Reviews of Pepper & Spice Restaurant London
R. M.
This was a beautiful lunch! We seriously enjoyed the food and as always, both aunties were delightful in serving the food to happy customers. Highly, highly recommended!
H. M.
Absolutely best Jamaican food takeaway in London Period.
Everything you try here is well seasoned, cooked and served with professionalism and a 😊 smile. Give them a try you will not be disappointed. Whether you want Oxtail, Curry Mutton, Fried Fish or Soup all are top notch and good portions. Well done Ladies 🍾
F.
First time I've taken my wife for Caribbean/Jamaican takeout in London. The oxtail stew and rice was everything we wanted, except I should have got the larger size. Gravy was like giving your soul a meaty, rich collagenic massage. Proper long & slow cooking.
S. P.
I placed an order for cocktail patties, called enquired then couldn't get an answer on the phone for 2 days. Finally went down there queued for a while and managed to place the order. On collection day veg and fish patties were labelled incorrectly, so we're served wrong. Not presented in the best way. Foil container per flavour but would have paid extra to have them on platters if i was offered this option. Patties are not made on site. Food is nice here but they are missing out on a lot of business by not answering the phone!
S. M.
Every item on the menu is authentically Jamaican and amazing and thankfully nothing changed after they moved from the shop on Kingsland Road just round the corner, several years ago.The queues can get long but it's always worth the wait. Lunch or dinner from here is a must any time I'm in the area.
M. S.
My gosh!! The options, the flavours, the beautiful service from the lovely ladies! What can I say but it makes me hungry to think about this place massive blessing to dalston always has been!!
o. x.
Good service, lovely food but the let down is the food is dry before you get home, they don't use enough gravy in their food and the patties are lovely but sometimes too hot with pepper.
T. M.
Busy Caribbean restaurant. Visited at lunch time on Saturday.
Got a patty caloloo which was tasty and not too oily.
And one of the dishes on « today’s special » board
Ackee and Saltfish. First time for me to try ackee and I liked it. Perfect balance in the flavours (mild), the sauce gives moisture to the dishes. Ackee and the fish are very soft, melting in mouth.
Thanks to the people behind the counter who helped me to order !
M. I.
Just perfect! Ackee patties and just everything is so tasty.. a good quality Jamaican eatery
d. p.
I have been going to this takeaway for years now, the food is simply wicked an the lady are not bad too
R. l.
Foods great. I love my Caribbean food! Patty I got wasn't as deadly as usual which was good. Pepper too strong sometimes. Reasonably priced also. Always try to go when visiting East London!
T. G.
Always tasty and fresh, ques can be long but it's worth it. Wish they did home delivery.
T. L. S. L.
Great service and mouth watering flavours on all their dishes. I usually go for the curry goat but I've also had their jerk chicken, ox tail with rice and peas and they taste amazing! I'm very particular with my Caribbean food. This is the only place I usually come.
J. M.
Fresh jerk, fresh hot food, n nice customer service, no attitude you get from most Caribbean takeaways been back 3 times since
A. l.
Amazing. The staff are friendly, the food taste delicious and they give decent sized portions for the price. I had stew chicken, rice and peas with plantain. I will be going back there very soon. Best Caribbean food I've tasted in a long time
o. p.
Good food, friendly service, huge portions.
D. C.
Fantastic curry mutton and peas we get this every time we drive up to watch Arsenal at home
A. J.
Very pleasant staff, welcoming and helpful.
My only gripe is that the white rice was a little mushy
D. O.
Love the vegetable Display.
It makes you want to EAT... EAT.. EAT!!🤤
The food TUN UP.. what I meant is (it's DELICIOUS)
One thing need to step up on is that they need to hook up with Uber, Deliveroo etc.
Delivery is the way to go now (The new Norm?) 🚴🏼♂️🚚
D. C.
Best Jamaican food shop always a que here but thats because when something 2 good u will happily wait 4 it getting hungry just thinking about it
J.
The foodd omg it's amazing. I Got the curry mutton with coleslaw and plantain. Everything tasted good and authentic. Reminds me of when I go back home. Big portions. Always busy though but for good reason and the ladies serving are lovely
L. O.
Been visiting pepper & spice for at least 15 years if not more! Absolutely love their patties!
