Reviews of Ondine Restaurant
C. K.
Decent experience. My main was on par with other seafood restaurants. Naturally flavourful, nothing more and nothing less. Presentation of dishes also acceptably standard. Batter and fry somewhat disappointing by comparison.
Lighting somewhat darker than usual, alright for dining, not that great for appreciating the beautiful red colour of the lobster I was to consume.

My son and I celebrated my last night in Scotland at Ondine. I am very glad we did. The food was excellent, as was the service.

After having read the reviews about Odine, I was a little skeptical about coming for lunch to celebrate my husband’s birthday…. I shouldn’t have worried as it was a lovely lunch! We were welcomed and shown to our table and everything was very quick, efficient and as expected. The food choice was fine and when our starters arrived, they were tasty, albeit one of them ( 2 scallops) was quite a small portion for the price! Our main course was also delicious, ( halibut and tartare). The service was friendly and overall we had a good time. Is it expensive for what you get? Yes, but the ambience is good and for a special occasion, I’d say it probably is one of the top restaurants we’ve eaten at in Edinburgh!

***The fruits of the ocean was outstanding. Really outstanding. ****
There is a difference in the online prices and the prices on site....
The fish quality is really great through, I do wish they were slightly more adventurous with their spices
The salt and pepper tempura was lacking in both salt and pepper in a weirdly heavy batter. The accompanying sauce was adequate. The lemon sole was fresh but anemic in spices.
Solid deserts

Great food, quiet, private but expensive. Had the Lobster Thermidor which was amazing and the wife had fish. I ordered better :-) All in, we were £180 for 3 courses and drinks.

If you want seafood then I can't recommend this place enough. We ordered the cold seafood platter and when I saw it from across the room I couldn't believe the size of it. There was so much, more than enough for two of us and so much variety. Prepared to perfection and so delicious. The staff were excellent and the atmosphere was fabulous. We drank a couple of bottles of the verde as well and they went superbly with the food. Overall had an amazing night and will most definitely be dining here again when we're next in Edinburgh.
S. D.
Amazing. The service, food, atmosphere and drinks all made for an excellent evening. 10/10 would definitely return.

Nearly had a scare when the receptionist couldnt find our reservation. But the food and the service were completely top notched and so good. This is a place we will certainly visit again for the fresh seafood and excellent meals.

Fabulous seafood spot in Old Town Edinburgh. Book ahead because it’s popular and small. Seafood tower is a great treat for two. Nicely curated wine list. Local.

Much improved seafood platter - hot. Very garlicky and loads of seafood - absolutely stuffed. Had two huge stone crab claws too! - see photos! Lovely garlic sauce and 85 pounds! Money well spent - have visited twice already in 2021.

Very good quality, fresh ingredients, nice presentation, great service.
A bit pricey but so worth it !

Good seafood restaurant. The restaurant is well designed with an elegant feel. Meals were okay and the service was good.

The first stop when we come back to Edinburgh. Happy hour for the oysters is always good fun. Scallop starter and my monkfish main course were superb.

There's a reason why this restaurant is rated one of the bests in Edinburgh. I came across this restaurant in the Michelin guide website and since I saw the lobster thermidor on the menu, I had set my eyes on trying them. I didn't manage to reserve a seat so I chanced it on my last day in Edinburgh. As luck would have it, I got a table on the bar side. Hands down one of the best lobster thermidors I have ever tasted. Perfectly cooked, perfectly seasoned. The butter had a sweetness to it and was charred to perfection that complemented the natural umami taste of the lobster. I was recommended to have the beef tomato on the side and it could not have been a more perfect choice. The great selection of wines only meant my meal was accompanied by a nice Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. I did save the best for my last meal in Edinburgh. I am going home with a happy tummy!

