Reviews of The Mussel and Steak Bar

Perfect. Oysters. Mussels. Steak. Pasta. Everything was perfect. There are a surprising amount of tables available, but has a small diner feel. Super friendly staff and very helpful and accommodating. Mussel and Steak Surf and Turf with whiskey bacon sauce was amazing. Seafood linguine was good, surprisingly large portion. Queens scallops were SO GOOD. YOU MUST ORDER THEM.
L. P.
A lovely place with great staff! There were complimentary oysters which were delicious. We had a haggis starter to kick off our trip followed by a generous portion of mussels and chips. Really great food here with fantastic service. I would come here again!
J. K. K.
Lunch menu is good deal. They gave taste oysters, it was really nice and fresh. I ordered 6 more oysters. Fillet steak is also good. Mussels with white source is also good.
P. M.
I loved my mussels, I went for garlic in chill, the spice was great for my pallet. My husband enjoyed his pork steak, mussel in Bacon was yummy too. Nice local beer and cider

My man and I came for a “meet again after a long period of separation” dinner and it was simply sublime. The best dinner ever in UK! Big THANKS to Marshall 😘
Surprising amount of tables available, but has a small diner feel. Staffs were also very sweet, helpful and accommodating.
To start, we had champagne with “Handpicked Oyster (12 pieces)” were fresh! And “Grilled Scottish Mussels” was astonished by the portion size, almost half a kilo of beautiful fresh mussels in a gorgeous white wine, cream and shallot sauce. The sauce was perfect and delicious, my man even finished all of it as soup.
All of these were beautifully presented and delicious.
Three huge and delicious “XL Langoustines “ were very first time for me to try this, luckily I got my man to help otherwise I’d really hated to eat something with outer shell 😂 and a phenomenal “Tomahawk Ribeye Steak” that was cooked perfect! We got so full and extremely satisfied with all of meals.
A super delicious dessert “Knickerbocker Glory” for happy ending of the night.
Our service were attentive and lovely, and we both thought the decor and atmosphere was spot on.
All in all, one of our favourite meals we've ever had. Thank you all!!!
This is a must try restaurant and you will be regret if you don’t come once you come to Edinburgh.

My partner and I came for a valentine's dinner and it was simply sublime. I had the surf and turf and was astonished by the portion size, almost half a kilo of beautiful fresh mussels in a gorgeous white wine, cream and shallot sauce, two huge and delicious crevettes and a phenomenal 8oz ribeye that was cooked to perfection. My partner had a kilo of mussels and she was delighted with her meal too!
To start, we had queen scallops to share and these were beautifully presented and delicious. We were also given a complimentary oyster each which was really appreciated.
Our servers were attentive and lovely and we both thought the decor and atmosphere was spot on.
All in all, one of our favourite meals we've ever had. Thank you!

Compared to other restaurants in the Grassmarket District, their exterior seems a bit underwhelming. That’s merely a facade, however; my experience here was a highlight from our trip, and I truly recommend prioritizing them as a dining option on your visit to Edinburgh. My fiancé ordered the steak and mussels and thoroughly enjoyed both, whereas I ordered the beer battered fish and chips (undoubtedly the best I had on our stay) and received a generous portion, as depicted in the photo. If you haven’t visited The Mussel and Steak Bar yet, please do!!

Very nice place. The mussels are just perfect, though some croutons would be highly appreciated. It is better to book a table in advance. Huge dessert nice for two.

Best meal out in Edinburgh. We ate delicious seafood here which was fresh, tasty and very well priced. The cured salmon was perfect, with flavours of beetroot coming through. The Cullen Skink was a hearty, warming soup with a lot of flavour. Then the star of the evening, the seafood platter! Huge crevettes, scallops, mussels, clams... and all in a delicious sauce. Great service from the friendly staff too. I would recommend booking a table here for a taste of Scottish seafood!

Pearl in the heart of Edinburgh. Incredibly delicious food, cozy atmosphere and wonderful staff. I highly recommend, the restaurant is only for connoisseurs of refined taste.
k. k.
Very nice friendly staff, and meals were lovely as well. Although the smoked haddock Chowder was a tad bit salty, in my opinion.
The queen scallops, mussels, and crevettes were all very tasty.
A. D.
Perfectly Splendid 😍😘😍
First time try Oysters,(next day first time Scallops and Mussels) loved so much, food was delicious... Service was also professional and happy to help. Worth of waiting and any price. Fully recommended. Coming back there thre time in a row ❤️❤️
Big Thank you, for sarvice and nice chat with the owner.
Definitely come back on any next trip to Edinburgh.
J. R.
A wonderful place for sea food lovers to enjoy a fresh and good quality food!
Owner and other members of staff were very professional, attentative to details. 5 star service!! Felt very welcoming.
Had lobsters, mussels, oysters and scallops! Everything was devine.
Thank you Marshall and the team for making our dining experience memorable!
Highly recommended.
Warm regards from London 🙂
B. T.
Amazing meal, the quality of the seafood and steaks was perfect, it was the best meal we had all week. Will come back to Edinburgh just to come here again!
B. V.
The haggis wellington with the whiskey sauce is simply to die for! Not to mention the sticky toffee ❤️❤️❤️ I highly recommend to anyone coming to Edinburgh 🥰 and this was having it all delivered.

