Reviews of The Coal Shed
M. S.
Friendly and helpful staff, top service with a smile. Steak was brilliant, we ordered a massive porterhouse to share. Good starter of oysters. And sides too were good.
Great meal with friends, pricey meal but I thought it was worth it for the quality of service and food.
Thank you Coal Shed staff!
J. B.
We booked this meal after eating in the Coal Shed in Brighton, was absolutely amazing 10/10 I recommend. The London branch does not disappoint.
What we ordered:
4 cocktails
2 person sharing Sunday roast
2 chocolate brownies with poached pear
The Sunday roast was just as good as the one in Brighton (Best ever) see description: the sirloin steak was definitely the best I've ever had, de-throning The Ram in Hammersmith, and massively outdoing Marco Pierre Steakhouse that we had recently as a wedding present.
The roast is served in a giant cast iron pan with honey glazed carrots, beef dripping roast potatoes, the beef, and Yorkshire puddings on top, and then 2 small pots of cauli cheese and buttered(?) cabbage, and we got 2 pots of gravy which another waitress joked was rare, absolutely delicious, portion sizes were great and the presentation was top notch, a feast for the eyes!
The brownies were perfection, I hate when brownies are served piping hot with ice cream and it just melts really quick and you don't have enough ice cream - not the case here, it was warm, the ice cream was great and you had enough, making the brownie nice and chewy too. The poached pear was a nice addition, you don't get that everywhere and is a bit of a palette cleanser between bites.
The cocktails were small but well made and not watered down at all, full of flavour. I can't remember what I had but one was quite fruity and the other an apple and ginger flavour.
The staff were really nice, we didn't feel badgered or pressured to rush, nor did we feel abandoned at all, just the right amount of service!
Our meal was about £117 with service charge, definitely worth it.
Can't recommend enough!

Fantastic service, with a lovely atmosphere. The food was also delicious, the meat was tender, falling off the bone and the king prawns were perfection. cannot fault it! Thank you.

The positives:
Location : excellent location and if you are sitting outside then the fountain makes it even better
Staff : they were friendly and courteous.
Could Improve:
Food : we ordered the below
1. kids Fish and chips : the Chips were good , but the fish was tiny piece. Kids don’t understand fine dining portions .
2. Pan fried cod Fish : we expected the fish to be a bit more crispier being Pan fried also could do with a bit more seasoning . This is after having pan fried fish in many restaurants including that of Rick Stein . The peas and other sauces were really good though
3.Lamb Rump: This was probably the only dish , which was worth the visit . The sauces etc were again really good and I did enjoy the lamb.

Have just been to this restaurant for the first time. It is just the best ever. The food is delicious, we had 4 starters of prawns, scallops, beef cheeks and the burrata followed by the sirloin steak and turbot with sides of chips and onion rings. The food was simply delicious. The staff were engaging and fun (particularly Kay) and the head chef Sam was a delight to meet xx
We will definitely be recommending the restaurant and will look forward to coming back soon.

Really great experience. Great selection, very well prepared. The service was friendly and efficient. The quality could not be faulted!

Me and my daughter came here for lunch, they've got a kids menu which was nice for her to be catered and they treated her very kindly, the staff were lovely. The steak was great and the Mac and cheese was the best if had in a while. The croquettes were a bit dry though. The pudding was lovey and refreshing in this heat after all that meat. Looking forward to visiting again as it's a nice place to sit outside.

Amazing. We was early and our table was already ready for us. Served water straight away. All staff were polite, tidy, attentive. The manager even helped with a blister on my foot and provided a plaster for me.
The food was excellent! Better than we hoped for.
l. C.
Beautiful restaurant, very nice service
And the food oh my word the best👌👌
C. S.
All I can say is wow!!! Absolutely amazing place and the Sunday dinner was the best I've ever had!!! Staff are great to. Definitely be back when we come back to London

Lovely restaurant but needs to work on its menu for people with intolerances. I found the welcome warm, I went for an early dinner and wanted to have the set menu . Unfortunately being dairy and wheat intolerant scuppered the starter choices but I asked if I they could suggest a different starter and still have the deal (fancied the bream) and they were really accommodating which was good.

This place really hit the spot - I recommend going in a group so that you can order multiple items and try all the delicious things on offer. My particular favorites were the wood-fired tiger prawns and the smoked short rib beef (sharer). The fillet could have been cooked a little better (it looked rather grey) but it still tasted good. Service was lovely and the wine was also great. Would definitely go back!
T. L.
Good atmosphere, the house lemonade is good and the food is tasty. The chips are chunky, could be a bit more crispy but that's personal preference.
P.
Walked in to a very nice atmosphere lovely ambiance as well with lovely dimmed lights throughout the restaurant.
*The food was very good I’d say probably the best steak Iv had out for quite a while there chateaubriand is unbelievably nice.*
Service was good as well definitely worth a visit.👍🏼
J. B.
Let me start with Gwen, the GM, she was so friendly on our arrival - even knew my name and wished my wife a happy birthday as we walked in.
We were taken to our table and within minutes, 2 glasses of champagne arrived and the evening started from there. Bella looked after us throughout and made the whole experience amazing.
Don't get me started on the food - it was delicious, everything was cooked to perfection.
All staff were super friendly and very welcoming.
Thank you so much for a lovely evening.
See you soon!
V. H.
Fantastic service and delicious food. The ribeye was perfect. Lovely warm snug outside space, even in mid January. And they welcome dogs.
f. s.
The food & service were excellent. We were a group from work having the Christmas outing. Each place had a name & they matched the food orders to that person spot on & kept the drinks flowing even the tea!
Cant fault it....excellent!

Went to the Tower Bridge arm of this restaurant recently for a Sunday lunch. I had never heard of The Coal Shed before.
Decor is standard steak house dark furniture and ornaments. The menu also standard. Prices are at those of Hawksmoor and Gaucho but unfortunately the quality is not up to standard.
Service was good and unintrusive. We had Creamed Spinach, Tender Stem Broccoli, Crispy Garlic New Potatoes and the Smoked Beef Short-Rib. The sides were overall decent, it's hard to really mess those up. The sides arrived quite a few minutes after the ribs, which indicates something not right with the kitchen queuing system.
The big disappointment was the rib. It was warm with cold spots and utterly devoid of any flavour. Well sourced, organic meat where the animals have been allowed to roam has a completely different texture and has a distinctive, incredible taste. This is the experience I get when in Hawksmoor who raise their own cattle, less so at Gaucho but still good. It's clear Coal Shed do not source their meat from anywhere decent if their rib is anything to go by. Note, I did not have any of the steak at Coal Shed, however, I have had ribs at both Hawksmoor and Gaucho to compare.
Overall disappointing, especially at the price point.
I am unlikely to return unless the time/location is extremely convenient.

