Reviews of The Capital
W. A.
I went there with a group of colleagues in July. The place was nice and felt upscale, and the food was fine. Our waiter was not particularly patient, however, and did not seem to offer satisfactory information about foods. Also, the gentleman declined to issue separate bills, which made us waste like 15 minutes to sort things out and make individual payments.
It's not bad, but I probably won't go there again.
M. H.
An excellent curry. But not cheap. £14 just for the meat dish. £4.50 for a rice. £4 for a bread. £7 a pint for cobra. Food won't disappoint but there are certainly cheaper options.

Food was fantastic. Service was impeccable. The dining area was well designed and upscale. Prices were reasonable for such an establishment. The only reason I give it four stars is because I felt the server taking our order was offering us a starter that was complimentary but when checking out, we saw we were charged for it. I thought that was misleading. I understand that upselling is business but I don't like being misled and not informed I will be charged for it.
Nevertheless, I would eat here again. The food was great.

Was Okish. Too much oil in chicken starter.
Paneer was decent. Not great. Chappati was made of Maida rather than wheat flour as it was said in the menu. A bit overpriced.
N.
Very accommodating, we called in without a reservation and after a short wait at the bar were given a table. We did wait a long time after ordering for the food to be brought out .
Really tasty lamb dishes, fantastic naan breads and good portion sizes, but not cheap. Was around £7 for a pint of lager, main dishes were around £15, then breads, rice and popadoms, totalling around £65 for 2 people.

Absolutely delicious, one of the best Indian restaurants I've ever had. Large portions, excellently flavoured and balanced. Demolished the starter and cannot wait for the main course. Could not recommend more!!!!
D. M.
An excellent meal with friendly staff and great service. The meat in my lamb bhuna was really good quality, my friend had a vegetarian curry. The staff said they can make anything on the menu vegetarian, they do themselves a disservice by not advertising this on the menu! A limited beer selection but has what you would expect at a curry house-sitting cobra, kingfisher and some UK beers.

Six of us ate at The Capital on Tuesday the 13th September and fully recommend the food, service, staff and cleanliness throughout, not overpriced considering the quality and extensive menu choice, shame we don’t live locally
J. H.
It's was a busy Wednesday night in The Capital when I and three others decided only a curry would do.
Service was good, quick and friendly, the restaurant continued to fill but food served fairly swiftly. I had the garlic Balti, I did ask for it Madras hot, that was obviously absent from the final dish that was none the less tasty.
Clean inside and out, prices not unreasonable although nothing remarkable about the place it did exactly what we asked of it.
A. S.
Delicious food, prepared mild as requested, great variety of choices, prepared in just 20 minutes for take away. Will come back.
K. J.
Fantastic meal and service. Lovely attentive staff. Everything was beautifully presented and piping hot. We hadn't booked but they accommodated us on a busy Saturday evening. Thank-you Will be back.
C. E. S.
Love the food here, great ambience too, reminds of the Indian restaurant I went to once as a kid! Happy days!
P. M.
Had a lovely experience at the restaurant, the food was superb.
The staff was very friendly, warm and exceptional service in overall.
Definitely will stop by another time and definitely recommended.
C. J.
Had an impromptu night and was the second time I’ve been, Absolutely beautiful food, fresh, cooked and presented beautifully by brilliant staff.
The restaurant is really clean as you would expect of fine dining, can’t rate this enough
j. c.
Always great food
The staff are all top quality
The only Indian we will use in Durham
S. B.
5 of us went for meals great food but loads of it beware they don't let you share so we had loads left which was just a complete waste but they have to make money and it was packed so do understand why good staff tasty food don't think you would get in if you don't book
D. H.
Ordered from here many times with no issues, food always top quality and on time. On Friday there was a slight technical issue which meant a delay with our order, which wasn't a problem at all but the staff at The Capital went out of their way to resolve the issue. Would have given 5 stars regardless as we love this place but I was nice to see that customer satisfaction is important to them. Can't recommend this place highly enough, it really is top notch stuff. Great selection for coeliacs too which is really useful for my partner who has a gluten intolerance! 10/10
M. J.
Friendly and efficient staff, even for our large group, and the food was just brilliant.

