Reviews of White Horse Oyster & Seafood Bar
S. K.
Fantastic service, freshest food good wine, what’s not to like. Happy hour from 4-5pm where oysters are only £1 each. The crab-crusted scotch egg is to die for. Shame the octopus which char-grilled to perfection, compliments to the chef, we’re very small. Definitely recommend and will go again when I return to Scotland.

Shared a lovely meal here with my partner which we booked on short notice, and changed the time of on even shorter notice.
Food was all brilliant, would highly recommend the oysters, mussels and octopus in particular. The oysters were great value and served exactly as I like them with lemon, pickled shallots and Tabasco.
Only thing that let them down was the drinks, the only beer they had was Guinness which is probably the least suitable beer for seafood. They had plenty of taps advertising other stuff but none were on at the time, they also had no bottles of beer/cider. I appreciate most people will drink wine when eating seafood but for those of us who don’t drink wine it would be ideal to have more beer section.
Staff were great and would give 4.5 stars if I could. Will almost certainly be back next time we’re in Edinburgh.

This is the best seafood you’ll find, in a town known for its seafood.
We shared a bottle of wine and had the house platter. This was hands down the freshest, most delicious seafood I’ve ever had. Our favorites were the tuna tartare and the salmon (which had a delightful warmth from Scotch bonnet peppers, but not too spicy at all). That said, every bit was incredible, and nothing was left on our plates.
We will be telling everyone we know about the meal we had at the White Horse in Edinburgh.

This is our favorite oyster place everytime in Edinburgh! I always end up eating too much oysters but its not that I’m complaining 🤣
Highly recommended, try their nice Apple Tart too!

What a great place and amazing oysters! We walked on the streets on our last day and saw a 20 something lady eating 30 piece of oysters in the window. That saw the first strange sign of something is going on. My wife loves oysters so it made sance to eat one or two pieces, since in Hungary there is no sea. We ended up eating 8 oysters together since there were Sunday Happy Hour for Oysters! That is lucky I have to say but the quality? Hmmm. Best we ever had. We did sit at the bar and our waitress recommended her favorite type of oyster and my wife liked it a lot. When paying I realized there is a happy hour so I asked for 2 of each 3 types and we tried all together too. The one type what is the favorite of the barman was blow my mind. I have to say I became an oyster lover myself thanks to White Horse and the staff. They made us feel good even it was a bit embarrassing to sit in just for two oysters at the first place. Their kindness helped us feel good end relaxed and give us the feeling we want to come back. Thank you guys. I also decided not to eat oysters in Hungary anymore but save up the money and come back this place everytime we are in Edinburg.

Simply the best!!! Amazing food, drink and staff. One of the best meals we have had in years, can't wait to go back for more.

I took my dad here for Father's Day and he absolutely loved it! We ordered the seafood platter with a little selection of everything, and it was all very fresh, tasty and high quality. The service was impeccable and the atmosphere was elegant without being stuffy or pompous. They have a great selection of wine and they really know what pairs nicely with the food you're ordering. It's obviously not a cheap place to dine, but it's quite reasonable given the location, standards of service and the freshness of everything served. I will return again on a special occasion.

I booked this before arriving in Edinburgh, having never been before I was relying on reviews and I have to say the white horse met and exceeded both mine and my girlfriends expectations!!
Yes portions are on the smaller side but they make you very aware it is tapas style and I much prefer quality over quantity.
The staff were welcoming, maybe a little busy
, but only too happy to help when asked.
To the people complaining about "vinegar flavoured mussels and clams" it's called pickling and it tends to help if you actually read the menu first.
The only criticism I would have of the place is that I can't access it in South London.

Simply the best!!! Amazing food, drink and staff. One of the best meals we have had in years, can't wait to go back for more.

Best seafood restaurant I have been to. Staff very helpful with every attention to detail. Delicious food. Tried oysters for the first time-loved them.
Highly recommended.

