Reviews of Lyle's
H. R.
One the the 2 restaurants in London to make it to the recent world s top 50 list. Lyle's had been on our list for sometime now. Finding a convenient lunch time reservation, we went to Lyle's in January to see what the fuss was about. Located in Shoreditch in a very nondescript building. The restaurant is not pretentious. A very simple, canteen like feel. The food was brought up one by one, and the chefs could be seen busy in the open kitchen. The restaurant wasn't very full at lunch, but everyone seemed to be very happy with the flavours and the simple presentation of the food. The service was the only reason why I can't give this restaurant a 5 star. It was lacklustre and a bit confused and not very friendly. I don't see why that was, given how empty the restaurant was.
All in all, kudos to the chef and their team. But a friendlier service crew would do wonders. I suppose it's the ranking that has made them a bit snooty. Not a pleasant experience, I certainly won't be back anytime soon.

Had a lovely mid-week dinner, that started with a warm greeting from the host upon walking in (she came by to talk to us towards the end of our meal & she was a hoot!).
The # of dishes was perfect - starting with a memorable oyster and shaved apple ice on top. Sublime.
I love that there's a pescetarian menu alongside the main 1 (the only difference was beef vs monkfish last week).
Meal per person was ~£165, with a shared bottle of wine & a couple cocktails (their pear vermouth cocktail was also phenomenal!).
Lastly, I could probably live on their brown butter cake. Absolutely divine.
Only constructive feedback would be that the table service isn't as attentive as other 1 stars I've been to (where they fill water promptly, know how you use your utensils & arrange it accordingly etc).

