Reviews of The Anchor & Hope
H. S.
A beautiful pub with excellent food. Because of the current regulations, all of the inside space is given over to tables with plenty of space between them. Some nice outdoor tables under an awning. The food is delicious and very seasonal. The staff are very friendly and efficient.

Lovely lovely food… the beef just melted in my mouth…my only grumble that dropped this to a 4 was potentially the portion size (maybe I’m greedy) and the front door being permanently open made the restaurant pretty chilly…
Hadn’t anticipated eating food on a Sunday with my coat on.
T. Z.
Lovely food, great service and good drinks. Highly recommended.

We spent the most brilliant evening at The Anchor and Hope last Friday. Food and service were both excellent, and we really appreciated that they didn't try and turn our table, allowing us a wonderfully relaxed evening to catch up with old friends. The sharing cassoulet and lamb dishes were the definite highlights. The only downsides were waiting a long time at the (empty) bar before any of the staff acknowledged us and allowed us to place a drinks order while we waited for our table to be ready, and being pushed into over ordering mains. The sharing cassoulet and lamb options, plus sides, would have been more than enough between six, but we were encouraged to add far more food than we needed.

Absolutely fabulous Sunday lunch. Party of 4 and three had the slow roast lamb while I had the souffle which was just delicious. Booking essential. Closed Monday and Tuesday.
M. B.
extensive wine list full of bio and natural options. rich adventurous food that pushes you nicely out your comfort zone (calf brains anyone?) and perfect campari palette cleansing sorbet to finish off :) delightful

Really excellent pub food. Excellent quality for a good price. Service was lovely as well.
J. W.
Great food. A lovely Sunday lunch.
M. T.
A beautiful, cosy gastropub serving top quality food which totally transcends the "pub grub" you might come to expect from somewhere with such a rustic feel. Perfect for an occasion dinner, and located on the ever-lively The Cut. Definitely a gem of the area.
D.
Really lovely food at a reasonable price (for London...) and great atmosphere. I'd knock half a star for an overpriced wine list, but doesn't justify a full star. They have good beers & cocktails.
S. G.
Love this place, my go to restaurant everytime I'm south of the river.
A. P.
Heartwarming traditional pub food with a flair. Have been here 3 times now and each time the menu has changed so it really is seasonal! The service is great and prompt. The only reason it is a 4 and not 5 stars is that every time we visit, out of 3 dishes ordered (each time different) - one is great and two are alright. The octopus we ordered last time was quite chewy and not cooked very well. Which is a shame as I think they're very creative with the dishes! Would definitely go again though!
A. L.
Really good atmosphere, arrived quite late, so found a table quite quickly. Had a nice bottle of wine and ran for the train. Only 10 mins max. from Waterloo.
P. A.
Cool pub with awesome food! Everything was delicious!! Even the bread was great! Small menu with great food. Try the starters which are seasonal and you can’t fail with either the fish or lamb dishes! Very popular so come early or with plenty of time!
T. M.
Great Sunday roast with superb sharing options. Our server whose name I'm afraid I can't recall (coaches boxing locally on side) was excellent. Definitely worth a try for a big group Sunday meal. Only slight peeve is the acoustics was really hard for those on the group with subpar hearing, could do with a rug or two to absorb some of the noise. Overal would massively recommend.

The anchor & hope is a fine purveyor of great food and drink. Brilliant gastro pub serving delicious grub. Ducks cheek, tomatoes on toast, chorizo and peppers, beans with anchovy dressing, homemade sourdough. Food that maxes out on flavour and charm. The the whole lamb shoulder (for two) with potato gratin. Meat flaked off the bone, potatoes melted in the mouth. It was rich and deep - finger licking good with fat and salt and butter and all the food stuff. Was so unbelievably full by the end I could barely move. Service was attentive without being overbearing. And the vibe is seriously sick - no worries about being in some flat, dead hotel lobby with waiters watching over your every move. This place buzzes with London energy and candour.
A. S.
Really good food, especially dishes for two. We tried lamb shoulder, and it was very tender and full of flavor.
They don't accept booking for dinner, but have plenty of seating at table of 6.
V. L.
Winning Sunday lunch! My expectations for this place was high after our 5/5 experience at their sister pub the camberwell arms. However this place did not disappoint. The layout is casual and relaxed, a pub with a rustic French style of table service. Bread and butter arrived at our table immediately (star number one). Wine brought to our table eventually (this took a while but the waiter apologised and then took it off our bill? Amazing! (Two. Three stars) Then came the food which was delicious as ever. A really interesting menu beyond a normal pub or gastro pub (star number 4). And finally a little almond slice/tart which rounded off things perfectly (5 stars). They also allowed dogs which in our case is always a bonus. So all in all super food and service - what more could you ask for!
T. M.
Cosy, casual and friendly place. Divided into bar and dining room. Went for dinner (no bookings available)
Menu changes everyday. Cuisine inspired by European and Mediterranean influence.
It was good but it missed the small thing which would have give 5 stars.
Dishes were a bit simple. Feeling of that there is the potential of really innovative food.
Good experience overall and I will definitely come back.
H. C.
Great food. Unfussy but very well executed.
Absolutely heaving on a Saturday night, great to see although it could do with a rug or two to soften the noise slightly!

I'm looking forward to visiting again, after enjoying really decent food here. The staff were friendly and sweet, and the meal was served quickly but not rushed. I loved my meal of dressed romanesco, duck confit with polenta, and the chocolate mousse was just delicious. Best I've ever had. Thank you for a lovely meal.
D. T.
A great bar/ pub and dining room offering diverse beers and lagers along with many wines and all those things that come in smaller glasses. Fierce, friendly staff working very hard to offer up both the drinks and the rather fine looking food created in the open kitchen. Busy place and a most enjoyable experience. Give this place a try whether for a drink or if you fancy something to eat.
S. K.
Wandering around our hotel and found this over crowded restaurant. Lucky the waitress said still have a table for 2.
Eventhough is crowded but service is still fast. Just after we finished our starter, our main dish arrived. Two words: Fresh and delicious. Price also reasonable. Should have come here earlier instead of having same all food at hotel everyday.
G. J.
Had the most delicious T bone last week. Inside was full so we sat outside. Busy, in a good way, great food. Good and friendly service.
F. D. J. M.
Excellent food and value, good honest cooking, relaxed and unpretentious and decent portion sizes. The Anchor and Hope is head and shoulders above most so-called gastropubs!
S. S.
Came here for dinner under fairly severe Covid restrictions, and I was delighted by the top quality food and service despite the constraints to which they were working. We were restricted to a two hour slot which I would typically balk at, but given the every needs to be shut by 10pm, I don't begrudge their effort to squeeze two covers out of the time they had. The food was delicious, particularly the ducks hearts, and the massive lamb shoulder that we shared between three.
N.
Great food, not the typical Sunday roast and not a huge selection for veggies, but the food they did offer was very tasty. Also a good selection of well priced and well mixed cocktails.
S. T.
Really nice atmosphere. We had to wait for a bit until the table was ready but it was pretty quick. We had the most amazing steak pie here!! It was a special last weekend and enjoyed it so much especially crusty bits and tender meats... the quality of food is incredible. Lovely staffs as well. I’d love to visit again.
S. M.
What a great spot close to Waterloo Train Station. Great food at reasonable prices. Wonderful flavours and a nice varied menu. Good wine list and a nice range of beers. One of my favourite spots when visiting London

