Reviews of Le Vieux Comptoir

Nice selection of wine but food is unfortunately pretty disappointed.
Overall the place is overpriced for their quality.

Good old style French restaurant in the heart of Marylebone. Good wine, great chacuterie board, great cheeses in the fondue, tasty snails, crème brulé and profiteroles were a big hit!!
A. R.
Great service, lovely selection on wine. Food could be much better though unfortunately. Otherwise, lovely looking place

A wonderful new find. Although it has been in Moxon Street for 8 years we had no idea it was so close. Tucked away right in the corner is a little piece of France that is charming and serving delicious food and wonderful wines. The patron, Laurent is on hand to greet you as you pass through the wine shop on the ground floor and descend to the large welcoming restaurant on the lower ground. The menu is very french and everything is delicious. Portions are generous and staff charming. It is definitely going on our list very near the top.

Love this place! A hidden gem in Marylebone. I’ve been coming over the last 6 years. Very good quality food, low key atmosphere, great service. There is a wine store above the restaurant, and you can have any wine with a small corkage.

Lovely place with a great menu in a casual French setting. The staff is super friendly. Perfect for a cosy date or hang out with your friends.

Had dinner in the basement. It's definitely an interesting place, with what I'll call "straightforward" food (nothing subtle, but decently done), and the service a little erratic.
B. C.
Went for the all you can eat raclete. Oh lawdy, if you have never had cheese euphoria, this place will help you get there. The staff are super friendly, and very helpful. And they have a great selection of wines.

One of my favourite places in the world! Proper French food and wine. So happy they’ve survived the lockdown.

Always excellent; relaxed, low-key and discrete environment. Charming staff and extensive choice of food and beverages; old school.
C. V.
Very nice French restaurant. Food is delicious, the wine list is extended. You would need to spend around £40 to have a proper lunch.

Really good value for authentic French food. The duck is well cooked but a little on the rare side when I ordered medium. Flambee creme brulee is probably the best I've ever had.

I've been here quite a few times, both to eat downstairs and just to buy wine in the shop upstairs.
The people working in the shop are always happy to help you find a great wine for your price point.
Recently I was looking for a bottle of rose champagne for a special occasion. Simon really helped me pick the perfect bottle - and everyone loved it - thank you! :)
S. R.
Cosy and authentic French cafe - also offers off license wine sales.

Outside of Paris it's hard to find traditional French food so this is a joy.The wine shop upstairs is good but needs a little more adventure as it's catering to a very stuffy clientele. The food though, no criticism whatsoever.

We received a wonderfully warm welcome by their delightful and attentive staff. The food is delicious, and the ambience perfect. Dog friendly and dog welcoming - staff accommodated us beautifully in a gorgeous little side area where other diners might not have even known the dogs were there! Great for a full indulgent dinner or a light lunch. Follow your meal with a walk around the small pretty park next door and some shopping in nearby Marylebone High Street. We've dined here before and we will dine here again!

An lovely, cosy and well designed space. The food is heavenly, even their butter is homemade! Our waitress was very helpful in helping us to choose the right wines with our food, and we had truly delicious meal. Great place for food lovers! I will definitely visit again

Charming French restaurant with a homely atmosphere and lovely staff. I've taken a range of friends here and everyone has loved it. The menu is simple but everything is made very well. Wine list is great too. I'll be returning again soon.

Came today for an All You Can Eat Raclette. Service was super friendly and the food was superb. Little piece of France in a tucked away corner of London. Well done team!
S. T.
Never eaten in the basement due to covid restrictions /lockdowns but this is one of the best wine shops in the city! The staff is also super helpful and extremely knowledgeable - highly recommend!

Really lovely French restaurant with great food and wine

I loved this place, the restaurant itself is cozy and somehow hidden from the Baker Street noise. The atmosphere is great and the menu + service were amazing as well. The "all you can eat" raclette, onion sour and tartare...delicious!
S. G.
If you're looking for a French bistro, this is the place. From foie gras to duck confit, raclette to omelette... They even serve real cornichons! So yes, this is as French as it gets. Fantastic wine list, food and service. We had an amazing Mondeuse from Savoie (price surprisingly low). Cheese was 👌👌👌. Staff friendly and funny. Go, go, go!
w.
so many cheeses and one room is a walk in fridge!
N. C.
A place which has surprised me, in a very good way. Being natively French, it was a real pleasure to get to eat those delicacies. Good and wine are marvellous and the atmosphere will drive you to another world the time you're there.