There's not much more to add that the other reviewers haven't already said. My uncle and I enjoyed our steaks and mussels at lunch so much that we opted to return for dinner the same day. The salmon starter was delicious.
However, the true highlight of the restaurant is the staff. The restaurant was very busy, but Daniel and the rest of the staff worked tirelessly to accommodate everyone without complaint and even found a way to engage us on a personal level. Just an all around exceptional dining experience. It may be a couple of years before I get back to Edinburgh, but I will certainly make my way back to The Mussel and Steak Bar when I do.
M.
Wow, absolutely amazing. So glad we booked in advance to reserve a table as it was very busy. Food amazing, staff welcoming and friendly. Ordered seafood platter and it didn't disappoint. Will definitely go back there the next time we are in Edinburgh.
M. A.
The best Haggis i have ever tasted! and the salmon......OMG :) the service was friendly, prompt, and attentive. Very good value for money.
M. S.
Fresh oysters and mussles. Delicious! The pork steak was also tasty but must admit the seafood was Devine. We were a bit unsure but Juan recommended the mussle and steak option which was just perfection (and a bottle of pinto grigio which made things even better)
Will recommend for sure!
V. C.
Superb mussel, seafood & steak restaurant!
We had 6 meaty oysters for starters (from Loch Fyne), followed by delicious mussels (one bucket with whiskey, bacon & cream sauce, the other white wine & shallots & cream). We chose King scallops & chips in beef dripping! to accompany the meal. Would visit again!
R. P.
We booked to have dinner here at relatively short notice, but the staff were really welcoming and friendly (the complementary oyster on arrival was a lovely touch) and the food was hot, fresh, and fantastic. The venue is right at the bottom of Victoria Street so is very handy to get to after a day in Edinburgh city too. We will be coming again!
A. O.
We tried a couple of restaurants as we recently visited Edinburgh but we had one of the best experiences here. The food was delicious, especially the whole sea bass with pearl couscous which I truly enjoyed. I also have to mention that the service was on point and we'll visit again during our next trip to Scotland.
P. G.
Location was great, quick, and easy. Service was good tho they seemed overwhelmed at times. We waited almost 90 mins for our main course, however we did get oysters which made it a little bit better. Our waiter Duncan did a fantastic job, but we could tell he was overworked and possibly not paid enough to do what he was capable of. Ramen for the wife was great, however my steak even tho cooked good was bland and cold on the outside. Great place tho and we do intend to stop by again soon to give it another try maybe they had a rough day. I will always give a second chance and hope for the best!!
L. M.
Went past this place numerous times and we decided to give it a go last night. Restaurant was welcoming and cosy. Daniel, who was our server, offered us a sample of some oysters to begin with which was a nice touch! We had scallops, Cullen skink, fish and chips and seafood linguine. All of it tasted amazing and the service was great. Recommend 👍
A. S.
Brilliant seafood linguini + white wine. Friendly staff and fast service.
J. J.
Everyone is super enthusiastic! The service attitude is also very good! Oysters are fresh and delicious! Steak and mussels are also delicious!
Y. L.
An absolutely amazing place to get your seafood fix! Food is delicious and reasonably priced not only that the service is fantastic too! Definitely a must visit when in Edinburgh
A. B.
Fresh mussels and great food.
Was only one spice i didint like it i think was finocchio seeds, and i think that the chef put a bit to much.
I really loved the rest of the food, generous plates and good wine.
Very good service, friendly and nice and clean.
Is a expirience that for sure we gonna repeat.
Need to try.
K. K.
Great food and incredible service! Was served 2 juicy fresh oysters on the house after a cold day outside Victoria Street. Ordered a 8oz pork loin and a 1/2 kilo Scottish mussels drowned in whisky, smoked bacon and cream sauce. The pork loins was good with just the right amount of tenderness. But the Star was the mussels that were really good! It’s something that anyone should order if they visit this place!
F. C.
The food and service where fantastic 👌 best Surf & Turf I have ever had 👍
The seafood platter my wife had was fantastic also. 5 stars all the way...👍
H. B.
Excellent seafood.
We were tired the evening we arrived in Edinburgh. Luckily our rented apartment was just a five minute walk from here. When we arrived there was a line of three parties ahead of us but the party in front of us had eaten here the evening before and came back for more (!), so we stuck it out.
It was a packed house and reservations were also coming in, so we ended up sharing a larger table with the returning party. They both had the sea bass which looked wonderful. We had steak, oysters and mussels with garlic and wine. They were all delicious! Seafood is one of our favorites and the mussels are the best I have ever had. The service was efficient for the crowd. Excellent selection of wine and spirits as well.
We made reservations for the next evening on our way out (there was still a line of people waiting). The following evening our reservations were early and we sat on the second floor, which we didn't even realize existed the night before. We ordered salmon, chili lime mussels and a steamed seafood platter. Service and food were excellent.
Things to consider: this place is not Red Lobster or a chain or inexpensive. We liked the quality of the food and I felt it reflected the price. The seafood shines. Our entrees were not over salted, over seasoned or drowned in sauces. Expect to16 to 21 English pounds for general entrees - more for lobster or steak. This is a casual place, without an overly fake fancy feel and we loved the food, so would eat here again.
If you like fresh seafood in a casual atmosphere you won't be disappointed.
N. M.
Great place had a lovely birthday meal for my wife, the seafood was excellent, piping hot and delicious. Service was excellent and with a smile. Will visit again without hesitation.
K. W.
Good food and good service. Oyster is definitely best.
A. A.
Amazing place for locally sourced seafood but what we love the most about this place is the staff are very kind and thoughtful. We were a walk-in on a Friday night, and they still managed to squeeze us in. Thank you 🙏
M. F.
I had my favorite meal of the past year here. The salmon dish is to die for. The fish was flavorful and tender and the vegetables it was served with were cooked to perfection and delicious. Would also highly recommend the white chocolate Bailey’s cheesecake. I was eating alone and the staff were very attentive and friendly with me all evening. If I was staying in Edinburgh for more than one night I would definitely go again!
S. G.
What a lovely place the food was amazing, and the staff Really friendly, would like to go back 😀
M. M.
Amazing steak would definitely recomend
J. T.
Loved everything I ate. The restaurant is small and simple with great music and great service. The soup was outstanding and the haggis Wellington with whiskey sauce was incredible. I also had the mussels which were also very good. I highly recommend this restaurant
G. Y.
The Salmon was excellent and the Cesar Salad with smoked salmon was divine. The restaurant was clean with friendly & quick service. We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner.
V. Y.
One of the best meals I've had in a long time. Amazing food and brilliant service. Highly recommended
M. H.
Pretty nice but expensive and small. The special crab looked good, but the steak was slightly above average.
A. L.
We had our anniversary dinner here. Delicious food and friendly staff. Good sticky toffee pudding!
K. S.
Lovely food and service as always. My fave place for mussels and was delighted with the new haggis wellington starter!
S. S.
The best lobster I've ever had, amazing chips and the mussels in smoked bacon whiskey sauce were just perfect 👌
M. B.
Very busy place with top quality seafood. You will pay about £20 per head, but the servings are very generous, so it works out well. Good range of beers and wines. Highly recommended.
D. M. B.
The place is definitely informal, but the quality of food is extremely nice. I got a steamed Scottish platter and it was amazing. The staff really taking care of you. Just do not take the bread&butter as a side, not worth it. Victoria Street is a really nice place to walk your dinner away
V. S.
The best seafood platter I've ever had. My fiancee had the fillet steak and said its the best he's ever tasted. The staff are warm and friendly, the whole experience was so good we booked again before we went home. Absolutely excellent
R. S.
Came here on our last night in Ediburgh after being recommended from a food tour guide the previous day.