Amazing food and great service ! Happy that it’s not the typical roast menu on Sundays. The cheesecake was delicious ! Highly recommended.

Nice food but definitely not your traditional fare

Great discovery!
Good food, good service.
Pub with open kitchen.
Sunday lunch unfortunatly without reservation.
Not avaliable sunday roast.

Found this restaurant as we were staying at a nearby hotel....what a find! Great little place, with superb service and excellent food. Would highly recommend it.

Hands down worth every penny and my personal favourite of all the thousands of restaurants in london. There’s nothing like the vibe and menu
Superb environment - fantastic team and wonderful Food

Outstanding food and consistently great. I've been coming here for over 15 years and you know that it will always deliver. Great ingredients cooked intelligently. Every aspiring pub owner should eat here. And the smart ones already did.

Very good. Saddle of hare was very tasty.
a.
Very helpful staff....checking you understand the menu. Food was presented very well and was delicious. I've walked past here many times and is always busy so glad I gave it a try. The only reason for 4 instead of 5 stars in that every now and then, maybe every 15 mins, someone behind the bar would throw glass on a bin which does make an awful loud sound. Otherwise...was very happy and will be back.
D. S.
Very tasty menu that offers interesting food that you don’t see all that often. Would recommend to people looking for higher quality pub food at a higher price. We will be back

Good place not far from Waterloo station.

Food prices for what it is.
Ok for a quick drink and maybe a small starter.

Great service with good lamb roast on Sunday’s. Arrived without reservation and the team was able to fit us in. Nice gastropub
J. P.
Its a lovely pub serving delicious food. The slow cooked lamb neck sharing platter for two was fantastic. Menu favours the meat eaters, but there us always at least 2 fish courses and a vegetarian dish. Glad they are still going and doing their best to comply with ever changing restrictions. The staff are brilliant.
L. P.
I had the veal with crunchy broccoli salad which was delicious. Overall a reasonable price for a main, wine and shared dessert, around £30 each.
E. M.
Excellent weekend away friendly staff very welcoming lovely food lovely rooms
M. H.
Great rotating beer options, brilliant well priced wine list, excellent atmosphere. The food is impressively simple and memorable in equal measure. Delivering a high quality dining experience that is not excessively “try-hard” is something most z1 restaurants cannot do -
These guys nail it better than anywhere else.
Best cabbage in London.
O. O.
This place is a real find, busy and bustling, they don't take reservations so it's not great for bigger groups but the food is off the charts
C. B.
Great food... Great buzz... Busy even early on a Sunday lunchtime
H. R.
One of London's genuine and excellent gastropubs. The inside is like a proper pub, the polar opposite of rank anemic All Bar One style places that aren't like pubs at all. The food is top quality, there's a great wine list with quite a few options by the glass and by the half bottle and they have quality beer on pump. It's the real deal.
r. a.
Excellent many decent place near by including Panda Cup Coffee near by,TAS excellent restaurant and on the side road
London Bike hop. All located next to Southwark Station. Good 3xccllent service.
Also close to Sainsbury's about 3 minutes walk. Nice place and many bars and eateries close by. Check out the cut and Isabella street. As for the bar excellent 😅
B. H.
This should be the prototype for gastro pubs everywhere. The menu is full of exemplary dishes. This is no secret, so it's always packed, but worth the wait.
R. S.
Nice food but definitely not your traditional fare

Whenever I visit London I head straight here to meet up with my best friend for lunch. Food is faultless with a good range of beer and wine on offer. Of course Covid has affected what is available, closing times etc
Hopefully it will all get back to normal in 2021. Forgot to mention the great staff. Hope to see you soon!
L.
Very good food and cooked to an excellent standard. Cuts of meat that aren't the bland or usual menu feature. I had double lamb chops, friends had braised pig cheeks and skirt steak. All cooked to a high quality and reasonably priced too.
Restaurant managing social distancing and hygiene well.
Only issues were: table was uncomfortable - it was quite low but the seats were high, meaning we were all leaning at an awkward angle to eat or talk to each other. Also, it was really loud so we couldn't hear each other.
Restaurant could do with changing the uncomfortable furniture and sorting the acoustics.

Delicious meal and excellent service with a lovely atmosphere close to the old Vic
M. S.
First time back in over ten years. Just as good as ever. Great food. Excellent service.
Y. P.
Great service, interesting menu. Will definitely try to make it back when in the area.

