Reviews of Proper Burgers Leyton

Nice portion sizes, had to take some home. Rosemary chips are perfectly fried with extra rosemary flavour. Burgers are tasty and I would go back there, definitely a proper burger. Staff were lovely and attentive.

Food was good.
We (group of 4) were the only customers present at the time which made the atmosphere a little empty and awkward. Staff were super friendly and the food came out quick. Can't complain.
K. H.
Lovely food and atmosphere. Prior to the pandemic this place was packed, but happy to see they are still open for business. Meal last night was served quick and fresh. The extra attention from staff was a great touch.

My first time visiting here and I had the Mcdaddy burger, with cheesy chips the burger was nice although was lacking flavour. I'd like to go back and try another burger before I make my final decision on this place. Staff and atmosphere was great.

Still one of the best place for burgers. Nice and simple menu. Great customer service. The decor is wonderful

Enjoyed my meal here, friendly welcoming staff. Attentive but not overbearing. The meal was well prepared, cooked and presented and most of importantly of course it tasted great 🙂.
The restaurant itself was clean and warm with spacious tables and good atmospheric music playing in the background. I would eat here again for sure.

The best burgers I have had.. and Halal!! The service is polite and efficient and the place has a nice feel to it. The sides are very good and well worth it. For a true taste for enthusiasts, I recommend the classic burger - enjoy the real taste of meat... yummmm!!
T.
Got 16oz max daddy burger, which had smash Pattie vibes to it, was decent, nothing wow about it. Have to get separate sides, got cheesy chips, was just flat, nothing special about the cheese or the chips.
Overall slightly on the pricy end considering location too.
Service was good.
T.
Very nice burgers. I tried a standard beef burger and the buttermilk fried chicken burger. The beef burger was excellent and the toppings were very well balance. Generous with the cheese too - which is important for me!
The buttermilk chicken burger wasn't bad, but quite boring in comparison. I usually prefer grilled chicken burgers but they don't have this option on the menu.
The sides were underwhelming, but since the burgers are so big it didn't bother me too much.
I rated four out of five because the beef was a little too overcooked for me - but this is the restaurants choice. I think these burgers would have a whole new dimension if the beef was less cooked and juicier.

CARD (INCLUDING AMEX) AND CASH
Quality: 10/10
Quantity: 10/10 for Buttermilk burger and 7/10 for beef burgers (you just need more!)
Price: 8/10 (a bit pricey but the quality is amazing!)
Staff: 10/10 (everyone that served us was extremely friendly, welcoming, and even shared a laugh or two)
Space: 8/10 (a decent place to sit in and eat - nothing bad to say albeit the seats are slightly close together)
Wait time: 9/10 (surprisingly not a long wait! got everything within 10 minutes...and it was busy too!)
Hygiene: 10/10 (there’s a sink outside of the bathrooms where you can wash your hands!)
Proper Burgers does THE BEST chicken burger. Period. The buttermilk chicken burger is huge, and I mean HUGE, crispy, tender on the inside, and comes with a special mushroom sauce which is to die for. Also, the bun that comes with the buttermilk chicken is divine!
The beef burgers are my second favourite ever! I would rate Andy’s (beef) burgers to be the best in class anywhere but these come very very close!
Overall a great place!

Brilliant
This is one of our 3 go to places. When you walk in to the place, you notice the warm feeling and how cosy it feels inside. The staff have always been warm and welcoming and it has a wonderful family run place feel about it. All staff are attentive and the head chef is happy to accommodate any needs. There has been times when dishes have no longer been on the menu but they are happy to make it as per request. It's these little touches that make us return over and over again. I have tried pretty much all the burgers and can't decide on a favourite. The milkshakes are lovely and you must try the home made apple pie. Easily the best I've had and no other place has come close for me.
The burgers differ on size depending on what you choose, however it is always satisfying. The chef knows what he is doing and even doing things like basic seasoning of salt and pepper, shows he understand food. Other restaurants can take note from proper burgers.
They do try new dishes which shows the creative thought process of the team here, rather then serve the same stuff all day everyday.
The pricing is perfect and 2 people can eat well for £30.

Best Gourmet burger place in London fresh, clean, and good quality ingredients. Coupled with perfection when cooking. A must go place...friendly and charming staff

Ordered the 'Morris Burger', 'Proper Burger', handmade onion rings and 'Proper Chips'. Burgers were decent but I've had better. Onion rings were really greasy and stodgy. And I couldn't enjoy the 'Proper Chips' because I was trying to eat it using a spoon 🤦🏽♂️. I even asked the gentleman who served me my food for extra dips (if he won't mind) as I was a brand new customer. Clearly he wasn't paying attention as I went back to my car he gave me a bunch of dips that were almost the same. To add insult I had to go back again to get spoons (instead of forks) and serviettes.
Also their pricing is weird. For example any of their burgers is 50p more dearer when ordering at the shop, compared to when ordering through UberEats.
Anyway I shan't be going their again, however thanks for your custom. 🙂
J. N.
Well. What can I say. They named the store correctly. I had the cheesy burger and was blown away. Nicest burger joint in the surrounding area for me. My Mrs had De Vegan (not a typo) and she didn't like it. Said it was just veg in a bun, so I wouldn't go for that option as of July 2020. But for a meat, traditional proper burger. Knock yourself. I personally will be making my way through the menu. Recommended.

Their customer service and their value to customers were lovely. We last went about 2 years ago and i still couldnt forget the taste and service. I hope to have time to go soon again
S. S.
Absolutely delicious burgers! Everyone was super pleased with their meals and service was spot on. Would definitely come again! They also serve roast dinners on a Sunday which I need to try too. The “Proper Mess” (Eton Mess) was so good too!