I have one word for this place, and that is "pretention".
Ondine promises to be a smart, hip, and quality eatery that is unfortunately currently hidden behind scaffolding. On climbing the stairs to the restaurant, we were met by a staff member who kindly offered to take our coats, then immediately continued with "we're not precious about it". Good, we weren't either, and kept our clothing thanks as this was a bit of a turn-off. Other, more highly-lauded establishments will wait for you to take your coat off after making this offer, and not immediately dismiss it.
We sat, at a nice table, and perused the menu having first asked for some water for the table which was poured into glasses for us, and then periodically refilled by a waiter that was clearly looking for something to do. Normally you'd expect the bottle to be left on the table so as not to be intrusive on the dining experience.
We ordered 6 crispy oysters to start which were excellent and promised for a good meal to come, had our wine arrived which we ordered a bottle of at the same time as everything else. This eventually turned up after the oysters, and we had to ask again for it. Generally speaking, white wine comes out of the chiller (which is clearly visible to the guests) which makes the delay slightly incomprehensible. More about the wine later.
Next came our fish, the main event. This was not an occasion to have the lobster, or one of the large sharing platters of seafood (we had child with us) so Lemon Sole for me, Turbot for the others. Now, any restaurant where you have to order (and pay for) potatoes and vegetables as separate items is a restaurant that needs to be avoided. Any chef worth their salt builds a dish around all elements that sit on the plate, and ensures they work together, not leave that to the customer. So, £40 later I had a main course. Unfortunately this was a main course I could have quite easily cooked at home, there was nothing particularly bad about it except for my carrots not arriving, but it wasn't anything jaw-shatteringly or eye-rollingly brilliant either. My Sole came with capers and shrimp on top and (I presume) seaweed/other green items which as I say was nice, but was not worth the fee. We didn't stay for dessert, mainly because after the above-mentioned events, this simply wasn't sufficiently attractive. I said I'd come back to the wine.... Strangely, the waiter kept coming over to refill our glasses from the bottle on the table, even though we did not have empty glasses... This felt very odd, and again, rushed. It was almost as if they were very keen to draw attention to the service by concentrating on the wrong things. Very attentive, until it was time to pay, and we were just left alone with a large bill and debit card sat on top of it... For goodness sake, just bring the machine over.
Overall the bill for 6 oysters, a bottle of wine, and some fish, came to more than we paid for starters, mains, and desserts, and drinks, at the previous evening's eatery which I am about to review... Save your money, unless you are for some inexplicable reason, drawn to the gastronomic equivalent of Hyacinth Bucket.
D. B.
Lovely meal only criticism is that the sauce my halibut was on was far too salty and dips really rich. Food was excellent but only for a nice treat ended up £110 each and that was with no wine
U. N.
Over-rated.
Expensive for what we had.
Food OK, nice decor, cold service and not once someone cared to refill our glasses.
Nothing major to fault here but comparing to the delightful service we had the night before at Paolozzi, it was a less than satisfactory experience. We do not recommend this place.
T. Q.
Lovely restaurant for seafood in centre of Edinburgh. The Oyster bar is a good experience that changes from usual eat-at-the-table dinning.
C. G. S.
Great service and amazing food. A bit pricey but still absolutely worth it for a special occasion and you get the best seafood and service
S. B.
Lovely place! I took a chance as it was on my way and popped in without reservation just before they meant to close the kitchen for afternoon break. The team was very friendly: I got seated, didn't feel rushed and was served the most delicious food. Thank you guys!
C.
Thank you to Charlie and the team for looking after us so well last Tuesday at Ondine.
We had a great time sat at the bar. Everything from the warm welcome, to the delicious food and wine and the wonderful service were just perfect.
Very many thanks
h. m.
Exceptional. Great restaurant and incredible service. The fish soup is a must!
C. G.
Had home delivery from Ondine during lockdown. Delivered around lunchtime for cooking that evening. The cooking instructions (for the dishes that needed it!!) were spot on and minimal effort. What an absolute treat! Can not recommend Ondine enough, thank you
E. T.
Oysters were ok but not properly shucked so they were hard to eat as they were still attached to the shells. The crispy oysters were ok, just nondescript fried bites lacking flavor. I think this restaurant is very overpriced for what you get and it is a bit awkward / stuffy. I wouldn't come again just not enough of a draw on the menu. I was expecting an old school oyster bar bistro type of place with character but instead I got an outdated old vibe. Whoever put this on a "best of Edinburgh" dining list is seriously wrong.
T. M.
Fish soup was absolutely delicious, Dover sole cooked to perfection and full of flavour. Wine was perfect temperature and paired well. Definitely recommend. £130 for 2 courses 2 people with wine.
J. C.
One of the dishes was very salty and we had to get the manager for it to be addressed. Otherwise the food was fantastic and the oyster happy hour is an amazing deal. Would definitely recommend!
The risotto could also have been a little bit less al dante. The soup was great!
N. S.
What can I say? To start with, service is fantastic. Craig is lovely and amazing and you want to go back there just to see him. Food was delicious and oyster hours fantastic. Never thought I loved oysters that much. The deep fried oyster was a surprisingly delicious twist. Sharing platter works more as a starter if you are sharing between 3/4 people. Ondine is definitely worth a visit if you are in Edinburgh. On arrival we were told we couldn't sit at the bar because the didn't have a license for children. As we had a table booked for later on, they sat us at the table do we could sit with our daughter and served us the bar deal. Lovely <3
H. K.
Very nice place and food, I would have liked to give it 4 and a half though. You dine in the restaurant with a nice atmosphere and if you're lucky you get a window seat in which you can look out on the street below. The dress code is Formal. The servers are nice and the wait times for food were low. So to begin, we had nice bread and cheese buns and for our starters, we had Hebridean Smoked Salmon, Tigermilk Oysters, Tempura Squid and Fish and Shellfish soup. Our favourites were the Fish and Shellfish Soup, Squid and lastly Salmon. For our mains, we had Haddock and Chips, Monkfish and Halibut. Out of those three meals, our favourites were the Halibut and the Haddock. So we had an Excellent formal Birthday dinner in the warm environment of the restaurant and Bar.
R. L.
I had high hopes for this restaurant and after a night at the White Horse, it had a lot to live up to. The food did not disappoint. We had the mixed seafood platter, which was very lovely, fresh and spot on. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable and didn’t seem pretentious at all. The layout of the restaurant however, left us feeling rather uncomfortable. It was bright and spaced out, which didn’t make it feel very romantic. It made us feel like we were being observed by others and not at all intimate. The dated pop music didn’t help matters either. It wasn’t in keeping with the trendy upmarket vibes of the menu and website.
Overall great food and staff, but they need to take a step back and think about what vibe they are trying to set.
W. M.
Definitely one of the best seafood restaurants in Edinburgh, its a lovely place to be in with friendly knowledgeable staff and excellent food/wine. Pleasantly relaxed atmosphere means that it's easy to relax and enjoy your visit. Be warned though, it's not cheap, but it's definitely worth it.