On 4th September, my wife and I visited this restaurant for our dinner before Queen Tribute concert. We ate very fresh oysters and so on. All meals were very good. All staffs were very kind as usual. Looking forward to visiting again soon. Thank you!
On 9th June 2021, My wife and I took our dinner at the Oyster Happy Hour in this restaurant. We ordered three different kinds of oyster for our starter. It was so nice! Especially, we love Caledonian oyster! It was so nice for us! Other seafood meals were also very good. Hebridean cheese dish also very nice. All staffs were also very kind! Looking forward to coming back again soon!
I. I.
Fantastic food! Booked based on previous reviews and was not disappointed! All the seafood dishes we tried were really tasty, but I was particularly impressed with the salmon and the mussles. The sides are really creative too, and we particularly loved the sourdough. Last but not least - and definitely the one dish I'd travel back from London for - their apple tart is to die for! The caramel, the apples the ice-cream, everything is prepared to perfection and mixes fantastically into a dish that melts in your mouth and leaves you speechless!
M. H.
Highly recommend!! Staff were friendly and helpful. Really enjoyed the experience and food was just absolutely delicious. Thank you
C. J. S.
Went to celebrate my Bday by myself and was absolutely amazing place, food and most important the staff!! I enjoyed so much, the food was so fresh and delicious, I tried 1 natural oyester, hand dived scallops, Monkfish satay with seaweed’s slaw, and apple tart! (The dishes are small) but really tasty! can’t wait to come back! Thank you so much for made my night so special as well ♥️
C. D.
Absolutely gorgeous evening at the White Horse. Food and service exceptional. Can’t rate it highly enough. So refreshing to go somewhere with such passion and authenticity post pandemic. Loved it.
H. H.
Amazing food, great atmosphere and friendly staff.
The oysters were some of the best I've had. Highly rate the tuna, monkfish and panna cotta.
Only complaint is that we were informed it was oyster happy hour when we arrived, however, we were charged full price on the bill. Seems the server may have not realised the time it was.
A. H.
Five star for its happy hour offer. Amazing oysters and fresh seafood dishes.
C. M.
Wonderful food in a friendly atmosphere. My new favourite restaurant.
A. F.
Me and my girlfriend went for dinner on the 25/08/2021. The seafood platter was incredible. Very tasty and moreish. If I was being really critical, the crab fries could have been hotter. Apart from that, great service, really friendly staff and we both felt really welcome.
c.
Ordered seafood platter (hot). Food average but In my opinion it is too expensive. Half lobster, mussels. 85 pounds - see photo attached. There are other restaurants that do better tasting seafood platters for similar prices with more seafood. Not worth imo.
J. L.
Beautiful fresh Scottish seafood. Delicious freshly shucked oysters, good wine by the glass. What more could you ask fir?
T. B.
Despite a high Google rating quite a disappointment. Let's start with the food: oysters, tuna and tempura prawns are excellent. The beef was a disaster - very tough meat and should have never served this way. The apple tart for dessert was not really fresh and with a very hard base. Service: we had a reservation for 6pm and got the table next to the kitchen door (I hate that...). There was no reaction when we mentioned the beef. So, all in all: if you search I'm sure you can find a better place in this lovely city.
H. M.
Absolutely fabulous from start to finish amazing food and service... would absolutely return
R. L.
I cannot praise this restaurant enough! The staff were so friendly, upbeat and informative. It had a romantic, yet lively atmosphere. We were a couple trying Oysters for the first time and looking for an intimate spot, but there were other diners like family’s and groups having a great time. Modern music, which gave it a great vibe.
The food... out of this world! We ordered about five dishes from the tapas menu and the lobster tampera and we were not disappointed. We also tried some oysters. Every dish gave us a new seafood experience and we found it difficult to pick out one favourite.
Once the night of eating and drinking was over, we quickly booked another table for the following evening to enjoy OYSTER HAPPY HOUR! £1 a oyster was an amazing deal! The oysters were so fresh and we enjoyed several plates of 24 Oysters!
Our trip to Edinburgh was a short stay of only 2 nights, but we are so lucky to have found this place, as it really made our visit. We can’t wait to return and will definitely book this restaurant every night we are there!
Clearly, I cannot recommend this place enough ❤️
J. O.
The freshest oysters in town. Lovely ambiance and very accommodating staff.
R. C.
What a fantastic experience, one I would highly recommend to any seafood lover.
Is it expensive, yes. Are the portion little smaller side, yes . Is the food superb, unbelievably so !
The fresh oysters are addictive and the most amamzing tasting I have ever had.
Highly recommend especially if you can time your visit for their £1 per oyster happy hours
S. B.
Seafood tapas style bar. Portions were small but each dishes were lovely. It is bit pricey, however, they have various offers. Had 16 fresh oysters for £16. Scotch egg was amazing, beef and oyster were OMG. SO GOOD. Octopus was very salty and burned. But overall, I would love to go back.
D. S.
The hostess who greeted us was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable about the menu from the outset.
We had a selection of oysters to start as it was "buck a shuck" on Mondays and they were all incredible, each with their own unique flavour profile.
After this, as the menu is created tapas style, we had the crab scotch egg, dressed crab, charred octopus, scallops in nduja butter, shoestring fries and tenderstem broccoli in chilli and garlic. All were perfectly cooked and seasoned just right and the bottle of albarino we had with the meal was superb as well.
I can't fault The White Horse, the food, wine, decor, atmosphere and staff were all phenomenal.
M. C.
Excellent! Very fresh seafood! Nice and friendly environment!
M. A.
We visited this beautiful vibrant restaurant to have some seafood. We have been hosted and served by gorgeous Anna. She was simply amazing and professional, met us with a smile and bid us goodbye with one. The food was spectacular; fresh, tasty, and just perfect.
Will definitely come again whenever I’m in Edinburgh.
D. L.
Perfect place for seafood and drinks. Oyster happy hour from 16-17h highly recommend...
P. G.
Fantastic service but more importantly, every seafood dish we ordered was esquisite..
L. A.
If you are a seafood fan then you must stop here for dinner. We sampled many of the smaller plates and every dish was just fantastic. I am now converted to octopus as this was prepared very well. The staff were very friendly and attentive.
Y.
Really cool and welcoming gem of a restaurant. The food was excellent, and the young waitress was so warm, engaging, friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Will definitely be returning.
S. Q.
The food here is fantastic. I loved the subtle Asian influence the broccoli with spicy oil, the oysters Tempura and and charred lobster tail. Scottish oysters are incredible with a sweet briny taste. The only downside is I was dining alone and seated at what became an uncomfortable stool with no back by the window. Otherwise I would give 5 stars.
D. P.
Very hospitable environment. The dishes were all very fresh and tasty. We especially enjoyed the oysters. We will be back again when we return to Edinburgh
L. X.
The oysters were fresh and the mussels were delicious. Highly recommend.
V. W.
One of the best Oyster bar I've ever been! The oysters are fresh and tasty. Seafood menu is extensive and impressive. Delicious food. So fresh! The interior is very modern and tasteful too. A little bit overpriced hence the missing star.
R. A.
Incredible food and cosy setting. Was recommended by Jack from concierge at the Kimpton Hotel. We had the octopus, the lobster scotch egg, the seaweed salad, seared tuna and a combination of grilled and raw oysters. The plates are small - perfect to share for 2! The seaweed salad too salty for ny taste but everything else was incredible- especially the octopus 🐙 and the scotch egg lobster!
L. V.
Oysters were great. Happy hour 4-6 pm for £1 Oyster. We also had small plates which was amazing. Staff was nice and friendly.
L. O.
Beautiful restaurant, fabulous food, excellent service.
V. C.
Go during Happy Hour! Oyster are 1£ and my sisters ordered 24! Totally worth it. Try to book early as they ran out fast. They only had one kind when we got there at 545.
Happy hours are Monday to Thursday, 4-6pm.
The dishes are for sharing and very small. Sort of tapa style. Will need to order few dishes and it could get pricey if you have a big party.
The scallops were my favorite! Definitely try it.
C. R. M.
Fabulous food. Definitely will go again. Very fresh and tasty with good pricing. Floriana was a wonderful host. Brilliant customer service
P. P.