Best place I’ve visited in London so far. Not cheap but worth it. The ambiance is chill and relax, nothing pretentious but you get your Aesops and toilet goodies. The staff is cool and friendly, the sommelier planned a very interesting pairing and gave a lot of context for every wine which we enjoyed. The food was very very good. We had the cheese before dessert which we could have skipped but enjoyed every piece. Would definitely recommend for a special occasion.
R. G.
excellent service. highly recommend the sea bass and smoked eel. bitter leave salad is of good balance.
improvement needed on: razor shell lose the natural flavor, too salty. raw scallop is a bit bland. raw beef is a bit greasy due to the extra creamy sauce underneath.
S. S.
Very much a special occasion place due to price bracket. We popped in for a kitchen takeover by a Brazilian Chef. The food is excellent, with each dish explained as served by staff. A very upmarket mature crowd. Drink options seemed limited beyond wines, but I guess that is because wine choices were the best partner for the food there. Staff are professional. Lyles has become a staple of the area but this was the first time I had been here since it opened. Can get more for my buck elswhere normally BUT certainly worth it for that one gastro treat blowout you deserve.
A. N.
Had high expectations here as Lyle’s is ranked 33 in the World’s 50 best restaurants list.
Having dined in a vast variety of restaurants in London, sadly I do not understand what the hype is about.
The ingredients were fresh .. but flavours were not extraordinary.
C. Z.
Everything about my recent dinner at Lyle's was impeccable. From the moisture-heavy breads to the service and ambience, to how they were able to customize the set menu to my dietary restrictions, this was was of the best meals I've had, hands' down.
I love when food has that gastronomical lean, but doesn't lose the essence of its ingredients or flavors. Lyle's feels elevated but never pretentious. Highly recommend and will be definitely coming again when I'm in London next.
R. S.
A wonderful atmosphere, very attentive and friendly staff coupled with modern British food.
There is no separate vegan menu but the kitchen is able to prepare a few tasty plant-based dishes.
L. T.
Very nice tasting menu. At first I was concerned that we were seated at the bar but the attention we received from Nyle and the sommelier was outstanding.
B. B.
We had such a superb experience at Lyle's. The food was brilliant -- especially noteworthy are the porridge bread and the godly coffee/caramel meringue. Beyond the spectacular food, the service and atmosphere was great, with friendly and professional staff. A single sitting was enough to mark Lyle's as one of our absolute favourite dining spots in London.
A. T.
Nice room, nice food, nice service. The girolles were excellent, sour and appetizing. Teal duck with beetroot sweet sauce were a good combination! Everything was quite small, but because they were so good I wanted more. Fantastic experience.
N. I.
Jus wow. Went here on a recommendation from a friend and it was fantastic. With the menu changing on a daily basis you won't know what to expect, but this just adds to experience. Special shout out to all the staff who were unbelievable, super attentive and made my partner feel really welcome when she arrived early.
D. B.
One of my favourite restaurants in London. Everything on the menu is delicious and creative. It may seem a bit on the pricey side but if you’re consider it is a Michelin star restaurant it’s surprisingly affordable. Staff is super friendly and the deco is minimalist and unpretentious. I’ve been there several times and will keep coming back
K. W.
The very simple decor does not reflect the exquisite menu.
We had a most enjoyable evening celebrating a friend's birthday! The staff were knowledgeable and helpful. The menu was exciting and provided a great selection of dishes for all the taste buds! The drinks selection was equally enjoyable.
b.
they have different tasting menus for different dietary requirements, which is a great bonus, i ordered the pescatarian menu. the bread is really great, has the appropriate amount of moist. jerusalem artichoke was delicious, walnut and radicchio accompanied it really well, but the sea bass was absolutely the highlight. and for the desert i’d say buckwheat, chocolate and caramel was the fav, seems so simple yet so flavoursome.
K. Ø.
We had a fabulous evening of the most amazing food and wine. Everyone was incredibly nice to us and the information they provided on the food and wine made the experience run full circle. Would come back in a heartbeat!
E. W.
Pretty wonderful. I've been twice for their lunch service, which is generally of a very high calibre and worth the money. They have a rotating menu, and I wish they still had their incredible blood pudding dish which they had the first time around. The coffee-based dessert is delicious. It also doesn't have too stuffy an atmosphere with rather casually dressed staff (especially the second time I went).
Of course, we Brits don't tend to have the most adventurous palettes, so I feel this place's food might be wasted on the general (white) public who are disproportionately more likely to have the money to afford to go to such places. Perhaps that's why the more interesting dishes are the ones being rotated out each time!
C. C.
Have been to Flor so many times during the lockdown for the pastry and ASAP pizza. So decided to try Lyles for an upgraded version of experience. All dishes are amazing. Especially the flatbread reminds me of the tasty ASAP pizza! The most impressive dish was the chicken. Good flavor and very juicy, not a typical dry roasted piece.
J. H.
Had an amazing meal at Lyle's. Great service and a nice atmosphere. Highly recomend for a special occasion.
C. D.
Recently had a delightful birthday meal at Lyles. Very special place. The food was insanely good, the wine pairings perfectly complimented and fantastic service. Couldn’t be happier or recommend more highly!
L. O.
One of the best restaurants in London by far - every time the texture, flavour and ingredients are top quality and their wine pairing recommendations are always the best, trust them blindly. The service is what you ‘d expect from a michelin starred restaurant yet not pretentious at all, very casual but
also attentive and informative. It’s by far my favourite place in London!
G. Y. T.
amazing dinner at lyle’s! good food good service nice wine selection. love the interaction at the bar. definitely planning to head back soon!
O. L.
Last night I finally had a chance to try out Lyle's. After dining here, I highly recommend this restaurant and its tasting menu. It is definitely one of the best I had tried so far.
Portion is great, you will feel full but not overfull. Cooking style wise, I would describe all dishes are very down to earth. How so? It may not have luxury food presentation, but every bite of food you can expect to be surprised by new combination of flavour or texture. It comes back to the essence of food.
I love all dishes, the only one I less like is the summer pudding with St Jude ice cream. However, it is definitely good to try it out.
M. J.
Nice service and reasonably priced a la carte lunch menu. Only drawbacks: duck on toast with jelly plate was not good, and oysters tasted a tad fishy. Pros: eel dish was very nice, and apple dessert was very good.
J. C.
Came here recently. Staff very knowledgeable. Also, came for my birthday with a table of 10. Every person felt personally attended and the staff were really excellent taking time to explain options to members of our group with allergies or were pregnant.
D. B.
We had amazing meal, each course was fantastic.
The wine flight match the food perfectly.
I suggest to do this experience: unforgettable 🤩🤩🤩🥂🎉
The teem is excellent, great, super!
Thanks all
R. M.
Really excellent. Everything was great, but stand-out dishes included a foraged vegetable and mushroom broth with a slow-cooked egg yoke, pan fried pollock with a kind of smoked roe mousse, and both the desserts - one a rhubarb and cream type thing that was just the most delicious rhubarb dish I’ve ever had, and a collection of petit fours including a salted caramel macaron and a little treacle cake. Staff were really helpful and fun too. Can’t recommend enough.
E. J.
Paired down room where the food does the talking. Friendly staff who are just the right amount of attentive. Great for vegan, veggie, pescatarian or meat eaters. Set menu style. Excellent.
V. L.
Amazing food and great service! We had the vegetarian set menu, a few cocktails and everything was excellent. As others on here say: the bread is next level!
P. C.
Another brilliant meal at Lyles. Blown away the first time with the quality of produce and cookery. Today was a tiny step down.. probably due to what was ordered.. Still my favourite eating experience in London.
A. M.
Incredibly delicious food, fresh ingredients and the waitress was lovely too! Would definitely go back to try more 😍
P. B.
Had dinner here on a Friday night. Lyle’s is certainly not one of the 50 best restaurants in the world, and not really a Michelin star calibre restaurant.
The main menu was good, but relatively forgettable. The vegetarian menu was a big disappointment and we left most dishes unfinished. On the night we visited, service was both exceptionally slow and inattentive, and the seven courses took more than three hours to complete.
R. B.
Amazing food. Excellent wine selection. Great service.
M. H.
My family went for dinner. We were pleasantly surprised by the delicious, well-priced set menu. Even the seemingly simplest dishes were created with care and tasted amazing. I’m on a semi-diet and found each course light and fulfilling. The friendly wait staff and casual atmosphere made for a delightful time.
S. O.
I guess my expectations were too high as it was on my list for a while. I expected to be wowed by the food and service but it was ok. Not a fan of the artichokes with preserved lemons. Desserts, monk fish and mutton were the highlights.
H. K.
Excellent lunch! Every single dish was absolutely delicious. I admit that the menu didn’t really looked that interesting to me and I didn’t feel like I must have any specific dish. So this meal really surprised me..
The Jerusalem artichokes for example were amazing, so much flavor and different textures in such seemingly simple dish. It was one of my favorite meals in London- I was really impressed! Highly recommended
F.
The dishes are perfect, very tasty, well presented, decent portions for the style, ok prices. The wine list is partially annoying: too many "natural style" wines, not many options by the glass, almost all young wines. What I got was anyway very good. No sherries on the menu, dessert wine list a bit confusing. I loved the industrial look of the building and the beautiful big windows. The service was very good, but the dishes might be better paced. I'd definitely go back.
J. O.
Lyle’s was probably the most excited we were for a restaurant on our trip to the UK. It’s rated so high on the top 50 list and it’s not overly expensive at all.
The location is really cool. It was across from this building made by containers with some really unique stores, so I recommend getting there a bit early to check out the neighbourhood. The restaurant itself was very nice inside and also very casual, which I love.
Every night the menu changes based on what’s in season, so it can be a bit of a craps shoot. Ultimately, things were good for us but not great. Again, I think on any other given night, we may have been floored. The execution was perfect and we really enjoyed most dishes and just didn’t overly enjoy others. I would still highly recommend going as the value is incredible. For £60, this tasting menu and execution involved is incredibly inexpensive, especially for London.
H. A. M.
This restaurant has one Michlin star. It is rated number 36 on the list of the world best 50 restaurants. Decor is casual and basic which is fine. It is not unusual today for fine dining restaurants to have a casual atmosphere. However I have to admit that I found the place to be overrated. The food was average at best. Yes the ingredients were fresh but there was no creativity not taste in the dishes that we tried. They have one single tasting menu which is quite short. What really surprised me is that a member of our party did not like anchovies. Normally the restaurant would substitute that ingredient or the dish with something else. This occasion the restaurant completely ignored the course and did not provide any substitute nor an explanation. Quite a message to deliver for a fine dining restaurant.
S.
Truly one of the best meals I have had in a long time. Every course was completely delicious, the staff were amazing and the restaurant had a great atmosphere without being too noisy.
L. O.
We went in the evening and had the tasting menu with paring wines. The atmosphere is great, really stylish but low key. The staff talk you through each course which is lovely to hear. The food was delicious, so impressed! Only negative comment is I probably wouldn't get the wine pairing again, wasn't quite enough if it. Highly recommend this place. It's a great trip you go on to try all these tasty foods.
V. S.
It's alright, nothing too special compared to other michelin-starred establishments. Beetroot dish was the highlight for me personally. Atmosphere is casual (bordering too casual). Service was slow and inconsistent, definitely needs work.
A. R.
Seasonal fare with a contemporary twist on British ingredients.
Overall a very impressive experience. We asked the waiter for his opinion of what eat and drink during our visit and were not disappointed.
Despite a selection of both fish, vegetables and game, dishes came out in a appropriate order allowing us to savour more delicate flavours while building up to bolder dishes.
The star of the show for us was the deer grilled, seasoned and paired with a rich sauce which was absolutely outstanding.
I came here with no expectations, but now see what the hype is about. I look forward to our next trip.
A. W.
Great service with top quality ingredients. All the food was well prepared and cooked to perfection. The seafood in particular felt very fresh. Despite some of the menus not suiting our taste completely (daily changing menus) the things we tried were all excellent. Would like to come back and try new dishes. Price is what you would expect for a Michelin-starred place, but it still felt good value. Great place.
J. J.
In a class of its own hence it keeps banging out world top 100 restaurant lists. Try it you won’t regret it their staff are so helpful and knowledgeable of the menu especially if you need help with the extensive wine menu interesting hipster soft drink options. Set menu changes all the time so check it out before booking to make sure you like the look of the ingredients and if you get the option to add an oyster on with a seasonal dressing take it!!!
S. C.
Been meaning to try Lyle's for some time, and I was not disappointed. Their set menu changes daily and I came out of the meal pretty full (not overly). My fav - the flatbread. The staff were very welcoming and friendly - which adds to the overall experience!
