Reviews of St. JOHN Bread and Wine
J. M.
Great food! Super lunch. We had a selection of 5 dishes and a dessert to share; possibly 4 would have been sufficient. The saddle of Rabbit and Ox Tongue were standout alongside the other wonderful dishes. The wine list matches the food in style with great pairing recommendations. The no-nonsense decoration somehow reinforces the importance of the food. You see the chefs in the kitchen calmly serving up divine dishes. The serving staff are knowledgeable and fun. There is good wheelchair access and space. Recommended.

I was told by many people that this was one of their favourite restaurants in London, but I was quite disappointed with the food. The service was great, and the wine was great! However, none of the dishes we ordered stood out, and for the bill to round up to £90 for a mediocre meal was a bit disappointing. Hopefully the dishes can improve because the restaurant itself has a nice ambience.
R. Y.
I’ve been here several times over the years and it never fails to please. The wine list is exhaustive with reasonable prices and the food is sublime. The service is attentive and the atmosphere welcoming and casual. Don’t leave without having some of the signature madeleines and grab a loaf of bread to take home. This is one of my favourite restaurants.

I loved the environment, the staff and general feel of the restaurant. We were only two and the last sitting so didn't get too much choice (they swap out dishes throughout the night). I'd recommend going with at least 4 people and ordering a few bits to try as each dish has a lot of different flavours it can get a bit overwhelming
H. S.
Always excellent food with a relatively limited, but delicious menu. Be aware that they will only hold your table for 15 minutes, even with card details and if you phone to say you are running late as per their instructions on their website. Very popular - do book in advance.
R. D.
Yes, this is the best bacon sarnie of my life. So happy they are open again, for morning takeout. Fab coffee & OMG those doughnuts. Brilliant team working here too. I went in October 2021, and this is the only reason I went to my office.
M. D.
I've heard great things about this place but was unfortunately let down. My partner and I ordered some vegetable starter dishes, the terrine and pie to share with a side of chips. The best courses were the veggies, the terrine was very dry with little flavour, but the pie was truly awful. The pastry at the bottom was soggy and doughy and the gravy was the consistency of water and to be honest its out me off pies for a while. Great wine and wine list though. Service also very friendly.

The most amazing meal I've ever eaten in my entire life. I've read nose to tail cover to cover. Attempted several of the recipes at home but there's nothing like trying it from the original source. It's one of the few restaurants out there that delivers on its own hype. I didn't get our servers name however he almost looks like a young Fergus Henderson. If he is reading this thankyou for every recommendation you made. You definitely made our night.

It was great to have a causal lunch with St. John bread& wine after pandemic. The classic bone marrow salad was still as amazing as always, so as their brilliant madeleine ❤️❤️❤️

A sister restaurant to the famous St John Smithfield, Bread and Wine serves food in an informal canteen style dining room. The Jerusalem artichoke was pleasant and the ox heart was pretty good, special mention to the crispy thick cut chips that accompanied the ox heart. The roast saddleback was a bit of a let down, it was dry and slightly bland though the salad that accompanied it was good (the sweetness of the shallots balanced the acidity of the salad dressing nicely). Giving the restaurant the benefit of the doubt, the table to our left received a seemingly more appetising and juicy cut of pork so perhaps it was just our luck. The wine that was recommended by the waitress was paired nicely with the food and it seems they have quite the alcohol collection.
Overall it was a plesant experience though it did not live up to the hype I gave it. Will give it another go.
J. R.
Probably my favorite restaurant in London. Well, this and the Smithfield one. The food has been fantastic every single time I've been here. The wine list is great, and they even have very nice beers on tap (Burning Sky is what you'd call a brewer's brewery, and their beer was on tap).
I pretty much always try to have some chips and the Welsh rarebit no matter what I'm having because they're just so spectacularly delicious. For an aperitif, I'd recommend the Dr. Henderson. Lovely mix of bitter and sweet and refreshing. What else? Oh - the service is unassuming, and the atmosphere is somehow very casual and inviting. It's a very relaxed dining experience that you'll never want to end.