Great food and cocktails! Love the fresh oysters, mussels and straw fries! Friendly staff and good service throughout! Bartender is friendly and make great drinks! Thanks
B. T.
Amazing venue. Special occasion feel with food to match. Friendly staff.
E. H.
This was a really great meal, and I wish I could go here more often! The dishes were creative and delicious, and the staff was wonderful as well!
R. C. L.
Amazing place. We tried some oysters and small plates and asked for an incredible charred octopus although we were completely full. One of the best places where I have eaten lately.
m.
Absolutely delicious and perfectly cooked food. King crab legs were a perfect size as a starter very juicy and tender. Monkfish scampi as main was super too. You get what you pay for & it is money well spent here.
Manager & staff were all very polite.
P. R.
Amazing food, great service and decent wine list. Scallops and King Prawn were amazing. They have a significant oyster menu and great platter options. They also open on a Sunday which is great and unlike most of the other higher end resturants.
u.
Food was spectacular. Service was a little slow but not a big deal. Everyone is having staffing issues. Very small so reservations are needed
E.
If you love seafood, The White Horse is the place to go. Previously a traditional boozer, now an incredibly impressive eatery. We'll be back soon for more oysters and a couple of cocktails.
I. a. O. p.
The restaurant served delicious fresh oysters and seafood dishes. I’m a bit disappointed about their potions compared with the price. However, it was a good experience to visit here.
J. S.
Excellent seafood. After trying a few in Edingburgh I'd say this one is the best- especially their oysters. They have a great selection of creative sharing plates. Staff are friendly. Decor is great but the lighting is very low (on purporse to create a mood but some might not like it). Excellent cocktail menu.
Prices are what you'd expect of a seafood restaurant- not cheap. However they obviously take a lot of care and chose good quality ingredients so on the whole it is worth the money.
P. C.
Some of the best seafood I've eaten!
L. n.
The restaurant deco is quite dark. The service is good. The seafood dishes are very fresh and delicious. I do not recommend to try the steak dish in a seafood restaurant. No surprise.
B. G.
The oysters were spectacularly good. We also made our way through the majority of the small plates menu and the quality ranged from excellent to fabulous. The wine list was strong and the cocktails were classy and prepared with skill and care. The service was friendly, efficient and unpretentious. I thought it was great. Highly recommended.
M. R.
Fantastic restaurant! Every single dish was amazing, and service was very efficient.
L. S.
We ordered the Christmas menu after Rick Stein cancelled our order due to a 'system failure'. The food we received was absolutely delicious. Made even more so by a challenging Christmas day to A and E. Thank you the food was amazing and I highly recommend
S. S.
Like the tapas of seafood the small plates of food are incredibly tasty. The booth for 6 Sanjit small with 3 men and 3 women and would be better suited for only. So delicious. It's def go again.
R. P.
Fantastic food, friendly staff and great drinks. The oysters and crab scotch egg were brilliant and The Bloody Mary was delicious!
X. W.
Fantastic service, Food tasted fresh, The oysters were delicious and so was the deep-fried shrimps. Would come back here in future and totally would recommend for others/ Tourists.
E. M.
Every dish was delicious!! Can't wait to come back!
Winter Tip- ask to be seated at the front if you're arriving at 12. The staff (understandably) are back and forth from their kitchen and taking deliveries in, so it was really cold.
T. V.
I'll start by stating that the food was excellent - the tuna fresh, the mussels presented in an excellent sauce, the shoestring fries were crispy, and the seaweed tequila cocktail (I think it was a margarita version) was truly fantastic. However, the service was mixed. We had one server who was actually quite rude and rushed our party (5 people) and seemed visibly annoyed that we were not ready to order. Unfortunately this had a negative impact on the vibe of the evening. I have to add, in fairness, that the main server who seemed to be in charge of the floor was really great and somewhat made up for the lacking manners of their colleague. The other thing is the limit of 2 hrs on a weekend for a larger party. I would rethink this, as it's not always possible to wrap up a meal, have drinks, and enjoy the atmosphere if there are 4+ guests. What was really unpleasant, and earns the 3 stars, is being made to leave exactly once the 2 hours are up *when there are two empty tables at the front of the house. Finally, management need to re-think accepting larger parties if they can't be spatially accomodated. We were cramped into a booth and requested a chair for the end, which seemed like a big ask. But you should not realistically try and shoehorn 5 adults into a small booth and then be surprised, during these times, when we don't want to sit on top of each other. Either don't take the reservation, or make sure there is adequate space. SO in summary: food and drink is excellent, atmosphere and treatment of more than 4+ diners, and in some cases service, needs a closer look.
C. P.
The team is great! The bartender is attentive and outgoing, the waiters took the time to speak English slowly (because we are French). We recommend this restaurant which for us (tourists) is the best seafood restaurant in Edinburgh. Thank you to them for a great birthday party.
M. L.
Reserved online. Given a window seat by the door which was a bit chilly.
Service was lovely and recommendations were spot on.
Tapas style plates and recommended 2 plus a side dish. Delish wines and tasty (I'm told) oysters.
Gonna return again.
A. H.
Tiny dishes, expensive. Having spent 50 pounds a head we all left the restaurant hungry. No main courses on the menu, so you have to keep ordering the small plates at 9-16 pounds each, which just fail to fill you up. Dishes are tasty, cooked well, but taking into account the above considerations, we will not be returning. Coffee is horrible, too.
T. K.
I’ve walked past this place a hundred times thinking ‘what if’? I finally took the plunge this evening (Wednesday and was not disappointed). The atmosphere even on a quieter night was still buzzing (may have chosen to turn down the music, on my own not an issue but not great for conversation).
The menu is short and sweet, I had a main with two sides which was filling enough (£34). The quality was very good but I’m laying off 4 stars because it was a little punchy for the quality/quantity offered. Wine also got expensive quite quick and not sure why we see so much new world rather than the European greats.
Staff was wonderfully attentive, helpful and knew their menu very well.
In short, i look forward to coming back (when someone else is picking up the cheque) to the great service and atmosphere.
M. W.
The restaurant here is nice and the place has good ambience. The servers were accomodating and helpful and the wine list has a good choice of fish friendly bottles. Oysters were nice and fresh but I was a bit disappointed by the blackened octopus as a dish. Prawns in the tempura were nice and juicy but were a little oily.
D. H.
The small plate concept was a pleasant surprise for us. The whole menu tempted us so we basically ordered and tried everything. Except for crab...apparently, they were out so no crab scotch eggs or crab fries.
A favorite of mine was the scotch bonnet salmon (head and shoulders above other salmon dishes we had in Scotland). Other stand-outs were the monkfish satay, the mussels (ask for extra bread), and the charred octopus.
As a couple, we were split on the beef & oyster. My wife didn't care for the rump steak while I preferred it to the oysters. I guess that's why sharing small plates works so well.
The wine list was limited but priced quite reasonably.
G. W.
Accidental find but delicious varied seafood. Small potions but memorable. Would highly recommend. Pricey, but it's the Royal Mile!
H. H.
AMAZING food! The seafood platter was so fantastic, staff were lovely. Would definitely recommend.
B. O.
Very nice food. However if you are going to opt for one of the seafood platters I would suggest getting some extra sides as I was still hungry after eating it. Little bit on the pricey side ,but good.
J. C.
Without doubt some of the best oysters we’ve ever had.
Add to that some incredible sharing plates (scallops, flat iron steak, octopus & merguez) makes this place an absolute gem!
Staff were delightful and very knowledgeable. This place is a must try!
S. I.
We ate tapas-style dinner with my friends and loved it, what a great concept. Big choice of seafood, beautifully executed dishes and friendly atmosphere. Tuna was to die for.
v. c.
Seafood platter so far so good
I. L.
Good food, not the best atmosphere
P. C.
Great service and awesome selection of seafood - we got the house platter which was very tasty, next time will try the hot platter
S. K.