J. H.
The best restaurant experience I've had in many years. Lyle's punches above it's weight, which is not easy to do in London. You can pay double up the road, but why bother when Lyle's is so good.
M. H.
I wanted to go to Lyle's for a long time. Having read a lot of good stuff about the place and having friends talking about it too I was a bit afraid I could only leave disappointed with my high expectations, but boy was I wrong! We arrived a bit early for our table but they were still able to sit us straight away. The whole team was super friendly and welcoming and had a very good attitude and a good atmosphere in the restaurant. The food was incredible, very tasty, nicely served and with a few surprises here and there. It's defiantly not the last I'm going there! Defiantly somewhere you need to go if you are in London!
L. D.
Outstanding experience! I recently attended with my husband for dinner. I am currently pregnant and some options were not possible for me to eat. The staff were incredible about this and could not have been more flexible or attentive. The food was absolutely divine! I cannot recommend this spot enough. Thank you for a great evening!
K. P.
Not exactly knocking it out of the park. Lyle’s food is ok, a couple of interesting flavours in their tasting menu mostly the snacks and the Guinea fowl which was phenomenal but the asparagus we had were limp and overcooked and the trout was a little fishy with a standard sauce blanc. Dessert was very simple, with custard and strawberries with no particular great elements. I was really looking forward to trying here having booked months in advanced but left a little underwhelmed.
G. B.
WOW! I cannot recommend Lyle's enough. Everything we had was excellent. We went for lunch to avoid the set menu price. Just the bread is worth going back to have. Each dish was better than expected. The staff were gracious and accommodating. We did not want to leave. I was also introduced to a couple new ingredients that I will be using myself in future. There is a bar where you can just order coffee, drinks, and bites. I would recommend popping in if you're in the area.
P. A.
High quality and unpretentious dining. Taster menu could not be faulted. attentive service without being overbearing. Highly recommended if you're looking for an excellent Shoreditch dining experience.
K. Z. N.
This place would have scored 5 stars if there was more flexibility to the dinner menu! The cooking was great spot on and tasty modern British but the rigidity of the dinner menu is just a shame as I love the lunch menu experimental food served and would really love the option to explore more during dinner ! Net net very nice food :)
L. A.
I had been once, years ago and loved the food. When lockdown came around and they started their meal boxes my partner and I enjoyed several. Now reopened, I was pleased to return and was not disappointed. Superb food, excellent service. The menu changes regularly but you won't be disappointed!
C. N.
Amazing experience. Incredible flavours and service. I enjoyed everything I tried, but from our menu that night my favourites were the carpaccio and the oysters. I've also enjoyed the fact that there was a pre-set menu - makes life so much easier to just trust the experience e2e and try very different types of food. Absolutely recommend for date nights or a friend gathering.
M. L.
This was my second experience at a Michelin star restaurant. The service at Lyle’s was very attentive and welcoming. We had so the tasting menu and were so full after, so it was really good value for all the food we got! For a 4 course meal it was only £69 for dinner! I wasn’t sure if it was a Michelin star at first because it didn’t have a white table cloth, which is apparently just a myth. Very relaxing atmosphere and chill vibes! Highly recommend!
S. S.
Wonderful place for dinner. Staff were friendly and food in general was excellent. Wine list was a little hard to decipher unless you know lots about wine but stay were there to help.
My meal started with really nice little bite of a focaccia like bread topped with roasted veg, and a hake humus thingy that was just delicious.
Next was asparagus with mangalitza pork and egg yolk. Nice acidity, while thing works very well.
Next was a rather anemic looking trout with beans and preserved lemon. All be elements were beautifully cooked. The acidity in this dish excited the first dish, not I didn't mind it. Good dish.
Dexter rib, artichoke and anchovies finished the savory dishes. Beautiful cook on the meat.
I elected to have the cheese course, which was good.
Dessert was a milk merengue with rhuhbarb fool. It was ok, my least favorite part of the meal.
C. M.
Lovely rainy day lunch. I had the wonderful mackerel and deviled rabbit livers dish. Both excellent with a nice dry white wine. This place always satisfies.
B. G.
Lunch Is incredibly refreshing from the cool soups with bursts of flavour to the tummy warming freshly baked bread and butter. A nice range of choices with lovely seasonal set menu’s or al a carte courses to make your mouth water! Attention to detail was a major factor in the beautifully presented savoury dishes. Whatever you do don’t skip dessert in fact get two or even three! The wine selection is nicely complemented with the food . The attentiveness of the staff and the melt your heart desserts won me over! We will definitely be back for dinner !
D. S.
An amazing seasonal menu and wine pairing. Such a great price for the standard of food. Would recommend.
V. C.
Was looking forward to dinner here but although average, it wasn't what I expected given the hype and its new fame. There is one set menu and it seems like lunch has much more choice and value. There is a separate bar menu though which we didn't check out. Good selection of wine and a couple of interesting cocktails.
The set menu obviously uses very seasonal ingredients and presumably changes often. Our menu had a sorrel and lovage theme. The sourdough bread was OK but is the only type. Bread and the pre-starter were served on one plate in the centre of the table which was odd. Oysters were delicious with the sorrel shaved ice. Other dishes were well-executed and there was no surprise in the flavour or accompaniments. Rib was medium rare (no other option I think) and came with some fat on the side (see the photo). Dessert was excellent with an airy cream, strawberry shaved ice and dried strawberries. The petits-fours of almond tarts were also very good.
Service was also average. Lots of staff, some very helpful and cheerful, but one waiter in particular was very uninterested and forgot 3 of our requests!
S. A.
Lyles is just pure beauty.
No other way to describe this candid wonderful restaurant. Poetry for mouth.
Best spot in London
M. T.
A menu that really highlights the seasonal ingredients. Amazing food and friendly service. There is only a set menu option for dinner. If you like to pick and choose your dishes then lunch might be a better option. Great space and well located in Shoreditch.
R. W.
Food was delicious, desserts were good but just one notch below the amazing starter and mains.
Would definitely recommend to take the wine selection together as well.
Super friendly staff.
N. P.
A love fest, at the price. I recommend a reservation. The place is sparsely decorated, with great effect. Very kind staff on all levels. The food was marvellous and I'm a vegetarian. The pumpkin soup was to die for. Chocolate mousse the only item that was not as good as the rest. Also, great music was played. Will return.
R. D.
Fantastic food. The tasting menu is always a pleasure of fresh seasonal food. And there is always several somethings I would have ordered anyway. The wine pairings are very good too!
M. M.
Delicious restaurant with no one star dish, but in fact a few. If you can just order as many plates as you can to share, you'll realise that the dishes are so fresh and thoughtfully created, they will complement each other still. Our waitress was so helpful with organising our order into an appropriate split of starters and mains, while sharing suggestions too. Light yet flavoursome, I can't wait to return again.
G. O. d. C.
One of the best food experiences I had in my life, savoury plates with creative use of ingredients, everything done perfectly and all plates really astonishing surprises.
M. S.
Quick easy fine dinning style dishes here. £59 a head for a daily changing set menu comprised of 4 courses with 3 extras not in the menu. Some interesting ideas here like smoked tempura style kale, anchove brocolini with chives, lamb didn't do much for me, desert was great a quince meringue that reminded me of a maccaron. Would go again knowing I'll probably get something completely different.
H. T.
Lyle's is a great spot for a long lunch. The plates are designed for sharing which is wonderful as you get to try lots of different things. The menu is innovative and everything we tried was delicious. Service was also spot on.
c. h.
Excellent late night dinner. Although we had to wait 30mins for our table after the reservation time. We didnt mind as free bubbles and smiles were handed out. Simple and elegant food. Knowledgeable staff. Classy meal
J. P.
Fantastic service! Friendly and knowledgeable.
Food was very good but nothing to shout about.
Wines (which had no preservative) were awful.
We were disappointed and felt the restaurant is overhyped.
C. S.
Went for a perfect Birthday dinner there a few nights ago. Every dish was spectacular and we left stuffed. Great staff, great atmosphere and great food. Highly recommended.
A. S.
Excellent place for lunch or diner. You will be tasting new products such as aspen and salicornia or amazing quality products such as lamb or trout. The wine list is diverse and finely choosen. The service is impeccable and the advices for wines are remarkable. You can invite your friends, family, colelagues or date there without hesitation!
D. A. d. T.
Amazing food, service and prices for a Michelin restaurant. Can't fault a single dish, the wine pairing was exquisite and the tasting menu was just the right amount.
S. S.
Very tasteful presentations from a rather unique menu. Everything very delicious. The only dent into this rather memorable experience was the very dry waiter who couldn't hide his dislike for us (!!). I liked the clean and modern interior as well with lots of daylight. It's on the pricy side but worth it and top choice for a good foodies' adventure.
S. N.
Went to Lyle’s for lunch. Love all the dishes from appetizers to dessert. Great service and amazing food. Most casual and down to earth 50 best. Would love to go back again and again.
O. L.
One of the best meals I’ve had in a long time. Every single thing we ate was delicious, and £59/head set menu for food is pretty good value for Michelin star food
M. Z.
Really friendly and helpful staff and amazing food
S. H.
Impeccable food and service. Great wine too.
P. B.
5* for the food , 3* for the price and wine.
Food was really enjoyable, it’s obvious they spend a lot thinking about the food and really go out there to come up with new techniques. Stand outs were the pollack and the chicken. Probably one of the best chicken breasts I’ve had. £55 for the set menu was worth it.
Staff was great, very knowledgeable.
Downside for me though was the wine(avg at best if was half the price) and just general overall cost. Just over £300 for two. Can’t say it wasn’t advertised and we weren’t the ones choosing it. But still I think grace sent coined the term correctly, come here with OPM (other people’s money)
J. w.
A beautiful space and the service was fantastic. Unfortunately the food was just okay and not very memorable so for the price I was left disappointed. Happy to have ticked it off as I’ve wanted to go for ages but won’t be going back again soon.
B. C.
Great food and service. Laid back enough to relax but staff are attentive an knowledgeable. The food was as good as I had expected, and I was expecting great food. Left full and satisfied.
K. Y.
Prices here are extremely reasonable for the quality. Ambience is pretentiously unpretentious so that's totally up the Shoreditch alley. I love the food and James is a really nice guy (met him at WastED at Selfridges).
N. P.
Nice restaurant, informal, with modern architecture and essential equipment. The service is easy but precise and pay a lot of attention to your needs, you can see the kitchen and make some little changes to the set menù.
Wine list is short but nice with some surprising choices (Rossese); the prices are sometimes high, but we are in London.
Sourdough bread is perfect.
The menù is set, 4 dishes, one entree, some cookies at end: the steak is great and the squid is something unforgettable..
I was here with my kids and the experience was really nice
s. h.
Nice . Set menu only which wasn’t ideal as I wasn’t that hungry and was around 6 courses . But all dishes lovely, simple but nice ingredients . The service was really great.
m. m.
It is a fairly lower priced too restaurant. Therefore, it is a good choice for a trial of great tastes in london. However, with a standard of Michelin and top restaurant, this is a comparably chill place with relaxing atmosphere. The food is creative and nice with a bit heavier flavor. The service is considerable.
R.
Best sour dough, creative menus, fresh ingredient, good value!
C. B.
Very nice restaurant indeed. Nice vibe, terrific food, interesting wines but the best part of the meal was actually the sweet section.
B. C.
The Good:
- The food was amazing, incredible.
- The sourdough which you receive with the menus is very good and I wished I could buy some for takeaway.
- In general the menu is very well designed and changes daily based on what is good.
- The price for the food is also very good, 56 per person for a menu of 4 dishes including amuse-bouches is a very competitive price and definitely value for money.
- Service was also very good as one would expect for this sort of place
The Bad:
The only reason why I didn't give Lyle's 5-stars is due to their wine list. The wines by the glass weren't very good and we only had 3 glasses each to drink but the headache the next day was the sign that the quality of the wine wasn't up to standard with the food.
They luckily let us taste some wines for the red to go with the fowl, pictured below, and the Australian pinot noir was not a good wine and I was surprised that they would have it on their menu.
I was told that this is due to them trying to find 'alternative' organic wines, however, I have had much better organic wines at different restaurants.
Unfortunately they did not offer a wine-pairing with their menu but if all the wines would have been the ones from their wine list (by the glass) maybe it was better that way.
Verdict:
All in all this is the place if you love food but do not like to drink wine. Alternatively if you go with a group their wines by a bottle seemed to be a better selection than their wine by the glass selection. Or I would recommend asking the price of corkage, although this gets difficult with a varying menu.