we had the whole hog
it was a jubilant pageantry for sure
never not lovely dining at st. john
when i’m not here i always wish i was here instead

Enjoyed my meal with my lovely friends from home.
A simple and neat restaurant with no excessive decoration. The restaurant was full and it can be a bit noisy as everyone is enjoying their meal and chatting with one another.
Staff is absolutely sweet and nice. You can see them wearing their smile whenever they check on you and see if everything is alright. And of course, when they serve every single dish.
My favourite would be the devilled mussel. Its cooked perfectly and so fresh. We all know seafood can be tricky sometimes. To be fair all other dishes are cooked in perfect timing. See the picture of the fish its so perfect)
Personally i wish the ox tongue can be cut thicker than it is now so the tenderness and flavour can be maximised. However I believe ox tongue is cooked differently in all different cultures.

Unique and interesting place to eat. Expensive with portions on the small side. Good selection of wines and sharing dishes with knowledgeable and friendly service.
L. Y.
Love their specially curated breakfast menu on Christmas Eve, especially the Kipper and Sourdough Toast. They do serve some good bakery. Good dining experience albeit the price is slightly on the higher side.
M. L. G.
The food and the service was absolutely spot on.
Thank you so much for, your recommendations, friendly service and most importantly squeezing us in this evening, it really was the highlight of our evening and we really were made to feel very welcome.
I couldn't fault any part of the evening with St.JOHN the drinks and food were sublime - we'll certainly be back and make sure we book next time!