This a small cosy restaurant bar. We tried 7 dishes, mussels, salmon, beef&oyster, tomato and mozzarella, deep fried lobster (tempura), fries, and oyster shots. All of them very tasty. Very friendly staff, and great music. I will definitely go again there. Just remember, an average guy needs minimum two small plates.
P. O.
£1 an oyster Saturday 12 - 5 is a great deal
V. B.
Went there for my birthday dinner. Food was just amazing, great wine selection and staff were friendly and genuinely nice. Thanks for the great experience, would definitely recommend.
M. G. S.
Amazing place, so cozy and vibrant at the same time. Love their food and attention to detail. Every dish well presented and fresh as it should be! Will be back soon
S. S.
Amazing food and very good service. Had the 3 student oysters, the grilled octopus and scallops. All amazing but the scallops were so good! Definitely recommend.
E. W.
Loved it! Delicious cocktails that complimented really fresh seafood. Flavours didn't overwhelm the beautiful fish (especially recommended the tuna with sesame) and staff were really friendly. We will be back!
M. K.
Seafood tapas – almost – but really good! Took the family to White Horse Oyster & Seafood Bar during a recent half-term holiday to Edinburgh. The food and service were both of excellent quality. The restaurant (like many in the city) doesn’t follow the ‘appetizer, main, dessert’ formula. They have several small plates (2-4 servings) which you pair with side dishes. There are also some large platters (that we did not try) called ‘hot’ (cooked sea food served hot) and ‘cold’ (combination cooked and raw seafood served cold). There are also a few tempura options.
K. K.
The buck a shuck is a great deal!
M. I.
Service was great, food really good if slightly pricey. Decor could be improved
K. C.
Fresh and fancy foods! Enjoyed very much when drinking inside was allowed again in Scotland.
C. W.
The service is Ok.
The food looks amazing! But tastes only Ok, could be better. Very small portion as well.
Pricey too.
Environment is great too.
G. C.
I read excellent reviews about this restaurant so with no hesitation we went to this place and we were not disappointed. The fresh oysters were tasty and the apple tart was delightful. Definitely would come back here whenever I’m around Edinburgh. 👌
B. A. O.
Nice and social with good service.
Quite tasty overall although you pay premium here. E.g Asparagus and one scallop £14. Etc. I’ve also had better bigger oysters from Edinburgh restaurants I have to say. Might give another go when I’ve saved up some pocket money.
S.
Beautiful, high quality food. Would happily go again.
P. H.
Lovely oysters (£1 happy hour) friendly staff and great cocktails
c. g.
Tasty seafood and originally cooked, a must see. Music is good as well
D. P.
Top notch food, great staff loved the Tempura prawns and the oysters will definitely go again.
K. C.
The prawn and lobster toast was not what I was expecting and a plesant surprise. The wine selection was also quite fitting to the fare.
S. K.
Delightful. Food was amazing. Seating is a bit cosy though.
K. R.
Omigosh I have found absolute Nirvana! And I arrived during happy hour for 1pound choice of 6 different delish and fresh oysters!!!
M. C.
We visited the White Horse Oyster & Seafood Bar last night. Lovely time had by both of us!
The Loch Fyne and Caledonian oysters were sweet and full of flavour. We also ordered the charred octopus and sourdough bread. The octopus was our favourite! However I knocked off a star for the Straw Fries. Very thin shards of potato, I call them crisps. Not what we were expecting.
Luke took very good care of us and was happy to answer our many questions.
Looking forward to another visit.
N. S.
Got a table for 6 for the Oyster Happy hour and absolutely loved it. Also ordered the House seafood platter and everything was fresh and tasted amazing on the platter. Loved the fresh oysters and would've given a 5 star rating but they ran out of most oysters by the time our first round was done, probably just because how popular the place is. Worth the money especially cuz of the 50% off for the eat out to help out plan. Would Def visit again for another 1£ per oyster happy hour.
S. W.
We had such a good meal here which included their cold seafood platter and some hot sides. The service was also to high standard. I can’t recommend it enough.
D. F.
So ordered the @ Home package and it is truly amazing. Yes you have to cook it yourself, but all the special ingredients are supplied, all the prep work has been done for you, and full step by step instructions are supplied that even a novice could cook up a delight. Worth every penny, was going to not tell my wife and take full credit for an amazing meal, however she would just expect that every time.
J. C.
Food and service were excellent! We had a range of small plates and sides and a mix of oysters. Monkfish Satay being my favourite of the small dishes.
B. P.
Great experience, service was very nice and the charred octopus is incredible!
H. S.
One of the loveliest dining experiences I've in a long time. Between the friendly staff and incredible food you can't go wrong.
J. K.
I was there a few times already. I like the food, although they have an issue how to repeat each dish with the same outcome. If the food would be more consistent they would get my 5 start. The staff service is good. The decor is “charming”, but the tables are definitely too small, so they weren’t thinking about the design practicality. However, I would recommend that place as it’s tasty and the quality of the food is high.
Regards
Jake #JacobDeerCooking @deerartem
S. T.
Tried oysters here for the 1st time and they was phenomenal!
R. S.
It was just ok. Tourist prices, underwhelming taste. Very good toilets though.
C. C.
Always enjoy a trip to White Horse. I have taken the kids, the In-laws, friends and once just my husband and I. Food is always delicious, great seafood and service is good. Even managed to convert a non seafood lover.
M. M.
After a long lock down with no Oysters I was finally able to satisfy my craving 🤤
O. M.
Fantastic food and service, four of us were able to have all the small plates and were very happy with them all
H. P.
It’s a bit expensive than I expected, but the staff was very friendly, dishes are well-cooked, tasted good.
C. R.
Really enjoyed the food and service. Had a bunch of the sharing platters , as well as the different oysters which were all delicious! Would definitely recommend going here when in Edinburgh.
A. S.
Fantastic seafood, great cocktail, friendly and attentive staff. I would certainly recommend. Prices are fair for the quality of food you get. the only thing I would say, please add Tuna Tartar to the menu. we've found it strange that you could only get it if you bought a set combo but not as an individual dish. anyway, we had a great time, thanks
D. H.
Classic cocktails. Brilliant service. Intimate atmosphere. Brilliant tempura broccoli. Highly recommend the hassle back potatoes - good giggle when one potato was sacrificed to the floor 👀😋
Y. L.
Fresh seafood and nice environment
S. K.
Booked this very last minute for a date night with my husband. We came through from Glasgow and were not very organised booking a restaurant.
We were not disappointed. Wow, wow is all I can say! This is pure food heaven and the staff are amazing. So friendly and helpful. The monkfish kebabs, scallops and the slaw is to die for!!! The choice of fresh oysters are fabulous. Will be back tomorrow for lunch!!
C. G.
Popped in for a couple of cocktails and some small plate. Lovely seafood and cracking service
s. w.
Absolutely delicious food. The plates are sharer sizes which is great as you can then try various dishes. Recommend the monk fish and the broccoli but to be honest all dishes were great. Service was fab so friendly and polite. Would recommend and go back 😁
C. H.
The food, service, drinks, and speed of service was all perfect. I enjoyed every dish and as a group we pretty much tried everything. Worth every penny
S. H.
The food here is seriously good. Perfect service and evening well enjoyed
J. H.
We came to Edinburgh for our friends surprise hen-do and I booked here after reading amazing reviews and we weren’t disappointed, we had such a fabulous time! The atmosphere was relaxed, classy and elegant - the service was fantastic, our crab claw was a little under and the manager was incredibly gracious and took it straight back to get us a fresh one, no questions asked. Our waitress was knowledgeable and lovely - and needless to say the food was exquisite. Thank you for a wonderful evening!!
M. C.
Incredible food and service from start to finish. The staff and food are equally incredible. Cannot wait to go back! Expecially for Oyster happy hour!
K. V.
We've visited twice so far and will definitely go again! The staff is quite friendly and very attentive. The oyster happy hour is great and the food of very good quality, tasty and very reasonably priced. Best apple tarts we've ever had!
謝.
Lovely restaurant! The menu design was cute! And food was fresh!
R. O.
whats not to love. oysters are incredible, seafood dishes close to none, lovely staff & vibey datey atmosphere, oh and the apple tart is not one to miss. go there for a wine & dine & enjoy yourself.

