Reviews of Barshu Restaurant
L. C. (. P.
This restaurant is exceptional and is one of my favorites in London. I love how they value the food quality especially the selection of raw materials and seasoning. You can tell they use quite authentic seasoning imported from China. The food taste is consistent, unlike some similar Chinese restaurants where the same dish tastes differently each day.
They never mess up with food. Chief’s recommendations never go wrong.

The dishes of Sichuan cuisine are incredible diverse. Barshu is making Sichuan cuisine to the next level. This restaurant is truly the No.1 of Sichuan cuisine. All the dishes are of the finest Sichuan art and definitely worth a try. A must order is ma po Tofu. The perfect balance between seasoning, spiciness and tofu flavour. If you want Real Sichuan cuisine which reminds you of your home Sichuan, go for Barshu!

Absolutely love this restaurant. The food is delicious, and Barshu offers a great range of dishes so everyone will find something to enjoy or something new to try. The portions are generous and great for sharing. The menu features a photo of each dish, along with a chilli rating which is really helpful.
My favourite food was the roast sea bass immersed in the seasoned spicy sauce and left a pleasant after taste in my mouth. Authentic and very tasty.
The restaurant itself is clean and well decorated - not a huge space, but it doesn't need to be. I highly recommend this restaurant for anyone who wants to try the fiery flavours of China's Sichuan province.

Barshu was recommended to us by a good friend. Me and my wife went there for lunch, from the moment we walked in the service was phenomenal, professional, polite and simply flawless and that's just the service! We ordered 6 dishes to share and the food was simply the best Chinese cuisine we have ever tasted. All fresh, great portions, exceptional taste it was all just 5 star! I strongly recommend this place I'm sure no one would be disappointed. Thank you Winston, Yefie and the Barshu team! We will be back!

Very nice authentic Asian food. Great customer service. Staff were very attentive and food came out of the kitchen very quickly. I highly recommend this restaurant.
K. H. K.
This is one of my favourite restaurants! My whole family and few friends now come to this place at least ones a month! I’m a regular! The staff are wonderful, always greet and welcoming plus the food is out of this world! It’s authentic Chinese- perfect for those who enjoy spice as some of the dishes are to die for! We have been coming to this place for over eight years and never get tired! Perfect for vegetarians as none vegetarians too!
I. P.
I loved the food here. It felt like if I was in an immersive experience in the Sichuan's cuisine. The food is very spicy 🔥 but that's what this is about. We enjoyed the 3 dishes that we ordered. The restaurant is not the cheapest in town but the food experience worth every penny.
K. T.
Barshu is the best Si Chuan restaurant. It is unbeatable. Without my partner I would have never have known this place existed.
Food, perfect.
Service, delightful.
Toilet trips after eating here, unforgettable.
M. S.
Barshu is a Sichuan restaurant in London, also is the best Sichuan restaurant in Soho area. Best of the authentic flavours of Sichuan.
F. O.
This is now one of our favourite restaurants in London. Second time visiting and we are not disappointed. Welcoming and attentive staff and of course the food is lovely. We will be back soon.
M. D.
A friend from Shanghai took me her and we had a fantastic time. I'm not an expert but my friend knows Szechuan food and she says its some of the best in town. We had sea bass cooked in pepper broth, a fantastic cucumber salad, lobster, and the best softshell crab as starter. Superb staff, knowledgeable and friendly. Highly recommend.
c. l.
One of the best places for Sichuan food in London. We were not disappointed, service was great too. Dishes I would recommend: twice cooked pork, ants climbing a tree, mouthwatering chicken, water boiled beef.
A. C.
Authentic and very spicy Sichuan food - the sea bass and mapo tofu are stellar dishes. Fast and friendly service with a call button on the table!
M. G.
Great food and really good service. Staff were really helpful and tentative without being overbearing. Although not cheap, the portions are very generous so if you go as a group of at least 4 you'll find it's not expensive. The lamb chops were incredible and far too much for two of us! We also had tofu with prawns and asparagus with minced pork. Both excellent. I also really recommend the smacked cucumber, delicious! I definitely recommend this place

Expensive Soho Szechuan Restaurant
The food here was tasty and spicy, but too expensive for what it actually is. We waited close to 30 mins before someone came to our table despite visibly indicated we were ready, and watching the table next to us sit down and have food in front of them before we even ordered. Paid £80 for 2 mains and some fried rice.
I ordered the Pork Ribs in Cumin - some pieces were dry and inedible, some pieces were juicy and hot. My partner ordered the pockmarked old woman’s bean curd and he found it absolutely inedible. For a dish that was not listed as spicy - it made both of us cry at the table.
Very crowded restaurant, too expensive for what it’s worth, a bit overrated. Bill Nighy was sitting out the front though, so good for celebrity spotting.
M. A. F.
One of the best Sichuanese restaurants in London!!
T. T.
The dry-wok was really authentic Sichuang flavour.
A. B.
Beautiful experience, authentic flavors of the Sichuan cuisine I appreciated so much when living in China. Every dish we ordered was spot on, hard to keep from ordering the full menu as loads of favourites! Highly recommend will definitely be back many more times.
a.