Absolutely beautiful food and service!
R. C.
Great food ... the tikka liver starter was amazing
S. M.
How is durham so full of fantastic Indian restaurants? The capital is probably the best if the bunch. Service was a bit slow but it was well worth the wait. Everyone cleared their plates and 3 weeks later people were still mentioning how good the food was.
J. S.
Always a great experience. The staff are right there and always willing to help. The food is amazing and we have never had a bad meal. Top Indian in Durham. Go. You won't be disappointed.
S. B.
The food was delicious, the presentation, ambience and service was good aswell.strongly recommend. The chap who sat opposite to me was enjoying every mouthful. Never seen someone so dramatic in a restaurant. After tasting the food can relate to why he gave those expressions
T.
Best Indian cuisine I’ve ever tried, recommend it to everyone that is looking to dine!
F. S. P. O.
Well seasoned Indian food at a reasonable price. The selection of dishes is wide and offers something to everyone's taste, including those with special dietary requirements. Good for groups, casual dinners or a nice night out.
M. R.
If there were half stars I would rate it 4.5 stars. Waiter was attentive, food was hot and arrived quickly. Prawn dopiaza was tasty, my wife loved the kashmiri naan so much so she ordered another one to take home. The pilau rice was, well pilau rice and the chicken tikka masala was very generous with the chicken and an ok red masala sauce but I didn't get the roasted chicken flavour coming through.
The waiter kindly brought my wife some more hot water to top up her tea with no additional charge (which is not the same everywhere). Overall the meal was tasty and reasonably priced. There was no service charge and I even had to ask to add a tip to the credit card!
Note there is only on street parking available which is limited with double yellow lines down one side of the road. Just a 10 minute walk from Travelodge though.
S. P.
Fantastic as always. We had our works Christmas meal at The Capital last night - the food was delicious and we were well looked after even though the restaurant was very busy. Highly recommended.
P. J.
Nice indian restaurant with a large menu. Clean and fresh. We ordered dinner for four, a variety of dishes. The food was tasty and the pride was ok. The staff experience was mixed. One of them very friendly and explained everything but one only put the food down, saying nothing.
In short a slightly mixed experience.
C. B.
Great food served here. Service was brilliant from start to finish. Only downside was we heard the same song, on repeat for the whole 2 hours we were in there. Highly recommended though if you can switch off for the music.
E. D.
The best indian food in uk 🙈❤️ the staff it’s amazing. I mean evething it’s amazing 🤩
G. C.
Worth a visit although I find the service levels drop the more busier they are, food is nice though! I did find my Lamb Samosa starter a little over cooked and dry, main dish of Chicken Madras and Keema Rice was spot on.
P. M.
Food and wine excellent.
However, have taken a star off for disappointing service from waiter with glasses and beard. We told him we wanted 2 papadoms for 2 people and a veg pakora for my son as starters, and he didn’t bring the veg pakora for my son until we’d finished our papadoms which meant my son dad been suiting hungry for 20 mins while we are the papadoms.
We asked for a jug of water and he brought one glass of water.
We asked for a mild to medium sauce to accompany the lamb biryani and in response he repeatedly said “ you want a madras sauce”. Since when was a madras sauce mild to medium? To minimise the likelihood of him bringing a madras sauce we changed from a mild to medium sauce to a mild sauce which turned out to be bland and tasteless. If the waiter hadn’t insisted a mild to medium sauce was a madras, our meal would have been perfect with a medium sauce similar to a Bhuna.
When we got the bill the waiter had mistakenly added items on which we subsequently got deducted.
Excellent food, nice ambiance, and restaurant and toilets spotlessly clean. However, disappointing service from waiter with glasses and beard for reasons outlined above.
I. K.
This place usually is top notch. However, on this occasion, the food was simply "ok" which, by The Capital's standards, is disappointing. Not sure whether the usual chef was off but sadly we were really underwhelmed by the food on this visit.....
C. H.
Travelled from London for this, plenty of dishes, priced well and excellent flavours, the atmosphere is on point and service is CLASS.
j. R.
Totally awesome!!! Staff really friendly, food was to die for, we were given a free drink at the end of our meal, and I got to take the flower of my table home to.
C. 9.
Best Indian restaurant in the North East. Staff are great and the food is exquisite. The chef is clearly a very talented person and the consistency is always a high standard. Great place.

Cozy little place. The food is not authentic Indian though.. spices are mild. Suits great for british tastebuds but not for those who want real indian food.
R. P.

The quality of the food here is significantly better than any of the other Indian restaurants in Durham as is the service.