Amazing food, friendly staff and nice prosecco

If you make your way to Edinburgh, stop by this restaurant. The atmosphere was cozy with great music in the background. The food is phenomenal! We ordered Hand Dived Scallops, Beef & Oysters, Charred Octopus, Tempura Salt & Pepper Prawns and their Sourdough bread with seaweed butter. Everything was delicious! Our favorite was the Charred Octopus. The bartender made the Royal Old Fashioned for my husband and it was the best one he's tried. I typically don't prefer whiskey and I kept taking sips from his glass!
D. D.
One of the best tapas style seafood restaurant. Serves hot and cold tapas along with share plates and oysters from 4 regions and tempura. This place is awesome. The food is very fresh, very tasty and plated very well. Their crab legs, lobster salad and tempura is phenomenal. They have well stocked up bar with beers and spirits and service is excellent, polite and not pushy. The prices are a little high and can cost around £100 for two. Worth visiting.
D. W.
First visit last Sunday and simply cannot wait to return, the food was fantastic as where the Wines and the service provided was 1st class, would highly recommend this place to anyone.
T.
Awesome place for a nice dinner, absolutely loved it! Delicious sea food, very friendly staff and reasonable prices! Would definitely go back!
E. M.
Very warm and atmospheric, staff extremely attentive and knowledgeable- making it more of an experience rather than just a 'meal out'. If you love seafood and obviously oysters then this is a great wee find, very deceiving from the outside! And I loved how we could chose different variations of oysters! Great place for a romantic meal or chilled get-together with friends.
B. C.
Excellent seafood and fish menu, everything tasted and looked fantastic. We had oysters, lobster, crab and mussels; some spicy, some creamy - all superb. This would be a great choice for a group booking/full meal, or just a quick class of fizz and a few oysters. The staff are really helpful/friendly. The wine list has a good range of prices.
G. H.
Over priced for small portions. We were given a chipped bowl as a finger bowl. Our bill was near £300, expected better service.
J. M.
I made reservations for my wife and I while in town for Hogmanay. Only bar seating was an option when making the reservation. However, when we got to the restaurant, they had dining seats available and changed this for us. We ordered the Royal Old Fashioned for each of us, which were very good. All of the staff that we interacted with were very friendly and accommodating. Not being able to decide exactly what appealed to us more, we went for the Full platter. The food was good, though I think I would serve things a bit different if it were my place. While this is a seafood platter and most things are dressed in some fashion, would have liked a little more seasoning since it is being dressed for us. We've had seafood platters in Paris where nothing was dressed, which was just fine and allowed us to use whatever ourselves. In this case, the scallops fell a bit flat and the lobster was a bit tough. The oysters, however, were very meaty and tasty. The bread with roasted garlic on the side and the butter was great. Would have liked some sort of bread or cracker for the crab part of the dish rather than eating via fork. For dessert we ordered a burnt lemon brulee. This was pretty good and was a good finish to the meal. If you do go, definitely get the oysters. I would go back again just to see how things are off holiday.
E. F.
Stopped in for happy hour to enjoy the 1 pound oysters and a drink.
The bar staff is fantastic and the drinks are fabulous.
We ordered 2 dozen oysters - they were too good!
A.
The seafood and service at the White Horse was of an exceptional standard. The menu was extensive and impressive but it was complimented by the quality of food being produced. I tried soft shell crab, octopus, squid and crab scotch egg and it was an overwhelming experience, cooked to perfection. Was was equally impressive was the restaurant in itself, with the staff being very receptive to a persons tastes of both food and wine. Out of the three seafood restaurants visited in Edinburgh this was the best.
R. F.
Amazing food and the oysters were fantastic. Really good place for a date night or just to have some oysters
D. E.
Fantastic food and great service, definitely one I can recommend
A. J.
The food is absolutely stunning and amazing, the staff couldn't be more helpful. I guess the only downside is the small portions, reason for which the waiters ask if you want to have another look at the menu after mains. They are definitely aware. But I guess it depends on personal preferences because even though I wasn't full after desserts, my heart certainly was. Definitely worth checking out.
G.
Was good, decent service, main bartender really knew what he was doing but the other guy was a little new it seemed. My old fashioned was terrific to be honest and the oysters we had were excellent. All in all a good visit but just after a big meal so only a little bite to eat. Good atmosphere, can see the resemblance to the other restaurants of the group
S. P.
Some of the finest seafood and cocktails in ages! We tried three dishes and started with 6 oysters. Fresh ingredients and balanced flavours. Oysters had a full and smooth taste. Simply excellent quality!
Will be back for sure.
V. C.
Very very good!!
We went before six and got 6 delicious oysters for £6 each! !
We followed with some more excellent seafood and an excellent chardonnay which followed a glass of prosecco each .
Could you ask better ?? !!
Charming staff as well.
Must must go back!
L. B.
This meal was the best we had during our entire Edinburgh stay. Every single item was delicious, flavour combinations were insane. The service was also faultless. HIGHLY recommend.
I. M.
Best oysters we had in Scotland! I would say that everything in this restaurant was amazing, including other seafood plates and amazing service.
We had such a great time that we came back the following day for the oyster happy hour.
Special thanks to caoimhe - that made our time simply perfect!
M.
While visiting Edinburgh we found this restaurant and had to repeat after one visit as the food and service are delicious. We will definitely come back here again! We highly recommend it to all seafood lovers!