Amazing food, priced fairly
Staffs very really friendly
Nice industrial setup too
Recommended 🥰

Very good food, good selection of wines, very good service. Lunch menu is well worth the price. I keep coming back whenever in London.

Beautiful food, friendly service, lovely setting. Perfect lunch spot!

Within a simple and Spartan building is this excellent restaurant. If you like food then do eat here. A salad of bitter greens with some mussels that somehow is infused with wood smoke is divine. Pigs head terrine is very smooth and come with a slice of toast to spread it on. Mains was a fish called Pollect cooked well in a butter sauce. Free wifi is here. Please book ahead as this is a popular destination.

Hands down best meal in London. Amazing organic orange wines. Grouse was incredible as were the selection of small sharing plates. Fresh bread and smoked butter- delish!
C. K.
Simple British food using high quality ingredients. Went for lunch and thought the set lunch was a good value.
K. D.
Friendly service and top class food! Ideal for couples or groups of friends as the dishes are pretty filling for one person! 👌
M. P.
Creative menu, seasonal, and very tasty. The staff is kind and accommodating and the space stylish and simple.
c. w.
The location is ok and the distance to the next table is so adequate.
The mood is good enough but the taste is too olive oily and salty for several dishes. Some dishes are exactly same taste. It slightly boring Without wine, you must not be able to eat.
However, some simple dishes like white asparagus and the ice cream are tremendous.
It is hard to show the score promptly.
S. K.
Went for lunch - nice, unpretentious but undoubtedly classy and delicious. My pictures will say more than my words :)
K. C.
Excellent presentation of food, very nice staff! Absolutely enjoyed🥰
L. B.
Charming, minimal interiors and good acoustics. Servers are generous with the fresh sourdough, and plates are small but satisfying.
Z.
Hearty Modern British fare with patient attention and excellent service.
O. P.
The food was ok, nothing very special really. I expected a bit more from the service, which was quite slow.
E. K.
Excellent! I only wish there were also ala carte menu at dinner service.
P. K.
You guys are amazing! Such a great evening, amazing food, fantastic friendly service. Don’t change anything!
J. D.
Lyles undoubtedly go to considerable effort with their food sourcing and menu so there's much to praise here. However we found the service bizzarely intrusive and the dining room both rather cramped and quite airless.
Each dish was delivered with its own short introduction. Is that really necessary for a small serving of lamb? This just seemed obtrusive and slightly pointless.
Food was tasty without being hugely impressive.
Overall for this price I think there are better options.
V. S.
Absolutely delicious food. A real celebration and elevation of rustic and homely food - which is always such a great pleasure. Great service, attentive and well informed staff. Great experience overall.
M. N.
Well sourced produce prepared simply, representing good value. Baffling some of the reviews here calling this kind of food pretentious but what do they know? They should stick to mince on toast.
Best stick to the normal menus rather than guest series. James' food is rarely beaten by the guests chefs.

Excellent dining experience with a guest chef. Will return to try the regular menu!

One of the best restaurants I've been to. Service is on point and the food & presentation is excellent!

Good. Would visit again for dinner for sure. Most dishes were not salty enough for me though

Brilliant food, great wines (and amazing explanations/lessons about same. Best, friendliest, most unpretentious service! Great work!!

We had a great experience here, the food was fantastic and we really enjoyed learning about all the wines from the sommelier.
Had a great casual atmosphere.

Taking the patronising formality out of fine dining. Lovely friendly service and most importantly blow away food!

Great food, innovative and at the right price, easy to book and very nice and chill ambiance!

Always good.
And I love their wine selection.

Best lunch in London ever
G. H.
I think my bar was a little high based on reviews and the fact it was top 50 in world..... However, It is nice and laid back. Good meat quality and sauces. Wine offering was decent. Pudding was a little slow to come out but it was a more chilled atmosphere, so didn't mind.
However there is just as good if not better in London for cheaper.
M. T.
Impressive casual lunch with tasty dishes. Asparagus in season!
A. L.
The food, the venue, the staff — everything is on-point and absolutely brilliant at Lyle’s. Dinner for 1 on a Monday evening at the counter was the best way to begin the week. The vegetarian menu was gorgeous, and I highly recommend the cheese course because, why miss out on cheese? But also because the raw honey that comes with it is simply ethereal. One can tell that Lyle’s is a labour of love for food, quality ingredients, and impeccable service. Every accolade is well-deserved. Bravo team Lyle’s!

Delicious vegetarian & non-vegetarian tasting menu, relaxed atmosphere, dangerously tasty brown butter cake
J. T.
Came for the vegetarian tasting menu on a Saturday night.
Food was brilliant (my girlfriend couldn't stop talking about the celeriac soup) and it has a really good atmosphere and decor - very spacious. Friendly staff. Wine list is on the expensive side, but I guess that's to be expected.
N. P.
This may be a touch sentimental, which I guess isn't British, but I had a very pleasant and welcoming evening here when I was visiting London by myself. I was just walking about and happened to stumble upon the restaurant. The (set) menu was pricy, but not over the top. However the staff was welcoming and I didn't feel as if I entered a snobby or pretentious place which I was definitely not in the mood for as a lone traveler in a strange city. I sat at the bar and the bartender was very gracious and friendly. The dishes were splendid, surprising and original. They talked about every dish and specified the ingredients. It was just a lovely experience. Good on you mates.
S. C.
Remarkable place. I loved the unique menu (adaptable according to your diet vegetarian or vegan options are possible), you feel that the dishes are elaborated by someone who cares about the products. The flavours were amazing! The wine menu is original, I really enjoyed the wines we tasted, some were very surprising in taste. I also loved the ambiance. Our waitress and the person who welcomed us were particularly nice and friendly. You can tell that people do care about their customers here.
Thank you so much for the lovely time we had at your restaurant on Friday.

excellent food, fantastic attentive staff, perfect for an occasion

After several failed attempts of timing on our part each time we were in the city, we finally found ourselves an opportunity to check out Lyle's! Easy to reach, minutes walk from the nearby overground stop. After the hype of numerous years, the experience was disappointing. The menu consisted of 4 listed items plus 2 small starters not listed. The restaurant wasn't full but for some reason we weren't greeted by a server for quite some time after seating - I had to stare at someone to get their attention. The onion fritter and pumpkin soup starters were pretty good though the soup was too salty. Overall the dishes that followed weren't bad, but weren't impressive or wowing by any means. They all tasted clean that's about it. I don't like mutton so the substitute was a grilled eel. While flavored well, it wasn't deboned well - bit into several pieces of bone. Lastly, the dessert of ice cream and mousse was just so uninspiring - I can order that at any basic sushi restaurant. Not worth the price.
P. A.
Lovely chilled out, unpretentious restaurant with a daily changing, seasonal menu. They often have guest chef takeovers so it's worth checking their website first. Beautiful mackerel and beetroot and perfectly cooked lamb with anchovy and punterelle. Pudding (chocolate mousse and ice cream) was a bit of a miss and tasted weirdly of bleach. Overall good, will return.