Great location, tastefully decorated, excellent service. Food is not the cheapest but best seafood we have had in Edinburgh. Definitely will return.
A. M.
First class seafood restaurant. One if the best in Edinburgh and definitely worthy of a Michelin Star. Brilliant food and wine. Staff friendly, efficient and knowledgeable. I would definitely recommend and I will definitely be going back.

Ondine serves up mouthwatering fresh and innovative seafood dishes in a chic, modern atmosphere right in Old Town. We started with 6 oysters (18 GBP), and all of them were unique -- some robust and briney, others fresh and tangy. For mains, we got the brown crab risotto (19 GBP) which was funky and stuffed full with crab, and the monkfish (26 or 28 GBP). Both were tasty, although the presentation of the risotto was a bit subpar (looked a bit like oatmeal) and the portions were on the small side (but hey, I'm American!). We rounded out the meal with the cheese plate (11 GBP) and the treacle tart. The tart was lovely, not overly sweet, although the cheese plate was a bit of the miss for me -- the brie and one of the hard cheeses were both completely devoid of character.
Overall, Ondine was a great fine dining experience for our last night in Edinburgh. I was a bit disappointed with our service -- our waiter seemed quite aloof and brusque that evening (not just with us but seemingly with all the tables in our vicinity) but everyone else we interacted with was quite nice!
S. G.
Very very fresh seafood and love the oyster happy hour! We mainly had started here to start our might off and loved it. The service was great,, very attentive
T. L.
We had a lovely dinner here, with a platter of freshly cooked seafood in garlic sauce. The crabs, lobsters, mussels, oysters were all fresh and juicy. Definitely not for the dainty as we had to get all our fingers wet and working, but it was all worth it.
I'd hope the crab claws could've been cracked in the kitchen more before coming out, as it was really tough with the tools provided as the shell was really tough.
Nonetheless, we had a good time and the service staff were pleasant and helpful 💯☺️
O. T.
Seriously fresh and flavourful seafood. The oysters and scallops were exceptional.
P. Y.
Made a reservation for lunch on 29 December and we were really looking forward to visiting Ondine. In the morning, we received a call telling us our reservation had been cancelled due to Covid-related issues. We were slightly dismayed when we passed the restaurant in the evening to find it open! Restaurant staff could've offered us a table at another timing so that we could've at least visited during our stay in Edinburgh. V. disappointed with the handling of this.
Z. Y.
Very delicious seafood and a nice collection of wine. Tried Crab risotto, grilled scallops and malt whisky. Very delightful experience.
C. G.
Had a great lunch at Ondine. The lobster was amazing and the steak so juicy!! I’d definitely recommend this place.
H. S. (.
Lovely little spot overlooking Victoria street with great staff, excellent seafood and a very nice selection of champagne and fresh oysters. I would not hesitate to try anything on the menu.
T. Q.
Fresh oysters, max of 12 pp during happy hour. Unpretentious vibe. Calamari and the truffle potato were out of this world!
G.
Ondine was just incredible, the service was great, the wine terrific, the food was incredible. It is pricey but definitely good value. I had a mixture of the oysters on offer, the monkfish. Definitely recommend for a special dinner.
R. G.
We stopped here at 18.00 for the happy hour at the bar. They offer a single oyster for 1 pound each (maximum 12 for person). We ordered ofc 24 oysters and slurped them with a good glass of wine. The waiter was not convinced that we could finish them but we are professional oyster slurpers, it was no big deal for us 😂. Dessert was very good as it was the athmosphere and the service.
E. S.
No complaints! The tempura squid was rly great, the scallops were expensive but tasty and we had a good time.
K. N.
Pricey but good seafood. I got the oysters, Fish & Shellfish Soup and Lemon Sole Meunière. It's filet with tiny brown shrimps on top. They were delicious
M. D.
Amazing seafood.
So fresh
Staff is extremely friendly and nice.
Worth visiting when you are in Edinburgh
J. W.
Oysters and mussels here taste so good and the service is spectacular as well. Our orders are fully served in just 10 mins. Highly recommended!
M. C.
Excellent but credit card still in shock, and that was just for a very light lunch!
J. H.
We've had a few takeaways in the past year and they've been excellent - amongst the best of those we've tried, and we've tried a lot..
But yesterday was the first time in the restaurant for quite a while. I'm glad to say it's as good, if not better, than ever. The casual, oyster bar vibe is to our taste. And the owner (Roy) was cooking, which is always good to see...
We'll be back soon for the 'buck-a-shuck' 5.30pm Tuesday-Saturday offer to see if it's possible to keep the quality high at that price.
J. M.
Really nice seafood and great atmosphere.
S. L.
Fresh sweet oysters, £1 each during happy hours (5:30-6:30pm Mon-Thurs, 5:00-6:00 Fri Sat). Highly recommend!
K. K. (.
The food was amazing! We had oysters and mussels, they were so fresh and cooked to perfection. Dessert was also so, so good. The staff were all amazing and very attentive. What an amazing and memorable night. Thank you so much Ondine restaurant, for making our visit to Edinburgh so memorable.
I. K.
Exquisite seafood. Excellent friendly staff. Pricey but worth the spoil.
B. T.
The mussels are a must try! Service and ambiance were excellent but the price of the drinks are above market rate.
H. J.
Oysters were really good..Service was good but the champagne cocktail I ordered was 15 pounds!! I mean really?!
D. N.
Very enjoyable lunch. It's pricey, but the fish & shellfish soup followed by the monkfish was a treat. The staff were friendly and relaxed, plus the nautical design was eye catching. It's not the highest rated restaurant in Scotland for nothing!
J. N.
Fantastic food, service and ambience. Really enjoyed our meal here and would highly recommend. Staff fantastic
C. K.