Good food, good ale - what’s not to like?!! 👍👍👍
N. C.
I'd like to challenge anyone to find better food for the prices the Hope and anchor charges
I have been going for many years and have never been disappointed and all the friends and family that I have taken would agree
Top stuff
S. S.
Good menu although it is a bit different so be ready to pick from a different sort of choice. They need to give you half the amount of flour-less chocolate cake as it was far too heavy. I LOVE chocolate cake but I was defeated! Good atmosphere.
G. W.
My only complaints with this place are that you cannot book and, as their food is so wonderful, they may hurry you out on busy nights. However the food is to die for, dog friendly and pleasant atmosphere in that old English pub feel... I miss Great Queen Street hugely, my favourite in London for YEARS , the mother of this place (where you could book but was struck by rent rises). I'm glad this place has similar atmosphere and great food, modern British/French and even better veggie menu. Arrive early, book your table and enjoy their great classic cocktails as very reasonable prices in the bar by the restaurant and treat yourself to a lovely night out without a ridiculous price tag...many places could learn from the GQS group, especially after Andrew Edmund's lost it's way a bit
R. S.
Amazing menu that begs you to stay for dessert - - fantastic staff ready to accommodate you - - arrive early or be prepared to hover in wait for a table :)
K. W.
Always a joy. Lovely place to eat and great service.
R. S.
Modern British done right. Rarely, does one come across a gastropub that does everything right, however, this is the exception. From the friendly welcome on arrival to the completion of the evening with desert - everything was perfect.
L.
My friend and I had been here before, and enjoyed it.
This time, we both ordered the "cracked crab". We were anticipating that it would have been prepared somehow, in addition to having been cooked. They had cracked both sets of the big claws in one place each, but that was it. We had to do the rest ourselves, and it was hard work, even though we are both fairly big, strong guys. Far too much DIY in thirty degree heat, for not much return. When I mentioned the issue, they apologised about the misleading description, and offered us a glass of wine each. In retrospect I feel we would have been justified in sending the food back.
When the bill came, it was lucky my friend checked it, as there was a £40 bottle of wine on it that we never had. Probably an honest mistake, but still. Definitely not their finest performance.
I was leaning towards two stars, but my friend is more generous.
J. G.
Terrific food, and lovely service. Waiters really knew their stuff, on food and wine, and were brilliantly friendly.
E. A.
Great food from a frequently changing menu. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Can get busy at pre-show time for the theaters around. We were asked a couple of times if we were going to a show so I imagine they will make sure you get out on time if you are. Every course we had was really good - the food is a little esoteric/unusual at times but if you're wiling to try something new you will probably really enjoy it
C. W.
Food was good and service was friendly but a bit slow at times. Cokes a bit silly, 200ml bottles. Too pretentious to serve ketchup with chips but they like to save the pennies by not accepting Amex.
M.
Wow, now they know how to cook and serve. Well worth the price. Very friendly.
R. H.
Great pub with really good food. The roast lamb is a classic not to be missed.
J. P.
Well worth a visit. The first impression on entering is that it's a good old fashioned pub, however, the restaurant at the rear is something else entirely. Everyone from the bar staff and waiting staff are cheerful and friendly. The food was excellent and well presented, and there is an excellent wine menu. We would definitely return
E. D.
Really unexpected menu for a pub - in a very good way! Not your usual pub menu choices so if you're looking for somewhere a bit different to eat I'd definitely recommend here. There were four of us eating and we opted to order a selection of the starters and share them between us; tapas style. It was delicious food and the service was excellent. My friend is gluten free and they went out of their way to offer her a wide selection of choice from the menu - in fact I don't think she's ever had so much gluten free choice before. Definitely not your average pub. A bit pricier than regular pub food but definitely worth it. If I'm ever in the area again I would definitely go back.
M. J.
Not a bad place for a drink, a bit too formal for my liking but it got the job done. Food looked fantastic too
A. W.
Really lovely hearty delicious food, had the steak pie for 2 with greens & apple crumble for dessert!
The service was very good, staff were very helpful with the menu and attentive! The ambience is great, feels like home..
Delighted to have found this place so nearby. Will return and recommend to friends!

One of my favourite pub in London and certainly the number 1 around Waterloo. Always crowded, and this happens for a good reason: the food is amazing ans the service is great. You’ll always have to wait until you get a table (that you sometimes have to share with other people), so enjoy a glass or more in the pub before you head to the dining room.
A. M.
always such a treat! excellent food and drinks menu. lovely in summer or winter. hearty recommend!
S. G.
Unfortunately the service was very slow. The space was a bit too noisy to have a comfortable conversation without having to nearly shout. The Sunday roast was just okay: it didn't come with traditional Yorkshire pudding (sourdough bread instead was quite cold actually), neither variety of vegetables to accompany it (just soggy sliced potatoes).
S. I.
All the effort goes into delicious, innovative food and superb service, rather than fancy, opulent decor.
It is almost spit and sawdust decor, but actually, that is its charm, along with interesting, original paintings on the wall.
This place is an absolute gem.
I LOVE it!
S. M.
Lively bustling pub located close to Waterloo Station serving great food with an interesting and inventive menu. Not your usual pub grub. Well priced. Full service bar with a good range of beers and wines. I had the snail wrapped in bacon starter followed by monkfish, mussels and squid. Delicious.
C. T.
Seriously good gastro pub. Delicious food, great service and gun atmosphere. A definitely surprising little gem!!
Cuttlefish and ink risotto was delicious. I'll be back to taste more from the seasonal and varied menu!
S. D.
This restaurant also features an adjoining pub. Due to the overwhelming popularity of this place, we were forced to start our evening in the pub part, waiting for a dinner table. It was quite crowded there and therefore getting very noisy. They had a good variety of beers and ciders though, so the ~1.5 hour wait was not too bad. Arriving at about 7:30, we were eventually brought to our seats at around 9.
The wait was well worth it though, as the food was delicious. As a pre-course they served fresh bread with butter and fresh salt, which was very delicious. Some of the dishes had run out by the time we could order, but we had an excellent off-menu rabbit in exchange, which came with chips. You could choose from about 5 different sides, all freshly prepared and very tasty (we went for lentils and mixed greens). The restaurant is said to be a spin-off of St. John's and this is well noticeable from the food quality.
B. c.
Love the food and service in this place. One of my favourite restaurants
R. S.
Great eclectic British food. I'd probably stick to the good beer next time as wine makes it quite expensive (who would have known!)
W. N.
Good quality British food, friendly staff!
D. M.
I come back here again and again. Always something delicious and interesting to try, always using seasonal produce. It has a really nice atmosphere too - relaxed as it's in a pub, but it still feels special to come here - mostly because the food is always excellent. It can get quite busy and hectic at times, but the staff are really friendly and helpful. Nice cocktails too!
L. P.
Good selection of wine, beer and food. Somewhat pricey. Well located, a stone's throw from Southwark tube. They have seating outdoors and it's a good place to spend a sunny weekend afternoon, as the street traffic is not too busy. Wait staff were courteous and attentive. Barmen less so.
J. M.
Really good quality food that works best when you share. Service was super friendly and pretty decent value. Highly recommend the lambs neck. Only negative is your can't seem to book a table too easily
J. S.
This place is great... surprisingly good food for a "pub". 7-hour lamb shoulder is awesome if you can find 2 others to share with. Their menu is changing frequently and they don't take reservations so get there around 5:15 to make sure you get on the list (start serving food at 6).