C. G.
Nice Caribean food at reasonable prices with Good selection 👍🏾
P. C.
Amazing jerk chicken and rice, great value for money as well!
S. r.
Best Jamaica food restaurant in hackney (Dalston) the jerk chicken rice and peas is proper tasty! Staff are lovely and friendly
P. S.
They always have a variety of delicious food that is always fresh and staff always friendly, Exquisite
b. b. w.
The food is good that's whole menu and that's that. I only do reviews on places that deserve it and this one surely does. The staff are most pleasant and they believe in the products they sell, and you can taste that in the food, start with the patties and then go for a main meal jerk chicken rice and peas with a side order of Mac& cheese, and some stew down callaloo,Washed down with some Guinness punch or tropical juice's. And then get yourself a slice of dark cake. You will not be disappointed
C. R.
Good customer service and great place for a meal
S. P.
Great food. Large portion. Warm and friendly atmosphere. Staff welcome friendly helpful and happy. Just love the atmosphere and food
C. P.
Food was lovely & the staff. Portion sizes were good. If you want rice & peas, plantains go early. Expect a queue.
M. G.
Really enjoyed the fried fish, melt in your mouth delicious.
b. s.
I love this place, well worth the visit, great prices and service with a smile
P. H.
Lovely staff, the food in general was proper. Full of flavour and large portions. If I hand any criticism, it would be that the fired chicken was over cooked and had been sitting there for some time. Aside of the we were really happy.
J. M.
this place is so great. food is delicious, really well-priced (can feed two for a tenner easily) and the service is incredibly lovely. serves are generous and there’s plenty of variety on the menu, so I keep coming back for new things. patties are so good I’ve gotta try every flavour. can’t fault it!
T. P.
Lovely authentic Jamaican food. Patties are 😍😍 and Manish water is nice.
M. B.
Difficult to park, food wasn't worth the money spent - quantity. I went on a Sunday I think some of the food was old. I bought some patties & ended up throwing them away they were dry & tasted like they were 3 days old, they also tasted a bit off. I always liked them for their patties so was very disappointed considering I haven't been there for a very long time. I gave 3 stars as I am not sure if it was bad day for them or their going down hill. Won't be back for a good while.
S.
Always always busy. Great takeaways especially on cold days. Saltfish and calaloo patties are my favourite. Also tried oxtail stews and goat curries nice too. Charming warm service great local venue.
S. H.
Amazing food and lovely people working there. Delivery service would be great I would eat here more often if it was available. Thanks Pepper and Spice!
j. f.
Great food, reasonably priced
E.
Hidden Treasure! My eyes feasting (almost crying being vegetarian) at all the food looking so tasty. Got for hubby beef patty n jerk chicken, rice & peas - leg or breast? Delicious & so was the Veg curry. Fridge got some damn good drinks. Lovely thoughtful staff appreciate she labelled the vegge stuff & safely wrapped all the food safely for travel :) Brilliant thank you so much
R. D.
I traveled all the way from West London to get a taste of Caribbean cuisine here. Soulful and delicious food filled with love. The lady who served me was especially warm and kind (I think she owns the place). Opt for anything from the baked goodies to the mouthwatering curries you won't be disappointed.
C. M.
A real neighbourhood staple.
Food is always incredibly delicious and the prices are reasonable. The shop is always bustling because of this, so expect to wait a worthwhile minute or two! Loveliest staff, can't recommend enough - the patties are the best I've ever tried.
S. F.
I loved this place since I was a child and the food is just as good as its always been, the ladies serving the food are friendly and the prices reasonable, give it a try you'll love it too
J. S.
Simply the best Caribbean healthy food around. Hot, delicious, healthy. Try out the vegetable soup or stew peas soup excellent. Tasty patties beef, saltfish, chicken, vegetable.
M. L.
If you’re yearning for homely Caribbean classics like jerk chicken, curry goat, ox tail, cow foot soup and much, much more, this is your spot.
