!
D. K.
Deliciously tasty grub.
Brilliantly sized portion.
Great service.
Good price.
What more could you possibly want?
M. D.
Always a great service and food served here
D. K.
We were walking past Bells and thought we’d give it a try on the eat out scheme. Excellent restaurant! Greeted at the door by a friendly face wearing a visor, hand gel applied, Social distancing within the restaurant good. Food was also amazing and at a fair price for the location. Totally recommend.
j.
Absolutely bang on average, 3 stars because £13.50 for cod and chips and a cup of tea is.. Actually it wouldn't be that bad, but the size of fish was small they are getting 3 portions out of one fillet. Also chips where like scraps
A. B.
Really good chips, prices are slightly higher than other chip shops but this one is far better than most and so the price is justified.
H. Q.
I totally agree with what its ad says, “proper fish & chips”. Cod is always fresh and properly seasoned. Chips are impressively delicious. The price is reasonable. I always order a take-away so not quite sure about the dining environment, but from the window I guess it’s cozy. Anyway, I recommend it.
A. S.
Tasty fish and chips on the go. Nice portion sizes and decent price too (cod and fish £7.20 if you take away). If you are a fish and chips lover then you can't miss this place. Their staffs are friendly and helpful too. I recommend Bells 👍 Thank you.
D. C.
Really friendly and helpful staff that accommodated our 7 persons group. All the fish and chips we ordered were fresh and superbly cooked. The chips are some of the best I've had! They say the secret is beef drippings 😉 The batter is very light and not greasy which is fantastic, nowadays very few chip shops have this quality.
They have a takeaway that's just as busy next door if you prefer to eat whilst you explore.
G. X. L.
Amazing fish and chips. It was recommended by a local and we were definitely not disappointed. Ordered haddock, pretty much the same as cod but with the fish skin. Soooooo good! Their fries are really tasty as well. I feel like this is the best fish and chips I have had in UK so far :P
J. K.
Lovely fish chips but the young server upstairs although trying his best was needing a bit more help
Φ. Β.
Excellent place to have a meal. Reasonably priced, huge portions and probably the best fish and chip we have ever tasted. Kind stuff, excellent service, suitable for families. On the corner to the castle!
T. T.
Best fish and chips in this area. If u r lucky bag the sitting overlooking the town area and watch the Durham way of life while tucking into those gorgeous morsels, The service did take, but it was worth the wait.
M. C.
Chips where lovely, but found 2 stands of hair in the fish. Don't have any clear information if something is vegetarian
S. S.
Wow what amazing customer service. I had the cod and chips and it was incredible as always. Lovely environment. I will be back
S. J.
We visited here over the Jubilee weekend and were so impressed by the food and the amazing staff.
After trying to get to Beamish but spending the day fixing a blown out tyre instead (!!) we took refuge in Bells, which quite honestly felt like a little oasis of calm from the busy high street.
All of the staff were amazing and friendly, they catered for my gluten intolerance, and the fish and chips were the best we've ever had.
My particular thanks goes to the lady with the dark hair (ponytail) who really looked after me, whilst I didn't mention anything at the time, I'm autistic and had been really struggling with sensory overload. It was as if she sensed it and her kind energy and gentle manner really put me back on my feet again.
Can't recommend this place highly enough, a must for people who love PROPER fish and chips!!!! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐🙏🤗
C. T.
Lovely food and friendly staff. Good coeliac-safe gluten free options!
C. H.
Good quality fried haddock
o.
Pan fried salmon with fries. Crispy outside but soft inside. Great seafood and good service.
I. P.
Best fish and chips in the area. The fish is always well battered, not too thick and not overly greasy. Chips are a delight as they're crispy and fresh. The eat in dining space is very pleasant and comfortable especially upstairs. Take out always good and if the weather permits great to eat in the town square or by the river.
J.
Food was excellent and the service too. Also had lots of gluten and dairy free options.
E. Y.
This is my third visit, haddock, chips, mushy peas bread and butter and a pot of tea. I am never disappointed, everything tasted delicious and cooked to perfection. Only one complaint, I did not make room for the gooseberry crumble and custard, too full!!!
G. H.
Excellent food. Best fish and chips we have had in ages. Very clean restaurant. Staff very good in particular Liam (glasses) - thanks for the banter.
A. F.
Second time here. Amazing quality, value for money and service with a smile.
G. A.
Top fish and chips , friendly staff, excellent food
E.