service: B+

Sophisticated and simple at the same time. Always great choice of lovely food service by nice staff.
Love it
A. L.
Nice little restaurant with beer attached. Very popular with the theatre folk.
M. E. O.
Excellent for a Sunday lunch. The menu changes each week and the food is always very good. Beer selection is not very extensive.
Good to make a booking ahead.
J. D.
Very good. Saddle of hare was very tasty.
E. C.
Great pub for drinking with a few sidewalk tables. It's dark and cramped inside and they've got plenty of beer and at least one cider. The food selection didn't sound particularly appetizing. Go get drunk here, pints of Guinness aren't too expensive and it's really close to the tube.
J. A.
Great gastro pub with excellent food. The food changes every day based on what's best on the market and Belstone me, it pays. Every time I go there I get a different experience, all with that British - French - Mediterranean foundation. They especially excel at cuts and dishes that other restaurants would stay away, if you see pig cheeks, livers or the like, go for it.
E. M.
They lose a point for no decaff coffee. No decaff coffee! Would have been a five. If this is a gastro pub, I wish there were many more. The four of us all loved our food and there were many interesting and unusual choices such as ox tongue, maccu and cod tongues - plus more usual choices! Star dish for me was the pear and almond tart with clotted cream - I've been trying to work out how to make that gorgeous rich pastry . So glad to have found this place, I highly recommend it.
F. B.
Fantastic food - the steak, the parmesan pumpkin chestnut tart and cauliflower soup were all incredible! Will definitely be coming back next time we're in London. Service was absolutely brilliant, from all the staff - great job!
J. H.
If you don't mind your dining experience to be noisy, lively and a little chaotic then this place is for you. Interesting menu choices. And the food was really very good.
Y. S.
This is the BEST gastropub in London, and I'm not the only one who claims this. Just google it! The pub itself is very casual and fun with great wines and beer on offer, but the restaurant section has a daily menu that just can't be beat in taste or value. I love their food so much that I had my birthday dinner with close friends there. They don't allow reservations so make sure you get there as early as possible and put your name on the list. It'll be worth the wait.
J. C.
This place is a favourite. Great food, but extremely friendly people and an unstuffy environment go a long way. Fantastic little wine list too, heavy on organic/natural producers. The lamb is a must, at least once!
r. r.
Great food with a difference. Not classic Sunday roast but plenty of tasty choices e.g. slow roast pigs cheek, roast neck of lamb all with perfectly cooked fresh vegetables. Lovely relaxed atmosphere, bare scrubbed tables, helpful friendly staff
H. D.
The best pub food i have ever tried in London! There are also good selections of wines and beers. The staff is very friendly. There may be a small wait for eating, but it is always possible to grab a small beer in the next room
In the meantime.
D. A.
Decor a bit basic, but good buzz and busy-but-laid-back atmosphere. No bookings but didn't have to wait too long for a table, and the bar kept us distracted. Food was bloody brilliant! Incredible roast pigeon, and the best sorbet I think I've ever had (blood orange). Prices high-ish but not bad for a central London gastropub with a reputation.
A. W.
One of my favorite places to eat in London. Great food for a reasonable price. Also far enough away from the Southbank that tourists don't really know about it. The no reservation policy means you have to just relax and enjoy a drink after work.
M. G.
I really like Anchor and Hope. It's a great gastropub with excellent food. It can get pretty busy, so get there early. They have an good selection of beers and also a decent enough wine list, but it's the food that's most impressive. Definitely a top choice for this area of you are looking for a decent meal.
S. M.
A great institution - one of the first gastropubs I think. I've eaten here seven or eight times. The first was definitely a stunning seven stars - then rather elusively never quite up to that mark! An adventurous menu by pub standards, generally including dishes that are traditional but less familiar. A very pleasant vibe; service good and well-informed. No reservations (?not sure about Sundays though) which means you have to get there early or time it when a wave of punters are leaving. Good beer. But not cheap!
L. C.
Food was excellent, couldn't fault the rib of beef. Wait was fine and the lady with the clipboard friendly and informative.
However the waiting staff were abysmal. Plates were slammed down with the waitress running off before we could ask for anything. Sat with empty plates and empty wine, trying in vain to get the attention of someone to provide more wine or dessert. Felt like we were really putting them out. That is until the time for tipping when they couldn't be friendlier as they passed the machine asking if we'd like to add a tip.
V. L.
This is a slightly quieter place to drink on, The Cut than most of the local boozers probably because of the gastro pub vibe. We arrived relatively late but we're still able to get two seats at the bar as it was far less full than the rather 'meh' pubs nearby. Service was quick and there is a reasonable selection of beers - Praha in this case.
B. M.
Where shall I start... The
Anchor and Hope is a good gastropub located near Waterloo (a big, popular train station that is also named after Waterloo, Belgium, where Nepolean had his last defeat.) It is a charming, Independent pub. The great thing about Independent pubs is that they serve more than one type of Beer 🍺, since no Brewery owns it. The service is great! The waitresses seem like they really like their job. The food is good. The smoke salmon was ok, and they serve non alcoholic Fentimans Ginger Beer (The Fentimans is much better than the Canada dry, trust me.) The atmosphere is good, the noise is Moderate (for a pub😏.) The lighting is good, not too light, not too dark. Pretty popular place, you may want to reserve a table. Thanks for reading my review, and good luck finding a review that is not written by a Local Guide.