Inside, the set-up is about as functional and no frills as it gets. From the L-shaped food counter to the faded menu boards, right down to the precarious window seats, it’s clear that Pepper and Spice put all their time, energy and love into making delicious food. And thank god they do, because when you pair that delicious food with fair prices, preposterous portions and the reassuring patter of patois coming from the kitchen, you’ve got yourself a recipe for something special.
I love this place and can’t recommend it enough. Come with cash, a massive appetite and a desire for an authentic Jamaican takeaway experience and you will not be disappointed.
S. C.
lovely service lovely food great take away
C. W.
The food was juicy and tasty 😋
Oxtail and rice
The lady serving was lovely
The wait was long, but worth it
K. M.
The pastried here are on par or perfect, the shop is small but covid friendly and clean. This is authentic carribean cuisine, at good price.
C. T.
The highlight was the amazing curry goat! The meat is so tender and the spices are just right! Rice and beans is prepared with coconut oil and it makes it so addictive! The portions are extremely generous and the prices very reasonable. Loved the atmosphere in the shop too, I have rarely seen such care being taken to prepare your order and pack everything perfectly :) I will be back!
K. L.
This place serves the best Caribbean I've ever tasted. The curry goat is out of this world and 1 of my favourites so full of flavour and they've kept it traditional. The price is very reasonable and the portion size is nice very generous. You gotta try it you won't regret it.
S.
Love this place.. Love the brown stew fish.. Great value, great staff.. Please can you do a daily curry fish with coley ;)))
G.
This is the no. 1 spot for authentic Caribbean food. No matter where I am in Hackney, I always head to this take-away. My partner dreams about this place, in fact it was his suggestion to come and order a meal and for once in his he got the thumbs up. Not only is the food delicious and well cooked but the ambience and welcoming approach from staff is excellent. I cannot speak highly enough for Pepper & Spice and I recommend if ever you are in the area to try their cuisine. 5* is not enough to rate this place m, we thoroughly enjoyed our meal on Sunday 7th Aug. Thank you Peppers & Spice
O. G.
My go to place when it comes to carrebian food. Their Oxtail and butter beans are to die for!
C.
This West Indian takeaway has been a notable place in Hackney since was a boy.with pleasant staff, authentic dinners and the best patties in London, Peppers & Spice is worth the detour if you find yourself driving through Hackney. They have put safety measures in place so get some great food and keep the culture in Hackney alive.
M. G.
Oh my goodness, these guys are fantastic, especially Diana. They did the food for a gathering we had and everyone, I mean everyone, absolutely loved the food! So tasty, very generous, we'll be coming back. Would thoroughly recommend this shop to you anyone who appreciates tasty West Indian food.
Thank you Peppers and Spice, Dalston!
J. A.
Called before hand to see if the food is fresh or do they heat in the microwave. Spoke to lovely Diana who was really friendly and explained very professionally despite being soo busy. She said just come in and you'll see. Ordered large Chicken, rice and peas, portion of plantain and good old ginger beer all for £10. It went down a treat and it was halal. Would recommend going lunch time as it's more likely to be fresh however the que may put you off but you don't have to wait long as they serve pretty quick.
S. B.
Great food especially if you want home made authentic jamaican style food. A shop with everything to offer including party size patties. This is the most talked about place for finger foods.
J. Z.
Great food!! Great prices!! Great staff!! More fish, seafood and prawn dishes please..
d. S.
Great food. Haven't eaten here in a while. Nice to see they haven't lost there touch
N. P.
Peppers & Spice is one of the original West Indian take away chains and have been in Dalston ever since I can remember, although originally located in Kingsland High Street, just north of Dalston Junction. The staff are friendly and the food is excellent (which isn't always the case. I've been to one or two West Indian places where the reception was a little frosty, which I can understand, but it is a pity, as I think it may put some people off trying the food. If that is the case, don't let that put you off here. I sincerely hope I haven't offended anyone by saying that, apologies if I have, it wasn't my intention). I particularly like the goat curry with rice and peas and their patties are second to none, but they serve a wide variety of dishes with daily specialties. I'm not fond of very hot food (a vindaloo is too much for me), but I find the food here, while spicy, not too hot, although the dishes vary in strength. The curried goat and patties have a kick, but, in my opinion, it's just right. Thoroughly recommended.