Very nice fish and chip shop, excellent fish and chips, and nice and hot, the batter on the fish was just a bit too greasy, but on the whole a great meal
T. V.
Better than average fish and chip restaurant. We had lunch and got a great table upstairs overlooking the square. Good portions and reasonably priced.
L. V.
Great food, lovely staff. Would definitely recommend it.
A. H.
Yummy and fresh fish and chip... I tried cod.. it was excellent
G. K.
Amazing food today and fantastic customer service, restaurant was very clean and staff were constantly cleaning. All staff made an effort to engage with my young daughter as they passed and were accommodating, helpful and understanding of the mess she made. She showed an interest in the fish and they said if she ate her dinner up they would feed the fish for her to see, this made her day
Thank you!!
W. T. l.
A great experience...reasonably priced, super friendly staff.. excellent location...Cod and salad was amazing....will definitely return...Thank you...
B. K.
Lovely food fantastic service fish to die for
C. L.
Great fish&chips, really big portions on the cod
L.
Staff very friendly. All food tastes and smells fresh as always unlike many other fish and chip shops and the flavour of the batter is very good. The batter is crispy and never soaked in grease so is pleasant to eat. My got to place for fish and chips.
T. u. K. o. t. w.
Fantastic service and great food always great to come here. Kids especially love it.
E. R.
Really friendly and peaceful place! Food was a really good quality :)
M. G.
The foid was absolutely delicious great service as they were very helpful towards us as a group for visually impaired and blind people
Highly recommended
G. A.
Best steak pie mush peas and gravy ever
K. T.
Great Saturday lunch. Pricy but good. friendly staff, entrance should be clear people allowed to queue in entrance. Not covid friendly when people leaving have to squeeze by to get out.
S. R.
This is the best fish and chips I have ever had. I say this as a fish and chips lover, I've honestly never had better. Locally sourced fish, potatoes and beef drippings. I've sent at least 5 different international students and their visiting families here when they've approached me to ask the whereabouts of good fish and chips in an attractive town in the North East.
S.
Best fish abd chips of my life!
D. W.
Recently found out that Bells Market place Durham does fantastic, gluten free, fish and chips. Being a Coeliac I am over the moon that the proprietor has offered this option as very few do. Couldn't tell you when I last had f&c, s but I I will be back again for more.
12/02/22
Went into Bells in Durham yesterday and called into the restaurant. As usual the g. f. Fish and chips were of the highest quality. I Reiterate that this is probably the best value restaurant in Durham.
P. H.
Never had a bad meal here an always good and friendly service.
k.
Lovely fish and chips along with great bread and butter. The only fault was the mushy peas were like liquid.
J. P.
Cracking fish and chips after a long day in Durham. Well worth waiting for.
T. S.
We didn't have long to wait in the queue outside Bells. Track and trace protocol was in evidence.
Very reassuring and a nod to the efforts Bells are taking to keep us all safe.
The fish and chips were as tasty as any I have eaten in the past few weeks. The haddock I'd ordered was fried to perfection. The chips complimented the fish.
The service was attentive, friendly and very efficient.
Eat out to help out, gave us a pleasing discount. All things considered, it was the fish and chips which enticed us to Bells, not the discount. Thank you Bells. We will return on our next visit to Durham.
S. F.
Very clean, very tasty and very friendly place to grab a spot of lunch. The food came fresh and piping hot and we all left with a smile on our faces.
A very delicious eatary at the heart of Durham
J. G.
Restaurant and take away in heart of Durham , really good fresh fried fish, crispy batter cannot fault. Also do selection of other fishy mains tried and tested. Senior portions Mon - Friday. Gluten free fryer for those with coeliac. Staff lovely and helpful children's portions and puddings also. Licensed . Update - haven’t changed my opinion, have eaten take out also excellent.
R. B.
Lovely food nice setting sit upstairs for the best views of the market place
A. 6.
Lovely clean restaurant and staff very polite. Fish & chips freshly cooked and delicious 😋
J. A. S.
Absolutely gorgeous even my gluten free meal
B. S.
I've never written a Google review of food before but today I had a fish & chip butty from Bells that was so good I couldn't resist. Flavours and texture perfect, good value for money, an almost spiritual eating experience. 10/10.
G. R.
Fast and courteous service. Excellent food and plenty of it.