Booked this place for my girlfriend's birthday. Staff could have not been more friendly, attentive or thoughtful. Ordered a fish starter (Bream Ceviche and Tiger Prawns) massively undersold on the menu but were great portion sizes with amazing additions and flavours including what looked like a black squid ink sauce. For main we shared a Prime Rib Steak from the market menu. Probably one of the best steaks we have ever eaten with a great wine pairing expertly recommended. After sending complements to the chef as one of the best meals we have ever eaten we were sent complementary truffles coated in a charcoal dusting. Turned our mouths black but was worth it! Great food ambience and service. Not cheap but well worth the experience 👌
C. C.
Great service and great quality food. Recommend the beef ribs to share.
R. J.
Great food. Hats off to the chef. We enjoyed everything. Service was a bit slow but soooo worth the wait. And it was a Saturday night and we had plenty of time to chill. Staff was very helpful and accommodating. Again couldn't praise the chef enough. We will definitely return.
J. M.
Delicious food coupled with excellent customer service makes this place well worth paying the extra for.
Visited here with the Mrs whilst looking for a place to eat.
We hadn't booked but the staff were accomodating. We waited at the bar for around 10 minutes and had a drink.
Once seated at our table, the waiter that looked after us was very friendly and knowledgeable.
The restaurant didn't have the whiskey that I usually drink and so he suggested a couple of others and even let me taste before ordering.
The food was just wonderful, melt in your mouth, delicious.
It's not cheap but it's no McDonalds.
I'd recommend this place any day if the week!
J. K.
Visited Saturday 29th January. Fantastic service, Chateaubriand was amazing and perfectly cooked (rare) with a smoky, chargrilled crust! Beautiful bottle of Carmenere too! Cannot fault this place! Looking forward to coming back!
J. P.
Our steak was very good. Our bottle of wine was very good. Both were priced at the high end of steak in London. The decor was chic, the location is somewhat glamorous in a corporate way. Our waitress was friendly and professional.
On the other hand, starters were overcooked, overseasoned and overpriced. Dry prawns smothered in something spicy. Bland scallops smothered in something spicy and served on a shell on a pile of salt. Side dishes were likewise formulaic and between average and below-average in quality. The 'wedge salad' was a quarter of a lettuce head covered in bacon bits and what might as well have been Tesco blue cheese dressing.
Added to that, the kitchen was slow, side dishes arrived sporadically over ten minutes rather than together with the steak, and getting the bill (£100 per head) required a bit of handwaving and room searching.
The place was busy, and on a Saturday night it was the 'impress your date' crowd more than anything else. And in an illuminated-fountain vanilla-scented loo, near Tower Bridge way it is quite a chic venue. But the glam isn't enough to cover the lazy food.

