Reviews of Sagar Vegan & Vegetarian Restaurant - Hammersmith

18 years this restaurant has been in Hammersmith and it's as good now as it has always been, delicious vegetarian south Indian food and very reasonably priced. Masala Dosa and Thali for the win!
B. J. P.
The food in this place is just amazing, seriously I love it, is one of my favourite restaurants, the staff is really nice, is always a pleasure to go and eat there
A. S.
I’ve been visiting Sagar for years and always enjoy it. Tasty dishes not found in your average Indian restaurant (it’s heaven for vegetarians and vegans), good value and attentive service. Recommend any of the dosas. Pleased to see it’s still going strong after Covid lockdowns.
C. M.
Authentic dishes from South India which was perfect from both a vegetarian and non-vegetarian viewpoint. Friendly staff, competitively priced and nice ambience. Lots of great restaurants in the area but this is definitely one of the best.

100% eating here again. Never eaten so much in my life and I could've kept going. Aloo Gobhi is beautiful!
U. R.
The food was absolutely delicious, especially the sambar which was out of the world! The interiors are aesthetic and the service impeccable. Overall an excellent restaurant, will surely return again.

Terrific! Went with a friend and we could not be more pleased at the service, quantity and taste! Sagar is a great restaurant to introduce foreigners to Indian cuisine and also relieve homesickness of Indians :) The waiter Shamid and the manager were polite, chatty and very professional. Great pricing for a number of dishes and perfectly replicated South Indian cuisine. 11/10 !!
P. Y.
Fantastic eatery with plenty of selection (both South and North Indian), bursting full of flavour. They are also accommodating for allergy requirements which we were really grateful for! Will continue returning here :)

Extensive ‘Udipi’ South Indian menu, though somewhat lacking in important ways. The rava dosa was oily and served lukewarm, though an acceptable value at under £8.00; the udipi thali (platter) was way overpriced at £16.00 and the portions of veg were mean, also served lukewarm. The manager is a nice guy, a constant presence at the restaurant. They just need to up their game a bit more.

Delicious food- daughter had vegan thali I had another one. Fruit juices were also delicious.
Courteous and smart waiters.

Reminds you of home. Very traditional taste of India and feel so happy being here. Simple dishes with extra ordinary taste. Almond drink is a must try option.
Excellent service and very tasty South Indian food. This is my second visit and delivers to the expectations. Would definitely recommend and come back again.
S. K.
The best Bhatura, most similar to the ones in North of India. The rest of the food was amazing, although the Pani Puri was a bit stale. Will definitely recommend.
N. B.
Nice vegetarian restaurant with large section of different Southern Indian Dishes. Cover starters, mains and desserts in large variety. They might be a bit spicy to an inexperienced platter but I found it just stunning. It's fancy Indian food, not so cheap
B. S.
Very good south Indian Restaurant,
Service is very good, probably been served by the boss.
Quantity and prices are good for London based restaurant.
The food is tasty, not warm enough and definitely not as good as my grandma !
I definitely recommend this restaurant for anyone who never tried south Indian food (best food in the world)