I am here in London for holidays. My family and I got an apartment near this restaurant, so we went there for dinner.
We got to the restaurant around 7:30 PM, defnetly a bad time. I would recommend to get there around 6:30 - 6:45, not later than 7:00, because we had to wait for about one and a half hour before we got a table.
The style of the restaurant / pub is very nice, it has a nice, rustical atmosphere. It is pretty loud tough.
The restaurant is seperated into two parts by a curtain. The one part is a pub, the other part the restaurant.
The food was really, really good. First we got a crab breath, later a fantastic 7-hour-cooked lamb shoulder. The crab breath has a really strong crab taste. That's really nice if you like it, for me it was too intense. The lamb shoulder was really good. The meat had a nice taste, and it was really soft and delicate.
The service was friendly, the food was served quite fast, although there were a lot of people in the restaurant.
I personally really like the restaurant. It looks nice, the food is very good and the service is nice. If you want to drink something with your colleagues, eat something with your family or friends or just want to hang out, I would really recommend "The Anchor & Hope".
Service: 8/10
Food: 9/10
Value: 6/10
Design: 10/10
Atmosphere: 9/10
8.5 of 10 points
PS: If you can find 3-5 people to eat with you, order a 7-hour-cooked lamb shoulder

Doesn't look much from outside......nice ambience inside and food is really good. Some portions a little small, but overall a lovely meal.
Will go back for sure.....but won't be having the cheese board (nice but not worth £12).
J. L.
Excellent food, but arrive early for dinner as you can't book. If you can handle that uncertainty, you'll have an excellent meal of interesting French and British influenced dishes, with a focus on game, traditional, peasant cuts of meat and seafood.
C. M.
I'm unsure as to why this is place is referred to as a pub? It only has tables laid out in a dining format and seems to be all about the food. We were given a table for an hour and a half so there was definitely a rushed feel about our Sunday lunch. And considering I thought you couldn't book I'm not sure why the hour and a half restriction?
Food was very nice. Definitely alternative though; there is no fish&chips, burgers or traditional Sunday roast on this menu.
I couldn't fault the food or the service but I left not being sure if I would go back again.
J. S.
Disappointing. A fairly decent menu and good ingredients will almost always result in some good food. However, this was offset by the appauling service. Staff either ignored people or came across like it was too much effort to host. The prices would be ok if not for this. I would strongly recommend people to go elsewhere if they want value for money. This pub is obviously milking the theatre crowd and I'd question their ability to stay running without them.
K. P. (.
Came here around 12.30pm for a Sunday roast when my family from overseas were visiting, but shockingly the roast cost £35/person and wasn't served till 2.30pm! We stayed for a drink then went in search of somewhere else. The bar tenders here were nice enough, but not friendly enough to sway our opinion that we should stick around for the roast. The seats were ok, but nothing you'd want to hang around on - all basic wooden tables and chairs. (And our table was wobbly! This place does have a lot of good reviews, so I may have gone on an off-day.
C. B.
Have always really liked this place. Great atmosphere and service. Food is not your typical gastrobub by any stretch, and is always interesting. If anything I wish the menu had slightly (slightly) more variety.
T. T.
I'm very fond of this pub and have always been well looked after. Food is consistently great, excellent wine list and the cocktails are good vfm, if only they were a little longer..
Thoroughly recommend.
S. L. S.
The Anchor & Hope is a jewel and it is so good to see it reopen after lockdown. The food is always superb, the menu interesting , my only problem being that I invariably want to order everything on it.
S. v. d. B.
About 6 mins walk from Waterloo station so you can be out of the madness of the in station bars. Pretty standard pub bench seating outside on the street, which is great for people watching. The bar tenders looked tired and bored, but they certainly got the job done as the wait for drinks was short. A stack of chairs outside the rest room would make it difficult for wheelchairs. I hear the food is great although haven't eaten there myself.
S. J.
Summary: Cute gastro pub really close to the station with good food (1 AA Rosette actually!)
Decor: wooden, and old. Not my taste but others will like it.
Food: very very good, probably the best in the cut area. They have an AA rosette at time of writing. Unfortunately due to that they charge quite a lot for rather small portions - my main gripe about this place. They rotate the menu everyday but I greatly recommend their steaks.
Staff: Friendly but lacking in organisation. No one realises if you've just walked through the door for example.
J. C.
Lovely pub in Waterloo for beers and food. Tables can’t be booked so get there early. Very decent English fare served by highly knowledgeable and engaging staff.
R. W.
Good food and okay service in the restaurant. To be fair, the restaurant was worth the hassle with the bar. The bar staff are sloppy and cannot take an order unless you repeat yourself 3 times. Even then you then need to chase them for the item they missed, that is also when they have it in stock. I get the feeling that this place is tired - mostly because they cannot be bothered to even leave a message on their telephone with their opening times - particularly relevant over Christmas.
B. N.
Really nice meal, the pork neck fillet was great but the mushroom soup was the surprise star. Venison curry was a bit bland in comparison though.
J. P.
Great ambiance, exceptional gastropub fayre and decent range of beers. Daily changing seasonal menu and aperitives. No reservations so get there early or be prepared to grab a drink and wait in the pub. Good for pretheatre.
P. K.
The food for Sunday Lunch is always excellent. It can get quite noisy, but is not normally too bad. Definitely one to go for if you want a great meal on a Sunday! Book ahead!
R. N.
It's been a few years since my last visit, but still a great place. Really interesting menu and great service. The standard is very high and represents good value for money.
T. J. E.
Might be the best french fries (chips) I ever had. The food is inventive and economical. The beers ales available were top-notch and the service was easy and pleasant.
E. R.
Great food. Regularly changing menu. Go when your hungry!
Great wine list and good drinks plus friendly staff make this a great place.
J. a. g. o. d. b. f.
Great food and a trendy pub. Did not have a reservation but the wait was not bad despite a busy Sunday afternoon.
Staff were also relaxed with customer banters and conversations. Recommend!
M. S.
The last few times I've been here there's been no wait (they don't take reservations), which is just amazing for this place. Brilliant British food, cosy room and great service. The large sharing dishes in particular are fun, e.g. lamb shoulder for 3, beef/pork for 4 etc.
C. H.
Great wholesome UK pub food, the gnoochi was amazing 👌💕
G. B.
Lovely pub, delisious food. Quite posh!
S. B.
Brilliant food and service and atmosphere as always
D. B.
We had the Goose dinner on Monday to celebrate the holiday season. Absolutely amazing. More food than we could eat and of the highest quality. Definitely going to be a Christmas tradition to do this every year.
R. W.
Second visit here and I can't see any of the faults that other people mention. Staff are attentive and helpful and the food is excellent. Only downside for me is the beer selection. Though there are several bottled and cask beers, it lacks a few local craft ales.
s. p.
Its,s a nice place and so very popular.Interesting Menu.Kinda traditional British Fare mixed in with some Mediterranean dishes..I guess it's nice to have the choice.Probably would have given 5 stars but they do Octopus Salad, which I know is a personal thing , but I wouldn't even want to look at it, let alone eat it!!!🐙
M. C.
This is a great gastropub. There is an area where you can have pre drinks before sitting down to have your meal. They generally don't take reservations so you have ti bit in the bar area and wait.
Once seated the service was great, they staff were all very friendly and informative of the dishes.
The food here was brilliant I couldn't fault it. Its british food but done well.
Defiantly would recommend this place.
C. G.
Maybe my favourite gastropub in London. Truly superb rustic cookery. Great sharing items like whole roast leg of lamb or cassoulets frequent the menu. Enjoyed with one of their cask ales. Delicious!
B. P. (.
Beware of the delicious food! Here I've eaten one of the best soufflé I've ever had!