K. H.
Fantastic food, super serving for great price! Definitely going back there to try more of their amazing food. Do go there if you like to have true Jamaican dishes! Minor downside is that it's take-out only.
N. A.
I am from Leeds and west Indian food is in my blood. I knew as soon as I walked in, four wonderful women making what they make at home for the masses. I had oxtail and my wife had jerk chicken in jerk sauce. The oxtail was amazing, the heat was perfect. Jerk chicken can be dry but this was juicy and simply perfect. We also had 2 patties, beef and salt fish. Up north they seem to be shop bought no love and soul in them. These where home made pockets of delight. my wife hates salt fish but she loved the salt fish pattie. I highly recommend this place for a serious munch. PS crazy potions too!! Peace and love.
B.
I usually visit this branch to buy their meals, and the food taste good and the service is usually good....however...on my last visit last week, i was served by the owner, and i really can't believe the attitude!!!!! She was so abrupt and rude, that I started to laughd at her. I asked her..."Is this how you serve your people/customers". She looked at me as if to say...'what?', so I repeated what i said. When she realised my tone, she changed her attitude...a bit!!! I only brought the food because it was for other people & late. If this was not the case, I would of taken my money elsewhere!!! They are not the only Caribbean take away, and they/she better remember that! A bad attitude = bad business. Then she had the ordasity to say at the end of her awful service...'God bless you'. To which I replied...."May God bless you more, as I think your gonna need it". I walked into the shop with a smile and left feeling very disappointed.
S.
The best patties in town! Beautifully made. No where else do patties like peppers and spice on Balls pond road! Big up the Lovely staff👌
E. E. c. l.
Best food with best customer services/satisfaction.
Friendly and approachable staff.
Keep it up Nice ladies.
T.
I only tasted the saltfish patty but it was flavorful. I could actually taste the fish. The Guinness punch had a great balance of rum and condensed milk.
B. E.
Great food each and every time, and good customer service 👌🏽 the Guinness punch and there carrot juice is the best in north London
A. S.
One of the best Carribbean resturants in London. Peppers and Spice know how to do Carribbean food, everything is freshly prepared and always hot no matter the time you go to get served. The staff are quick to take your orders and box off food for takeaway, one of the things I appreciate is that they always wrap up the food in cling flim to ensure it doesn't spill. Lastly you know its a good restaurant when it's always busy with customers, everytime I go to grab food no matter the time it's busting with people looking to get some delicious food!
B. M.
The curry mutton with rice and peas with coleslaw side was absolutely delicious! Highly recommended!
A. J.
I heard great things about Pepper & Spice so I decided to head up there for a spot of lunch. I opted for the lunch special (advertised as £5.50), but was told that jerk chicken and rice & peas only comes as a large... so £6.50 it was. Which is quite a lot for a canteen-style takeaway, and I couldn't help feeling like they should make that clear before ordering.
Anyway, the portion size was good but the jerk was what I like to call 'white people jerk' - not really jerk at all, more like slightly spicy bbq chicken. Which is not really what it's all about is it? This is jerk chicken for people who think Reggae Reggae sauce is the be all and end all of Caribbean condiments. Newsflash: it's spicy ketchup for people too afraid to eat scotch bonnet sauce.
It wasn't bad, far from it, but it really wasn't what I was expecting. Supposedly the patties are really good, I might have to pop in and give them a second chance.
a. F.
Exquisite food and the best beef patties that money can buy. You won't be disappointed...
M. T.
This is way overdue, but here goes.
In 2011 I volunteered for a charity called Catch 22 who supported children not in education or employment. We were running an event alongside Choice FM, now known as Capital Xtra) called Slamfunk. This event brought communities together to play in a basketball tournament.
Funding was limited and we needed to provide food for our volunteers.
I approached Peppers and Spice and they kindly agreed to donate food. They went above and beyond and to this day I am still grateful. I asked one of our team to take a photo as a way of gratitude.
Life took over, I relocated countries and never found the opportunity to go back and show them the photo. I want to say thank you for all that you did, everyone loved the food and were so grateful.