I was looking forward to finally trying the London outpost of this Brighton institution. I came along with a friend for dinner and I was not disappointed.
The service was stellar, from the manager at the door right down to the waitress that looked after us. We had a few questions about the menu and she suitably gave us a clear explanation which made us go for something new.
The food came out and I was positively wowed. I went with a Scallop starter, Seafood dish of the day main and Baked Apple dessert which was amazing, an explosion on the senses and delicious right down to the last bite!
The waitress had overheard it was a birthday meal I was having too and surprised me with a little birthday treat too which was so unexpected and so thoughtful.
I'll definitely be coming again! Highly recommend and in a location that's just the right amount of tucked away that it's not mad busy or too quiet!
E. L.
Food was nice! The ceviche was so so good and the prawns were exceptional especially with the chilli kick! My friend told me the steak was cooked perfectly and the seafood stew was huge : salmon, swordfish, mussels and clams! Need to go back to try other dishes!
B. M.
Tremendous food coupled with a warm atmosphere and brilliant service. Each and every member of staff who served us were extremely friendly and genuinely cared about our experience. We booked ahead as we visited on a busy Friday night, and were delighted. The restaurant is located right by the Thames and part of a modern complex close to other amenities such as the Tower Bridge and several bars which can be enjoyed afterwards. A must visit when in town. Thanks!
R. L.
Food menu is limited but has some wonderful items and a specials board. Hope they change the menu regularly. Wine is expensive and limited choice with little under £40. Had to complain about service as 3 or 4 issues over the evening. No offer to waive the service charge ... manager did empathise and can only hope training sorts things out. Out of 4 people I was only to suggest 4* rest were firm 3* so that's the score. The goat was amazing maybe that's the extra * for me. Rest of food was good and worth a return if the service can be improved.
Z.
Visited on a Sunday and booked in advance. Without doubt one of the best Sunday roast beef ever. The sharing menu is amazing and comes with all the vegetables, roast potatoes and Yorkshire puds. The service was attentive and our waiter was friendly and welcoming. I will be back!
G. Y.
After having eaten here for more than four times, I’m still not impressed with their food. All of their steaks are average; whole fish to share is overburned and made sort of sloppily. The Sunday roast steak was the best tasting so far. Fire grilled seafood plate is good but make sure that crab claw is not missing. Cod can be very dry. Veal tartar is good. The only consistently delicious dish is short rib appetizer, it’s really tasty.
S. L.
Wow. That's all I can say.
What am amazing looking restaurant. The cocktail bar is great. The ambience is fantastic. And I haven't even started on there food.
I had maldon oysters, rib-eye steak, beef dripping chips, onion rings, rib-eye mac n cheese, and some pork croquettes.
I know it sounds a lot but I was very hungry. Haha.
I give it a 10/10. Brilliant service, great food amd very friendly staff. Will 100% be going back there again.
A. B.
One of the best steaks I've head in London and North American (read attentive) style service that can be hard to find in London. Good vibe and great wines as well. Will definitely be back here.
R. D.
Excellent unfussy steak house. Attentive and friendly service in a very pleasant setting. Smoked rib was excellent.
T. B.
Some of the best food I've had in a long time. Every single starter and side : I had chips, onion rings, the tartare veal, and the barbecue squid - was dripping in the right amount of seasoning or taste.
The price was reasonable and the service was quick.
Service was very friendly and accommodating, and receptionist offered to go outside to find my girlfriend who was struggling to find the place.
Only feedback would be: bigger chip portions, and a picture of the map on how to get there uploaded to this Google page. My girlfriend got lost trying to find the place, Google Maps was unreliable, and she didn't think to check main website.
J. C.
Lovely steak tasted great. Forgive me if I'm being northern though when I pay £27 for a steak I kind of expect the chips to be included and not a £4 extra
L. G.
Omg! The best restaurant in tower bridge!
Great customer service, it's a very smart place where you can have lunch, dinner or just have some drinks. The music is good.
The desserts where the best! We wanted to congratulate the chef because of the lovely appearance and taste of the plates!
Thank you so much Carmen Serrano for been that attentive and kind to all of us
S. H.
We visited the coal shed on 24th August for dinner to celebrate my boyfriends birthday.
We had spent the day in London and came across the restaurant while walking past and commented on how nice it looked.
The waitress who served was very polite and welcoming as well as giving us excellent recommendations on the wine.
All the food was delicious and well presented. We was also surprised with a lovely happy birthday truffles after our meal.
After we left the restaurant we realised we had left our bag there. After a phone call we had arranged for the bag to be returned to us.
We was extremely happy with the service and food at the restaurant and have already recommended it to friends and family on their next visit to London. We hope yo visit again on our next trip to London.
Well done to the whole team for such a lovely meal and service. Highly recommended
H. O.
We enjoyed the starters. The beef shortrib and pork were excellent.
Onto the steak, we had a porterhouse and chateaubriand with a selection of starters. Our favourites were the carrots, the mash and the spinach. Delicious
G. G.
We celebrated my friend’s birthday here. I eat a predominately raw vegan diet and they were more than accommodating. They make me a bespoke salad using their fresh raw ingredients such as rocket, romaine lettuce, tomato, onion, zucchini, avocado, cucumber etc.
My carnivorous friends also enjoyed their meals greatly :) amazing staff that are courteous and polite.
L. H.
A few excellent dishes and great cocktails let down by mediocre steak and poor service. The stand out dish was the mackerel ceviche and oysters...not great when you’re expecting a meat feast. The rare sirloin steaks lacked flavour other than charred, the burnt ends mash was delicious but cabbage a bit lost. Béarnaise sauce was hollandaise. One wine had to be sent back, took a while and a comment that there was nothing wrong with the first to receive the second. Service was messy; too many different people waiting our table and constantly asking for permission to clear plates that were clearly empty. Will not be returning.
Worst of all, we had an offer for free cocktails and showed the app from a legitimate provider that we had this from - waiter and manager refused to honour it, quite petty.
B. S.
We were led here by delicious, grilled food smell and I have to say we weren't disappointed with the flavours either.
Starting with 4 juicy oysters, as a main we've ordered 600 grams porterhouse steak to share. Containing lovely cuts of both filet and ribeye, with side of garlic field mashrooms and green leaf salad it was a perfect size dinner for two. Do not worry if you prefer bigger portions than that. You can choose the size of your steak, starting from 600 grams.
From quite impressive drinks menu we've chosen a carafe of Tikves, Kratoshija. Delicious red wine from Macedonia - perfect finish to a steak dinner.
To finish off the whole experience, definitely try milk chocolate bar - especially if you're Nutella fan 😉
S. T.
Meat and fish restaurant in the new development area by Tower Bridge. Varied menu which included Goat to share. It wasn't too busy but it was still quite loud, even with no music on. The waiter was helpful with the menu, but food did take a long while to come out. Apart from that, the steak was ok... portions for the sides were smaller than expected (one portion of chips only had 6 chips in it!). Location and views were great, but everything else I felt was average.
Wheelchair access ✔️