Came for lunch (which starts at one) on a Saturday. Was busy, so I'd recommend making a reservation. Homely, well cooked, and filling British fare. Roasted marrow bones their signature dish. Had the duck hearts with aioli - garlic packed a huge (but lovely) punch - not for the faint hearted!
M. B.
No-nonsense, seasonal British fare with a focus on game and offal, though I wish there was more of the latter. Menu changes regularly, with never a bad dish and a few standouts (braised rabbit, for example). Top-shelf wine list, as expected from the group.
J. R.
I unfortunately was not happy about food at St John Bread and Wine. The waiter was very kind, and the house wine good; also the madeleines high quality. But the wait was endless, and we just ordered a few dishes to share, as suggested. However, there is no point in sharing a few dishes if you have to wait half an hour between each of them! The starters were tasteless, and the main very poor - still very pricy! I had previously been at Smithfield which was instead good.
A. H.
This is a storied and historic restaurant - and it doesn’t disappoint. The bone marrow dish was delicious. There’s an array of fantastic wines on offer, and the atmosphere is great: somehow it’s upscale but informal and welcoming. Friendly and attentive staff. A real treat!
F. C. M.
A gastronomic temple that is consistently a joy to visit. It goes without saying that the food is fabulous. It is paired with an excellent wine list, with great choices available by the glass. Service is fantastic. The place is casual, vibrant and fun.
M. D.
We randomly found this St. John’s restaurant while walking around looking for a place to have lunch. The decoration is pretty much similar to the other St. john in Market street, and they also change the menu constantly. We ordered some appetizers (the terrine was awesome) and the smoked cod’s roe looked delicious. Confit de canard with potatoes was very good as well. We didn’t have room for desserts but they prepare (when you order) madeleines. Staff was friendly and we were lucky to get a table without reservation, because we were told afterwards that it is usually not possible due to lack of availability.
R. R.
Beautiful simple spot in Spitalfields that serves top quality wines and small plates at great prices. Kidneys on toast are a surprisingly delectable combination and their desserts should not be missed. Service is top notch
B. N.
I had devilled kidneys and a coffee for around £13. If there is a better breakfast in London I would like to hear about it. Firstly, the portion size was generous, and it was relatively cheap compared to other options of this quality in this city. Secondly, the sauce and the butter complemented the kidneys perfectly. Thirdly, the rare joy of eating fatty, meaty, rich, artery clogging food feels like a massive act of indulgence that one can only engage in occasionally. Perfect. Breakfast.
T. M.
Went for late dinner. Service was nice with helpful and friendly staff. Food was great with some unusual dishes. Atmosphere is relax. Great place to share meal with friends. Would recommend !
R. C.
This place really lives up to its reputation. Fantastic flavours and beautifully cooked. Really worth the money. Thoroughly recommend the blood porridge. And the deviled kidneys were perfect. Also, make sure you get a pastry (the Eccles cakes are beautiful)
M. J.
An absolutely essential London culinary experience. Forget everything you think you know about what foods you like. (If you think you don’t like organ meats, for instance, you will love how they do they here.) A foodie revelation.
B. B.
If you like unpretentious cooking in a causal dining environment and an opportunity to try unusual cuts of meat then you can't really go wrong (also a great option if you can't get a table at its Michelin starred sister restaurant).
Not cheap but, like the rest of the St John stable, still manages to stay near the front of the pack despite nose to tail eating having become part of the culinary mainstream.
Been a few times and you know what to expect. Last visit took in cob nuts, crispy lambs' tongues, quail with celeriac, a spectacularly good spiced pigeon stew, and a lovely treacle tart. All good, but be prepared to put a bit of effort in to carve the game birds!
R. C.
We popped in for breakfast and found the food delicious and fairly reasonably priced. (Though £3.60 for a glass of definitely not freshly squeezed, and decidedly average orange juice seemed a bit much).
The bakery goods looked, and were, excellent. We took away a butterscotch doughnut and a cinnamon bun, yum!
D. O.
Nice restaurant, staff, and simple, down to earth amptmosphere. The food was definitely a step outside the comfort zone for some of us. Which is why we chose to have lunch at this restaurant.
We all had a nice time and definitely had our eyes opened to what "nose to tail" eating is all about.
A. A.
Loved it. Share it like tapas. Good vibes, nice service. The roast bone barrow is their signature dish. The other one is a skate cheeks salad. Both very nice. Decent price