M. H.
Best fish and chips I've had in a long time. Staff pleasant and friendly. Would definitely recommend
I. h.
A popular spot but I was slightly disappointed. We had to wait a while before our order was taken and then had to wait far longer before our food was delivered. The fish was a bit rubbery and I've definitely had better. The chips were ok but nothing special. The tea was one of the best tasting that I've had for a long time. Staff were friendly and pleasant.
C. I.
First time visit today, quite possibly the best fish and chips in the north east!
A. K.
Loved it. Quality food, and as a group we couldn't fault a thing. Only flaw is the choice of dinner alcohol. Card shows a satisfying choice of drinks, but then you find out they're never available at this place. Why on the drinks menu then?
Funny thing: we asked for Guinness which wasn't available, but we were offered an alternative that was ... a lager.
Maybe offer BYOB?
Overall -if you like fish, don't hesitate and just go there.
Decent menu and decent choice for kids.
Recommend.
I. R.
Excellent food and service. Some of the best fish and chips ever
S. K.
Best fish and chips I’ve had. Lovely staff and amazing quality fish
E. M.
Go for fish and chips, and that's what you'll get, but there are a surprising amount of other options. Nice to be able to choose the fish according to preference. Option of vegetable oil for frying the food was new to me. Food was excellent. A lot of beer options on menu were not available but the one that I chose (local IPA) was very good.
m. p.
Absolutely amazing fish and chips! Fantastic proper mushy peas too. Homemade tartar sauce and scraps complete the majesty of this near perfect box of wonder. Service was first rate too. Lovely, polite, and bubbly.
L. P.
Felt like getting fish and chips with the family and a local made the recommendation. Went through to the restaurant and was far more upmarket than expected. Fish and Chips were excellent. I thought that some of our party getting a beef pie would be disappointed - I was wrong - that too was excellent. Excellent food and decent prices. Will definitely visit again and recommend to anyone looking for good value meals!
S. H.
Delicious good, highly recommended!
D. O.
Good fish restaurant in Durham. At the time are it was not too busy so we got a table without any problems. Service was good. Atmosphere was good. Food was very good. Kids also enjoyed the WiFi which elsewhere in the city had been lacking!
E. A. Z. D.
I gave a second chance to fish and chips, as the first time I tried them they were very greasy and poor. This place served very nice portions and well cooked fished and chips, all with a good price (average 10 pounds per person).
J. K.
For the First time i can say i enjoyed fish and chips in england.
T. S.
Both my wife and I declared them the best fish and chips we have tasted for years.
L. N. W.
Best fish and chips I had on any of my UK visits. Fast service. It’s nice to sit and eat on the adjacent square, so be sure to grab some napkins.
They also do gluten free!
M. L.
I cannot say enough how lovely the servers are here, extremely polite and will help with anything you ask. The fish and chips are delicious and the mac and cheese sticks from the starters menu are incredible. 30 for 2 starters, 2 mains and 2 drinks, lovely view from the top floor window table, was a lovely lunch.
P. T.
Pleasant service, tasty food!
C. L.
Just called in for fish & chip tea. We had cod with half salad half chips , bread & tea. Everything about this meal was excellent, the fish was delicious, chips were nice and crispy & the salad was beautifully presented. The bread was nice and fresh and served with lurpak . Even the tea was nice. The service as also spot on and the shop was spotless. Very good value for money .
C. M.
One of the Best if not the Best Fish and Chips in the North East. Excellent. Just fancied Fish and Chips and we decided to sit in the Restaurant side. £11.95 Evening Special. COD and Chips + Side + Slice of Bread+ Dessert. Staff helpful and Service was faultless. Second time we have sat in and no complaints either time.
L. S.
First visited in January, the meal and the dessert was delicious, the staff was friendly and spending over £15 for this meal, it was worth every single penny of it.
T. J. S.
The best fish and chips I've ever had. So good that you won't care that you end up smelling like fish and chips for the rest of the day. Even if you not particular to ordinary fish and chips, you'll like what Bells serve.
J. G.
The service was really good, so I don't want judge the restaurant for just one visit... But I wasn't happy at all. There were only two fihes available in the menu and only one IPA. At 13 all other fishes and draft IPA ran out of stock. The food was good and not expensive but.. A proper fish and ships should include peas!!
k. g.