I'm writing this review all the way from Australia which is a testament to how amazing Lyle's is. The whole team, especially Gabriella have been an absolute joy to in all our correspondence and I cannot wait to visit once we are able to travel again. I can't thank Gabriella and the whole team enough and would recommend Lyle's to anyone and everyone!!
E.
Absolutely loved it. We tried both set menus, veggie and not veggie and they were both excellent. The recommended wine was also very good and reasonably priced. I personally wasn't keen on the dessert but the others liked it.
Lovely staff and ambience
S. G.
Wonderful! We keep coming back. Chefs are doing an amazing job. A simple tasting menu of 5 dishes is seasonal, full of flavour and affordable. The portion size is spot on – it's actually one of the few restaurants where you don't feel bloated after having a set menu.
The venue is informal, has minimalistic decor and feels light and pleasant. Our waiters have been very friendly, kindly explained every dish, and recommended really good wine.
Thank you again, we'll be back!
R. J.
Last Monday I had the great pleasure of dining at Lyle's. Fantastic!
Upon entering, I was pleasantly surprised by the informal atmosphere in the restaurant. I had not counted on this at a restaurant with a Michelin star and was over dressed. Quickly took the tie off and did enjoy a delicious and very affordable menu (four courses + amuses 59 Pound).
Although every dish was a delicious taste sensation, I had two absolute favorites. I'm an egg lover so the Asparagus with a beautiful silky egg yolk made my heart beat faster. A classic combination, perfectly executed. It was too tasty! ;-) Fortunately there was still bread on the table and I could eat my plate with it, until the last drop. My other favorite: the smoked Eel
V. T.
Excellent service and wines. The food is good. You would expect more from some of the ingredients - the mushrooms, for example, somewhat lacked in flavour. The dessert needed more flavour as well, however this was compensated for by the almond cookie in the end.
P. M.
Lyle's is just great. The food is a mixture of familiar and unusual flavour combinations that are delicious and interesting. And the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. Highly recommended.

Lovely weekend lunch with friends.
Maybe not a top 40 in the World's Best Restaurants list, as it didn't blew me away but delicious anyway (please note that I'm not a connoisseur).
The menu is tapas style and seafood focused without being hard on the wallet (about £40 pp with a glass of wine).
Loved the decor, the laid back feel, from service to plating. Chairs could me more comfortable though (too hard).
Location is great too: you can easily combine a nice spot of shopping or sightseeing before or after your meal.
Will go back if in the area
K. A.
Really good choice of ingredients and flavor combinations. Every dish has its unique little surprise. Unfortunately we find the dishes to be a tad bit too salty, but at least they were consistent with salt level. So we know it's not mis-seasoned, it's just our preference.
M. C.
Went there on a Monday for a work lunch and although you can tell that the ingredients are premium and the kitchen staff talented I did find it a bit underwhelming. The dishes were good ideas but a bit mono-dimensional.
I get the reviews that are saying that the decor is a bit uninspiring but I did like it, it makes it a bit less formal.
I guess I'll have to try it again.
H. O.
Amazing food & they cater for vegans
A. K.
Great service and fresh elegant food. How do they get bbq flavour in that clam dish? Absolutely delicious
S. C.
An absolutely faultless special-occasion dinner last night. Everything on the tasting menu was delicious, and there's also extra delicious snacks that are not mentioned. But what made the night complete was the warmth and friendliness of our waitress, Lauren. When I expressed admiration for the sourdough, she went to tell the bread chef Jack who came to our table towards the end of the night and we spent 5 minutes discussing how they make their bread so delicious. Such service and obvious care needs to be applauded. Well done Lyles and keep up the very good work. ***** Very highly recommended *****

