Reviews of Bistro Aix
S. S.
The restaurant used to be a culinary Colossus of the area. Back in the day it served beef Rossini and ossobuco. These are sadly no longer on the menu. Instead I had the fish soup (a bit underwhelming and could be warmer) and a fish (good). Would still return .... The decor needs a bit of an update after all these years...
J. C. H.
Excellent French food and wine in an atmospheric restaurant. The service is precise, efficient and friendly. Fantastic value. The tart tatin is a real treat. One of my favourite London restaurants, without a doubt.
j. r.
Great service and even greater food. Definitely worth a visit and would highly recommend for a nice family meal or night out with your partner.
G. L.
An excellent evening at Bistro Aix with family/chum. The food is perfectly executed - my onion soup was the best I’ve ever had. Service and room warm and friendly. A good wine list too.
Overall an outstanding neighbourhood restaurant and I’m glad it’s still there; we hadn’t visited for some years but won’t leave it so long this time around.
C. G.
Fab food. We’ve been a few times as we are local and the food is superb! Everyone is super nice as well. Probably the best restaurant in Crouch End!
K. A.
Used to be our favourite place in CE with an impressive menu, delicious food and a comfortably smart atmosphere.
Since restrictions have eased it hasn’t been the same. We’ve been back twice and both times our steak has been overdone (despite asking for it to ‘still be walking off the plate!’) and the portions have been less generous or tasty- snails are now served in a shallow dish without bread rather than the previous used dishes with deep holes, so allowing for the garlic butter to pool. We’ve sat in the back room with the wonderful aroma from the loos and the service has been decidedly French, with huffs and puffs, lacking the previous quick wit and charm.
We really hope it returns to its former glory, which includes the Roquefort creme brûlée as otherwise it is not worth the visit.
J. H.
Pretty good and not bad food. Starter was excellent salary well presented. Turkey main was fairly average. Somehow came out thinking it was quiet expensive for what we had, only one drinking wine and £90. Overall good and not a bad meal but may be a little expensive for the food served.
F. W.
Excellent for a lockdown special occasion! Lovely food and easy to plate up.
S. S.
Best French restaurant in the area. Duck à l'orange highly recommended. The large salads are good as well. And the tarte tatin dessert is flambeed at the table with calvados. Prices are good for the quality of food. Many of the wines come in carafes. Romantic, classy atmosphere with the perfect amount of Parisian edge.
J. M.
Excellent French classics, such as foie gras or tarte Tatin, but with an innovative twist. Warm staff and delicious food
K. P.
We are regulars here and always enjoy the great food, service, wines and relaxed atmosphere. Never pass up the opportunity to try their Baked Alaska !!
I. S.
Absolutely lovely food. Lovely evening, spot on service. Fine Dinning in crouch end. Go for it.
J. T.
Just beautiful. I’m so happy there is a french restaurant as good as this in crouch end. All the others in the area don’t come close. Amazing food, great wine, nice and cosy. I’ve been 3 times, can’t wait to visit again.
E. N.
We ordered a take away as a special celebration, we collected, they don’t deliver. The food was just as good as it is in the restaurant in normal times only perhaps more generous portions. It was also all in eco friendly recyclable containers so none of the guilt from ordering out. Can’t wait for them to be open again but this was perfect in the circumstances.
B. E. C.
Always enjoy our meal here , delicious and super pup friendly! Merci!
K. G.
An excellent French experience in the heart of Crouch End.
E. K.
Very quaint French bistro. All three dishes I had were full of flavour and cooked to perfection. I would recommend the baked Alaska for a show stopping dessert and the foie gras on brioche for the ultimate indulging starter!
J. M.
Wonderful location, atmosphere, food, wine and service. Well worth a second and third visit. 13/02 Sunday Roast today was excellent.
N. R.
We called in by chance and asked if they could accommodate plant based vegan options as there was nothing showing as a main course on the menu. As a French restaurant, this is not unexpected. What was unexpected was the resulting meal that arrived when we left it to chef to make up a suitable dish. I have found this usually to be the sign of an excellent chef. We will be back.
K. S.
Ambience is wonderful. Food is nice BUT why are we so anti-children in restaurants like these? No kids portions meant we paid for a meal that would/could only be half eaten, if even that. So wasteful and does not make sense.