My partner had the corn beef pattie. U had the side salad. His entree was hot and fresh. The chips were piping hot as well. My salad was nothing short of amazing. Fresh lettuce, tomatoes, radish, strawberries, snow peas, baby corn and more. The wait staff was so friendly and very professional. The food arrived in a timely manner. The restaurant itself was spotless and the restrooms were incredibly clean. I'm only sorry we 5didn't discover this treasure the first day we arrived in Durham. BELLS is a must to visit while in Durham.
G. S.
Took my wife, an American, to England for the first time, and I was constantly disappointed with the quality of the local fish and chip shops. All fish and chips were soggy, nothing like how they should be. I took her here, and it SAVED the experience! Talk about proper fish and chips! Oh and the mushy peas... makes me want to get some more right now. You will not be disappointed by this restaurant!
L. H.
Good fish and chips. Unfortunately it's all fried in beef dripping so isn't suitable for most vegetarians. Interesting fish themed decor with a fish tank providing amusement whilst you wait for your food to be ready.
M. S.
Excellent quality traditional restaurant-cooked fish and chips. They sell bottles of Peroni if memory serves. It's a slight cut above a greasy spoon caff as far as decor goes. Cost-wise ,it's slightly more expensive to eat in and have a sit-down meal than the takeaway I must regularly visit in Sutton Coldfielf but this is the only place I treat myself to a lovely big piece of cod and chips. Well worth a visit.
H. F.
Truely an outstanding fish and chip restaurant. Lovely interior and the best fish I've ever had...
L. C.
Love the fish and chips from here. It's a hit with my kids too. I always find it clean and the staff friendly. It's consistently good and a nice way to treat ourselves.
T. C.
Arrived at 6.25pm. Seated shortly after. Ordered as we sat due to needing to be at the cathedral for 7pm. Served by 6.40. Beautifully cooked haddock and chips. Definitely will return next time we are in town.
G. N.
The best fish and chips with scraps and mushy peas that I have had in 40 years. This place is fantastic
B. K.
Excellent fish and chips served in a very nice plaice.
J. G.
Having regularly eaten in the takeaway (but never the restaurant) I have no complaints. Good food at a good price. Being from the north west I was at first confused that a sausage seems to be battered by default, but I can't complain about the taste (my arteries however, are another matter).
I. F.
The best fish and chips in Durham and they don't cost the earth. Cooked in beef dripping just like the old days. It's right next to the main square so you can sit and watch the world go by with your yummy chips.
P. L.
Whilst in the centre of Durham came across this "chippy." Adjacent they have a small restaurant (they have an upstairs as well, but I didn't explore there). Their portions and prices where fantastic value and they do have 2 course deals as well.
Most important - the fish (in batter) and chips were cooked to perfection. There's something to be said for the Northern way!
R. S.
Really nice meal. Nice atmosphere and good location. The best fish and chips I've seen in the area. It's really nice to see them support local breweries too with the local drinks options.
C. P.
Great chippy restaurant. Go there for lunch every time I go to Durham (from Devon). 87 year old mother likes a trip to see Cuthbert's shrine in the Cathedral and then to Bells!
A. C.
We only moved here last week and need to find somewhere for Friday fish and chips. I believe we have found it,
Staff were friendly and nothing was to much trouble.
Food was very very good, large portion and crispy batter
J. B.
Great fish and chips. Helpful staff
M. M.
Like many people, I have eaten f&s in loads of places, and in my experience nothing beats Bells for quality, quantity and cost. Mr D Cummings would have been far better off going to Durham than for an eye test in Barnard Castle...
P. w.
Lovely fish n chips, staff were very attentive. Me and my granddaughter throughly enjoyed our lunch. The children's menu was good value.
p.
Best fish and chips that I have ever eaten. Have a great meal there then see Durham Cathedral. Well worth the train trip from Newcastle.
P. K.
The food is of excellent quality ! And have a variety of drinks, with a great view of Durham market. Prices are good too! Must add the waitress that served us didn't seemed friendly but she may of been having a bad day....
k. h.
Always good service, and good fish and chips.
K. B.
Great gluten free fish and chips
A. S.
I normally use a takeaway fish and chip shop in Sacriston, near my home. I saw Bells in passing, so I thought I'd give it a try. Big mistake! Haddock, chips and a cheese patty cost me about £2 more than I'd usually pay. The haddock was about half the size, as was the chip portion and the cheese patty wasn't very nice, according to my wife. I don't recommend it at all.
d. p.