Given that it's arguably Leyton's most renowned Halal burger joint, we were looking forward to visiting Proper Burgers.
At the conclusion of our visit, however, we were left underwhelmed by our expectations. In terms of presentation, there's definitely a charming rusticness to them, with the lopsidedly-cut buns, and especially with the knife driven through their middle.
As such, if you're in the immediate vicinity, it is, for the moment, the place to be. But it certainly isn't a place we'd necessarily travel for from afar.
Menu Recommendation
Drink - Strawberry Mojito
Starter - Buffalo BBQ Wings
Burger - Morris Burger
Halal status: HMC certified, fully halal

Oh my days had plenty of roast in my days but nothing like this PROPER BANGING
T.
I'm not really into burgers overall in the slightest, but if I ever get one it has to be from there because they are so scrumptious. It is worth your money and your time. I had a really nice time, and the staff are lovely.
T. V.
Absolutely love the burgers from this place. My partner eats Halal so it's nice to find a place so local that does epic food.
Their burger combinations are decent and should have something for everyone. Their Sunday dinners are equally as tasty. The beef quite literally falls apart in your mouth it's so tender. Definitely a must try if you love a good roast.
Haven't got around to trying their shakes yet as I've always saved myself for the huge portions of food. The proper chips loaded with pulled beef are a must have, but be prepared, the burgers do a good job of filing you up.
Personal recommendation from me would be to try the Tony Montana burger.
A. K.
One of the best burger joints in East London!
We ordered the Buffalo Chicken Wings, Cheesy Fries, Cheesy 4oz, Buttermilk Fried Chicken Burger, The Cosmo, Mango Daiquiri and the Chocolate Cake and Ice Cream.
The Cheesy Fries we're AMAZING! Freshly cut and fried chips.
The Buttermilk Fried Chicken burger was HUGE! The combination of the items and the chicken with the creamy sauce was really good! However I wouldn't recommend this if your stomach cannot handle dairy or rich creamy food!
I would definitely go back to try something else!
L. B.
Probably the best burger I've had in a while. Large chips portions too. 8/10 would defo recommend.
M. A.
Amazing, fresh ingredients which were tasty and cooked to perfection. The whole experience was very positive from customer service to the food and hospitality. Highly recommended
M. G.
Went there for the 1st time with my meat loving partner and wasn't disappointed.
The staff are lovely, friendly, helpful and very polite and courteous..
The surroundings, although
The food was exceptional. Great tasting. Looked appetizing. Good variety. It ticked all the boxes. Plus it's right on our doorstep.
Will definitely be visiting here again.
Now I've just found out the do delivery too! They've just made my day.
Great place to go with the kids, with friends, with lovers. Or order for yourself for a lazy night in front of the tv.
I've now done a Just Eat order with these guys and the service is exactly the same. Quick, reliable, excellent food delivered to you that looks and tastes magnificent.
If you have not tried this place as yet do yourself a favour and book a table or walk in there the next time you are in the neighbourhood and have time and an empty stomach. You will not be disappointed. I can guarantee.
T. I.
This place always impresses. The burgers are fantastic, the proper chips is a must try but is a bit on the spicy side so choose wisely if you cannot handle spicy food. The Strawberry Mojito is by far the best I have had in many places, better than those ones that are more posher than this. All in all, very good and enjoyable experience, even if you come with friends, as a couple or family.
S. H. R.
Out of all the burger joints that I have tried in London, this is the best! I have been twice in a week and tried two types of chicken burgers, they were both very tasty with very high quality chicken used. The portions of chips were very generous and drinks selection were a perfect compliment to the meal.
B. M.
Burgers really are the best I've had, I have been here many times!
Staff are very nice, service is great and atmosphere nice. Highly reccomend
E.
These were one of the best burgers I've ever had. The name really speaks for itself, proper. Shame we can't get them anymore, wishing good luck to the owners.
T. S.
The food is amazing here, there are no doubts about that - I've had their burgers, theie sides, their wings, their breakfasts, their starters, their mocktails, their shakes, and even their special Sunday offerings!
The only qualm I have about them is that their prices feel steep because of their no-card policy (wasn't there during the early days of the restaurant) and because they have nearly a dozen staff members usually all doubling and tripling on the same work. (It really should not take 3 people coming simultaneously to bring food to one person...)
Again, nothing beats the quality of their food.
A. A. R.
Very enjoyable experience with family. They have a nice selection of some unique menu items I haven't come across in other places. The items we ordered were the chicken buttermilk and waffle, the nacho served with beef, proper chips served with beef and a beef burger from the menu. All items were delightful and enjoyed by all the family. Recommend.
S. S.
Roast was soo reasonably priced, the chicken and beef was so tender, gravy was full of flavour, would've been nice if the potatoes were crispy but they were still delicious.
Very clean here and great staff too!
A. I.
Went there with friends. Burger patties are packed with flavour all throughout unlike other places. Chips are on point. Service and staff are extremely helpful. Fantastic atmosphere and place is really premium and clean. Will definitely go back!
C. Y. L.
Best burger joint! I just love all of their burgers but the “dirty bird” burger just had my heart❤️ it’s an off menu item btw!
W. H.
This place feels like home. Love the décor. In all honesty the first time I went the burger was better but still above average! Then they had a freak shake on the menu so made me and the missus very happy
G. G. T.
Freshly prepared food to high standard. The Best burgers and Sunday roast I've eaten.
Excellent service and atmosphere will be back soon ❤️
H.
Tony Montana burger was very different and tasted great + best onion rings I've ever had. Also, best fresh lemonade I've ever had😂 Friendly staff too.
Update: Just had the Tony Montana yesterday, tasted even better
A. R.
Ordered Chicken BLT sandwich and Smell the mustard Beef burger- the burger was really delicious and would highly recommend if your in the mood for a beefy burger - I liked the ambience and staff were friendly and tried to accommodate our requests on food prep...thank you very much 👍👍
E.
Great burgers but need a couple of decent starters on the menu. Bring back the wings...
N. A.
One of the best food place for me and very friendly staff . I will definitely go there again ad again and also recommend my friends and family. Thank you Proper Burgers very well done to you guys
a. s.
Amazing food,,,,, naga morris burger is amazing. Highly recommended
A. S.
best beef burgers ever, good quality meat and cheese melts nicely
m. a.
Very nice food, Try the proper burger with chips.
Go there for try more viety burgers.
S. T.
Having just finished an 8oz proper burger and some proper chips with pulled beef... It was so good that I decided to drop a review. Outstanding stuff guys... Delivered quickly, arrived nice and warm, and so so tasty. Definite recommendation from me. You have certainly got the right name... Keep it up
M. S.
This by far is the best Sunday roast in East London... I have been coming here for the past 3 years and it has never failed expectation once.
I. P.
Food is always lovely. Been here many times and has never been a disappointing experience. What a burger. Love this place. Everything cooked fresh.
B. K.
Truly the best burgers I’ve ever had. Smell the mustard is just perfect.
M. R.
Tony Montana. As soon as I set my eyes on this burger, my mouth salivated in a manner of desire that overwhelmed my tastebuds to a point where I could not contain my excitement. I am extremely happy to say that it did not disappoint me in any way whatsoever other than the fact that I ended up eating it far too quickly. 10/10 would definitely recommend. Thank me later..
D. S.
Hands down, the best burger spot in London!
I've had most of the burgers on their menu and I can't fault them. Truely some of the best burgers I've ever had. I highly recommend it.
R. L.
Nice food, amazing service and good floor layout although a little tight.
S. P.
Cannot fault the food - we like and enjoy it and have ordered from this restaurant on few occasions. However, for past month and half we haven’t been able to order via the Apps (UBER EATS or Just Eat). Tried calling each time and simply no one answers the phone. Tried placing the order today, added the items to the basket and right when I was ready to hit pay it won’t let me as one or more items were no longer available but it didn’t say what was unavailable. Tried calling again and no reply. It is one of my fav restaurants but disappointed that you simply cannot and I won’t bother trying anymore.
A. R.
I've been here a thousand times and not once has it been less than perfect. Love everything from the staff to the packaging! Can't fault them. The buttermilk fried chicken burger and proper chips are my favourite!!
J. I.
It was a good burger. They're proper fries however was a bit too greasy and put me off. Always seems to be a hit or miss with the proper fries. The shop was fairly busy and packed as expected of a Friday night. However good spacing between tables and lovely customer service.