Was taken here as a birthday surprise. It was definitely a surprise, as I am not a seafood fan.
I am now.
It was very, very, good
S. B.
Great service, even better seafood - the crispy oysters were the standout dish.
J. B.
Great service, menu on sight seems slightly expensive but actually is actually incredibly reasonable for the portion sizes. Whole lobster and chips for £39 is a bargain. Calamari was the best I've ever had. Dessert (I had the ganache) was 10/10.
W. I.
I always seem to be disappointed with my experience here. For the cost you expect perfection.
Lobster was undercooked, new one cooked but without the large claw, no finger bowls delivered to our table but provided to others
So both service and cooking below par 🤔
R. D.
Great location, pleasant inside. They sat us at the bar, though it looked like there were tables available (maybe no-shows on bookings?). Regardless, the bar tender was very helpful with navigating some food intolerances (gluten and dairy) and recommending wine. The food itself was quite nice. We got mussels mariniere, which they specially made for us since the normal broth has cream. The oysters were fresh and delicious. Same with the lobster and sole. They also customised a pavlova for me to use strawberries instead of raspberries, and it was not overly sweet. We highly recommend this spot.
r. d.
Fantastic food, very helpful staff and an all-round lovely restaurant. The freshness of the seafood was second to none.....and fine cocktails too!
R. O.
Amazing service and great seafood. Definitely worth a visit when in Edinburgh
P. J. S.
Superb. Excellent service and the menu was delightful. A real lunchtime treat and we shall be back for dinner and lunch again too. Keep up the fine work. Delicious.
G. T.
Sensational seafood. Roy Brett understands seafood and this restaurant has the best that Scotland has to offer. Every bite is delicious. The freshness and delicate flavours are not hidden by this master chefs light touch. The private dining room is perfect for celebrations and the main restaurant has a buzz that even the new social distancing rules don’t ruin. Don’t forget that we have this gem right on our doorstep and when you can’t be bothered to cook I hear that their truly historic hone delivery service just might be coming back.
M. S.
Excellent mussels and tempura squid followed by lovely lemon sole. For dessert chocolate ganache and excellent cheeses all in a lovely room. Well worth the visit.
Ζ. M.
Modern place central location and happy hour for oysters but you must make a reservation first
M. S.
Had a great dinner here. The seafood was outstanding !
C. H.
Great location
Top notch service be doing over backwards to accommodate some food allergies.
Food was amazing.
Will definitely return.
H. C.
The food at Ondine was absolutely delicious, well prepared and professionally cooked. The staff were also very professional whilst being helpful and friendly. A definite 5 star experience 😋
F. W.
The food here is outstanding, we had the seafood platter and it really is superb. I've seen reviews complaining about price, yes it's expensive but that doesn't mean it's not good value.
The 4 rather than 5 star rating is for the service, which was indifferent, bored looking staff doing their best to tunnel-vison past raised hands.
Overall though a good experience and will get round to going again sometime.
L. C.
Wow. Absolutely incredible food. Not a single fault with the whole experience. Thanks guys.
E. P.
Absolutely amazing food! So delicious and quick out of the kitchen. Staff are warm and welcoming - couldn't do en2for us.
B. T.
We had a lovely lunch here the other day. Every single dish we had was excellent - both taste and presentation. Service was friendly and professional. It's not for a quick bite, we ended up staying for quite long but I would definitely go back.
K. M.
Service was great even during Covid with a mother in law for a birthday dinner. Food was good, not necessarily on par with the pricing though. Okay atmosphere, good for a fancy occasion or date night. Honestly the starter seafood soup was to die for, the rest even satay monkfish was good.
O. Z.
Great seafood selection, we had the joint platter and it was superb, especially the scallops mussles and King prawns.
M. M. P.
Very good food (great oysters and lobster, astonishing mussels, congrats to the chef), but too bad the attitude did not meet the expectations.
We were underdressed (as a matter of fact... like normal tourists 😊, in my opinion), but even if we had a reservation, we were treated like some random people that entered there by mistake.
Well... I consider that all clients must be treated the same no matter the clothes they are wearing, especially if it's a high class restaurant like Ondine.
L. B.
Service was serious but generally good, although at times a little slow. Sitting round the bar for drinks and oysters looks lovely. We had a table by the window and enjoyed oysters, fish and chips and the cooked shellfish platter. Go for the shellfish platter, a generous portion of razor clams, scallops, lobsters, mussels, cockles, clams, crab, oyster, you name it it's on there! It was absolutely delicious and well worth the money. Aside from that there are restaurants with more atmosphere, better service and a more reasonable wine list.
D. D.
The best service and amazing food, couldn't recommend it enough!!
P. M.
Good food, occasional bad service. I've been to this place quite a few times, for birthdays and other celebrations, it used to be a go to. Then over the years there has been occasions when basic hospitality was ignored, usually due to appearances of social standing and potential profitability.
That being said the food is still of good quality, if pricey. You are paying for the food, and not the dining experience. If you want the whole package then there are other, safer bets in this fine city.
J. L.
We came here on a whim and had a nice time at the oyster bar. The service was very nice and the dishes came with perfect timing. Living in Alaska I've had my share of seafood but it really was enjoyable. If you have a heavy entree it is my suggestion to end with a dessert wine as they were tasty. I recommend spending some time here.
S. R.
Great place for seafood! Oysters are fresh and mussels are unmatched.