I had been meaning to try Sagar for a while now, but just today realised they have a location in Hammersmith near my work. Popped over for lunch and ordered the lunch Thali; initially it was only vegetarian but I requested a vegan option, which they were quick to accommodate. A quick look at the full menu I could see that maybe 80-90% is already vegan and clearly labeled. The food came in less than 10 minutes (maybe even closer to 5 minutes) and was so absolutely amazing... and huge (hand in picture for scale). I could barely finish everything and nothing was "meh"; everything tasted incredible. The Thali even came with a dessert I've never tried before, some kind of semolina-ish cardamon and cashew dish. The VALUE, level of food, service was all impeccable. I'm going to find it difficult to not come here everyday for lunch from now on.
O. A.
Great Indian vegetarian restaurant with lots of different dishes. Dinner for 6, including several beers, weighed in at £170.
C. L.
Food and service were top-notch. This cuisine offers vast vegetarian options, too! The ambiance was nice and cosy.
N. P.
Really got it right even better than on my last visit a time ago. Beautifully spiced dishes and the shrikland dessert was outstanding. A large menu all vegetarian. Warm, clean, welcoming and great service.
N. B.
The food was excellent, fresh, and filling, and for an incredible price. The staff were attentive and polite. I had the channa masala and burata and would definitely recommend.
W. S.
Super service with a smile. Food is good, great selection. The stuffed paratha and chana (chickpea) masala is my favourite.
S. S. (.
Really tasty Indian, quick service -recommend the Raj Thali so good!! Lunch menu is super affordable & really filling -great portion sizes that don’t compromise on flavour. Staff always accommodating & friendly. Love the aunty in the kitchen who does the cooking she’s wonderful! ♥️
H. R.
The food here was incredible! Very clean and friendly staff. Reasonable prices as well. This won’t be my last time here.
D. L.
Best indian Ive had. Everything was amazing. Great service. Bubble bread and dahl were especially delicious. So many Vegan options
M. G.
Just the best South Indian vegetarian Thali! Perfect lunch.
N. C.
Great food and homemade breads, amazing homemade lemonade and sweet lassi. 10/10 recommend
A. S.
Delicious South indian food. We got the food delivered and they promptly delivered
A. M.
Amazing food. Great ambience. 100% genuine Indian taste.
Thalis are delicious in good quantity. I have tried 2/3 thalis on menu and i am hit!
If you are around Hammersmith and want to taste genuine Indian food, don't miss this.
S. M.
Good food nicely balanced spices, lots of choices. Dosa was lovely
K. B.
Had the Rajdhani Thali (pictured). A very filling meal for £20 a head incl drinks.
Also includes poppadoms and chappatis (not pictured)
B. P.
The lunchtime thalli is delicious, filling, and terrific value for money. Service is efficient and courteous. I've been there lots of times, and it's always good.
b. c.
Really good food, and very good vegan/veggie options
J. G.
Went to try a random afternoon and it was surprisingly good. Love South Indian food, which is not the most common type of cuisine you find in London. Food was really fresh and didn't feel heavy as usual after an Indian restaurant. Loved their coconut lentil-based pizza. Very reasonable price and friendly staff too. Will go back.
I. F.
Well, this was surprising. I've been on a bit of a veggie/vegan journey...nothing long term, just trying on for size, really. There were 6 of us looking for a lunchtime venue in Hammersmith and it needed to accommodate some more committed non-meat eaters in our party. We saw this, around 12:45pm on a cold Monday, and gave it a try. It wasn't that busy to begin with but trade picked up within the hour. A great selection of food and plenty that would satisfy. Apart from the inevitable poppadoms we dived into the main meals. I had a vegetable kurma (don't ask me any more details..!)....delicious and mild enough for me. So tasty that my mind never wandered back to the hunt. I had a salad to accompany and this, unusually, came as a thickly cut set of vegetables. Not the normal, or expected, presentation but worked well against the texture of the curry. Highly recommend!

