Reviews of Le Chamarel
F. E.
Really great tasting Mauritian food. Crab soup, absolutely delicious. All my friends love it when I bring them here. UPDATE: Post COVID-19, the restaurant is now running as a takeaway only service.
s.
I can only imagine that the one star reviews are from owners of other restaurants. It's even more likely that these Mauritians have been offended by the owner's unsmiling demeanor. Or even MORE likely, if you're Mauritian yourself, you'll know that plenty of Mauritians cannot but help bring their own people down when they're quite clearly successful and very good at what they do. Jealousy is not a useful trait.
Visit this little restaurant with confidence. Over the last 3 years I've eaten various dishes from the menu: different versions of biryani, min frire, du riz frire, the different legumes, and - my favourite - bouillon crab, which was absolutely incredible. Come to think of it, I've had several curries at Chamarel too. I am also guilty of having eaten every single one of the desserts they have on offer, buying the puddin manioc far too many times.
Even the salads and pickles are perfect. I am Mauritian - my grandmother and mum cook Mauritian food every single day - there is no way anyone can say that this food is not authentic Mauritian food! The gateau piment is so good that it's as though you've bought it from a street vendor in Camp Diable!
It only feels expensive because in Mauritius we're used to paying 12 rupees (about 30p?) for a pair of dhall puri so paying £2 here seems expensive. But it obviously isn't.
Visit Le Chamarel and see for yourself! I'll be there (again) very soon.

The chicken briani was on point. Fried noodles well.. it is not the same as home but delicious. Service is friendly. it is great to just go to a place and be able to order these food from home.
S. R.
I was missing Mauritian food so much that my husband found this lovely restaurant in North London! Lovely people and lovely food! I can't recommend the restaurant enough!
N.
Came here for a family meal, tried a lot of traditional Mauritian dishes. For starters we had gateaux piments (mauritian falafel) and gateaux arouille (sweet doughy fried balls) for starters along with dhall pourri (traditional bread)- all were really tasty. I had the Poulet Mine Frire (chicken fried rice), which brought back childhood memories! My family tried the biryani, this was the only let down as we found that it didn't taste authentic. For dessert I had Poudine Mais (Corn Maize pudding) - this was the highlight for me, it was beautifully done. The staff are helpful and very attentive too, thank you for a nice experience all round.
M. J.
Really enjoyed our time there. Sidiq looked after us exceptionally week. Recommend the Briani and the desserts can be taken as a take away as they pack it well and the Briani portion is huge such that it’s impossible to have both.
M. B.
Chamarel is our go to restaurant whenever we feel like eating mauritian food.
The best dishes so far have been the rougaille crevettes and cari ourite!
A must try if you are around.
Ordered briani for eid and it was the best briani we had for a long long time - all our guests loved it!
a. d.
Food was lovely, staff were very pleasant. So glad I bought loads of food - it was all great!
a.
It's my first visit to Le Chamarel. I have heard a lot about its tasty food. I was there with my family. The dholl puri was really nice and tasty. We also ordered bol renversé, fish briani and boulette poissons. These dishes were to our expectations. The service was poorly. Well, the establishment is more like eat in or a take away service rather than a proper restaurant. Therefore, one cannot expect much. I agree with some of the reviewers that some dishes was a bit exorbitant but overall it's affordable. I was looking forward to taste pearona or cidona which I have not had for years since my childhood but they have run out of stock. It is not easy to find a parking due to restrictions in place there. I have heard a few friends who was issued parking tickets there despite late evening. There are only a few pay and display parkings.
A. G.
Very good food and very tasty. Wish portions could be bigger. The bol renverse one of the best u can get in london
e. m.
I ordered chicken fried rice and spinach curry. Both were cooked really good and the spices were brilliant, not overwhelming at all. The place was nice and clean, and the food was wonderful!
M. R.
Very good Mauritian food, little Mauritius in North London.
Z. S.
Food was lush, we had dhal puri, roti, gato pima, napolitan, etc.
Kids love the food too, considering I have a fussy eater. We definitely go eat there again to try other varieties of food. A lot of choices available.