One of those restaurant sometime food Amazing sometime terrible. Sometime welcoming sometime make you feel very uncomfortable like they really don't want you there. You decide good luck.
D. L.
Had a lukewarm experience here. I'll start off by saying that the service is nice and prices are fair in my opinion. The food on the other hand is disappointing :( had soups which were extremely regular or even a bit below that, same for the spring roll. The mains were even less good - the shrimp dish had an amount of peppercorn in it that made it unedible, the pork was extremely salty. The beef noodles were good. Our dishes also didn't come together but had too big of a time gap between them. The menu got a huge variety and a lot of things sounds interesting and tasty, maybe we didn't choose well.
G. M. A.
Food is very similar to a couple of the other nearby Sichuan restaurants (which isn't a bad thing at all). The comparative price markup is basically paying for the setting, which is significantly nicer than the competition. Staff handled our large table well and were better at remembering our orders than we were. Good stuff.
J. F.
Nicely decorated Sichuan restaurant. Highly recommend their farmhouse fried rice. Favourite out of the 3 dishes we ordered. Quite pricey but expected as it is in China town.
L. “. C.
Highly recommended Chinese Restaurant serving Sichuan dishes. The spice level is quite good and the staff are all nice. Cleanliness and food quality is very good.
A. L.
We had such a wonderful time. Brilliant service from Oscar who guided us through the menu that was very new to us.
The fold was just brilliant and we will be back!!
B. H.
Some of the best food I've ever had - service was extra snappy and quick too. I forgot to order the fish so will definitely be back for it!
S. H.
An absolutely wonderful evening, filled with authentic spicy Sichuan food, incredible decoration and excellent service. How they pack so much flavour into their food, I don't know! Try the Dry-Fried Green Beans!
All I know is, if you haven't tried BARSHU, you haven't experienced the best authentic Chinese food in London.
10/10, highly recommended!
S. L.
Was invited here by a friend. The food is really spicy and the staff really helpful. The menu is not too overwhelming which was good. Recommended for chilli lovers!
思.
I've been in London a month and this is so far the best and most authentic sichuan restaurant🥰 but do be aware that many dishes are tooo much for 2 or even 3.
S. W.
All time favourite Sichuan restaurant. The best century eggs and smacked cucumbers in town. :)
R. E.
Delicious chinese food from Sichuan in the heart of Soho. Good service, big portion and spicy (less to very spicy). For some dishes is possible to ask less spicy than normal. Watch out the sichuan pepper..
J. R.
Excellent, authentic Sichuan cuisine. Looking forward to going back. Charming and patient service.
B. L.
One of the best Sichaun food that you can have in London. I had the sliced sea bass with fresh chillies and sichuan peppercorns one of the best soup that I ever had. It was immense, you need like 5 people to finish it (we were two). All the food and service was amazing. Find it overpriced and sometime difficult to understand if the plates are for 1 or 5
C. R.
Amazing food. Quick service. Will come back again
J. C.
Some of the best Sichuan food in London. Slightly more expensive than Sichuan Folk and less friendly staff, but dishes are perfectly and consistently executed. There is also a tasty bottle of Gewürztraminer on the menu that does something special to the whole experience.
M. D.
Great outdoor seating, very tasty dumplings (chicken was a highlight!) and really friendly staff. Would definitely return. Prices are quite high - especially the alcohol.
D. K.
Great food. Fish in chilli oil and fried chicken are must haves. It is extremely expensive for Sichuan food though.
S. F.
The food here was pretty impressive. There is a great selection and it tastes really good.
S. K.
Great Sichuan food. Could be a little spicier but probably hits a happy medium for most people here.
M.
Sichuan food is famously spicy! This was spicy, but not as spicy as I thought it'd be. (Which was a good thing for me as I can't tolerate extreme heat, although I love it).
Steamed seabass (~£26) - this was good. Meat was a little mushy than I prefer, but to be expected without the availability of fresh fish.
Ma po tofu (~£11) - more spices used than the average ma po tofu dish, it was nice. The only thing is it was very oily.
Overall a good experience, I would go again, although I would try other dishes.
R. H.
Authentic Sichuan dishes with ingredients fly direct from China. Clean and prompt service.
J. K.
Delicious authentic Sichuan food! I worked in Sichuan years ago and this is the first place I've found outside of China serving up those real Chengdu flavours. Very generous portions, lovely service, wonderful decor. I've taken dates and work mates and family to Bar Shu, it's really my go-to in Soho for a nice dinner. Big fan of the smacked cucumber, gong bao prawns, the sea bass is also a big treat. Get down to Soho and support real Chinese food!
S. T.
Simply the best!
Had an amazing experience in Barshu for the second time running. Spoilt for choice with the variety of dishes on the menu and the drinks were both creative and delicious. The food arrived within minutes of ordering and there are no words to describe the fiesta of flavor that erupts in your mouth with every bite. Excellent service, captivating atmosphere and an all around perfect visit every time.
Needless to say, there will be a 3rd, 4th and 12th visit.
J. T.
Great Sze Chuan dishes. Good ambience and decorations. Pricey if you can afford it.