Wondeful flavours of India
I just had lunch at this small smart and unpretentious restaurant in Hammersmith. The vegetarian and vegan menu is so authentic I felt as if I was back in Southern India . The best Indian food I've tasted outside of India. The staff were really helpful and charming. The prices very fair and good value for money . Highly recommend.
A. “. C. A.
Nice for vegetarian many choices great staff and service
V. S.
They have great South Indian food. We love their dosas and their idlis. We eat here fairly regularly and would definitely recommend it!
D. K.
Mediocre food disguised as South Indian cuisine. Very slow service and not so great menu options. Would be nice if the person who waited our table smiled a bit. Felt like eating in a military base.
B.
Food is good but quantity is not great for the price. Authentic South Indian vegetarian food. Hard to find good Indian food in London and this is one of them.
O. B.
This restaurant was on my radar for a while as it is close to home and vegetarian.
My husband and I went there for a random late lunch and were pleasantly surprised. We didn't recognise much on the menu as we are used to 'British' Indian food, rather than South Indian, traditional cuisine. Also, my husband is meat eater and felt a little lost without the familiar lamb or chicken dishes.
But we went all out with 3 courses and were happy we did. The food was tasty and fresh, and we actually asked for an extra bread as the first was so delicious. The portions aren't huge but they are filling enough, and for £29 for 3 courses and 2 beers it wasn't an issue. I wouldn't say it's the best Indian food I've ever had, but it was good.
Service was very polite and professional but I agree with other reviewers, not overly friendly and welcoming. The restaurant was quite quiet and could have done with a bit more atmosphere, both in terms of the staff but also the decor which is very simple. I would recommend this to other vegetarians but wouldn't call it a favourite.
I. A.
I always pass next to this restaurant and I have to say this is one of the best Indian foods I have had in a long time.
It is not the cheapest, but it is quite affordable considering the amazing quality the food has.
Everything was fresh, staff was lovely, I cannot wait to go back.
r. s.
The quality of sambhar and the filling for the masala dosa was not as they had it earlier - the sambhar was very watery - this was a takeaway orded
A. D.
I love authentic south Indian cuisine, and this restaurant is one of my favourites. My wife and I have been coming here 3 or 4 times a year for over a decade and never had a bad dish. Dosas are always perfectly fresh and very pleasing. Staff are pleasant and professional and the place has a friendly, casual atmosphere.
5/5 Keep up the good work!
M. R.
Very nice food. Great price and nice view
A. A.
Great value for money and super tasty food

The lunchtime thalli is delicious, filling, and terrific value for money. Service is efficient and courteous. I've been there lots of times, and it's always good.

Lovely food, great service and good value. Will be back!

