Excellent food! The place is quite hidden and small but cosy and the service is great. Duck carpaccio starter was amazing. Then the salmon main dish was too. And lemon tart for dessert - pure joy! Really a place to recommend!

Great value for money! Three course dinner plus two glass wine x 2, for slightly over 100 pounds. Small restaurant with a nice atmosphere and excellent service.

The most amazing meal. The host could not have been more attentive and the food was first class! The Mushroom and Leek soup was to die for! Would give this place 6 stars if I could. Will be back next time I'm in Edinburgh. Doing an amazing job in these difficult times. Thank you for an amsome meal 👍👏😊

A tiny little place down some steps. But don’t let that fool you! The food was really great. Great twists on classic Scottish dishes. And we thought the price was reasonable for the excellent quality. The wild boar dish was exceptional.

Whenever we are in Edinburgh we always try and eat here. Ate here this evening and had the most brilliant meal again. And the sticky toffee pudding is amazing.
Great quality food, beautifully cooked with care and friendly service.
Little gem in heart of the city.

Good dining experience. Yummy food with a twist. Reasonable prices. Lovely staff. The soup was super yummy and fragrant. Had the pork belly and boar which was excellent. Other highlights of the meal were the halibut. Would recommend if you’re in the area.

This was our first visit to the new premises, shame on us! Everything was first class as we've come to expect from Richard and Margaret and their staff. Varied menu with lots of choice. Excellent wine list as well. We'll be back again soon x

The chef at this restaurant provided us with delicious, made from scratch, meals using local meats and produce. He and the waitstaff could not be more accommodating. The chef came by to describe the approach he would use to modify a main dish on the menu in order to address my food allergy. Amazing. Everything from the appetizer to the dessert was outstanding if you like fine food. The concierge at the Radisson Blu recommended this restaurant, and we are so glad he did.

An intimate, family owned & operated little restaurant below street level, with superb food & attentive service. I had the Angus beef callops, which were very tender & served with a wonderfully flavorful red wine sauce. Highly recommended!

Amazing little secret and the best food we’ve had in Edinburgh. Varied, quality menu and lovely people who care about service and quality . Very sensibly priced as an added bonus. Highly recommend!

Visited this place a few months back when I had family visiting but only getting around to writing the review. We had a great meal here with a varied menu of Scottish dishes and products in a contemporary manner. I did find the service a little inattentive at times but we had a good time over all.

Creme’ Brûlée was delicious and the Roasted Boar was worth the wait.

What a find!
A fantastic family run restaurant that ticks every box! Cozy dining room, wonderful friendly service from people who really care that you are having a good time. And the food is absolutely brilliant. Richard (know his name because he came out and chatted to us after to see if everything was ok - class) has created a bold menu from some local producers that was just lovely. You’ve gotta be good to bring out a top Cullen Skink and he did. Fish medley and Angus Beef collups we’re also fab. The home made Scott’s oat cakes with the cheese finished it all off perfectly.
#bookit YOU’LL LOVE IT.

This restaurant moved from Causewayside to Royal Mile mid 2017 so most of the pictures are out of date. They are now where the old Dubh Prais was and it's still the name at the door because the building facade is being renovated. Inside the decor are toilets have been revamped. It's only 30 covers so the atmosphere is very cosy and romantic. The standard of food is high and good value. The choice for the Christmas lunch was the best that I have seen. It's still the same husband and wife team running it and they say all their clients are still coming from where they used to be, so that tells you something.

Having never heard of Hewat's, I was sceptical at first, then I took a look at the menu and two things emerged: It was more Scottish than I expected and more expensive!
The average starter was about £6 and £16 for a main. The steak was sitting at a pretty £26. This is not overly expensive for Edinburgh, so it's not something I'm complaining about.
On this note - during the week they do a 'Dine for £10' deal - which is something not to miss - this food for £10 is a fantastic deal!
The were very friendly and attentive when we arrived, taking our coats and offering us drinks while we waited for the rest of our party to arrive.
For a starter I had the Cullen Skink with mussels which was very good. My OH had the black pudding & haggis risotto, which I was lucky enough to get a picture of before he inhaled it! He loved every bite of it.
For the main meal I had a seafood mix, pea risotto & the OH had the Boar. Yes, boar! It seemed to be a favourite as several of the group we were with enjoyed it. My only quirk is I find it difficult to peel king prawns in a nice restaurant without using my fingers.
The food is a strange fusion of Scottish and something I can't quite place my finger on. Even the desserts seemed to be fusions of other deserts.
Dessert - where do I begin. One coupe had the taster platter, and the OH had the sticky toffee pudding - which looked and tasted amazing. I would have had the same if I had any room left in my stomach for more food!
During desert, the chef came by the table and offered everyone a complimentary glass of a white port and talked us through it, which was very nice.
Overall they took care of us, the food was delicious & I would definitely go back - probably to try the desert alone!

Been going to Hewat's since 2009 at its old premises and was keen to try out the new location. Was there for Hogmanay dinner and so the menu was specialised. I had a chicken balmoral and my partner had boar wellington, neither of us wanted to share as we were enjoying it so much!
Staff all very polite and attentive, in spite of them being very busy.
Glad to see Liam, Margaret and Richard thriving in their new location, and wish them all the best. Will definitely be visiting again.

Ate at Hewat's. Very good local food. You have got to get used to it, but the quality and presentation is excellent.
Situated in a cellar so hard to find. Has no storefront, only a door at the street.

Absolutely delightful little place - easy to miss off the Royal Mile, but you shouldn't pass it by. And whatever you have for dinner, the cheese plate awaits at the end.

(Translated) My vacation as well as panoramic, can be defined as gastronomic, I like to eat and eat well! Here we can say that I ate very well.
Smallish restaurant almost invisible from the road (the road towards Edinburgh Castle starting from John Knox's house)
Staff very prepared and kind.
Price paid a little high.
I chose a very very good fish menu and well presented

Personale molto preparato e gentile.
Prezzo pagato un po' alto.
Io ho scelto un menù di pesce molto molto buono e ben presentato

(Translated) Scottish cuisine, quite varied, the place is very small and the staff is a bit 'repelling. Overall good food, but in my opinion a little expensive sometimes messed up. There were seven of us and we paid € 35 per person for one per person, 4 glasses of red wine and 4 desserts.

(Translated) In the heart of the Royal mile, a small cozy restaurant is “hidden”. Despite the fact that there is a tourist area and, as a rule, food is so-so in it, this restaurant refutes this cliche! Very tasty food! Great food! Great service. The beef was incomparable!) I recommend!