Delicious Quality Gourmet Burgers. One Of My Personal Faves
m. f.
So was in the area and read this place had good reviews so thought let's try it out. Have to say the beef burgers were amazing, would not change a thing about them. Chips were a huge let down and awfully pricy, better off getting chips elsewhere or don't get at all but the burgers are a must and will most definitely come back again
A.
Best burgers around imho. They only take cash.
J. I.
Never fails to provide amazing food.
Got both the chicken and beef Sunday roast.
S. S.
Just ordered from Uber Eats and have to say we were incredibly impressed with flavour and overall quality! Absolutely delicious burgers, cooked perfectly, and the sides were also spot on (we had wings, onion rings and truffle fries). Well done and thank you Proper Burgers for an excellent dinner!
A. E.
Very tasty burgers. proper fries was excellent, the brisket was super tender and flavourful. Not only the best halal burgers I’ve tried so far in London, but also one of the best burgers—halal or otherwise.
S.
Don't accept card which is disappointing but Food however was tasty. Best burger in east London. Service was good.
H.
Ive been to this place on 5 occasions, each time has been amazing apart from the last time I went which was AWFUL!
I want my review to be fair and to not sound like I am being overly critical.
I also dont normally leave reviews but I felt as though the owners of this place need to really to step up their game.
I would be extremely embarrassed to have brought a friend here on this occasion, I would have felt even more embarrassed if I had recommended the place to somebody and not only that but other family members of mine have criticised Proper Burger and I have defended it all the way! but... now I know what they are talking about...
So I had been to an exhibition that weekend at the NEC in Birmingham, drove back to london on the Sunday and did not eat ANYTHING all day except to look forward to munching at Proper Burger with the misses (who also loves the place, well loved the place).
Arrived to Proper, ordered the tony montana, whatever my misses ordered which I cant remember, the proper fries, oreo milkshake (which is stupidly big but looks amazing) and a strawberry daiquiri thing or mojito.
The burgers were terrible, both of them and the proper fries came after the burgers arrived. I am not talking 2 or 3 minutes a good 5 minutes which was strange. They should have come with the burgers or before being an appetiser. I normally love the proper fries with the meat and everything on their but they just tasted bland and not tasty at all.
The milkshake I got was just milk, I swear to you I left 3/4 of the milkshake it was that bad, finding a waiter to complain was a mission and there all foreign anyway so its hard to communicate.
My wifes drink only filled half of the glass they gave and that came a good 5 minutes after my milkhshake which came 5 minutes after the fries... the drinks should have been the first things on the table!!! I genuinely thought they forgot about my wifes drink it took that long to come out after the whole thing.
So were eating and not enjoying the meal, its not cheap, staff look so de-motivated.
My burger had gone into a mush and half of it fell out, so I asked the waiter to get me another 'plain bun' which i though was pretty self explanatory, which took 15 minutes to come! NOT ONLY THAT he brought me a plain beef patty burger!!! when all i wanted was a burger bun to put all bits of burger which fell out of my original burger bun... I then had enough and took 2 bites of this bun he brought and got the bill and left.
they even said would you like to takeaway your milkshake and left it because it was terrible. I didnt bother explaining because I didnt want to make a scene and not only that but they didnt seem to care so whats the point... I was just so upset because I had looked forward to eating there after travelling from Birmingham too and being at an exhibition... never ate anything too and then was soooo dissapponted.
I tried to be as patient as possible and give the benefit of the doubt, and being muslim we make an excuse on behalf of another muslim but paying £20 a head is not cheap, living in london is hard as it is and being charged these prices. The thing is though EVERYTHING was bad... and thats not an exaggeration... If management and the owners would like to speak to me in person then please reply to this message... I really like the place and have only spoken good up until this point... but if they do not get their act together you will lose a lot of customers.
And a lot of people I know, friends and family have had similar experiences which is a shame because when they told me I was honestly arguing back with them thinking they are just lying or exaggerating but I honestly had the worst experience ever there...
I was sat at Table 1 (i think table1, table closest to the kitchen), Sunday 4th Feb 2018, roughly between 4:30pm 5:30pm check your cameras. It was pretty quiet too when we arrived which was more frustrating to why the food and drinks arrived so late etc. I had a black over coat on, white shirt and trousers, beard, wife wore a hijab. see for yourself.
S. T.
Good service. Burgers are lovely, chips portions are generous. Give nice touches like free bread at the start and sweets at the end.
However this place is way overpriced. Also, they have messed around with the milkshake menu flavours over the past few months - made all these fancy ones which aren’t nice and got rid of the classic flavours (chocolate, banana, strawberry, vanilla).
K. T.
Lovely food, drinks and service. Will definitely come back 😊
I. H.
Absolutely amazing food!!! The proper chips are a must buy!!!
T. K.
Casual place to grab some burgers.
Decor is unique and pretty.
We went on a Sunday afternoon and it was pretty much empty. Check that the meat is halal.
I ordered the Tory Montana burger which was very tasty as well as a bit on the spicy side. Their drinks are pricey but come in very big glasses.
A. B.
The whole time we were eating we just kept on mentioning the word proper! This place is very chilled out clean and good value for money. It was my sons birthday and they even gave a piece of complimentary cake and ice cream which was delicious. Definitely will be coming back again. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
L. M.
I loved the food here. Cannot fault the food.
However, I felt extremely uncomfortable as the head chef, Asian bald guy, keeps howling at his two Cypriot staff members! Genuinely felt so bad for workers that were rushed off their feet and working so hard. Left me with an uncomfortable feeling.
I would like to return but honestly, I hate to see staff being mistreated as it genuinely angers me. Treat them as humans and not animals.
M. A.
You must order the 'Proper' Burger when you visit. Such a flavoursome burger. I made sure to savour every bite and will have you craving more and more. The sides are very much on the pricey side, so do hope the restaurant does consider reducing the prices. 8 naga wings for £6. Doesn't sound like value but the burgers are delightful and make it worth coming back for!
R. H.
Not sure what happened to the place we loved but the last couple of times the kids buttermilk chicken burger has gone from being a decent sized, great value for money the kids love to being nearly less than a third the size of chicken. To the point my 7 year old looked at his burger and said “where’s the chicken?”
I feel somewhat ripped off.
UPDATE: we ordered a number of meals today, kids and adult and all buttermilk burgers were great and healthy sizes. Thoroughly enjoyed and back up to 5 stars. Minor complaint , I requested no mayo on one of the burgers due to child’s allergies but this was not done. Otherwise ,thank you.
F. C.
You can always tell a good place by how busy it is and there was a queue to get into this burger place.
Granted it didn’t disappoint. The burgers were delicious, meat was lovely. My partner got a salad which also looked delicious. All for great value too. Highly recommended.