C. L.
Very accommodating staff, great advice on wine selection (and a great wine selection), a refined taste and hearty dishes for all tastes. I recommend without hesitation. Thank you 💞
m. s.
Even with all London has to offer I returned here 2 days in a row while visiting.
The staff are lovely and professional. I had the fortune of trying the bacon sandwich, a doughnut and a brownie from here and each and every one was worth the price and beyond. Each is greater than the sum of its parts.
Do not leave London without visiting here.
e. j.
Easily the best custard donut that I have ever had. Went in around mid morning and had two donuts to take away. Would have sat in for breakfast if we hadn’t been in a rush. Had to have a moment outside to steady myself after the first bite. So incredibly good!
Also, the waiter who served us was incredibly sweet as well.
A. M.
Not particularly easy to get a reservation here, but is absolutely worthwhile. Service is top notch, as is the food and wine selection. The bone marrow and cauliflower dishes in particular were spectacular; this is traditional British cuisine at some of it's finest. Also, while the setting is rather informal and intimate, this definitely is a high end restaurant.
S. D.
Came here for breakfast and had some of the best bread I've ever tasted. We had kippers on toast and the bacon sandwich and the portions were very generous. The service was fantastic, everyone was very friendly and nice to talk to. Will definitely be back next time I'm in town.
S. P.
Authentic traditional British cuisine. I ordered the bone marrow. It was not what I expected. I’m not a big fan British cuisine as I’ve come to find. Maybe you would really like the place if you like British food. It’s kind of cozy inside. It’s a popular place so I recommend making reservations. It was an interesting experience, but I personally wouldn’t stop by again.
J. B.
Amazing food, knowledgeable and kind staff, great wine selection.
From start to finish not one dish was disappointing. I was lucky enough to try the spiced rabbit and it was nothing short of incredible. Eccles cake with cheese is not something I'd ever thought would work together but colour me wrong and impressed.
Very much recommended! Thanks guys
S. P.
Grab an ale, a cider, some cheese and some bread. It’s pretty simple and pretty amazing.
K. S.
An amazing venue with incredible food. It was back to basics, and just great cooking. The wines were good, mostly French. Richard was the standout, with great food and wine knowledge, he took his time with us and was patient and attentive.
W. C.
The staff was very kind. Introduce and explain their menu and food one by one. Very patient. Food is very delicious! Unfogettable taste.
A. C.
Very nice and airy place with very good food. Best shared, the plates offer a nice glimpse of British cuisine - bite sized. Attentive staff - will be back.
M. V.
Very good food with an amazing nose-to-tail philosophy. Paired with a casual but great service it just makes for an overall very enjoyable experience.
P. B.
This is a restaurant I have been excited to try for a long time. I am a big fan of Fergus Henderson and have read The Complete Nose To Tail and tried recipes from it and enjoy the stripped back recipes utilising all of the animal.
While in London I had the opportunity to go to Bread and Wine for breakfast. I went for the devilled kidneys as I love meat, these were outstanding and I had to buy some extra toast to mop up all the juices. If I had an unlimited budget I would have gorged myself on the whole menu while washing it down with a Dr Henderson cocktail. Alas that was not the case so had to settle for the best doughnut I have ever had.
J. P. G.
Very accommodating staff and the best madeleines this side of London.
The bread pudding with vanilla ice cream is also a must-try! The dark chocolate slab is a bit too rich and alcohol-y in flavor, slightly resembling the Royce Nama Champagne chocolate cubes.
j. M.
Enjoyed a quick bite in B&W. Seasonal marsh samphire with butter. And rabbit offal, radish & quince jelly.
Although sweltering hot and not busy it still holds the "hallowed" feeling
C. S.
Every morsel was delightful. Do try the Black cuttlefish. Tender, amazing flavor!
E.
Excellent. I've long admired their nose-to-tail philosophy but as a former veggie it took me some time to pluck up the courage to give St John a try. A voyage of discovery that I plan to continue on future visits.
J. L.
Nice but laboured the food. Managed to make a light fish dish heavy and soggy. The flavours and service good, nice relaxed place to sit. Generally good, I was just slightly disappointed by the food.
I. M.
Great food. Not cheap but priced about right
M. T.
Delicious! Had fried cod roe, duck heart salad, and beef heart main. Can't leave without madelines either!
B. C.
Came in the other day for a friend's birthday. The food and drinks were great, the negronis are awesome. Our waitress Emily really sealed the deal -- she was super friendly and gave us great recommendations. Thanks Emily!
R. B.