P. M. C.
Very nice pub and great scotch eggs! A bit too busy on Friday though. I didn't try the restaurant but it looked very good. Staff was lovely.
B. H.
Stunning fusion of cosy, relaxed pub atmosphere with a top quality menu of hearty British crowdpleasers. The sharing pies are works of art, and everyone leaves here satisfied. The staff are friendly and very knowledgeable.
J. J. S.
Great menu, shame half of it was gone by the time we got a table at 9 despite having arrived at 7 and being told we would get a table in an hour.
The food was great, lamb, beef, all very well prepared. The staff were very friendly as well.
J. H.
It's effectively St. John in gastropub format. Similarly meat heavy menu, which isn't really ideal for me, although I suppose the vegetarian option on the night I went (ratatouille with coco beans) wasn't bad. They don't seem to have a website, and apparently the menu changes frequently, so it's somewhat pot luck what you're going to end up with.
The main downside was the wait (they don't take reservations in the week) - we got there at 7pm on a Tuesday, were told it would be an hour wait for a table, but didn't actually get a table until around 9pm, and it was closer to 10 before we actually started eating. The bar area where we waited was really noisy too, I found it a bit difficult to have a conversation.
On the plus side they did serve Negronis at the bar which were small but reasonably priced (£6), and the staff were all quite pleasant.
V. C.
Great, earthy yet inventive menu, a mix of British and Mediterranean. No frills environment where the food is the star. Well priced. Never had a duff meal here.
A. M.
This is the type of place that most people try to keep a secret, it's a hidden gem in terms of wider London. But those who love the South Bank frequent this place often, because the food is reliably good and it has such a good atmosphere. My friends and I reserve it for an annual trip for a mate's birthday as it's become kind of special.
But if your parents are in town and you fancy an early bite, head over there for 6pm to have a pre-drink and put your name down for a table. Share a roast shoulder of lamb, too good to be true!
D. C.
Really nice food here served by friendly staff. I was brave and had the 'Roman Tripe'... It was delicious! The rest of the menu isn't as out there but it all looks very nice. I'll be going back.
P. R.
I love the menu here. Changing all the time. Excellent and different options. Everything I had here is delicious and tastes like proper homemade food. Staff is very friendly and the service is quick.
J. R.
Solid neighborhood bar with shared seating in spots and classics at the bar. They seem to have a more private back room for food and beverage.
Always feel free to reach out to me on Twitter @joerazz
D. S.
Wide food selection. Lots of booze used, but I don't do booze. Good waiter checked with chef, and I ended up having a grand pork roast Sunday lunch followed by Apple and hazelnut crumble 😋
S. C.
Delicious food, very welcoming staff. Nice atmosphere
J. H.
Cosy and busy pub. With interesting food mix and great staff members. Food was delicious and really enjoyed our evening meal. Will definitely return.
H. K.
Simple delicious food and well kept ales. Great service and as it doesn’t take bookings, it’s great for last minute plans as long as you’ve got the time
L. M.
The fish and duck were fresh and melting in the mouth. Kind service. Outside looks like a traditional pub and you'd not expect a rich food menu and expensive dishes.
P. D.
Absolutely brilliant food. Perfect pre-theatre haunt, great service and wine. Modern farmhouse cuisine. Among the best! A star in a sea of mediocrity.
G. S.
Utterly awesome steak and ale pie for two to share...
r.
We found this pub less than welcoming. Took ages to get a drink and the prices were ridiculous. Furniture was laid out in no sensible order. Bizarre place all told.
B. W.
I hadn't expected much from this place because it was fairly far from the larger neighborhoods, but the food here was surprisingly good with a lot of things you wouldn't expect like a snail salad. It's definitely worth a stop if you're nearby and want to grab a bite and a pint.
R. A.
One of my favourite restaurants in London. Never less than astonishingly good food. If they have joints of meat to share, I highly recommend you try them.
O. M.
Good food but mediocre service
R. C.
Great atmosphere and friendly staff
S.
We accidentally stumbled upon this gastro pub yesterday. Our intention was to find a sunday roast since another pub was closed. They found us seats by the window but everything was fully reserved. We started off with a freebie bread basket, then indulged ourselves with roast beef and deer meat. I loved how they cooked the cabbage, simple and tasty. My beef was cooked perfectly, husband's deer meat dish made him jolly. I learned that their beef is sourced from Yorkshire, all grass fed like most beef in the UK. If you do go there, please make a reservation.
C. F.
Good place for a drink after the theatre or dinner before. Popular but not packed. Relaxed. Good beer. Not as orange as picture suggests.
m. v.
If you are going to eat in Gasto pub in london eat here. By far the best food found in any pub in london. I have eaten here many times for a different occasions and all ways walked away very satisfied. They don’t pretend to be anything else but great pub with good understanding of service and food it takes to be one. Well done to you anchor & hope
S. F.
Great food! The duck and the ham loin were delicious. Reasons it s not a 5* is the the limited menu options and the service could have been better/politer.
S. G.
Classic gastro that gets the job done. Service very good. Food very dependable. rPerhaps a little too cozy on the seating front, but heck, real estate's pretty pricey around here, so it's understandable.
M. D.
Nice enough interior, though sadly, as a Young's pub, the beer range is limited and dull, and at £6 gor a pint of Estrella - objectionable. Good place to meet at to arrange to go somewhere else.
r. b.
Always great quality. It's great in the cold weather for fantastic comfort food but also has great fresh choices in the summer. No bookings so get in early
R. B.
Superb food - a fantastic gastropub. The bar area gets very busy weekdays after 17:00 so would avoid then if you’re not eating in the restaurant or willing to fight for a table.
D. S.
The menu trends to be heavy on game and unless your there early expect half of it to be crossed out. That said it's an interesting menu that changes regularly.
If you're heading to the Old or Young Vic it's here or the Waterloo Bar and Kitchen.
T. F.
The chalk board menu for 20.08.10 had some very interesting choices. Started with the terrific warm snail and bacon salad. The most intriguing item on the menu for me was the roasted grouse, just a few days into the season. An unbelievably moist bird with no gamey taste and perfectly prepared. Finished with a trio of UK cheeses that capped off a truly special meal. Top notch Gastropub!
M. R.
Fantastic gastropub. Had the most amazing dinner. The food was excellent and really worth the price. Fantastic service too, we will definitely go back.
A. B.
Good atmosphere, good selection of wines and beers, prices were as expected. If you just want to share a bottle of wine in an old fashioned setting, this is the place to go.
F.
Excellent dinning with a nice accompanying pub. Food is delicious and we'll presented. The staff is very friendly.
J. N.
Gastropub with a great menu. Order the lamb, huge portion. The beer options were a bit limited though. Highly recommend a pint of St Austell's Tribute.
J. W.
Tasty beer, friendly staff. We didn't eat but the food looked good. They did charge £2 for bottle of tap water which is why it didn't get 5*
P. M.
We have been here many times and always love it. The menu changes all the time. The staff is amazing, the place is busy, the door exceptional.
K. K.
Amazing place for dinner. The food is absolutely delicious. The wait staff was incredibly friendly as well. I'd be happy to visit again!
A. G.
Nice venue, very small with a small bar but toilets very clean and pleasant staff. Friendly atmosphere. It looks crowded in a good way
J. C.
Sunday lunch was overwhelmingly average - maybe that was just the chicken as the place was packed to the rafters on a Sunday afternoon around 3. One of London's first Gastropub - pleasant enough and handy for the nearby theatre.
J. O.
Good food and nice people serving. Accommodated a group of 10 of us without a problem. Maybe a little loud, they could do with some sound baffles.
P. J.
Excellent gastro pub with changing menu and long wine list. Good couple of veggie options when we went and the deserts were delicious...
P.
The original and still best London gastropub. Lovely, fresh, tasty food. Great as a small plates sharing experience with a group of friends.
S. c.
Wow, this place punches well above its weight. Ignore pub grub and go for the tomato on toast