S. P.
I like proper burgers. Burgers are nice, chips are nice too. I just wish the oil and bread they give at the beginning didn't taste so bad. Taste like engine oil with expired bread. Also I wish they took card machines. Feels like I'm in a village having to go cash point in the cold.
i. a.
Nice and clean inside. Side order portions are for 2 persons. Burgers are always nice and flavoursome. Never had a bad burger here. Staff are really nice and friendly. Always willing to have a chat.
D. W.
omg the chicken burger was absolutely amazing i have never haf anything like it
N. A.
Real Black Angus meat! Cooked from fresh (not frozen) to perfection! The burger doesn't need much sauce, the flavour of the meat is amazing! I would highly recommend it, and definitely come back!
Y.
Amazing atmosphere and customer service! Clean restaurant with clean toilets. (I was in love with the decor!) However, I can’t believe a 4oz burger is even on the menu. It’s TINY. Little to no meat inside the burger so will definitely opt for the 8oz next time. Overall really enjoyed the experience and will be returning!
M. G.
Went there with a few of my friends. Only waited a few minutes before someone came and took our order. The staff were polite and friendly, were always ready to help. We didn't wait long for the food, which was amazing. I love Gourmet Burger Diners and this is definitely up there. Service, Food, Prices, Decor, everything was good. Would definitely go back.
N. S.
Absolutely AMAZING place....
the food, especially BUTTER FRIED CHICKEN BURGER is the most delicious I have ever tasted. Not sure how they make their mushroom sauce, but it is spot on and compliments the burger perfectly.
Have been there twice with my family now, the staff are so polite and friendly which I think makes the experience that much better...they kept the shop open for us after closing time (I thought they closed at 11!) and even put a screen up for me so I could put my veil up and eat comfortably.
They also have a really good kids menu, with the butterfried option for kids available along with fries and milkshake. The sizes are also the best I have ever seen on a kids menu, generous and not tiny...my 10, 12 and even 14 year old could have a kids meal and feel like they've had a good burger meal.
definitely be back...and recommend to everyone! Well done Proper Burgers...please keep the good work up!
S. S. K. V.
Warm and cosy atmosphere, Turkish restaurant I believe it is. lovely Mac Daddy burger, had a coconut milkshake and a Montana burger 4oz was superb and very much good value. better value that you get the milkshake looking much bigger in a glass than it is when delivered via just eat app. xxx 5 stars. Good to visit with family or love ones if you're looking for something to eat. but waiting for the food is a wait time.
love the confectionery mints at the end.
K. J.
One of my favourite places to grab a burger from. Have visited this restaurant on many occasions and each time they have not let me down with their service and the quality of the food they serve. Staff have always been friendly and able to seat us quickly, even when the restaurant looks busy, and food is delivered in a quick manner. Have tried several different burger and I love them all. Cannot wait to pop back again for another burger soon!
m. A.
Very good burgers, I had the proper burger with a side of sweet potato fries which was delicious, the only downside was that we had to wait for the food longer than expected. The service was also very good and the owner offered us a free meal because off the delay. We decided to pay anyways because the food was really tasty.
R. K.
At first i thought that this might be a standard takeaway style burger however, i was quickly surprised when the food arrived.
Ordered a Triple Burger, butterfly chicken burger, 12 Buffalo Wings and Chip’s. Everything was delightful, out of all the burger places we have been to is up there at the top.
Decent seating inside for small family's, service was great food was received quickly. Will be going back with the family soon.
Thank you
A. B.
I thoroughly loved the burger and rosemary seasoned fries meal I had at this fine establishment. Would certainly visit again if I am ever in that part of London and want a spot for a well proportioned meal that you may struggle to finish. 😁👌🏾
m. k.
The proper Chips, starters were great. Chicken burger was nice! Beef burger wasn't too bad, but had better, needs some seasoning, maybe just some more salt, black pepper & garlic powder. Waiting ain't too bad. Staff are also very friendly and very helpful. The only let down is it's cash only as they don't accept card, so we had to walk down to withdraw cash, although it was only a 2 minute walk, but inconvenient with a large group or even small in that case. Nice decor too. Would recommend this place.
f. m.
This is a proper great burger!!! Soo tasty and juicy!!
S. K.
Lovely atmosphere, cheap and cheerful, £9.95 for a burger side and drink. Nice place to de-stress. Benji ( I think that was her name ) lovely waitress, offered water as we sat down. Food was tasty too. Would I go again, yep indeed.
S. J.
It's there in the name....if you want a proper burger, this is the place to go. Perfectly seasoned and cooked. They also do amazing chicken wings. Would highly recommend.
U. “. -.
Place was fantastic. From the moment you enter the restaurant you get a nice chic vibe from around the place. Very unique setting with cassettes stuck on one side of the wall. Greeting by waiter was fantastic. Service was immaculate with water with lemon and peppermint provided. They further adapted to our need by bringing two tables together. Food came quick with waiter allowing myself to make changes to the burger. Burger was full of flavour and had all the right things for a gourmet burger. Fantastic experience
B. N.
Good food, the burgers are well cooked and not over done. Ingredients all feel fresh, the chili sauce that comes with burgers/chips is the right amount of heat.
Best of all are the staff, feels like a family run place (not sure if is). First time in the home made chocolate cake was recommended, take that recommendation as well.
Enjoy.
H. K.
Great service! Food was really good huge portions for the price will be back for more👌🏻
C. D.
Funny enough, I have never had a burger here and have now stopped eating meat so I may never taste the Proper Burgers.
I have, however had their plain chips, cheesy chips and then their Rosemary fries which turned out to be my favourite. Today I had the opportunity to sample an oreo milk shake which I never would have thought I would enjoy.. it was actually really nice.
The service I have had has always been polite and very welcoming. I have always been treated as if I eat there on a regular basis. I am in love with the cassette wall. Made me wish I had sell my old cassettes so I could do something along the same lines.
Anyhow, back to the review. It's a lovely place with a lovely team and the toilets are clean 👍😊
I. K.
Quite amazing restaurant, totally hygienic. And Food is absolutely delicious. Great staff very hospitable and polite. Has delivery services as well.
A. R.
good customer service and they have the best best burger in town. I have never had a better halal burger in UK before. I had the cheesy and the mac daddy. Both were amazing. Hope this place does well and they can keep up this quality.
A. M.
Great juicy burgers, love the chips, great friendly service, great prices compared to other gourmet places. Very consistent quality, been eating here for years. My go to gourmet burger joint.
D. H. B.
Had the roast it was lovely and very hearty. Only issue was that when we got there they advised that to have the roast you have to pre-book. Was not aware of this but did try to phone prior to travel out of habit and they didn't pick up the phone. We travelled nearly 2 hours and they could only accommodate one person for the roast