J. B.
Amazing seafood, friendly staoand a great location
N. L.
Ondine was on my must-visit list for my trip to Edinburgh, and I was excited to get a seat for lunch. I ordered a negroni, an oyster shooter, a fish and seafood soup, and a dressed brown crab. The oyster was exceptional, and the drink excellent, so I was excited when the soup arrived. Unfortunately, the soup did not live up to my expectations; made with shellfish shells, it had not been ground or strained sufficiently, and I spend the meal removing shell bits from my mouth. The dressed crab salad had a similar problem, if less extreme. As a West Coast American, I am open to new experiences, but this was one that seemed a little too rustic to be part of the desired experience at a high end meal. Intentional or not, it left me with a dining experience that was gritty, not gourmet.
M. T.
It was ok - seafood is of good quality but I find it's overpriced considering other excellent choices in Edinburgh. I had the grilled sole, which was very fresh and nicely presented. The feel of the dining room was very corporate, and the service was good if not outstanding. But you can have a much better dinner at half the price somewhere else.
V. E. N.
Unbelievably good seafood. The waiter was funny and professional and patient with our drunkenness*
*we weren't annoyingly drunk just merry
H. S.
Celebrated my dad's 70th here. All spectacular but can't recommend the deep fried oysters highly enough! I love oysters anyway but these were delicious (and my wife who's normally not a fan couldn't get enough of them!). Service was impeccable. Attentive but not overbearing.
W. A.
I am not a huge seafood lover but really enjoyed my meal. There is a good range of food on offer but would suggest going elsewhere if you are not a seafood person. The restaurant showcases some of Scotland best produce and they truly do it justice. The seafood is extremely fresh and cooked to perfection. The place is decorated simply, classy and elegant with the service professional yet welcoming. The food is generally quite pricey but we went for their lunch set-menu, which in my eyes is always a great deal for trying out the more expensive restaurants.
M. G.
we had a very nice lunch. you will get very good seafood. I had the sirloin steak which was also very delicious. Our waiter was really nice, attentive and helpful when it comes to local questions about Edinburgh. The place itself is very modern and elegant. At desks at the window you even have a nice view at the street below since the restaurant is located at the first floor. But don't worry there is also an elevator beside the stairs. Prices aren't cheap but you will get very good food, drinks and service for it.
M. v. d. K.
The service was good and the restaurant is nicely set up. I don't think the food meets the expectations set by the pricing. There's nothing wrong with it but I think at the current price point it should have been a memorable meal. Also the reason why some dishes included sides and others didn't was not clear to me.
k. n.
Decent. Wouldn't return. Fish was cooked great but it's not enough, decor was tacky, service was not great always had to ask to be topped up. No hospitality what do ever. Waiter had no personality. A place for older folk
A. A.
Appetisers were okay. The tempura and the soup was good, however the salad and the parfait was not worth it.
Main dishes. Sole fish was tasteless and dry but the monkfish was tasty. Portions were okay and fulling.
Deserts were ok
We were left dissapointed as this was said to be the best seafood restaurant in Edinburgh. Service was quick and efficient.
Result, it was not worth the price.
L. S.
As always we had a great meal and attentive service. My starter of Loch fine oysters were creamy and plump the sole was amazing and not as the Telegraph review reported. The treacle tart was yummy! We are never disappointed by Ondine.
G.
The service was lovely, our waiter was called Hesus and was very polite, full of attention. The fish was fresh and honstly amazingly good, a little bit more expensive than what I would of expected, but as the quality is high it is understandable. I do recommend.
A. M.
Excellent service and delicious food that will leave you satisfied. No complaints whatsoever! I had the salmon, scallops and caramel chocolate mousse. All wonderful!
T. B.
All the dishes we ordered were good, especially seafood except the roast halibut with chicken mushroom dressing. Sounded a little odd but I gave it a try and while the fish itselft was good, the dressing did not really go with the fish. The food deserves 4 stars. I however have to choose 3 because of service quality.
All staff we were in contact with were fine, neither too friendly and welcoming nor unacceptable except for one lady standing at the counter at the entrance (front of the house?) dressing in black who only came over with the bills/change. With an experience of being given back the old 5 pound note which were not accepted when we tried to pay somewhere else yesterday, when being given a Scottish fiver note, we politely asked to have the current English one instead. As we are leaving Scotland tomorrow hence the wish to avoid any unnecessary things that might happen. The lady's attitude however was condescending and impolite when explaining and giving the coins to us. We did not expect this level of service quality from a place like Ondine.
B.
Small place you may miss on your pass by, however great seafood platters!
M. R.
The place to go for seafood in Edinburgh. Attentive staff with great service that is not intrusive. Wine list to match the high standard of produce served. Prices at level you might expect for this standard of cooking and presentation.
J. S. M.
When I was planning to go to Edinburgh for my birthday I was looking for a nice restaurant to try. Edinburgh has such good options that it was difficult to decide, but couldn't be more happy with the outcome. The food was great, and the shellfish platter was amazing. It has a very good variety of sea food and in definitely coming back for oysters some time. Also I must say that the atmosphere although elegant is very cosy and relaxed, perfect for a date or time out with family and friends.

