Reviews of Green Cottage
B. P.
15 of us went early on Sunday and we were able to have two tables upstairs. The food was great and authentic Cantonese cooking. It wasn’t too salty and I don’t feel very thirsty either after the meal like many other Chinese restaurants. Highly recommended!!
E. L.
Having been here many times this is one of my favourite Chinese restaurants in London. Perfect for authentic Cantonese dishes - they even have steamed minced pork with salted fish (鹹魚蒸肉餅) a very household dish in Hong Kong that I have never seen in any Chinese restaurants in the UK. The dishes are made with authentic ingredients such as straw mushrooms (草菇) and water chestnuts. The roast duck is juicy and flavoursome.

This was the second time we have been here and it was as good as the first time; I must say is the best chinese restaurant I have been.
Great food and fantastic customer service. I came with 3 other friends and we all agreed, everything was just delicious.
V. N.
Great selection of Chinese food in London! Prompt and friendly service by the owners. A staple restaurant in the area.
Two floors to serve the never ending fleet of customers. Gets busy during peak dining hours. Been here for years on special occasions and quality of food is always consistent!
W. N.
After many happy years of eating at our favourite Chinese restaurant in Queensway we were forced to look for a replacement after it shut down years ago. We looked and tried many different places but none could replace the quality and service of our old favourite until we accidentally stumbled across this delightful place on Finchley Road.
I don't usually tend to give 5★ reviews at all as there is almost certainly always room for improvement, but not only did we find the food most agreeable to our fairly picky palate the service we receive during our first visit was the best ever and rest assured I've been to may Chinese restaurant over the years. Seriously the staff at Green Cottage deserve a lot of praise and it is due to their constant attention to detail and pleasant service during our visit (even re-seating us when a better & more appropriate table became available!) that I decided to award Green Cottage my first ever 5★ review. Well done, you deserve it judging from by our first experience. Please keep doing what you did and you will see us coming back for many years to come.
OK now a word about the food. It was all very tasty and very much to our liking. If anything it all had a slightly healthier feel to it compared to other Chinese restaurants, everything seemed lighter and none of the dishes were greasy in any way whatsoever. Perhaps the plum sauce served with the crispy duck & pancakes could have been slightly richer, but then again the way it came was fine and in line with the rest of the restaurants offerings. There was three of us who visited for a birthday celebration (we didn't mention this by the way in case you are wondering) and we all agreed that the food was super tasty and the service second to none.
To top it all the price was very reasonable for what we received and I can recommend this Chinese restaurant highly to anyone looking for one in the North West London area or beyond. For us this Chinese restaurants now sets the benchmark by which we will judge all others.

Wow, what a treat for a Sunday brunch...
Stir fried chicken with carrots and Chinese mushroom wrapped in lettuce, spinach with ginger sauce, sweet and sour prawn and roast duck with crispy noodle.
Had a feast for lunch. The Kai Lan was cooked to perfection, crunchy and tasty with ginger. Steamed sea bass fillet was moist and tender, Singapore noodle was delicious and of course the very scrumptious roast duck . Still as good as it has always been.
Service is excellent.
Y. V.
The best Chinese food I have eaten in London, excellent service
T. G.
Best Chinese food I've ever tasted. This is the place my family and I are now going after being disappointed from previous places. I would recommend the Lemon Chicken, Steamed Rice, Noodles with Beansprouts and Shredded Beef with Chilli :)
A. R.
Best salt and Chili squid and Won Ton soup I’ve ever had and trust me I’ve tried then all (including in HK and various Chinatown’s around the world). I’ve been frequently GC since a truanting teenager and even after relocating to America, whenever I am back in London I head to GC for my much yearned for dishes. The batter on the squid is light, crispy and cooked perfectly. A white gold lacquer you don’t tend to see on a classic dish of this kind. The chopped chili and onion topping has an addictive umami profile - salty, sweet and spicy. A seasoned dream pairing. The juicy pork and prawn won tons contain the right balance of both pork and prawn and without the sour after taste some have. The soup is clear and deep. Again, perfectly seasoned and comforting. I’m already mourning the closure of this beloved restaurant, which I think is the 1st Dec. So this is an obituary of sorts.