Lovely creative food, some delicious flavours. A no fuss pleasant environment, East London industrial feel with friendly staff.
Set menu is great value and really interesting and changes every day.
J. P.
I went for lunch and it was one of the the better meals I've ever had and at a very reasonable price. I actually would be surprised if anywhere else on the 50 Best Restaurants list was more reasonably priced. All of the flavors meshed perfectly. Even the bread and butter was noticably above par. I even ate the leaves that came with my meal. I never eat leaves. Would definitely go back and try something else, too.
C. J.
A bright and clean dining space. Food and service both exceptional. Seasonal greats presented with flair and imagination in a relaxed environment.
L. B.
Wanted to like it so much more than I did.
Lyle's ambition and menu is laudable. A minimalist English restaurant with Scandinavian influence, it promises to open up your palate. Lunch for 3 seemed an ideal introduction. Friendly service got us off on the right foot. But the food was disappointing. A beef broth was more liquid than broth, and portion size didn't merit it's place in the mains section on the menu. Monkfish came, and again was tiny. The fight to tease flesh off the bone demanded more calories than the fish itself. Whilst full of flavour, it was overcooked. Shoreditch needs restaurants with Lyle's lofty aspirations, but they failed to reach their own standards on my visit.
M. P.
Phenomenal. Incredible dishes. Unpretentious given its acclaim. Welcoming knowledgeable service. I'd give 6 stars if I could
K. R.
Really lovely restaurant which offers a fresh interesting menu. The service wasn't particularly good and the wines weren't very nice. I was expecting a lot more from a restaurant with such a high ranking and a Michelin star. I do like the Saturday menu where you can pick what you want. But I wouldn't go there again.
T. A.
The food was faultless - all plates were returned empty! Service was, however, a bit hit and miss, with a few members of staff not as warm as you might expect at a place of this standard. I don't think the way they have organised it helps: rather than having one or two waiters who attended to your table, there were loads of them (some of whom made you feel like you were getting in the way of doing their jobs 🤔)
S. S.
Great restaurant located on the high street in Shoreditch. Solid and innovative British cooking and a set menu which is revised daily. You'll be hard pressed to find better value on the top 50 list, and as delicious dishes across London. A talented chef for sure!
J. S.
It's rare to find somewhere that manages to produce such strong cooking without a pretentious atmosphere and dare I say price. The menu (a set arrangement but catering to various dietary requirements with aplomb) is seasonal British. It's verging on haute cuisine but manages to feel special and comforting at the same time. A particular highlight was the Hake and the smoked eel. The only potential bone of contention could be the stripped back aesthetic and music but this is befitting the locale.
J. L.
We went for the tasting menu (£59pp) which is very reasonable. Food was simply presented and cooked with a focus on bringing out the best of the ingredients used. Really enjoyed everything that was put in front of us! Service was also warm and friendly with an informal style.
L. G.
Beautifully executed dishes always using seasonal produce. The sea kale, kipper broth & yolk was perfection! We shared an elegant, slightly volatile but curious and clever wine, which we loved. The service was exceptional; attentive, knowledgeable and friendly.
J. W.
Beware the brown butter cakes!
Amazing food, great location and perfect service!
A.
East London's best restaurant - hands down.
Lyle's, along with The Clove Club, definitely have raised the bar in Shoreditch, from having a top casual dining scene to full-blown Michelin starred greatness.
The food is always outstanding. Prices are very fair considering the superlative quality. Wines also chosen impeccably, and the overall vibe and ambiance just makes me want to go back each time.
Amazing.
L. T.
I truly hope that this restaurant will survive this pandemic and I will definitely visit them again after the lockdown. My friends and I had our Pre-Christmas dinner there once. Probably the best British food I've ever had.
T. V. M.
The food was impeccable. The service was outstanding. There dishes were simple in nature but complex in flavor. The presentation was perfect in every dish. Really didn't have a favorite dish because everything was that good.
E. R.
Had a fabulous dinner here last night celebrating a birthday. It did not disappoint, and I had high hopes after reading so much about it! Brilliant service, I'd added a note about a birthday on the booking and so nice that they actually read it! All in all a really lovely evening
T. Y.
Too salty for me and my wife. Service is good.
S. S.
Top location, nice atmosphere, friendly professional staff but above all, incredibly tasty food. The beautiful decorated plates make your mouth water and the combination of seasonal ingredients are real taste bombs!
The best that Shoreditch has to offer
T. R.
Inventive, quality, surprising, daring are a few of the adjectives you could use to describe Lyle's. Dinner menu is a set meal, coming with a flurry of extra and amazing bread. Vegan and vegetarian options are available which offer the same culinary experience as the omnivorous option. The wine menu is just as surprising and adventurous as the food one. Atmosphere is just the right balance of Trendy background music just loud enough to cover the neighbors conversation but not yours... A real nice balance and a welcome addition to the Shoreditch scene.
L. M.
Another favourite during our short trip to London was was Lyle's, a restaurant in Shoreditch by the St Johns team. Our chances of nabbing a dinner reservation for the get-what-you're-given menu so we popped in for a late lunch. Florence strawberries with baked cream is right up here for my favourite desserts of all time. Make sure you had a healthy lashing of butter on the sourdough - incredible! Loved the small plates featuring seasonal, interesting ingredients. Would definitely have loved to get a dinner reservation.. next time. Fantastic staff, clean pared back white washed fitout and amazing menu. A must!
S. M.
A wonderful view of modern British cooking with the best ingredients of the season. Flavors were big in every dish and always carried a balance between salty and a little sweet, either from fruit or fresh summer vegetables. Delightfully simple desserts and coffee rounded out a great meal, and the organic saison and rosé by the glass that day provided an extra delicious surprise.
L. S.
Went for a casual drink at the bar and small snacks which me and my girlfriend really enjoyed. Most wine are biodynamic/organic and some are unfiltered which I really loved. Started with amazing 2017 reisling which was delightful however a but too rich after a while with elderflowery bouquet and rich apricot undertones for a reisling. Bread was a bit stodgy but did not lack in flavour at all was deliciois sour dough better than core's sd. Corn on the menu wasn't stated on the cob, if this was the case we wouldn't have ordered it as its not a dainty dish u go to a top 50 sp restaurant for? That was followed by an extremely smoky eel dish with girolles and tomatoes in a butter emulsion. Very much enjoyed, you can't really go wrong with properly smoked fish and good veg but felt it was very overpowering to the delicately flavoured girolles.
All in all loved the vibe and service staff were very pleasant and definitely would go back but have the tasting menu.
J. N.
Went here for lunch and loved it. For a Michelin starred restaurant, it certainly had a relaxed vibe. Not stuffy at all. The staff are on point and a great blend of high class dining attention to detail and cheerful friendliness. Expect to shell out a bit of cash for the meal but the quality was worth it.
L. W.
Visited Lyle's for special birthday dinner. Really enjoyed the meal, but wish they'd had a matched wine option. The staff choose great wines for each course, but it meant we ended up drinking way more than planned & we were quite uncomfortable by the end.
Staff are very good. Dining area felt a little sterile & impersonal.
S. D.
We really enjoyed our meal at Lyle's and the food is as good an anything you will find in London. The service was informal but attentive, and our waitress was knowledgeable about both the food and wine list - indeed she gave me three 'tasters' before choosing my red wine! The food was uniformly excellent throughout the menu, with the monkfish being perfectly cooked, and the venison properly rested and rare. The deserts were wonderful, with the stand out dish being an apple and sage granita served with goats curd and an anise crisp. It isn't cheap, but the food and service is better than many places which charge more.
L.
White washed tiled walls, heavy metal light fixtures, light wooden tables, sturdy silverware and a heady delicious aroma. Walking into this restaurant is walking into dinner at your ever so successful, effortlessy cool but still down to earth friend's new pad. The staff are laid back but still attentive. A Michelin star restaurant that doesn't make you feel bad for asking for tap water. I would have taken snaps of the food but it's a here today gone tomorrow kinda menu. All I'll say is that you're in good hands. All four courses and two "snacks" on the set dinner menu just flowed beautifully and tasted delicious. I'll be dreaming of the guinea fowl for days and a dessert of pumpkin, whey caramel and sage was a brilliant mix of salty sweet awesomeness. Dinner here is a leisurely affair, you won't be rushed and you'll be plotting your return before you've even left.
F. H.
I had heard great things and even then it out did itself; the food and the staff were outstanding. Set dinner menu is great value for money, perfect portion size and the staff were fantastic! Basically, I can't wait to go back, lunch or dinner.
Y. W.
Top-notch British cooking in a semi-casual setting - a la carte at lunch and a set menu at dinner. Lovely open space in a restored Lipton tea factory. Knowledgeable and friendly staff. They even accommodated our little one!
S. I. M.
I’m an adventurous eater but initially I was daunted by the menu of pig’s head or asparagus and bee pollen but everything we tried was delicious and this is one of my new go to spots! Absolutely loved it, a perfect place for a low key celebration or a date.
A. M.
One of the most fantastic meals I have ever had. I had the tasting menu and a glass of beautifully aged Spanish red wine and I have never been more sated in my life. A stranger off the street recommended Lyle's and it was a great suggestion. Well done!
S. T.
The food here is of exceptional quality with food prepared and aged on site. Everyday offers up a new menu too. The dishes are on the small side however, so it's advisable to order a lot and share amongst your table. My favourite dish here to date would be the onglet which just melted in my mouth. Oh my god. Check this place out.
B. G.
We went to Lyle's to celebrate my girlfriend's birthday. I wasn't sure at the beginning but the reviews were so good that I decided to go ahead. And oh boy, how glad I am. The food was incredible. All courses were very good but I did prefer the savoury ones. We will definitely be back and we recommend it to anyone wanted a chilled out dinner for business or romance. To be honest, this place has one the best menus in town!
E. A.
Amazing experience, great food!
M. K.
Extremely laid back place where you get haute cuisine interpretations of classic British fare from a set 7-course menu that changes on a daily basis. The ingredients are fresh, the staff is very friendly and knowledgeable, and the wine and beer selection is decent. Very reasonably priced for a Michelin star restaurant in one of the most expensive cities in the world.
f. s.
Definitely overhyped. The food is decent but the wine list is really unreasonably overpriced. Also serving a bottle of white wine without something to keep it cool is just not good. The whole experience just felt like an overpriced visit to a pretentious place which is really just average. Unremarkable overall, I would not recommend it, nor go back.
B. P.
This is the best restaurant in London for very high quality British food. I am vegetarian, and it is rare for the menu to be so creative, exquisite and delicious. The menu is always new and fresh, the staff are wonderful.
This is a fantastic place, one to visit again and again.
S. M.
Very relaxed and casual atmosphere. The food is awesome - they use high quality British ingredients. Best to come with a few people so you can sample a variety of dishes.
D. C.
We had a fantastic meal washed down with equally great wine. Relaxed atmosphere and open kitchen. Juicy mallard. Fab pumpkin starter. Just wish I chose the pudding my colleague had. That was a great coffee creme brulle.
B. W.
This place is everything that dinner out should be.
Greeted immediately at the door, coats cloaked, we were seated. Given it was our anniversary we asked for a more private table, which was granted without hesitation or fuss. The atmosphere was relaxed, but elegant and sophisticated. When booking I had noted that I was gluten intolerant, and I didn't have to remind them - all courses were served gluten-free, and where necessary the element had been substituted rather than removed (which often occurs). Additional to our five courses, we received a few starter plates. The Monkfish was fresh and tasty, the deer was tender, the apple granita perfectly intercepted the heaviness of the red meat, and the meal was finished with a delectable chocolate dessert. Plates were cleared promptly upon finishing each course, and after ordering only one glass of wine each we weren't pushed for more. After my boyfriend asked a waiter about the dessert, James Lowe appeared two minutes later with a takeaway container containing chocolate with which the dessert was made.
Some reviews have made negative comments regarding the nature of a set menu, but I found that this gave me more time to enjoy the company of my boyfriend. Each course was superb and I'd happily take James with me (if he were idle and willing) to select every future restaurant meal of mine.
R. S.
Creative cooking. Lovely vibes. Fantastic foods. Food much better than wine. Staff very attentive but a little bit over enthusiastic if that makes sense. A little overpriced. Like the location and interior simplicity
J. P. R.
I loved it. The food was so good, amazing y flavours and combination. I loved the fact that the menu is changing constantly. The service was also very good and the wine superbe. Be ready to be surprised and enjoy the experience.
V. S.
Friendly service, great food. The wine list is filled with things to discover. If you are used to Central European pricing, then London prices might seem exuberant but Lyle's reprents a really good price/quality for London. Lyle's is in fact a much more ambitious restaurant then the setting suggests.
Definitely recommended