J. S.
lovely food mid range prices and great service too whole heartedly recommended try to book ahead if you can. very popular
J. H.
I'm pretty sure this is the best place to go in Waterloo. Great beers and even better food. And as a tip, if you're offered to sit on the shared table then do, no-one else does!
J. H.
Loved it, fashionably rustic, food absolutely gorgeous, would go again for the pie made with suet.......just like mum used to make!
p. c.
Beautiful roast beef, service great.
D. L.
Still the gastropub that other gastropubs look up to. What's the secret? Really top- notch ingredients, a menu that changes with the seasons, a strong team in the kitchen, and friendly, bustling atmosphere
E. P.
Good grub. Was very busy due to theatre goers but they all filtered out fairly quickly around 7/7.30.
M.
Very rich but good quality gastro pub food with a central London price tag. No booking but the staff are helpful and try to accommodate you.
S. M.
The staff were on the mark and my wife had a good meal . But I was not happy with mine ,probably my own fault ,I made a bad choice.
A. M.
This is not a beer pub, but it is an excellent food pub.
S. E.
Fabulous food and service... traditional, old school setting - the broccoli with hot anchovy sauce was amazing.
S. E.
Splendid food. Great environment. I had not been for a couple of years an was reminded how great it was. Lovely.
S. J.
Great pub, fantastic staff. Outside seating. One complaint, poor cider selection, no drapht and one small bottled 😣
P.
Eaten in here several time and the food has always been great. You don't get the normal burger and chips in here, the menu is constantly changing and is always good.
D. C.
Superb service and delicious food. Rarely does one feel so looked after for this price The place has a wonderful buzz to it.
J. J.
The food here is incredible. Not your typical pub grub - very sophisticated home style cooking!
T. S. W.
Came here on Christmas so my judgement is clouded and my memory hazy. Expensive and bad tall chairs from memory, but nice and old fashioned, in a good way. I had a lovely time and that wasn’t just because of my company.
Good if you’re tall.
T. F.
Great beer and a terrific Sunday lunch. All served by pleasant friendly staff
R. R.
Beautiful food - moules and warm burrata are 👌 and delicious wine. Great, friendly service too.
M. A.
Amazing English Food.
Main courses are exquisite and deserts are as intense as they get.
If you are wondering about true modern english food, comes here and you will wandered.
J. L.
Excellent food and staff at this well established venue. On a busy Saturday the staff were happy for us to eat at the bar.
T. M.
Fantastic pub focused on good food. Snail and bacon salad was excellent. Definitely worth the stop if you're in the area for the evening.
K. B.
Went for the food, stayed for the food. Really good quality food, well presented and served. Not really a place for the vegetarians, but for a carnivore like me it was ideal.
P. R.
Good place. Wish they had a few more beers, but the food is nice and service is very good.
K. N.
Nice pub, plenty of tables plus beer from some local breweries. Also, the staff is attentive and friendly.
V. B.
Lovely food and menu. Service was great. Only downside is that they close early at weekends.
J. D.
Great changing menu, wine list and beer selection. An all-round great pub.
V. F.
The smell of the kitchen goes around all the pub/restaurant. All the rest is ok, and the food is just above the average.
P. N.
Great food and venue, weirdly sarcastic waiter. I guess if that makes his shift go easier, good for him.
N. W.
The food and beer here is always top notch. The service whilst friendly can be a bit slap dash and indifferent.
J. M.
Good food but certainly not child friendly. Good beer. Long wait for service, which comes without the smile.
B. D.
The food here is fantastic. Go and eat there.
Luscombe cider in bottles is always welcome and delicious :)
A. W.
Great pub food in a traditional pub atmosphere...get one of the snugs at the back if you can. Good range of beers on tap.
C. C.
Great place for food. You can book if you are a large party but just walk in off the street for fantastic food.
E.
Had a lovely roast leg of lamb which is for 3 to Share, with dahphinoise potatoes. Nice ambience and good food
M. E.
Absolutely fantastic menu, always a little surprise to make your mouth water when reading the menu, and always tip top, informal, friendly service!
C. B.
Nice pub, but no WiFi do if you're planning to go there to work online you won't be able to.
T. S.
Loved the Hake. Great food and the waiters were lovely but just seemed a bit stressed at how busy it was.
S. K.
Great lunch great service - a must - real food cooked with heart and brains. The drinks something for everyone.
e. t.
Very nice pub near Southwark tube station. Nice food selection, portions on the small side but very tasty, a bit pricy. Nice atmosphere
S. B.
Still great after many years. Consistently delicious food. Focuses on good quality ingredients. Never disappoints.
T. A.
Excellent food and a great location with a dearth of other good pubs makes this one of the best options in the Waterloo area
A. H.
Great food and interesting menu. It was quite difficult to get the waiter's attention though
R. W.
Nice enough pub for a quick drink on the way home. Close to Waterloo and Southwark. Benches outside are nice on a sunny day.
D. H.
Really knowledgeable server on what's good. Great food and great service.
G. S.
Nice menu, good food and service but slightly a bit too noisy to have a good conversation with your friends.
2. W. H.
Brilliant local gastro pub with excellent sharing options. Good for date night or a pre-theatre dinner.
S. J. P.
Lovely Friday evening dinner experience with a good friend. Busy environment. Good vibe. Quality wine.
M. J.
Great atmosphere, food, service. Brought wife and four young sons here for lunch and we enjoyed it.
D. T.
Food here is brilliant and an extensive wine menu.
B. D.
Great food and service
p. y.
Great food. Great service. What more could you want from a serious gastropub?
I.
Food was amazing, service friendly and efficient. Very nice place for a dinner or to just grab a beer after work
R. N.
Fantastic food good menu reasonable price definitely be back.
Z. E.
Great place to have a quiet read, drink, smoke outside weather permitting and people watch Fav time mid late afternoons. Read others for food reviews and later
A. B.
Fantastic food, nice selection of wine by carafe, excellent service, never felt rushed which was nice, highly recommended
L. P.
Great food, reasonable prices, friendly staff. A bit loud inside, but that's what happens when a place is good and busy!
S. O.
Yet again, fantastic attentive service together with the most beautiful meal. The shoulder of lamb is a must everytime. Many, many thanks.
N. H.
Amazingly well made food and a passionate lady as a host and to tell you all about the dish ... Saturday seems the perfect day to go as it is less crowdy
S. H.
Sadly a shadow of its former self. Nothing terrible, but nothing inspiring either; and nothing you couldn't do at home.
The whole experience is complicated by the slightly haughty booking rules, which do not befit a venue of this now unremarkable stature.
A. G.
Fantastic food, great service and one hell of a wine list! Highly recommended!
M. M.
Standard Pub Central London. Bar service is pretty quick. Also has a restaurant attached but didnt eat there
M. H.
Decent pub but when it's crowded it's an uncomfortable experience. Seems to be a lot of people say at the bar getting in the way.
J. B.
Excellent food. Looks like an old pub, but it surprisingly good. Well worth a visit
R. D.
Love it. One of the best restaurant I've been to in London.
Very annoyingly you can't book a table.
L. G.
Lovely British gastropub with a fresh, seasonal menu, great beer and wine selection and a nice atmosphere.
C. C.
Great service and delicious food every time. One of my favourite places to eat
D. O.
Food was excellent however service was pretty slow. We waited approx 30 mins between our starter and mains.
J. M.
Had a Sunday roast here. Beef with all the trimmings! It was raining hard outside and the staff made us very very welcome.
T. T.
Amazing food, friendly service, cosy setting. Favourite gastropub near the river.
T. T.
Excellent food, slow roast lamb is particularly good! Can't book so get there early!
K. F.
Very good surprise. The fish is very fresh and the prices are for once reasonable. Excellent place to know near Waterloo
R. S.
Assured cooking, brilliant service. Been eating here for 10+ years - always a pleasure.
A. M.
I loved the rabbit, but I'm not sure it was worth the 2 hour wait. Better to visit at a time when it is less crowded. But definitely worth a visit.
T. H. R.
Best pub food I´ve had in London and really professional and attentive staff.
M. J.
Seriously tasty food. Went for the set menu Sunday lunchtime. Good local real ales
e. b.
The food was amazing. We had a lamb roast for 3.