A. L.
Food and service from the heart.
Had a "small" portion of the coconut and bean rice together with chicken stew and oxtail stew. And a salted fish pattie. Yum. Comfort and value and enough leftovers for brunch!
G. M.
Fantastic and delightful food, I liked the ambience this place has, and the staff members were super nice. Will definitely eat here again.
K. D. C.
Food is always great, super fast service and friendly staff. I’ve been coming for years and will continue to do so. Red pea soup is crazy good and everything else too.
R. L.
Food was excellent 👌 large portion grest value for money 10/10
A. F. n. B.
Caribbean food at its best. I used to buy from their other shop years ago in Tottenham. Very nice portions and price is good. What more can I say, go check it out.
A. D.
This is the Dalston one. Great staff, great experience. It's like party night every time. They are friendly and always full with happiness. This makes the food taste yummy. Happy people, happy food....
M. V.
Oh my lord. The curry mutton was sooo tasty and lovely friendly service too. Can't wait to come back for more!
L. R.
I've eaten from many Caribbean restaurants and I have to say that the food here is excellent and in fact the best I have tasted. It reminds me of my grandma's cooking. Even though this restaurant is far from where I live, I bypass many restaurants to get food from here, well worth it.
G. P.
Their patties are a must!! Dinners are tasty enough, as well as the soups. Service is much improved..
K. L.
I had the curry goat over rice & peas with a side corn salad for £6.50 (large). The small size is £5.50.
Big chunks of mutton, though you still have to be careful with the shards of bone in the stew. Portions are big enough for a hefty meal or two lighter meals.
The oxtail is also delicious, and I'll have to go back to try the ackee & saltfish.
The small line out the door moves quickly, and there are plenty of parks nearby to eat your food.
J.
A wide array of authentic mouth watering Carribbean dishes to tickle your taste buds, from curry goat to Manish water to cornmeal porridge.
Open till late, nice polite friendly staff, overall excellent service, would highly recomnend
A. C.
The best Caribbean restaurant ever and the price is right. Food is absolutely delicious and the ladies who work there are so quick in serving you and their attitudes are great. Best ever place!!! ;-) x
A. H.
Love this place. Staff good covid stuff in place ..plenty of food and a variety of drinks yum yum ..

#PeppersNSpice situated 5mins from Dalston Junction station is a National Treasure known all around the world for having the finest caribbean flavours in London. 👌
Weather that be their soft, succulent 🇯🇲patties, mouth watering 🇯🇲jerk chicken or their tantalising 🇯🇲curried goat. No matter if you eat meat, fish or are a vegetarian, P&S has something for all dietary needs. 👍
I would most certainly recommend anyone to visit Peppers & Spice to taste the different flavours of Authentic 🇯🇲Jamaica cuisine.
Good Customer Service & Good Quality Food = a Great Customer Experience..5/5
J. W.
I love it here. It reminds me of my mum and dad's cooking as a child. It saves me time from cooking so go in here for a special treat. Staff are lovely. It's really popular in here and people are always wanting more from here.
J. M.
One of the two best Jamaican Restaurants in Hackney
- also very tasty food
- large portion sizes
- friendly staff
Only negative is that food often sells out!
M. F.
The food was standard, I’d say 7/10. Staff are very friendly and welcoming, would visit again if I’m local.
P. G.
A very popular West Indies takeaway. This place regularly has queues out of the door and it was a long while before I considered joining it but I'm glad I did in the end. The patties are plump and tasty with a nice spice kick, the jerk chicken cooked well but my favourite is the ackee and saltfish. For some reason they wrap everything in about three layers of cling wrap, then a paper bag and then a plastic bag. Not exactly environmentally friendly...
T. G.
Oh man!!! Catering for a funeral sorted at short notice at very reasonable price and absolutely yummy!!! Dianna was a real gem sorting everything for us.
Will definitely use again!
P. E.
Traditional Jamaican food, cooked to perfection, nice staff. They take cards too. Try the snapper with rice and peas. With a large dollop of oxtail gravy.