When friends from abroad ask me where to go to try amazing British food, I always send them here. The menu makes clever twists on traditional fare, and use cuts of meat that others don't dare.
A. M.
Had a lovely meal. The menu was really varied and the food was outstanding. Staff were very friendly and took a lot of time to explain the menu
k. a.
So happy they're back. Eaten here a few times by now. So many amazing dishes. Today I had pork crackling and fennel. Also the devilled Devon crab. The former great, the latter is absolute perfection. Brilliant service too! Oh and lovely wine.
D. P.
So many delicious things!!!! Rarebit to die for.
D. L.
Fish and vegetables is good, sweetbread is chopped up too small and over cooked losing texture and taste.
C. B.
Exquisite, melt in your mouth, rustic home comforts. The liver. Get the liver.
R. T.
I went for breakfast and was greeted by wonderful staff and very good quality food in a lovely space. The approach is to focus on the quality of the food rather than the quantity.
h. s.
I haven't been in exactly 10 years, but I can still taste the bread and pickled duck hearts. This was my daily spot when I lived around the corner for a year. I've heard Londonland has many delicious small restaurants these days, but as an expat foodie from San Francisco back then, I had trouble finding fresh, organic and flavorful food. The chef here is truly remarkable, and the ingredients are superb.
M. A.
Madeleines were to die for! Warm and homely taste well worth the 15min wait!
A. W.
Good English food. Love the on site baked goods and generous portions.
J. W.
Friendly staff kept the beers flowing on a very hot London evening. The food is absolutely top notch. All small plates perfectly cooked and presented. Lots of variety to tempt us and we kept ordering new dishes (but I did give the snails a miss).
G.
Interesting menu and quite tasty but some adventurous dining mindset is needed.
L. S.
Loved our experience here!! We had a bacon sandwich.
We visited here on a food tour. I highly recommend!
O. S.
Good food (especially recommend the madeleines!) however the restaurant doesn’t really have a vibe, and the service is a bit slow. Go there with a group, or get takeaway!
r. a.
That is what we call : an experience, a classic
All in all a great time there and a real dedication to food.
G. S.
Although everything we ate was really tasty I can't help but feel like a little ripped off when they served us a small plate of TOMATOES for £9.80... a plate of tomatoes costed more than one of the desserts we had which was drenched in rum. How can a plate of tomatoes cost more than brioche, rum, cream and peaches? The mind boggles.
Yummy? Yep.
Pretentious? I'm genuinely sorry to say but yep!
Having said that, our waitress was really nice and, again, the food was delicious.
I probably wouldn't go back again but it was a nice experience.
A. C.
Great kidneys on toast and coffee. Not too crowded and service was good. Reasonable prices, too.
O. B.
The absolute best bacon sandwich hands down. Exquisite doughnuts as well. Lunch is good too if a bit on the pricy side.
Z. A.
The food was outstanding. The produce is brought in daily from a range of suppliers, with ever changing cuts of meat and vegetables, all of which are of a great quality. The menu changes twice daily depending on what the suppliers have caught and foraged, and combined with St Johns 'Nose to Tail' approach this makes for some incredibly interesting and delicious dishes. The food can range from fantastic classics such as Venison Pudding to obscure pleasures such as their Lamb brain. The vegetarian dishes are also fantastic...and don't even get me started on dessert
F. F.
Brilliant ambience, super service etc I enjoyed the ready now shared menu I would recommend
A. B.
Our waiter was nice and really helped us order. Despite the menu being a little vague we ended up ordering amazing dishes!Best Bacon Sandwich of my life! Discovered this place from a local food tour. Went back the very next day for some more. Incredible spot with a great vibe. Would recommend over and over and over again!
J. K.
Looked forward to dinning there. It didn't disappoint. Everything from appetizers, main course to deserts was wonderful.
Actually more reasonable than I figured.
G. D.
A delicious dinner selected from a varied and tempting menu, served by smart and attentive staff. I enjoyed the less formal atmosphere and felt welcome and relaxed alongside the efficient hygiene. I will definitely be back.
Z. W.
Back again got my fifth visit. Excellent food and friendly service keeps me coming back, this time for a birthday lunch for 9 people. Starters, mains and drinks for £40 a head. We were too full following that for dessert or even to have the birthday cake that we had brought with us and that the restaurant said they were happy for us to have in the restaurant, which was great. If you want to buy any bread to take home from the bakery window, make sure you go in the morning because they had run out by 3pm when we were finishing up.
j. e.
Always great food and wine. Service is amazing

