I had the glory of working here as a young man in the summer holidays and a massive perk of the job was sitting down and having a first class piece of fish for my hard toil.
Nice place to work fantastic food and great to see its still going strong even after all these years

I completely understand why this place has been open for so long. It’s every seafood lovers dream. We were recommended this place by a local and I’m so glad we took his advice.
We came during a very busy lunchtime. Seating didn’t take too long. My roommate and i enjoyed many dishes here and very much over indulged on the delicious food.
We had eel, the pot pie, and the lobster mash. I would HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend the eel. It was some of the best eel I’ve ever had in my life. The lobster mash was full of flavor and paired well with the wine the server had suggested. My roommate was extremely satisfied with the well made pot pie. Def have a look at this gem!

My new favorite! You can feel the age of this place. Great service, great selection what can I say... Good was perfect, the sides were great! Smoked eel as an entrée was the right recommendation as was the bait fish! I will be back!

Great seafood restaurant with attentive and convivial service. Great seafood cooked simply. And the chips were fab as well!

Totally charming drinking black velvet from a silver tankard and eating delicious sea food. Very English. They only sell native oysters so you can only have them when they’re in season September - April, but there are many other lovely things to eat in the mean time and great staff.

Arguably one of the best places for lunch in the city. Been visiting for over 20 years, amazing fish restaurant with great service. Be there dead on 12 for best chance yo get a table or, as I prefer, at the bar style area. Highly highly recommend this place, I love it.

Quite possibly the best Dover Sole I have ever had, and the starter of scallops and bacon was just as good. Old world charm. Definitely go there.

Great local fish restaurant, has great busy vibe
E. B.
One of the finest meals to be had in the city. The whole experience was a delight

Not the cheapest but everything super fresh and well cooked limited wine list and don't ask for tea or coffee.

The best seafood I have tasted in a long time! Exquisite fish served in a quirky setting. A very bustling, lively city restaurant serving lunch from Monday to Friday. The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful. Great wine list. Will definitely be heading back for seconds.

Fabulous traditional English fish restaurant. An absolute delight from start to finish.

Feel like you are experiencing some real history here, but the food is completely divine. The staff also make you feel right at home.

Great food...service and staff wonderful...a treat!

Old fashioned Oyster bar and proud off it. Felt like something out the 1950s. Loved the sliced brown bread.

This place is a gem in London. Really classic London, old school. The lunchtime ambience is great, really busy and must reserve, but the menu and the staff are great (I've not been for dinner). Thoroughly recommend the crab starter. I adore the decor here and would go frequently if closer.

This is a great traditional restaurant. Had the prawns and bacon, a gorgeous bottle of wine and the most decadent sticky toffee pudding for dessert. We sat at the counter and were served by the most wonderful friendly red headed waitress. Will definitely be back - need to try the oysters!!!

Really good place for seafood and a chilled drink on a Thursday. The waiter we bad was hilarious albeit a little drunk. The mains were great although mined came out 10 mins later. Not sure on why the waiter adds service automatically to the bill, but can forgive him for the late food and spilling a glass by his attentive service.. Fairly pricey totally but ultimately i would go back.

Legendary place that has, thankfully, the same as it has always been... which is to say that it is great! Nice fish, great staff and superb proper school puddings. What is not to like?

Lovely little restaurant with fantastic fish dishes and sides. It's over 100 years old and feels like you are stepping back in time. Service is impeccable. Highly recommend

London City institution. Reminds me of Peter Luger in Brooklyn with its quirks, knowledgeable staff and quality food. Great prices and surprisingly good wine list. Great Montrachet for decent price. Simple, but quality menu. Sometimes they run out of the specials and appetisers so don’t deliberate too long on what to choose. It’s a tall order given that you can lose an afternoon drinking Velvet (40% Guinness/60% prosecco), at the bar. It’s a great spot. Only open for lunch, but I’ll doubt you will be going after work afterward. It might as well be dinner.

Sweetings is an institution and has been for over a hundred years. Diners sit in alcoves and are served by a personal waiter/waitress. Most of the clientele are regulars.
If you're looking for fast food, modern fusion cuisine or you're in a rush or want to book, don't go there. But if you are looking for a unique experience, excellent quality fish cooked in the traditional way, old fashioned service and puddings, Sweetings is a unique experience. Not cheap, but worth it.
My father took me there when I started working in the City, and I had the privilege of taking my son there too.

Good food, good service, silver tableware. Ideal for showing non-Londoners what the world can be like.
A relic of a bygone age. None of the trendy stuff so popular nowadays. A fun experience, without too much of the stuffiness that usually accompanies places like this.

Myself and insurance broking work colleagues try to as we say, 'do a Sweetings lunch' whenever we are celebrating a good trading month and have done so for many years, why? firstly for the amazing freshest sea food, for example proper essex traditional native oysters, meaty dover sole, east coast crab, skate in black butter etc etc, plus there are often seasonal treats like live razor clams, grilled sardines and scottish queen scallops. Secondly, the waiting and front of house staff are such a delight, many have been working there for years,. the only downside is, the place tends to get rammed , and as you cannot book a table you need to turn up early or late in order to avoid having to wait for a free spot to.
R. T.
Good ol' seafood restaurant. Very old school.

There's a place in every broker's heart for Sweetings. The food is perhaps unremarkable, the bench tables or the bar is a penny more intimate than you'd normally like, the staff are quirky, if a Spanish waiter is ever not quirky... Sweeting is an experience not a lunch. If you don't work in the City maybe you won't get it, it can be boisterous and loud. Unique and never to be repeated. Eat at Sweeting at least once before you die. Oysters. Lobster thermidore, haddock, chip and peas. Rarebit. Black velvet, chablis, vintage port... Tip the staff, then back to banking. Just like the old days. Cheers.

I time capsule! Looks like somewhere Toulouse-Lautrec would have hung out 100 years ago and you'd be right. But I don't know how he got up into those high stools. Food is mainly seafood but good. More hot meals than quick snacks. Visit for the atmosphere.

Eaten there 3 times this year. Fish is always good and it's a very traditional restaurant. Not really suitable for kids, but I would certainly recommend a venue for lunch in the city.
R. V.
Great food, great casual service, must try. Do not expect haute cuisine. The fish is fresh, but the cooking is British.
D. W.
City institution that has been there since the 1830's I think. Not cheap but the fish is great. If you take yourself too seriously or get easily offended when staff don't treat you like royalty it's probably not for you. But then you are missing the point of this place. I like it.

This is a taste of life in the City in Victorian times - great fish and very iconic service. A must on any trip to London! Sometime I just go for the crab sandwich and some Pims mmmmm totally makes my day!
R. F.
Old school fish restaurant. Bygone days service with terrific wine list and first class cooking. No reservations get there half an hour before you would normally go.