Lovely restaurant. Stylish but understated. The food is great whether you want to grab a table looking over George IV bridge or sit at the bar for a more casual bite. Brilliant range of fresh seafood including an array of oysters. Great wine list. Staff are professional and attentive without being overbearing. First floor accessed through smallish entrance between Pizza Express and the Hotel. Well worth a visit.
L. P.
Loved the experience. Fantastic food and great service. Would really recommend this restaurant.
D. T.
The restaurant has a great atmosphere and the service was good. Quality of the seafood is excellent but some dishes are way overpriced with very small portions! Some of us were left feeling hungry but with a sizeable bill!
a. c.
Surrounded by scaffolding at the moment. Bit of a shame on a sunny lunchtime but don't let that put you off. Fish and shellfish the main event. Oysters, lobster, sancerre. Hard to beat.
M. M.
Oyster happy hour is a great idea! Brilliant service from friendly and curtious staff. The seafood is some of the best I have ever eaten, we have dined here on a few occasions and we can't praise this place enough! It's pricey but you Defo get what you've pay for.
See you all again soon!!

I have eaten here a few times. Fabulous oysters lovely atmosphere. Definitely a need to book. Very nice sea food in a fab setting.
K. S.
From the minute I stepped inside Ondine I knew I was in somewhere special. The staff were attentive yet I hardly knew they were there. The food was amazing. Simply amazing. I had fish, because let's face it if you go to somewhere that's famous for fish and don't eat fish, you're maybe odd. I'm not (that) odd. Despite not being a big fish eater, it was amazing. (did I use that word again?) Every course was well presented and tasted yum. I've dined here in couples and with a large group and service was still effortless. Go for a special occasion, and have fish.
S. H.
Seafood specialist restaurant. A real experience.
Elegant modern environment.
Attentive unobtrusive service.
Excellent range of food all beautifully presented.
Whole party delighted.
Booking advised. Half price oysters between 5:30 and 6!
L. B.
Such amazing seafood, very impressive!
S. M.
Food and drink good if pricey. But very noisy; hard furnishings and decor means loud background noise, we could not hear waiter nor could he hear us. We were a party of four hoping to chat but unable to have general conversation and only able to talk to person opposite by lip reading. Some curtains or soft furnishings would help. Wouldn't go back.
V. M.
The food is delicious, the chef fully deserves 5 stars. However, be prepared for poor service and check your bill carefully. We were initially charged for a bottle of dessert wine instead of a glass (£21 difference). This mistake was too convenient to be accidental: the woman had the wine, the man is paying, chances are he would prefer not to argue... Other blunders included toppling a cocktail glass while serving the food; providing plates for a shared starter and cutlery for the main course only upon request; placing knives, forks and spoons on either side of the table at the waiters' convenience; bringing spoons with a dessert that obviously needed a fork. Finally, as we came for our raincoats, we were asked by a very busy man where we'd been sitting. How can you answer this question in a large restaurant? A simple 'My colleague will be with you in a moment' would have sufficed, thank you!
K. P.
Love the food, love the atmosphere. The staff are very helpful and positive bar one who would not check with the chef if he could oblige a request. He knows who he is.
K. M.
Fantastic oysters at happy hour - been a few times now and have been a happy chappy. Not rated a full five stars because - let's be honest, outside of their special offers, the place is massively overpriced.
R. G.
Totally amazing seafood. Not the cheapest but lovely surroundings and excellent quality, can't fault it. Not great for kids but the staff are very accommodating where they can be. If you don't like fish then don't bother going here as there is little else on the menu!
M. Y.
Great Seafood Restaurant in convenient location, just next to the Royal Mile.
Chef Roy Brett sources the best and freshest seafood from around Scotland. Seafood is Scotland's second largest export after whisky, and from the amazing dishes in offer at Ondine, you can really appreciate why.
Chef Roy and his team are really friendly and offer great service. You really feel that they care about the guests having a great dining experience.
S.
Very pleasant, great for £1 oysters (albeit quite small ones) at happy hour from 1730hrs.
E. T.
Amazing seafood and dining experience. Lovely staff and chilled setting. Only issue was the size of the food! if you are getting the seafood platter to share, i'd advise not getting starters!
C. S.
Despite being irritated by having to wait 20 minutes passed our reservation time to be seated, we were glad to have dined at Ondine. It was a fantastic meal to end our 10 day trip to Scotland. The food was amazing. The Lobster Thermidor was amazing and creamy, the Scallops were perfectly cooked (but the accompanying sausages were neither good nor necessary), the Oysters (Fine de Claire) were fresh and tasty, the Sea Bass Ceviche was refreshing, and all the sides were great. The service left a bit to be desired. Aside from not being able to ready our table, despite having made the reservation weeks in advance, our waiter seemed irritated when I asked if he would describe the oysters. He reluctantly described two of the five and so we just selected one of those. If you're craving a fantastic seafood meal, then Ondine is definitely worth a visit.
E. O.
Lovely seafood. Turbot was perfectly cooked with a surprising spinach puree. Service was ok, could've been more personable /attentive.
a. m.
Excellent fish restaurant serving imaginative and traditional dishes and it has an excellent wine list. If you walked in here by accident, instead of Pizza Express downstairs, you might by shocked by the bill though!! Great place!
P. A.
Visited for Brunch. The lobster sandwich was very nice, also had some oysters which were great as well, the staff were attentive and friendly I would like to visit again to try the evening menu.
S. C.
Went for dinner with my wife with a £50 voucher. Spent a further £80 with no complaints as the food, wine and service was impeccable. Crab starter nice, but my word the grilled halibut main was perfectly cooked - clearly these guys are known for seafood for a reason. The wine, a pleasant gavi di gavi, complemented the food nicely. The utterly decadent rum and raisin ice cream with chilled Pedro ximinez desert nearly had me unable to stand. A truly special experience.
M. C.
I chose Ondine based on the fact they offered Mouclade, a mussels recipe from the Charente-Maritime region of France.
The service was impeccable and attentive, ensuring drinks were topped up and everything available as needed.
Sadly, the food fell short. I did mention the issues with the waiter, who very kindly discounted my bill, but there were points that needed to be addressed - the curry powder was not properly blended in the Mouclade, and the cheese for dessert could have been cut so that there were no dry edges.
M. S. M.
Great seafood (both the risotto and the mussels were delicious) service impeccable and with two delicious chocolates offered to end our dinner. Highly recommended.
L. L.
Absolutely fantastic food. We had the large shellfish platter which came with an overwhelming quantity of the most fantastic lobster, crab, scallops, mussels, clams, spoots etc. I cant stress enough how fresh and wonderful tasting the shellfish was. The star of the show, however, was one of our starters - the humble fish soup. It was a mouthwateringly luxurious soup, rich in fish and shellfish flavours, perfectly balanced with tomato, garlic in the rouille and gruyere cheese. I have had a fair few fish soups/bisques in my life and I can honestly say this won hands down. Worth a trip to Edinburgh just for Ondine's fish soup!!
Y. G.
Oysters were good but they had a 12 oysters per person limit for the oyster happy hour which I found a little disappointing. The mussels were really tasty and the ceviche oysters were awesome!
E. L.
Delicious roasted seafood platter for two and interesting choice of cocktails - I enjoyed the Botanical Gimlet (gin and coriander!) very much. The only let down was the overpriced side dishes.
W.
This was the best dining experience I've ever had. The service was impeccable and the food divine. If I could afford it, I'd be here every week!
M. A.
Fantastic food and service! The Lobster Thermadore and grilled scallops were unbelievable
M. O.
I feel like I need to go through all my previous reviews and reduce them to 4 stars after going to Ondine. It's not that they're not good, its just that Ondine is in a league of its own. Saying that, you have to like seafood. I would say love, but they will convert you after having one of their meals. The seafood is amazing in Scotland and they truly do it justice. The seafood is extremely fresh and the flavours delicate, and extremely well matched and balanced. The décor is simple, classy and elegant with the service professional yet welcoming. We went for their lunch set-menu, which in my eyes is always a great deal for trying out the more expensive restaurants. Adding a couple pounds brings the quality from bistro-pub to gastro-ingenuity at £16.95 for two courses. I had the smoked haddock and culcannon, topped with a poached duck egg, which was perfectly cooked and truly satisfied my taste pallete. We also had cocktails with our meals and they were just delicious. All in all an amazing experience, highly recommended and will definitely be a hit with anyone who likes seafood.
J. D.
Thoroughly enjoyed the meal. Did think the service was a bit slow.
g. m.
Confess to eating here regularly but that is because it is so good and never disappointed. Fantastic food and staff, Would recommend to all. i use it for business meals, meals with friends, and my wife and I enjoy a night out sitting at the Oyster bar.
My restaurant of choice
K. A.
Great food, but a bit too noisy. Not the place for a romantic love dinner, that is. The staff was helpful but seemed very stressed.
R. D.
This is a fantastic restaurant for the seafood lover. From the moment you enter the restaurant you feel special with extremely attentive staff. The food is glorious, albeit very expensive. If you want to have a special occasion and enjoy the fruits of the sea then you won't go wrong with Ondine!
M. C.
Best fine dining seafood experience on the city. Great wine list. Attentive staff. The prices reflect the incredible experience and service you will receive.
n. h.
Ondine just needs to relax. The food is pretty good on the set menu but not outstanding. I was a little disappointed by the lack of fish options available and the pudding was average.
I might go back, but given the huge range of alternatives, and the hefty bill - I may be some time.
E. Y.
Best oyster happy hour , great oysters
Service can be good or horrendous
(depends on which staff is behind the bar ) .
Be aware they charge service charge , a little unorthodox for sitting at the bar for happy hour oyster .
s.
A very enjoyable lunch.
E. M.
First Class food. Fresh and delicious. Beautiful Sea food restaurant. Staff are lovely. Couldn't do enough for my friends and I. Fabulous experience
I. D.
From arriving to leaving service could not be better. Made to feel so welcome. Food was of the highest quality and a very good wine list to choice from. Can't wait to return
C.
Fantastic food, would thoroughly recommend! Not a bad word to say about the whole experience. Staff were friendly, helpful and extremely attentive. Food was fresh and delicious.
V. P.
Excellent quality of sea food. Very good wines. Friendly staff. But...some dishes expensive. £30 for 4 scallops!
M. T.
One of the best seafood meals you can have. And I've had a lot!
G. B.
Awsome food, genial servis. Enjoyed a lot
M. C.
We've just had a really nice evening here. Food excellent and staff on top form aswell. Would thoroughly recommend this place .We have done most of the top restaurants in Edinburgh and this is in the top 3.