Okay, so I had this lamb croquet or whatever it was and it's gonna haunt me for the rest of my life as the absolutely perfect piece of food. My boyfriend took me there for my birthday. Beautiful. I can't have dairy, so I got alternative dessert with wild strawberries. Funny how two spoons can take you back to 1990s at your grandma's country house. Thank you, guys
L. R.
I actually thought that Lyle's delivered very well. It's hard to run a place with such a low price point in east London. This is usually done by serving very small portions to keep the spend up. I found that setting the menu and using underused ingredients led to a great meal.
The dishes are mainly comprised of three or four elements seasonal and interesting. It was priced fairly to slightly over for a 1 star.
Service was good and attentive, the dining space is slightly strange similar in comfort to st Johns bread and wine but trying to be more fine dining.
W. M.
Lyle's is a restaurant that I cannot recommend highly enough. The food really lived up to the high expectations that the 38th best restaurant in the world comes with.
A really relaxed atmosphere is extremely inviting. The space is very functional, with an open kitchen and simple furniture. The best way to eat here is to share plates, and the price is surprisingly reasonable with the average dish costing £15.
In summary, sublime seasonally inspired food, in a relaxed atmosphere. Lyle's should definitely be on your list if it isn't already.
O. O.
Do you have a vegan menu? Would love to visit you
T. C.
Fantastic - probably Shoreditch's 2nd best restaurant after The Clove Club! We went for lunch as I fancied the a la carte choice (as oppose to the set dinner menu) and had the dexter's flank and john dory; both were superb. The steak was juicy, tender and flavorsome and the fish was moist and perfectly cooked.
The space is cool and airy and you are not squeezed in next to other diners. There is room to enjoy your own privacy, which is hard to come by these days dining in London restaurants. The service was attentive, charming and helpful; adding to a really comfortable and enjoyable dining environment. Finally, their home made bread is possibly the best bread i've ever tasted - that's worth a trip on its own.
M.
Love the restaurant's symplistic, charming style and decor. I had the pleasure of enjoying the dinner service here and there were flashes of brilliance such as their monkfish with blood orange. Some dishes were much weaker than others such as their dessert of chocolate mousse and buckwheat icecream. Though overall I did enjoy my meal.
Service on the night however was poor. Servers were notably absent or extremely disinterested and unmotivated, hampering the overall experience.
M. Q. L.
Very good service and food delicately prepared. Tasted really good and great presentation. Spacious seating as well! Small portions though so don't expect to get full with one dish.
d. u.
The food is absolutely superb, especially the delica pumpkin with whey butter - which is a huge surprise to me since I am not a big fan of pumpkin. All the dishes were simple yet excellently creative with well-balanced flavors. The service made us feel right at home. And lastly, whoever is in charge of the playlists during service, you the bomb. Counting the days 'til my return to Lyle's.
T. F.
the restaurant is very casual for a place, which made it on the top 50 list but thats not a bad thing. lyles is a casual place for extreme fine dining. Every dish was great some of them even extraordinary. The service, while casual, was extremely attentive and friendly. If I would live in London I would make this my regular haunt.
T. B.
I loved the vibe here. Staff were personable, the dining area unfussy and clean-cut. I didn't enjoy the prawns we had as a starter, the flavour wasn't agreeable to any of us, nor eating them with shells on as encouraged. But I savoured every mouthful of the hake I had as a main, of which there were very few.
M. N.
Upscale flavoursome food. Small and expensive portions
K. S.
A reasonably priced unpretentious fine dining restaurant which puts effort and enthusiasm into its vegetarian menu! There are meat options available too but it's worth a special trip for the veggie option. Great natural wines too.
M. D.
Great value for some amazing quality food.
C. H.
Lovely tasting menu!
Went to lyles for my partners 30th birthday, the staff were great, very knowledgeable and easy to talk with. They provided a small cake with a candle in for his birthday.
Food was delicious, very delicate and easy to enjoy. Great value and the wine list wasnt too expensive as well.
Great place to take friends or family for an important occasion or at that price just a normal occasion!
F. T.
We popped into Lyle's for a light lunch on a Friday.
The starters all sounded really good so we ordered about one of everything.
The first was the sea urchin. I've only every tried sea urchin once in my life, which was probably a bad one to start with. My two other dining companions seemed to be big fans of it, so I took a tiny spoonful of it just to try it once more to see if I liked it.
Unfortunately I'm still not a fan of sea urchin, but based on their more expert opinion on it, it was a really good portion and very fresh - 'tastes of the sea' as they said...
I really loved the duck liver parfait which was really rich and creamy - great to be eaten with bread. Another favourite of mine was the smoked eel, beetroot and horseradish.
The cod tongues and ramson were so soft, they literally melt in your mouth.
Other dishes that we tried were the white sprouting broccoli and spiced yoghurt, and the lamb's sweetbread, heart and little gem. All very satisfying.
I have been here once before for dinner for the tasting menu, which may be worth checking out if you ever decide to visit.
The food here is simple yet tasty, and not overly-complicated.
I would recommend a visit to find out for yourself.
M. B.
Fabulous food and excellent service. Definitely going again.
L. C.
Open discount market with alot of fruits and vegetables to buy in good price
D. B.
I came here on a weekday evening to celebrate my husband's birthday. The meal was delicious - every dish was superb. The servers were amazing and helped suggest a lovely wine for our meal.
A. G.
Went on Friday and food was absolutely outstanding and the service impeccable too - incredible value and probably half of what it would cost you elsewhere for the same quality. Highly recommended!
D. A.
At Lyle's I had the best cappuccino I've ever had. Basically tried the whole menu' and the filter coffee , especially the Colombian by Koppi, was amazing too.
The barista here is so on point.
Will definitely be back for coffee and hopefully will try the restaurant service soon.
F. V.
Great great food, in a relaxed atmosphere with friendly staff. You'd expect to find this quality of fine food in a more up-tight and serious environment but it is the complete opposite here. Price is also reasonable for the quality of the food we get.
L. V.
Laid back atmosphere, excellent food: 5 stars!! If I had to find a defect, the dessert was a bit underwhelming...
W. V.
Good, but expected more interesting dishes...
D. S.
The new kid on the block and making quite a stir as far as young affordable fine dining in Shoreditch goes. The kitchen puts together a 4 course tasting menu, that changes seasonally and the simple decor puts all the focus on the food which is delicious.
At less than £50 a head for food and wine makes for a great night out.
N. C.
Delicious, creative, local, seasonal, balanced. Excellent value for money.
R. S.
Absolutely outstanding. Fantastic casual atmosphere, with minimalist industrial decor. Service was impeccable without being overbearing. Staff all friendly and sharp. Food was incredible from bread/butter to individual dishes and Petit fors. They seem to extract the most intense flavour from simple ingredients. Nothing but praise for Lyles.
A. N.
Absolutely excellent, perfect food, wonderful staff
M. L.
The egg salad with fried artichoke followed by the smoked eel dish was a little bit too heavy going for me. Having said that, loved the little snacks and mackerel with cucumber/almond soup, so would go back again.
B. H.
This is like the posh version of St. John's. Been there 2 times and it was great. They reduce their dishes to the very essence which I really like. Great produce and friendly service. Interior is very down to earth.
A. Y.
The food is unbelievable. When i walked in to the restaurant, i have high expectations. But it was completely blew away by what i was greeted. Food is fresh, seasonal, creative and last but not least, taste very good.
B. R.
Lyle, my man, the absolute man. That monkfish was unreal. Who da man? You da man Lyle.
C. H.
Expensive but really good British cooking. Menu is seasonal and the wine list varies regularly. Unless you're loaded or expensing, it's a special occasion sort of place.
P. H.
Superb atmosphere, food and staff
D. F.
The thing that striked me about this place is the almost minimal yet still beautfful setting to eat. By the Tea Building in Shoreditch it was wonderful natural lighting that I took many pictures of. Similar to St John.
In terms of the meals the highlights of this ever changing seasonal menu (as of May 16th May) were:
Starters:
- Asparagus and duck egg. Very delicate and subtle flavour.
- Raw Dexter Rib was ok. The Mullet Roe was interesting. Nice and crispy.
- Cod’s tongue, mashed potato and ramson was the stand out starter. So fresh and garlicy! Loved it! Moped it up with the free bread and butter they gave.
Mains:
- The Lemon Sole was beautifully cooked though very thorny! Handle with care. The sea aster that went with it I had never had but was beautifully fresh.
Dessert:
- The Treacle Tart with raw milk ice cream was lovely. Not too sweet. Not too stodgy. A light touch from the chef!
- I had wanted to try the Apple, Sorrel and Goat’s Curd. But it was not on the Lunch menu. I asked nonetheless and the server was kind enough to chat to the chef and they agreed they would make it now problem despite it being on the dinner menu. Well done chaps because this was nothing like I had ever tasted and reminded me of my childhood in the same breath. Like the apple sweets you used to suck but with a hint of cheesy curd. Outstandingly inventive.
B.
Each dish was full of tasty joy, service was warm and efficient. All very impressive for their first night back from lockdown. ⭐️
N. M.
Amazing food. Fantastic service. Every dish served had something that elevated it beyond great to become truly amazing. Probably one of the best meals I've eaten.
H. T.
Fantastic food from beginning to end which was all well presented with innovative flavours or ingredients. Service I found a bit too casual for my liking and generally had to try too hard to get someone's attention.
A. N.
First time I was blown away by food and service for a late lunxh. Second time it was on the middle of lunch rush, and some items on the menu were no longer available. A great place for food lovers to get their thrills.
T. C.
James Lowe has taken the best of London and fast forwarded to the future with a cuisine that is light, clear in taste and rich in flavors. Maybe the best eatery in the city, with a wide range of dishes that play with ingredients and offer customers a top of class experience.