Lovely family place and easy dining

Always one favourite!

Just very very good.

Lovely staff! Do order the Welsh Rarebit 🤩
C. L.
Nice and cozy place simple and amazing meal.
G. L.
Gorgeous food, great service, terrific wines
You have to go there many times so you can test everything. Do not forget to ask for the madeleines, you can cry while eating them, people here understand emotions.
Thanks a lot.
Be calm and eat at St John Bread and Wine.
A. S.
Cuttle fish with aioli was delicious and the terrine of the day too. The roast beef was a bit dry and the toasts soaked in broth underneath were insanely good.
Overall food is nice and of good quality. I had an eccle's cake to to which was delicious as usual.
It's a bit expensive per head at 30£ without drinks.
R. T.
One of the most important restaurants in England. Demonstrating amazing food daily. No fuss and no distractions. Menu updated twice daily and specials provided for each service.
Ox tougue terrine was amazing.
Simply amazing British food, this is what modern British food is.
Top service too.
Would return in a heartbeat.
K. T.
Came for my dad's birthday and had the best time. The food was exceptional and the service was top notch. I'd highly recommend this to someone looks for some excellent British dining experience.
R. P.
Good food if difficult to pick due to you probably never having heard of any of it before. Tapas style mixture of British dishes, often tasty. Watch out for pricey 'cakeage' fee for birthdays - the friendly staff brought out plates way before the cake for us and rather ruined the surprise somewhat (I'm sure they were too busy to think about the order of things). Perhaps they were low on staff actually as it took 45mins for drinks and we had to chase them on it, they also forgot about a dish. All of those things considered, still enjoyed it although a touch too pricey.
J. N. R.
Great food. Calf brains, pig tail, trotters, offal. Mostly small dishes so worth ordering three plates per person, or more. Good wines and desert wine too. I always come out of here happy. Earlier sittings probably a good idea as they strike things off the menu.
D. M.
Had the bacon sandwich and strawberry donut. The donut was great, but the sandwich felt a bit lacking. It was good, but I think I just expected more. Bacon? A sauce? An egg? Something. The bread was real good though. I wouldn't make a trip for it.
L. B.
One of my favourite restaurants in London. The food is really tasty and you get a very good wine selection. Can highly recommend their lobster, which one is probably the best in town. A great place for romantic dinner or for family dinner.
J. F.
Some of the best food I've had in London. Great bone marrow and welsh rarebit. I thought it was priced more reasonably than many other popular London food places. Very enthusiastic waiting staff. If I was a tourist in London and wanted to eat 'English' food, I'd go here for sure (or the other St John).
E.
I've wanted to visit here for many long time. Finally slotted in for Friday lunch. Ideal spot for over-ordering small(ish) plates of daily changed dishes. Such a shame the devilled kidneys and fried tripe were not on the menu when we visited and there was a lack of offal - I know this is the less offally version at B+W as opposed the main restaurant but the menu the day before was 💯. We had a delicious lunch as pictured and the service was thoughtful and attentive. Order the buck rarebit or you're very likely to regret it.
L. L.
Lovely food, great atmosphere and service.
L. d.
A concise and beautifully curated menu that is fresh and equal parts exciting and enticing. The waitstaff were knowledgeable and friendly without ever being overbearing and the wine list was a revelation! Can’t wait to return next trip.
B. H.
This is the smaller location of St. John's but with the same quality and philosophy. I actually went here first before going to the main house at St. John's square. I came in literally knowing nothing of Fergus Henderson and his nose to tail kitchen. I was blown away by the simplicity of the food. It delivers so much flavour! The place is rather quirky and full of odds but I love it very much. Go there for breakfast and enjoy the best doughnuts you've ever eaten!
A. Y.
Another restaurant that doesn't need any more 5 star reviews... Which means that service, food, wine, and price for the quality were all impeccable. So maybe an interesting thing or two. They had on the special menu a kid (baby goat) heart dish. I was the first table to arrive at the restaurant when it opened and it was sold out when I tried to order because another table ordered it first. This means there was only ever 1 available so one must speculate then why this was the case (leftover offal or just marketing?). Its not a knock on the review but I need to throw something unique out there right?
A. H.
Love the place. Food is great. They provide some unusual ingredient in the menu but very tasty. Service is good too. The only thing I'd address here is the exhausted fan in the kitchen didn't seem to work properly so we smell when we finish the food.
L. R.
Great place very simple but delicious food. Even more simple approach than the original restaurant. The dining space is lovely a high ceiling which lets lots of light in during the early evening. Service is usually good, there is a nice wine list available.
A. B.
To die for: how wrong is it to have bone marrow and foie grad for lunch?
D. S.
Unjustifiably overpriced esoteric menu in a sterile restaurant environment that'll leave you confused what you just experienced and somewhat satisfied at best. I'm all for the occasional foray into a bit edgier of a meal but the line is drawn when "wet walnuts and backfat" is literally just that on a plate. Skip it. All of it.
C. B.
Food was really good. An interesting menu and a good supporting wine list. Wines seemed a tad overpriced but this is London. Wait staff was great, helpful and fun.
e. t.
We tried the puddings which were good but nothing extra ordinary. It was a classic british menu with emphasis on humble- everyday ingredients. Their wine list is impressive; I ordered a sweet but delicate sherry to pair with the peach trifle and freshly baked madeleines.
It is located near Spitafields market, on Commercial street; you can't tell from the outside but when you enter the place feels cozy and casual like a canteen. It is spacious, bright and white. The stuff at first glance seemed a bit pretentious but they were actually quite polite and well-informed when they came to assist us
D.
Breakfast! The bacon sandwich is second to none. The sourdough has the best crunchy crust and just the right amount of butter melted into the toast; the meat is nice and thick and so tasty with the subtle charring adding to the experience. Try the freshly squeezed pink grapefruit juice. You'll be in luck if the blood cake is on the menu!
m. k.
Had blood porridge with a poached egg. My partner opted for the bacon sandwich. The food seemed simple but every part felt like it was done right. Loads of care in the ingredients. Fab
S. W.
The crispy pork cheek was amazing. It was so perfect a truly well balanced dish!
Service and atmosphere was, as always, great! Highly recommend going here if you have never been.
S. M.
Everything about this place was soo good. We were so well looked after, having a shocker of a day in all honesty, and they turned it all around for us with super friendly service, great wine and delicious traditional food. Thanks again guys.