k. m.
Amazing place! I had the Roasted Shellfish platter. It was huge and the sauce... Omg the sauce!! So good and the staff was awesome! Definitely will go there again!
B. D.
Everything was amazing: the place, the food, the service. I took the Turbot Hollandaise (my first time trying this fish) and it was a very nice discovery. I would definitely recommend it.
A. D.
Amazing service. Obviously it is quite pricey but great for a special occasion. The staff are really nice and you definitely are paying for quality seafood!
J. T.
Great seafood, extremely fresh with good customer service. A slight nitpick is that the acoustics aren't great so if it's busy you might have a hard time conversing at your table
R. K.
Classy seafood restaurant with great food. Excellent selection of wine too. Though some of the food portions could be bigger given the prices!
M. P.
First class seafood restaurant. Incredible oyster and shellfish options and top notch service as well. Good place for a date night that'll impress your other half.
J. J.
Perhaps the best seafood restaurant I've been too. Staff are great. Food is pricey but well worth it for seafood aficionados.
E. C.
Great quality sea food, sourced locally. Very friendly and professional staff. Highly recommended for fine dining.
D.
A fabulous restaurant if you like sea food, and I do.
Good view of the street too, which is great for people watching!
Nice bar area for pre-dinner drinks or a less formal meal.
J. P.
The food was excellent and the young staff were very knowledgeable and attentive
J. P.
While the dining room commands enviable views of the Royal Mile and George IV Bridge, this seafood restaurant's dishes lack distinction, portions are somewhat miserly, and prices are overambitious.
E. K.
Amazing food! Went for the oyster happy hour where oysters are £1.....THEY. WERE. AMAZING! Staff very helpful and friendly.
O. B.
We visited this seafood restaurant for lunch. The food was very nice, staff were kind and we liked the decor.