C. C.
As always, this restaurant has found its way into my heart. The service has been as friendly as always, and I have visited for more than 10 years, now. It is great to see that, despite Corona, the service runs at the highest standards. What a pleasure!
O. O.
Great food, and lots of choice on the menu, food can be quite spicy if you want and like this.
O. S.
Probably the best Chinese food I've had. The mapo tofu (pockmarked old lady's beancurd and pork) was a particular highlight, but all of it was fantastic.
W. Y.
taste really good, even for someone come from Sichuan, like me🤓. A little bit expensive, but worth the money. The service is very good.
S. T.
One of the most authentic Szechuan restaurants in town! The boiled fish pot, water boiled beef (in chilli oil), fish flagrant aubergine and spicy chicken appetizers are our go-to dishes. They also have spicy dry pot which is delicious but not the spicest. If you’re looking for authentic Szechuan food, you’ve found the right place.
K.
Fantastic food all round , chicken dumplings and chicken peanut meal were perfect
N. C.
My girlfriend booked the table to show my sons authentic Sichuan cooking from her home Chinese province. We were thrilled by the culinary experience that was provided to us and would definitely return. The restaurant is just a short stroll from China Town and definitely worth the walk.
M. T.
Marvelous original Chinese restaurant...
Second time here and is more better again..
Congratulations...
Keep going ...
Tourist and everyone here in London must try it ....
B. B.
Get that sechuan spice in yo life,
Go ready to sweat it out in the best way possible
M. B.
Food was tasty but they rushed us along and out a bit though.
D. S.
Excellent food which is true to the Sichuan food you will find in cities such as Chongqing. Very impressed with the food and the true flavours that they use. The staff are nice and courteous with prompt service and a lovely decor.
The prices are a little bit steep (especially if you are used to prices in mainland China) but the food is very good and it is in line with the pricing of other restaurants in the area.
A great experience.
C. H.
One of the best places in London for Sichuan food.
E. A.
Delicious Sichuan food. I love dan dan noodle here. The noodle is chewy and very nice.
P. K.
Very good high quality food and excellent service. I had the mapo tofu made vegan together with fish fragnant aubergine. Both very nice and huge portions. Only minus was that I asked them extra spicy which didn't happen. But apart from that, extremely high quality and delicious though also very expensive.
A. A.
Great food very cosy and amazing customer service.
K. D.
Enjoyed our visit here last week. Walked in, warmly welcomed, and got a table right away. The space is large for soho, with a warm and inviting atmosphere.
The menu had a nice mix of traditional and unique dishes. Several veg friendly options as well. The cold noodle salad and spicy tofu main dish were delicious.
Our server was lovely, however we did struggle with communicating in English a bit. As well we had to ask for our side of rice a couple times after our main dishes arrived.
We’ll be back to check out other menu items.
C. C.
Good quality, authentic food in a pleasant environment
N. H.
I was there with a group of 3 friends. We ordered the lamb, serving portion was huge well marinated with spices, very tasty. We also tried their signature aubergine which is served in a mortar looks cute and appetising. The other dishes we love was the dry wok potatoes goes very well with rice. And lastly we ordered the dessert that looks like a mini hamburger it’s actually an ice-cream creamy and nice.
The overall experience was great, service was courteous the waiter were attentive. We will be back again for sure can’t wait to try out the other dishes on the menu.
S. C.
Very tasty and authentic Sichuan food in a city with many Sichuan restaurants. I don't believe Barshu is that much better than other Sichuan restaurants in London, thus the 4 stars. Not that expensive really compared to other Sichuan restaurants in London and elsewhere outside of China. We had good and prompt service and the staff did not push any dishes on us mentioned by other reviews. I believe the reason some people got bad recommendations or too much food is that they don't know Sichuan food. This is NOT your typical Cantonese restaurant or "fake" Sichuan restaurant (Cantonese food with peppers in it), this is the real thing and familiar dishes like General Tsao's chicken is NOT what you get (try red cooked pork or water boiled fish for example). Do a bit of research on Sichuan food before you go and you will be rewarded to a very good meal.
T. K.
Aesthetically pleasing both the outside and the interior of Barshu making it stand out among other restaurants in the area. The atmosphere inside is always pleasant and cheerful with friendly staff giving excellent customer service and Chinese lanterns to add to the experience of dining here.
The inside of Barshu is very spacious with a lot of seating’s available, ground floor and 1st floor for regular dining with your partner or a group of friends, and the 2nd floor for a large party of friends and families. They serve a wide variety of drinks, wine, cocktails and dessert making it an excellent place to stop by after work with friends and colleagues.
The food here is decent, but not 100% authentic Sichuan food, the food here has changed quite a bit, they've toned down the spiciness in most of their dishes and the cooking style has changed as well to accommodate children and other customers. The price is, of course, £££, not a place for a cheap dinner but if you want a good experience with Sichuan food, then this is the only place in Soho.
T. Q.
It is one of my to-go places for Sichuan cuisine since it s not far from home. The shared fish pot is not as spicy as it used to be! Love the minced pork and green beans!