I highly recommend that you go here if you are ever in Edinburgh and love sea food. The place although small inside is cozy along with friendly staff that are really knowledgable about the menu.
If you do come here I recommend that you have a big apetite as the portions can be big but the food is really tastey.
Thank you for an enjoyable night.
J. C.
1st day in Edinburgh, had the most heart warming dinner here after a long day of traveling. The staffs were really friendly and fun, dishes were just cooked to perfection. Highly recommended :)
M. G.
I had the lobster it was delicious. I will definately go back when I return to Edinburgh!
E. S.
Had the smoked salmon starter which was fantastic. Followed it up with the seafood platter which was the best seafood I have eaten outside of Indonesia. My seafood loving girlfriend said similar, ranking it up with Singaporean Chilli Crab. This place is definitely worth a visit for just the platter.
On top of all that the staff were extremely helpful and attentive. Made the experience all that much better.
c. c.
10 stars !!!!!! A quaint little place but the food is beyond superb !!!! We had oysters, super fresh and huge !!! Even got complimentary ones. Had the shellfish platter and the pork ribs , both fantastic !!! Fall of the bone and tasty and shellfish were all cooked well. Highly recommended !!! Will come back over and over again
G. A.
Cozy atmosphere and great variety of meals. Seafood is very fresh.
The kitchen has a break from 3pm to 5pm.
M. H.
We had the steak and mussel surf and turf and it was not only utterly delicious but the service was superb. They care and that's the best thing you can say about a restaurant.
J. L.
Amazing amazing amazing!
Great food, great cocktails and even better service! And for such a big table on such a busy night aswell, cannot recommend enough!
A. S.
Had the largest crab I had ever had! Very messy eating but well worth the effort.
m. l.
Excellent food great service can't ask for more
N. R.
Excellent! Exactly what we needed after a long day sightseeing. Staff were wonderful and the food, delicious! Highly recommend 👏👏
M. P.
Absolutely delicious food. Very friendly I would advise you to book in advance as it can be very busy.
T. R.
Great food, generous portions and steak was cooked wonderfully.
Staff were friendly and provided great service
M. D.
I had the 'surf and turf' which consisted of a perfectly cooked and seasoned steak (and trust me, I'm fussy about that) and a bowl of delicious mussels with a couple crevettes, and a side of beef dripping chips. It was fantastic. Coming from London I'm no stranger to good food but this was seriously toe curlingly good. 11/10
J. H.
Really good food, god price, ok service . I recommend this place , specially if you are a sea food lover. For 130£ for 2 you have a really good dinner , 3 courses and drinks!
C. H.
The boss was really generous and hospitable! Complimentary oyster per person as well as a full plate of langoustine as starters were a very pleasant surprise. Food is good and service was even better. Highly recommended!
N.
I would highly recommend for anyone visiting Edinburgh. Seafood and steak were very good and good portions. Good selection of food and very attentive staff. Just a short walk from Edinburgh castle and Royal mile.
G. T.
Friendly service. Had a 1kg pot of mussels whilst my husband had the surf and turf. Enjoyed the meal.
O. W.
Had haggis Wellington to start which for a yorkshire man was quite novel, however the whiskey sauce tasted a little cheesy. Steak was cooked to perfection and staff service was average. Moderately priced
J. R.
Very nice, cozy place. The mussels were outstanding. Pleasantly surprised to see picanha on the menu. It was fantastic. Really enjoyed the whiskey sauce. Place is quite small so make a reservation if you want a guaranteed table. Friendly staff as well. If you're in the Grassmarket area, definitely stop by for dinner. You won't be disappointed.
M. F.
Food here is amazing, staff were very accommodating
J. H.
Great food and quick service. Perfect restaurant
G. B. A.
A beautiful little restaurant, with amazing staff and delicious food.
I would definitely recommend it for someone visiting Edinburgh and wanting good, tasty and fresh food!
M. C.
Good service, good food, prices are okay for this area. Although the customers can be a little bit too noisy in touristy places like this, as one would expect, overall, it is not too bad.
A. M.
What an incredible meal last night, everything was delicious and the service was excellent.
J. B.
Absolutely wonderful in every way. Amazing staff, so lovely, and they work so hard..Amazing food, the best surf & turf I’ve ever had and the steak was cooked perfectly, exactly how I ordered it.
10/10 to these guys. We will definitely be back when in Edinburgh again next year..A massive thanks to you all .
g. s.
Thought I purchased the smallest meal out of our group, turned out to be the biggest. Tasted as good as it looked and I struggled to finish, well impressed.
H. S. o. S. S. B. T. W.
Very good seafood but a little expensive. Therefore, we recommend going for lunch, as they offer some great lunch deals! Also recommended in our blog post about Edinburgh :)
M. W.
I was looking for a place to satisfy my carnal seafood-eating instinct and this place did the job: no posh ambiance "surcharge", just fresh seafood with tasty spice and huge portions. I had the seafood. The Shellfish Platter costs £25 but that is sufficient for 2 people to share. The mussels taste fresh, no "bloody odour" associated with shellfish. The broth taste herby but not too much, kind of like a fusion of western and Thai. No wonder it's full on Monday night with both locals and tourists, both Caucasians and Asians
C. H.
Great meal. Went with adult kids, & we all had a fantastic time!
C. H. L.
Shellfish platter was outstanding, so was the pan seared scallops
P. T.
First time in Edinburgh!
What attracted us to this restaurant was the mouth watering smell of the garlic and white wine mussels.
Very welcoming, easy going staff and owner; we had mussels in garlic, wine and cream and linguine with crustaceans, mussels and clams! The balance between spices and the sauce was so good it’s impossible to describe! An interesting blend of European and oriental flavours with the high quality of Scottish seafood!
A kind touch from the cinese lady (maybe the owner?) of an oyster as a gift!!!
Would I go back??? Of course! Without saying!!! From two Italians living in the Republic of Ireland!
J. W.
My friend recommended this place and neither him nor them let us down. The food was excellent quality, lovely atmosphere and we had a brilliant time
P. D.
Excellent seafood platter with wine friendly staff and quick service you can also see the kitchen which looks clean highly recommended
S. W.
Great Service and great food a bit expensive compared with other restaurants.
C. D.
Fabulous food and fantastic staff. Highly recommend 👌🏻
T. B.
Visited this two other mates who come from Edinburgh must admit mussels and steak and drink is a leathal combo. great food maybe it was wine. Just lets say we had a great time good staff and service would go back for more.
C. M.
I went there for lunch with my family, there is a two-course or three-course lunch menu. The portion of the mussels is smaller than I thought, but the sauce tastes really good with the mussels. And the staff are friendly.
E. C.
Awesome place for friends gathering, great location and food, nice boss and friendly staff!
J. S.
Excellent. The chips were crisp and salty. The mussels were also excellent. I would recommend the chilli and garlic mussels. They do have a kick, but the chilli's used are fresh.
J. W.
Amazing seafood platter! Very nice staff!
R. J.
Our go to when in Edinburgh. Just great food. Spend a lot or not, quality is never compromised. Go on give it a try!!
M. W.
Amazing restaurant, great staff and the seafood is as good as it gets, will be back again.
M. J.
Food was okay and the free oyster was nice but WAY too expensive for what it is
C. M.
Food was delicious and service was amazing. Would go again
M.
The oysters and Surf and Turf were amazing, as was the service. Where it was let down was the fish batter was slightly undercooked and the little touches such as the gents having no toilet paper or paper hand towels, which you wouldn't expect when you're there for opening time.
A. C.
Real good locally collected mussels, cooked at your choice (4 options). I particularly enjoyed local beer they had. The staff is incredibly potite and helpful, part of Edinburgh charm.
P. G.
Amazing place thanks to our walking tour guide for recommendations. I had pork chop and whisky sauce yummy .
S. T.
Beautiful food in a great setting. Very good service and a definite place to come back, what a superb find No1 restaurant in Edinburgh
L. M.
We had the haggis, oysters, chili garlic muscles and chicken ramen and all were five stars!
C. H.
The boss was really generous and hospitable! Complimentary oyster per person as well as a full plate of langoustine as starters were a very pleasant surprise. Food is good and service was even better. Highly recommended!