Delicious food 😋
M. D.
Nice Indian vegetarian restaurant. Had udipi thali, maharaja thali and mysore masala dosa and Puri... Everything was awsome.
R. S. -. G.
The best veggie South Indian food outside of S India! The dosas are massive and crispy and the service is superb and old school. Love everything about it.
I. A.
I always pass next to this restaurant and I have to say this is one of the best Indian foods I have had in a long time. …
E. B.
I've never been to an Indian restaurant before and I've never tried Indian food either, but my husband told me that he had been here before and he enjoyed the food, so we decided to visit it once again. Well what can I say ? The food is mostly for vegetarians but it's really flavoursome and healthy, which I really liked. The staff were nice, polite and were doing their job just fine. I liked it.
S. M.
Pretty good food and the service was really quick as well.
R. P.
I had great semosas, a lovely glass of red, and an intriguing no-dough plant-based 'pizza'. It was all interesting & perfectly nice - but I'm hoping different choices on a return visit will tempt my taste buds more.
M. M.
Not exceptional but satisfying and well made. An old faithful if the best kind.
M. J.
Great vegetarian Indian food and customer experience
U. G.
I have been having food here for past 2 weeks and I have been pleasantly surprised with the taste of the food served here, Udipi Thali is very good and highly recommended from my end. The other curry I liked was Brinjal masala which had right spices to trigger your taste buds, I would recommend to add Tandoor Nan option.
K. A.
A dedicated #vegan menu in this vegetarian South Indian restaurant is what draws me back here time and again. There is an extensive array of delicately and not-so-delicately flavoured meals depending on your taste.
C. M.
Best Indian restaurant I've ever been to. So I know you're reading this review to find out how good the food is...it's incredible, but I'll come back to that later. The staff are what makes this place. I've never been to a restaurant (or anywhere) that has such a genuine, nice, humble group of people serving their customers. Take some time to chat to them and you will be treated like a king! So, the food! If you need half a chicken and some grease in your curry then keep walking, this place is all about superb vegetarian food that is fragrant and delicious with a vast array of flavours. Their dosas however are where it's at! Experiment with a few and indulge yourself in some of the traditional Indian street food starters like Pani Puri. Add into this their amazing prices and you've got a perfect restaurant. Welcome to your new favourite Indian!
S. T.
We were very excited to have dinner at a pure vegetarian restaurant but the experience was not that great. They have good selection on the menu but the chaat we ordered was disappointing. The samabar with idli was cold. The uttapa was not well done. The chai was okay and the staff was good.
D. B.
Great tasting food, large almost entirely vegan menu, great service and atmosphere, competitive pricing... It's very rarely that I'll have a 3 course meal to myself, but I did here. And I'll return.
M. L. (.
The portions I wish were a bit more for an adult man.
S. W.
We had a super dinner at Sagar. They catered to gluten and dairy free needs (only intolerances not allergies). The service was great and the restaurant was clean. We will return next time we are in town.
M. D.
Nice Indian vegetarian restaurant. Had udipi thali, maharaja thali and mysore masala dosa and Puri... Everything was awsome.
V. V.
One of the rare all-vegetarian restaurants I have found. The food is good for the price, serving sizes are appropriate and filling. Service is fast. Seems to be popular with the local crowd, and on weekends the noise levels tend to be high.
J. C.
Lovely food, great service and good value. Will be back!
n. u.
Ambience is great but the menu is slightly expensive.
The staff is intuitive and polite. Indian food wise, it's authentic but not too spicy. Ideal for family lunches.
K. E.
Love love love this place!!! The food is soooooo good! Nothing more needed, just go and eat as much as you can fit. Recommend the Batura, vegetable kurma, saag also, the dosas (giant) and the vegan thali
M. S.
This is a mini chain of vegetarian Indian restaurants, this is the original one. It's good for dosas and they have a really cheap set lunch on weekdays too. Nice staff, room is a bit basic though.
T. B.
Best paper paneer dosa I've had.
B.
Amazing food. Little expensive but if you are vegetarian you must go and try. Pani Puri starter was mediocre had much better at other places. Dani Puri and chat was amazing. And if you have a sweet tooth must try jaggery dosa.
S. K.
Vegetarian food with south Indian delicacies. Food was good, good size portions and served well. There was lot of crowd when we went for dinner. They accept Amex cards. Owners I believe are from Mangalore side. They could talk fluently in Kannada as well as in Tulu.
A. G. (. घ.
Very surprised to find authentic South Indian cuisine so close to my house. Super excited to visit again. Very tasty food. Must visit for all South Indian cuisine fans.
P. H.