T. P. W.
Best dish is the sea bass cooked in Sichuan oil and soja. Their veggie sauté is really nice too. However the service isn’t that great, their staffs are like robot with no emotions. If attitude is important to you, then you should consider. Otherwise it’s a great place for Sichuan food lovers!
N. B.
Barshu was one of my good experience in trying out Chinese food in that area. The place is very nice and staff is very welcoming. This place is little out of China town. The place offers decent number of vegetarian dishes but they were also happy to remove meat from other preparations to make it veg friendly as well. Mapo tofu is a must try.
n. s.
The food was delicious! Our favorite were the water spinach and 'pockmarked old lady' tofu.
The staff was attentive but not too much in your face. Only downside would be that it's a bit expensive. Next time I will go to their sister restaurant across the road as it seems equally nice and a bit less pricey.
A. K.
Great food and service! Would recommend and definitely will come back!
D. E.
First time last night. What a revelation. Food was amazing. Many ingredients I had never had before like ducks tongue. Everying was really well flavoured. Also some seriously spicy dishes. The service was fast and friendly. The menu is beautifully, very informative and fascinating to read. If you've had Cantonese food before this restaurant will open your eyes to so much more.
A. L. M.
FOOD - go for the fresh Sichuan experience. interesting and certainly a liberal use of intense Sichuan pepper. I really enjoyed the beef brisket with tofu. Deep rich flavours..
SERVICE and decor - fairly good. Helpful service. Great is having multiple rooms so groups can dine on different levels
But the wine!
One doesnt go dining Chinese for the wine but still.... the wine ( Macon Blanc Villages) wasn't great at all for 35gbp a bottle. I honestly thought it was counterfeit Burgundy. It's has a unique herbal nose I haven't encountered in French wine. Ferns and dry candy. It wasn't even recognisable as Chardonnay. And yes I tasted it on a fresh palate before having any food. I also let it warm in my glass, as it was served too cold. I looked it up to check it was wine..... Any one have an issue with the wine? (Macon Blanc Villages Domaine Perelles 2015 (France)... In France it seems to be very economically priced.
X. W.
good restaurant overall, great Sichuan food, can't fault it at all except that ooking is not.consistent sometimes.
Went there again last night and the quality has really deteriorated, the chicken with chillies was over cooked, hot and sour potato noodles too hot to the point of bitter and no sour, shredded potato was good but portion was so small, tea tree mushroom super salty and minimum mushroom. The dumplings were not good as well. 60 pct of the dishes we orders were not good. Not sure what is happening, hope they get better.
P. K.
I have been to Barshu several times and it's always been a wonderful meal. The food is spicy, but full of depth of flavour. It's not cheap, but it's not a rip-off considering the quality of the food and the location.
A. M.
We loved our evening here. The food was delicious and authentic. Don't expect stock standard Chinese. Not cheap but worth it. The following I would highly recommend trying
the Barshu Red-Braised Pork and the Chengdu Dry-Braised Sea Bass. The Gong Bao Chicken with Peanuts is good.
S. Y.
The restaurants location is good but the food is very average.
S. A.
The best Sichuan in town, period. Barshu is consistently great -- be sure to order the Mapu tofu & dry-fried green beans. Yes, it's pricier than some of the other restaurants around Chinatown -- because it's better. Well worth it.
K. L.
Went here with friends last week-end. I've been to a couple of Chinese places in Soho, so was expecting some very good food, especially when looking at the prices! Unfortunately, they didn't quite live up to my standards: the dishes were very oily and some of the ingredients tasted of mould (the garlic and the mushrooms) - this really shouldn't happen! Also the dessert menu is rather dissapointing... you can definitely get nicer food for less money in the area.
O. N.
Excellent Sichuan restaurant. Chinese food is one of my favorite cuisines, and as I like spicy food, I always fancy a Sichuan restaurant. To be honest it is hard to find a good Chinese restaurant in London, even in ChinaTown. It is nothing like New York Chinatown. But this restaurant is fantastic, extremely tasty and well made beautiful dishes. I love it. Highly recommended. And the service is excellent as well as the inside decor, with a real Chinese feel. Perfect.
B. N.
I am no expert on authenticity, but this was everything I look for in Sichuan food. Plenty of chillies, plenty of sichuan pepper, and a proper lip-tingling experience. Had the spicy dry chicken with chillies and a hot and sour soup to get us started. The dishes arrived very quickly and were absolutely delicious. We also ordered mapo-tofu (a personal favourite), and tried the dry-fried asparagus. Everything was perfect; we could possibly have handled even more spice, but this is a classy kind of place :-D [£55 for four dishes and two beers ain't too bad for London]
p. r.
If you love Sichuan food, Barshu is as good as you'll find anywhere in London at the price and the staff are really nice. Some of the more negative criticisms must be from competitors or people with unrealistic expectations. If you want Michelin star prices go to Hutong.
R. G.
Awesome awesome food.
First time with szechuan food and it was awesome! The flavoursome chicken is just that, the ribs are delicious and just about everything else was too! Not too sure about the duck tongues, but that's more a personal taste...
Definitely pop in here!