Great service, great meal, loved it.

Food is very and staff are friendly. But everything is overpriced.

My husband and i had a beautiful meal here, he had queen scollaps starter and seafood platter main, i had chilli and sweet potato soup and fillet steak, i must say it was one of the best meals weve had in a long time, would definitely recommend it x x
M. H.
A real gem of a restaurant in Edinburgh’s Grassmarket. Best seafood in Edinburgh combined with excellent attentive service. Can’t wait to try the steak after working through all the seafood options - Looks awesome!
B. S.
We've enjoyed lunch on a lovely Saturday visit to Edinburgh.
Luckily, we've managed to table without prior reservation. Food is delicious and cooked to perfection.
For two of us we've ordered 6 Oysters, Queen Scallops and a kilo pot of Shetland Mussels. All of this washed down with a couple of glasses of nice white wine.
Lovely meal from the start to the very end - well recommended.
M. L.
It was so delicious, I went twice in two days!
I highly recommend this restaurant for its food, friendliness, and owner! Extremely nice man.
They accept Alipay and WeChat Pay which is a huge plus

Great steaks. Nice staff!
R. M.
Mussels and steak both superb - service was great.
A. O.
Really friendly staff made us feel welcome and the food was exceptional. We ordered mussels, linguini and spicy ribs, all were excellent.
E.
Incredible food and service, with oysters on the house to try for the first time. Staff were friendly, helpful and food was perfect.
S. T.
Beautiful food in a great setting. Very good service and a definite place to come back, what a superb find No1 restaurant in Edinburgh
l. g.
Service excellent, staff very pleasant and the food was superb and highly recommend . The best meal we have had in years.Thankyou.
s. m.
Mussels were the best I've had in a very long time. Other half had a fillet steak which was cooked perfectly to his liking. Shared a nice bottle of reasonably priced wine. Even though it was the middle of the Edinburgh festival and they were extremely busy the service was spot on. Worth a visit.
M. C.
Great atmosphere and service. Food was great but a little bland for my taste. Very good quality though
T. M.
Of the three restaurants we visited in Edinburgh, this was far the best. Not only is the food extremely good, but the service is friendly and the venue have a good atmosphere.
I had "Mussel & Steak Surf and Turf" - the best I have ever had! Others had had mussels and beefs and all were very happy with the choices.
If you can, book a table, as there were a queue all the time we stayed at the restaurant.
G. A.
GREAT food, eclectic menu, cozy ambience, polite staff, and Marshall's jolly nature is what makes Mussels and Steak Bar a gem in the historic Grassmarket Edinburgh.
M. B.
Fantastic restaurant, great food and great atmosphere. The staff are polite, helpful and attentive even at there busiest periods. I would advise ringing to reserve a place as while we sat and ate at least 5 parties who hadn't reserved were turned away.
I had the queen scallops for starts and the surf and turf for main, they even did my steak blue to perfection. The girlfriend had crab cakes for starts (caution the sauce is hot) and the seafood platter for main. Not one single complaint.
S. J.
So lovely! Great staff. So friendly. Had a lovely chat with one or two of them as I went alone and sat by the bar. Yummy food.
C. W.
Love the freshness and excellent taste of the food
A. J.
Excellent food and service.
I highly recommend eating here.
S. W.
Best place for mussel and steak... must try the mussel with white wine sauce its awesome
G. T.
Seems to be trying too hard. Service was excellent but my starter was bland (queen scallops) they were cooked well but lacked any other flavour.
Main course was a bit better. (rib-eye steak) but was let down by the mayo arriving in little plastic pots like you get at a kebab shop... they have plenty of fancy plates and servers but use plastic pots for this? The bill was similar to what I paid in a far better restaurant last night. Not overly impressed.
L. M.
We had the haggis, oysters, chili garlic muscles and chicken ramen and all were five stars!
A. M.
Great food, nice service, fillet probably the best steak (nicely aged) and enjoyed the oyster with a dram!
t. S.
Food was amazing! It was a last minute booking after being let down by a previous reservation cancelling last minute and I'm so glad they did it really is a hidden gem
A. C.
Been here several times and always thoroughly enjoyed it! Excellent selection of seafood - the mixed platter was great - and also meat-based and vegetarian dishes. Desserts are an absolute winner, too. It can get very busy but if they have spare spaces or cancellations, they can call you to squeeze you in.
S. F.
Great place for Mussels, obviously we'll sourced and according to the owner are apparently mostly sourced from Shetland. Will definitely be back for the Moules Frites at some point 👍
s. x.
Everything was nice, and they gave us some free oyster to try which was great. I just don’t understand why it was so difficult to ask for ketchup. We have asked three different waiter or waitress for ketchup for three times before we finally got it. Every time they said yes, no problem and never took actions. Sometimes they were chatting together and ignored us absolutely.
D. S.
The food was amazing and the service was great. They managed to serve our severely gluten allergic son food specially prepared for him. Would definitely go there again on our next visit to Edinburgh. We highly recommend The Mussels and Steak Bar!
L.
Disappointed... We visit this restaurant every time we are in Edinburgh and have always loved it. The food was ok but the service was below average. We felt like we were a nuisance. A smile and some warmth cost nothing. There was a couple from Thailand at the next table who seemed lovely but a man who may have been an owner spent the whole time getting himself invited to visit them. We were obviously of no interest or use as we were completely ignored, not bothered by this but a hello would have made a huge difference. It all felt a bit uncomfortable and awkward. This is a bit sad because this was one of our favourite places for lunch.
B. d.
Many moons ago, this place did a £5 lunch WITH a glass of wine & the only meal out I could afford then. Visited the place for ‘old times sake’ & had the best meal I had in Edinburgh this break by a country mile ! The oysters were perfect the chips 🍟 unbelievable & wine by the glass excellent.
The food is better than Hawksmoor, even though to be fair I liked that impressive establishment.
A. W.
My sister and I decided to try the surf and turf..... WOW an amazing dish. We both chose different sauces for our mussels and went for medium rare steak with fries. The steak was the most tender steak I believe I have ever eaten and the mussels were in abundance. We both cleared out plates purely because it was too nice to leave. Thanks you for an amazing lunch
C. J.
Great service and food!
Fresh seafood and delicious steak!
K. B.
Simply amazing
H. S.
The first time the mussels were amazing. The second time we went they first served the mussels burnt and the fried rice hard. The second batch of mussels was better but still was not great. The Mac and Cheese was good though.
M. C.
Service excellent. Clean well presented tables. Food, we had Cullen slink, very good full of potaes, and fish. Perfect. I had crab cakes with house salad for a main . The crab cakes were perfect , good dressing on the salad. An excellent experience.