S. M.
Lovely daal puri and sauces, Briyanies, and fried rice.
G. L.
We travelled from the other side of London to try Le Chamarel's Mauritian food (which is non-existent where I live) and I'm so glad we did. Their Covid takeaway service was well handled. My octopus rougaille was delicious and an amazing introduction to Mauritian food, while the Glenryck (pilchard) curry is incredible - I've never had a curry quite like it anywhere else. The homemade tamarind juice was wonderful and fresh, and it's worth trying as many of the interesting snacks and desserts (like taro fritters and cassava pudding) as you can.
Portions and prices were great too. The food here is unpretentious, bold and masterfully flavoured; this is the kind of establishment all Londoners should cherish.
K. S.
The food is hit and miss...the Daal Puri was great but the Biryani and Roti was not very good. Roti was undercooked and was very doughy and Biryani no flavour...more rice and currys than a proper bargain. On the flip side the Daal Puri was fluffy and cooked perfectly. Also, achar legume and pima was fantastic.
I have eaten at this place lots and generally the food is good and would still go back. Maybe they were having a really bad day.
T.
This is the place to go for good Mauritian cuisine. Food is always tasty and delicious, my kids love the typical Mauritian snacks and of course the main.
The restaurant is small, always clean and quite basic in appearance. Don't expect candles or mood setting. I think the only thing missing is music, would be great to hear some Sega whilst enjoying your meal. The staff are friendly and helpful. It can be a little pricey but so worth it, portion sizes are great.
s. n.
Great place to get good, the customer service is really good and the people that worked there. I went about 2 weeks ago recently and had a beef briyani and fish balls and everything was great. The briyani was sensational! This restaurant catered for my wedding 9 years ago and the taste is still amazing!!! Not sure about a few bad reviews, these people don’t go out of their way to make customers unhappy and they are genuinely good hearted to rectify any mistakes.
N. S.
Last night, Le Chamarel might just become our favourite takeaway in the area. We ordered 3 meals and all of them were so good, beautifully spiced and generous portions for super reasonable prices. Can't wait to order from them again!
M. A.
At least this place serves as a reminder of the great Mauritian food that we used to eat, even better than the ones we used to eat back in Mauritius. 5* briani and the Chinese food that we took away. Thank you for the friendly service.
M. O.
Wonderful customer service, they really make you feel welcomed. The food was mostly delicious, very flavoursome. A few things were not to my liking but that is more down to preference than the dishes being bad. Definitely going back. Thank you for a lovely evening.x
K. S.
Great food & great service ! ! Definitely recommended ! Thank you
m.
Lovely place. I go there often and they have nice food from Mauritius.
A. R.
The best dhal puri in London. Biryani is also amazing. Devi deluxe is nothing compared to this place! Great customer service too. Highly recommend.
s. a.
One of the best mauritian restaurants and takeaway I have been to the food always on point compliments to the chef. A real taste of the Mauritian island. Highly recommended
H. D.
Amazing amazing authentic experience. Honestly great atmosphere. You really feel like you are in Mauritius. Great customer services could not complain at all about the food it was amazing. As a fellow Muricia and even I was surprised at how good authentic and how much variety of food they had. This is a must for any mauritians seeking home food. Complements to the chef.
J. G.
Very satisfied with the portion sizes at such an affordable price. Had a friendly service from the staff who were quick with our orders and nice of them to reserve a table as we were travelling quite far. The dholl puri here is amazing just like the way Mauritius does it along with the lamb biryani. Worth the trip!
M. M.
Price has gone up by at least 20% since the last time i visited last year and the portions are smaller too. Very disappointed in that regard as i left the restaurant having spent £32 and still hungry. Decent food, will visit again but not anytime soon. Please increase portions as they are tiny.
M. Z.
Great Mauritian food, helped by decent pricing. Really good local eating /dining/ lunching. I love it, as you can make Orestes spicy, if you ask! Do go and try, I'd react.