J. P. (.
Brought family for inlaws anniversary. Everyone enjoyed. They need more veggie dishes but can alter slightly the lotus root fry wok. It was pretty authentic otherwise. (We live our East a while).
Z. H.
Food: Very good. The kind of Szechuan food you won't find at most places. the numbing Szechuan peppers will allow you to take more chili than you thought possible. You'll also find all the find all the odd bits of animals that you wouldn't normally be served elsewhere.
Service: Prompt but fair.
Ambience: Very cool interior for English people, thought some Chinese friends found it tacky. I personally liked it.
Price: Expensive, but worth it for a special occasion.
Worth a visit: Definitely
H. B.
THE....BEST....SICHUAN... restaurant I have ever been to.
J. O.
Absolutely loved it. The restaurant had a lovely vibe, the staff were friendly and helpful, booking couldn't be easier (can be done online) and most importantly the food was delicious! Didn't have a single bad dish.
A. “.
Nice atmosphere, very good service and friendly staffs. Food wise is not the best Szechuan food I have had in London. I found their flavours are more mild than authentic Szechuan food but understand not a lot of people can take very spicy food. Probably would be a good choice to introduce Szechuan food to westerners but I miss the spicy bold flavours that Szechuan cuisine is well known of.
J. O.
Fantastic customer service, clean environment and excellent food! Would highly recommend.
S. T.
Interesting Chinese food....dishes not normally done in Chinatown. The jump over Shaftesbury Ave has given this restaurant some flair. I would pre-book as quite busy. Prices about the same...slightly more perhaps than the usual fare. Recommended.
A. B.
Lovely food, great service
O. H.
Lovely Sichuan cuisine including the boiled seabass in chilli oil and excellent melt-in-your-mouth mapo tofu. Service was not bad either for a Chinese restaurant.
I. C.
The food is good, but very very spicy. We were a large group of 12 people and the staff was very attentive, and made sure we were served promptly, which was nice.
A meal for one person is about 20 pounds, so the prices are not very high.
W. L.
Delicious Szechuan cousine. Food come quick.
J. C. V.
Good location
Nice and classic decoration
Prices are a bit expensive
l. z.
My personal favorite. Although lots of chilli used in most of dishes, however the chef managed to control their spiciness to an acceptable level, not so spicy but very balanced flavour
A. S.
My annual visit to London to see my lovely friend. She booked us a table at this gem of a restaurant. On arrival we were seated upstairs in what was a busy restaurant at 6:30pm. The menu choice is good and there are some different meals to choose from. We started with some deep fried meatball type things in crispy batter theses were accompanied by a garlic and chilli salt to dip into a chicken with peanut dish which was coated in a delicious sauce pigs trotters our out there choice and whilst a little fatty they again tasted delicious and we had firery beef noodle type dish and a first for my tastebuds I sampled some chicken fried rice again both delicious with a bottle of house red this all came to £81 for the two of us which included a tip. Would love to return one day and sample some more of there delicious food! Keep up the good work!
W. C. T.
Friendly and attentive staff! Great authentic Chinese food. Quality ingredients!
It is definitely not Indian in taste as reported by the other user! Fragrance chicken reported by other user is wrong too. It is supposed to be made that way.
P. W.
Top notch. Every dish was delicious.
L. N.
Although reading reviews, I wish I'd found this place when it was even spicier, it was still the best Sichuan food I've had in London. I could taste the pepper and the chili. A little bit expensive but that's to be expected in the centre of London.
D.
The decor of the restaurant made me the biggest impression. It seemed authentic and the lightning was sustained and dimmed which was appropriate for a nice dinner. In addition, the food was excellent, with lots of flavors and spices mixed together. I'd surely go back.
A. S.
Food - Really Good Sichuan food, Recommend the Thin-sliced pork rolls in a spicy, garlicky sauce & the Bang Bang chicken slivers for starters. Fragrant chicken in a pile of chillies, Sea bass with sizzling spices & the Gong Bao prawns with cashew nuts are all really good! Though priced at the higher end, typical meal for two with wine will be £60+.
Ambience - Typical China Town Restaurant.
Service - Not really up to the mark & lets down the overall experience!
S. H.
Bar Shu has updated their menu recently to include allergens and more vegetarian dishes, so I'm well pleased! The smacked cucumbers are a standout favorite, and the asparagus is a new delight.
C. d. S.
Part of a group of three other restaurants in Soho. Authentic wooden furniture. Picture menu makes it easier to order. Quick service and delicious food. Some dishes have alot of red chilli which I understood are cooked with for flavour and not to eat.
S. S.
Authentic Sechuan cuisine in the heart of Soho. If you're looking for that genuine Sechuan burn then you can't go far wrong than to visit Bar Shu. Beautifully decorated with hanging lanterns and dark wood. The food is served with an excellent service. The Mapo Tofu was excellent and the green beans tasty. The Dan Dan noodles could have been better but a good experience all round.
C. V.
This place is great if you want to try a different side to Chinese food. Definitely not for people who don't like spicy food but if you are looking to try something different then it's definitely a great place. A bit expensive and the staff were a little curt but overall still enjoyable.