They do an excellent set lunch at a bargain price. It is an all vegetarian restaurant, clean, polite service. I have been many times . You will not be disappointed.
V. V.
Lots of vegan options. But rather average food and expensive. Pani Puri was stale and the chips smelt of old oil. Dosas and Puris were good.
V. N.
I went there for lunch. The restaurant looks good, the staff are friendly. We order approx 5 dishes, out of which 4 were great (Thali, plain dosa, maysoor dosa), but 1 was bad (idli samber). The Idli was definately not fresh, and must have b een sitting in the kitchen for a long time. Overall a 4 star.
N. 2.
I come from Long Island where there is very good Indian food. But I thought that this place had better Indian food than by me. Nothing bad to say about this place.
R. C.
Great food, visited four times this year!!! Various locations around London. Check them out. Perfect for vegans or vegetarians. Very affordable!
J. L.
I really enjoyed the lunch special here. The staff were friendly while I was there & the lunch special was totally filling for £3.50
It is all vegitarian so if you don't mind lacking meat & have veggies in your party, this is the perfect place to have an inexpensive meal that will leave you stuffed or take lunch away though you'll need a nap afterwards!
I. A.
It has reasonable a lunch offer which taste good and is big in portion. Service is quick and staff are accommodating. Just I am not much into Indian.
H. H.
Delicious Indian Restaurant with a nearly 100% vegan menu! Have been there twice whilst my London trip and really enjoyed the dinner every time :-)
A. S.
Bit of a hidden gem down the road from Hammersmith. Seriously good food, perfectly spiced and wonderfully balanced flavours combined with a menu selection you won't find in most Indian restaurants. Well worth a visit.
t. s.
Very good restaurant with very good South Indian food to offer. We tried many different dosas being group of 6 & all were really tasty & well cooked..
J. L.
Simply delicious food, enjoyed all of it. Very pleasant staff, quick service and great prices. While this is a vegetarian restaurant I highly recommend it to anyone!
R. M.
A great south Indian vegetarian restaurant with a couple of location including a small but nicely formed premises on Catherine Street.
they make great dishes like Idli (a steamed Rice Dumpling), and Masala Dosa a type of fried flat-bread. The Paper versions on the main menu are showstoppers and make the large platters look small, and means you get good value for money
While the Rasam was a little hot for,my liking all the other accompaniments and so forth were bang on and super tasty.
N. G.
Dosa's were good as they usually have to be made fresh. Disappointed on Idly's and Sambar Vada. Idly was very dry. Sambar Vada should be served with Vada immersed in Sambar completely...where as the way it was served, we cannot call it Sambar Vada....
M. S.
Mysore Masala and Lemon Rice are my favourites here. One of the few authentic south-indian restaurants in West London. The food is always fresh and flavoursome. Nice decor and good service.
B. S.
They do a fantastic lunch box for £3.50 which is more than enough food and, considering the price, a damn tasty meal. If their eat-in food is anywhere near as good as their takeaway then diners are in for a treat.
C. “. D.
I've recently been introduced to Sagar after years of hearing mixed reviews. I'm sad I waited so long to try this awesome restaurant out! The prices are great, the staff are friendly, the service is fast, and the food is great.
E. E.
Very nice vegetarian Indian food. Many dishes I haven't seen before. A bit pricey for what you get though
V. P.
This is the only South Indian restaurant close to my residence. I discovered it last afternoon and stepped in for dinner last evening. I ordered a plate of idli and a masala uthapam. Both were very good. The sambhar and chutney were great as well except that the servings were a bit small.
R. S.
It's mainly for authentic south Indian food with a few prominent items from other parts of India. Very conveniently located on the main street. Prices could be more reasonable.
A. D.
Delicious South Indian food - especially love the idlis and range of dosas. The lunchtime buffet is great value for money too. Really nice ambiance and friendly service.
y. t.
Been a customer of this lovely restaurant for many years. I always receive great service. The food is amazing. A must try for anyone local or visiting the area.
M. S.
Ordered 2 different (Onion chilli and the masala) Uttapams. Both were bland. Ordered the Bhel Puri as well... Tangy sauces were good but the puffed rice was a bit hard. Over all a good place. Nothing wow-ed us.
M. P. N. (. P.
I love the differing flavours in the "Lunch Special." It all tastes like proper home cooking! 😋 Under £8 for my special lunch visit
V. M. G.
Beautiful place to enjoy your meal if you miss india. My 5 starts to this not pretentious but minimalist and cozy restaurant.
G. B.
Great value vegetarian Indian food. The dosa is the best I've had outside India.
I wish the staff would cheer up though!
V. H.
Delicious!! And several vegan options. Lovely flavours, attentive and quick service. I really enjoyed my experience here.
V. G.