Completely by chance a colleague and I stumbled across this place today for lunch.
It was lovely.
We both shared a mixed charcuterie board and then had the daily special (boeuf bourguignon and a cassoulet) with a glass of red each.
Everything was delicious.
Nice cost atmosphere. Excellent service.
What a find! Very enjoyable French food indeed.
P. B.
Disappointing. Very nice onglet, but served with boiled potatoes and not even a garnish of parsley. Endive salad was browning. Excellent Gigondas. I am a fan of casual French bistros and even though this is run by French people, I found no reason to go back.
E. W.
I felt very welcomed since making my phone call reservation. The reception and service was on top. The meals were amazing. Definitely will go back again and recommend it to anyone who wants a pleasant dinner!

I always have the best experiences when I come to Le Vieux Comptoir, the services is amazing and the food is even better.
I was really missing this place and was super excited to come back after the last few months of absence, it was well worth it.
Thanks again

Cute little gem, nice welcoming and amazing smells inside. Try the creme brulee for scoring. Small part of France hidden in London beneath staircase entrance

I personally sampled a pinot noir and and the french version of an alpine sliced cured meat. Very nice. Bring a nice group of wine lovers here or a date. Recommended for France excursion

Le Vieux Comptoir is a little gem hidden away in a basement under a wine shop in an obscure corner of Marylebone (if that's possible) but well worth searching out. The Salad Lyonnais is to die for. The staff are French, the food is authentic. I think you'd be hard pressed to find anything as good anywhere for twice the price, even in France!
I. C.
Phenomenal French wine shop with an underground restaurant. Delicious, unassuming menu that delivers quality bistro fare.
M. W.
Nice place ! Food is great and staff friendly !
B.
It’s a downstairs restaurant that has friendly if quite oddball service but absolutely stunning food. The fondue is amazing. A great cosy place for winter.
C. D.
Cosy little basement location, ideal for a casual bite to eat and a glass of wine.
The generous charcuterie board was ideal to share.
Service was friendly and pleasant and the place had a genuine warmth.
l. c.
Classic French food reasonably priced with friendly and attentive service. The downstairs dining room is cosy and atmospheric.

From phoning ahead, to see if our dogs would be warmly welcomed, every stage of our dealings with this establishment could not have been more welcoming. Delightful staff and lovely food, we would highly recommend with or without a dog to accompany you!
m. s.
Definitely one of my new fav place in London. Special atmosphere, lovely hosts. Amazing wines and great food. Superb!

Wonderful food, lovely hostess. Only slightly pricey, but you get what you pay for certainly cuts both ways. Well, not always, but here it does. :)
M. N.
Charming French neighbourhood favourite with classics done well and kind and friendly owner and staff. Where I go when I miss Paris.

Super tasty french food. Service is good and the house is cute; great place for a date.
B. F.
Very warm welcome and very friendly staff. And most important: the food was pretty amazing !!
N. D.
Decent food - nothing notable (got the onglet which was good, and the onion soup which was poor/ flavorless).
J. A.
Charming restaurant. Great service and very reasonably priced. You really can't ask for more.
J. B.
Consistently great service and well prepared food. A London favourite.

A bit of France in Marylebone :)

Excellent!

(Translated) It would be good to update the schedules here, to avoid French crossing London and arriving in front of a sign saying that the restaurant is closed, while it is indicated open on Google. thanks anyway
(Original)
Il serait bien de mettre les horaires à jour ici, pour éviter à des français de traverser Londres et d'arriver devant une pancarte disant que le restaurant est fermé, alors que c'est indiqué ouvert sur Google. Merci quand même
E. G.
(Translated) The service was efficient, the very welcoming staff is very kind to the guests. To redo! I recommend for all lovers of good things!