A. A.
Had an excellent meal today - portion sizes were good and the food was lovely.
m. L.
Fried rice taste brilliant, roast duck is average. Friendly service and comfortable seating
A. F.
Always good Chinese food. Great to see the original owners are still there.
G. R.
I've been going there for many decades and always like the atmosphere and the unchanging menu.
s. m.
This is the best Chinese restaurant for me. The lobster noodle is the best in U.K. LOVE this
A. S.
I’ve known this place for more than 2 decades, recently came back because I was nearby. I was worried it may have changed and Sometimes, it’s easier to change but they’ve kept it to almost exactly to what it was 💪🏽❤️
K. C.
It has been there for a very very time...i first tried it in 1973 their famous roast pork .roast duck and cha Sui with rice....
S. B.
Excellent food supplemented by the effortless service. Highly recommended.
M. G. (.
Simply my favourite Chinese Restaurant - been going there since 1985!
Authentic Cantonese dishes, beautifully cooked , great value for money and served by waiters and waitresses who really care that their diners are enjoying their food.
S. B.
My husband and his family have been going here for 30 odd years and it is such an excellent Chinese. The food is delicious and great value and good service. The duck, the ho fun, aubergine, asparagus, squid are all delicious to name a few dishes. I have recommended them highly to several friends and family
C. O.
Excellent Duck rice with hot and sour soup! The taste is just spot on!
B. M.
Good food Good price I found it too quite
S. M.
Lovely crispy roast duck! Expensive, but you won't regret it....
S. E.
I visited there on my last night in London. Ordered sweet and sour chicken, chow mein noodles and duck pancakes. They were all very delicious. Our server was very nice and kept cracking jokes all night long. He was like a comedian :) It's a small restaurant but everything is decent here.
m. K.
The best Chinese food I have eaten in London!
J.
There’s a reason why people have been coming to Green Cottage for decades - it’s been consistently fantastic since the 1980s at least (I’ve been visiting since then). It may not look like much, but the traditional Cantonese dishes are all delicious and freshly prepared, and the roast duck and pork is one of the best in London. A local gem.
C. F.
This is the best Chinese restaurant I've been to in a long time. This restaurant has been here for decades, and is still thriving. My uncle from Hong Kong used to eat here when he was a student in London during the 1970s.
A. C.
Good food. Very friendly staff.
J. R. B. L. E.
Went for almost decades growing up in the Swiss Cottage/ Primrose Hill area. The sweet and sour pork was always amazing and I can’t wait to go back once I can get back into the UK after Covid.
J. N.
Really tasty and great value Chinese..worth a trip..
H. S.
This Chinese has been owned and run by the same family for 40+ yrs and I have eaten there intermittently certainly since the early 80s. Totally reliable, dependable pleasant food efficiently served. Nothing fantastic just pleasant and good value.
G.
I have been eating here for 30 year's or more, the best tasting Chinease food in London. Their roast duck on rice plus house "owned" sauce is the best. Can't wait to return !
R. P.
This is, for me, simply the best Chinese restaurant in London. I could elaborate, but the best thing to do is go and try it. I have been going there for the best part of twenty years and this small, family run restaurant has consistently been fantastic. It is my favourite place to eat. Many neighbouring restaurants have come and gone, but The Green Cottage is still buzzing on a busy Saturday night; no music necessary as the diners and staff create enough atmosphere by themselves. I haven't even mentioned the food - we all mostly know what food from a Chinese restaurant is - imagine that, but done to perfection and there you have it. Treat yourself. Go there.
A. M.
Amazing chinese restaurant! Very good value for money and very tasty food! Crispy duck is actually very crispy. They serve food ridiculously fast. We go here with my girlfriend, and from the time you order it takes about 10 minutes tops to get the food. Very, very happy with the place and recommend it 100%!