B. V.
The que and wait, was way too long. Only had two staff members working. Shop full of customers, so not really Ideal. Food is nice. Staff are quite friendly.
S. B.
I have not visisted in 3 years....Steam bream was harder than it should have been, plain rice and coleslaw was a no no. Guys maybe it was a bad day , we all get those. Always love supporting #notalwaysperfect
g.
It was my first time here and Wow!! the staff was so nice and helpful , it will definitely make me want to go back and order more food from this wonderful establishment , and what I had was absolutely delicious!!
A. P.
Food is amazing !! The goat and patties are amazing. I come here as often as I can. Shame they don’t deliver. But not the end of the world
C. H.
Oxtail not very tasty, more bone than meat. Fried chicken too salty. Service is a bit slow, but the staff are friendly, and the shop is clean.
V. E.
The food is really nice and the staff and service is just amazing. Love coming here.
O. U.
Really nice Caribbean food joint, can get very busy at times but definitely worth the wait. For drivers be on the watch out for the parking ticket men, Parking space is very limited and expensive.
R. R.
Great customer service and lovely food, there's nothing like being served with a smile.
Excellent 🖤🙏🏾👏🏾
S. W.
Very tasty curry goat and rice n peas. The portion was more than enough the container was so full.
J. H.
Went there yesterday evening with my colleague from Whittington Hospital and oh boy they are generous with theyre portions,no wonder they have queues right outside the door, food is delicious
c. w.
One. Of the best Caribbean take aways in London. Food made with love and friendly staff without attitude.I travel from West London. It Is just so worth it💜
T. B.
Another great Jamaican hot food outlet in London. Friendly service, smiles. Great food, good people. Visit and fill ya belly!
T. S.
Tucked away on Balls Pond road is the kind of Caribbean fried chicken that makes you want to go and brutally murder the Colonel for ever making you assume that KFC was even a little bit tasty. The spicy, crunchy, crusty goodness coating the soft chicken beneath may well make you cry with joy for quite some time. That’s okay.
To read more of what Pepper & Spice has aboard go to the Twenty Something London website.
W. C.
Portion is massive. Curry goat on point, would definitely get again. Curry definitely carried some heat on it but nothing unbearable. Oxtail was good, carried a bit of sweetness and a bit of heat.
P. P.
Best Patties in London. Fav order:
Curry Goat (Only Large if you’re really hungry)
Pattie - Beef or Chicken
Dumpling &
Guinness Punch

Oi.....drop that delicious pattie.... Truly Jamaican food.... Possibly: a little to Scotch bonnet hot for my taste buds on occasions.... But a visit is needed!
D. D.
I love my oxtail and rice OMG I am at work and don't know if I will make it without nap. Thank all staff 10/10
T. G.
really delicious food, like REALLY delicious food, but spoiled somewhat by often rude service. long queues, but if you don't care about customer service then it's well worth the wait.
N. C.
Amazing authentic Caribbean food, reminds me of my family’s cooking. Doesn’t get better than that.
S. J.

B. J.
Excellent food every single time. Service is slower than I would like but it's always busy and the prices are extremely fair
T. O. (.
The service was good and the food was tasty. The queue is long going out onto the street. I suppose it's a testament to how good the food is.
E. M.
Bit of a wait at peak times but that's a good sign that the food is very good. If it ain't my dad's cooking next step peppers and spice 👍🏿
L. N. L. T.
This place isn't like every other Caribbean food place, they always have fresh food in stock, have a weekly menu so you know what to expect and when to expect it. The food is to die for!
J. T.
Beautiful food, the beef patties are just delicious with a perfect amount of spice, with friendly staff

A. C.
Great flavoursome food, friendly staff and warm atmosphere wished they did delivery!!!
A. F.
This is the only restaurant that I can confidently say I enjoy eating from. There are other similar places closer to me, but to me, this is the best.

This place is lovely u get lots of food for the money got the curry goat the first time and then today got the cow foot they both were lovely
J. B.
As others have pointed out their prices are indeed confusing (you'll pay £6.50 for a meal) but their BBQ chicken is seriously tasty. Grab that on rice & peas with Coleslaw and you're laughing.