T. C.
This was my fourth or fifth visit to Barshu. I have never been disappointed with the food, and have always been slightly shocked by the bill, and this time was no exception. We had the saliva ("mouth-watering") chicken, cold jelly fish, fish-and-pickles soup, and "like-a-bear-paw" (made from pig trotters), and dan dan noodles. The saliva chicken were outstanding, and the other dishes were all very nice. The soup could have done with a bit more sugar and about twice as much water, but used real fillets and fish chunks, so kudos to Barshu. This, with rice for one and tea for two, came to just under £90, not a small sum by London Sichuan standards. A good choice if you feel like splashing out for some well cooked Sichuan. Not the very best in London, but still one of my favourites in central London.
A. G.
Perfect for those who love spicy food.
Big variety of dishes, the beer was good as well.
Very traditional place.
N. Y.
Went there for one of birthday meal and the food is FANTASTIC. A little bit pricy, but typical China town pricing for GREAT FOOD. the eggplant appetiser is a must try!

Top top service. They also have 2 private rooms up on the 3rd floor. Very nice .
E. K.
If you like your food with some heat, Barshu is the place to be. One of three Szechuan restaurants on Frith Street that are owned by the same family, this place has served me some of the best Szechuan food I've had the pleasure of trying!
One particular highlight was the sea bass, served in a steaming hotpot of oil and chillies, The chillies - which did look a little daunting at first - were removed before we ate, leaving us with a dish that retained some of the heat in the perfectly cooked fish.
I'd also recommend the chopped fine beans, plus the lamb knuckle, A little on the pricey side but a must-visit.
R.
Water boiled sea bass was mediocre at best, very monotone flavour and unauthentic. not enough Chilli or sichuan peppercorns, seems like they skimped out on other spices too. very mild flavour. The sea bass did not seem fresh either.
J. K.
Ideal place to have a fancy Sze Chuan dish. It's a spice food lovers paradise. Everything is authentic. Just be prepared to pay a fair bit more for the dining experience. If ever in doubt, ask for Ms. Yoke Moi for recommendations.
M. C.
Sublime. Best Szechuan restaurant in Soho!!
A. S.
Excellent place for (very) spicy food. The Szechuan cuisine is quite different from what you get in most Chinese restaurants, so it's also a great place to experience some new kinds of flavours and dishes.
J. B.
My favourite Chinese restaurant, absolutely delicious!
S. V.
Brilliant food, for a starter I can highly recommend the 'Fragrant chicken with chilli and Sichuan pepper' great flavour with some really good heat. As a main the 'Gong Bao chicken with peanuts' is lush.
The 'Iced Sweetburger' is a fun dessert, an ice cream shaped as a beef burger.
You really can't go wrong.
M. A.
Terrible service, disinterested staff. The food is average to good. But I've had loads of better Chinese / sichuan food, and this place certainly isn't worth the price
J. C. M.
Try the cucumber salad with garlic or tofu salad with cilantro.
M. K.
Delicious Szechuan Chinese joint in SoHo. Dumplings are good. Ants climbing a tree is just ok. Broiled beef in extremely spicy sauce is great. Pork knuckle is good. Shimp with cashew is good. LiLi is spicy and good. Fragrent chicken w schwan sauce is not great. The ladies liked the Strirfry season vegetables w galic. Hot & sour soup is superb but spicy. Each entre is enough for two people. Decent wine.
J. A.
Good service, nice food
C. F.
Good place to eat exotic foods (duck tongue, sea snail, jellyfish, etc). Place is clean, though they started cleaning the downstairs with bleach before the restaurant officially closed so the smell came up to the eating area which was not good. Make sure to come a couple hours before closing to avoid that.
L. T.
Great flavours, great service.
M. T.
Excellent tasty Sichuan food - from conventional to exotic. After reading Fuschia Dunlop's Sichuan Cookery, I was determined to try the real thing and Barshu has never disappointed. Occasionally overloaded service - although never a problem.
X. C.
Ordered a total of 12 dishes here and we all loved every one of them! Wide variety of delicious food to choose from! :)
S. L. K.
Fabulous- best Sichuan food I have had outside Sichuan! Varied menu and great service. 6 stars out of 5
D. D.
I go here quite regularly with a group of friends from work. Everything I've tried has been delicious and usually pretty spicy. Highly recommend the aubergine and the long beans.
J. H.
Good Szechuan restaurant, stands out a bit from the usual places in Chinatown. Had a couple of good tofu dishes here including the "bear's paw tofu". Maybe not as many vegetarian options as some other places, but what I had I enjoyed.
M. S.
One of the first Sichuan restaurants in London. Higher end than some other places, but great food and friendly service. Wind dried beef, seabass, crab all great. Cosy atmosphere too.
S. P.
Fish in boiling oil was good but could have been better seasoned and spicier. Pak Choi was a bit over cooked. Overall, good size portions.
A. L.
A large menu to choose from. Really good Sichuan food and fairly reasonably priced. Well worth the Michelin Guide recommendation!
C. L.
Service was great, food is devine but not if you have any dietaries. However restaurant does clearly state that they can't accommodate some dietaries which is good.