This restaurant certainly stands out from the crowd on the edge of the grass market.
Upon inspecting the menu, you maybe fooled into thinking that this is just another expensive steak restaurant with poor value for money; well, you would be wrong as I found out!
If you have ever had a surf and turf at a beefeater you would have been horrified to find 3 loan prawns on your plate... Here you get a succulent help of half a kilo of mussels and with an optional upgrade to a sirloin for a few extra quid, it is definitely worth it...
Although our order experienced a mix up with the starters, which meant I didn't get my beef tartare, I did receive my surf and turf with sides of mushrooms bread and beef dripping chips.... I ordered a few sides thinking they wouldn't be too large, how wrong I was... All 3 sides were the size of noodle bowls.
My wife had the salmon super salad which didn't disappoint either...
I was totally stuffed but still wanted desert... I am an exceptionally big eater...
There is seating upstairs which looked a lot more romantic. Although we walked in off the street and got seats, I would strongly recommend booking to avoid disappointment.
Great value for money
Customer service was excellent with a very good understanding of the menu by all staff.
Drinks selections were also good...
I would return to this restaurant without any hesitation...
L. M.
I went with my folks, wife and kid and enjoyed food there. It was excellent and I would return (for me, this is the key point of any review).
They were absolutely excellent on many levels as they allowed us to take our deserts up to our rented apartment 20 paces away as my little boy had to go to bed and had hit the wall.
The look on people's faces as we left with deserts on a tray was marvellous...! And yes I did return their property and we did tip them handsomely for their attitude.
E. J.
Wonderful food! Great service! Definitely recommend!
A. P.
Lunch menu is inexpensive but very tasty. Amazing soups and mussels, nice kids menu, too. We kept on coming back here during our short stay in Edinburgh, definitely recommend! Keep in mind they're closed for lunch 2.45-5pm!
P. G.
Amazing place thanks to our walking tour guide for recommendations. I had pork chop and whisky sauce yummy .
E. W.
Lovely quality fish n chips, we really enjoyed them, staff very friendly would visit again
C. P.
Love it here. Great food.( Check out the Lobster )Lovely warm welcome in a Very busy restaurant . Always eat here when in Edinburgh
j. b.
What can I say. The steak cut like butter and melted in the mouth. The mussels in ginger and chilli sauce were beautiful. The second time I have been here with a year between visits and it has not disappointed or dropped in standards. You will love it if you like mussels, steak or oysters.
M.
One of the best seafood restaurants of Edinburgh. The surf and turf dish is absolutely stunning. The service is OK, and the decorations are very nice. It is recommended to book as it's usually full at rush hour.
H. W.
Visit this restaurant! If you love seafood, and/or you love steak, you will not go wrong. They are great with children, the lunch menu is very reasonably priced, and the location in the Grassmarket adds a certain edge. You can't book during the Festival, when it is always packed, but book at another time of the year and you can linger over your mussels. Wonderful!
R. C.
Loved, loved, loved our experience. Ate there twice over a three night stay, it was that good. Everything was cooked perfectly. Steaks were medium rare as requested . . . The bone-in tomahawk ribeye for two was perfect. The surf and turf with the mussels were awesome, we had the whisky, bacon, cream sauce to go with. The steamed halibut was exceptional as well. If you are within flight range eat here.
M. C. (.
You probably realise by now that I love my steak and given the namesake of the restaurant pretty much suggests you should either try their mussels or steak, I decided on the latter. I really enjoyed the cosy atmosphere of the restaurant, it's small enough to make it intimate but not so small that you feel like you're sharing your table with your next door diners.
The staff were very friendly and are happy to offer suggestions if you're struggling to decide between dishes. The steak was definitely cooked to perfection and I loved every morsel that I ate. By the end, I was patting my full belly in contentment. For a relaxed dining experience with great service in the heart of the city, try The Mussel and Steak.
J. M.
We just had a most enjoyable evening the food was excellent and the staff could not have been more efficient especially Kirkby
M. K.
Outstanding food! We had the sea fruit linguine and both tried not to inhale it as it was so delicious. Tender squid, mussels, gambas and other in a peppery tomatoe broth with linguine. Very friendly staff, great menu also!
A. D.
These are the best mussels I have ever had! They were smooth and in just the right amount of a most sublime sauce. The service was delightful. I will definitely return!
a. s.
Excellent place to eat! They have a fantastic lunch menu, serving excellent quality food at a terrific price. The staff are very friendly and attentive. It can be quite busy so I'd always book a table - just in case.
I prefer sitting in the upstairs section of the restaurant, as the downstairs area can feel a bit crowded at times.
E. R.
This used to be our favourite restaurant in Edinburgh, especially for the delectable grilled seafood platter, with a garlic butter sauce and a light parmesan gratin. Sadly this is no longer on the menu, replaced by a steamed platter with a bouillabaisse sauce - OK but not exceptional, which is pretty much how I would summarise our last visit (probably in every sense). Oh, and expensive. We had the cured salmon and the queen scallops starters, both quite good. For mains, the aforementioned seafood platter and the surf and turf. The steak was partly overcooked (thicker side was medium as requested, thinner side was actually well done and a bit dry), mussels in whisky and bacon sauce were good, but you'd expect the bacon to be crispy, not boiled. And it wasn't cheap at £33. Sticky toffee dessert was good. Wine selection limited and not particularly good. Service was OK. Pity, but I am sure there are better options (and better value for money) out there.
M. C.
Amazing food - fresh, tasty and delicious. Absolutely spot on. Brilliant service.Thank you
R.
Great service, great meal, loved it.
Q. K. C.
Amazing surf and turf! And the chips? Heaven! It was so good I even went through to the kitchens to say thanks to the chefs.
Yes it is expensive, however very beautiful and we'll worth it ♥. I can't fault the service either, very knowlageble and good banter.
I was very tempted to go back the next day too and we were only in Edinburgh for 3 days!
S. A.
Great place to have lunch. All our food was tasty, and plentiful, and service was helpful and friendly if a tad slow. I was unable to eat any of the starters, so the chef made me a starter-sized portion of one of the mains, which was extremely helpful and really enhanced my experience. Thank you, Chef@