An average experience. I have been dining at the Coal Shed in Brighton and the sister restaurant the Salt Room for a number of years, so I was excited to dine at the London restaurant for a client dinner for the first time.
Starters were good, but we waited 15 minutes for plates to be cleared and had to ask someone to come and clear the table eventually. Unfortunately all 3 steaks we ordered were over done and had to be sent back. Alex (the manager) handled the situation tactfully and was most apologetic - I must say his attentiveness and charm was the highlight of our experience, thank you!
On receiving our steaks again, we could not fault them. They were cooked to perfection, tender and tasty. The sides were also delicious, particularly the seasonal greens with fennel.
A shame that the meal didn't get off to the best start as the quality of the produce cannot be faulted.
Would I return... Perhaps!
j. c.
Excellent service and wonderful food. Definitely going back
E. L. G.
The Coal Shed is a newly opened restaurant near Tower Bridge in the new 1 Tower Bridge complex just behind the theatre. It offers a few tables outside for al fresco dining as well as a two leveled restaurant with modern light decor. The staff were friendly and accommodating upon arrival and talked us through the different parts of the menu and the specials.
There were a good selection of cocktails including aperitifs. We had the:
Daisy Ash: Mezcal, Peach Essence, Citrus, seasonal Shrub, Peach Bitters
Wise Elder: Citrus Vodka, Lemon Balm Cordial and Prosecco
Rose Negroni: Gin, Rose Vermouth, Aperol.
All of the cocktails came beautifully presented with detail around the rim and a flower in the negroni.
The menu is split into snacks, starters, meat, and fish and the ingredients are produced in Britain. For starters we had the BBQ Short Rib with peanut, chilli and spring onion (£9) which was absolutely stunning. The meat was so tender falling off the bone in an instant and the sauce was delicious and plentiful. We were similarly impressed with the South Coast Cured Grey Mullet (£9) and the Torched Sussex Mackerel (£8)
Many of the main dishes are designed for sharing around the table. The daily cuts of meat and the weight are added to chalkboards around the restaurant. When we visited there was the choice of Chateaubriand (similar to a fillet), Porterhouse steak (half fillet, half sirloin), prime rib (rib eye) and sirloin on the bone. Each cut of meat is charged per 100g. If you prefer fish, they had a special whole seabass for 3 people!
We opted for the 800g Porterhouse Steak (£9 per 100g) between the three of us and a selection of side dishes. It was impossible to resist the Short rib croquettes from the snacks list which were packed full of filling. We loved the Mac n cheese with a perfectly grilled top and the filling bubbling away. The Triple cooked chips were light and fluffy, the Jersey Royals were fantastic and the Peas, bacon and onion added different flavours and textures to the meal.
The sides were super impressive and whilst the steak was flavoursome, we did think it was slightly on the pricey side given around 150g is bone. However, if you prefer to not pay per 100g there are options for fillet, sirlon and rib eye individually.
That was more than enough for the three of us, yet we found it in us to try dessert. This was mainly because of the words “Sweet Selection for Two” which changes daily. This featured Chocolate coal, fudge, marshmallow (toasted), hot lemon filled doughnuts, macaron and crepes. It was an absolute feast that was more than enough for two people. The coal and fudge were so rich and delicious literally making your eyes open with amazement.
We loved the atmosphere at The Coal Shed restaurant near Tower Bridge and the friendly staff always willing to make suggestions. The food was fantastic – particularly the short rib – and the location is just stunning.
Keep an eye out for the pre-theatre menu which is served from 5pm – 6.30pm from Monday to Saturday. It offers 2 courses for £20 and 3 courses for £24. With a choice of three starters, three mains and two desserts, there should be enough to please diners.
Alternatively, if you fancy a quick lunch, The Coal Shed offers one course for £10.95. Finally, they have BYO wine Monday where corkage is £5 per bottle.
M. A.
Had a birthday meal here with 7 guests. Lovely friendly staff, great location and delicious food.
Nothing was too much trouble and food was reasonably priced given the exceptional quality and service. Also the cocktails are AMAZING!
Will be back in the summer to dine outside and get great views of the Tower of London, lit up at night, whilst having another meal.
S. C.
A modern restaurant with a few traditional decorative features in what is currently a rather soul less development near Tower Bridge.
This is cirtainly the place to come if you want meat dishes with a range of steak cuts and others such as venison or pork. A few fish dishes look tempting too. Wide range of starters with the cheek to be recommended. Went for Sunday roast beef, rib of sirloin with all the trimmings. Meat was great but rest was a bit lacking, thin gravy and Yorkshire's under done.
Luckily desserts rescued the day with fantastic chocolate bar and tasty pineapple. Also had a taste of charcoal ice cream. Jury is out.....
All in all a decent meal and will no doubt improve once the team are up to speed and the surrounding spaces are full to create a better setting.
PS not easy to find, it's in the centre of the development in the long walkway next to a fountain.
L. K.
Really delicious food & drink - great service. Four of us dined here for lunch expecting fairly simple meat dishes but were impressed by the creative range of fish, meat & veggie options. Looking forward to going back to try the Sunday lunch!
D. M.
Lovely place, food and service with fairly high prices, marred only by the fact that the bill arrives with 12.5‰ discretionary service charge already added onto the bill. Only noticed if you read the bill thoroughly. This necessitated an awkward conversation about the discretionary aspect. With no quibbles the charge was taken off the bill back at the till and re-presented to me at the table. Embarrassing that other diners could see the proceedings.