G. T.
Fantastic food, wonderful ambience. The staff are warm and polite and the wines are very carefully chosen from organic producers. Best French restaurant I’ve been to in ages.
M. N.
Great food, great atmosphere, great service. French style restaurant with brilliant French food, I would recommend their meat options over their vegetarian as these tend to be nicer, though. Wine selection vast and good, but you needn't go further than their house wines. Baked Alaska dessert is a great spectacle, it's brought out on fire!
F. B.
Enjoyed a really lovely Sunday lunch at Bistro Aix a few weeks ago. The lamb, beef and dessert were all beautifully cooked and presented, pleasant decor and the service was very attentive. Enjoyed the espresso martinis too. Only a shame that it wasn't full, as it's a gem. Will definitely be back now I know they do lunch as well as dinner.
C. H.
The menu was so good here that I struggled to narrow down my choices! I'm half French and I was so impressed with the quality and range of the French dishes. I can't wait to come back and sample some more. The staff were lovely, too.
A. R.
Love Bistro Aix, been a few times now and it’s always perfect for late night romantic candlelit dinners. Food is superb, love the meaty dishes, always cooked beautifully. Wine selection is great and the desserts are very nice indeed. Casual Gallic service but it adds to the charm of the place, it’s all about the great food and atmosphere.
J. R.
Booked a table for 2 for the Christmas menu, £70PP without drinks.
When we arrived were taken straight through, the waiter pointed us to a table but did not properly seat us or ask to take my partners coat, I made a point of asking for the cloakroom and was told where it was although there was no further offer of assistance. Once we'd sat down, the table next to us arrive who were seated promptly with an offer to take jackets and immediately offered water. Took us another few minutes until another member of staff came and we ordered water for the table and a fantastic bottle of Merlot on the advice of the staff member. Was a fantastic recommendation.
For food, I ordered the duck salad followed by the traditional beef Christmas dinner.
Duck salad arrived, very well presented on the plate and tasted phenomenal, as I was eating it quite a large, sharp bone stuck the roof of my mouth. Asked the waiter who didn't seat us if this was normal for a duck salad to which he assured me it was. It's not uncommon apparently for duck which has been shredded specifically to get rid of bones, to contain them.
Main course arrived, everything cooked perfectly and tasted beautiful, a good serving of beef which was unexpected. What a fantastic dish, absolutely amazing.
For dessert I ordered a small pastry which came with ice cream. The pastry was suspiciously heavy and the ice cream reminded me of iceland bought ice cream. Sickly sweet and with an overwhelming taste of vanilla extract, no sign of real vanilla anywhere. Did not finish this dish, restaurant owner assures me this is made in house.
Overall cost was 200+ including the one bottle of wine, will not be going back as the service really didn't match the food which is highly unfortunate. Being lied to by a waiter and no offer to replace the very suspect uneaten dessert upset me to the point of not hanging around. Will not forget that main course however, amazing.
E. B.
Organised my wedding dinner there last April. Staff was amazing ! they did everything to make us feel comfortable ! the food was delicious, guests loved it. We had a menu where everyone could pick what they wanted which is convenient as some people were vegetarians. They were very accommodating ! The quality of the food is exquisite and I would go there again for any type of occasion !!!! :) Thank you Bistro Aix, on this very day you were the best !
W. C.
Absolutely exquisite food and wonderful ambience. It's like you've been transported to a beautiful restaurant in France. Go if you live in Crouch End. Even if you don't, it's worth the trip.
N. T.
We had the pleasure of having Christmas lunch at bistro Aix this year. Service was impeccable and the food was great. We were 16 and nothing was too much trouble to the three waiting staff that served us on the day. All our guests enjoyed both the environment and food. We have been to bistro Aix several times and the quality of both food and service is consistent. Thank you for a lovely Christmas lunch.
S. B.
Lovely place with very friendly and helpful staff. Food was good if not quite excellent. The foie gras starter was very good, the pork belly was good, and my partner's lamb tender and tasty. Good wine choice.