After a recommendation we ventured in to a welcoming environment and the service was good initially, we thought they were slightly overpriced for basically a few grilled mussels and to be fair a beautiful steak, salad garnish and chips, I asked if the steak sauce was gluten free to which I was offered a pepper mill! the two courses took 2:45 minutes, it was ok until a table of about 8 walked in then we felt completely ignored for the remainder of the evening, also completely ignored on the way out it’s not hard to say thank you or goodbye, the wine was over priced by £10 not a £26 bottle by any restaurant standards, no return, sad end to a great welcome. ☹️
H.
Food was great. I had the seafood linguini. Mussels, clams, squid, crab claws and shrimp. Nice tomato based sauce. House wine (Merlot) was okay, not great.
A. H.
We discovered this gem by accident. We both had the fish and chips. Generous portion. Plenty of food. The fish was perfect and the fries perfect. It was all very good. Would definitely Come back.
A. S.
We went on a Saturday night. Very busy. Staff was excellent and accommodating but the shop is tiny. I highly reccomend you call ahead for reservations. Menu is excellent. Great Scottish seafood!
J. L.
Mussels were brilliant - the sauce is addictive! Pork loin chop is also a must try!
O. P.
Nice food, good service, reasonably priced lunch menu.
G. G.
Its the first time I had Cullen Skink, and what a better way to have it at The Mussel and Steak Bar. As well, I had their Seafood Linguini and it was very delicious. If you are in Edinburgh, and looking for seafood and steak restaurant, I highly recommend this place.
J. T.
Very nice food and staff. Friendly owner even offerd me two fresh and creamy oysters as well! I had an 8oz ribeye steak and it was perfect. Would totally recommend~
L. Y.
Yum! I had a half Kilogram of mussels with white wine sauce and some chunky chips cooked in beef dripping oil - all for the cost of £7.95. Great value, good food and a nice atmosphere - it's always busy! Go!!
X. T.
Food was pretty good, waiter was absolutely lovely, prices were slightly extortionate.
g.
Place takes advantage of every seating location but are very accommodating if your not happy with your seat. Manager gives excellent service (gave us a side of sauce - not typically provided) Waitress gave excellent service and polite.Mussels were good but the service was better then the food!I would still recommend this place! Try to get reservations first!
M. F.
Inattentive service. They fit us in at 5:45, telling us we had to be out by 7:30. No problem. However, waiting around to have our dinner plates taken away, then never bringing us a dessert menu (which we would have had time to eat) meant we were rushed out in the end.
Food was fine, but bland. Mussels were tasty, but their sauce was scant and more watery. Salmon tartare was, similarly, bland.
I. U.
Beautiful place, great serving, good food.
Oysters very fresh and amazingly tasty.
Seafood platter from the lunch menu not the most satisfactory but good enough for a quick bite.
M. 6.
Best Lobster in town, well priced, well situated and the friendliest staff. Highly recommended.
N. S.
If you're looking for a cheap, traditional or authentic place to eat in Edinburgh, then I would say this is less likely for you. Situated in Grassmarket, Mussel and Steak Bar is probably more considered as a tourist restaurant. It's pricey for what you get, which is actually quite limited (as you can tell, either mussels or steak....) We got the steak and mussel for about £30, which consists of half a kg of mussels and 8oz rib-eye steak. It comes just like that, a slab of steak with a side of mussels :) We also got soup as starter, which is okay, but the portion size is quite small.
Simply put, the bill came to quite a large sum of money and we left not feeling full at all :D
I would say this place is definitely worth a try, but definitely be expecting to be spending quite a bit!
R. E.
Had a great meal here, a bit more than what we usually pay but 100% worth it, would definitely go back, great friendly staff too!
O. S.
Good restaurant to enjoy delicious pans of Mussel with diferent choises of saulces. Good to visit for lunch or dinner. But If you ask for a dessert and coffe advise that younwould like the coffe after of dessert. Otherwise, because they are so desperate that you leave as soon as possible to have a free table for the next customer, they serve tye coffe before the dessert
S. S.
The mussels were very good and the tomato soup was also tasty, but the bread, which didn't come with the food, but had to be ordered as a side dish, was hard and one piece even had mould on it.
The service was ok, but for the mouldy bread we had expected more than an "Oh" and ONE "fresh" piece in exchange.
Fish 'n Chips is served at lunch only.
S. C.
Just what is says on the tin, mussels excellent, oysters cristal fresh, steak sumptuous, great fun, highly recommended
H. I.
This is a great place for dining seafood. A true gem! The oysters are superb, highly recommend.
J. C. R.
This is an *excellent* place to eat the best seafood and the best meats in Edinburgh! We tried both, and everything was cooked to perfection, and smashingly tasty. Not surprisingly, the place is in high demand. Tip: book in advance, I had to book the day before.
N. M.
Overall good restaurant! We really wanted some good mussels and we got them. Nice staff and good menu. The atmosphere/aesthetics lacked a little bit unfortunately. Overall happy!
J. K.
Fantastic surf & turf. Obviously steak and shellfish are their specialty, and here it is done really well. Clean, well lit interior. Could perhaps feel a bit more atmospheric, and the cheese board was so-so, but highly recommended for the mussels, oysters and steaks.
K. S.
If you love seafood and you love meat, this is the place for you. Stumbled upon the Grassmarket branch of this restaurant on a recent trip to the Scottish capital. Simple in decor on both the inside and out, you'd be forgiven for questioning the prices on the extensive and varied menu hanging outside. I urge you to enter. My partner ordered a pot of mussels which was filled to the brim with deliciousness, whilst I opted for the Mussel & Steak surf and turf and it was 100% worth it. A steaming bowl of perfectly cooked, sand free mussels and seafood mix with a walloping massive steak thrown on top….YUM!