I had fully intended to tip well but this annoyed me so I did not tip.
I suggest that the Coal Shed either work it into the advertised price list or leave it off the bil and truly discretionary.
J. G.
Fancy smart and sharp
Welcoming restaurant with very good menu and food. Prices vary from mid expensive to very expensive but worth it. Really had a good time there
And the rest rooms shows the most squared toilets I have ever seen ;)
O. C.
Shared a delicious porterhouse steak with some sides after a choice of started and then some dessert. Steak was absolutely delicious and perfectly cooked. Only criticisms I would have is there was no alcohol free beers and had run out of the 0% gin. The sharing steak was fine, but we had to order several portions of starters and sides as there were a bit small on portion size (but high on price!). I had a Yule log dessert which was lovely, personally would have looked for more chocolate flavour in the sponge, nice enough though. There is a lovely atmosphere and the restaurant itself is kitted out very nicely. Would recommend (with a warning on portion size).
A. W.
Best Sunday roast in SE1! Sharing roast... Yummmm Fantatsic cocktails! Great service. We feel like family here :-)
S. R.
Myself and 7 others really enjoyed our Sunday dinner here recently. Reception and staff were warm and conscientious (shout out to the waiter who patiently explained all the different teas on the dessert menu to my friend- thank you for taking the time!) and the food was amazing. I highly recommend the roast goat sharing platter for 2, will definitely be back for that! Also, great cocktails! Would recommend for any gathering, whether large or small.
C. K.
Excellent restaurant. Great food, flawless service and very good location, right next to Tower Bridge. Highly recommend everything - burrata, sardines on toast, and all the fish (I had the tandoor sea bream and my partner had the special turbot collar - which was indeed special. Highly recommend in a very restaurant heavy area.
T. D.
Excellent meal in London. They even made mushy peas good for this American! The ambiance is beautiful and the location is great.
J.
Small plates compared to prices, but a good selection of meats and cuts. Staff were super attentive and friendly - a quieter restaurant compared to the main ones by London Bridge.
A. B.
Had dinner before the theatre. As pescatarians we were concerned about lack of choice. We shouldn't have been, plenty of delightful fish and veggie options. Just wish the chips were not cooked in animal fat.
A. B.
Excellent service from very attentive staff. The food was amazing, fantastic 1.1kg Prime Rid shared between 3...could have done with 1.5kg I think!
D. B.
Great food and location, the staff were professional and eager to please. The food itself was lovely and so was the ambiance. Not overpriced considering the location right by Tower bridge.
T. K.
The Coal Shed is a beautiful restaurant in a brilliant (albeit touristy) location, however the rest of our experience was just okay. We went for a Sunday Roast, and the service wasn't fabulous nor was it particularly reasonably priced. The Sharing Roast for 2 is nice in that it comes with all the trimmings as sides, but the yorkies were a bit overtoasted (with burnt edges) and it wasn't roast as much as a sliced steak. The cheese cauliflower was delicious, and the gin selection impressive. Think it's probably best for an after-work weekday dinner.
F. P. K.
The service was very very slow. The food was average. Steaks were overdone and appetizer, with the exception of the scallop, were average at best. The toast on the stilton dessert tasted burnt and musty. The bathrooms were filthy. For the money I would have expected much better. A skip.
h.
Amazing attentive service and great tasting food. I wish there was more béarnaise sauce provided for the steak.
E. B.
Short Rib Croquettes: good. Smoked Old Spot Pork Belly: Excellent. Shared Gresham Duck and Sweet Selection For Two. Both very good. Do BOOK.
P. I.
We went here before going to The Bridge Theatre nearby. We were pressed for time. The service was prompt and friendly. The food - both the steak I had and the courgette fritters that my wife had - were excellent. We will happily go back
A. P.
Lovely dinner before heading to the theatre. Wonderful food and absolutely brilliant staff
C. M.
Very accommodating we actually booked the wrong location Brighton (don't ask) and they accommodated us even though they were busy. Service was exceptional food was divine.
A. H.
The 900g chateaubriand was exceptional. The way they char the rare steak gives it a distinct flavour. Shout out to the truffle Mac n cheese too.
J. B.
Very nice accommodation staff. A little overpriced I thought but actually probably comparable with other similar restaurants. Again, if these places just gave a little more it would make all of the difference. Not sure what the answer is, but more imagination would help them stand out. On reflection I've changed this rating from a 3 to 4.
E. T.
Great food and service. Drinks were amazing, really liked that we could choose how we'd like our beef cooked on our Sunday roast. Nice atmosphere, beautifully kept restaurant. Clean. Only minor criticism being that the restaurant was pretty empty when we arrived yet we were sat very close to another couple.
Thanks again! Will be back
P. D.
Wasn’t great, wasn’t bad. Service was good. The steak I had was not cooked how I asked. I asked for med/well. Came to be still breathing and on top of that it was really hard. Should have stuck to goodmans for our xmass meal like we always have. Would I come back ? No.
N. H.
Amazing monkfish and beef brisket in particular, and the new manager James is charming!
a. h.
What can we say??? What a great find. Superb steaks. Our waitress was wonderful. Thank you so much
A. L.
Fantastic service! Great food at affordable prices.
D. N.
Chateaubriand was lovely. Service was great too.