Food was standard. I had the Tony Montana a few times. I was not happy with the rack ribs they did not taste nice. Waiter was constantly watching us and cleaning up after us at every moment!!!
I have to say that once I tried delivery it was packed very nicely and the burger was quite hot still. I suppose its OK. Typical gourmet burger prices.
M. M.
Tried so many burger places during lockdown but this is one of the few burger places, where everything was so good and consistent. The morris burger being my fav. Highly recommended.
Z. A.
Looks like I found another regular restuarant to go to. Excellent food and atmosphere. The owner of the restuarant made us feel welcome and was a very good host. We had the barbecue wings which were really good. The sunday roast was excellent. It's a shame I didn't take any photos. Can't wait to try the rest of the menu.
Only got 4 star as they accept cash only and not cards, in this day and age this is totally unacceptable.
U. M.
Love this place! Absolutely delicious burgers. Love the proper fries. Great service! The atmosphere is amazing and the wall made of cassettes is a really unique touch. Can't stress enough how great the food is!
J. W.
(update: first year was awesome, but now each time we go we feel a little that the burgers are being mixed with other ingredients to stretch the mince out also now only accept cash) ....our first review:While not the best burger in London, it is definitely the best burger in the whole East End now and the owner is very friendly. A very nice atmosphere though a couple of the tables are a bit wobbly and feel a bit unsafe.
A. K.
Nice clean place very child friendly. Approx £20 per head for a shared starter one mains and side each and a drink. I got a brisket which tasted too salty and too beefy. Other half got the butterfly chicken which was a huge piece of nice chicken but the sauce was too much. Chips portion are big so worth sharing and are expensive for just under £4!
R. C.
A friend took me here after raving about this place. My god was it worth it! Their burger selection is so immense I was struggling to choose a burger. I went with the cheesey burger with mature cheddar and two 8oz patties. The bun was soft and creamy and the patty very filling and soft. The fried onions were the icing on the cake. We went for the proper fries which come with cheese and pulled beef and they were so moreish. The service was attentive our waitress was lovely! I will definitely be back to try some of their other amazing sounding burgers!
UPDATE: Came here again within 2 days! Food was absolutely brilliant once again. The rosemary chips are hand made and have a satisfying crispiness to them. Went for the proper burger this time and it was bang on. I was really impressed with their sunday specials too which featured roast chicken and pulled beef brisket with all the bits you would expect woth a roast. I also noticed the Dalston cola which I must try next time as well as their fresh desserts. Can't wait to come back!
D. D.
I am an American living in leyton and I am so happy to have proper burgers in my neighbourhood...delicious stuff that makes me feel like home. Keep up the good work and I hope to eat in store soon.
J. F.
My favs!!!! Such a shame they're not open everyday.. I think it's pandemic affecting them.. :( but honestly... never had better burgers. And fries... omg.
A. B.
One of the best burger restaurants in East London. Very tasty burgers. Fantastic selection of soft drinks. I would recommend the Dalston Cola and also the coconut cocktail. Decor is fantastic and quite unique. Staff are friendly and helpful. Highly recommended.
C. F.
This is nothing like any burger shop that Lea Bridge Road has previously known. And that's good. It isn't a fast food take-away, but you can take the food away. It isn't lit by strip lighting, or furnished with greasy tables and plastic bucket seats smeared in ketchup, but instead is nicely lit, really comfortable, and a pleasant place to eat in. And the food is delicious. Granted, the burgers aren't 99p each. But you get a big burger for your money, the portions are generous, and the food is delicious. The milkshakes are pretty good as well. I'd go again.
L.
Just had an AMAZING burger from Proper Burgers. I’ve had a lot of burgers in my time - and I’ve never posted about one. I’m ashamed to say I’ve lived very close to this place for over two years and can’t believe this is my first. Highly recommend.
N. R.
We visited Proper Burgers for the first time on Saturday 4 March. From the outset, the staff were friendly and attentive, although I did notice they were a little bit apprehensive but having read the reviews, I can understand why. They've either had rave reviews or really disappointing ones. So they were probably wondering what we would make of it. I found the layout of the restaurant very appealing; it's open and spacious, and the facilities are very good. I read a review where someone said the food processor / blender was a bit loud but the way I see it, at least you know the food they're making is from scratch. I liked that the waiter seated us quickly and gave colouring books and pencils to entertain our 4 year old son.
I had the Tony Montana burger- beef pattie, monterey jack, bacon, jalapenos, grilled peppers, mushrooms and chipotle mayo, lettuce and tomato in a brioche bun. Husband had the Brisket 4 burger - beef pattie, baby gem lettuce, gherkins, tomato, mushrooms and beef brisket and potato crisps in brioche bun served with proper slaw on the side. I thought mine was tasty - the meat was well-seasoned, the various components were good. Husband didn't enjoy his - he thought the combinations didn't work - the brisket was dry. He thought perhaps he would have done better to go with the short-rib. The slaw on the side was average, not bad, but nothing special. I enjoyed the Proper Chips, which were chips, with jalapenos, cheese, pulled beef. We ordered the beef burger for our son, which he didn't eat so we had it to go. Husband had it later in the evening and he said it was actually nicer than the Brisket 4 burger he had had.
Our meal came to £40. I don't think this price matched the quality of the food. But what I thought was excellent was the service. Our son spilled some milkshake and the waitress, Aisha, was very nice; she quickly came over and helped clean him up. I think, also, we visited at just before 6, so they were not busy, but still, we appreciated the staff's attentiveness. I would visit again because I would like to try the rest of the menu but I would probably avoid eating here after 6.30pm; I can imagine it gets very busy. I wish Proper Burgers well and hope they will be around for some time yet; I'd say just tweak the prices a little bit.
H.
Great service. Average beef patties with no taste and too much fat along with a large standard tomato and basic lettuce makes for a average burger at premium price. Small chicken wings at £0.99p each.
T. A.
I have been to the restaurant to eat in and ordered takeaway quite a few times, the food is always excellent and I cannot complain about quality. However I feel that they have become quite popular (which is a good thing), and sometimes I've been told the wait is over an hour for takeaway, or the phone is not answered at all. And on more then one occasion I've gone to the restaurant to find it closed for some reason or other. There may be a need for the owners to transition forwards from this successful family business before customers seek alternatives.
S.
I wish they were open at more times, because the food, interior, service is all great. I love the nachos which is a great dish if you can’t spend too much, because everything else is pretty expensive and prices have increased a lot since I first went. Also great Sunday roast and vegetarian options and I love that they are HMC!
A.
Great food particularly the mushroom sauce that goes with their chicken burger, the proper chips are definitely recommended, only negative is that the place is pricey
M. I. h.
This is definitely my go to place on a Sunday. The best Sunday lunch out there. Proper home cooked food and very reasonable prices. Highly recommended. They have a great menu not just any old burger joint.
F. Q.
Fantastic! One of the best burger joints in London.
M. B.
Proper Burgers is one of the best places in Waltham Forest to eat. Period. I've bought lunchtime specials three times and today received the food takeaway. The food is on a completely different level from the usual £1 chicken fair you get on Lea Bridge road.
The decor is really cool as one wall is completely lined with audio cassettes (remember those??).
It's not cheap - but you get superb quality for what you pay. We had the Runaway burger which was very well cooked and tasty.
However, I recommend the sweet and spicy chicken! They are deliciously moorish. The sauce is amazing and they disappeared in seconds in my house. We asked for extra of this sauce in our delivery note and the restaurant were sweet enough to give us some.
The takeaway service via Just Eat is great too and the delivery person was cheery and polite.
S. A.
My god, where do I begin. Best burgers in town if not all over UK! Staff are the best I’ve ever seen very friendly and caring. Head chef took the time out to speak to me whilst the whole restaurant was packed. Very impressed with the service and how long everything came to us. Mashallah very beautiful food and best of all it was HALAL!
Z. A.
i never usually write reviews but this place truely deserves the time and effort. the best burger place i have ever been. the quality of the meat was so pure you can taste the succulent beef. tasted nearly everything on the menu and everything was 10/10. a must try. beautiful decor with a retro feel but so cosey. open plan kitchen. the drinks are so unique and delicious. the pulled beef was mesmerising. cant wait to go back!
N. B.
Wonderful Place to be, so much so that I have been here on 3 different occasions and they never fail to impress :) Their food is wonderful and cooked perfectly.
As the name suggested, they do PROPER BURGERS that are filling and not priced fairly. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to any burger lover
L. H.
The Sunday Beef Roast was the best dish I’ve had. Must try!!! Chicken Roast was average.
Yorkshire puds were average and I would say Aunt Bessie’s are better.
Vegetables were good and the potatoes could have been more crisper.