Very nice meal we had around 3 different dishes which were nicely prepared and finished with a sorbet which was excellent. I cannot give 5 stars because service lacked a bit of knowledge the menu knowledge was not very helpful and also a bit slow, we were there towards end of the service but I would expect higher standards for such a renowned restaurant group
B. M.
It's a great London classic! Great food, good service and the twist we all like about St John's : a few unexpected ingredients served in simplicity. Scrumptious puddings.
A. W.
I'm vegetarian so was a little apprehensive when invited here by a friend. But all my worries fell away when I discovered the sterling service and delicious options. Got chatting to a lovely blonde server behind the bar and was blown out of the water by her coffee knowledge and she whipped me up a shockingly good whiskey sour. Will be returning. Oh and surprisingly affordable for Shoreditch.

Come here for exactly what the name suggests: bread and wine. Both excellent. Everything else, not so much. Cold duck was chewy and unappetizing. Cabbage salad with prawns felt like a sad version of a Thai dish. But I'd go back for a nice glass of wine.

Excellent Modern British sharing plates for around a tenner each, with an emphasis on the strange parts of animals. The plates are mostly some combination of pickles, burnt toast or tangy, seasonal salad, served with fatty, tender flesh. The flavours aren't subtle (they're robust), the combinations aren't intellectual (they're basic), the presentation isn't striking (it's barebones). It's like nowhere else, in other words (except for all other Modern British restaurants, which are imitations of St Johns). Advice on what to order? Remember to check the chalkboard for specials! The crab they are doing at the moment is fabulous: a generous heap of flavoursome, tender meat on a crunchy slice of toast. And it ought to be mandatory to have bone marrow and a desert (the latter of which are generally very good).

Had another excellent meal here. The menu is of course very different and not all the dishes are to my taste. But those that are, are good and interesting.
s. e.
Always excellent! Wonderful food, great service.
A. S.
My fifth visit, and my fiancée's third. If you don't dine here, you're truly missing out on a London instution.
Don't miss the roasted bone marrow and parsley salad or the sweetbreads and bacon, if they're on the menu. An excellent selection of good wines and beers are also available.
For breakfast, the bacon sandwiches are near magical.
R. B.
Fabulous food and great informal service.
L. F.
Oh my god. Pure lush. I'll go over and over again.