D. M.
Great food 👌 friendly staff very welcoming will definitely be returning when next in Edinburgh would recommend 👍
J. M.
This wee place is great, the staff are very friendly and can't do enough for you,,and the food is delicious,,tried King Crab for 1st time,,absolutely delicious even tho it's abit messy🤣🤣👍👍
D. G.
Mussels and haggis Wellington with a whisky sauce. Both delicious.
P. b.
Staff very friendly ,very quick service food was average bill for 2 people plus bottle of wine was £106 iv had better for less if your looking 5 star its not for you scallops were bland as was the t bone partner had lamb also tasteless booked this for fiance 30th on good reviews I am a bit disapointed to be honest but cant fault the staff that served us. I recommend the baileys cheese cake it was very good .
S. S.
Delicious food. Come for the mussels but don't pass on the fish and chips.
S. g.
I loved the mussels ❤️ the best one I ate in a while .. the staff are very friendly
K. T.
Some of the best mussels and fish and chips I've ever eaten!
B. S.
Great steak house at a good location. The staff is very friendly and supportive. We had a good time there and I'm looking forward to be there again at the next tattoo.
d. m.
Mussels grilled with garlic and herbs for starters was excellent. Steak was a sirloin but was covered in too much pepper for this reviewers taste. Boiled potatoes were al-dente and delicious. Great service made up for the over peppered steak.
P. M.
Best seafood we’ve ever had. Highly recommend the giant seafood platter. My mom hates social media but she specifically instructed me to post this. So there you go.
L. T.
Daniel thanks for the service excellent.... food was fresh and delicious yeah would recommend this restaurant to all ....... 5* food 5* service ... thanks 😊
J. W.
One of our favourite Edinburgh restaurants! Every time we visit the city, we always try and make time to visit Mussel & Steak. The seafood here is exceptional, really delicious, this place never fails to disappoint, can really recommend.
S. Z.
The mussels were so good here. The fries were perfectly crispy and the steak was pretty good. Would highly recommend if you're craving mussels!
R. C.
Great seafood!
The seafood which they server here is awesome and the prices are affordable. The grilled oysters is something which I clearly recommend. The service was excelent. Keep in mind that a reservation is recommended, as the restaurant is packed at dinner time.
D. P.
A great find on Edinburgh's stylish Grassmarket. Does what it says on the tin - great meat, great seafood. Well cooked and seasoned. A la carte can be a little pricey (though not outrageous, and certainly not above the Edinburgh average), but the lunch menu is excellent and incredible value.
M. S.
Taste good, a bit overpriced for the quantity in the area. went there busy time had to wait for long to order / get dishes. got water without glasses, bread forgotten but was on bill, waiter started to argue with manager....many things shouldn't happen did happen there.
B.
Had the surf and turf. Great steak and i highly recommend!
L. A.
Fantastic food great value for money, amazing staff
P. N.
Theeee best seafood restaurant in Edinburgh bar none, been visiting for years and never been disappointed.
Get involved 👍
L. B.
Beautiful sharing platter of sea food...highly recommend
N. B.
We have been coming to Scotland every year for the last 6 years and this place NEVER dissapoints! Amazing food and an atmosphere! The best mussels we've ever had every time! ❤
T. K.
Came here for food on 19th February 2018. Staff are fantastic, probably the best service I have seen in a long time, in any restaurant. Food was also incredible. Quite expensive but very much worth it.
L. D.
Great food, T-bone steak was divine! Highly recommended
G. P.
The seafood was great and the waiter extra helpful. We were reluctant initially because of a few negative reviews but I can assure you that this place is worth the visit.
L. V. P.
Really nice little restaurant in the Grass Market area of Edinburgh. Not many tables so be advised to make reservations. The seafood was out of this world. Friendly service and attention to minute details make this a superior choice in Edinburgh
D. D.
I've eaten there several times and have always been well impressed with the food. Service has been rocky on a couple of occasions but that's what you get when you employ east europeans!
Overall i would have no hesitation in giving this place 5 out of 5!
A. J.
5 star service, 5 star food...
Would be nice if they keep the barking dog out of the restaurant though
G. B.
Mussels so small you needed a microscope to see them. Chips good in beef fat. Rump steak flavoursome but came with no salad as they said it would
C. C.
This place is just perfect food beautiful. No reservation and we got a table. Steak fab, menu selection just enough to choose from, warm friendly experience, wud come back anytime I'm here.
S. G.
My favourite steak place in town! Great ribeye, even better sirloin and I just love being there at these rare sunny days, when you can enjoy your big fat fillet outside while lazily observing people come and go to Grassmarket.
The starters, and especially the haggis, are good, the wine is good and I have yet to try out the mussels for which I heard they are equally amazing. Keep an eye for the Sunday lunch deal where you can have 2 8oz steaks and a bottle of wine for just £30. On a single day the place is a bit pricey, but I am always more than happy to pay for good bloody piece of meat!
N. G.
Lunch menu delicious, nice price and complete! 😊
M. P.
Excellent Food! We had Oysters, Queen Scallops, steamed Seabass and Shellfish Platter. Everything was done to the point!
Just relax and enjoy!
박.
2~3 course lunch is available here.
D. H.
Excellent fresh Oyster lunch!