Me and my wife had a great time. The food was exciting and flavorful, the atmosphere was warm and friendly plus the service was so attentive.
Top Marc's from my wife and I. We will definitely be back to visit, would not hesitate to recommend to others 😉👌🏽
N. N.
Very nice lunch set menus, pleasant staff, closely located to underground and the Tower Bridge.
L. N.
Food was nice, service friendly and efficient but no masks for staff. Puts the rating down a bit unfortunately.
F. O.
Lovely setting great night but unfortunately a bad experience in the customer service area.
Poor service which may I sayl was resolved with the restaurant manager.
Would we revist answer probably yes at a very later date.
T. B.
The steak in the Coal Shed was absolutely fabulous, which was accompanied with a good bottle of Georgian wine. Definitely the best meal of our weekend in London.
G. C.
Great T bone steak. Staff were efficient and attentive
J. W.
The Coal Shed expertly balances choice and quality on its menu; there's not a huge number of options yet your choices don't feel limited. This is likely due to the sheer quality of the dishes available, which did not drop with any of the dishes ordered by my group of 8.
The steaks were excellent, the fish delicious and the sides just the right size to leave you full but not uncomfortably so. The wine selection was also suitably tight, and definitely added to the excellent evening we had here.
M. S.
We had a fantastic time at The Coal Shed and were exceptionally well looked after by Nikon. We hosted a private work Christmas party and the Christmas Feasting menu was absolutely delicious. The service was excellent throughout and we were made to feel very comfortable. Will definitely be looking to do something again with you soon and recommending the venue to others we know! Thank you!
R. G.
This is a fabulous restaurant with staff that are dedicated to ensuring the customers are having the best time possible. They were very careful with my daughters but allergy clearly explaining the menu and what was fully nut free and what may have been cross contaminated. And finally without any prompting brought out a celebratory dish which was just lovely
M. G. P.
Very good food and service. Quality is just astonishing. Highly recommended.
I.
A very nice gastropub hidden in a nice niche behind bridge theatre. The food is extremely good and the steak is the best part.
S. N.
Upmarket restaurant that serves some really good steaks. Usually busy at lunchtime, it's worth booking and taking a bit longer to enjoy the food. Reasonable prices mean you can enjoy a good three courses. The dessert options are amazing, and worth sharing if the mains we're too big. The wine list is varied enough to please at prices that are not inflated. I loved my lunch here and will be there again when I'm In town.
E. M.
Came here after the theatre, seconds away. Warm welcome, friendly and helpful staff, service was quick and just right. And the food was just so delicious, 4 instead of 5 stars because of certain things missing from menu, and just a tinge loud for us oldies. But will definitely be wanting to go back and work my way through what is available on the menu. So tasty.
G. M.
Great food and surroundings, staff really friendly, not overly expensive for the location right by Tower Bridge, highly recommended !
C. R.
Great menu and tastes! Visited after seeing on master chef, all expectations fulfilled! Ok prices, very friendly service, excellent attitude to us and our baby! Nice ambience, pleasant interior. Also, great choice of wine) highly recommend, as long as they keep it up!
H. S. M.
Atmosphere/food is good but the service isnt great and far from impressive hence not fully satisfied with this place. For the following reasons:
1. I booked the restaurant and even when staff called to confirm my booking and i asked if they allow birthday cakes, they failed to inform me there was corkage fee for this.
2. When we finished the main course, stagf just handed over the dessert menu without asking if meal was fine, would we like anything else desserts etc but instead just placed dessert menu on our table.
Not a place where you want to have a good dining experience. 3 stars for the chef.
G. J.
We had a wonderful meal here for our last night that perfectly topped off a fantastic weekend away. We were well advised on the menu and were offered some wine to taste to ensure it would match our meal choice. The atmosphere was very friendly without being intrusive and the craic from the member of staff who served us was great (Andy I think).
We had the goat and it was amazing, bursting with flavour and more than you could possibly eat.
When you leave a restaurant buzzing, having eaten and drank well with great service it elevates a weekend away from the kids to a fabulous, romantic weekend that you enthuse about to anyone who will listen.
P. B.
Went tonight for our second visit having been fortunate enough to be invited to the opening night in October. Food is excellent and so is the service. Tonight we had bread with beef dripping, followed by scallops, followed by rib eye for me and cod for my wife. For pudding we had some mini “sweets”
Enjoyed it all and as it was a Monday we took our own wine for a fiver corkage. Loved the whole experience.
L. O.
Our table was looked after by Tizi who was just brilliant. We had a vegan on a table a she made sure he was offered all available options, and advised us very skilfully about amount of food to order and an amazing wine pairing that everyone raved about. When there was a tiny sides and sauces delay for the main she quickly resolved it. The food was just incredible from starters all the way to espresso martinis we ended on.
D. r.
We got a selection of meat dishes and my wife had a couple of vegetarian bits between 6 of us (there was only one veggie option). The food was really tasty and service was friendly. Total came to about £200 for 6 people with a couple of drinks each.
Visited Jan 2019.
J. G.
Ive walked by this restaurant a few times and mean to go in at some stage. At last I have. Lovely décor and staff. Great food and drinks menus.
We had 3 courses with drinks and our bill was actually less than I anticipated :)
We can recommend everything we had. Smoked pork belly, Jacobs Ladder, Sea Bream, Rib Eye, Chips, Mash with burnt ends (EXCELLENT!) spinach. Followed by trifle and Milk Choc bar.
My only negative I took away was the noise from a few large groups nearby who were also enjoying a late, long Friday lunch as we were.
B. S.
Good food, but slow service. It took an hour for our mains to arrive. Then a further 45 minutes for the deserts. The cheeseboard was generous, but served rather oddly with bread rather than crackers. Our feedback at the end was greeted with polite indifference
M. C.
There's no denying this place is lovely. The food is great, and the ambience good. But it is a bit stuck up. And the waiter was quite rude, and as though we were an inconvenience. We came in for a business lunch so were not particularly troublesome! Great food and selection of beef and sides. Pleased I didn't have to see the bill but I suspect it was quite pricey. Would recommend still as it was really enjoyable.
N. K. P.
The sirloin was excellent, however the medium well was more like a well done. We should've ordered medium. We chose chimicurri sauce and it tasted fresh and flavourful. Sides were great, 10/10 for the truffle mac 'n cheese and sauteed mushrooms. The fries were fine. Our waiter is really outgoing and attentive, he explained really well how the mushrooms are cooked. Thanks a lot! my parents were really happy during their visit in London.
M. L.
Update: The restaurant has been amazing bout following up with me regarding being poisoned. They checked CCTV and my order in the computer and the manager remembered my order as it was early. They have assured my that they did not allow dairy into my dish. Thank you for your quick response
Don’t eat here if you have a food allergy. Had dinner here tonight before the theater and specified I have a dairy allergy. The waiter asked me “how allergic” and while he assured me the kitchen made everything I ate dairy free I had to leave the show at intermission to travel an hour home while forcing myself not to puke on public transit. Thank you for ruining my night
C. F.
Fantastic meatastic Sunday roast. Perfectly cooked steak with nice selection of sides. We were four adults and two toddlers, and the staff were a gem with kids. Very child- and adult-friendly lunch. Beautiful setting. High-end soaps and lotions in the wash room. Nice extensive wine list. Highly recommend!