The cod, chips and mushy peas are amazing, the best I've had and the staff were fantastic. Thank you
D. E.
Excellent food and service. Wide selection of fish dishes, more than just fish and chips. Some other selections for those who don't like fish. Highly recommended.
B. C.
Fish and chips restaurant in the middle of Durham, England. You would expect it to be a tourist trap, given the location, but it was amazing. It's been almost nine years since I was there, and I can't stop thinking about it.
J. F.
Very good meal excellent service tip top very friendly 👌👍
P. t.
City centre fish and chip shop with social distance markers and friendly customer service.
D. H.
One of the best fish and chip meals I've had. Lovely staff. Social distancing in place.
Q. D.
As has always been expected Bells has lovely food, polite and helpful staff and even with 8 people they were able to serve up all the meals at the same time and put up with the rowdy elements of over excited kids.
Been there many times and plan to go again and try out their new place aswell.
B. M.
Best fish and chip shop/restaurant IN THE WORLD (plus great staff)
M. d.
Definitely overated. Not bad as such but firmly average fish and chips for high price, won't be rushing back.
A. C.
Very friendly staff, excellent fish and chips (one of the best in the UK), large portions and good value. Highly recommend.
C.
This place is excellent, polite and friendly staff, good prices, good selection of drinks and the food is first class! I would recommend the battered salmon, it sounded wrong but turns out it's amazing and should be on every fish & chip shop menu!
R. C.
The best Fish & Chips I've ever had in my life.
s. A.
We visited the shop without having any expectations. But we were amazed by the taste. The prices were reasonable. A real British fish and chips.
B. A.
Amazing chips, brilliant portion. Their batter is to die for too. All of the meal was. Not healthy at all but who expects Fish and Chips to be. A good place for a good, hearty meal.
V.
Best chip shop in Durham. Just one thing men's toilet downstairs in restaurant, door needs a door stopper fitted to floor as you can trap your fingers against wall leaving toilet.
A. W.
Great fish and chips.
R. H.
Had better from local takeaway a bit pricey for what you get
C. W.
Great fish and chips, but plenty of choice on the menu. Quite busy but really good and quick service.
D. B.
Simply fantastic. First class fish & chips, and very generous portions. The Haddock was delicious!
K. E.
Lovely restaurant. Staff, food and atmosphere fabulous. I would recommend a stop here. You won't get better fish and chips in Durham unless you visit.
C. B.
Amazing fish and chips, the best I've had. Good portions and the staff were very polite and helpful.
J. H.
Great fish and chips to eat in and take away. Not the cheapest but worth it, great cod and haddock, lovely batter, big portions. Great service in the restaurant.
J. W.
Lovely and intimate little fish shop restaurant. Friendly staff and good hot food. Fantastic chips obviously!
A. I.
Great fish, chips could be a little better.
S. M.
Very nice but £1.90 for a very small portion ov musshy pease is a bit extreme and though would be part of traditional fish chips and mussy please 😁
P. H.
Had the best Cod & chips I have ever had.Batter was light & the fish was flaky.Chips were great too.Portions are generous.Staff were extremely friendly & attentive.I would highly recommend this restaurant.
M. T.
Good fish and chips in a nice restaurant. Wide selection of fish to choose from, all served with proper chips.
K. I.
Great food and wonderful service
S.
Lovely fish andd chips and grest friendly service
I. W.
Great fish and chips, good service
J. B.
Very good food and the service is the best I've ever had. If you don't want to sit in there is a takeaway. Well worth a visit.
A. W.
First time in here , I am gluten free . No problem for them . After hunting for somewhere in the north east for 2 days this was worth the wait . Thank you ,first class fish supper , first class service .
J. R.
Excellent fish and chips, either take away or to sit in at restaurant. View onto Durham Market Square. Walking distance to Durham Cathedral and Castle. Market day Saturday.
E. M.
Queue outside because of still in use social distancing measures. Food good. 25 minute queue but I'm assuming that will change.
C. B.
Excellent food, staff and view
E. G.
Very tasty food but if you buy just chips portions are quite small. Different story if you buy fish and chips.
R.
Me and the wife called in for some lunch during the miners gala, staff were great, and we had the best haddock and chips we have both had for a long time, and nice ice cold glass for our bottles of Budweiser lovely touch on a hot day, please try you won't be disappointed
A. M.
Well worth the money. The best fish and chips I've had. We'll be definitely coming back.
i. G.
Can not sat anything bad about this places other than it don't know what a wally is
S. Y.