J.
Some of the best mussels we've ever had, cooked to perfection and in a large serving bucket. Highly recommended.
J. O.
The food and the size of the portions were excellent. The atmosphere was good and staff were friendly and extremely helpful....highly recommended
B. P.
Average main entree of steamed seafood, average service from the waitress, & above average price tag :/ In a word - Average. The haggis starter dish with whiskey sauce was good though.
N. C.
Nice place, friendly staff, large portions. The interior send a bit worn down. The bread was a bit of a let down, not stale or bag, just a little boring.
D. T.
Perfect place if you like steak and mussels. Price is reasonable if consider you got both steak and mussels alltogether. Staff are nice too. Upstairs is good to have drinks and talk all nite.
A. C.
Excellent seafood, big portions, and fair prices. The space is a bit small, so put in a reservation or try to go during off hours.
P. C.
Good quality and price! Specially if you are looking for seafood at a good price! Mussels are really taste and salmon too! Really recommended
N. P.
Amazing food, service could be improved though... Still with our good holiday approach ;) not being cranky and just chilling/enjoying good wine while waiting I'll give it 5*
J. R.

Great place for Mussels. Very kid friendly. No beers on tap but what they do have in bottle is good. Friendly and speedy staff.
G. C.
I had steak n beef dripping chips, it was great. My wife also rated the Hake, especially the crushed potatoes.
I have no trouble recommending.
J. H.
Tasty food, not entirely worth the price paid. Some tables too close together - felt like we were sitting with the table next to us.
P. M.
it has been a while since I was here last and I am happy to see the standards haven't dropped. excellent meal, pleasant wine, superb service

Staff were extremely welcoming and friendly. Gave us a table on a busy night without booking in advance. Food is excellent and service is very efficient.
J. G. C.
We got a quiet table by the window away from the noisy area of the restaurant but close to the friendly and helpful staff. The food was great (mussels, scallops and steak) and the price was reasonable.
A. A.
Great food and massive portion
A. M.
Best surf and turf in the city with a fair price. Great service even at peak hours. Good selection of whisky and spirits
J. P. T.
Good seafood well cooked. I would come back. We didn't try the steaks, but they looked pretty solid too.

Great steaks
Great seafood
Made special meal to accommodate my kids
Eat here if you like good food and are hungry
Wife said best steak she ever ate
J.
For a steak place I must admit my steak was not amazing. It was cooked exactly like I asked. However the seasoning and the sauce let it down.
T. M. G.
Good food especially their Scottish Salmon is a must order. Make reservation earlier to avoid waiting.
K. B.
Expensive but have had much nicer mussels for less cost. Steak was quite tough. Overall quite disappointing