K. M.
It looked awesome from the outside. I just didn't go in. Google just thinks so because I walked past.
J. W.
I am a Londoner not a tourist just to put this review in perspective. This is a contemporary place hidden away in the middle of the new buildings have gone up in the last few years behind County Hall. The waitresses were really nice the food was excellent and the setting when we were there on a Saturday night sitting upstairs was very relaxed. I have the feeling that if the place was near to capacity some of the comments people have made about the speed of service would come into play. This is a relatively expensive place as you would expect in this part of London so near to tower bridge etc. Expect to pay around 25 quid for a steak with no sides and around 30 + for a bottle of wine. I really enjoyed the meal though and we'll go back there sometime.
S. F. L.
Relatively small portions but tasty.
We got the 3 courses for £24 - the starters were a bit of a joke in size but the mains and desserts were larger - we didn't leave hungry but we were on the borderline.
In terms of food it was good quality and tasty. The chips were very nice with the main and the meats were of great quality. Similarly the desserts were lovely - I had the cheese board which included a soft and hard cheese - both very creamy and fresh. It came with bread, a savoury biscuit and some pickled chutney I think. My partner had some rhubarb thing which looked and tasted amazing.
Probably a place you go for a special occasion unless you're raking it in - which I'm not!
If you want more food for a lower price there's a wetherspoons less than 100 metres away :)
S. H.
Great meal , professional and polite service, tad on the expensive side but I guess that’s to be expected in London
E.
This restaurant is beautifully tucked away in the bustle of London, but well worth finding. The Octopus Starter was simply excellent, beyond all expectations, and the Prime Rib was the best I have ever had.
This was all topped with excellent service with professional staff, who knew instinctively when to appear and disappear. They were friendly yet very professional. An all round great experience, we will definitely be back!
A. N.
Fantastic food with fantastic service! We never felt like we were waiting for the staff to attend to us, and the food was beautifully cooked. Highly recommend the brick chicken.
M. W.
It was good but not great, took some friends for dinner as we live local. Had to wait an hour for the food to arrive, we all ordered fish so if they said at the time cooking time will be an hour you can accept that, however nothing was said about the delay. Had to ask for my wine to be refilled and do not believe anyone looks at the toilets during the evening. If you check a coat it's good to be aware that everyone helps themselves to collect.
J. M.
I held a work dinner here and everyone had a great time. The food was very good, however the service was a bit lacking. I would definitely go back and give them another shot. Highly recommend the chocolate charcoal (truffles). A great way to cap off a dinner.
D. D.
Attended work Chrismas party. Mixed feelings. The service was rather slow but I can understand that given how much work there is in a short space of time.
The food was coming out very slowly and it took a long time before everything that was supposed to be consumed together ended up on a table. Unfortunately my impression was absolutely destroyed by beef that came out first and was basically raw (I guess it was cooked blue which suits a taste of only few) followed by a long wait for remaining dishes (that actually needed to be cooked). The rest was quite tasteful with an exception of vege dishes that were simply boring....
I. N.
Very good vibe everyone friendly. Food was very good to superb. They were able to accommodate us on a nice Friday evening with reservation 45 mins before we wanted to sit. Excellent prime rib, all sides VG to great. The carrots were a complete surprise and true special way to prepare and serve. Husband had the chocolate bar dessert - loved it.
L. M.
I wondered why it was rather empty on a Friday evening. The steak arrived and I understood. A lovely piece of steak no doubt but medium rare it was not and the garlic mushrooms were a little bland. Such a shame the cooking was off, esp in light of the price.
J. E.
Fantastic business lunch. Had the turbot to share which was delicious alongside some shellfish. Can't miss out on the Ruby Chocolate Bar for dessert :) Service was impeccable from the minute we walked in and felt looked after the whole time. Great setting for lunch and will certainly be coming back. Thank you!
R. H.
Great Sunday roast place. Food packed full of flavour .
M. R.
Great place to eat. Lovely food and service. We booked a 6pm table as this was the only time available or 9pm. There were a lot of tables available upon arrival and still throughout our meal...One annoying thing was 2 lingering flies which ruined our meal. I mentioned it to the waitress but it went ignored so 4 stars!
R. S.
Good steak and sides, but learnt that bloody Mary doesn't go well with red wine
T. R.
Good meal. Good service. Would recommend.
B. H.
We benefited from the soft opening with a big group in the private dining area upstairs, with a choice of three options for each course. Food and service were mostly good, from an inventive jerk salmon starter and brilliantly aged beef fore rib through to a wonderfully balanced chocolate and hazelnut starter. We did have to wait a long time for our food (we sat down for lunch before 1pm and dessert was served at 3pm), but staff handled this okay in the end. Chips weren't as fluffy as they could have been and the sauce for the beef was not at the right temperature.
I. A. A.
Excellent croquettes and gazpacho! Lovely steak. Totally recommended
S. L.
Gorgeous food with excellent and friendly service. Very clean. Great location. We will definitely return.
M. M.
Good food and service overshadowed by average location, sterile interior, and comparable prices to places without these drawbacks
I visited on Sunday for lunch and dined alone. Great starter, steak, wine and service - I hade a haddock scotch egg special and a ribeye cut of beef. The menu is probably better for groups and sharing so I may not have experienced this place at its best.
Still, it's in a new build 'shopping mall' type space in a pretty lame neighbourhood and charges top London prices ... so go with a friend or in a group or don't go at all. There are better place for steak and wine
J. M.
Came in here for a quick lunch, and ended up spending 6hrs with a leisurely and expertly made cocktails at the bar afterwards. All one can say about this place is positive: the attentive service, the delicious food, the great wine selection, and the masterful mixologist at the bar.
Highly recommend making a stop here - top two recommendations:
- DO try the chocolate coal, it’s to die for
- Don’t leave without stopping at the bar for a cocktail - describe the kind of thing that you like and be prepared to be amazed at the delicious concoction that is presented back to you
If you’re in the Tower Bridge area, then this should be your go to for lunch or dinner followed by some drinks.
A. G.
Meat is unreal! Roast dinner is great and good value!
M. S.
Absolutely fantastic food and staff. Definitely recommend this restaurant. You have to try the burnt end mash it's unbelievable. The monk fish special was fantastic. Loved our visit.
M. P.
£110 for two: two starters, carafe of wine, shared Sunday roast, dessert and cocktail. Good quality food, well presented. Serving staff was good. Will be happy to come back for more.
S. G.
Although our waitress was very friendly and knowledgeable, starters took 20 minutes to arrive, macarons dessert was not fresh, tea we've ordered was forgotten about, and it took ages to get the bill. Plenty of meat and fish dishes on the menu, good portion size, but nothing special though.
C. S.
When it comes to steak it is important how it is raised then cooked with respect. The Coal Shed delivers always with fresh and amazing flavours that excite any steak goer. This is a must must have experience especially in the heart of 1 Tower Bridge Residents. Staff are clearly passionate and will make sure your expectations are met and exceeded. Not stuffy but always professional and willing to go that extra mile.
H. D.
Convivial surroundings, attentive waiters, the Sunday roast was slightly pricey for the quantity of meat and vegetables served, including an inadequate little pot of horseradish sauce, and the vegan option was non existent so don't bother going there if you're not a meat eater.