S. T.
They have spacious floor upstairs, seating arrangements is comfortable. Food was nice, but nothing really special. When we asked for the bill, it took a while for them to come. Then we had to wait for 15 mins to pay - because they only have one machine to share across the whole restaurant. Seriously? Surely it isn't that expensive to get another machine.
C. G.
having my family based in Kuala Lumpur for nearly the last 20 years, I have developed quite a love affair with crispy duck pancakes. I can safely say that the ‘crispy fragrant duck’ pancakes - as they are known on the menu here - are the best I have had outside of Asia. Maybe they’re just as good. The service was impeccable. The waiter broke down the duck table side as it arrived. They really know their stuff. I can not fault them on anything. I’m so happy this place is a 25 minute walk from my house. I’m very excited to return to eat more duck in different ways. 👏🏻
B. S.
Tasty food and the service was very friendly and not rushed.
C. B.
Been going here for years now, food used to be very good but over last few years its gradually declined. Went last week with the family and came out dying of thirst! I always order the same kind of dishes but this time the crispy pork was a salt-fest. I hope they improve on the quality.
Service is still very high, unlike most Chinese places which try to rush you out after you eat Green Cottage does not. Owner is also a very kind man and will always greet you at the door.
Quick tip always ask for the "Chinese" menu it is a smaller menu with a more authentic style dish selection. I tend to not look at the larger green menu. Both menus will be in English so dont worry :)
H. L.
I've been going to the Green Cottage since I was a child. It's an amazingly good, and very authentic Chinese restaurant, and the owners and staff (who've been there as long as I've been going - over 20 years!) take fantastic care of everyone who goes. The food is truly tasty, and the evidence is the number of a) returning customers, and b) Chinese customers - which I can only surmise is a good thing!
N. D.
Good tasty food including the duck & rice. Staff are sombre & one occasion were shouting at the diners & telling them to eat what had been served to them & then the diners took turns to shout at each other! Entertaining & hilarious? After which a service added on the bill was not paid which led to more arguments with the Chinese staff!
Parking is a problem.
T. H.
I have been coming to Green Cottage, formally the Asiatique, for decades. It has changed over the years and is now a cafe style establishment with traditional chinese food. The present management have run it for many years. The food had always been excellent and reasonably priced, you really can not do much better. Highly recommended. It can be busy early in the evening.
V. C.
Our family have been coming to this restaurant for years now, its one of our favourites.
Must haves:
Roast duck off the bone
Lobster Noodles with spring onion and ginger
Stuffed bean-curd with black bean sauce
The owners are a sweet elderly couple, and the lady always comes over to greet us and tells us how she is the artist of the paintings on the walls, even though she's said this to us countless times now.
K. P.
Had takeaway - for the first time in over 18 months - and it was as good as we remembered! So happy Green Cottage is back!!
S. P.
We are regulars at this fabulous neighborhood restaurant! Always get a friendly welcome. Must try seasonal vegetables in garlic sauce, chicken with ginger and black bean sauce and fried noodles. Straightforward Chinese dishes very well executed. Always buzzy with a loyal local clientele. Friendly service with a warm welcome.
A. G.
Had lunch to celebrate Chinese new year. The food was very tasty, well prepared, well presented and decent size portions. It is good value for money. Our meal of half a crispy fragrant duck, 2 entrees, fried rice, noodles, tea and soft drinks came to under £40 including svc.
H. N.
One of the most authentic Chinese restaurants in London! The roast duck is to die for with its succulent meat & crispy skin.. It comes smothered in the secret sauce that's the perfect accompaniment, especially with rice. Roast crispy pork is also outstanding especially fresh at lunchtime (ask for it not to be heated up so that the crackling remains crunchy). And don't forget the house made Chilli oil which adds delicious spice to everything. Green Cottage has been a legend in North London for decades. Long may it live!!
M. S.
Live 40 miles away now so only get back once or twice a year now. Food still as good or even better than it was over 30 years ago and well worth the half our wait we had at 8pm on a Sat night. No matter when we visit there are always people queuing and nobody every complains. Recommend the baked prawns in salt and chilli, the crispy duck and pancakes, roasted duck off the bone and the singapore noodles. Well worth a visit!