Super busy!!! But they handled it like champs!!!! The roast was great and the risotto was even better

Lovely and interesting menu, staff joyful, what else could you want?!

J. H.
A bit noisy early on but Great food, great staff and a custard tart to die for
P. B.
The food here is excellent, great atmosphere, perfect for a Sunday lunch catch up.
b. m.
Stunning sun day lunch whilst you wait for the train, we got lucky but I'd book in advance in future
b. w.
Limited vegetarian choice, not the quickest service, but very nice pub and very good food.
J. R.
Very popular great staff food was fine but not special.
I. P.
Super food very inspired and lovely staff who did very well at our event
M.
A bit noisy, but excellent food at shared tables.
I. G.
Great atmosphere friendly staff and better than your normal gastro pub food
C. N.
Food and drinks are good but there is an attitude from one of the older barstaff woman there that brings the whole vibe down.
M. O.
Great Food, very good service and a fantastic atmosphere....highly recommend this pub.
C.
Good food, not British, entirely continental. Good choice of drinks. Recommended.

Brilliant food and good beer. I love this place.

A shabby pub that delivers good quality food. Impressed by the flavour, the choice and the changing menu
I. H.
Go early if you want a table, you may need to share, order from whatever is on the blackboard and leave satisfied. Spot on.
R. H.
Superb british food. Great atmosphere. Booking a must.
A. W.
Amazing food and good wine. Gets crowded though... Get there early.
e. v.
Great food and service, and wide selection of wines/sherry!
N. M.
Always loved the food. Yes, the waits are long. And yes, they're worth it
M. P.
Interestingly different pub restaurant. It wasn't to our traditional taste but it was a treat to see a significantly different menu.
R. B.
very quick service, great food. surprised by what seemed to be a corner pub
C. T.
Love the pub, local and tourism all in one, the artwork isn't bad either.
L. -. S.
Nice atmosphere, great Thai food, service is extremely fast and convenient for lunch.
L. D.
Good food, great wine, helpful and chatty staff...
Will be back here again.....
H. F.
Great pub food and beer. Amazingly nice staff. :)

Impressive menu with friendly service. I wish I had more time to work through everything on the menu.
T. S.
Good food, nice drinks, friendly people - too loud...

Great menu at reasonable prices. Very different from the usual.
R. M.