The Mojito was refreshing and tasty while the Proper Blue was okay I guess.
O. S.
Good hearty food, very good portion sizes and amazing taste. You can tell that they go to the trouble to source and use fresh ingredients. The place is spotless and has a nice retro vibe to it. Very friendly and courteous staff who went the extra mile to make sure everything was fine. Already planning my next visit to explore other interesting things on the menu. Definitely recommended.
H. B.
The best burger joint by far 😍
B. S.
Not the best burger i had. Very dim restaurant didnt seem to have a friendly atmos in general.. as i had a bite in the burger i can smell and taste the ground beef as if it is raw or has been sitting for a while. Had to force my self to finish it since it was a hefty £40 for burger and chips for two
a. t.
As a foodie family, we've tried many places to eat and this has to rank as one of the best. Staff were very welcoming and helpful, food was fresh and delicious...from the brisket to the Sunday roast to the deserts and drinks. Will be visiting on a regular basis :)
K. N.
The burgers were really good but they're not doing mocktails at the moment. The lady serving was very friendly and welcoming.
A. V. B.
My first night in London I had the juiciest best flavored burger. The chips and a local brew was a great combination.
I. K.
Amazing burgers. Reasonable prices. Great customer service here especially having come here with 2 kids. Always love seeing managers on the front line making sure everything is ok. We'll definitely be back
S. A.
The best burger place in London
L. H.
Delicious burgers, the quality is top notch with juicy and tasty burgers, the fries are well done aswell, crunchy and just the perfect consistency, and the presentation blew me away
T.
Nice atmosphere, good service, good burgers, generous portions of chips so consider ordering just one for two people if you want want them just to be a side dish for burgers. Not expensive. Will definitely be back.
M. A.
When they first started out burgers were the best i've had, the buttermilk chicken with the mushroom sauce especially. However, recently a few times they've been very stingy with the mushroom sauce which is now runny watery and mushrooms are chopped small with barely any mushroom in it, once it only had one mushroom in the sauce. Please take advice on board and make the mushroom sauce like it used to be its what made the burger. From a fairly frequent customer, now I don't visit because there's no point if they mess up the mushroom sauce.
R. S.
I rarely leave reviews for eating out, but wanted to leave one for Proper Burgers on Lea Bridge Road. An unexpected top notch burger joint in this location. Thoroughly recommend it and will be returning for more delicious food or will order some in! Fresh ingredients, homemade burgers, generous portions, creative dishes and of course good service. See you again :).
S. L.
The best hamburger place in London!!!!! High recommended!!
I. R.
A proper burger at a reasonable price. Good selection and Friendly staff.
J. A.
Expectations delivered and beyond! Very welcoming environment and friendly customer service. Food quality I found to be amazing, and size of portions very generous for a humble price.
Sunday Roast (beef) highly recommended!
N. J. L.
Buttermilk Fried Chicken! OMG it is unique and Delicious. Pulled Beef Nachos 👌Wings BBQ👍 Overall this palace is a proper for eat with family or friends. Amazing Service and so clean even their toilet is perfect clean. I been lots of Burger 🍔 Place but first i found a five star ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ i mean from service, food quality, clean etc. I will highly recommendation this restaurant. Forgot to mention kinderbueno milkshake was ☝️
M. D.
The food was very good .Best burger in Walthamstow but on our second visit the customer was 3 over 5 but on our first time there, an old lady was there n she was very friendly n given good customer services asking us if we need anything. She was very nice.
S.
Good flavours, good range of products, good portion sizes (including for kids, which is where many other businesses are overpriced for small portion sizes), nice venue for purposes of both family and friends.
F. M.
Thank you Proper Burgers for excellent service. We pre-booked a large table for my daughters 9th birthday, turned up with 10 loud 9 year olds. We were allocated a large table at the rear of the restaurant. All diners were treated exceptionally well, food was better than expected. Kids all had kids meals which they were very happy with.
My only criticism would be that less salt should be used, I drank gallons of water afterwards.
S. A.
Great burgers. Great customer service and accommodating. Made a space for me to pray too. Parking is alright outside of restriction times. They've changed to cash only and the cash points are a little bit of a walk, which is annoying.
M. H.
A night out with my cousin, flickering throight the list of where to eat. We drove past a few historicaly excellent eateries such as Fatboy's, Zu's etc. He mentioned Proper Burgers are from Proper roots, so lets try it!
We approached Proper Burgers after parkings hours, we parked on their doorstep which was fantastic.
The decor dec well thought out, it's was rustics and organic which matched the theme of the food.
The food was great.... the sides came in huge portions, along with fresh and organic. Fantastic!
But the outrageous action of selling a 70p can drink for £3 is outrageous. Yes I am aware it is a restaurant! But they can double their profit at £1.40 or tripe the prprof at £2.10. But almost multiplying the price by 5, is simply outrageous and disgusting.
The profit will remain the same, a customer similar to me will by 2 or 3 drinks. Think out of the box, on how to meet the needs your customers.
For this reason I will never return. A customer lost! Greed at its finest!
M. P.
Went there with a group of 12 for Iftar (open fast) and they looked after us well. Service is good and beef burgers on point (quality of beef and flavours) and also their buttermilk fried chicken burger was amazing however they don't serve it all the time.
A. K.
Staff truly delightful - their smiles never faltered. Food was scrumptious too and really good value - thank you! :)
F. 9.
Be careful, you go there once you wont stop going! Fresh well cooked food. Highly recommend the burgers, very generous portions
Are u actually closed on Mondays?😭
A. C.
A rare gem that shines out brightly near the Bakers Arms. Exquisite and retro decor aplenty for the modernistas. Very child friendly. However the big hit is the food. This is now my number one burger bar.
M. S.
This is one of the best and finest budget places in East London. It's also halal which means the meat is organically sourced and always fresh. Great for anyone visiting walthamstow. Love smoothies too.
O. L.
Juiciest burger I’ve ever had. Too delicious. Would 100% recommend!
A. M.
A funky feature wall that may not make sense to the younger generation immediately due to the use of audio cassettes. Lots of other funky things like a typewriter on show too. The food (all HMC certified halal) is excellent with very generous portion sizes. The staff is very friendly and there is enough room for a small group to be able to show up and grab a table.
A. M.
Let’s make one thing clear. I travel up, down the country for work, tried many burger joints and nothing comes close to these guys!
Tasty and filling!
R. L.
Very nice decoration, and the burger was fantastic, the waiter was not experienced but it was only his second day and thay only have a few desserts that are on the menu not all of them. Overall i will be returning for another burger really soon.
A. U.
Ordered the cowabunga burger, it was pretty big and tasted very good, very lean meat pattie, lean good quality sausages, and the pulled beef was excellent. Best halal burger in London I've had hands down. And its HMC too!
t.
Tried yesterday and have to say probably the best burgers iv ever tired. Very friendly service and even have a prayer area. Halal to!
T. K.
Seriously good...and ofcourse...proper...burgers!! I thoroughly enjoyed the Fatboy rib burger, rib was tender and juicy...the 4oz patty a perfect medium to well done, not at all dry, all went together so well.with the creamy horseradish, i will be back for more!
M. S.
Absolutely enjoyed the Morris Burger with the Rosemary Flavour Infused and Italian Hard Cheese Chips and a Salted Caramel Shake to go with it. My husband equally enjoyed his Tony Montana Burger and Cheesy Chips. His Mango Daiquiri was ok, slightly more on the side of Mango Sorbet as a drink. 4 Stars only because they don’t take Card Payment. He had to walk quite a bit to get to a Cash Machine in this freezing cold weather in Feb. Someone wasn’t very happy lol. So take plenty of cash with you. Retro decor, not the cosiest of places to eat in but definitely worth trying for the delicious burgers. Lives up to it’s name ;).
A. P.
Burgers tasted good, but a bit big for my liking... Also the butter milk chicken sandwich was covered in too much sauce. Reasonable pricing, would be happy to give it another go
R. R.
Fantastic flavoursome food 10/10
T. H.
Photos speak for themselves
M. S.
Burgers are average - they don't seem to understand medium/ medium-rare, everything comes out pretty much well done. Awesome milkshakes though. Very reasonable.
F.
Best HMC certified burgers in town
A. Q.
Most of the times it is closed ,might aswell close permanently.
N. L.
Buttermilk Fried Chicken and pulled Beef Nachos are a must try. All the other varieties are good and different. Good service and a very clean and tidy place.
V. A.
We were avoiding this place because it looked to us like a wannabe burger place but, oh god we were wrong. The meat, buns, cheese and fries are of excellent quality. Better than most of these fancy chains that you cannot find around here.
P. P.
Loved their burger and drinks. It was the best burger I have tried. It was simply amazing. If you are a fan of burgers, man! this is the brand you must try and the best part is It's HALAL.
W. K.
Probably the best burger joint in town! The milkshakes are amazing & the brisket nachos are a must!!! Been visiting for a few years and the quality is always top notch!
J. C.
Me and my wife went there for meal we ordered burger the meal was excellent taste the manger was very polite

