Recommended. Amazing fish & chips, very friendly staff. I travel from Consett, I’ve also got my brothers who live in Gateshead coming here for fish & chips.

The fish and chips that I had were the best in the area, I would 100% recommend these, same with the curry sauce. The cheesy chips however were just the chips with a cheese slice on top which was very underwhelming but the rest was great

Fun to see the coal powered fryers after being featured on Michael Portillo’s railway show this week.
Delicious food, I took Mum and Dad who are up from East Anglia on holiday.
Loved it, proper trad and all the better for it. I had delicious Haddock, they both had cod. Real batter and tasty chips. Thanks, see you again soon.

My local fish shop. Lovely friendly staff, good menu and food always lovely

First time I've ever been as not local, just passing through. Just got a bag of chips - but what a bag of chips! Absolutely delicious. I can't remember ever having chippy chips as nice as this. Will definitely call in next time I'm down that way. 😋

I love the fish and chips here. Batter is amazing. however, often the fish is very small.
B. M.
Good old classic fish and chips uniquely cooked in a old fashioned coal fired fryer and in beef dripping which is then traditionally wrapped in newspaper🤤. Beautiful, proper fish and chips some of the best I’ve ever tasted, this is just the way fish and chips should be. I’d definitely recommend!🐟.

Cheerful welcoming staff and prompt service. As soon as you walk in they ask what your order is so that when its your turn to be served your order is ready.

Excellent Fish & Chips. Good value and great service.
Best 'Plaice' I've found near Esh Winning / Ushaw Moor 😆

This is the best fish and chips by far! I have yet to find a better fish and chips in the North East. Fields fish shop still uses coal fired fryers for fantastic tasting food. Definitely beats more well known fish shops in the area, highly recommended.

Well this is so important that you use this fish and chip shop to keep our heritage. This fish and chip shop is the best by far because of the unique way they cook there chips and the way they deep fry the fish. Still using coal and other old methods makes this fish and chip shop my favourite when visiting this part of the country. I drove from Kent once and the first place we stopped after a 6 hour drive was Fields. That's just shows how good this place here without mentioning the old established fryer and decor.
B. G.
Almost perfect fish and chips and we make the journey to get ours here even though it's a 15 minute drive from home.
It would be 5 stars if they could work out how to drain more of the oil from the chips (we end up dabbing them down with kitchen roll when we get home).

Great tasting fish n chips.. Great quality.. Good prices... Staff are always cheerful and chatty... All round 5 stars ✨

Easily the best fish and chip shop in County Durham. Absolutely amazing great value for money and a bit of a rarity now. Outside of beamish this is the only local location still using a coal powered frying range. Walking into this place you smell it instantly and it smells amazing food to go come wrapped in newspaper just like in the old days. Very very reasonably priced. I don't live very local to this place but often find myself travelling here for fish and chips as you simply can't get this taste anywhere else. 100% highly recommended.

Thus chip shop is phenomebal. I've just had spam fritter and chips, cooked properly in dripping, and I can't believe how good they were. This is like going back in time to spring bank holidays at Scarborough 50 years ago.
This must be the best chip shop in the UK. I'm just pleased it's not on my doorstep or I'd never be away
Sublime

Would definitely recommend.

Pretty much the best fish and chips in the surrounding villages. Been going here for decades. Coal fired and cooked in exactly what fish and chips should be cooked in.... beef dripping!!

First visit to this fish and chip shop today and we will be visiting again. As usual it was really busy being good Friday, but got served quite promptly. It was like stepping into a scene from Beamish. This shop still uses a coal fired furnace, one of the few left in existence. We usually go to Colmans at shields, but these fish and chips were much nicer, will definitely be returning, definitely worth a visit.

Go through the door and enter the time warp! Enjoyed my Fish and Chips + Fish. Mentioned to my Son that coal fired ranges exist in old Colliery districts. Last one I saw was in Wingate area 40 years ago. Well worth checking out.

A brilliant old-school fish and chip shop. Has a coal-fired fryer which is quite something. The cod from here is excellent.