R. A.
Great food, friendly staff. Highly recommended
W. H.
Pleasant enough food. I dont though agree with any restaurant that automatically adds a service charge to the bill. 12.5% if i recall. Whilst it is of course commonplace it should be up to me to decide if i want to recognise good service and food. I had the bream, ordered jersey royals with it. Both were nice enough. Colleagues both had steak. Having had steak at Gaucho nearby i am pleased i didnt have it there! I wouldnt describe any of the food as memorable or above average but ok for a convenient pricey lunch.
T.
So firstly the food is fantastic and service is polite, attentive and efficient. 10/10.
A well thought through menu and wine list and although a meat eaters paradise, we had vegetarians and fish lovers on our table who loved it.
The beef here stands out from the crowd flavoursome, succulent and tender.
We shared a prime rib (a bone in Ribeye essentially) which was nothing short is sensational. Bone marrow sauce and bernaise are optional but very very good.
I understand the beef is UK / Ireland so naturally grass fed (no intensive grain fed hormone filled USA beef here..no no) The Coal Shed is the real deal, traditional beef done very well.
We're going back.
C. N.
Just off the beaten track at Tower Bridge worth a visit enjoyed the food and the decor especially the lighting is perfect
E. C.
Food and service above average
Soft drinks menu limited to diet coke, lemonade and juice
Food came quickly and was good quality
L. K.
Super friendly staff. Most dishes on the menu are pretty overpriced (like a single not-very-meaty octopus leg for £11), but the goat for two is exquisite (though it is £50). Cocktails need more alcohol and less sugar.
J. E.
This was OK, but not quite up to the standard I was hoping for. It may need to settle in a bit, but a waiter who describes the contents of the cheeseboard as "Goats cheese and soft cheese" needs to be better informed. The cooking was good, and artfully presented, but the portion control meant I wasn't fully sustained through two hours of Shakespeare at the Bridge Theatre next door. Indeed, the location is the best thing about The Coal Shed. The Tower of London looms at you from across the river as you step outside. Spectacular!
t. b.
Excellent food efficient friendly service!
M. S.
Probably the best Sunday Roast Ive ever had
M. L.
Amazing Sunday lunch the prime rib is truly amazing cannot fault the food or service
J. P.
Very friendly staff and good food. We went for lunch with our three kids after a visit to the Tower of London. The staff was very helpful and friendly with our kids, including a one year old baby.
A. S.
Great food, excellent service.
m. m.
Meatylicious! That's how I would describe The Coal Shed. Fabulous food, a great atmosphere, friendly aproachable staff and nice interior brought The Coal Shed to life. A wonderful location in the heart of London and an experience to remember. Go for it!
E. R.
Excellent! The environment, location, the food. I highly reccommend!
M. G.
Taken here by relatives; fantastic food: starters, mains and sweets to die for! generous portions and the staff were brilliant - a real highlight to our stay in London
C. H. H. L.
Excellent food. The steak and seafood here are amazing. Don't pay for overpriced garbage like Hawksmoor, the steak here is the most beautiful piece of meat I have encountered in my life. I feel bad for vegetarians and vegans
J. P.
Amazing food and amazing staff.
D. L.
A bit hidden but don't give up. Great restaurant, lovely atmosphere, friendly staff and the food is well presented. I had the Tandoori Bream though extremely tasty was slightly underdone. However, I will go back and give this place another chance as it is worth it.
R. C.
Very good service. Steak cooked perfectly. Charging extra for sauces and the small size of the side dishes for £4 not so good.
D. A.
Amazing sharing Sunday lunch platter, cooked to perfection with all the trimmings. The extra side of truffle mac and cheese is essential. Delicious!
T. H.
Very good though a bit pricey.
X. S.
Korean fried chicken was crispy and tender. Steak was nicely cooked and desserts were nice too!
S. H.
It's very delicious. The waitress and waiters are very friendly and helpful. This is one of the best restaurants I have ever been.
J. N.
Delicious. Unfortunately arrived too late for Sunday roast. Plenty of yummy entree options. Lots of cozy nooks. Very helpful with directions to tube.
J. B.
Food tastes very good. Very small portions. Wait staff were nice, but small portions out weigh taste and service.
H. A.
Food was delicious, however it would be helpful if the menue was more descriptive to help people with more dietary restrictions without having to ask the waiters about the contents of every dish.
S. W.
Ox cheeks with truffle purée was to die for ❤️
J. R.
Great food, atmosphere, service and pricing
T. G.
Great service and friendly staff. Food is amazing. Size of starts is standard size for one person. Kitchen closes at 22.30 Monday - Saturday and Sunday at 22.00
P. N.
Great atmosphere, food out of this world .Never had pickled grapes mmmmmm can't wait for the next time. Service was also brilliant, will definitely revisit.
M. N.
A great setting just round the corner from Tower Bridge and absolutely fabulous steak with excellent service.
Every bit as good as the original restaurant in Brighton's Kemptown.
a. c.
Great ambience and location. Very nice starter beef rib, but steaks a little on the dry side. Had better. Onions ring very good
M. D.
Creative menu, very nice wine list, friendly and professional service. Keep up the good work! (Try Sunday roast, it is very good value for quality)
C. M.
Had to wait 30 minutes for booked table. Service poor. Food quite nice in fairness but overall experience was mediocre. Living off its reputation I fear.
S. B.
Strange food pairings make it hard to recommend at the price (e.g. lamb paired with a spicy tomato salsa which completely obscured the flavour of the lamb).
S. W.
Visited for the first time last night and what a amazing place. Antonio the barman went above and beyond. He certainly knows what he is doing with the cocktails. Highly recommend.
J. M.
Soooo delicious. Don't think I've ever eaten so much food in one sitting. Staff very friendly. Meat was incredible
N. O.
Delicious 😍 will definitely be returning
G. S.
Very nice restaurants. The food is good and it's not expensive in relation to other local eateries. Sunday roast is excellent.
A. S.
Tiny portions insulting to my belly. But ok/good food. Lovely waitress. Ran out of half the food on the menu. Hawksmoor much better
H. U.
Very good location, a few minutes walk from Tower Bridge. Nice and friendly staff and we had very very good Sunday roast here. Highly recommend.
C. M.
My girlfriend and I came here last week and the service was fantastic, very friendly and fast food service! Fantastic steak and chips, fully recommend!
A. E. D.
It was a busy night for a Monday. Staff were not well versed with the wine list. Apart from that the food was acceptable
D. P.
Amazing food - if a little pricey - and friendly, patient staff. Recommended.
M. B.
Amazing place for a Sunday Roast!
G. I. C.
Had the Lamb and Cod - great attention to detail. Waiter was also very kind and attentive without being overbearing.
D. E.
Delicious steaks and great service by all staff members. Not cheap but worth it. Would certainly recommend
b.
The menu reads like a list of good ideas. But the quail and porc were a bit dry. However I really liked the shoulder of goat.
e. c.
The food was lovely could not fault one thing the price was a bit dear but I would return and pay the price again if the food is consistent, but if not I would complain as they ask top price so they should expect criticism if it is not.
S. D.
Great atmosphere - popped in for one drink and ended up staying for the whole evening. Staff really friendly and Vince the Barman was fab.
И. С.
Great food with some of the best desserts.
J. L.
Lovely restaurant with great staff. The food was delicious and i would advise for dessert the banoffee pie and not to share it.
R. B.
Very good French wine. Fine selection of Burgundy. Very good meat. Excellent service.

P. &. C. “. &. P. M.
Good food and setting. Service could be a bit slicker but overall a lovely meal.
c. h.
Like the atmosphere and food very much. Also the BYOB on Monday's for 5 quid is a bonus I'm happy with.

Great restaurant. They've taken this Brighton institution and scaled it up perfectly for the London market without losing any of its charm. Impressive.