K. C.
I enjoyed a special birthday dinner at Bistro Aix with my friends and family. We used the beautiful private dining room at the back of the restaurant. The venue was perfect, the food was delicious and the attention to detail couldn't have been better. Thank you to all the staff for making my birthday celebration so special.
W. D.
Classical and understated French cooking in a traditional setting. Original neo-renaissance style murals complete the cosy, romantic and dimly-lit ambience. Excellent and reasonably-priced wine list. Elodie is a charming host!
C. B. G.
Lovely ambiance, guided to my table, placed my order after having looked at the menu. My beautiful tasting steak arrived a bit too soon as I hadn't finished enjoying the hot bread and oil. Dessert was gorgeous - Christmas in my mouth!! Prunes soaked in armagnac with vanilla ice cream.
A bit pricey but I had a lovely meal, on my own.
I'd recommend it to couples, groups and lone travellers. Well done😁
K. M.
Great vibes and very personal service. The meals were fresh and enchanting. Will easily recommend this spot to my friends. Convenient prices and large portions. Good job.
J. B.
Fantastic atmosphere, quality well-cooked food with great service to match. Great for a special occasion or a treat. The Baked Alaska is amazing! A wonderful wine list, as you'd expect from a French bistro.
M. G.
Second time to be here. Met our expectations. Food very tasty and the ambience is calming yet sophisticated. The food and drinks selection is good. Meat is cooked properly. Staff are professional. Will definitely come back.
V. K.
Excellent service, delicious food, one of the most complete wine lists you'll find in London. My wife and I love Bistro Aix, and now they always try to accommodate our 6 month old son.
N. B.
We live in Crouch End and have been here a number of times over the years and it never fails! Our most recent visit was for a Christmas Eve dinner. We picked Bistro Aix for its opulent atmosphere and no nonsense French bistro fare, a choice that was rewarded in spades.
We started with Poisson Soup and duck croquettes. The soup was rich with prawns and a satisfying spiced warmth. Served with crispy toasts, aioli and Comte cheese, it did not disappoint! The duck croquettes were a much lighter option and very tasty. The only slight complaint being there was too much of the red cabbage for the volume of croquettes.
Main course was a Guinea fowl breast for me, beef cheek daube for Melissa and a side of green beans. The guinea fowl was delicious, lovely and moist with a great, rich, deep sauce. The beef was tender and melt in the mouth as you would expect!!
All round top notch dinner and exactly what you want from a French bistro!!
Team Bistro Aix, thanks for a great dinner!
Z. F.
Great service and good food. My dishes were a little bit too salty for my taste but was forgiven because of the blueberries tart was so good! Staff very attentive and friendly. Restaurant Highly recommend.
H. O.
Still in a food coma. Every dish is amazing. This place is a must try. Came with a group of four and all of us were blown away and had to be rolled out of there. The staff is super friendly and helpful.
N. S.
Recently went to Bistro Aix with friends to celebrate a birthday. Surprised to see a full house on a Monday night which is always a good sign.
Service was professional and friendly and our food arrived without much of a wait even though it was very busy. Served with a smile too.
I had the Lamb for the main which was very tasty and for dessert the Chocolate Fondant with ice cream and cherries soaked in brandy was to die for.
The decoration has a very personal feel with original art work painted on the walls of both the front and back rooms. Very welcome now that there are so many modern functional restaurant chains around these days.
Will be going back soon.!
M. S. W.
A brilliant French restaurant. It is well-worth traveling to Crouch End to have a meal here. The service is excellent and all the food and wines are amazing. The atmosphere of the restaurant is also charming with nice paintings and relaxing music
D. W.
Really nice meal celebrate a birthday. What helps mark this bistro out as a cut above others is the attention to small details. Tasty white bread and olive oil whilst waiting starters - and the olive oil (Spanish) was young and fresh - delicious. The waiter offered more bread as soon as he noticed we'd devoured the first helping. Very acceptable house red.
And then the food - as everyone describes - really first rate.
A wonderful start to the evening
b. k.
Relaxed but attentive and polite service. Excellently cooked food. Very good value. By far the most professional restaurant in the area. Perfect to invite guests or for a peaceful or romantic evening and just enjoy eating. Would not stand out in France but the sort of place all the locals would eat at. So should you.