I had a very delightful experience at Sagar - Hammersmith. Food was delicious, and the waiter was very nice. Service was a little on the slow side, but it was peak lunchtime. Overall very good.
S. Å.
A lovely restaurant. I’ve come back countless times both for lunch and dinner. Friendly staff and very good vegetarian food!
M. L.
Very good food. Went on a Wednesday and can get a table for two. Probably not as spicy as Indians would like but still very good.
C. C.
The prices are too high if compared to other vegetarian restaurants. Food was a bit oily than expected. Still i enjoyed the dinner.
M. G.
I had an amazing meal at this fantastic restaurant. I went for a dry curry and a bottle of wine and it was absolutely perfect.
M. R.
The food was delicious, staff very friendly I would definitely come back. However the entire restaurant had an unplesent smell of damp throughout, which spoilt the overall experience.
E. D.
I have been visiting Sgar for years...the best south Indian food in London and I Have been eating in a few south Indian restaurant in my life. Food and drinks are very inexpensive.
J. N.
Great restaurant, with a nice variety of food. As a meet eater i went there curiously and the food was amazing. Definitely going back and highly recommend.
M. K.
The food was ok. The staff was a bit weird and they were staring at us while we were eating. Overall average place.
V. L.
Very nicely cooked vegetarian Indian food. Feels very authentic Indian cooking. A good lunch time place.
S. A.
The starters are nice but the main courses weren't as good. The dosa was dry and far too crumbly to eat comfortably.
C. L.
The food is so yummy! I hope to go back very soon. Get the vegan thali!
S. S.
Had a great time here. Awesome food, super awesome service. Will come back here again surely before we have to leave in a few days.
A. A.
Great value for money and super tasty food
M. R.
Lunch offer is absolutely amazing - price is an incentive, the quality of this food is incomparable to anything else. I strongly recommend this place.
T. d. F.
Nice vegetarian restaurant. Specially the lentil and rice pizza with onion tomato and coconut topping. Friendy staff too. Recommend
C. H.
Amazing food, generous portions and lovely, classy ambience. Get the thali for sure - more than enough for two people!
S. J.
Very nice fresh tasty food. And very affordable and I'm very fussy with Indian food. The staff are lovely too!
V. S.
Authentic indian food. I am from Mumbai and can say this is one of the very few good authentic quality Indian restaurants in London. Gr8 prople gr8 food.
B. W.
Super amazing. Come for lunch! Crazy good lunch deal. 6.95 for like heaps of little different things.
S. H.
Most of the dishes are good.
N. N.
Enjoyable food in a stylish wooden interior. Enjoyed the thali. Some staff could be friendlier though.
R. D. M.
Really tasty and authentic dosa for reasonable prices.
B. D.
The food, the atmosphere, the service is OK. The is just nothing ... special in the place. The prices are probably a bit high for vegetarian place.
A. P.
A very good place to have South Indian specialities like idlis, dosas, utthapams and vadas. Good choice of beers and wines too.
U. S.
Good South Indian food, authentic taste... Staff could be a bit friendly though...
R. F.
Really good vegetarian Indian restaurant in Hammersmith. If you want some light yet tasty food, go here - it's also very reasonably priced.
I. J.
Wonderful food, honest prices, not giving it 5* it because it lacks a bit of ambience and the waiters are still a bit old school gruff
N. J.
Best filter coffee ☺️
C.
Varied menu. Excellent food. Clean and light interior with very helpful staff.
L. D.
Authentic taste (I'm from the region), good prices , no nonsense service ie typical of the Indian subcontinent..
D. F.
Celebrated our friends birthday here, have been before, it’s really great dishes and flavours, great value
S. V.
Food is good and ambience is really good. Pricey for what it is.. An Udipi place is known for affordable good quality vegetarian food.

Fantastic food. Relaxed atmosphere. Host took time to explain the different foods on the menu.

What an amazing restaurant - the lunchtime thali for £5.99 is the one to go for as its an absolute bargain - it's a dish with little tasters of the curries & served with a dosa & chutney & the service is second to none.
V. C.
By far the best south Indian restaurant I have ever been to in UK !! A must for all d south Indian food lovers !! Jamun was mouth watering !!

(Translated) Quality Indian food and well prepared. In the area, his proposal is really convincing; try the unique big plate with different specialties of South Indian cuisine. Environment ok.

Cibo indiano di qualità e ben preparato. In zona, la sua proposta è veramente convincente; da provare il piatto grande unico con diverse specialità della cucina indiana del sud. Ambiente ok.

(Translated) It's a vegan South Indian restaurant, and it's okay if you don't know much about Indian food and don't eat it. It doesn't have a strong scent and has a British patch. Personally, I like the local style South Indian food, but I was a bit disappointed. It didn't taste bad though. It seems that Indians and British are also looking for a lot. The picture is paneer dosa!