Love this!
Expensive but quality of burger it’s worth recommending, you will enjoy the fries are fresh cooked mouthing burger itself is so tasty eat you want to eat more.
G. J.
Food is very nice BUT service is the worst. Very slow and not paying attention. If you like food and are happy to wait ages, then give it a go. Also, don't forget to bring cash... no cards accepted!
A. S. A.
Great food and Service!
M. W.
East London hidden gem. Buttermilk chicken burger is very oversized and messy but tastes like no other. Proper chips are in a league of their own 🖒
L. D.
Wow Sunday lunch no words can explain how I feel about this place HALAL food wow it was wicked. The food was 100% brilliant not just the food my boys had a milkshake again WOW and OMG I'm surprised that they manage to finish it.
N. U.
Amazing food, amazing service. Can't wait to go back 😍
A. R.
The burgers were awesome and the service was fantastic, really friendly. Only downside was they're cash only and slightly overpriced, in particular for their sides.
A. G.
I had the chicken burger and what a burger! Best I've ever had, no questions about it.
It was around £5, big juicy burger, fries, drink. Delicious meal, will visit again.
d. s.
Brilliant burgers, superb fries, great onion rings and a Mojito to die for, although it lacked rum lol :-)
The best burger experiences I have had for years :-)
S.
Great food and great service. The place looks fantastic and has a lovely laid back atmosphere. We were served by Matt who was amazing. Thank you. Sam.
I. O.
Good sheesha, always busy as result so be prepared to wait.
Because it is popular, owners obviosuly try to squeeze in as any people as possible. Does feel like a chicken coup sometimes.
E. A.
The place is very inviting from outside
The interior is super cool - a cassette wall is TOP!!!
Then the food is very well served abd cooked . The owener spent a bit of time with us chatting about!
Defo , we will call it again!
N. H.
Really good burgers. Must visit
f. s.
That place is definitely got something about it, very nice decor. But the burgers where average, the buns where nothing great, and very over priced. 2.50 for a can of coke in Leyton come on that's a 'Proper' rip off. However was service good.
M. J.
Best burger joint in east london, excellent service, lovely environment, nice staff. Food is always 100%
A. S.
Good food and drinks but come on being cash only and making me walk 1000 metres to the nearest cash point takes the mic in this day and age of contactless. Plus it was freezing outside.
R. A.
This in a edit from 3rd visit.Food was proper good, as usual.Nice chose of bugers. Great quality buns. Service is very good. Very happy overall.
S. B.
Really nice burgers best customer service
I think food is little pricey but really good though
M. H.