Opens at 11. I was the first in. Staff were eating breakfast and having their daily briefing. Wanted the Madeira and slice of seed cake to set us up for a Brick Lane, cold day wander. They had only 1 measure of Madeira and NO seed cake!! So I had the meira, me mate had a fine sherry and we split a sensational good, dense, punchy Eccles cake. Quite rescued a potential disaster!
T. V. D.
Pig skin salad was inedible. Soggy pork scratching ...no thank you. Fish was delicious..but that's not what I came for. Setting and location are great
Z.
Exceeded my expectations! Everything was delicious and staff were cheery and helpful without being overbearing. The relaxed atmosphere is simply enjoyable with wine and friends.
A. W.
Had a lovely meal and it was even lovelier when we reminded the waiter to remove the £40.00 'eat out to help out deduction', Don't forget to claim it!
J. G.
Absolutely delicious food with a menu that changes daily. Flavours and textures are beautifully balanced and there's a deep attention to detail even without it being stuffy.
J. C.
Every time I eat here I am positively delighted. The food is interesting, a little adventurous, and there's something for most moods with a nice atmosphere.
S. N.
Lovely family place and easy dining
S.
I go for the bone marrow but their seasonal menus and fresh ingredients make it an easy place to go back to. The Madeline's are a warm and lovely way to end the meal.
V.
Sublime. Perfection. Best porridge, best bacon sandwich, best salad. Best dinners. My one regret was that I missed their knickerbocker glory.
S. R.
Loved it here, was a Monday lunchtime so was relatively quiet at the time but the service was excellent and the food delicious, there were three of us and we tried about 6 dishes with desert and this was more than enough for us.
t. S.
The highlight of our trip to London at Christmastime in 2017. Had the marrow and crostini amongst other nummy stuff. What a treat!
G. R.
Lovely experience from beginning to end with wonderful food... especially the devilled crab.
C. M.
Always good. Although famously meat focused the vegetarian and fish options are fantastic. The doughnuts are great too.
A. K.
One of my favourite spots to eat, breakfast, lunch or dinner. Great service, lovely big room and an amazing choice of wines.
L. D.
Small plates meant to share. Try the bone marrow it's absolutely decadent. Great atmosphere, cocktails and service.
J. F.
Such a nice place for food and wine. Lovely staff, reasonable prices and a nice relaxed atmosphere. A definite regular stop with friends!

London's most authentic and quintessential restaurant. British cuisine is not an oxymoron here.

M. B.
Phenomenal. The food is delicious, fresh and healthy. The service is fast and friendly. I couldn’t recommend this place more

One of the most important restaurants in recent history. I like this branch better than the original because it's more causal and affordable.

K. M.
LOVE this place.everything from the menu to the staff, the prices to the quality of the food and drinks is not just right it is above and beyond.definitely one of the BEST places in London if you are sick of pretentious places who just want to pull money out of your pocket for mediocre food.
R. W.
Great fresh donuts! I had one with a chocolate custard filling- it was surprisingly light and not too rich
B. O. G.
Our waiter was outstanding but I thought the food should have been better especially because of the price and hype.
S. G.
Definitely losing its edge after all these years. It's not surprising, I suppose, but after years as a go-to London restaurant, its no longer a staple. C'est la vie.
K. S.
Great service. Food always different. Booking recommended
B. C.
One of my favourite restaurants..solid, meat and veg plus a good selection of wines
A. L.

Enjoyed the food but service could improve. The waiters were friendly but not very attentive. We had finished our mains and waited for 20 minutes before we managed to get someone's attention to clear the table and bring us the dessert menu.
I. J.
Lovely place with great food. We will be back!

(Translated) I thought that English cooking didn't exist or at least it didn't offer any dish worthy of note but I had to change my mind! In a very casual and old-fashioned tavern you are greeted by the owner who also chews a little Italian that shows you the gastronomic path to follow. Rely on him and you will not regret! I enclose the photos of the menu and dishes that are worth a thousand words. I forgot: booking a lot in advance, finding a free table can be a business. Prices a little 'above average but amply justified.

(Translated) Very rich and varied cuisine, every day they change the menu both at noon and at night according to market. The rustic and authentic place, very cozy, impeccable service, very friendly. They gave us homemade bread to go!

(Translated) Traditional English food very good but not for all tastes. Better take a look at the letter before going ;-)
Super attentive staff explained the dishes very patiently 😁
We ordered fish with butter and shrimp
and artichokes with salad
Both dishes very good.
P.S.
If you do not get a table, do not eat at the bar because it is very uncomfortable.
(Original)