Absolutely outstanding great staff great staff great atmosphere best place ever in Dublin.. way too far!!!!
And if you get the chance to go there for the oysters happy hour it'd be the best experience you will ever make!!! Too good to be true such a great selection and such a freshness so so good and unbelievably tasting!!!!
Well done guys best place ever really
M. D.
Lovely seafood menu, reasonable wine selection. To my own tastes some of the food is overcooked and over fancy, hiding the good stuff on the menu. Was the satay sauce bottled and adulterated? Was the king crab frozen? Still enjoyable, with a quirky and non-untrusive music selection. Deserves to be busier.
S. Y.
Very nice place! Not the cheapest, but the food is very good overall. The oysters and the chargrilled octopus were amazing! I also tried a scotch bonnet salmon and tuna tataki which were both very nice, but maybe a tiny bit dry. The staff were all great! The place is quite loud, though. It was a busy evening and with the people around and the music it was hard to hear what the waitress was saying.
ก. ส.
House platter was excellent. Highly recommend for sharing for 2 people. Creative menu and display. Good selection of oysters. Very delicious! A bit dark but good music. Good service.
M. L. R.
Came into White Horse on a Friday 4pm for oysters and pre-dinner snacks. We’d hoped for buck-a-shuck oysters but that deal is only Mon-Thurs! The restaurant itself is well decorated and the staff were nice & helpful. We were almost the only people there, so food came rather quick. Wine selection was good & beer on draft very cold! The dishes we had were 2 variety of Scottish oysters, and squid and brocollini tempura. Really delicious and would recommend to everyone ☺️
K. M.
This is in my neighbourhood so I was quite looking forward to the opening. First visit was excellent, with the only caveat being that we were the only customers in the place. Otherwise, great food, smart presentation, lovely atmosphere. As weeks have gone by they seem to be picking up pace, perhaps the word is spreading. If they keep their happy hour, I'll gladly be visiting my local oyster purveyor rather than Ondine.
S. G.
First time realizing how good oysters can be :)
D. D.
Very good food. Well executed with great flavours and have to say some very fresh seafood. We tried a lot of the plates to share and all of them were very good. My favourites were the mussels, lobster salad and the monk fish. Cosy space and good service .
Y. H.
Lovely relaxed venue, tastefully decorated and haas bar at front with more formal seating at back of the room. We had a drink and 6delicious oysters each. I'm only giving 4 not 5 stars as we didn't sample anything other than the oysters.
r. s.
One of the best seafood platter's we've had. Definitely recommend having a side with it (as a little small) but flavours and taste is amazing. Great staff too, a must for any seafood lover
A. A.
Dropped in for lunch. Certainly one of the nicer places on the Royal Mile. We started with some oysters. There was a choice of three and we went with the Lindisfarne, which were delicious! Very fresh with a delicate but distinct flavour. There was a good selection of wine by the glass, and they also did 500ml carafes which is nice. We weren't in a hurry so it suited us perfectly!
Dishes are tapas style. Highlights were the burrata and heritage tomatoes and tempura tenderstem broccoli. The seared tuna in sesame seeds was a letdown because it was served in a pool of soy. A shame because the tuna was good quality.
Service was friendly and efficient. Apologies to our server as I forgot to leave a tip! We made an extra donation at the National Gallery later in the day.
L. H.
If you're looking for some terrific seafood, try one of the towers. It came loaded with oysters, smoked salmon, crab claws, pickled mussels & clams, and tuna ceviche in an amazing horseradish marinade. The cocktail sauce was incredible and different from any I've had before. The octopus and the scallop appetizers were wonderful. We had a super friendly waitress and a wonderful meal.
P. G.
We order the recommendations and we were delighted.
K. G. (.
Got a little chilly sitting in the bar area as the door was open til late. Only one drinks menu given between four people initially until we asked for another. With an extensive drink menu, one each would have been best. After ordering our first drink (cocktails/prosecco etc) the drinks menu were taken away, and we had to ask to order wine/other drinks after we ordered our food. Other than that, food was great!
B. Y.
Top of the line, food, wine, ambiance, service! Prices commensurately high as should be expected for an oyster and seafood bar. I have a big appetite and asked for some bread to go with it, soooo good but portions sooo small that i still had to get some food after the restaurant.
E. F.
fine dining, friendly waiters, a tad expensive but pretty good food.
S. O.
Amazing oysters at a reasonable price. Nice wine list although not all of them available. Do not try the lobster salad, it cannot even be called as a salad.. too modern, too minimalist for my taste. Go for the oysters and stay with the oysters.
T. O. M. a. t. S.
Great oysters and very good seafood. This is part of a chain with sales targets to achieve, so be careful the waiter tried to oversell us and we ended up with too many dishes. Other than that it was fine. But be warned.
N.
Walked past this place with my girlfriend several times on our trip to Edinburgh, so we decided to take the plunge and try it.
We were not disappointed, from the start the young woman took our oyster virginity and it was just an amazing experience from there onwards. Mussels with beef cheek, who would have ever thought that would work? But it did on so many levels.
The salted apple tart as dessert.. There are few things that I have experienced that take you back. That tart took me back to cold bonfire nights eating a toffee apple by the fire in a huge oversized jacket.
I can't say enough good things about this place and congratulations on having such a wonderful establishment and staff.
L. A.
What a treat this place is. Staff are polite, pleasant and provide excellent recommendations. The food was fresh, well presented, a good choice of local dishes and fish and excellent drinks to accompany. Lovely place for a date or even when you are on a tourist day in Edinburgh.
V. L.
The oyster happy hour was really good value! Oysters were fresh and moorish. Def recommend this place for your oyster fix!
J. A.
Fantastically fresh oysters, excellent and well presented seafood small dishes, with imaginative spices and sauces. Very good wine selection to pair the food with, too. A breath of fresh air for the stuffy Edinburgh seafood scene, with excellent service as well.
L. E.
Incredible food and service
Ten out of ten!!
S. V.
We thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Seafood tapas style is the way to go. Each dish we had was tasty and just enough. We also enjoyed the original cocktails.
A. W.
Amazing fish and seafood. Very accommodating to being gluten free. Was truly delicious!!
V. N.
Went there approx 6 times during my 2 weeks in Edinburgh. Oysters very good, prosecco very good, but avoid lobster (very small, over cooked and tasteless plus $$$$). Staff are friendly and service is excellent. I would return on future trips; but never order the lobster.
T. S.
Very tasty sharing plates, although quite expensive normally. 2/3 small plates plus a side are needed for each person. The octopus was fantastic.
S. L.
Awesome seafood, very well presented. The Scotch Bonnet salmon is quite something and the tuna tartare has a big wasabi kick. Cocktails are really good. All in all, had a great evening, will definitely go back.
K. P.
This was an amazing find on a wee wander down the Canongate! It was a perfect example of new Scottish cuisine -fresh, local and perfectly presented. Amazing service. The only regret was not having more nights in Edinburgh for a second go!
R. S.
We went here on a Monday and had all the different tasty oysters (Try the tempura, AMAZING!).
After that the crab legs, sesame tuna, charcoal octopus, kingcrab fries and as absolute finale the Tempura prawns. All superwell prepared and tasty AF. Our waitress Stephanie was serving us with A class recommendations and service.
Sidenote; the martini's are banging as a matching cocktail ;) I would recommend this to everyone!
J. V.
Really excellent seafood, plenty of choice in oysters. All plates we tried tasted very well. Friendly and helpful staff. Absolutely worth going.
G. P.
Oyster novice but the staff were friendly and helpful. The oysters were delicious too!!
M. L.
We loved the seafood so much we came back the next night! Definitely will come back on our next trip. The oysters were clean, fresh and flavorful!
M. K.
If you love Oysers (and who doesn't?) this is the place. An amazing selection of oysters from nearby northerly regions like Lindesfarne and Carlingford. Best thing about this place is the happy hour oyster from 4-6pm, for £1 a pop - how can you resist?
In addition, the Oysters are apparently delivered within 24hrs of leaving the sea. Fresh enough for you?
If seafood is not your thing, there's beef on the menu. There's also monkfish, squid and other seafood.
s. m.
Well eaten but bad experience.
We booked at 8:30 pm for 3 people. Arrived at the appointed time, we've been received with a palpable embarrassment and the awkwardly asked question "have you reserved?" by crossing your fingers so that it is not the case and politely evade us, notwithstanding the tables available. Unfortunately for them, our reservation was eventually found, leaning ourselves directly on the tablet. The blonde waitress pulled out, followed by a surreal exchange behind the counter with the brunette waitress who was maliciously eyeing my ... son, 11 years old. They seemed to wonder how it had been possible to take the reservation with a child. We heard her say "I did not know". The brunette comes back to us and confirms that indeed there is a problem, indicating a local regulation prohibiting the presence of minor after 22h. Whatever ... I remind you that it is 8:30 pm, was it useful to inform us? If it was necessary then why not have shared it to the other family arrived 15 'after us also with a child of 13-14 years? We decide to stay, it's a Saturday night, it's already late and indeed we all wanted to eat well and go to bed. In the end, the meal is satisfactory, but what a miserable experience! I do not even imagine the welcome that should be reserved for parents with small children who, unlike mine, eat neither oysters nor fish or shellfish.