I was so skeptical about Lyle's after reading the first reviews that I was really not expecting much on my first visit. Oh, was I wrong, very wrong. Far from just being a "St.John's' copycat", to me it exudes a very distinct personality although it's only been open for a few months - and one I really get along with.
Dinner is NO CHOICE- you get five courses and maybe a few extra things from the kitchen - the menu changes daily, it's on the website before you decide whether to book and they call you to confirm your dietary requirements if any. It's still no choice so don't complain ;) Whilst it's not really "nose to tail", it's still on the adventurous side - nettles, mushrooms, seaweed of various types, liver and raw fish all featured in my two dinners there (so far).
Lunch has a choice selection of small plates (on the small side, but flawless and tasty) and mains that can be shared - if you can tear yourself away, I had serious trouble with a lamb saddle so crispy and moreish I could have eaten it twice. Pan-seared monkfish liver was a highlight for me, as the dexter rib tartare. Bread and butter are made in house (after an initial period where they were sourced externally), as it is the charcuterie.
Interesting wine list with lots of mid-priced options, and some quirky-sounding "vintage" cocktails (although the Americano could be stronger).
I wrote a blog post about Lyle's- can't post the link here but it's at www(dot)intothefworld(dot)come if you care to know more
J. P.
The food was classy and we'll presented, the waiting staff were polite and solicitous. It's the speed of service that let them down. Two hours to get through a simple lunch was too long.
O. T.
Fantastic vegan tasting menu
V. A.
Very nice atmosphere and the dishes are pretty creative. Is this the type of food that changes your life? No...but its very well executed and tasty.
M. O.
A brilliant addition to the Shoreditch area. Great a la carte lunch menu where you can pick from a range of dishes, then in the evening a set price menu which shows of the kitchens superb skills and passionately sourced produce
S.
Great vibe, great food, no unnecessary frills. Superb ingredients handled with creativity and care. "Natural" wine list is fine, could be better.
C. M.
One of our fav place in London. Every thing is cooked to perfection. Flavours are sometimes bold but always very balanced and fresh. Service is casual but with class.
L. M.
Been here several times and it's one of my favourite restaurants in London and I'd recommend to anyone after great unpretentious food. Fantastic service and great wine selection.
B. S.
Love some of the dishes, and hate the rest.
G. S.
Amazing!! Took my oh for a birthday meal and it was delicious. The flavours were so perfectly balanced! Service was great too, highly recommend!
M. H.
3.5/5 extremely over salted red mullet fish dish. Bad pumpkin soup today which was over citrusy and overwhelming with butter. My dessert was standard. However the saddleback pork chop was over the top and so was the eel starter. Mixed feelings.
K. W.
I went for lunch with my friends and ended up at Lyle's - one of my friend's choice; minimalist in interior but I was positively surprised with food. We tried lamb's sweetbrads, neetle soup and chegworth salad; I gave 4 stars only because we had to wait for the food for a long time.
P. N.
Michelin star restaurant with a great tasting menu. Everything we had was also healthy and delicious. My only gripe was that the wines I had tasted a bit sour.
M. F.
Incredible place with an incredible experience with the best decor , ambience and atmosphere. The staff is highly professional and friendly, the service is prompt and punctual and hygiene is always up to standards.
M. W.
The best set menu restaurant in London for a special occasion. Exceptional cooking and service on every occasion.
X. Y.
Great service and food, reasonably prized menu. The only thing I was not so happy with, I would prefer white bread with unsalted butter
L. H.
The most incredible food, the most amazing service and a very chic, clean and modern interior. I haven't ever experienced such tastes and am wanting to go back again as soon as I can.
M. G.
Superb restaurant; casual and unassuming
W. W.
Food was ok but dessert was excellent. Love the fig ice cream. The idea of the fig dessert was brilliant. Service could have been better too. Not a lot of food for a degustation.
D. a. S. P.
Had a delicious lunch here, with interesting and well presented dishes. The staff were fantastic too, overall well worth a visit here.
L. J.
This place exceeded my expectations - the food was absolutely delicious, the staff were friendly and accommodating and they were comfortable with food allergies. Would highly recommend!!
C. T.
Great ambience, excellent service and food was spot on. Unfortunately we brought our own wine but the wine list looked pretty well paired with the food menu.
E. T.
I certainly liked their food and customer service, excellent location to my residence. The cashiers are always friendly. Will come visit again.
A. M.
Excellent service and ambience. The food was fresh, well presented and very tasty. Menu changes quite often so check on the day what's being served.

The ricotta ice cream with blackcurrant oil is supreme.

M. L.
Amazing experience at Lyle's. The food was incredibly good with fresh and seasonal products. I had the chance to try the cherry stone ice cream and Oh damn it was good! I totally recommand this place!
S. Y.
Food was alright but not amazing. Nothing really impressed us and it dulls in quality compared to the many other high quality restaurants in the neighbourhood.
J. J. S.
Delicious coffee in the mornings, with a great variety of origins and roasters.
Dinner is on a set menu and just delicious.
R. L.
This place totally deserves its reputation. Relaxed atmoshpere but serious food and crazy winelist. One of my favorite places in the world.

One of my favourite restaurants... No choice on the menu is really nice for a change. Every single dish was insane!
M. E.

Best food and experience I've had in years!
M. W.
Really nice food. It's a set menu so you don't even need to exercise that decision making muscle. Would highly recommend.
J. W.
Relaxed environment serving good quality food but ultimately overpriced for what it is (even for London!)

Good food, efficient and friendly service but is it really worth a michelin star? not sure
A. D.
Christ this place is good. Desserts out of this world and for London, everything is fairly priced.
E. K.
Delicious food and wine - the only reason this isn't 5 star is the service felt a little rushed and it would have been nice to linger the evening away with slightly longer pauses between courses.
P. R. V.
Lovely, nordic ambience combined with great cooking. Must eat!