M. D.
Great menu, beautifully balanced dishes, executed perfectly. Every bit of food we had was exceptional. Very good service. Will be coming back.
M. D.
So' where do I start!? From the attentive staff to the décor, from the excellent choices of alcoholic beverages to the three course meal my party of three & I had. Everything was sublime. Great evening out & I've been hailed as a champion, because I chose to select this restaurant as our double date night location. Thank you very much to the chefs & staff at Aix bistro. We will definitely be recommending you to our friends & will be back for several more date nights. Five stars'
R. S.
Lovely service. Good wine list. The kind of restaurant you wish you had in your neighborhood and you'd go there all the time if you could!
H. S.
I love it here. The food is good and I don't think I could find a better service around. The restaurant has great potential and for now, on a local level, has excellent reputation. It serves french food which is actually unfamiliar to most of the people here so I can encourage everyone to try it. You won't be sorry.
M. C.
The cuisine, ambiance, music, service and even the wonderful oil paintings, make this easily the best restaurant for miles around.
I have been going for many years, and whatever the occasion, a needed oasis of recuperative peace, a birthday celebration, or an evening’s talk with a friend, there is nowhere better.
J. P.
Really great food with seasonal menu
N. L.
Amazing food and service. The wines have been exquisite too. I highly recommend the experience!

This French restaurant present a great diverse menu with very exciting dishes. The staff and service was oustanding but some mediocre bits and bobs leaves the rating at four.
R. L.
Favourite French restaurant in London. A little on the pricey side compared to other restaurants in the area but I think it's well worth it. Excellent food, great staff, perfect ambience.
K. L.
One of the reasons why Crouch End is a good place to live. Bistro Aix quietly continues its constant offer of a great French menu night out. Highly recommended from a local customer
R. A.
Bistro Aix is the best quality restaurant in Crouch End. I am a regular and I have always had an excellent meal. Service is friendly, helpful and prompt too.
D. M.
It is not cheap, but the service is great and the food is extremely tasty. We had to escape quickly to head to the cinema and they also suggested the right mains for our timing. My steak was juicy and good.
E. J.
I certainly enjoy their food and service, fantastic area right next to my apartment. The cashiers are always very welcoming. Would recommend to others.
M. K.
Food and atmosphere were excellent.
M. M.
Good food, if a little heavy. Lovely smooth red wine with dinner. Has vegetarian menu options which is unusual for a French restaurant. Will go again.
R. C.
Fabulous French inspired food, cosy atmosphere, delicious desserts. Hard to beat the French onion soup, venison and tarte tatin.
D. C.
Great Sunday Brunch menu - from eggs on toast to traditional (English) roast dinner. Good house wine.

Excellent service, the structure per se is really nice, the food was definitely not as good as advertised, but it was Valentine's and perhaps not to their normal standard?

Bistro Aix is situated on Hornsey Lane in Crouch End and provides authentic French food in a lovely rustic atmoshphere. The fried zucchini as a side dish are a must try and for the basics you cannot beat an entrecote au poivre. Reasonably price with friendly staff i would recommend this to both locals.
Also open on Sunday evenings.

A. R.
Lovely, relaxed and good food reasonably priced - we’ll be back!
C. B.
Probably the most satisfying meal I've ever eaten anywhere, and I enjoy eating out. The quality was top-notch, as was the service!
I'm probably classed as a slightly picky eater now, only a few things I can't stand, and willing to try things I swore I would never eat previously (hence the snail and the rabbit). A very nice main, nothing to compare it to, but it didn't feel or taste overdone and the potatoes, mushrooms and mustard sauce were a very nice accompaniment. Especially the potatoes. The duck was a bit tough on the outside, but the inside looked good (I only tried a bit of the outside as it wasn't mine) and the chips were nice.
I didn't get the waiter's name so I'll ask, if he's there, when I go back.
The menu made everything sound good, which is rare. I don't eat meat when out unless the welfare standards and quality are assured, which they are here, so I have free reign! I want to try everything at least once, but the baked Alaska made me gush to everyone I speak to about it and want to drag them right there specifically for it, although I also want all of the other food... Choices, choices.
R. W.
Lovely food and great atmosphere