R. C. R. S.
Really nice burger house, clean and well presented restaurant, friendly staff on point with good food, what more could you ask for, will definitely return
J. 2.
The food was great but not worth a 45minute wait, And it was moderately busy, so you would expect them to cope. Imagine how late their food would be if they were at max capacity.
I. L.
Really nice buffalo wings,£9 for 12, cracking burgers for around £10 and reasonable prices for everything else. Clean and funky place to eat.
S. I.
Been coming here a fair few times, always the best service and top quality food. Highly recommend for all!
H. S.
Super Tasty Burgers - The staff was very courteous, the atmosphere was very friendly and relaxing and most of all the burgers were absolutely amazing. Will keep going back for more

L. A. “. R. L. R.
It does exactly what it says on the tin! If you love quality burgers you'll love this place. God help my waistline.
D. H.
The food was pretty decent I'd say. I would recommend the Mac Daddy and the normal chips. It's a good combination.
J. A.
Food is spot on in terms of taste and quality. The service let's it down. Seems like more people on the floor than the kitchen.
T. K.
Brilliant beef roast a must try only available on Sundays though. Probably best burgers in east London, a must try place.
a. a.
Great gourmet burgers. Halal meat is served. Great service. Proper chips are just fab...Great portion sizes is a bonus.

Excellent Service and GREAT Food. Also staff were very nice to my 1 year old daughter giving her toys to play.
Q. A.
Mouthwatering burgers with a mammoth side of fries. One of the few halal burger joints that can do a really good smashed burger.
U. F.
Nice food and milkshake...but the burger size is huge and couldn't finish it. Can share 1 between 2