G. A.
Great for some seriously spicy Chinese food. Not quite 5 stars since a little pricey. But a great option off the beaten track of China Town
X. Z.
Amazing food, restaurant decorated with style
C. S.
The food is really good as it is spicier than most in the area. Service is ok and we love being seated upstairs.
R. Y.
Real Sichuan food. Used to be a Michelin recommended restaurant, back then it was top notch. But since 2014 the service and quality drops considerably.
B. j.
My Favourite restuarant in London. Unbelievable. If it's your first time, try my standard menu: Ants Climbing Trees (bean thread noodles), stir fried potato slivers, kung bao chicken (real stuff - not the western nonsense ), chicken wings and a side of rice. Mix some rice, noodles and potato in your little bown and eat the meats on top as you like. Not ridiculously spocy if you're scared but the perfect punch.
This place is the greatest!
J. S.
Excellent and authentic Szechuan food. Don't expect Chinese takeaway food, but instead upscale and quality dishes. Not cheap though but worth it.
B. K.
finally, authentic sichuanese cuisine in london! real-deal ingredients (sichuan peppercorns and preserved mustard greens imported directly from china), a menu featuring dishes you would find in typical sichuanese restaurants in china, and a team of chefs brought over from sichuan all add up to fabulous cuisine, bursting with strong flavors typical of the region. service (from a legion of headset-wearing staff) is extremely efficient and responsive, though the staff bluntly warn customers at booking time that they can only hold a table for one and a half hours. easily the best chinese food in l
a. m.
Great chinese food! Far from standard MSG-laden, takeaway fare. You can be adventurous with pig's ear or tripe... I stuck with seabass, aubergine and green beans - all were amazing!
d. t.
if you like your szechuan peppercorns, then you'll be happy here. cute interior. we always seem to end up ordering too many dishes, as the choice is immense, so watch out!
D. G.
Absolutely not the best Szechuan restaurant in town. The staff were extremely rude (emphasis is on rushing you through your meal as quickly as possible), the food was very overpriced and the dishes themselves were far too salty. Avoid.
C. F.
A regular for us my girl just loves the spicy fish, as for me there is lots to choose from spicy lamb is interesting. Not for the ones who like vanilla and non spicy, one for the connoisseur.
C. M.
Excellent authentic Chinese food. Never been disappointed when been there. Good service decent price and excellent food. Try to expand your boundaries by trying something new.
F. L.
Great ambient, the best Sichuan Restaurant in town. Always busy but never feel too crowded. Waitering staff are friendly.
M. J.
Really well cooked food and the staff were great. Could do with more vegan options, though.
p. b.
Real food. Good service. Been several times and will visit again. I live in York so it's quite a way to go for good food.
K. M.
Good food & service, bit disappointing to make a booking though to be put in the empty 1st floor dining area which has no ambience. Could have just walked in for that experience.
S. L.
Good service, staffs are so polite and friendly! Food was amazing, good portion for the price as well! Will definitely be back!
J. L.
Really good food. I recommend a group visit so that you can order various dishes for reasonable price.
H. Z.
It is one of my favourite Sichuan restaurants in London which is much cheaper and less crowded than the touristy restaurants arcoss the road in China Town.
E. P.
Good food, interesting menu but quite pricey considering you have China town on your door step and other places provide similar quality food at cheaper prices.
A. V.
The food choice is good but not very kid friendly in my opinion.
The staff could be nicer..friendlier and a little smile makes you comfortable..can be done not so tough😉
M. B.
Excellent food and good service. Yes, it is pricey, but it is probably the best food I've eaten this side of Hong Kong. A great lunch, we will be back.
P. C.
Fantastic traditional Chinese food, although a bit expensive. Service is not the best but the food makes up for it.
C. L.
Vegetables were nicely cooked. Meat dishes flavoursome, but stingy on the portion size.
B. R.
oh yeah baby its good!
P. T. (.
I have been there twice and I think the level of chiliness was higher the second time, but well I went for a second time so it was already great the first time :)
There are a lot of tasty dishes like the boiled sea bass, the chicken in a pile of chili, the dry beef, the beans...
Everything I tasted was delicious but I didn't take note of the names unfortnatelyso you will have to try!
K. M.
My favourite restaurant in Soho. So reliable and a delicious array of dishes that you could never tire of. Try the pork belly and ants climbing a tree.
S. T.
Decent Chinese Szechuan food but probably lack of variety in style - everything we ordered tasted almost the same, covered with chilli and Szechuan pepper!
M. K.
The staff were surprisingly pleasant and even made recommendations, which we enjoyed. Food was authentic and delicious, although slightly expensive.
J. R.
Large menu. Friendly staff. At least to me and my party who have been coming continuously every week in various combinations since 2015, even though I live in another country. My favorite, obvz.
s. h.
Sichuan food, spicy and hot. They have a good wine list but beer is better than wine personally
K. R.
Different (szechuan/sichuan) chinese cuisine, with a wide menu (and some other region's food): not all 'hot' and a visual as well as taste treat.
E. K.
Awesome food. Pretty busy so was hard to get waiters/waitresses attention. Otherwise nothing to fault
E. P.
Seriously delicious food with interesting textures and sensations. Polite, attentive service.