I walked past this restaurant a few days ago and was taken by the menu posted at the entrance. Just back from perfect meal for 4, sharing a selection of delicious imaginative seafood dishes, then desserts. Complimented by excellent service, informative and friendly. A must return.
Z. D.
I was buzzing to come here whilst in Edinburgh but have been left fairly disappointed. The food is okay, extremely small portions even for tapas.
P. K.
Fresh and creative food, we tried the oysters and small plates and everything was amazing! We preferred the natural oysters than the dressed but we tried them as well and we also liked them. Even the seaweed coleslaw was something new. Definitely worth the price!
S. L.
Made our way to White Horse for a long awaited planned visit. Hot day so eagerly looked forward to a campari with a splash of soda and sliced orange. Charged £ 2.10 for the soda??!! Tad expensive.
Very quiet place, so lacked atmosphere. Checked out the menu and overpriced even for Edinburgh.
Sorry guys. Raise your game.
L. P. B.
Genuinely adored this place! Impeccable food with great attention to detail, and so fresh! Good selection of wine and the service was attentive, and I actually learnt a lot from the knowledgeable waitress. Thanks, will return!
D. L.
Perfectly kind. Tasty and fancy😍
S. J.
Had such a lovely night! We had oysters followed by the £22 lobster deal and it was so tasty! Lovely restaurant, music and staff. Definitely returning! Thank you again!!
E. S. (.
Fresh oysters from 3 Lochs around Scotland! And the happy hour 1£ at oyster make them taste even better :)
M.
Outstanding restaurant specialized in seafood and oysters. The service is excellent, the food very tasty, and all is very fresh. It is strongly recommended to book, considering the small place and the high demands.
L. G.
Modern seafood restaurant serving delicious food in chic, yet comfortable surroundings. Kind waiters.
J. B.
Tasty food! Nice wine. They had ran out of quite a few items when we went, but appreciated getting called beforehand to make us aware - good customer service!
K.
Been here a couple times for the oyster happy hour. Beautiful interior, very nice staff, fresh oysters and good drinks. Highly recommend!
T. P.
The food was great & the waitress was so nice! We spent alot of money & on our second bottle of wine...... and out of the blue! They told us they needed the table back, surely I thought! They should have told us at the start of our meal, anyway we were so disappointed & will never go back......
S. g.
One of the best seafood restaurants in Edinburgh you must try it ..
a. d.
Food is decent but the service and atmosphere is utterly disappointing.
W. S.
Lovely atmosphere, welcoming staff and delicious seafood. Dressed oysters are phenomenal. Will be back!
M. W.
Gorgeous seafood restaurant which has an incredible platter for 2 on the menu. Oysters were delicious and the staff are extremely friendly
S. L.
I love this restaurant, the cocktails are great, staff are super friendly and the food is oh so good.. The only reason i knocked off a star was the oysters could have been better (a little small) and the staff whilst lovely could have been a little more attentive
M. A.
Fantastic seafood Tapas. The Bbq Lobster Tail, Monk Fish Satay and Octopus were A*!
A. S.
Superbly created small plates, very good wine selection, great service, give it a try!
A. P.
What a wonderful place, buck a shuck! Ie £1per oyster and they were soooo tasty. The best meal we had whilst visiting Edinburgh. An absolute must.
P. A.
One of the best restaurants in Edinburgh, highly recommended.
J. T.
Good oysters. Buck a shuck at times. Good seafood. A nice place. Good staff. Fun menu. Please click 'like' if you like my reviews...
R. P.
Delicious food and a very pleasant ambience!
J. R.
It might have been an off day which is a shame, the service was really bad though. Almost impossible to get a drink and order food. We didnt even go at a busy time. The wait team seemed more interested in talking and tidying rather than serving customers. Disappointing as I'd wanted to try it for ages.
M. M.
Great service, great food and atmosphere... Also a very generous happy hour!