F. G.
Always a friendly welcome, service is good, and the food is great tasting, sensible priced, and having been a dozen times I can confidently post this review.
A. B.
Poor rating this time, i have used the Green Cottage for 34 years and went back after the fire there. Service was terrible last night, i was assured home delivery and then refused after i made the order. The bill was £86:00 and they forgot to pack 2 of my items, i needed to go back after reaching home. The food was as good as ever however the service has declined over the past few years and i do attend less than i used to.
W. L.
I love the roast duck and honey pork they serve at Green Cottage. I do think it's comparable to Goldmine and Four Seasons in Bayswater They do a very good job with their chinese cuisine and I have never been disappointed. Excellent chinese food!
L. K.
Been coming here for many years, Always delicious food and great service. Excellent value for money and very authentic food. Bring all my friends and relatives here when they are in the area.
A. F.
Delicious food, special the duck.
Some things little expensive, but you can find easily good food for reasonable price.
Waiter could be more friendly or at least could smile sometimes.
K.
As a Cantonese who have tried almost every Chinese restaurant in London, I have to say .. Green Cottage makes the most authentic Cantonese food.
I'm not exaggerating the first time I had dinner at Green Cottage, the flavour brought me back to my childhood. I almost cried!! Even In Guangdong or Hong Kong it's hard to find such an authentic place nowadays.
J. H.
Cottaging never tasted so good!
B. S.
Absolutely love this place. Impeccable service and traditional chinese food done so welll. Cannot recommend enough. A proper neighbourhood restaurant.
D. C.
Excellent food with equally excellent service. Have been going to this family run resturant for over 25 years. A favourite place for all my family.
A. S.
Been going there for the best Chinese food for last 25 years. The food is same as when I had the first time. It is Chinese cusine. The owners are always there and very friendly.
J. G.
Amazing food! Fresh ingredients and delicious sauces. We like the crispy fragrant duck (with pancake), especially. What a find! Recommended.
N. A.
Visited again recently, very clean and safe for covid which is great.
As always lovely staff and food.
Lovely, lots of choices, not expensive, quick service, well lit and lots of tea!
O. M. (.
Good food... However forced 12% service charge on takeaway food is a bit too much on the cheecky side!! Want more money... I crease the prices... Dont back handedly charge customers a service charge on takeaway food.
B. D.
Great service and authentic. Roast duck is perfect as are the seafood dishes. A meal for 4 was £90 well spent!
E. H.
Every time I’m in Swiss Cottage I came at Green Cottage. This is the best local Chinese restaurant for sure. I love their seafood specialties especially shoes with shrimps … mmm delicious.
M. R.
Visited twice over the weekend had a lovely meal both times. On my way there tonight or tomorrow night

G. D.
I'm stuck to the 🦆 duck. Great food and wines tiny list. The only negative in my opinion is the basement kitchen room .highly recommended
J. M.
It is a good neighbourhood restaurant. Chinese food without too many complications. Just straight forward dishes, good in size, well presented and good in general.
J. C.
I have been eating here for over 30 years . Best Chinese Food in London ! And that is a great achievement indeed .
N. S.
The food is amazing, but the staff should be more knowledgeable about food allergens in their food.
w.
Big portions, mid price, not too smart, just relaxed. Steamed belly pork with preserved cabbage is to die for!
E. F.
Probably good in the early eighties when there was little choice of restaurants. Now it just doesn’t stack up. We even had to leave a dish barely untouched it was just boring.
R. B.
Very Good Chinese Food Best Duck
L. H. L.
Had the roast duck and lean pork rice, and wanton. Skin of wanton was too tough, nowhere close to cooked. Roast duck and lean pork rice lacked flavour, too tasteless.
L. C.
Great little Cantonese eatery with a wide selection of dishes. The duck is above average. Portions are generous.
R. F.
Very good neighbourhood Chinese restaurant. Don't be afraid- you won't turn green after eating here