R. w. R.
Best quality spicy Chinese cuisine in this part of London. Owned by the same people as BaoziInn round the corner, won't disappoint
d. i.
Super tasty food. I recommend going in a group and sharing plates. Often busy but worthy
M. Y.
Very good
M. T.
Great restaurant..had a meal with 2 close friends here and wasn't disappointed at all.Great food
S. G.
The prawn we ordered didn't taste very fresh. Service is nice, but the food is not spicy enough.
r. g.
This is a great Sichuan restaurant. Highly recommended you won't be disappointed.
D. S.
Authentic sichuan food that is.amongzt best in London. Some dishes lacked as much spice and freshness of years gone by.
C. W.
Good and nice, but beware of spiciness
M.
The food wasn't bad, although it is very overpriced for what you get. Plates for one person are around 20 pounds.
J. A.
Food was not as spicy as expected, but still excellent quality. Its pretty damn pricey, especially the fish dishes
P. M.
Great restaurant. A little more pricey than its sister restaurant across the road, but deliciously spicy nonetheless.
C. T.
Authentic and delicious Sichuan cuisine, and friendly and attentive service. A great place to visit.
L. L.
Amazing Sichuan food if you like spicy flavor, definitely one of the best Sichuan restaurants in London.
D. J.
Always had good food and friendly/professional service here. Have visited a few times in recent years.
J. G.
Higher end than some other places, but great food and friendly service. Wind dried beef, seabass, crab all great. will by back
R. W.
Expensive, but probably the best Sichuan restaurant outside of China. The Shui zhu yu [水煮肉] is particularly good.
S. H.
Reasonably priced, big portions and very friendly service. We will definitely visit that place again in the near future.
D. W.
Delightful selection of delicacies with an emphasis on Sichuan.
J. D.
Good food. Very authentic. Great spicy beef!
A. D.
Fantastic food and very similiar to food in China. The Chinese eat here which is a gokd sign. Quite expensive though which detracts a bit.
J. N.
Delicious food, great service. Authentic Sichuan flavor.
S. D.
Really nice. Took a bit of finding but the vegetarian dishes were delicious - favourite was the the smashed cucumber
O. G.
Overpriced for Chinese but to be expected for the location. Generally good food and attentive staff.
G. J.
Food is truly scrumptious. Staff delightful. Will definitely be going back.
Y. X.
One of the go to places for Sichuan restaurants in town. Do not expect much on service - part of the authentic Chinese restaurant experience
B. D.
Best Sichuan food. A fireworks display of taste, colour and fragrances
J. M.
Amazing food. Different to anything I've ever eaten. Can't wait to go back
J. Y. C.
Great spicy szechuan food, efficient service, fairly big portions. Go in the mornings to avoid long queues.
J. B.
Fantastic authentic szechuan food. Private rooms available. Well worth a visit
R. G.
Seriously good Sichuan cuisine! Best I've had in London.
R. M.
If you are into Sichuan peppercorn and mouth numbing flavours, this is a brilliant place to checkout.
N. B.
Genuinely different to the usual Chinese restaurant experience in the UK. Staff are great too,
O. D.
Great atmosphere, food was alright. On the expensive side in my opinion.
P. C.

M. W.
Delicious Szechuan food. The dishes we ordered were heavy on the Szechuan pepper
Q. H.
Great Szechuan food. A bit overpriced, though, compared with other fantastic Szechuan restaurants in London.
G. S.
Excellent sichuan dining. Loved the pork ribs soup and rice!
J. M.
Very tasty, especially the deep fried chicken with Szechuan peppers!
P.
Outstanding and authentic restaurant with top quality ingredients. Better than in Beijing
J. Q.
Bit too numbing of Sichuan peppercorn for my liking. Also, totally mad extravagant menu.
L. S.
Delicious food, rustic decor, not the Christ
Cheapest but good food
B. S.

(Translated) Go to dinner with friends to develop the taste of the food. The abalone rice and chicken dishes are delicious ♡♡♡
Abalone rice is a very special dish in Chinatown. I asked the boss to find out that the abalone was picked up directly from the market and it was very fresh. The soup was made by boiling Jinhua ham, chicken bones, pork bones, duck bones and scallops for 12 hours.
Chicken dishes can also be eaten more than one chicken. I love saliva chicken and chicken soup. The cucumber appetizers are also delicious, and the cucumber is delicious!!
I sincerely recommend couples for senior dating or important business negotiations, and entertain relatives and friends☆
The food is good or the service is good, and the restaurant has a good atmosphere \(^o^)/.

(Translated) Personal feeling is the best Sichuan food in London! The level of the domestic Sichuan restaurant can be found in the UK (don't tell me the koi, the only one of his family's fragrant grilled fish series, you buy it home to do better than him, and the service attitude is disgusting), In addition to the small amount, the price is slightly higher than others, no shortcomings! Garlic white meat, oysters, eggplant, dried pot, pork belly, bloody soup, many famous Sichuan dishes are very delicious! My parents ate and said that the taste and the domestic Sichuan restaurant have a fight. In short, I really like it! Eat Sichuan food must go!