Small friendly pub with a nice and cosy performance space at the back. Good crowds.

Best Oyster House in Edinburgh. Staff always friendly and very accommodating. Our favorite place for happy hour.

Absolutely amazing. Fab atmosphere. Perfectly cooked food. Beautiful wine. Lovely staff. Highly recommend.
j. b.
Very nice and stylish restaurant.
J. F.
Great seafood and cosy atmosphere. Highly recommended.
C. C.
Recommend ordering either the hot plate seafood platter or the cold one. No need for both!
V. R.
Great selection of oysters and wine. That's basically the entire menu though, so don't recommend for vegetarians!
M. T.
Very fresh oysters & salmon)))
P. S.
Tiny bar with a back room. Good for a quiet drink but not easy to navigate when it's busy. You can hire the backroom, which is cool and ideal for a group.
G. W.
Really great oysters - and lots of other nice dishes - but get the oysters. Great to have a selection of varieties to try, plus they have tempura oysters which are awesome.
C. R.
Amazing selection of oysters in a stunning interior - but the food does speak for itself! Can’t go wrong on a weekday for buck a shuck!
R. M.
The White Horse is one of the oldest pubs in Edinburgh, but beyond that claim it's difficult to mark it out as truly special. If you pop through to the back area then it's a fun, comfortable place to have a nice drink and relax. The food is average and the service is not really much different to any other boozer in the area. Outside of peak hours the atmosphere feels laid back and chilled out so it's a good place to meet friends or escape for a pint and a good book or the the days papers. It's difficult to get really excited about the White Horse, nonetheless I've enjoyed myself whenever I've visited. Good without being great.
T. F.
Expensive dinning, food was good but lobster salad sharing portion is needing to be rectified...too small. Tempura squid prefer crispy battered rings.
M. S. M.
Excellent oysters, great variety and just for £1 during Happy Hour. A real gem in the heart of Edinburgh !
P. C.
Nice decor, great tapas style seafood, lovely oysters
A. H.
Genuinely superb service and brilliant food!! Highly recommend - very reasonably priced for what you get - shoutout to Johanna who was a very attentive and knowledgeable waitress!!

cosy location, slightly overpriced oysters and scallops best dishes on the menu - probably better places in Edinburgh but if u want quiet romantic place then go here

Nice place for fish and sea food. Sliglty overpriced, but it is a cozy and comfy place to have a nice meal. The food was tasty with a good presentation.

Delicious oysters. A very helpful staff. All around a lovely experience.

When they said that this was Edinburgh's greatest pies, I assumed it was marketing rhetoric, but Holy-wow Batman!! The haggis pie was out of this world, with a rich gravy and creamy mash that complimented the spices so perfectly... Just typing this review leaves me craving it again!
Really average decor, but a great soundtrack. They claim to be the oldest pub in Edinburgh, but who cares. Go in, order a pie, and your life will be complete.
D. N.
The oysters, service, and all our entrees were excellent. Friendly and wonderful.
R. P.
If you're a fan of seafood you have to visit this place. Amazing food and great service.
S. R.
We came in because we'd heard it was the oldest pub in the area so we were a little disappointed that there wasn't more in the decor alluding to this, but the service was excellent and friendly so we'd definitely come back for a relaxed drink.
M. M.
Efficient, friendly staff. Delectable dishes served unconventionally.

Worth trying all the different oysters (battered and pickled etc) - all very different but got their own charms!