(Translated) Compared with white horse, there are fewer types of oysters (only one type), and the taste is less crispy, but soft and waxy. It's a little bigger, but the taste is lacking. The same variety of Loch Fyne, when the white horse was first eaten, fell in love with it, and was amazed by its deliciousness and rich taste. I came here with expectations, but I felt that there were two concepts , Can't compare. The good thing is that it has two types of cooked oysters, both of which are breaded and fried. Japanese tempura and western bread flour fried with wasabi mayonnaise. But if you like fried oysters, you might as well go to Shengbodian, which can also be served with ramen. , And come to eat raw oysters. Other parts have nothing to do, service is average, friendly but slow, and the environment is beautiful and comfortable.

(Translated) Attracted by the myriad of positive reviews, I go to try Ondine, a modern restaurant in the Old Town. I state that I am not a lover of oysters, so I could actually have missed the main dish of the place. Unfortunately, what I tried didn't satisfy me: the gazpacho, offered as a starter in the lunch menu, was tiny. The risotto with cuttlefish ink was above all too al dente and in a ridiculous portion, I exaggerate when I say that there were 50 g. The disproportionate cost has no help. Probably a very good oyster bar that does not deserve attention for the rest.

(Translated) A restaurant without infamy or praise. Evidence of Masterchef but the results are not for the positive. Shrimps and angus only know of spices used to prepare the dishes. And it's a shame because the ingredients are excellent at the start.

(Translated) Very trendy and popular ... be careful when booking, although eating at the bar is also very good. The food focused on the sea is very well presented and of a very good quality. Friendly service. A downside, the wallet makes a little grimace ...

Très branché et prisé... attention à la reservation, quoique manger au bar est très bien aussi. La nourriture axée sur la mer est très bien présentée et de très bonne qualité. Service sympa. Un bémol, le porte monnaie fait un peu la grimace...

(Translated) Hot shellfish platter+white wine=good afternoon
This platter is hot and the taste is very oriental. The sauce is delicious with vanilla sauce. Another seafood platter is fruit sea. It is all ice. This is not suitable for winter in Edinburgh... it is too cold.
To be honest, the oysters are a bit awkward but the scallops and lobsters are really awkward! Paired with 2017 Spanish white wine yammy!

hot shellfish platter+white wine=good afternoon

(Translated) Very good restaurant but still very expensive. The fish excellent but served without any garnish. We would have liked some vegetables.

Très bon restaurant mais quand même très cher. Le poisson excellent mais servi sans aucune garniture. On aurait aimé quelques légumes.

(Translated) We booked a little late for my birthday dinner. The staff was very kind and level. We ate the fish plateau, an excellent side dish of cabbage, wine and a dessert. The fish was really good and abundant. Altino price but that's okay.