F. T.
I love the food here it's always fresh and super tasty! My favourite dish is the noodles. The staff are so friendly and everytime I go there they all remember me which is so nice :) the best food and the best people!
S. “.
Visited with a group of six and must say we loved the food. It really was great. The staff was also very friendly and helpful too.
Thanks for the great service.
S. A.
Best Mauritian Restaurant in London.
V.
One of the best biryanis in London without a doubt. A completely unpretentious restaurant with QUALITY food. It's very hard to find restaurants that do good biryani/curry so this is an excellent find :)
S. A.
After reading all the good reviews i came from far to try their food, and i can say it was worth it ! I had a lamb baryani with their speciel Alouda drink. And the fish samosa was a blast ! I Think everything tastes amazing and authentic here.... here is your mama away from home
D. G.
Decent food quality for a good price, had dholl puri, gato arouille, samosa, fried noodles, and biryani with my friends. We had a good time however was told by friends didn't like the biryani as they said it doesn't feel nice and they couldn't eat the whole thing because of the taste as it doesn't feel authentic(the biryani).
Please try to change something about the biryani.
Otherwise staff and everything else were friendly.
G. Y.
Very good for tasty authentic Mauritian cuisine. A blend of Indian, Creole, Chinese, African, French cuisine.
Mauritian briani is like no other I have sampled in any restaurant outside Mauritius.
Price is reasonable.
I. G.
Delicious, authentic Mauritian food. Fantastic seafood dishes. The staff is very friendly too. Would recommend and will definitely be back.
L. O.
Mauritian food and snacks is why you would go there. Whether you like mauritian food or need to catch up the food and bites that you haven't had for a while then go there. 3 minutes walk from the Turnpike Lane station it's easy access and can prepare mauritian bites on large order.
c.
Came here with a few friends the other day and was not disappointed. The food was homecooked and very tasty. Reasonably priced as well. The only thing I didn't quite dig was the interior, which I found a bit small. Can't wait to go back!!!!!!!
S.
Great flavours with blow your bambaclat head off chilli sauce.... Dun-know!!!
On a serious note, really delicious food. Renowned biriyanis. Exceptional curries. Superb snacks. A wonderful Mauritian restaurant
H. B. M.
Authentic taste of home. I wish they delivered to my area. The flavours will take you back to that much missed sunny island. A lovely nostalgic trip down memory lane through the tastebuds :)
D.
Little restaurant with big flavour!! Visited this weekend in a group of six and everyone was wowed by the food from starters, to dessert. Great service too.
A. M.

Proper. Mauritian. Food. Faratas are heaven, cari gro pois tastes juste like back home and tarte banane are so delicious I could gobble 3 at a time. Whenever I feel homesick, this is the place I go to feel happy again.

Food was great. Definitely the best mauritian food in London! Food came quite quickly but was difficult to get attention from the table. Overall good experience.
S. P.
Really committed outlet for Mauritian cuisine. Look at the menu and imagine more!!! Very moreish aromas and flavours.
V. G.
Good value for money, authentic Mauritian food. Based on my first experience today, just like the food my mother and grandmother made. A real treat.
K. L.
Tasty Mauritian food ...
J. J.
Food is good, there wasn’t a menu when you eat in but a takeaway menu is there, the website had more options than that menu though. But I know Mauritian food so wasn’t a issue for me but others would find it difficult
J. f.
Perfect if you want a taste of traditional mauritian cuisine
s. S.
Amazing food at a good price. Quick service. Lots of my mauritian favourites. Will definitely come here again with family and friends.
L. G.
Small and crowed. Food is very nice only when it's freshly cooked and serve straight away, otherwise can be a bit stale if left out for too long on display cabinet.
A. C. P.
Delicious food, friendly helpful staff, great prices. The homemade drinks are really good!
Z. D.

So happy to have found this authentic mauritian restaurant, the staff bring a smile to my face, its so good to hear my native dialect being spoken and smelling the fresh foods.
Their Daal Puri is to die for, amazing quality and low price, made in front of you, we even came back for seconds and their desserts are scrumptious.
Its definitely my go to restaurant for the rest of my life.
